- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Recalibrating the Scales, an editorial by me, Felicity Thow.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Happy new football season to all who celebrate and Godspeed
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: to all my fellow Newcastle United fans.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: For those of you fortunate enough to not have endured the comings and goings
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: and goings and goings of the Newcastle squad this summer,
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: let me give you a brief overview.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: Following a few seasons of success featuring our first domestic trophy since 1955
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: and two qualifications to the Champions League,
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: we had a pretty terrible season ending in May 2026.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: I'm not even going to relive it,
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: just know that sleep, points and a certain amount of pride were lost.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: With the appointment of a new manager,
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: a handful of new players and the designation of a new captain,
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: this has been a summer described by many as one of transition Let me report
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: to you live from deep inside the cocoon on the eve of the Premier League season
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: that it feels more like a summer of metamorphosis.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: We just don't know if what will emerge is a stunning butterfly or
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: a terrifying lopsided moth destined to fly in chaotic circles until it dies.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: My fear as a Newcastle fan of 25 years is not that we will be bad this season.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Even last season pales into insignificance when compared to the time I moved back to
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: the city from university only to find us relegated or the time I got up in
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: the middle of the night in New Zealand to watch games a few years later only
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: to watch us be relegated again.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: My dad will tell you these in turn are small fry compared to the torrid pre-Keegan years.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Time, anxiety disorders and Newcastle United have each taught me a great deal
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: about accepting the things I cannot control.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: And the performance of 11 men and the decisions made about those 11 men by other men
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: in a boardroom fall firmly in that camp.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: No, what worries me is that my fellow Toon fans and I,
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: fuelled by bruised egos,
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: clickbait and their usual culprits,
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: sorry, pundits, judge this season based on past successes.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: What might be more important than points this season is resetting our expectations
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: for a new team,
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: not the old one,
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: and to recalibrate our brains to hold not just what's happening on the pitch
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: in front of us, but the bigger picture too.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Our authors are showing us the bigger picture and reaching for new scales
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: in this month's mskmag.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: First up,
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: our latest staff writer,
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Angie Jackson,
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: cautions against using the embedded reasoning we use for adult patients
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: when it comes to paediatric cases.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: In her article,
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: children are not many adults,
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: rethinking sudden anterior knee pain in the skeletally immature athlete.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Calum Trott of Preve shares his experience creating better AI solutions
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: in healthcare,
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: widening the net from just note writing to ways in which it can improve both
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: the clinician and patient experience in AI solved our notes,
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: but can it improve care?
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Is your slow, heavy loading getting your tendons to nowhere but a plateau?
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Daniel Morgan will stretch your thinking more effectively than collagen in tendons.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: What's load got to do with it?
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Sue Julians has been in the field on investigative journalism duty,
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: putting her biases and cardiovascular system to the test as she checks out
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: a private preventative medicine screening clinic in MSK Mag Goes 2, Nico Health.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: And Jack Chu wants to readdress how we reward good practice
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: and how we manage consequences for bad in MSK's Lost Carrots and Sticks,
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: which features less donkeys than you are picturing right now.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: We've also stepped back in time in this month's core memories feature
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: to see how well Ian Horsley's 2014 podcast episode on the rugby shoulder holds up
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: against contemporary evidence.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: So as we,
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: clinicians and football fans alike,
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: head into a season of the unknown,
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: September's mskmag encourages us to treat what's in front of us rather
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: than measuring it against past iterations of the same line-up.
