Transcript
- 0:07Hi, good afternoon. Welcome to Miller and Condon.
- 0:11On a Monday, the Iowa Sports Radio Network back with you for
- 0:14the next block of six hours of Iowa based programming.
- 0:18Trent Condon, myself, Ken Miller, we'll start things off
- 0:20and take you until 2:00. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:24program here in the next couple of hours.
- 0:26We will start about 25 minutes with Bill Seals who covers Iowa
- 0:29State. He was not in Ireland, but we
- 0:32will pick Bill's brain on what lies ahead, what he saw,
- 0:35etcetera, what he expects, maybe some surprises that saw the
- 0:39field. Bill Seals on Iowa State and
- 0:41their win over at K State coming up here at 12:25.
- 0:44Mitch, Walt is going to give us a couple of bonus days and he'll
- 0:48start with today at 12:45. So there will be an additional I
- 0:52think, 3 days of daily Chiefs training camp reports.
- 0:55Papa John's throughout the state of Iowa sponsor those.
- 0:58So those that'll get to us about 12:45 as the Chiefs have
- 1:02finished up as everybody has pre season games.
- 1:05And now we'll look ahead in their case to a week from Friday
- 1:08night over in Brazil in our number 2, Matt Snyder.
- 1:12Trent and I will talk baseball. The latest on MLB.
- 1:15This is the final Monday for Matt to join us.
- 1:18He'll shift to Tuesday's going forward as Monday's just too
- 1:21busy with with college football. But Matt Snyder on MLB, if
- 1:25you're a fan of Major League Baseball, trust you like that
- 1:27segment. So the hosts certainly do.
- 1:30And then we will get Scott Dockerman, who covers college
- 1:33football for The Athletic. We will get the doc's thoughts
- 1:37on the upcoming Iowa season, what he saw this past weekend,
- 1:39what he expects to see, some of the marquee games that will take
- 1:42place coming up on Saturday night.
- 1:45And by about 6:30 on Saturday night, I hope the Hawks are up
- 1:48about 48 to zip so we can turn and watch real games because
- 1:51this Albany team. So it's 37 1/2.
- 1:54And I defer to you because if there's someone in the audience
- 1:57that would know, it would probably be you.
- 2:00Has there been a bigger underdog at Kennick Stadium than this
- 2:03group of Great Danes that will make their way to Iowa City this
- 2:08weekend? The team that was picked 12th
- 2:10out of 14 in their cup? This has to be as big of a point
- 2:14spread as we've seen. I think there's been bigger ones
- 2:16in the past, Yeah. I mean, I remember that awful
- 2:19Akron team that came to town. I think they were like a 42.
- 2:21Point at least we know what conference they played it's.
- 2:24True. It's true.
- 2:25Yeah, This is that they're not even in the colonial, they're in
- 2:27something else. Cologne.
- 2:28Yet I've never heard of it but. Not the CAA.
- 2:31That's a good basketball league. This is a different league that
- 2:33Albany's in. Oh boy, a whole lot of PU.
- 2:37Then I have a coach. That's true.
- 2:39Well, there's the other thing. They have an interim coach, but
- 2:42they got rid of their coach or their coach left to be an
- 2:46analyst. Well, he saw how bad his team
- 2:48was going to be. An analyst at Penn State, not
- 2:51he's not going to be a defensive when we hear those guys going
- 2:53from you don't. Get to coach.
- 2:55You are an. Analyst, you're not on the
- 2:57field. And he said, you know what?
- 2:59The hell with being a head coach, taking the upgrade
- 3:02employment upgrade. Unbelievable.
- 3:04Anyways, it'll be good to see just so you know, a tune up,
- 3:06etcetera. You won't see squat in advance
- 3:08of Cyhawk, but it'll be good for the home standing fanbase to see
- 3:12Gronowski. But let's start what we saw this
- 3:13weekend. And and I picked K State.
- 3:16So me and Copa, I think, I think Lucas and I were the only ones
- 3:19in the building that did Lucas. If you weren't, if you had Iowa
- 3:22State, I apologize, but I think it was you and I that were on
- 3:25the K state bandwagon. Trent, there were so many
- 3:27positives in this game and I think maybe as big positive I
- 3:30took away was adjustments at halftime and maybe particularly
- 3:34that offensive line because that what a difference, what a
- 3:37difference 1/2 makes. And going into the locker room,
- 3:39Rocco Beck looked like a different quarterback coming out
- 3:42of it. Dominic Orange.
- 3:45Apparently Scott Nach was in here before the show and he and
- 3:47he fed me this little nugget and I wish I had it right.
- 3:51I I think I've got it right that there were 58 defensive snaps
- 3:54for Iowa State. The big citrus played fifty of
- 3:57them. Wow, 50 of them while getting
- 4:00double and triple teamed. This is from PFF.
- 4:03He played 45 of the snaps. Of the 50.
- 4:05Eight yeah, from their grades, but yes, regardless, for a 320
- 4:09LB defensive tackle game one, yeah, that's a lot of snaps.
- 4:13No, you're right. And they needed him for every
- 4:15single one. Of them and Ozigo was really
- 4:17good Dane Brogler did a nice the draft guy over at the athletic
- 4:21was really good at what he does. He made a video of Dom Orange
- 4:24after the game on over the weekend.
- 4:26So it was it was good to see. It really was.
- 4:30I mean, this was a massive, massive victory for Iowa State
- 4:33as far as where this puts him. Because, you know, all of a
- 4:36sudden K State's looking up at a no one hole in a tiebreaker
- 4:39against the team that's probably going to be there with you at
- 4:41the end. That wasn't the case.
- 4:43There's some concerns, I think for Iowa State, but I think
- 4:45we'll start focusing on the positives.
- 4:47And I saw a lot. I mean, these linebackers.
- 4:49Caleb Bacon, for God's sakes. North Iowa Conference.
- 4:52Unbelievable. Glad you pointed that out on X
- 4:55Fellow N Iowa Conference alum doing what he did.
- 4:59He was terrific in the football game.
- 5:01Marcus Neil was unbelievable. Oh my God.
- 5:04You know, that's one of those names.
- 5:05We saw him last year, but not like.
- 5:08This. Right, we saw right, OK, Yep,
- 5:11getting his feet wet good. Yep.
- 5:14And then to see that performance on people been and it's so say
- 5:18we have these conversation. We have Bill Seals.
- 5:20We talked to Bill and April and May and June and July and here
- 5:24in August, and you hear the name and then when you see it.
- 5:27OK, that's real. Eskelsen.
- 5:30Yeah, he's another one. Receptions, him and Overby were
- 5:33out there a ton. Now.
- 5:36We found out throughout last week that Seoul and Townsend
- 5:40were both banged up. Right.
- 5:41And of course, that's the case. But those guys look good.
- 5:45They did and over be 6 foot 5 and Eskelsen.
- 5:48We saw him last year and he and he and he can play crisp route
- 5:52running. Yes, absolutely.
- 5:53The tight ends were terrific in the football game.
- 5:56A tight end that didn't catch a pass.
- 5:57I don't think that I had no idea who he is.
- 6:00He makes a block on Rocco bets touchdown.
- 6:03So they were they were lined up in a heavy with all the tight
- 6:06ends on the left side of the line right then they they split
- 6:09out. They they moved away from the
- 6:10line and before the ball is snapped, here comes Roscamp back
- 6:16against what the the way the play was going because Beck went
- 6:20to his right, they split up to the left.
- 6:22He comes back across the line, he picks off the left defensive
- 6:29end. I don't know if there's a
- 6:29safety. I don't know if it's defensive
- 6:31end, who it was. He is responsible.
- 6:34Well, Beck ran it in. So he did, you know, he did his
- 6:36job. But he makes an unbelievable
- 6:38block. And and another one of those
- 6:40tight ends, Keaton Roskopf, I'll tell you another kid who caught
- 6:43my eye. No.
- 6:44And again, never heard of him before.
- 6:46Van Denter is a red ass. Oh, that kid will not shut up.
- 6:50He talks and talks and talks. He was in it on the sideline.
- 6:53He was in it when he got beat. He, it doesn't matter that we
- 6:56all know that kid, right? We all have played with him.
- 6:59He played any level of sport. You know that kid, he showed up
- 7:02from the first quarter, the fourth quarter, and he wasn't
- 7:06stopping moving and his mouth wasn't stop moving.
- 7:07He plays more because I'm going to watch him every time he's.
- 7:10On my eyes when he was out there were transferred.
- 7:14Van Denter's first name. We need to.
- 7:15I need to know his whole name. Something Van Denter 36 God, I
- 7:19loved watching him play. He's a Wagyu.
- 7:21Was really good in the football game.
- 7:22Batten town passes. Carson, Van Denton.
- 7:24Carson Van Denton, Where's he from?
- 7:26Wisconsin kid. Wisconsin up by mil up north of
- 7:30Milwaukee because we were looking that up too.
- 7:33Like where did this? Kid come from so I hope he
- 7:35doesn't like get carried away and you know you'd hate to draw
- 7:38any laundry, but then then you get in the in the doghouse.
- 7:40Just stay on the field, young man.
- 7:42You're fun to watch. Look at this is a huge building
- 7:46moment. I mean, the safeties were they
- 7:48got beat a couple of times. Corners were fine.
- 7:50Linebackers were flying all over the field like we anticipated
- 7:54they were. The front 7 was terrific.
- 7:55The offensive line looked like they a different offensive line
- 7:58in the second-half. Roccobecht is Oh my God, no to
- 8:01Oh my God, you know, I mean in in a positive way.
- 8:06That's what you're going to get from him.
- 8:07The tight ends are back. I still don't think you have a
- 8:10kicker. I'm still not.
- 8:12I mean, I get it. He made the biggest kick in
- 8:14maybe a decade. I still yes, still can't trust
- 8:17Conradi. He's going to miss a big kick,
- 8:20Mark my words, probably make one, but it's going to miss one
- 8:23in a big spot. Your punter Perkins, there was
- 8:26the first punt of the game and and one of the newcomers, Trey
- 8:30Bell, was the gunner on the play.
- 8:32He just lit that dude up of terrific punt by Perkins and and
- 8:36Bell. But no, no, man, it's so good to
- 8:37be watching football. I'm not sure what the television
- 8:41number will do, but you know what?
- 8:42You're watching college football.
- 8:43You're watching that game. Yes, Right.
- 8:45I think it'll do a tremendous number.
- 8:47Yeah. It doesn't have Florida State
- 8:48last year, not only Florida State, a top 10 Florida State
- 8:51team coming off an undefeated season and getting upset, right?
- 8:54That's a hard bar to clear, but it's going to do a great.
- 8:56Number. No, it's going to.
- 8:57Do a big number. It was a good one.
- 8:59So you mentioned a lot of the guys in mine on my list of ones.
- 9:03You mentioned the tight end position.
- 9:04So we love, we both love Breamer, Yeah.
- 9:07And Gabe Berkel, maybe the way is almost underrated now
- 9:10because. Bramer's back.
- 9:11Because Bramer's back and we have so many expectations for
- 9:14him, but then you throw in Tyler Moore and he's kind of an H back
- 9:18now. That's kind of the role that
- 9:19he's filled into. But just big physical.
- 9:21I know Cooper Alexander had. To try.
- 9:23Yeah, that's bad. But the rest of his game blocked
- 9:26for yes, that guy blocks his ass off.
- 9:28I I think you mentioned Roscop that just mentioned five guys at
- 9:32tight end at Iowa State. Folks, this is, we don't talk
- 9:37about depth like this at Iowa State.
- 9:39There's plenty of years where there's top and talent, but a
- 9:42couple injuries hit at the wrong spot.
- 9:45The depth of this team is on the like anything that I can
- 9:50remember, the wide receiver position, there's a bunch of
- 9:53guys we'll see who steps up, but two guys that we didn't talk
- 9:56about a ton are your top 2 receivers on Saturday.
- 9:59I think that says a lot. The running backroom, you got to
- 10:02boost up. Yeah.
- 10:02So what happened there? Because it was the the usage was
- 10:06Hanson. You got the 1st and 4th almost
- 10:09like right. I don't know if it was defensive
- 10:11front that they that was throwing him for a loop.
- 10:14But Hanson of the two like Sammy, you can see the potential
- 10:17and you see why he's on the field, right?
- 10:19He he, he teases you a little bit.
- 10:21I mean, he's got that burst. And he's got a gear unlike
- 10:23anybody else on there in the running.
- 10:24Back, absolutely, but Hanson's just a.
- 10:27He's tough. He's gonna go through you.
- 10:28I don't want you just want to go around.
- 10:29He wants to go right through you, and that's how he plays.
- 10:32But unfortunately, when you play like that, you know you're gonna
- 10:34pay a price at some point. Campbell's going for it when he
- 10:39did. Up three, fourth down, kick the
- 10:42field goal, you're up six, screaming at my TV.
- 10:45Go. You just.
- 10:47And you know what, I know this is hindsight.
- 10:50It's more easy for me to say no. If they would have got stopped,
- 10:53I would have defended the play. I would have been right there
- 10:55with you. That is the time that you go for
- 10:57it. Because how many times you go up
- 10:59Six. Oh my God, you can't stop them.
- 11:02And they know they have to get the touchdown.
- 11:04I think it changes the mentality on both sides.
- 11:05Entirely. Trained that having to have a
- 11:09touchdown and it's something that we can't measure it's just
- 11:11that field thing it is but it feels different where all right
- 11:16the team gets to the 25 yards all right we got the field goal
- 11:18down and then they start to pull back the reins a little bit and
- 11:21then you play for overtime and said you get it you know it's.
- 11:24Game over, it's game over. Unless you put what in the end
- 11:26zone? Well.
- 11:26I'm glad he was down. I thought he was down.
- 11:28I'm glad they made the right call.
- 11:29And then you know what? I'm sorry for you folks that had
- 11:31the over, but the only way you could have lost that game was to
- 11:34score. Not that it was likely to
- 11:36happen, but we've seen teams that have a 99 percentile of
- 11:39winning the game actually get beat in whatever sport it is.
- 11:42So kneel down, take the win, take your headset off, start
- 11:45celebrating on the sidelines as the coaching staff was able to
- 11:48do What else From the weekend of well, there was only limited
- 11:50amount of games. Do you have any other take away
- 11:53on college football? Because I have one.
- 11:55I really enjoyed the story of the Hawaii Kid.
- 11:57Which, Oh yeah, I didn't see that.
- 11:59So the kid that hits the game winner against the field goal?
- 12:02Yep, Yep, he is from Tokyo. Oh, the kid that learned on
- 12:05YouTube. He comes to America, but doesn't
- 12:10just want to go to any school. He wants to go to a school in
- 12:13the Midwest. So he finds a JUCO up in Ohio
- 12:15because he figured nobody there would speak Japanese.
- 12:17He didn't speak English when he showed up on campus.
- 12:20What year is this? How many years ago is this?
- 12:22I think like a while back, okay, he shows up on campus, doesn't
- 12:26know English, but gets a tryout, talks his way onto a team, gets
- 12:29a tryout with the team. He wasn't overly successful.
- 12:32You look at his numbers and I looked him up in JUCO, but a kid
- 12:35that has taught himself English, he's now an English major.
- 12:37Oh my God, he also has some other ridiculous degree, but a
- 12:41kid that had never kicked a football before until he saw it
- 12:44and said that looks fun, I'm going to try it.
- 12:46And then he kicks a game winner to beat Stanford for the Rainbow
- 12:49Warriors. Yeah, I, I've watched most of
- 12:51the final, I don't know, 8 minutes of that game.
- 12:53I don't know where it was. Probably baseball.
- 12:55I don't know what, what. Regardless, my take away was
- 12:59Jayden Daniels. Jayden Daniels.
- 13:03Yeah. Trent, I, I don't know if Fresno
- 13:05states any good. Jaylen Daniels was really good.
- 13:09He was really good, 18 to 20, rushed for about 50 yards.
- 13:13I don't know if Kansas can be good, but Jaylen Daniels at
- 13:17least for that one day, looked, looked the part.
- 13:20What was your, what, what, what's your take away back to
- 13:24the Iowa State game just for just a second.
- 13:27Avery Johnson, where are you on him?
- 13:28Is he going to ever come near the hype?
- 13:30No, I don't think he is either. I, I, I think that we, maybe our
- 13:35expectations got too high. He's a nice quarterback.
- 13:37Well, when you run off Will Howard, right?
- 13:40And you know, last year. Here's the other thing, though.
- 13:42He set the program record for passing touchdowns last.
- 13:44Year, which is remarkable to me. More than Michael Bishop and
- 13:48Elle Roberson and on and on and on.
- 13:50We can play that game as he beat all those guys.
- 13:53So you have that component of it.
- 13:55He just leaves you wanting more. It feels like the untapped
- 13:59potential. I don't know if you're ever
- 14:01going to get it. Why don't they run a more?
- 14:04We talked about this Friday the games Kansas State lost a year
- 14:07ago outside of the Iowa State game when she was OK running it,
- 14:09but great. Those are the games that they
- 14:11lost. It is how many wait 2121 yards.
- 14:1621 yards and the opportunities on top of it. 8 attempts.
- 14:22And how many of those were sacks?
- 14:24Couple. One maybe, I think only one.
- 14:27So he just leaves you wanting. He's talented.
- 14:31It's not a talent thing. With it, you can see the talent.
- 14:34It's just I don't know if it's the offensive system they're
- 14:37learning too. 01 more thing back to Iowa State, too.
- 14:41It was tackles early on, struggled the offensive line,
- 14:43made the big jump forward. I would love to know how much
- 14:48the, the Burr illness, yeah, how much that really changed, you
- 14:52know, because they didn't play anybody else on the offensive
- 14:54line. It was those five guys and.
- 14:55That was nobody. Else, nobody else really to Pro
- 14:58Football Focus 75 steps for Barrett, Miller, Boniface, Neil
- 15:03and Black. Wow.
- 15:04Because we know that we're, we anticipate there was going to be
- 15:08some type of rotation. Especially when you look as bad
- 15:11as you do in the first half and nobody else came in.
- 15:13Right. And that's what I was shocked by
- 15:14when I saw that. I'm like, there had to be a
- 15:16drive in, you know, middle of the second quarter, but somebody
- 15:19else came in, that wasn't the case.
- 15:22I want to see now what that leads to rotational and we'll
- 15:26see what kind of game they're going to get against South
- 15:27Dakota. But it if, if you know, even if
- 15:29South Dakota's hanging around in the middle of the third quarter,
- 15:33what that rotation's going to look like.
- 15:35Can't give it back now. No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 15:37You're off on the right foot to take care of business this week.
- 15:41I love the fact that Campbell's clearly got their attention.
- 15:44I mean, they, I don't know if they got to even celebrate on
- 15:47the plane because he was planting the South Dakota game
- 15:50in their minds right off the bat.
- 15:51And you almost have to because, as you say, you cannot give it
- 15:54back now. All right, so have we seen the
- 15:57depth chart for Iowa yet? I know it's coming out at some
- 15:59point today. I have not seen it and I've I
- 16:02haven't been on Twitter since the show started.
- 16:05Guessing if it if it does. Pop up.
- 16:07We'll I haven't got the e-mail yet.
- 16:08You haven't got it? Nope.
- 16:09So still waiting. What did you?
- 16:12Think of the the spot on on 4th down when when Johnson carried
- 16:20the ball trying to and I was I was shocked they went for that
- 16:23in that part of the field. What are you doing climbing?
- 16:28I don't know if he got it or he didn't.
- 16:30How could you? You couldn't on the spot before
- 16:33that to set up that Fort down play.
- 16:35That was ridiculous. I don't remember.
- 16:36I think it was it felt like it was about a yard different than
- 16:39what they actually spotted it. Maybe he's like, no, we kind of
- 16:41got away with one here. I guess so.
- 16:43Inconsistent, right? There's got to be a way, there's
- 16:47got to be a way we can get avoid this.
- 16:49But you know what, it's a good thing the play was called that.
- 16:52He was short on the field. Did how did your sync up go with
- 16:55the TV? Early on?
- 16:56I I could brutal. I could only imagine how you
- 16:59were. So I'm watching Taylor
- 17:00McGregor's mouth move and nothing's coming out of it,
- 17:02right? And Obama tweeted at us, too.
- 17:06Is it just my TV? No, it's everybody's TV.
- 17:08But look at it. I, I like the environment.
- 17:11I do, I know a lot of people want the game to be played here,
- 17:15not give up a game. I, I saw Doc Fuller sent this to
- 17:18me that K State apparently got $2.5 million because it was
- 17:23their home game. Iowa State got like, I don't
- 17:26know, travel for everybody, hotels, all their meals were
- 17:30paid for. I think both teams get a
- 17:33percentage of the merchandise sales.
- 17:35But like, it was just great to see college football.
- 17:38It was great to see one of our two teams that were actually,
- 17:40you know, in the spotlight as Iowa State was against K State.
- 17:44And if you're a college football fan, you were tuned in.
- 17:47All right, let's get a quick call in here, then we'll take a
- 17:49break. We've got Bill Seals coming up.
- 17:50More Bill Seals on Iowa State conversation lies ahead.
- 17:54Mitch Holt is going to give us a couple of bonus days this week.
- 17:5712:45-ish for Mitch. A baseball in the second hour
- 18:01with Matt Snyder and Scott Dockerman on college football.
- 18:04Hello, Jeff. How are you?
- 18:05Good. Guys, how are you guys?
- 18:08How was your summer? I haven't heard from you since
- 18:10they cut down the Nets. It was.
- 18:13So I had surgery, so I've been kind of off and on.
- 18:15I had surgery on my calf. So it's just been a long
- 18:17recovery, but I'm getting healthier.
- 18:20Footballs around the corner and let's not wish away football
- 18:23because basketball is right there as well.
- 18:24But it's good to hear from you guys.
- 18:28You know, you guys kind of touched base on the adjustment
- 18:31that was made and maybe I missed this or you guys haven't touched
- 18:33on it yet. But, you know, they brought out
- 18:35Hanson to start the game and then randomly he was not in the
- 18:39game at all for the third quarter, little parts of the
- 18:42second and then he comes in at the fourth quarter and he has
- 18:44juice. The offensive lines kind of
- 18:46doing their thing. I thought that was a huge deal,
- 18:49huge momentum to really start moving the rock 456 yards.
- 18:54Abu didn't really do anything. I was kind of hoping that he
- 18:56can, you know, knock one off. But we know what Hansen can do.
- 19:00If we can get Hansen going and Abu could pop one off, I think
- 19:03that's huge. Secondly, you guys touched on
- 19:07Rocco. My thing with him is it's these
- 19:10mental errors. It could be a pick here, it
- 19:13could be, you know, that toss he threw to a Boo, that was a
- 19:16fumble. I understand the big plays.
- 19:19I get it. Some of the throws he had were
- 19:21amazing. But it's those you talk about.
- 19:23The kicker, some of those mistakes will lose in the game.
- 19:27A pick here or the fumble there. The momentum, you know, the
- 19:31momentum was huge there. I get it, It was the first
- 19:33quarter, but it's those small things that you know they can't
- 19:36do, but they got through that game.
- 19:38A success. You look at their schedule, I've
- 19:41heard you guys talk about it. They get through South Dakota,
- 19:44we get that in Iowa, they don't play the other ranked teams all
- 19:47season and I know we don't want to we don't want to look away
- 19:50into, you know, November and December guys.
- 19:53You look at their schedule and you take care of business and
- 19:56you hear the togetherness you hear all those adjectives that
- 19:59Campbell likes to stay. But when we move forward in this
- 20:01season, they're going to be probably favored outside of that
- 20:04Iowa game. I don't know.
- 20:05I know it's really close outside that Iowa game.
- 20:08They're probably going to be favored in every.
- 20:11Yeah, maybe Arizona State. We'll we'll see.
- 20:13Jeff, thanks for the call. Glad you're on the bend.
- 20:15We'll talk to you throughout the next eight months.
- 20:18Good to hear from. You bye, bye.
- 20:19Guys, see you. Yeah, we hear from German
- 20:21football and college basketball season.
- 20:23When will they be a dog? They're going to be a dog, and
- 20:26they're favored by 2 1/2 right now over Arizona State.
- 20:28No, over Iowa. So they're favored in that game.
- 20:34Looking at projected numbers, yeah, they're like a point and a
- 20:36half favorite, like it's Arizona State.
- 20:40Well, there's onward and upward they're.
- 20:42Going to be favored in every game.
- 20:43That's wild. That's wild as it sits right
- 20:45now. What are they this week?
- 20:4615 1/2 something like that. Miller and Condon underway on a
- 20:50Monday. Glad you're with us.
- 20:51Glad college football is with us.
- 20:53It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 21:08By coming up on 1230 Miller and Condon on a Monday, Bill seals
- 21:11momentarily cyclonereport.com part of on three media Thunder.
- 21:16Joe has been on hold throughout the break.
- 21:19Give him some time here. Joe, thanks for being patient.
- 21:21How are you? Great brother.
- 21:24Hey, real quick, Avery Johnson. Hell of a Spurs point guard.
- 21:27But in all seriousness. He wants to fight.
- 21:31To me to me he's like Adrian Martinez 2 point O, both
- 21:35talented as a Catholic. Wedding is long, but at the end
- 21:38of the day you're left with a prom date that gave you the
- 21:40wrong address. What was the Catholic wedding
- 21:43again? The Catholic wedding is long.
- 21:45They're both. That's really good.
- 21:48And Avery Johnson are both as talented as a Catholic wedding
- 21:51is. Long, I've never heard that
- 21:52before. Joe, appreciate the call.
- 21:54Thanks for thanks for holding on.
- 21:55We'll talk to you throughout the year.
- 21:58There he goes. Have you heard that one?
- 21:59I had That's a good one. Now I've sat through many
- 22:02Catholic weddings and plenty of mass growing up and.
- 22:06We're not ripping the Catholic religion.
- 22:09No. Good blog, I know.
- 22:11Bill Seals joins the program. Hello, Bill Seals, how are you?
- 22:15cyclonereport.com press conference is tomorrow.
- 22:19What do you know? Bill Seals, how are you?
- 22:22I'm doing well just navigating through it's a more traditional
- 22:27game week now. I'm kind of enjoying settling
- 22:30into that and I'm sure Iowa State that coaches and players
- 22:35are as well after getting in from Dublin early yesterday
- 22:39afternoon. Classes start today and we're
- 22:41more into a traditional game week now with South Dakota on
- 22:45the schedule for Saturday. Yeah, no doubt about.
- 22:47So they got to be students today after recovering from the from
- 22:51the jet lag, etcetera, and playing a football game and then
- 22:54back to it. So how are they handling this
- 22:56bill? Obviously, as you said, they got
- 22:57home. I think I think I saw on on X
- 23:00the planes landed. KCCI had a crew there maybe
- 23:03around one O clock say. So they get back to aims on how
- 23:06long it took to load the buses, say 3.
- 23:08What, what, what was the the schedule from their day off or,
- 23:12or do you know how they handled yesterday and will do so today?
- 23:17Well, I think that they actually usually practice or they do
- 23:21something on Sunday and then I believe Monday is a day off.
- 23:26I don't know, I might, I might have those off.
- 23:28It's been a year since since we were told a lot of these things.
- 23:32But I I believe Sunday they actually get back at it and, and
- 23:36do a little something. Maybe it's recovery.
- 23:39I'm sure it'll be recovery to an extent once they got back to the
- 23:42facilities there. But yeah, I think we'll we'll
- 23:46see how really navigate through this.
- 23:48A lot of it's been well publicized that none of these
- 23:51college teams that have played in this Aer Lingus Classic have
- 23:55gone on to have very good season.
- 23:56So Kansas State, Iowa State, both up against that.
- 24:00But I tell you what, the Cyclones, you know, got a nice
- 24:03win over a contender in in K State.
- 24:06So I guess I like their chances to kind of buck that trend a
- 24:10little better than Kansas State maybe right now.
- 24:13Yeah, definitely in good shape in that one.
- 24:15And no start, that's going to go a long, long ways.
- 24:17Keep in there. And when we get to tiebreakers,
- 24:18and yes, I say when tiebreakers are going to be a part of it at
- 24:21some point, that one's going to be important.
- 24:24So we talked at the top about a couple of guys, Dom Ornish at at
- 24:27the forefront of what he did, the amount of snaps that he
- 24:30played and just absolutely plugging things up and making
- 24:32plays all over the place. I want to go to the rest of the
- 24:35defensive line though. We got to see a little bit of
- 24:37Hawk. He came in for Orange in the
- 24:38middle there. Avantre Malone, the kid from
- 24:40Tulsa that came in in the transfer portal.
- 24:43McDonough, we've heard a lot about him.
- 24:45He made a bad mistake on that zone read that Johnson read and
- 24:48he's just over pursued that one. But overall, what else did you
- 24:51see upfront outside of the dominant play from Dominic
- 24:54Orange? Well, yeah, they they had it.
- 24:58One, one thing actually that kind of stood out to me was you
- 25:01looked at the snap counts and they were very clear in what the
- 25:06first and second teams are because Orange as the AGU
- 25:10McDonough each play 45 snaps. Hawk, Gilbert, Malone each
- 25:15played 14. So they were rotating guys in
- 25:19and out. But I think what for, for
- 25:23Orange, I believe it was the goal was like 60 percent of
- 25:29plays that they wanted to get him on the field for.
- 25:32He certainly surpassed that. And the other played 59 snaps
- 25:37total. He plays 45 of them.
- 25:39That's huge in a game like this that the tackling grade on him,
- 25:44pass rush grade on him. He doesn't do a lot of pass
- 25:48rushing, but I think those graded out well above average.
- 25:52So yeah, he was the the stand out on the defensive side, at
- 25:56least on that the defensive front.
- 25:58So it was nice to see a little bit more of Zamir Hawk.
- 26:03We got saw him a little bit last season, but he came in and I
- 26:07think graded out a lot better than he had and in any of his
- 26:11work last year out there. So Eziagu though, gosh, he was
- 26:17revelation. Yeah, he didn't grade out very
- 26:20well and in tackling, but he was a presence upfront.
- 26:25I think what had a quarterback hurry had a pass or two, maybe 2
- 26:30passes broken up. So yeah, him, him getting
- 26:35getting up to like 285 lbs now he's a guy that looks like he
- 26:40can be one that holds the anchor on on that strong side end
- 26:44position. The linebackers, we we thought
- 26:47that there was going to be a really good group and and they
- 26:49were on on Saturday and Bacon's all over the field.
- 26:52Willits played his you know what off Ebel was?
- 26:55He was noticeable as well. How about Lovett getting out
- 26:58there? It was good to see.
- 27:00Here's the one question, though, and and he's hurt again.
- 27:02Damn it. What's the I mean, I, I'm
- 27:05guessing on Wednesday, we'll see day-to-day is my is my, you
- 27:09know, thought process at this point because Brazina did not
- 27:12see the field again, did he? Do you know once he got.
- 27:15Hurt. No, I think I and yeah, and I
- 27:17think he's probably going to be on that questionable line for
- 27:20this week. Once we, well, we'll, we'll,
- 27:24we'll get a little bit out of mad, I'm sure on that tomorrow.
- 27:27But then we'll see kind of how things shake up on Wednesday on
- 27:32that first availability report. But yeah, I would anticipate
- 27:35Brazina's going to be questionable for that.
- 27:38He did play 19 snaps, graded out as one of the better tacklers in
- 27:44in the middle of that defense as far as the linebackers go.
- 27:47But yeah, we'll we'll have to see how.
- 27:50I mean, he he looked great in the preseason when we when we
- 27:54got him or we physically look good.
- 27:57We didn't watch any practices, but gosh, he is a specimen now
- 28:01compared to what he was as a true freshman.
- 28:03So yeah, they'll look to try and get him back in there.
- 28:07But yeah, inside though, you, you mentioned Kenny, Caleb
- 28:10Bacon. Great to see him back in there.
- 28:13He plays 46 of those 59 defensive snaps.
- 28:16Certainly Aldazone, Love, love it played 13 snaps, but yeah, it
- 28:22appears it's going to Cooper Evil played 40.
- 28:25So I think between Bacon and Evil, those are your top 2
- 28:28inside backers. Lovett was hurt a lot last
- 28:32season, so they got him back out there.
- 28:34I think he came back though, pretty strong toward the end of
- 28:37the season. But they're looking for big
- 28:39things for him. He's probably the past rushing
- 28:44inside linebacker of that group. So a lot to be expected from
- 28:48him. And we'll we'll see who steps in
- 28:50for Brizina if he is indeed out for this game on Saturday.
- 28:54Is it likely you can go through the season playing 7 linebackers
- 28:57every game or is this going to be, hey, we just got to see
- 29:00these guys in action and we're going to start to pare that
- 29:03thing down as we get deeper into the season?
- 29:06Well, I, that's a good, that's a good question.
- 29:09I, I think they're going to play at least 6, maybe maybe 7 that
- 29:14that's going to be a pretty solid rotation of guys.
- 29:16And you've got what they, I think they said nine.
- 29:19Well, there are 9 total that had played on Saturdays, play
- 29:23defense, not just special teams. So they're going to utilize that
- 29:26depth and then I think it's going to serve them well once
- 29:29they get into the heart of that conference schedule.
- 29:32Help me out with the running back rotation.
- 29:34It was seemingly and it wasn't. This wasn't hard fast. 1st and
- 29:384th Hanson, 2nd and 3rd Sama. It seemed like that's how it
- 29:42played out. I don't think that's going to be
- 29:44the case. Was that defensive fronts?
- 29:46Were they trying to do something different when?
- 29:48Because the the offensive line seemingly struggled in the first
- 29:51half, They were great in the second-half.
- 29:53I don't know if K State did something they weren't
- 29:55expecting. Was that adjustment on their
- 29:56part? What in particular with the
- 29:59running backs Hanson and Sama? How do you think those carries
- 30:01will work themselves? Out.
- 30:03Well, I, I think Kansas State surprised them a little, a
- 30:06little bit because this was the defense that had moved to a
- 30:08three man front in in recent years.
- 30:11They played a little more four man.
- 30:15That took a little bit of adjustment that I think what
- 30:19you're going to see though, as far as these running backs go,
- 30:22they're going to ride the, the, the hot hand.
- 30:24I mean, Sama got a lot of those. You mentioned those carries in
- 30:28the second and third. I guess they, they liked how
- 30:32that was going. He didn't put up a big
- 30:34statistical day like average yardage wise, but I think they
- 30:38they got what they needed out of him.
- 30:40And then you're going to see Carson Hanson as the closer down
- 30:45the stretch in a in a game like this, a physical game like this,
- 30:48you know, you're going to get in this Farmageddon rivalry.
- 30:51And Hanson was money though down the stretch, what, 10 carries
- 30:55for 60 yards just in the fourth quarter alone.
- 30:59And then that was huge to get that and and to balance kind of
- 31:03counteract their counter, what the teams are going to see from
- 31:07Rocco backed. And you got a running back like
- 31:09Hanson that grinds out six yards of carry in the final 15
- 31:13minutes. Offensive line, we find out
- 31:15Burr's not going to be there, didn't make the trip because of
- 31:17his illness, and then they just play the five offensive lineman,
- 31:21no rotation at all. Just take a guess because I know
- 31:24it's that at this point in time. Burr say he's healthy this week,
- 31:27he's ready to go. How much of rotation do you
- 31:30anticipate this week with your top 6 then?
- 31:33Well, you maybe you'll see a little rotation on the inside.
- 31:38Supposedly what what Campbell said is that he was sick.
- 31:43We'll we'll see if that was the case or if it was some kind of
- 31:46injury involved there, but that was what we heard from Campbell.
- 31:53So I, I think when Bohr is ready to go, he's going to, he's going
- 31:57to start. He's one of the best 5, easily
- 32:00one of the best 5 offensive lineman and that Jim Boniface,
- 32:04gosh, there well, 66.4 total grade.
- 32:08He was the third of the five offensive lineman that's that
- 32:12started on Saturday. He's earned the right to stay in
- 32:14there as the center. He started all what 13 games in
- 32:202023 there. He's got the experience.
- 32:22He graded out well. He was one of the better ones in
- 32:27in run blocking. So he's earned the right again
- 32:30that to start at center and in Week 2 and a boar's ready to go.
- 32:35Maybe they took take a look at Brendan Black.
- 32:37He was the lowest of those five and but I I still think Black
- 32:41though, is that is someone and maybe they try to rotate through
- 32:45and you never know what bore as well.
- 32:47A coming back off of sickness or illness or injury, whatever it
- 32:52is. Maybe they don't want to throw
- 32:54him out there for every snap and and black becomes kind of a
- 32:57rotational guy there on the inside of that online.
- 33:02Fascinating to see how it plays out.
- 33:04That was a major, major win picking off K State.
- 33:07So how do you see the pecking order now, Bill, now the K
- 33:11State's gone down? How did you, what were your
- 33:13thoughts prior to and what's the top of this conference look like
- 33:17in your mind? Well, I still think that you
- 33:20could put you could probably put 7, maybe 8 teams, put them up on
- 33:27a dart board and throw a dart at at 1:00 and then and that could
- 33:31be your champion I guess so to speak.
- 33:33I think it's still this is a league or any, anyone can can
- 33:37win it. Kansas State didn't like
- 33:40certainly going over there and then losing a home game on
- 33:44foreign soil and, and going oh, and one.
- 33:47But we've seen this K State team win 9 games each of the last
- 33:51three years. So they're not out of the
- 33:53running by any means. But I think just with the way
- 33:56this Iowa State schedule sets up and, and who they play at the,
- 34:01the, the, the tough teams that they do play a lot of them they
- 34:04get at home. This was a big one to get,
- 34:07especially since it was a quote UN quote Rd. game and the beat K
- 34:11state. I think they've set themselves
- 34:13up well to be one of those teams in contention.
- 34:17But again, I think at this point you still look at this as seven,
- 34:21maybe 8 teams that that all could compete.
- 34:24Can be fascinating to watch play out and grateful that we get to
- 34:27Bill Seals. Thank you.
- 34:29You got a busy week. I'm guessing it's
- 34:30cycleandreport.com part of on three media press conferences
- 34:33and player avails. You'll get to those tomorrow.
- 34:36Bill. Thank you very much.
- 34:37Appreciate you coming on. I guess he said thank you didn't
- 34:42have to, but I think that's what he said.
- 34:44We'll take your time out. We'll come back.
- 34:46Mitch Holt is going to join us Miller in Condon.
- 34:48We're on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 34:52I'm Mory Condon. Welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio
- 34:55Network. We are with you until 2O clock.
- 34:58Matt Snyder on Major League Baseball, Scott Docman from the
- 35:00Athletic on college football. Still to come, Mitch Holtis back
- 35:05with us for a couple of extra bonus days.
- 35:07Boy, the Donaldsons, they made business pumping out those
- 35:09specials. We will get to that.
- 35:11Good to talk to you. Mitch Holtis, how are you?
- 35:15Great. Yeah, the roving R&D Papa John's
- 35:18truck has gone from Reynolds to Mitchellville.
- 35:21They unveiled this. We're unveiling it today in
- 35:24Altoona. So I'm doing OK These two days,
- 35:27though, Ken and Trent are two of the most difficult, just because
- 35:31you're cutting 38 guys and, you know, they look for another
- 35:35place to land or you try to get him on the practice squad
- 35:38willing. But we're going to be down to 53
- 35:40by 3:00 tomorrow afternoon and have our practice squad put
- 35:44together by 3:00 on Wednesday afternoon.
- 35:47So this is always a flurry of activity.
- 35:49It's like the start of the New York Stock Exchange.
- 35:51But it's days that guys get cut. And that is, it's just no fun.
- 35:55There's no way to desensitize from it.
- 35:58So when you when you go through the season, you watch the three
- 36:00pre season games from from your eye, what is there a concern
- 36:05amongst the position group Mitch that maybe this area needs
- 36:08shoring up? I mean, there can't be many of
- 36:10them, but is there, is there something in your mind that you
- 36:13know, Veitch and company might be looking to add a body or two
- 36:16with that position? I think probably depth on the
- 36:21defensive line, but they've already addressed it.
- 36:23We got Derek Noddy back, which is a bonus, and that's that
- 36:29fifth guy on the inside that I actually talked about with you
- 36:32guys on Friday. I would say DB, particularly
- 36:36corner, and I've even mentioned that in our preview before the
- 36:40game on Friday night, was the fact that you've got 5 safeties
- 36:45that you feel pretty good about, and that is moving Christian
- 36:48Roland Wallace to safety. He's your 5th safety, but your
- 36:52five corners is still uncertain. Now corner is a really hard
- 36:57place to go to go get, you know, check the waiver wire and pick
- 37:02up a good corner that's going to be good for you.
- 37:05So Christian Fulton played a lot the other night, didn't have a
- 37:07great night, didn't have a terrible night, But what do you
- 37:11have other than Mcguffey that you can count on?
- 37:13And you're going to be nickel dime.
- 37:15And so I would say that right now would be the biggest one or
- 37:19running back. Is there a fourth running back?
- 37:22Because I mentioned at the the other night the fact that we
- 37:25picked up some IJP Ryan and Kareem Hunt on August the 26th a
- 37:31year ago. So you scan the wire, they're
- 37:34looking for like the right fit at running back.
- 37:37Other than that, this this roster is ready to go.
- 37:40Have kind of a a different type of question for you.
- 37:42So one of my best friends took his son down to the game Friday
- 37:46night and he's a Broncos fan. His son, though, his 10 year old
- 37:51son is a Chiefs fan. And I'm going to be guess
- 37:53there's a lot of those arguments, a lot of households
- 37:55across the country. My daughter has an affinity for
- 37:58the Chiefs. There has to be a lot of that.
- 38:00What it's like now to be this team that is beloved, what the
- 38:04Patriots were and so many people jumping on the bandwagon, what
- 38:07the 70s Steelers were, America's team with the Cowboys.
- 38:10What's it like now to be in this position where it's not just the
- 38:13Kansas City metro or even kind of the Midwest here?
- 38:16This is a national organization. You ask a way better question,
- 38:20Trent, than you know, there's a lot of research on this.
- 38:23We've done a lot of research. When do you pick your team for
- 38:26life? You know the age.
- 38:28How? What is it?
- 38:309 or 10 years old life. So here's what happens.
- 38:34How many people in Iowa when we play the Steelers at home there
- 38:37will be agave Steeler fans. People go man, Pittsburgh really
- 38:40travels. No, it's all the Steeler
- 38:43families from Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska that grew up with
- 38:47the Steeler. Grandpa loved him in the 70s and
- 38:50the 10 year old loved the Steelers because Dad loved him
- 38:52or Grandpa loved him and now that one's a grandpa.
- 38:56And then the kids become Steeler fans and oh, the Steelers in
- 38:59Kansas City. This is my one shot to see them.
- 39:02I will pay premium for the tickets through a ticket service
- 39:06so that I can go to the game and watch the Steelers.
- 39:09It's a big deal. The fact that the Chiefs have
- 39:11been a big deal now for over a decade.
- 39:15You've got a lot of 8-9 and 10 year olds, gals and guys who
- 39:19have those in their team for life.
- 39:21I've seen it in baseball, seen it in football and it's for
- 39:24scientific. I mean, we again, we've done
- 39:26exhaustive research on this. So this is something even if the
- 39:30Chiefs come out of this era, you're still going to have
- 39:33people who will take this team and the Chiefs and take them all
- 39:36the way through their lives. It's just crazy the way that
- 39:39works. Saint Louis Cardinal baseball
- 39:41fans, it's the same Cubs baseball fans.
- 39:44How many, how many? And I know the I Cubs are there,
- 39:47but there's a lot of folks in Des Moines that just love the
- 39:49Cubs because grandma or grandpa loved the Cubs.
- 39:52I think it's about that age where you start to identify your
- 39:54favorite pizza Mitch as well. I know that happened to me.
- 39:58Well, here it is. We got the special, we're in
- 40:01corking it all week. OK, what is it?
- 40:04You can get two large one topping pizzas.
- 40:06Two large, one topping pieces, 999 each.
- 40:09We talk about food costs going up.
- 40:11The Donaldsons are going the other way.
- 40:13I mean, we got football coming up, high school football.
- 40:16Iowa State's gets a big win. Hawkeyes are coming here.
- 40:19So it's going to be a two large, one topping pizzas only, 999
- 40:25each. Papa John's, check it out.
- 40:27We will and we'll talk to you tomorrow and Wednesday.
- 40:29Thank you. Mitch Holtis, appreciate this
- 40:31little bonus. We really do.
- 40:32Thank you. You got it from Altoona to the
- 40:35next stop. Hopefully Ankeny we'll find out.
- 40:39Mitch Holtis, the voice of the Kansas City Chiefs. 2 large
- 40:43pizzas. What was the price 99099?
- 40:46That is a good deal. It is all right.
- 40:48We're going to put the football on the back burner for the time
- 40:51being. Talk a little MLB with our guy
- 40:54Matt Snide. They're still playing baseball,
- 40:55huh? They are.
- 40:56OK. They are.
- 40:57I thought after the Twins, you know, sold it off, they're just
- 41:00going to cancel the season. No, Cubs are.
- 41:01Within 5 I know. They are.
- 41:03Here they come, our 2 is next. Miller and Condon talking sports
- 41:06with you on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
