Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Government today here back home will announce plans what to
- 0:03Speaker 1: do about the guns. Nicole McKey is set to lay
- 0:05Speaker 1: out her rewriting of the Arms Act. But what changes
- 0:09Speaker 1: do the gun lobbyists hope come through for them. Hugh
- 0:11Speaker 1: devere Mack is with US Counsel of Licensed Firearms Owner Spokespersonshugh.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Good morning, Good morning, Ryan.
- 0:17Speaker 1: You've just been at a conference and Nicole McKee was
- 0:19Speaker 1: speaking there. Did she give you any clues about what
- 0:22Speaker 1: they might be doing.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Yeah, they gave us a few, a few sort of
- 0:27Speaker 2: heads up as to what license firems owners should expect
- 0:30Speaker 2: from the law. But I wouldn't want to steal away
- 0:33Speaker 2: the Minister's sunder. I think later on today she may
- 0:35Speaker 2: be speaking, but I can tell you what we are
- 0:38Speaker 2: hoping to hear from. We don't have any details actually
- 0:41Speaker 2: as to what's in it yet, but I can tell
- 0:42Speaker 2: you what license firearms does and it's are hoping for.
- 0:44Speaker 2: If that helps.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Yeah, let's start with the non criminal activities thing. What's
- 0:49Speaker 1: that about.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Yeah, so there's a couple of things that we'd like
- 0:53Speaker 2: to see involved in there. License firearms owners have been
- 0:56Speaker 2: losing firearm's license of her non criminal activities So the
- 1:01Speaker 2: reason that comes about is because the current Act lacks
- 1:03Speaker 2: really clear definitions, including what constitutes a fat and proper person,
- 1:08Speaker 2: which is well what we're judged to be. That comes
- 1:11Speaker 2: from Section twenty four a two C of the Arms Act,
- 1:14Speaker 2: which says when a finding or giving a firearms license,
- 1:17Speaker 2: they have to consider it quote any other relevant matters
- 1:20Speaker 2: the member of police considers appropriate. Now that's a vague
- 1:24Speaker 2: catchull because it's been used for people who have had
- 1:27Speaker 2: maybe a negative experience with an X. We've had people
- 1:31Speaker 2: have them because of medical reasons that are beyond their control.
- 1:34Speaker 2: An individual had his license canceled because he had cancer
- 1:36Speaker 2: and then had a seizure. It has nothing to do
- 1:39Speaker 2: with his safety around firearms, but as a result of that,
- 1:42Speaker 2: he had his license taken off them and his access
- 1:45Speaker 2: to hunting and putting food on the table restricted. So
- 1:48Speaker 2: a clear definition of what fit and proper means with
- 1:51Speaker 2: a clear checklist, so we all know objectively what rules
- 1:55Speaker 2: we have to live by, I think is a really
- 1:57Speaker 2: good and fundamental principle for the new Arms Acts. So
- 1:59Speaker 2: that would be one of them.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Right, Okay, And so you're saying anything out that, what
- 2:03Speaker 1: about mental illness? I mean, if you've been if you've
- 2:06Speaker 1: had mental illness, should you be owning a gun?
- 2:09Speaker 2: Yeah? So mental illness is a really, really vague and
- 2:12Speaker 2: wide term. Right. We've had people who lose their firem's
- 2:15Speaker 2: license for showing anxiety. Now, one of the best things
- 2:17Speaker 2: you can do for curing or helping with anxiety is
- 2:20Speaker 2: getting out into the wide world and counting with your
- 2:23Speaker 2: friends safely. Of course.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Yeah, but you also all nutbars having guns, do you?
- 2:29Speaker 2: I mean, how do you? Absolutely so?
- 2:30Speaker 1: How do you stop that?
- 2:32Speaker 2: So the way you stop that is some great work
- 2:34Speaker 2: is being done with both the firem Safety Authority and
- 2:37Speaker 2: a group called Mental Hunts, which is helping men and
- 2:40Speaker 2: firearms owners get better access to mental health and finding
- 2:44Speaker 2: the way that they can have their license temporarily taken
- 2:47Speaker 2: off them while they get the help they need, and
- 2:49Speaker 2: once they're signed off by a psychologist, they can get
- 2:51Speaker 2: their license back again. That's currently how the system should work, right. Unfortunately,
- 2:57Speaker 2: sometimes it gets a little bit vague and a little
- 2:59Speaker 2: bit over the top, and we understand that need to
- 3:02Speaker 2: err on the side of caution, but the police are
- 3:04Speaker 2: not psychologists. Once a psychologist surreya has signed off and
- 3:08Speaker 2: said you are okay and no longer a danger to
- 3:10Speaker 2: yourself or others, then that's when the police should say, look,
- 3:13Speaker 2: the doctors and the professionals have said you can have it.
- 3:16Speaker 2: It's not our job to stand in your way, but unfortunately,
- 3:18Speaker 2: at this point they are still doing that.
- 3:20Speaker 1: All right, you appreciate your chim This morning, Hu Deverau
