- Cooper Flagg just became the second-youngest Rookie of the Year in NBA history — only LeBron James was younger. And honestly? The gap between Flagg and everyone else this season wasn't even close. Welcome to The Sports Hangover Daily, I'm Michael Benatar. Let's start with the NBA, because last night was a loaded slate. Cooper Flagg officially took home Rookie of the Year, and I know some of you are gonna say "well duh, everyone knew that." And yeah, you're right. But the details still matter. Flagg grabbed fifty-six of the one hundred first-place votes, beating out his former Duke teammate Bub Knueppel by twelve first-place votes. He's the first rookie to win it since Michael Jordan in eighty-four eighty-five who was also the number one overall pick for a team that won a championship that same year. Think about that. The kid hasn't even turned twenty yet and he's already in a sentence with Jordan and LeBron. Now look — Knueppel had a hell of a year in Charlotte. Forty-four first-place votes ain't nothing. But Flagg was just on a different level. His impact on both ends, the way Boston used him down the stretch, the maturity — it all screamed generational. And the Celtics are sitting pretty at three to one over the Sixers with a chance to close it out tonight. Flagg's not just the best rookie. He might be the best young player we've seen enter the league since Luka. Alright, around the league. Let's run through last night's action. The Thunder completed the sweep over the Suns, one thirty-one to one twenty-two. SGA went for thirty-one and eight assists. That's three straight years OKC has swept their first-round opponent. Twelve and oh in the first round over three seasons. That's dominance. The Suns threw everything at them — Jalen Green had twenty-three, Booker did his thing — didn't matter. OKC is just built different right now. They're resting up while everyone else grinds. In Detroit, the Magic took Game Four, ninety-four to eighty-eight. Orlando leads three to one. The Pistons shot thirty-two percent from the field. Thirty-two percent. Cade Cunningham had twenty-five and nine boards, but he didn't get nearly enough help. Detroit got outrebounded sixty-nine to sixty-three, and when you can't shoot AND can't rebound, you're going home. That might be the series right there. Now the interesting one — Denver stayed alive. Nuggets beat the Wolves one twenty-five to one thirteen in Game Five. Jokic went full Jokic — twenty-seven points, sixteen assists, twelve rebounds. The man had SIXTEEN assists. Denver shot nearly fifty-seven percent as a team with thirty-five assists total. That's beautiful basketball. Minnesota was without Anthony Edwards and Donte DiVincenzo, which is massive. Julius Randle led the Wolves with twenty-seven, but it wasn't enough. Minnesota still leads three to two, but if Edwards isn't back for Game Six? This series just got a lot more interesting. Quick NHL check — the Penguins are alive. Pittsburgh beat Philly three to two in Game Five. Elmer Soderblom and Jacob Dewar scored the goals, and neither team scored in the third. Crosby's starting to find his groove, and Philly's gotta be a little nervous now, up three to two but heading back to Pittsburgh for Game Six. And in the other game, the Golden Knights beat Utah five to four in overtime. Shea Theodore with the OT winner. That series is knotted at two apiece. Alright, Hangover Take time. I wanna talk about the Thunder for a second. Specifically, what they're doing to the rest of the Western Conference's psyche. Twelve and oh in the first round over three years. They just swept Phoenix — a team with Devin Booker and Kevin Durant on the roster — and it felt routine. Not dramatic. Not tense. Routine. That's terrifying. Here's what I keep coming back to — the Wolves might be up three to two on Denver, the Lakers might be up three to one on Houston, but whoever comes out of those series is walking into a buzzsaw that's been resting for a week. OKC doesn't just beat you. They make you feel like you never had a chance. And SGA is only twenty-six. Chet's only twenty-two. This isn't a team that's peaking — this is a team that's still getting better. I think the Thunder win the West this year, and I think it's in five games or fewer in every remaining round. Come at me. That's your hangover. Go hydrate. I'll see you tomorrow.
