Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Grabbed the Popcorn. The flick with bedow Shade. Good Morning Band,
- 0:09Speaker 1: Good Morning. The great late Anthony Bourdain, who was taken
- 0:14Speaker 1: from us in twenty eighteen. He took his own life
- 0:17Speaker 1: after a long career as a as a chef, then
- 0:19Speaker 1: a celebrity chef, then an author, and then of course
- 0:22Speaker 1: a TV host his sort of food based travel shows.
- 0:25Speaker 1: He was such a unique legend because he had this
- 0:29Speaker 1: way of talking about food and meeting people and talking
- 0:32Speaker 1: about life. The story to storytelling was just absolutely amazing,
- 0:37Speaker 1: and he had this ability to really kind of get
- 0:39Speaker 1: to the heart of the human condition in a way
- 0:41Speaker 1: that I think all and he was flawed. He was flawed,
- 0:44Speaker 1: and he never shied away from that that he was.
- 0:46Speaker 1: He was kind of this interesting balance of hubris, which
- 0:49Speaker 1: I think a lot of great chefs have, but also
- 0:51Speaker 1: that self deprecation and insecurity and recognizing that he had faults. Oh,
- 0:56Speaker 1: he wasn't perfect, and in many ways he was perfect
- 0:59Speaker 1: for that. And and we all saw a bit of
- 1:02Speaker 1: ourselves in him, and we live vicariously through all of
- 1:05Speaker 1: his travels minus the cooking skill. Minus the cooking I
- 1:09Speaker 1: wish I saw a bit of myself in the kitchen,
- 1:13Speaker 1: but he also found a way to bring food to
- 1:15Speaker 1: the you know, down to the common level. It wasn't
- 1:17Speaker 1: just about Michelin starred food. It was also about you know,
- 1:20Speaker 1: a grilled cheese sandwich guy. And he loved his passion
- 1:23Speaker 1: for what he was trying in a different place and
- 1:27Speaker 1: trying different things, and that had to be unique, unique
- 1:30Speaker 1: and had to be authentic, and it had to be worthwhile,
- 1:33Speaker 1: worth your time. Right. So so when he did, you know,
- 1:35Speaker 1: when he did take his own life, I think a
- 1:37Speaker 1: lot of his fans were just like gutted. They were
- 1:38Speaker 1: so it was it was hard to take because he
- 1:41Speaker 1: loved life so much and so exactly exactly. So that's
- 1:45Speaker 1: why I think there's a lot of interest around this biopic,
- 1:48Speaker 1: which stars Dominic Sssa, who people who saw The Holdovers
- 1:52Speaker 1: will remember he was the main kid in that, in
- 1:54Speaker 1: that sort of coming up age movie. Great movie, and
- 1:57Speaker 1: he was amazing in that in a breakthrough role. So
- 1:59Speaker 1: now he's taking a step up and playing Anthony Bourdain,
- 2:03Speaker 1: and the film focuses on just one summer of Bourdain's life.
- 2:06Speaker 1: When he was a college kid, he dreamed of being
- 2:09Speaker 1: an author, famous author. He didn't get this fellowship, and
- 2:13Speaker 1: so he kind of ran away from home, chased this girl.
- 2:15Speaker 1: It's a Cape cod kind of like a holiday destination
- 2:18Speaker 1: in America. And then when his kind of romantic hopes
- 2:22Speaker 1: were dashed because she had this other boyfriend at the time,
- 2:25Speaker 1: He's gone, oh, how can I hang around in this
- 2:28Speaker 1: holiday town. I'm just going to get a job as
- 2:30Speaker 1: a dish pig at a fish and chips joint. And
- 2:32Speaker 1: so it was in this one summer that he really
- 2:35Speaker 1: kind of confirmed this love of food and this desire
- 2:38Speaker 1: to be a chef, not because you know, he really
- 2:40Speaker 1: enjoyed the cooking so much, but because these other chefs
- 2:43Speaker 1: around him just seemed so punk rock. He was like,
- 2:46Speaker 1: oh my god, like one of the other young chefs,
- 2:49Speaker 1: you know, sort of took it upon himself to try
- 2:51Speaker 1: and you know, sort of woo every young lady that
- 2:53Speaker 1: came into the restaurant. Even hooked up with a bride
- 2:56Speaker 1: at her wedding dinner at the restaurant, and this happened.
- 2:59Speaker 1: This happened in real life to Anthony Bourdaine, and in
- 3:02Speaker 1: his book Kitchen Confidential, he says, that was the moment
- 3:05Speaker 1: where I thought I need to become a chef. And
- 3:09Speaker 1: the head chef of this restaurant was played by Antonio Banderis,
- 3:12Speaker 1: who is kind of like the classic kind of tough
- 3:15Speaker 1: but fair chef who he doesn't tolerate any incompetence in
- 3:21Speaker 1: the kitchen, but you can tell he has a deep
- 3:22Speaker 1: affection for young Tony as he goes by in this film. Tony,
- 3:27Speaker 1: He's not a real character in real life, so it's
- 3:30Speaker 1: kind of like a mix of a bunch of chefs
- 3:32Speaker 1: that inspired a young Anthony Bourdain. And so the big
- 3:36Speaker 1: question for me watching this movie is I tried to
- 3:39Speaker 1: think would Anthony Bordain himself have liked it? And I
- 3:43Speaker 1: think probably ultimately not, But that's only because, like I
- 3:47Speaker 1: think Anthony probably wouldn't have felt that he was worthy
- 3:50Speaker 1: of a biopic in the first place. He'd be like,
- 3:53Speaker 1: like especially concentrating on that I'm just a dude who
- 3:56Speaker 1: cooks food, Like why would you try and to steal
- 3:59Speaker 1: my whole life into this one couple of months period.
- 4:02Speaker 1: But I think if you take that out of it,
- 4:04Speaker 1: like I think he genuinely would have been so impressed
- 4:07Speaker 1: with Dominiccess's performance, and he is so good as a
- 4:11Speaker 1: young Anthony Bourdain. He's got that kind of punk rock
- 4:14Speaker 1: vibe also has those insecurities, the fake it till you
- 4:17Speaker 1: make it vibe, which he does so well. Antonio Banderiz
- 4:21Speaker 1: is also great for me. Maybe a little bit too
- 4:23Speaker 1: much like a mister Miyagi. It's kind of it's kind
- 4:26Speaker 1: of a bit like a paint the fence and if
- 4:29Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, it's beautiful as well. I
- 4:32Speaker 1: don't know if you saw the film BlackBerry, that film
- 4:34Speaker 1: about the origin story of the BlackBerry. So same director.
- 4:39Speaker 1: That's a really good film, so he knows what he's doing.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Maybe maybe a bit of style over substance. And if
- 4:44Speaker 1: this film was a recipe, I think the director maybe
- 4:46Speaker 1: added a bit too much cheese. Too much cheese. How
- 4:49Speaker 1: many Michelin stars mic drop three and a half. Definitely
- 4:59Speaker 1: for the an any bordained fans, you've got to watch it.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Those Dominice staff Michelin stars. That's that's a good meal.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Go back for seconds.
