- 0:00Hello and welcome to Fostering Faith. Today on our fourth episode we will be talking about Joy.
- 0:06Okay mom, I got some questions for you. So these questions will be just about the podcast and everything.
- 0:13What do you think Joy means? Like a definition of it?
- 0:17Joy to me would be, or what I think the definition of Joy is, something that gives you like pleasure, happiness in an object or person, something that just gives you like a breath, like something that you just, like it just relaxes you.
- 0:45Okay, the actual definition from the dictionary is a great, is a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. So you're like really close.
- 0:54Okay.
- 0:55Okay, but I also feel like Joy has another definition which I think is Jesus. Cause like Jesus, like there's so many things like in the Bible that talks about joy and everything.
- 1:06Like Jesus and God gives us so much joy and happiness and he gives us an opportunity to feel like joy, if you like.
- 1:15And I think that walking in your relationship with God, I think that your personal definition of what you get joy out of, I think will change. What used to bring you happiness and joy, I think will change as your faith journey matures.
- 1:43Yeah, yeah.
- 1:44Okay, so my second question I got, what is something that brings you joy and like explain why?
- 1:56Something that brings me joy and it may sound like, it just may sound weird, but I love reading scripture. I love getting up in the morning. I love whenever he gets me up at 330, 4 o'clock and I get to come in here into my prayer room and I get to read the word and how the God of the Universe,
- 2:25sits down with me and talks to me and he opens up scripture, he opens up my eyes to see something new every day.
- 2:36To me, that brings me so much joy.
- 2:41I feel like another thing in the Bible that I feel like some people skip over, but a lot of people know it since they were kids, it's the fruit of the spirit and one of the fruits of the spirit is joy, which I feel like I've always known the fruit of the spirit but never really got deep into one of the fruits of the spirit real deep.
- 3:04I feel like joy is one of my favorite fruits of the spirit.
- 3:07Okay, where can people find the fruits of the spirit?
- 3:11No idea, but like, it's somewhere.
- 3:15Inglations?
- 3:16Sure.
- 3:17Can you name the fruits of the spirit?
- 3:19Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, alivist, generals, and self-control.
- 3:23Yes.
- 3:24I feel like my second favorite is self-control, but like...
- 3:27That's something I think that we all lack.
- 3:29Self-control.
- 3:31Yes, do you want to sing this song?
- 3:34Absolutely not.
- 3:35Okay.
- 3:37Okay, my next question is, what are two verses in the Bible that brings you joy or like that's your favorite thing that like, like involves joy and why?
- 3:51And so there's, there's several scriptures that have to do with joy. The one that comes to mind would be Psalm 66, I think, 66.1.
- 4:10Shout for joy to God, all the earth, sing glory in his name, give him glorious praise, say to God, how awesome are your deeds.
- 4:21So great is powerful that your enemies come cringing to you.
- 4:26And so I think that just all the earth can worship God.
- 4:31The Psalm opens with a universal call to shout for joy to God and all the earth. And it is about just worshiping the one true God and just to think about worshiping and lifting your hands.
- 4:45And it just makes a smile on your face.
- 4:48You know, to worship the one true God, the creating of all the things every human can generally express.
- 4:55The love and worship and know that you are part of the worship in heaven.
- 5:03And there's a bowl glowing in heaven knowing that you're down here worshiping the one true God.
- 5:12I'm just to just sit back and think of that scripture. I mean, just seeing shout for joy.
- 5:20I just, I just, I just, it just makes me smile.
- 5:23Okay, I think one of my favorite verses I couldn't find too, like if I had a big two, Galatians, the free spirit to God one.
- 5:30And this one I found it's Psalm 1611.
- 5:34You make note of the path and you, you'll feel my joy. That's just half of it though.
- 5:40But like that just had joy in it.
- 5:42And like, I feel like that's more of my favorites, because it says that you know the path in my life.
- 5:49And like, and you fill me with joy and like that really like, like soaks into me like a lot and like, it feels good.
- 5:58I also like Habakkuk 316.
- 6:03And so it says, I hear my body tremble and my lips quiver at the sound, rottenness enters my bones, my legs tremble beneath me.
- 6:11Yet I'm quiet and wait the day of trouble to become what the Lord invades through the fig tree would not blossom nor fruit in the vines and produce the olive fail and the leaves fields yield no food and the flock to be with a fold and there is no herd or salt yet I rejoice in the Lord.
- 6:30I will take joy in the Lord of my salvation.
- 6:33God, the Lord is my strength. He makes my feet like deers and makes me tread on high places.
- 6:41And so if you look in context, Habakkuk was trying to do everything in his own way, but he surrendered and he radically changed because he was in, he was informing God how to run his world.
- 6:55Like he was telling God how we often do like, Hey, why don't you do this? Hey, why don't you do this? Why are you not healing them?
- 7:01Hey, why don't you give me this? And I really want those basketball shoes and I really want to win the lottery and I really want a new car and I want a new house.
- 7:08But then he ended it by trusting God, knowing that God knows best and will bring everything to justice.
- 7:17He will give us what we need and far beyond what our expectations are.
- 7:22And so by that, he will rejoice in the Lord and take the joy of my salvation. And so just knowing and putting our faith and trust in God brings you joy because that lifts that weight, that burden that you were never meant to carry anyway.
- 7:43So I think that that is a great thing for joy because we often try even still because we read scripture and we're like, Man, these people are stupid.
- 7:55Like why are they not trusting in God? And yet we hear nowadays, we still do the same thing. We don't trust in him.
- 8:02And once we turn that problem over, like we really do have that, that peace and that joy that he gives us.
- 8:11Okay. Okay. Why do you think that people don't have joy? Like, why do you think that?
- 8:20Oh, for lots of reasons. I love in clinic where we can walk through people's journey in life and you can really see how people were strong in their faith.
- 8:36They prayed, they didn't get what they wanted, and they turn from God and depression and anxiety and lack of joy because we're turning to earthly things for our joy, money, people, and to have that peace and that joy.
- 8:54We have to get it from the Lord because he is that rock. He is that firm foundation.
- 8:59So if we're putting all of our coins in a person and they change and we lose our joy, if we're putting all of our joy and money that can be taken from us, if we put our joy into our job and that it goes away, then we lose that joy.
- 9:14But if we put our joy in that one true God that can never be taken from us. And so I think that putting all of your, your hope and your dreams in a materialistic thing, I think is one aspect.
- 9:31And the other one, if you don't have joy, if you don't have God in your life, if you're not surrounded with, with scripture and just the presence of God, I think that people lack it because he is joy. He is love.
- 9:47So I think those would be the two big reasons that I have seen.
- 9:51And I also see like people like gone through trials and everything like they just lose joy because they keep on like losing in life and everything like they've gone through so many trials that they just lost it.
- 10:04And I think that that's important too to pick out because, you know, God never said that following him was going to be easy.
- 10:12I mean, we also have to remember that he said I set the table in the midst of your enemies. He never said that life as a Christian was going to be easy.
- 10:22And so we need to expect trials, we need to expect tribulations because they're going to come, we know that.
- 10:29And just thinking of all the followers of Jesus, even just back in scripture was they, they died.
- 10:37I mean, people got, you know, stoned to death because of him, you know, because of their faith.
- 10:43And we really have to, you know, pay attention because there is, you know, the evil one, he is out to seek, kill and destroy us.
- 10:51And so as we get stronger in our faith, there is, you know, demonic things that can happen to us because he does not want us on Team Jesus.
- 11:00He wants us on Team, you know, devil and we really have to stay strong in our faith whenever we are seeking joy, whenever we're seeking the Lord's presence.
- 11:11And I think that that can be very discouraging, but that was a good point is that people get, they pray and they don't see things, bad things happen and yeah, and that can make people lose their joy.
- 11:23Okay, this is my last question. Why do you think it, joy has brought up so much in the Bible?
- 11:29Because joy is so important. I mean, because the joy of the Lord is there. I mean, in scripture, I mean, like over 10 times joy is mentioned.
- 11:48I mean, in Psalms, it's mentioned a bunch in Habakkuk and Luke and Galatians and 1st Athelonians and James, 1st Peter.
- 11:56Joyful, I mean, because it's so important. I mean, it's a fruit of a spirit. And so if you have, if you've accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you have that Holy Spirit.
- 12:09And so therefore that Holy Spirit is in you. So you have that love, that joy, that peace, that patience, that kindness, that gentleness, and you have that self control.
- 12:19And so it's about, you know, holding it in and reigning it in. I mean, life without joy would suck.
- 12:28I mean, so I think it's so important to have joy in the midst of your trials, of the midst of life every day.
- 12:36And to me, putting the joy is by starting with scripture every morning. I have to do it.
- 12:43Or I'm just not settled in on my day. I've not talked to the one that has created my day. He knows my problems. He knows everything.
- 12:51And so I have that joy and I'm filled up with him before I leave this house and so I can pour out, you know, to other people.
- 13:00I feel like that was a great way to end the podcast.
- 13:03And so I think that let's pray for our viewers. Let's pray for the people that are listening.
- 13:08And so dear Heavenly Father, thank you for today. Thank you for yesterday. Thank you that you've allowed us to be in your presence.
- 13:15Thank you that we are searching for joy, that we are searching for your presence.
- 13:19I pray that you allow us to find the joy that we've been looking for, the joy in you.
- 13:24Thank you for the thirst, the word. Thank you for everything that you do for us.
- 13:28In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
- 13:31Well, bye guys and thank you for tuning into this podcast.
- 13:36And I will see you next week.
