Speaker 2: be a lot cooler and windier when I head home
• 1:36
Speaker 2: or when you head out for high school football tonight.
• 1:37
Speaker 2: Temps are going to drop majorly. This afternoon, showers and
• 1:41
Speaker 2: storms may develop in some areas. The rain should end tonight,
• 1:43
Speaker 2: but it will be wet and windy at your favorite
• 1:45
Speaker 2: stadium tonight. Overnight lows are going to be in the mid-40s. Windy,
• 1:48
Speaker 2: much colder tomorrow. High temperatures tomorrow in the mid-50s. We'll
• 1:52
Speaker 2: get our first frost of the season overnight Saturday into Sunday.
• 1:55
Speaker 2: We'll get some sun, though, on Sunday, really Sunday through Tuesday.

Speaker 2: Download the Metro News television app, follow Brian and his

• 2:08
Speaker 2: up this morning. Tomorrow is homecoming in Morgantown, and the
• 2:12
Speaker 2: Mountaineers are set to take on Cincinnati. If you want
• 2:14
Speaker 2: to go to the game, our good buddy Dick Daugherty
• 2:17
Speaker 2: and also Tom Potts from the Kanawha Fellowship Home, well,
• 2:20
Speaker 2: they want to send you and make a little money
• 2:22
Speaker 2: for the Fellowship Home. I got all the details coming up. Also,
• 2:26
Speaker 2: if you're into the band thing, there's a huge band

Speaker 2: competition happening tomorrow at Riverside High School. We'll talk about that.
• 2:31
Speaker 2: Also going on tomorrow, West Virginia Health Rights, their annual
• 2:34
Speaker 2: free medical, dental, and vision care event at their place.
• 2:36
Speaker 2: They call it We Care West Virginia.
• 2:38
  Speaker 6: Dr.
• 2:38
Speaker 2: Angie Settle from Health Rights is going to join me
• 2:40
Speaker 2: to talk about that. And if we can get the
• 2:41
Speaker 2: timing worked out, we're still working on this, Dr. Tom Takuba,
• 2:45
Speaker 2: state senator, and Dr. Tom Takuba will join me and
• 2:47
Speaker 2: Angie coming up a little bit later on in the show. Plus,
• 2:49
Speaker 2: your calls and texts are always welcome. Guarantee Bank Hotline 304-345-5858.

• 2:53
  Speaker 2: Taylor, text.
• 2:56
  Speaker 5: 304-935-5008.
• 2:57
Speaker 2: It is Friday, though, meaning we try to get a
• 3:01
Speaker 2: pet adopted. It's the Adopt Me Please Pet of the Week,
• 3:03
Speaker 2: sponsored by Almost Heaven Interiors. Welcome to the show now,
• 3:06
Speaker 2: Angie Gillenwater, Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association. Good morning, Angie, and welcome
• 3:11
Speaker 2: to the show, and happy Friday.
• 3:13
  Speaker 7: Good morning.
• 3:13
Speaker 8: I'm happy to be here, and also thank goodness it's Friday.
• 3:16
Speaker 2: Yes, indeed. Our pet is posted, as always, Dave Allen
• 3:20
Speaker 2: Radio and Facebook, and the WCHS Network Facebook page, and
• 3:23
Speaker 2: Dave Allen on X. Tell us about Kylo, and you've
• 3:27
Speaker 2: got to explain the name.
• 3:30
Speaker 8: So Kylo comes from, I'm pretty sure, Star Wars is
• 3:33
Speaker 8: what they were referring to. The character Kylo Ren, I
• 3:37
Speaker 8: would almost 100% bet that is why his name is that.
• 3:41
Speaker 8: A lot of people at the shelter.
• 3:42
Speaker 2: Ryan is shaking his head through the glass, so Ryan
• 3:45
Speaker 2: has confirmed it. Kylo is a reference to a Star
• 3:49
Speaker 2: Wars character. All right, so tell us about Kylo. Tell
• 3:51
  Speaker 2: us Kylo's story.
• 3:53
Speaker 8: So Kylo was found as a stray originally when he
• 3:56
Speaker 8: first came to KCHA. He was very, very sick. Our
• 4:00
Speaker 8: medical team got him nursed back to health. And now
• 4:03
Speaker 8: that he is available for adoption, he is the sweetest cat.
• 4:06
Speaker 8: Our cat care coordinator actually said that he is her
• 4:09
Speaker 8: favorite cat that we have right now. He's about five
• 4:12
Speaker 8: months old, just a little under five months old, neutered
• 4:16
Speaker 8: and ready to go home today.
• 4:18
Speaker 2: And a beautiful, beautiful cat. And again, you can check
• 4:21
Speaker 2: out the picture. over on my social media, also the
• 4:24
Speaker 2: WCHS Network Facebook page as well. And so, again, they
• 4:28
Speaker 2: were brought in. They were siblings, as you said, Angie,
• 4:31
Speaker 2: and all the other ones got adopted. It's a shame
• 4:33
Speaker 2: that Kylo has not been adopted, but we're going to
• 4:35
Speaker 2: try to remedy that today.
• 4:37
Speaker 8: Yeah, hopefully Kylo is out of the shelter by the
• 4:40
Speaker 8: end of the day today. Yep, he's the only one
• 4:42
Speaker 8: left from his litter, and he is very, very lonely.
• 4:45
Speaker 2: Well, we'll try to get, again, a very, very sweet
• 4:47
Speaker 2: cat disposition, as you alluded to. Angie, you've got a
• 4:52
Speaker 2: picture that's posted on your Facebook page, the Charles Newman Association.
• 4:57
Speaker 2: And the way I looked at that this morning, and
• 5:00
Speaker 2: as a pet lover, I said, that is sheer joy
• 5:03
Speaker 2: as a dog owner and his best friend were reunited.
• 5:07
Speaker 2: I don't know if you're familiar with the story or not,
• 5:09
Speaker 2: if you're at liberty to discuss it. But if people
• 5:11
Speaker 2: haven't had an opportunity, go over to the Facebook page
• 5:14
Speaker 2: and check it out. What's the story there, or are
• 5:15
Speaker 2: you allowed to talk about it?
• 5:18
Speaker 8: So the dog in question, he was missing for a
• 5:22
Speaker 8: couple days just as a regular stray, nothing too crazy.
• 5:26
Speaker 8: And his owner saw that he was at KCHA and
• 5:30
Speaker 8: came up. He had been searching for days for him,
• 5:32
Speaker 8: and he came up. And as soon as they were reunited,
• 5:36
Speaker 8: his dog jumped into his lap immediately, was just wagging
• 5:40
Speaker 8: his tail, all the things, knocked his hat off his head.
• 5:43
Speaker 8: He was so excited to see him.
• 5:45
  Speaker 9: Yeah.
• 5:46
Speaker 8: And you can see one of our staff members in
• 5:47
Speaker 8: the back, like, holding her chest, like, pointing to her heart,
• 5:50
Speaker 8: and that exactly is what those moments do for us.
• 5:54
Speaker 2: I tell you, I've been accused of being, you know,
• 5:55
Speaker 2: cold-hearted at times, but you know I'm not when it
• 5:57
Speaker 2: comes to animals. And one way to definitely get me,
• 6:02
Speaker 2: and sometimes I've been known to go down the rabbit
• 6:04
Speaker 2: hole and look at these videos on YouTube and whatever
• 6:08
Speaker 2: of pets being reunited. And I mean, some a lot
• 6:12
Speaker 2: longer than that. I mean, some is like two years.
• 6:15
Speaker 2: And animals, and again, I'm not, you're the animal expert here,
• 6:18
Speaker 2: not me. Animals don't always recognize people by sight, but
• 6:22
Speaker 2: if it's been a long time, they will remember the smell.
• 6:26
Speaker 2: And I've seen so many videos about that when, you know,
• 6:30
Speaker 2: been separated for two to three years and a dog
• 6:34
Speaker 2: would come up to the person, sniff them. And then
• 6:36
Speaker 2: it was like, boom, all bets are off. It's a
• 6:40
  Speaker 2: party now.
• 6:42
Speaker 8: Yeah. We actually had a story like that ourselves, where
• 6:45
Speaker 8: a dog ended up in West Virginia that was from Georgia.
• 6:48
Speaker 8: When we got him home, he kind of was a
• 6:50
Speaker 8: little weary of his owner. And then as soon as
• 6:52
Speaker 8: he got the smell of his owner, it immediately was
• 6:56
Speaker 8: like you said, it was like, boom, like the tail
• 6:57
Speaker 8: was wagging all that.
• 6:59
Speaker 2: So Good stuff. All right. So I didn't make it
• 7:02
Speaker 2: over there last week. I apologize. But I know that
• 7:04
Speaker 2: you had the caravan out of my neighborhood in Taze Valley.
• 7:08
Speaker 2: How did you guys do out there? And that thing
• 7:10
Speaker 2: is really, really a blessing for the shelter to have that.
• 7:13
Speaker 8: Yes. So we actually got three kittens adopted, which was
• 7:17
Speaker 8: super exciting. All are exciting. All two like preteen age
• 7:21
Speaker 8: little girls that were so excited to have cats, which
• 7:24
Speaker 8: was also really cute. So, yes, the caravan was very
• 7:28
Speaker 8: crucial in making that happen, especially when the rain started
• 7:31
Speaker 8: to come down on us last weekend. It was very,
• 7:35
Speaker 8: very important to have that vehicle.
• 7:37
Speaker 2: Are you guys going to be out anywhere this weekend?
• 7:39
Speaker 8: We actually are. Tomorrow we'll be at Clayton Homes off
• 7:42
Speaker 8: of 119 near Alum Creek area. Adoption fees are going
• 7:46
Speaker 8: to be sponsored. They're having a little trick-or-treat type situation
• 7:50
Speaker 8: with a lot of other fun activities besides us being there.
• 7:54
Speaker 8: So if you're looking to add to your family or
• 7:57
Speaker 8: visit with some shelter pets, we'll be there from 12
• 7:59
Speaker 8: to 4. All right.
• 8:01
Speaker 2: I got a text for you. You know you're popular.
• 8:02
Speaker 2: You always have fan mail. It says, for Angie, this
• 8:06
Speaker 2: is about the KCHA Facebook post of the dog currently
• 8:09
Speaker 2: being held at the South Charleston Police Station. He's a
• 8:12
Speaker 2: male found on Macon Street wearing a black collar he
• 8:15
Speaker 2: has on in the photo. He's been caught twice by
• 8:17
Speaker 2: different people at different times. Replies in the post state
• 8:20
Speaker 2: his name is JD, and he belongs to Squatters in
• 8:23
Speaker 2: Graceland Circle, but they don't want him. Neighbors feed him.
• 8:26
Speaker 2: He was returned to the owner. They had zero interest
• 8:28
Speaker 2: in him. What can be done to stop this and
• 8:30
Speaker 2: give these neglected dogs the love they deserve? And can
• 8:33
  Speaker 2: charges be filed?
• 8:36
Speaker 8: So the charges being filed would have to go through,
• 8:39
Speaker 8: since this would be a South Charleston case and they
• 8:43
Speaker 8: do have their own humane officer, the charges themselves would
• 8:45
Speaker 8: have to be filed through the South Charleston Police Department
• 8:48
Speaker 8: at the discretion of that humane officer. So that gets
• 8:54
Speaker 8: a little difficult, a little dicey to actually make those
• 8:58
Speaker 8: charges stick. However, the dog, if he is not, you know,
• 9:02
Speaker 8: reclaimed in a five-day period, obviously at our shelter we
• 9:07
Speaker 8: followed West Virginia state law where if they are not
• 9:09
Speaker 8: reclaimed in that five-day period, then they are placed available
• 9:12
Speaker 8: for adoption. So it sounds like if these people do
• 9:15
Speaker 8: not want this dog, that will happen within that five-day period. Uh, the,
• 9:20
Speaker 8: that is not something that we, uh, you know, do
• 9:23
Speaker 8: just because again, it is state law that if a
• 9:26
Speaker 8: stray dog comes in, we, any animal shelter or rescue
• 9:29
Speaker 8: does have to hold it for a mandatory five day period.
• 9:32
Speaker 2: And, uh, the followup text said he's a beautiful dog.
• 9:35
Speaker 8: So he absolutely is.
• 9:36
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 9:36
Speaker 8: Very interesting color. It's like a, like a black gray color.
• 9:39
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 9:40
  Speaker 10: Yeah.
• 9:41
Speaker 2: Uh, any certain needs that you guys have? I mean,
• 9:43
Speaker 2: anything in particular right now?
• 9:46
Speaker 8: So right now, the biggest needs are going to be
• 9:48
Speaker 8: any type of cleaning supply, paper towels, gloves, dishwashing liquid,
• 9:52
Speaker 8: all of the above, Purina dog chow, Purina cat chow,
• 9:56
Speaker 8: and linens, blankets, towels, sheets, all of that.
• 10:00
Speaker 10: Of the above on that.
• 10:01
  Speaker 7: All right.
• 10:02
Speaker 2: Angie Gilliwater, Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association, as always. I appreciate you
• 10:06
Speaker 2: being here, and we always try to get a little–
• 10:09
Speaker 2: sometimes we have a little bad news, but we like
• 10:10
Speaker 2: to have more good news than bad coming up because
• 10:12
Speaker 2: you guys are doing great work up there, and we
• 10:14
Speaker 2: appreciate everything that you do. And we'll talk again next week.
• 10:17
  Speaker 2: Thanks a lot.
• 10:17
Speaker 8: Yeah, thank you so much. Have a good weekend.
• 10:19
Speaker 2: You as well. All right, Angie Gillenwater, Canal Charleston Humane Association,
• 10:22

• 10:25
Speaker 2: brought to you by Almost Heaven Interiors. It's a cat
• 10:27
Speaker 2: by the name of Kylo. And Ryan and Angie tell
• 10:30
Speaker 2: me Kylo comes from the Star Wars world. He's five
• 10:36
Speaker 2: months old. He was found along with his siblings in
• 10:38
Speaker 2: the Oak View area. Now, he was very, very sick.
• 10:41
Speaker 2: He and his siblings, when they came in, they got
• 10:42
Speaker 2: him all back to health, 100% clean bill of health.
• 10:45
Speaker 2: All the others have been adopted except for Kylo. Again,
• 10:49
Speaker 2: five months old, neutered, and make a fantastic pet. He
• 10:52
Speaker 2: is ready to go home. You can see his picture.

• 14:36
Speaker 2: Angie Settle. How you doing?
• 14:37
  Speaker 6: Hey, Dave.
• 14:38
Speaker 15: Thanks for having me on again.
• 14:39
Speaker 2: Thank you for being here. And we are efforting, I understand, Dr.
• 14:42
Speaker 2: Tom Takubo. He's a busy guy. I think he's in Morgantown.
• 14:45
Speaker 15: He's up in Morgantown. He's got 500 jobs.
• 14:47
Speaker 2: I need you to come in close to that microphone, honey. Okay,
• 14:49
Speaker 2: here we are. There you go.
• 14:50
  Speaker 16: There you go.
• 14:50
Speaker 2: There you go. So we are efforting Tom Takubo right now.
• 14:53
Speaker 2: But if not, we'll just hang with just me and you.
• 14:56
Speaker 2: We've done this a time or two.
• 14:57
  Speaker 15: Yes, we have.
• 14:57
Speaker 2: So tell us what's going on tomorrow. Just give us
• 14:59
Speaker 2: the overall view, and then we'll break it down.
• 15:01
  Speaker 15: Wonderful.
• 15:01
Speaker 6: So it's the third annual We Care West Virginia Day.
• 15:05
Speaker 6: It's a great event at 1520 Washington Street East at
• 15:09
Speaker 6: our East End Clinic. And we're going to have free
• 15:12
Speaker 6: medical care, dental care, vision care with people, you know,
• 15:15
Speaker 6: picking out glasses, some vaccines, like flu shots, etc. So
• 15:22
Speaker 6: it'll be an all-day event for anybody in need. No
• 15:25
Speaker 6: questions asked, no income verification, anything like that. We're not
• 15:28
Speaker 6: going to ask you about insurance. But just a great
• 15:31
Speaker 6: day for West Virginians to take care of West Virginians
• 15:34
Speaker 6: and provide that much needed care. We know there's a
• 15:36
Speaker 6: lot of people out there struggling, and we just want
• 15:39
Speaker 6: to have a day for people to come, you know,
• 15:40
Speaker 6: take care of themselves.
• 15:42
Speaker 2: And where did the whole idea come from to do this?
• 15:45
Speaker 2: I mean, we know about the need. I get that.
• 15:46
  Speaker 10: Right.
• 15:47
  Speaker 2: But there's a need and then there's a way to
• 15:49
Speaker 2: kind of put it all together.
• 15:50
Speaker 6: Well, you know, this is what we do all day,
• 15:52
Speaker 6: every day, year round. But it's kind of like what
• 15:54
Speaker 6: we do on steroids because we're able to have so
• 15:56
Speaker 6: many volunteers and do 500 people in one day. But
• 16:00
Speaker 6: we traditionally had an event with Remote Area Medical Center,
• 16:04
Speaker 6: which is a group out of Tennessee that started in 2016.
• 16:06
Speaker 6: That actually started Dr. Tom Takubo and Dr. Chris Stansbury
• 16:12
Speaker 6: were leads on that with me. after the floods and
• 16:15
Speaker 6: we worked with them many many many years all the
• 16:17
Speaker 6: way up until let's see 2023 and at the time
• 16:22
Speaker 6: you know we've just grown so big at health right
• 16:24
Speaker 6: we were getting ready to finish the east end building
• 16:26
Speaker 6: and you know we just decided at that point we
• 16:28
Speaker 6: were big enough and they decided with us hey you
• 16:30
Speaker 6: guys can really do this on your own which we
• 16:33
Speaker 6: love them we still love them wish them well but
• 16:35
Speaker 6: it allowed us to just change the times up a
• 16:36
Speaker 6: little bit we start a little bit later a little
• 16:39
Speaker 6: bit more flexibility we have our pharmacy there etc so Basically,
• 16:44
Speaker 6: it's the same event, except we've changed the name because
• 16:47
Speaker 6: it's just a West Virginia Health Rate event now. But,
• 16:50
Speaker 6: you know, we just picked We Care West Virginia Day because,
• 16:53
Speaker 6: you know, we care about our friends and neighbors and
• 16:55
Speaker 6: we want to have a day, you know, to just.
• 16:57
Speaker 15: Take care of them.
• 16:57
Speaker 2: And so many people.
• 16:59
  Speaker 15: Absolutely.
• 16:59
Speaker 2: Come out for this thing. I mean, you're like, what, 500?
• 17:01
Speaker 2: Is that what you have?
• 17:03
Speaker 15: We had 500 the past two years.
• 17:04
Speaker 6: And what really sets the number is basically how many
• 17:07
Speaker 6: volunteers we have. So how many IDOCs we get, how
• 17:10
Speaker 6: many dentists that we get. And these are people, a
• 17:12
Speaker 6: lot of them, they volunteered health for like, you know,
• 17:14
Speaker 6: year round, you know, day a month, couple days a month.
• 17:17
Speaker 6: And we just get them to all come on that day.
• 17:19
Speaker 6: And it is a fun day for them, too. I mean,
• 17:21
Speaker 6: it's what got all of us into, you know, the
• 17:24
Speaker 6: medical care industry today. When we started, I mean, it
• 17:28
Speaker 6: wasn't because we wanted to fill out, you know, insurance
• 17:30
Speaker 6: paperwork or, you know, get prior authorizations or fight anybody.
• 17:35
Speaker 2: That's the fun stuff.
• 17:36
Speaker 6: That's the fun stuff. This is just, we just want
• 17:38
Speaker 6: to take care of people. That's what got us there.
• 17:40
Speaker 6: And this day is all about that.
• 17:42
Speaker 2: And you do a fantastic job. But I want to
• 17:45
Speaker 2: talk about the people. I want to talk about the
• 17:47
Speaker 2: people that volunteer their services.
• 17:48
  Speaker 7: Yes.
• 17:49
Speaker 2: We'll start with the medical professionals, but there's a lot
• 17:51
Speaker 2: of other people that volunteer to pull it because you
• 17:53
Speaker 2: couldn't pull it off, which is as great as you
• 17:55
  Speaker 2: guys are.
• 17:55
  Speaker 15: Absolutely not.
• 17:57
Speaker 2: Talk about those medical professionals that volunteer their time and efforts.
• 18:00
  Speaker 6: Right.
• 18:00
Speaker 15: So I've mentioned Dr. Tom Takuba.
• 18:03
Speaker 6: He's been our medical lead every year, faithful. You know,
• 18:06
Speaker 6: he's a pulmonologist, very well respected, and he helps lead
• 18:10
Speaker 6: that effort. We get medical students.
• 18:12
  Speaker 15: Dr.
• 18:13
Speaker 6: John Turley, who's our board president, he comes out. It's
• 18:16
Speaker 6: just a great day. We have a lot of nurse practitioners.
• 18:19
Speaker 6: A lot of my staff come out and volunteer. So
• 18:22
Speaker 6: it's just anything and everything, any problem that's going on.
• 18:24
Speaker 6: And it's not like we're just going to be like, hey,
• 18:26
  Speaker 6: see you later.
• 18:27
  Speaker 15: That was great.
• 18:27
Speaker 6: You know, if there's an issue that needs followed up,
• 18:29
Speaker 6: somebody needs an x-ray, somebody needs follow-up, we're going to
• 18:31
Speaker 6: do that as well.
• 18:34
  Speaker 2: Dr.
• 18:34
Speaker 6: Michael Tupta, who's also on my board, he's also my dentist,
• 18:37
Speaker 6: he comes out and heads up our dental department. We
• 18:40
Speaker 6: have so many, so many volunteer dentists. I can't name
• 18:43
Speaker 6: them all, but like the Grebe Dental Group with Sammy Grebe,
• 18:46
Speaker 6: like everybody almost in his practice comes and volunteers. They're
• 18:50
Speaker 6: just a great bunch of people. And then, of course,
• 18:53
Speaker 6: I mentioned Dr. Chris Stansberry.
• 18:55
  Speaker 15: I think Dr.
• 18:56
Speaker 6: Odekirk's coming out. There's several optometrists coming out. And, of course,
• 18:59
Speaker 6: all the support staff, you know, the people that do
• 19:02
Speaker 6: the eye exams and the visual fittings and all of that.
• 19:05
Speaker 6: And just like parking lot attendance, you know, nurses to
• 19:08
Speaker 6: take blood pressures, a lot of medical students, nursing students
• 19:11
Speaker 6: that come in just to do logistical stuff. So it's
• 19:15
  Speaker 6: a full-on effort. We get about 250 to 300 volunteers
• 19:19
Speaker 6: for that event. And we're just really grateful that, you know,
• 19:24
Speaker 6: that people see the need in it and it's been effective. And,
• 19:27
  Speaker 6: you know, it's just, it's been, it's just, It's just
• 19:30
Speaker 6: been a great thing for the community. And it's good
• 19:32
Speaker 6: for us. At the end of the day, you know,
• 19:33
Speaker 6: sometimes we get tired. Sometimes it can be a thankless
• 19:37
Speaker 6: job when you're fighting for people in need.
• 19:40
Speaker 15: Really, it is. I mean, trying to be the voice
• 19:42
Speaker 15: for people that don't have one.
• 19:43
Speaker 6: And, you know, at the end of the day, I
• 19:46
Speaker 6: always come away. There's somebody we saved. There's something we did.
• 19:49
Speaker 6: And when I say saved, you know, we found cancers.
• 19:51
Speaker 6: We found all these things, Dave. There's a story. There's
• 19:55
Speaker 6: always a story. One year, it was a family of
• 19:57
Speaker 6: like six, and they all needed glasses. You know, they
• 19:59
Speaker 6: were like the dad all the way down to like
• 20:01
Speaker 6: a four-year-old, and they all went away with glasses.
• 20:03
  Speaker 15: That was great.
• 20:04
Speaker 6: One year, it was somebody we diagnosed with eye cancer.
• 20:07
Speaker 6: There's always something every year that I, you know, that
• 20:10
Speaker 6: we lock into and I hear, and I'm like, yep,
• 20:12
Speaker 6: that's why we do this.
• 20:14
Speaker 2: I mean, that's exactly what you do. We're talking to Dr.
• 20:16
Speaker 2: Angie Settle of HealthRite. The Dave Allen Show on 580
• 20:18
Speaker 2: Live is brought to you in part by Generations Forward
• 20:21
Speaker 2: of Hurricane. If you're in need of a new or
• 20:22
Speaker 2: used Ford or Ford service, check out Generations Forward. Generations Forward,
• 20:26
Speaker 2: West Virginia's only authorized Ford Roush performance dealer. They are
• 20:30
Speaker 2: just off the Hurricane X of I-64, or you can
• 20:32
Speaker 2: shop online at generationsforward.com. And having all of those people...
• 20:37
Speaker 2: that come together to give up their Saturday because it's
• 20:41
Speaker 2: incredible the amount of people that come up and just
• 20:45
Speaker 2: say in the midst of everything else going on, you know,
• 20:47
Speaker 2: WVU homecoming and everybody's doing fall things tomorrow. It's actually
• 20:51
Speaker 2: going to feel like Baltimore.
• 20:52
Speaker 6: So we're like having a little tailgate thing too for
• 20:54
Speaker 6: the volunteers to try to draw them in. We're going
• 20:56
Speaker 6: to have the game on, a little tailgate theme.
• 20:58
Speaker 2: And that's what I wanted to say was they're giving
• 21:00
Speaker 2: up all this to come out To help people. Absolutely.
• 21:03
Speaker 2: I mean, that's what the benefit is here. I mean,
• 21:05
Speaker 2: you know, the only benefit is trying to help people.
• 21:08
Speaker 15: Well, and I know a lot of times people go in.
• 21:10
Speaker 15: I've had it happen to me.
• 21:11
  Speaker 6: And you're like, man, they're just punching a clock. They're
• 21:14
Speaker 6: just here to get a paycheck, you know. I want
• 21:16
Speaker 6: everybody to know, anybody, when you're in line tomorrow, there
• 21:18
Speaker 6: are some lines and we're trying to get people through.
• 21:21
Speaker 6: Anybody that you see is there of their own free will,
• 21:24
Speaker 6: they took this day. They said, I want to be
• 21:27
Speaker 6: here to help people. So everybody that you're going to find,
• 21:29
Speaker 6: you know, it's going to be a smiling, happy face.
• 21:31
Speaker 6: And you're going to know they're there for the right reason.
• 21:34
Speaker 6: And they do care about you.
• 21:35
Speaker 2: Absolutely. Absolutely. And it just, the thing has just grown. So,
• 21:39
Speaker 2: and again, it's in Charleston tomorrow, but people come from
• 21:43
  Speaker 2: all over.
• 21:44
Speaker 6: We even have people from outside of West Virginia that travel.
• 21:47
Speaker 2: Did you hear about it?
• 21:48
Speaker 6: Yeah, we actually, last year we had somebody that wanted to,
• 21:52
Speaker 6: it's terrible, that they wanted to, they stayed in their
• 21:54
Speaker 6: car at like 6 p.m. on Friday through the next day. which,
• 21:58
Speaker 6: you know, I hate to see that, but that's, you know,
• 22:00
Speaker 6: the need is there. So anybody that's willing to come,
• 22:04
Speaker 6: have a little patience, you know, wait, and we're getting
• 22:07
Speaker 6: better every year. You know, you try to figure out
• 22:09
Speaker 6: a way to streamline things. What went right, what went wrong. Yeah,
• 22:12
Speaker 6: and we always have a meeting after, okay, here's what
• 22:14
Speaker 6: we need to fix. Here's what we did great. Here's
• 22:16
Speaker 6: what we can do better. But, you know, it's just
• 22:21
Speaker 6: a great day. It truly is. It just, you know,
• 22:23
Speaker 6: it always warms my heart, and I always come away feeling,
• 22:26
Speaker 6: you know, Invigorated and like, okay, this is why I do.
• 22:30
Speaker 15: This in my life.
• 22:31
Speaker 2: I think all of us sometimes need a little recharge.
• 22:34
  Speaker 15: Absolutely.
• 22:35
Speaker 2: When you have a job that has a lot of stress,
• 22:39
Speaker 2: like the healthcare field. And every now and then, as
• 22:41
Speaker 2: you said, you're battling with insurance companies, you're doing pre-authorizations
• 22:45
Speaker 2: and all that stuff. That seems like what you do,
• 22:50
Speaker 2: but then you have that one moment and everybody needs
• 22:53
Speaker 2: it every so often to say, okay, that's why I
• 22:56
Speaker 2: do what I do. Teachers go through it all the time.
• 22:58
Speaker 2: I'm sure police officers go through it all the time.
• 23:01
Speaker 2: You got to have that one moment.
• 23:03
  Speaker 17: Yeah.
• 23:03
Speaker 6: Well, you can imagine when your patients, over half of
• 23:05
Speaker 6: them have no insurance, the rest are Medicaid or Medicare.
• 23:09
Speaker 6: And so it's always a struggle to get the underinsured
• 23:13
Speaker 6: and uninsured care. So we're constantly battling that. finding volunteers,
• 23:17
Speaker 6: trying to, you know, Jimmy for this and for that.
• 23:20
Speaker 6: So it's an all day, everyday thing. We get a
• 23:22
Speaker 6: lot of people coming in with, you know, that are
• 23:25
Speaker 6: just struggling. And so you have to be there when
• 23:27
Speaker 6: they come in. You got to be at your, you know,
• 23:29
Speaker 6: you got to be on your A game and be
• 23:31
Speaker 6: there to, you know, pour out of yourself. So yeah,
• 23:33
Speaker 6: this is a day to just, for us as well,
• 23:35
Speaker 6: it makes us feel good.
• 23:37
Speaker 2: At a Texas, what time do people start lining up?
• 23:39
Speaker 2: I mean, you told us the story earlier about people
• 23:41
Speaker 2: that were in their cars.
• 23:42
Speaker 15: So the doors open at 8, okay?
• 23:44
Speaker 6: And I want to deter people because also if you say, oh,
• 23:46
Speaker 6: we got people lined up at 3 a.m., people are like, oh,
• 23:48
Speaker 6: I'm not going to that.
• 23:49
Speaker 15: And it's not like that.
• 23:51
Speaker 6: I can't determine how eager people are going to be.
• 23:54
Speaker 6: I will tell you. You know, are there people there
• 23:56
Speaker 6: at six? Yes, there are people there at six. You know,
• 23:59
Speaker 6: we'll get as many people through as possible. I don't
• 24:02
Speaker 6: want people to be deterred and think, well, it's not
• 24:04
Speaker 6: worth it. I will say if we are going along
• 24:07
Speaker 6: that day and we're going faster than we thought and
• 24:09
Speaker 6: we like because we try to guess to me how
• 24:11
Speaker 6: many we'll take. We'll add more later. So don't be
• 24:14
Speaker 6: deterred by it. You know, come out early.
• 24:18
  Speaker 15: Just show up.
• 24:19
Speaker 6: We're going to do everything we can in one day.
• 24:22
Speaker 6: Whatever physically possible for anybody to do, we're going to
• 24:25
Speaker 6: do that, and we're going to plan, and we're going
• 24:26
  Speaker 6: to be there.
• 24:27
Speaker 15: We're committed to do that. Just coming early, of course.
• 24:31
Speaker 6: If you're going to go to the Black Friday sale,
• 24:34
Speaker 6: the early bird is going to be at the front
• 24:36
Speaker 6: of the line, and that's your best chance. But I
• 24:39
Speaker 6: don't want to deter anybody from trying either.
• 24:41
  Speaker 8: Yeah. Yeah.
• 24:42
Speaker 2: And when does it end? What's the time?
• 24:44
Speaker 6: It ends, you know, around 5. But we're going to
• 24:47
Speaker 6: take care of everybody. We're not going to leave anybody hanging.
• 24:49
Speaker 6: We're not going to slam the door and be like, oh,
• 24:51
  Speaker 6: we're done.
• 24:51
  Speaker 2: We're done.
• 24:52
Speaker 6: So, you know, once we make a commitment and we
• 24:54
Speaker 6: take our number for the day, we're going to make
• 24:55
Speaker 6: sure we see all these people.
• 24:57
Speaker 2: And we talked about the volunteers, Angie, that are doing,
• 24:59
Speaker 2: you know, giving up their time, the medical professionals.
• 25:02
  Speaker 7: Right.
• 25:02
Speaker 2: Let's give a little shout out. And we briefly mentioned
• 25:05
Speaker 2: earlier about the shout out about the people that are
• 25:07
Speaker 2: volunteering just for logistics purposes, because a lot of that
• 25:11
  Speaker 2: is important.
• 25:11
  Speaker 15: Absolutely.
• 25:12
Speaker 6: You know, people say, was there any role for a
• 25:14
Speaker 6: lay person? There absolutely is. We have tons of like students.
• 25:18
Speaker 6: We even get like high school student volunteers, you know,
• 25:21
Speaker 6: college students. You know, it's important you have that many
• 25:24
Speaker 6: people coming through that you can logistically get through the
• 25:27
  Speaker 6: parking lot.
• 25:27
Speaker 2: And the people that are helping don't necessarily have to
• 25:30
Speaker 2: be somebody in a health background. You need people to
• 25:32
  Speaker 2: help park people.
• 25:34
Speaker 6: Just even like directions, like, you know, information. Here's, I
• 25:37
Speaker 6: need you to take, you know, patient A from this
• 25:40
Speaker 6: area to this area. And it's a big building and
• 25:42
Speaker 6: we're just running around. So guides, everything like that, information,
• 25:47
Speaker 6: you know, help people. Hand out forms, everything. There's, you know,
• 25:51
Speaker 6: a role for everybody.
• 25:52
Speaker 2: We had a text. Will cancer screenings ever be up
• 25:56
Speaker 2: a part of this for all forms of cancer?
• 25:59
Speaker 6: So we can't do colonoscopies that day. I mean, because
• 26:02
Speaker 6: that's a, you know, they put you under for that.
• 26:04
Speaker 6: But we are doing cancer screenings, you know, breast exams,
• 26:08
Speaker 6: female exams. You know, we can do things tied to
• 26:10
Speaker 6: prostate screenings. We don't have an x-ray machine there. We're
• 26:15
Speaker 6: going to have a mammogram. Vandalia Health has their mammography
• 26:19
Speaker 6: machine there, so we are doing that that day. So
• 26:21
Speaker 6: there are multiple forms of cancer screenings as far as colorectal. Sure,
• 26:25
Speaker 6: you can get the hemocult-like cards where you're checking. I
• 26:28
Speaker 6: don't want to go into all the medical stuff, but
• 26:29
Speaker 6: you can check for blood in the stool. Yeah, I
• 26:31
Speaker 6: won't do that, but I'm saying it is. And if
• 26:33
Speaker 6: there's any kind of reason there, if somebody comes in,
• 26:35
Speaker 6: they have that concern, like, again, it's not a stop light.
• 26:39
Speaker 6: We're going to be like, okay, we can't do this
• 26:41
Speaker 6: test today, but we're going to bring you back.
• 26:42
Speaker 15: We'll get this, this, this, and this done.
• 26:44
Speaker 2: And just to think about over the years, and you
• 26:46
Speaker 2: talked about it, how many people have come to this
• 26:49
Speaker 2: thing just thinking, well, I'm just going to go get
• 26:52
Speaker 2: checked out because it's there, and then you find something.
• 26:54
  Speaker 2: Seriously wrong.
• 26:55
Speaker 15: I can tell you so many stories.
• 26:57
Speaker 2: And save the person's life.
• 26:58
Speaker 15: Like oral cancers, extensive things. I mean, everything. Lung cancers
• 27:03
  Speaker 15: we've picked up.
• 27:04
  Speaker 6: Yeah, it's a lot. It's a lot over the years.
• 27:08
Speaker 6: Because some people just kick that can down the road.
• 27:10
Speaker 6: I mean, it's expensive. Some people are taking care of
• 27:12
Speaker 6: their kids. But this is the data. Even anything preventative,
• 27:15
Speaker 6: if you've put it off, female check, breast exam, all
• 27:19
Speaker 6: that kind of stuff, come in and we'll get it done.
• 27:21
Speaker 2: And as somebody... and you know about this as well,
• 27:24
Speaker 2: as somebody who has battled over the last year prostate cancer,
• 27:28
Speaker 2: I can tell you that don't wait on symptoms because, again,
• 27:33
  Speaker 2: I had none.
• 27:34
  Speaker 5: Zero.
• 27:35
  Speaker 11: Zilch.
• 27:35
Speaker 2: I just went for a checkup.
• 27:38
  Speaker 15: Exactly.
• 27:38
Speaker 2: And my doctor was very concerned about my PSA level.
• 27:42
Speaker 2: And listeners by now know my story. At that point,
• 27:46
Speaker 2: I just said, okay, well, that's fine. I'll get it
• 27:49
Speaker 2: taken care of. And I go back next year. And
• 27:52
Speaker 2: the doctor said, did you ever go? And I said, no.
• 27:54
Speaker 2: He said, okay, it's time to get serious about that
• 27:56
Speaker 2: because your PSA level is not, it's not the highest
• 27:59
Speaker 2: I've ever seen, but it's on its way there. And
• 28:01
Speaker 2: that's when I got serious about it. And, you know,
• 28:04
Speaker 2: I've undergone. My point is don't wait until– this is
• 28:09
Speaker 2: what I try to preach to guys all the time
• 28:11
Speaker 2: and women in other forms of cancer. Do not wait
• 28:14
Speaker 2: until there's a problem because I had no problems whatsoever.
• 28:17
Speaker 2: It was a surprise to me. And they found it
• 28:20
  Speaker 2: in blood tests.
• 28:21
Speaker 6: Well, I mean, my philosophy in it, you know, I'm
• 28:24
Speaker 6: a woman of faith. You know, I think God gave
• 28:26
Speaker 6: us modern medicine and these tests for a reason. You
• 28:28
Speaker 6: need to take advantage of them. And, you know, you
• 28:31
Speaker 6: can't stick your head in the sand and think things
• 28:32
Speaker 6: are going to go away, especially with your case.
• 28:34
Speaker 15: The earlier you can get on something.
• 28:36
  Speaker 2: I tried, apparently.
• 28:36
  Speaker 12: Yeah.
• 28:37
Speaker 6: I mean, the earlier you can find something out, get
• 28:39
Speaker 6: an early diagnosis and do something about it, the better.
• 28:42
Speaker 6: And this is a great way to come out and
• 28:44
Speaker 6: start that process. We can check those things out. All right.
• 28:48
Speaker 2: Give us all the details again, the where's, the times,
• 28:50
Speaker 2: the whole thing, everything that you're doing there.
• 28:52
  Speaker 8: Yes.
• 28:53
Speaker 6: So We Care West Virginia Day is tomorrow, and it's
• 28:56

Speaker 6: Washington Street East. We are right next door to Tudor's.
• 29:04
Speaker 6: If you don't know anything else, you should know where
• 29:06
Speaker 6: Tudor's is on the east end. Everybody knows where that
• 29:07
Speaker 6: one is. And doors open at 8. We go to
• 29:11
Speaker 6: about 5, but we'll take care of everybody. Anybody that
• 29:15
Speaker 6: wants to come, it's vision care, dental care, medical care, vaccines,
• 29:20
Speaker 6: preventative stuff, etc., So, you know, we just ask that
• 29:24
Speaker 6: you come out, have a little patience, understand we're doing,
• 29:27
Speaker 6: we are logistically doing all that we can do. We're
• 29:29
Speaker 6: trying to figure out the best way to do it.
• 29:31
Speaker 6: Every year we get better, um but we plan on
• 29:33
Speaker 6: seeing uh at least 500 people.
• 29:36

• 32:22
Speaker 2: your thing, Riverside High, Warrior Stadium, the place to be tomorrow.
• 32:26
Speaker 2: Sean McAllister is the band director at Riverside. He joins
• 32:28
Speaker 2: us this morning via the Guarantee Bank hotline.
• 32:30
  Speaker 11: Good morning, sir.
• 32:31
Speaker 2: Welcome to the show.
• 32:33
Speaker 7: Good morning. Thanks for having me.
• 32:35
Speaker 2: Thank you for being here. So how many bands have
• 32:36
  Speaker 2: you got coming?
• 32:39
Speaker 7: Well, it was 25. We're down to 24 due to
• 32:43
Speaker 7: a transportation issue with one of them, but 24 is
• 32:45
Speaker 7: still more than enough.
• 32:46
Speaker 2: All right, and a few of them are local. I
• 32:49
Speaker 2: was looking over your list, and one of these is
• 32:51
Speaker 2: not here, you can tell me. I was just trying
• 32:52
Speaker 2: to hit up the local ones. Of course, Riverside, you're
• 32:54
Speaker 2: the host. Capital, Winfield, Systemville, Polka, Hurricane, Buffalo, just some
• 32:59
Speaker 2: of the local schools. But you got schools from all
• 33:02
Speaker 2: over the state that are coming in for this thing.
• 33:06
  Speaker 8: Yes, sir.
• 33:08
Speaker 7: We've got some coming from pretty far. We've got Greenbrier
• 33:11
Speaker 7: East coming up from Lewisburg. Tyler Consolidated is coming down
• 33:14
Speaker 7: from Sisterville. We've got a couple schools out of Parkersburg
• 33:18
Speaker 7: and Williamstown and Parkersburg South. So we've got a pretty
• 33:21
Speaker 7: diverse group coming down to see us tomorrow.
• 33:25
Speaker 2: Talk about the format. Take us through the whole thing.
• 33:28
Speaker 2: What's going to happen tomorrow at this thing?
• 33:35
Speaker 7: So, well, Gates opened at 9 and National Anthem's at 9.45.
• 33:39
Speaker 7: Got my saxophone ensemble playing the National Anthem for everybody.
• 33:44
Speaker 7: And then the first band is on at 10 a.m.
• 33:46
Speaker 7: It's Greenbrier West. And the way it works is. Every
• 33:50
Speaker 7: band gets 15 minutes to perform, and their shows vary
• 33:54
Speaker 7: from 7 minutes to 12 minutes. It just depends on
• 33:57
Speaker 7: what the director wanted to do. And while they're performing,
• 34:02
Speaker 7: we've got a panel of seven judges. They're all music
• 34:07
Speaker 7: educators in their own right. They've all taught bands, but
• 34:12
Speaker 7: they're all phenomenal music educators. And what they do is
• 34:16
Speaker 7: they get a sheet that... It has a rubric on it,
• 34:20
Speaker 7: just like back in English class, whenever you turned a
• 34:23
Speaker 7: paper in and the teacher was like, hey, if you
• 34:27
Speaker 7: do this, this is the grade you're going to get.
• 34:29
Speaker 7: And what the judges do is they actually do a
• 34:31
Speaker 7: voice recording over the course of the entire performance. They're
• 34:34
Speaker 7: up in the press box. And they use that rubric
• 34:36
Speaker 7: to judge each band. And at the end of their performance,
• 34:41
Speaker 7: they'll put in a score using the rubric. And at
• 34:44
Speaker 7: the end of the day, those scores will all be
• 34:46
Speaker 7: tabulated and totaled. And we will award the outstanding bands
• 34:52
Speaker 7: in each division. We have four divisions competing based on
• 34:55
Speaker 7: the number of instrumentalists. That's how it determines what division
• 34:58
Speaker 7: you're in. And we will present awards based on those scores.
• 35:05
Speaker 7: And that just runs through the whole day. We take
• 35:08
Speaker 7: a couple breaks for the judges because it is a
• 35:10
Speaker 7: long day for them. And we ended off. Riverside is
• 35:15
  Speaker 7: in exhibition.
• 35:16
  Speaker 4: At 445 tomorrow.
• 35:18
Speaker 2: Talking to Sean McAllister again, who's the band director at
• 35:21
Speaker 2: Riverside High School. They'll be hosting this big thing tomorrow.
• 35:23
Speaker 2: And I'll tell you, people love these competitions. They say
• 35:27
Speaker 2: that even if they don't have necessarily a kid or
• 35:30
Speaker 2: grandkid in it, it's just a really big deal. These
• 35:32
  Speaker 2: things are huge.
• 35:34
  Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
• 35:37
Speaker 7: And it's kind of an unknown for a lot of people,
• 35:39
Speaker 7: if I'm being honest. If you've never done band or
• 35:43
Speaker 7: been in band, to a lot of people, and this
• 35:46
Speaker 7: is not, I'm not trying to, no insult intended. They
• 35:49
Speaker 7: see the band and they think of it as a
• 35:50
Speaker 7: thing that is at football games on Friday nights or
• 35:55
Speaker 7: they see them in parades, their local parades. But this is,
• 35:58
Speaker 7: for a lot of bands, this is what they're working
• 36:00
Speaker 7: for in the fall. The shows that.
• 36:02
Speaker 4: They see at halftime. on Friday nights are actually usually.
• 36:07
Speaker 7: An incomplete version of what the band has been working
• 36:10
Speaker 7: towards for its competitions. And they are a big deal.
• 36:14
Speaker 7: Most bands do four to seven contests in the fall
• 36:19
Speaker 7: on top of football games and stuff like that. So
• 36:21
  Speaker 7: it's a lot of time.
• 36:24
Speaker 2: Are as many kids going into band these days? Because
• 36:27
Speaker 2: I say that because I know that Teachers and educators
• 36:31
Speaker 2: I've had on the show have said that they have
• 36:33
Speaker 2: a hard time with some kids for one reason or another.
• 36:35
Speaker 2: We won't get into all that. Taking part in extracurricular
• 36:38
Speaker 2: activities in general, whether it's band, whether it's theater, whether
• 36:40
Speaker 2: it's sports, show choir, whatever the case may be, not
• 36:43
Speaker 2: as many kids seemingly want to do this anymore for
• 36:46
Speaker 2: one reason or another. Is band still a pretty hot thing?
• 36:52
  Speaker 8: Well, no.
• 36:53
Speaker 7: It is a struggle. So I'm from Cabell County originally,
• 36:58
Speaker 7: graduated from Cabell Midland, class of 2009.
• 37:01
Speaker 2: You guys just take it to another level, Cabell Midland.
• 37:05
Speaker 7: So when I was in high school, we had 150
• 37:07
Speaker 7: kids in band. Right. And it used to be that,
• 37:11
Speaker 7: at least what I was always told, was if you
• 37:13
Speaker 7: had 10% of your student population in band, that was
• 37:16
  Speaker 7: a healthy band. And I don't know that that's necessarily...
• 37:21
Speaker 7: true anymore mostly because there are so many.
• 37:23
Speaker 4: More options for kids nowadays um even you.
• 37:28
Speaker 7: Know even if they are interested in doing other things
• 37:32
Speaker 7: there are more extracurriculars for them um as you know
• 37:35
Speaker 7: there's been also a proliferation of like club sports and
• 37:37
Speaker 7: things like that that they can do year-round so i
• 37:41
Speaker 7: will say that compared to what it was when i
• 37:44
Speaker 7: was in high school the bands are smaller that is
• 37:47
Speaker 7: true yeah um but also the schools are smaller Good point. Yeah,
• 37:53
Speaker 7: and so just to use my band as an example,
• 37:56
Speaker 7: this is my fifth year at Riverside. When I started
• 37:58
Speaker 7: at Riverside, I had 20 kids in band, and we
• 38:00
Speaker 7: now have almost 65 kids in band.
• 38:02
Speaker 2: Wow, that's quite an increase.
• 38:05
Speaker 7: Yeah, so we're going the right direction. So kids are.
• 38:10
Speaker 4: Still interested in being in band.
• 38:13
Speaker 7: I think that a lot of kids just, but it
• 38:15
Speaker 7: was for me too when I was their age. It's
• 38:18
Speaker 7: a culture shock in the sense that you get into
• 38:21
Speaker 7: it and you're like, oh, it's just band. And you
• 38:23
Speaker 7: realize how much hard work it is. And I don't
• 38:25
  Speaker 7: think that's changed.
• 38:26
Speaker 2: Okay. I want to ask you this before I have
• 38:29
Speaker 2: to let you go. What do you say to a
• 38:31
Speaker 2: parent or grandparent whose child may be thinking or maybe
• 38:36
Speaker 2: trying to talk to their kid about joining band? What
• 38:39
Speaker 2: are some of the lessons that maybe even you going
• 38:41
Speaker 2: back to your days at Cabell Midland, some of the
• 38:43
Speaker 2: lessons that you learned then that you think are very,
• 38:46
  Speaker 2: very important?
• 38:49
Speaker 7: Well, and I'll try to keep this as concise as
• 38:52
Speaker 7: I can. The first one is, yeah, you know, music
• 38:56
Speaker 7: is not, it's not one of your core classes, but
• 39:00
Speaker 7: it does teach you teamwork. It teaches you critical thinking. Um,
• 39:04
Speaker 7: it builds motor skills, like basic motor function. Um, it, it,
• 39:10
Speaker 7: It is one of those things that not only does
• 39:12
Speaker 7: it assist you in all of your other areas. In fact,
• 39:16
Speaker 7: and this data has not been 100% confirmed and quantified,
• 39:20
Speaker 7: but I actually have a colleague at Logan High School.
• 39:24
  Speaker 2: My alma mater.
• 39:26
  Speaker 4: Go Cats.
• 39:27
Speaker 7: So um if you ever get a chance to talk
• 39:29
Speaker 7: it talk to the band director down there he actually
• 39:32
Speaker 7: pulled some data over a three-year period um showing math
• 39:36
Speaker 7: and and english scores test results as well as attendance
• 39:42
Speaker 7: comparing students who are participating in performing arts groups, so
• 39:47
Speaker 7: music ensembles, versus those that don't. And once again, this
• 39:52
Speaker 7: data has not been quantified and gone through all the rigor,
• 39:56
Speaker 7: but just in his first few lookovers and looking at it,
• 40:00
Speaker 7: there is an increase in test scores and reductions in
• 40:05
Speaker 7: chronic absenteeism in students who.
• 40:08
Speaker 4: Are a part of performing arts groups.
• 40:11
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 40:11
Speaker 2: I mean, I can certainly see that. I can certainly
• 40:14
Speaker 2: see that. I'd be interested to take a look at that.
• 40:17
Speaker 2: But I've got to let.
• 40:19
Speaker 4: You get— If I could say one more thing.
• 40:21
  Speaker 12: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 40:22
Speaker 2: No, you're fine. Go ahead.
• 40:24
Speaker 7: So the last thing I want to say to your
• 40:26
Speaker 7: question is so many kids coming up into high school,
• 40:30
Speaker 7: and it's been like.
• 40:31
Speaker 4: This since public school has been a thing, a lot
• 40:33
  Speaker 4: of kids.
• 40:34
Speaker 7: Worry about where they're going to belong. And for many students.

Speaker 4: Especially nowadays, there's a lot of anxiety.
• 40:40
Speaker 7: And things like that about having a place to be.
• 40:43
Speaker 7: And with band, because you start before everyone else, you
• 40:47
Speaker 7: have a group of people who are of every grade,
• 40:52
Speaker 7: and they're there for you. They're your family at the school.
• 40:55
Speaker 7: And so you have a support system built in for
• 40:57
Speaker 7: four years that you wouldn't have otherwise.
• 41:00
Speaker 2: That's a great way to put it.
• 41:01
Speaker 7: That's the thing I like to push, too.
• 41:02
Speaker 2: That's a great way to put it. Everything is happening
• 41:05
Speaker 2: tomorrow at Riverside High School. What time do you start?
• 41:06
Speaker 7: Gates open at 9. The first band is on at 10.
• 41:10
  Speaker 4: All right.
• 41:11
Speaker 2: Sean McAllister, band director of Riverside High School, congratulations on
• 41:15
Speaker 2: pulling this thing off. By the way, we had a text.
• 41:17
Speaker 2: The reason I said congratulations, a text said congrats to
• 41:19
Speaker 2: Riverside for taking festival grand champion at the Majorette Festival
• 41:23
Speaker 2: two weeks ago. They really put on a great show.
• 41:25
Speaker 2: So there you go.
• 41:26
  Speaker 7: Thank you.
• 41:27
Speaker 2: Sean, we'll talk soon, man. Thanks a lot. Thank you
• 41:29
  Speaker 2: for being here.
• 41:30
  Speaker 17: Take care.
• 41:31
  Speaker 4: All right.

• 42:17
Speaker 18: When you're dealing with an injury claim, you need experience,

• 42:45
Speaker 9: law and holds accountable those that disrespect our laws. That's
• 42:49
Speaker 9: why we need Bolts Willis with his experience as a magistrate,
• 42:52
Speaker 9: fraud specialist, instructor, teacher, firefighter, and coal miner to be
• 42:57
Speaker 9: your magistrate. He is quite simply one of us. Vote

Speaker 2: An official message from Medicare.
• 43:40
Speaker 1: Couple more minutes and we'll start this month's book club.
• 43:43
Speaker 2: You know, I usually love a plot twist.
• 43:45
Speaker 7: But this year, I'm comparing my options during Medicare Open Enrollment.
• 43:49
Speaker 2: You can't assume your current health or drug plan is
• 43:51
Speaker 2: the best one for you. And you gotta make sure
• 43:54
Speaker 2: your drugs are covered.
• 43:56
  Speaker 12: That's important.
• 43:57
Speaker 1: So is saving money. Review all your options at Medicare.gov.
• 44:02
Speaker 2: Open enrollment ends December 7th.
• 44:04
Speaker 1: Paid for by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
• 44:13
Speaker 2: Welcome back to the show. There's always comments about being
• 44:18
Speaker 2: band geeks. Take a look at some of your favorite
• 44:20
Speaker 2: celebrities who are members of their marching bands in school.
• 44:22
Speaker 2: Jennifer Garner just won. And take a look at the
• 44:24
Speaker 2: Pride of West Virginia. They're one of the most beloved parts.
• 44:27
Speaker 2: of the WVU football game. Tech says one big thing
• 44:31
Speaker 2: to get more kids interested in band is stop waiting
• 44:34
Speaker 2: until they get into middle school to begin learning how
• 44:36
Speaker 2: to play an instrument. When I was in school in
• 44:38
Speaker 2: the mid-80s, we started in the fifth grade and marching
• 44:42
Speaker 2: in junior high. Homecoming is tomorrow in Morgantown. The Mountaineers,
• 44:46
Speaker 2: of course, will be playing host to Cincinnati. You want
• 44:48
Speaker 2: to go to the game. Well, the folks here are
• 44:50
Speaker 2: good friends with the Kanawha home, would like to send
• 44:55
Speaker 2: you to the game and make some money along the way.
• 44:58
Speaker 2: I'm going to explain that to you. Dick Daugherty is
• 45:00
Speaker 2: here to talk about it in the Jarrett Construction Studios
• 45:02
Speaker 2: along with Tom Potts. Tom, the first time I've met you,
• 45:04
Speaker 2: welcome to the show, sir. Yeah, thank you very much.
• 45:06
Speaker 16: Good to be here.
• 45:07
Speaker 2: And Dick, I've known you for a long time.
• 45:09
  Speaker 11: Yes, sir.
• 45:10
Speaker 2: Great guy. You're a great guy.
• 45:11
Speaker 19: And we're sitting in the Jarrett Construction Studios, too. The
• 45:13
Speaker 19: Jarrett Construction Studio, yeah. Proud friends and partners with John Jarrett.
• 45:18
Speaker 2: All right, so they tell me you get tickets for
• 45:22
Speaker 2: the WVU Cincinnati game tomorrow. Now, we're not allowed legally
• 45:24
Speaker 2: to auction them off, so here's what I was thinking,
• 45:28
Speaker 2: if you're comfortable with this. Tell us what the tickets are,
• 45:31
  Speaker 2: first of all.
• 45:31
Speaker 16: What do you got?
• 45:32
Speaker 19: Okay, I got two sets of two tickets that were
• 45:34
Speaker 19: graciously given to us by Mr. Jarrett, and they are—
• 45:39
Speaker 19: Two of them are in section 216. Two of them
• 45:41
Speaker 19: are in section 103. Both fantastic tickets. One's about 25-yard line.
• 45:48
  Speaker 19: One's close to the 50-yard line. They're great. We're the
• 45:52
Speaker 19: Canal Valley Fellowship home next door in the same block here,
• 45:55
Speaker 19: and we are in a fundraising mode to finish our
• 46:00
Speaker 19: expansion project down the street. My friend Tom Potts is
• 46:02
Speaker 19: in town this weekend. He was the part owner, half owner,
• 46:07
Speaker 19: or a the principal emeritus from Silling Associates. So he's
• 46:11
Speaker 19: with me this weekend. He's a football fan. He loves sports.
• 46:16
Speaker 19: But I brought Tom along with me just to introduce
• 46:18
Speaker 19: you because one of the reasons that we're where we
• 46:21
Speaker 19: are with our projects is because of Tom Potts.
• 46:24
  Speaker 2: But Mr.
• 46:25
Speaker 19: Jarrett, he said, I have these extra tickets. I'd like
• 46:28
Speaker 19: the fellowship home to benefit from them. So I've got
• 46:31
Speaker 19: two and two. My phone number is 304-549-8166. If you'd
• 46:38
Speaker 19: like to make a donation to a great cause to
• 46:41
Speaker 19: help men overcome addiction to opiate use disorder and alcoholism,
• 46:46
Speaker 19: then you can make a donation to me directly, and
• 46:49
Speaker 19: I'll give you tickets to the WU Cincinnati game.
• 46:53
Speaker 1: It's homecoming this weekend, too.
• 46:54
  Speaker 11: By the way.
• 46:54
Speaker 2: But don't call him right now because he's a little
• 46:56
Speaker 2: busy right now. Wait until like 10.01, and give us
• 46:59
Speaker 2: that number again. Area 304-549-8166. We'll try to hit that
• 47:07
Speaker 2: a couple times. We'll try to get you to get
• 47:08
Speaker 2: a word in here at some point.
• 47:10
Speaker 16: Well, it's hard to do that when Dick's talking. No,
• 47:13
Speaker 16: it's a great cause. Dick and I have been friends
• 47:15
Speaker 16: for 40 years, and I'm just glad to support the
• 47:18
Speaker 16: Kanawha Valley Fellowship Home. I was a partner in selling architects,
• 47:22
Speaker 16: and we helped Dick on the renovation of the fellowship home.
• 47:26
Speaker 2: Pull that microphone up a little bit there, if you would, sir.
• 47:28
  Speaker 2: There you go.
• 47:28
  Speaker 16: There you go.
• 47:28
Speaker 2: Can you hear me now? Yeah, you're good.
• 47:30
  Speaker 16: No, Dick's a long-term friend, and it's been my honor
• 47:34
Speaker 16: to help him with the Kanawha Valley Fellowship Home and
• 47:36
Speaker 16: doing the design work. And I appreciate Sillings' effort because,
• 47:40
Speaker 16: you know, they donate a lot of time and money
• 47:43
Speaker 16: as well. So, no, it's just good to be here
• 47:45
Speaker 16: and good to help Dick in that recovery process.
• 47:47
Speaker 2: And, Dick, you've been on the show several times, but
• 47:50
Speaker 2: for those who may not have heard you, explain the
• 47:51
Speaker 2: whole concept of the home.
• 47:53
Speaker 19: Well, the Kanawha Valley Fellowship Home is a men's sober
• 47:56
Speaker 19: living facility that facilitates not only sober living for men
• 48:00
Speaker 19: that are recovering from alcohol, drug, opiate use disorders is.
• 48:04
  Speaker 1: The new thing.
• 48:07
  Speaker 19: It's a six-month to three-year program. We have a phased
• 48:11
Speaker 19: program through phase one, two, and three. We purchased the
• 48:14
Speaker 19: building next door to our original mission house at 1121
• 48:16
Speaker 19: Virginia Street. So at 1123-25 Virginia Street, we're building 12
• 48:23
Speaker 19: additional affordable housing apartments upstairs. They were designed by Selling
• 48:28
Speaker 19: Associates and the contractor is Mr. Jarrett, John Jarrett Construction.
• 48:32
Speaker 19: And we're super excited.
• 48:33
  Speaker 1: We're getting ready.
• 48:34
Speaker 19: On Monday, we're going to start hammering nails. We're going
• 48:37
Speaker 19: to cut holes in the walls and do all kinds
• 48:39
  Speaker 19: of stuff.
• 48:39
Speaker 2: You're going to be making a lot of ruckus down
• 48:41
Speaker 2: the street from us. Making a lot of ruckus. And
• 48:42
Speaker 2: we need, I'll tell you what we need.
• 48:44
  Speaker 1: It's a $ 2. 3 million project.
• 48:45
  Speaker 19: We're $ 256, 172.
• 48:45
  Speaker 16: 44 short.
• 48:51
Speaker 19: To pay off the note that we owe the Polka
• 48:54
Speaker 19: Valley Bank, who's been a generous partner with us too,
• 48:57
Speaker 19: but we want to pay Polka Valley. When we're done
• 48:59
Speaker 19: with a project, we want to be debt-free so we
• 49:01
Speaker 19: can give the best opportunity to men recover and help
• 49:04
Speaker 19: our community. Families get better. Men get better. They go
• 49:09
Speaker 19: back to work. They pay taxes. And the community just,
• 49:13
Speaker 19: because of what we've done, because of a program that
• 49:15
Speaker 19: I inherited from some people uh many years ago that
• 49:19
Speaker 19: started in 1967 well and.
• 49:21
Speaker 2: A good and a good way to help paying off
• 49:25
Speaker 2: that uh would be to get these tickets i mean
• 49:30
  Speaker 2: if somebody wants to pay 256 172 74 i'm.
• 49:33
  Speaker 1: I'm all in.
• 49:34
Speaker 2: Or half of that. I'm good for the 43 cents
• 49:37
Speaker 2: if you need that. But this, and again, we're asking
• 49:41
Speaker 2: people at 10.01 this morning, we want you to light
• 49:44
Speaker 2: up Dick's phone over here. And highest offer wins, right?
• 49:49
  Speaker 1: Exactly.
• 49:49
Speaker 2: I mean, whoever's willing to pay the most for it,
• 49:51
Speaker 2: and the money's going to go right back. And these
• 49:52
Speaker 2: tickets are going for what now? How much are tickets?
• 49:55
Speaker 19: They're about $ 100 a piece if you were going to
• 49:57
Speaker 19: buy them from WU. But we want to get as
• 50:00
Speaker 19: much as we can. It's a donation, and you can
• 50:02
Speaker 19: go to the game, or you can give them to somebody.
• 50:05
Speaker 19: If you give somebody, a friend that needs to go
• 50:08
Speaker 19: to Morgantown that's never been to a ballgame, it's going
• 50:11
Speaker 19: to be beautiful football weather tomorrow.
• 50:12
Speaker 2: It's going to be about 50.
• 50:14
  Speaker 19: A balmy 45 or 50 degrees.
• 50:16
  Speaker 1: It's fall, man.
• 50:16
  Speaker 16: It's perfect.
• 50:17
Speaker 2: It's what it's supposed to be.
• 50:18
  Speaker 16: It's fall, yeah.
• 50:18

• 50:47
Speaker 2: don't have better company to hang out with here today.
• 50:51
Speaker 2: I'll suffer through it. In all seriousness, I mean, I've
• 50:53
Speaker 2: had you on several times, Mr. Jarrett, as well. This
• 50:56
Speaker 2: is a very, very worthwhile cause, and you have success
• 50:59
Speaker 2: story after success story of men that have turned their
• 51:02
  Speaker 2: lives around.
• 51:02
  Speaker 1: Absolutely.
• 51:03
Speaker 19: We had a man graduate that came out of prison.
• 51:05
Speaker 19: He just graduated from our From all three years of
• 51:08
Speaker 19: our program through phase three, he came with no job,
• 51:13
Speaker 19: no ID, no Social Security card, nothing. Now he has
• 51:17
Speaker 19: all that. He has a home. He has a truck.
• 51:18
Speaker 19: He has a girlfriend. That's what it's all about. And
• 51:22
Speaker 19: he's in recovery, and he's helping other people. So that's
• 51:25
  Speaker 19: what we do.
• 51:25
  Speaker 11: All right.
• 51:25
Speaker 2: Give us that phone number a couple more times. We
• 51:27
Speaker 2: want that thing to blow up at 1001. These are
• 51:31
Speaker 2: $ 100- a- piece tickets that you can make an offer on. Highest
• 51:34
Speaker 2: offer gets them, and you'll help the fellowship. Absolutely.
• 51:36
  Speaker 17: 304-549-8166.
• 51:36
  Speaker 1: Captain Dick.
• 51:40
