- 0:01Speaker 1: You're listening to a DM podcast.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Hey, dribblers.
- 0:04Speaker 3: So this is pretending because we're not really here where
- 0:07Speaker 3: we're having a little bit of a break at the moment.
- 0:09Speaker 3: But we have recorded a summer series that we're very
- 0:11Speaker 3: excited about.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Cocktail. Please, can you rub some oil on my back?
- 0:18Speaker 1: Get the bullboard to do that.
- 0:20Speaker 3: So those are all orders for me to go and fulfill.
- 0:22Speaker 3: By the way, so I should jump off this mic
- 0:23Speaker 3: and go and look after the women. But we've got
- 0:26Speaker 3: an amazing lineup of guests and each week we talk
- 0:28Speaker 3: to a different guest. We're very excited, people who you
- 0:31Speaker 3: will know from netball and they've come in and had
- 0:34Speaker 3: just some really fabulous fun chats with us.
- 0:36Speaker 2: So this is our summer series. We hope you enjoy it.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Enjoy guys, Happy summer.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Good bye, hello and welcome to the No Dribble Summer Series.
- 0:58Speaker 2: I am Carolyn Swindell.
- 0:59Speaker 3: I'm enjoyed studio as always by the fine and the fair.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Oh is that me or oh me capcocks wool and
- 1:06Speaker 3: up on the far North Coast.
- 1:08Speaker 4: I am neither fine fair laur in studio, So it's
- 1:10Speaker 4: lizellis yes.
- 1:11Speaker 3: And we again have a very very special guest today,
- 1:15Speaker 3: and Catherine has the gimp mask on, she is blindfolded.
- 1:18Speaker 3: She does not know who this is. So Catherine, let
- 1:21Speaker 3: us start the guesting process. And you know, come on,
- 1:24Speaker 3: you know it's taken you a while over recent weeks.
- 1:26Speaker 1: So star signs were never going to do it for me.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Oh okay, Well, our guest today is a Gemini.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Oh it's another one of me. Yeah, okay, which so
- 1:33Speaker 1: it's another split personality. God not guessing it on that
- 1:37Speaker 1: basis figuring. Okay, our guest today is one hundred and
- 1:40Speaker 1: seventy five centimeters tall mid quarter. No, our guests today
- 1:45Speaker 1: are played goal attack or goal shooter. Goal shooter at
- 1:49Speaker 1: one seventy five. This must be in the olden days.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Must be very threatening to you.
- 1:54Speaker 1: I guess hearing that.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Hey, but sometimes even the well that's tall to me.
- 1:58Speaker 3: But anyway, so our special guest debuted for Australia at
- 2:02Speaker 3: the age of eighteen.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Oh my god, this is completely thrown me. People don't
- 2:08Speaker 1: do that anymore, unless again, it was back in the
- 2:10Speaker 1: olden days.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Well, our special guest was born in the year that
- 2:13Speaker 3: I was in year ten, So yeah, we're talking about
- 2:16Speaker 3: the olden days now.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Nothing, absolutely not.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Our special guest has been a player, a coach, a
- 2:26Speaker 3: sports journalist, a broadcaster.
- 2:28Speaker 2: You name it. But they're only young, well young compared
- 2:33Speaker 2: to something.
- 2:33Speaker 1: This is a dude, it's a guy. Or you've thrown
- 2:37Speaker 1: me a curveball. That's very interesting.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Maybe maybe this is the first man we've had on
- 2:44Speaker 3: the Not Dribble podcast.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Oh god, he must be good if he's been allowed
- 2:47Speaker 1: on the show.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Maybe it is someone who's drink of choice would be
- 2:53Speaker 3: a glass.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Of Chiraz sophisticated. I think I know who this might be.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Let me tell you some more stuff before you make
- 3:01Speaker 3: your guess. Okay, graduate in communications and journalists on r
- 3:05Speaker 3: MIT and an international coach as well as the coach
- 3:08Speaker 3: of one of our very successful some super netball team
- 3:12Speaker 3: since twenty twenty one, having been on the coaching staff
- 3:16Speaker 3: of another son called super netball team before heading overseas.
- 3:20Speaker 1: I know, I know.
- 3:21Speaker 3: I do want to tell you that our special guest
- 3:24Speaker 3: was born in Little River because that's interesting.
- 3:26Speaker 2: From the Little River band, I would have thought, where
- 3:28Speaker 2: is Little River in Victoria? Oh?
- 3:30Speaker 1: Okay, now I know who it is. Who is it?
- 3:32Speaker 1: This particular player modeled their shot on the great Shiral
- 3:37Speaker 1: McMahon and he was the spit as a player.
- 3:39Speaker 2: It's Dan, right, it is Dan Ryan.
- 3:41Speaker 5: Well, Dan, thank you guys for having me. What an honor,
- 3:45Speaker 5: What an honor.
- 3:46Speaker 1: This is a big deal. You're the first boy that's
- 3:49Speaker 1: been allowed on the show, Dan Ryan, So.
- 3:51Speaker 5: Don't make it out, oh you'll be the last boy nipples.
- 3:54Speaker 5: All about inclusion, isn't it? World ie?
- 3:56Speaker 3: Guys, Well, Liza and I had to look at the
- 3:59Speaker 3: Constitution Dribble podcast to see that when we're actually allowed.
- 4:03Speaker 2: So, but your special dispensation.
- 4:06Speaker 1: How's stuff in the West going? Believe you've just had
- 4:08Speaker 1: a training session, You've got the majority of your players back.
- 4:12Speaker 1: How's preseason been?
- 4:13Speaker 5: Yeah, it's been good. It's been a bit of a
- 4:15Speaker 5: slow burn since November and just building the players back
- 4:19Speaker 5: into the program and taking it nice and easy this
- 4:21Speaker 5: side of Christmas and then you know, really looking forward
- 4:24Speaker 5: to what next year brings with a really similar squad.
- 4:26Speaker 5: So life is good over here in Wa, Dan.
- 4:28Speaker 1: How do you navigate the fact that you have internationals.
- 4:31Speaker 1: You've got Jamaicans, You've got players that were part of
- 4:33Speaker 1: the England series, You've obviously got the Aussie diamonds, players
- 4:36Speaker 1: that are away, they're all over the shop. So how
- 4:39Speaker 1: does that work then in when people come back to training,
- 4:42Speaker 1: because I'd imagine they've got to have some rest.
- 4:44Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely, and I think it's something we manage as
- 4:46Speaker 5: a club really well to make sure that when they
- 4:48Speaker 5: do come back into our environment they're good to go.
- 4:50Speaker 5: And you know a lot of the players will have
- 4:52Speaker 5: and you'll leave off the back of an international series
- 4:54Speaker 5: and that type of thing. And I think also how
- 4:56Speaker 5: we frame the pre season period. It's pretty light in
- 4:58Speaker 5: terms of cognitive load and team elements this side of Christmas,
- 5:02Speaker 5: and then when we get into January and probably more
- 5:04Speaker 5: so February, when the full team is back together, we
- 5:07Speaker 5: really start to sharpen the focus on Round one and
- 5:09Speaker 5: the season the head. So it's a bit of an
- 5:11Speaker 5: incremental type of process we use to get them focused
- 5:14Speaker 5: because it is really bloody tough to be on top
- 5:17Speaker 5: of your game and fully motivated for twelve months of
- 5:19Speaker 5: the year. So you've got to let people live and
- 5:21Speaker 5: have their escapes and you know that's all of us included,
- 5:23Speaker 5: and making sure that when we do front up together
- 5:26Speaker 5: where we're in a great space as a team.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Can you explain to me what you mean by a
- 5:29Speaker 2: lighter cognitive load. What does that look like for the players?
- 5:32Speaker 5: Yeah, I think probably you know, the easiest way to
- 5:34Speaker 5: describe it. We'll just be keeping things pretty simple in
- 5:36Speaker 5: the training environment and not giving them too much stuff
- 5:39Speaker 5: where they have to think and make decisions and that
- 5:42Speaker 5: type of stuff. It's really about just getting the skills back,
- 5:45Speaker 5: and I really try and focus on the first eight
- 5:47Speaker 5: weeks of the program being about the individual athletes. All
- 5:50Speaker 5: they're worried about is getting themselves right and working on
- 5:52Speaker 5: the little crafts of their game that they need to
- 5:54Speaker 5: and then when we come back as a team, say
- 5:56Speaker 5: January February, it becomes much more around the team and
- 5:59Speaker 5: what we want to do from a game plan perspective
- 6:02Speaker 5: and those types of things, because you know, you've got
- 6:04Speaker 5: to remember, whilst you're trying to coach a team, you've
- 6:06Speaker 5: got a lot of individuals in there that need lots
- 6:07Speaker 5: of different attention and areas to focus on as well.
- 6:10Speaker 5: So we try and tick all those boxes through pre season.
- 6:12Speaker 4: So Dan, you know, when you finish a season like
- 6:15Speaker 4: the last season and you don't you're there or thereabouts,
- 6:21Speaker 4: but you don't quite crack it through to the Grand Final.
- 6:24Speaker 4: But when you look back at the points you all
- 6:26Speaker 4: finished on like you the Vixens, your Thunderbelts, you're all
- 6:29Speaker 4: pretty even. Where do you see the improvements coming in
- 6:33Speaker 4: your team? Given that you've had the same team.
- 6:35Speaker 5: Now for a little while.
- 6:36Speaker 4: Where are the improvements?
- 6:37Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it's a great question, and I think
- 6:39Speaker 5: I probably got to the end of the season just
- 6:42Speaker 5: gone with a real level of contentment of how close
- 6:44Speaker 5: we got and how far we got with we had
- 6:47Speaker 5: six changes to a team of ten, which is massive,
- 6:49Speaker 5: and we had to redevelop relationships, rebuild a culture, create
- 6:53Speaker 5: a game plan that brought out the best in everybody.
- 6:55Speaker 5: And I think the fact that we got technically equal
- 6:58Speaker 5: first with the Victens and Thunderbirds on points, we were
- 7:01Speaker 5: one win away from winning the minor premiership, and we
- 7:04Speaker 5: were two goals away from finishing in the top two
- 7:07Speaker 5: at the end of the home and away season. So
- 7:08Speaker 5: it's incremental gains and really small margins. And I think
- 7:13Speaker 5: probably the biggest thing for me with this new group
- 7:15Speaker 5: was we were learning about each other every single week,
- 7:18Speaker 5: every single game. So I got to the end of
- 7:20Speaker 5: the preliminary final where perhaps in that third quarter when
- 7:23Speaker 5: the real pressure was on, and we struggled. We just
- 7:26Speaker 5: hadn't quite as a team developed the hardened maturity we
- 7:30Speaker 5: need to handle that real intense pressure to win a
- 7:33Speaker 5: competition like some court. But that was the moment where
- 7:36Speaker 5: you learn, so I think it then really sharpens your
- 7:39Speaker 5: focus in those key parts of your game plan, the
- 7:41Speaker 5: key developments of the individuals, but also the journey the
- 7:45Speaker 5: team went on to go, hey, we're actually good enough
- 7:47Speaker 5: to win this competition, but this is what we need
- 7:49Speaker 5: to shift to get there. So as disappointing as it was,
- 7:52Speaker 5: it just makes the road clear a little bit clearer.
- 7:55Speaker 4: I think, Dan, I feel like to win by the
- 7:59Speaker 4: time we get to final. Most teams are pretty even physically,
- 8:03Speaker 4: and you win or lose in some corps Super and
- 8:05Speaker 4: netboron the finals with what's above your shoulders, don't you absolutely?
- 8:08Speaker 5: I think if you look across the board, we're at
- 8:10Speaker 5: the best players in the world playing in our league.
- 8:12Speaker 5: Everyone is good at what they do. They're all very skillful,
- 8:14Speaker 5: they're all incredibly fit, incredibly talented. My biggest philosophy is
- 8:18Speaker 5: talent gets you so far. The best teams win, and
- 8:20Speaker 5: a lot of it. The best teams are the ones
- 8:22Speaker 5: that have the mental resolve and the aptitude to handle
- 8:24Speaker 5: any situation, any circumstance, that know how to step up
- 8:28Speaker 5: in the big moment, that know how to still find
- 8:30Speaker 5: a way to win when they're not playing their best
- 8:32Speaker 5: or they're being challenged, and some of those skills and
- 8:34Speaker 5: attributes mentally, I think take a lot longer to develop
- 8:37Speaker 5: over time than the physical skills of the game that
- 8:40Speaker 5: we all have. So we really pay a lot of
- 8:42Speaker 5: attention to the mental skills, and I think it's the
- 8:44Speaker 5: things that separates good teams from great teams, and you've
- 8:47Speaker 5: got to invest time and effort in building that and
- 8:49Speaker 5: also I think be really accountable around those areas mentally
- 8:52Speaker 5: that you all need to grow at from a coaching perspective,
- 8:54Speaker 5: from a playing perspective, and from a team cohesion perspective
- 8:58Speaker 5: as well. You know, this is a game of fine
- 8:59Speaker 5: mind and then sometimes the individual and team's mindset can
- 9:03Speaker 5: be the difference between winning the title and losing it.
- 9:05Speaker 1: My god, you must be pumped though, if you listening
- 9:08Speaker 1: to you talk about where you ended up this year
- 9:09Speaker 1: and how close you were to getting through to that final,
- 9:12Speaker 1: keeping in mind you had los Sasha Glasgow court you
- 9:15Speaker 1: Bruce in the preseason, but you've had no change to
- 9:19Speaker 1: this team really before you head into twenty twenty five,
- 9:22Speaker 1: So I mean, god, it's only got to be positive
- 9:24Speaker 1: things coming from the West.
- 9:26Speaker 5: Yeah. And look, the only change we make is Kelsey
- 9:28Speaker 5: transitions into a training partner and Ruth Ariane comes into
- 9:31Speaker 5: a contracted player. But all the players that make up
- 9:34Speaker 5: our squad have been in our environment over the past
- 9:36Speaker 5: twelve months, so they're really familiar. I think with the
- 9:38Speaker 5: journey we've been on, the language we're using, the theme
- 9:41Speaker 5: in which we're trying to embrace moving forward, and that's
- 9:45Speaker 5: really critical because you know, it takes a bit of
- 9:47Speaker 5: time after wholesale change to re establish yourself. And I
- 9:50Speaker 5: think there's nothing more important for a team than lived
- 9:53Speaker 5: experiences together. And this group have been through a really
- 9:56Speaker 5: enjoyable ride, should I say, over the past twelve months,
- 9:59Speaker 5: we've learned a lot, gained a lot, and hopefully we
- 10:02Speaker 5: can demonstrate all those learnings we've gathered along the way
- 10:04Speaker 5: with the really successful twenty twenty five.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Dan I coach an under eleven's team, So I'd like
- 10:08Speaker 3: to talk to you peer to peer as coaches. Now, Please,
- 10:13Speaker 3: how do you keep getting better? How do you keep
- 10:15Speaker 3: your game improving?
- 10:17Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm a real student of the game, so obviously
- 10:19Speaker 5: I love the art and craft of coaching as much
- 10:22Speaker 5: as I love the game of netball and what it
- 10:24Speaker 5: gives and brings. So the off season for me is
- 10:26Speaker 5: the time to step away from a netball court and
- 10:28Speaker 5: not deliver or coach or plan sessions. But really, I
- 10:32Speaker 5: guess refresh and recharge in different sporting environments. I'll read
- 10:35Speaker 5: a lot of books. I'll listen to a lot of podcasts.
- 10:38Speaker 5: I've got a real hunger for information from all different avenues.
- 10:41Speaker 5: And it's not just sport. I'll look at corporate. I'll
- 10:43Speaker 5: look at you know, the person that's overcome great adversity
- 10:46Speaker 5: to see the lights and the positivity and life circumstances
- 10:49Speaker 5: like that stuff really inspires me. So I think for me,
- 10:52Speaker 5: like I want to be the best possible coach I
- 10:54Speaker 5: can be. I'll drive my players to be the best
- 10:56Speaker 5: possible athletes they can be. And you know the expectation
- 10:59Speaker 5: I have as myself. If I expect them to get better,
- 11:01Speaker 5: they should expect me to get better as well. So
- 11:04Speaker 5: I want to be a better coach in twenty five
- 11:05Speaker 5: than what I was in twenty four, and I really
- 11:07Speaker 5: feel like I did some of my better coaching in
- 11:09Speaker 5: twenty twenty four with this new group. It was so
- 11:11Speaker 5: exciting to work with them that you know, they'll want
- 11:13Speaker 5: to see me grow and I want to see them grow.
- 11:15Speaker 5: So I think when you stop learning and stop growing
- 11:17Speaker 5: and coaching, it's the time to hang up the notebook
- 11:20Speaker 5: and move on to something else.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Listening to podcasts, well, you're welcome for all.
- 11:25Speaker 5: I do like so much knowledge here and so much expertise.
- 11:29Speaker 5: You know, this is exactly what I need.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, the grim talking about me full of all
- 11:33Speaker 1: that sort of stuff. Hey, we talk a lot throughout
- 11:36Speaker 1: the season about the challenges for a team that lives
- 11:39Speaker 1: in the West and in Perth. But do you also
- 11:42Speaker 1: secretly love the fact that you're removed. I mean, you
- 11:45Speaker 1: guys have a fortress at our ac arena, massive crowds,
- 11:49Speaker 1: super supportive. Do you kind of like that side of
- 11:52Speaker 1: it as well? A bit?
- 11:53Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely, I really think it's got its benefits. Obviously,
- 11:56Speaker 5: the travel element and you know, competitive balance and all
- 11:58Speaker 5: of that stuff always comes up in conversation, and the
- 12:01Speaker 5: flying is tough, but it certainly makes you pretty gritty
- 12:03Speaker 5: and pretty hard and to fight your way through a season,
- 12:06Speaker 5: which actually love. I love the challenge of it because
- 12:08Speaker 5: we've got no other options, so you just got to
- 12:10Speaker 5: embrace it. But I love the isolation over here in
- 12:13Speaker 5: the West. You can quietly go about your business and
- 12:15Speaker 5: no one really knows what you're up to or how
- 12:17Speaker 5: you're tracking. And I also feel like, you know, we
- 12:20Speaker 5: could go a preseason and not see other teams but
- 12:23Speaker 5: still be really well prepared with our men's team over here.
- 12:26Speaker 5: And you know, we're always been really ready for round
- 12:28Speaker 5: one because we've just quietly gone along in the background.
- 12:31Speaker 5: And I mean, you even look at this season, no
- 12:33Speaker 5: one gave us a chance of finishing anywhere near the
- 12:35Speaker 5: top four or being a threat, and you know, we
- 12:37Speaker 5: set the stand in the first seven rounds of the competition.
- 12:40Speaker 5: So just being able to stay in your own lane,
- 12:42Speaker 5: in your own bubble, I think has great benefits. And
- 12:45Speaker 5: the lifestyle. The players absolutely love it, and quite often
- 12:48Speaker 5: when we get players that relocate to Perth, they never
- 12:50Speaker 5: want to leave because the lifestyle is so good and
- 12:53Speaker 5: the program's obviously making them great netbullers. So we're taking
- 12:56Speaker 5: a lot of boxes like that, minus the long flying.
- 12:58Speaker 5: It's a pretty good place to be to be living
- 13:00Speaker 5: and working.
- 13:01Speaker 2: I went to a game this year. I was over
- 13:03Speaker 2: with my family on holiday as I went to the.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Giants match, and amazing walking from the city to the
- 13:08Speaker 3: stadium and there is everyone's in merch, everyone's in Fever merch,
- 13:12Speaker 3: Everyone's in New Fever merch. And it's like it's just
- 13:15Speaker 3: a flood of people, and that stadium is amazing and.
- 13:19Speaker 1: The flying pig, the flying peek is such a superb
- 13:23Speaker 1: yep yep.
- 13:23Speaker 3: There's also a giant bit of rock or mineral walking
- 13:26Speaker 3: around in a hard hats gold golden.
- 13:31Speaker 5: I think perhaps, yeah, it's pretty awesome, isn't it. I
- 13:34Speaker 5: think like our team behind the scenes, this was their
- 13:37Speaker 5: vision for a long long time. To the sea of Green,
- 13:40Speaker 5: the Green Army at rac Arena, and genuinely when you
- 13:42Speaker 5: walk out on court it we make sure we all
- 13:44Speaker 5: take a moment to look around and soak it in
- 13:46Speaker 5: because it's not every day you get to play in
- 13:48Speaker 5: front of thirteen thousand fans in a home and away
- 13:50Speaker 5: domestic network competition and the game day experience is like
- 13:54Speaker 5: no other. It is the best network court in Australia,
- 13:57Speaker 5: so we're very lucky and we try and win as
- 13:59Speaker 5: many blood netball match on that quarter as possible because
- 14:01Speaker 5: of it.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Yeah, and you're bloody do too. Hey, can you talk
- 14:04Speaker 1: to us about you playing netball because you see men's
- 14:07Speaker 1: netball given so much more of a platform now and
- 14:10Speaker 1: you're part of the commentary for the Kelpies Netblack series
- 14:13Speaker 1: just recently and it got it's good to hear you
- 14:15Speaker 1: on the mic. You're so bloody good at it. But
- 14:17Speaker 1: back when you were playing, it wasn't as prevalent. So
- 14:20Speaker 1: how did that all come about?
- 14:22Speaker 5: Yeah? I think it's been like a long, long journey
- 14:25Speaker 5: men's netball and as we know, it started in the
- 14:27Speaker 5: eighties and you know whether it was national championships and
- 14:29Speaker 5: then the Australian men's team. I think the first ever
- 14:31Speaker 5: team was in the mid nineteen eighties. And I started
- 14:34Speaker 5: in the year two thys and fifteen year old and
- 14:37Speaker 5: I knew from the age of eight that my dream
- 14:39Speaker 5: was to play netball for Australia. And I had no
- 14:41Speaker 5: idea that there was an Australian men's netball team until
- 14:44Speaker 5: I read a netball magazine and there was a profile
- 14:46Speaker 5: on Chris Carroll who happened to be the captain of
- 14:48Speaker 5: the Australian men's team and his mum Betty played for
- 14:50Speaker 5: Australia back in the day. And as soon as I
- 14:53Speaker 5: saw that, I'm like, well, if Chris is the captain,
- 14:55Speaker 5: I'm going to be the next captain one day. And
- 14:56Speaker 5: that kind of started my journey and my dreaming. And
- 14:59Speaker 5: I look at where the men's game is now and
- 15:02Speaker 5: the profile and the opportunity that the boys are getting,
- 15:05Speaker 5: and how awesome Netball Australia are doing it embracing the
- 15:09Speaker 5: full diversity of our great sport. And I've always been
- 15:12Speaker 5: a massive believer that netball should be setting its target
- 15:15Speaker 5: as being the number one sport for everybody, not just
- 15:18Speaker 5: for women and girls. And I've loved that it's been
- 15:20Speaker 5: a really special place for women and girls, but I've
- 15:23Speaker 5: still felt really connected and belonged to it my entire life.
- 15:27Speaker 5: But now I just feel like the sport itself has
- 15:29Speaker 5: gone next level where everyone has a place, everyone has
- 15:32Speaker 5: an opportunity to contribute. And what's really exciting, I think
- 15:35Speaker 5: is we're all equally as passionate and these boys that
- 15:38Speaker 5: are playing or men, should I say that they're playing
- 15:40Speaker 5: for the kelpies at the moment, rest assured that they're
- 15:42Speaker 5: sporting heroes other diamonds. They are getting to live and
- 15:46Speaker 5: breathe that experience with them and traveling with them is
- 15:48Speaker 5: something I think that they all dreamed about as kids
- 15:50Speaker 5: and a lot of pinched me moments, which you know,
- 15:53Speaker 5: it's certainly heartwarming to see where the game is and
- 15:55Speaker 5: I love that our sport is now just fully tapping
- 15:58Speaker 5: into that market and showcasing I think, a different version
- 16:00Speaker 5: of netball, which which is great to see.
- 16:02Speaker 1: I interviewed Leam Forkadilla recently and he said that he
- 16:06Speaker 1: would always look up to the diamonds, and the diamonds were,
- 16:09Speaker 1: you know, where he wanted to end up one day.
- 16:11Speaker 1: He wanted to be as good as that, and I
- 16:12Speaker 1: just thought that's so cool. It is so cool to
- 16:15Speaker 1: hear that.
- 16:15Speaker 5: It's a sport too where like the men involved in
- 16:18Speaker 5: it are really driven to lift the women in it,
- 16:21Speaker 5: and it's it's quite often the other way around, where
- 16:23Speaker 5: the men's codes are lifting the women's codes, and it's
- 16:26Speaker 5: great that we have that platform to support it. And
- 16:29Speaker 5: you know, as I said before, the passion we all
- 16:31Speaker 5: share for the game is the most important element and
- 16:33Speaker 5: if we can all make great contributions to it, our
- 16:35Speaker 5: sport is better off. So it's really exciting.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Time here, Dan, Ryan, I'm just going to go out
- 16:41Speaker 3: on a limb here, Dan, do you drink a bit
- 16:42Speaker 3: of coffee?
- 16:43Speaker 2: Seem like a fairly high energy guy.
- 16:48Speaker 5: You're getting the passionate side of my personality. I love it. It'sful.
- 16:52Speaker 3: How nice to be at this stage of your career too,
- 16:55Speaker 3: and having played the game at the highest level and
- 16:57Speaker 3: not have a brain injury that's going to send you
- 16:59Speaker 3: to your graver earl, which is nice.
- 17:01Speaker 5: Very thankful for that, very thankful for that.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:03Speaker 3: I mean, I think as the mother of a son,
- 17:05Speaker 3: it's like, you know, I look at him playing rugby
- 17:08Speaker 3: and he loves it, but it's like, I don't know
- 17:10Speaker 3: that I love it for him.
- 17:11Speaker 4: No, And I reckon netbule like we could probably shout
- 17:13Speaker 4: that from the rooftops a little bit more, couldn't we.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Absolutely?
- 17:17Speaker 4: Yeah, And I suspect there'll be a lot of mums
- 17:19Speaker 4: out there going I'd like my son to play netball
- 17:22Speaker 4: and protect his brain a little bit better.
- 17:24Speaker 2: And also did just have one drop off for sport
- 17:26Speaker 2: on a Saturday morning? Really good?
- 17:29Speaker 4: That would be perfect.
- 17:30Speaker 5: Damn. What was it like as a little.
- 17:31Speaker 4: Boy, Like you say, you're an eight year old and
- 17:33Speaker 4: you knew you wanted to play netball? Was that because
- 17:35Speaker 4: your mum she was massively into it, wasn't it like
- 17:37Speaker 4: did you? And so what was that like then when
- 17:39Speaker 4: you couldn't see a pass?
- 17:40Speaker 5: Yeah? I think like mum played a lot when she
- 17:43Speaker 5: was younger, and I remember mum and my first memory
- 17:47Speaker 5: of netball was sitting in nineteen ninety one on the
- 17:50Speaker 5: couch with mum when she got home from work. She
- 17:52Speaker 5: was a nurse. She taped the nineteen ninety one World
- 17:55Speaker 5: Championship Final as a first game of netball. We sat
- 17:57Speaker 5: down together and watched and Mum is a fanatical supporter
- 18:01Speaker 5: of netball in the way like just she cheers the
- 18:03Speaker 5: goal for goal. She absolutely loved it, and she then
- 18:05Speaker 5: took me to a netball game in nineteen ninety three,
- 18:08Speaker 5: I think it was Australia in Jamaica. It was the
- 18:09Speaker 5: first time I watched a live game of netball, the
- 18:11Speaker 5: best of the best at the Glasshouse in Melbourne. And
- 18:15Speaker 5: from there I just started playing as an eight year
- 18:16Speaker 5: old kid and loved it like I lived and breathed it.
- 18:19Speaker 5: I knew all the players, I knew all the names,
- 18:21Speaker 5: I knew the coaches. I'd be out in the backyard
- 18:24Speaker 5: throwing the ball to myself as if I was Steve
- 18:26Speaker 5: Rahbooden and sergeant commentating the games. I just knew what
- 18:30Speaker 5: I wanted to do. And lucky we lived on ten
- 18:32Speaker 5: acres so the neighbors weren't too close by. But I
- 18:35Speaker 5: got three brothers and all of us played at some
- 18:37Speaker 5: point in time. But obviously when you turn twelve, you
- 18:40Speaker 5: can't keep playing with the girls. But my netble association
- 18:43Speaker 5: Coreer Netble Association in Gelong knew how much I loved it,
- 18:46Speaker 5: and they created the first ever mixed competition, that is
- 18:49Speaker 5: it playing best and so we had three teams in
- 18:51Speaker 5: the competition. But it just gave me an avenue for
- 18:53Speaker 5: a weekly game of netball. And then I toughed that
- 18:55Speaker 5: out for a couple of years and then was lucky
- 18:57Speaker 5: enough to get into the Victorian system when I was fourteen.
- 18:59Speaker 5: So lifelong passion that has never wavered. So and I've
- 19:03Speaker 5: never found it as a boy with all the girls
- 19:05Speaker 5: or the only boy in the team. I never saw
- 19:07Speaker 5: it as different. I never saw it as hard. I
- 19:09Speaker 5: never saw it as something that I shouldn't be doing
- 19:11Speaker 5: because it wasn't normal. I just loved it, and if
- 19:15Speaker 5: you love what you do, it doesn't matter what other
- 19:16Speaker 5: people think. So there was always a mottol I took
- 19:19Speaker 5: through in those years where perhaps people had certain opinions
- 19:22Speaker 5: about boys playing netball. But it's so cool that I
- 19:24Speaker 5: can turn my passion into a career that sent me
- 19:27Speaker 5: all over the world that you know, I dreamed of
- 19:29Speaker 5: living one day. So yeah, it's pretty specially amazing. Yeah,
- 19:32Speaker 5: her name is Helen, Helen Ryan go Helen. What a legend.
- 19:35Speaker 3: And I love that you're describing her a fan of
- 19:37Speaker 3: the game, you know, cheering the goal, cheering the achievement.
- 19:39Speaker 5: Whoever did it?
- 19:40Speaker 2: I think that's wonderful.
- 19:41Speaker 3: Liz, were you playing in that game, that first one
- 19:43Speaker 3: in ninety three in the Glasshouse. I'm trying to do
- 19:45Speaker 3: my maths.
- 19:46Speaker 4: Oh yeah, well I made my taboo for the Diamonds
- 19:48Speaker 4: in ninety three, So.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Wow, it was your favorite before Charrelle, then Dan.
- 19:56Speaker 5: It was Vicky Wilson, So she was the first one
- 19:58Speaker 5: that I saw, and I love that she just turned
- 20:00Speaker 5: and shot from everywhere and I'd get out in the
- 20:02Speaker 5: backyard and mimic her shooting style. And I actually got
- 20:05Speaker 5: to meet her once as a kid and she signed
- 20:07Speaker 5: my netball and I was besoded, absolutely loved it. And
- 20:11Speaker 5: then our old nature my man come onto the scene.
- 20:13Speaker 5: I'm like, you are the greatest thing ever invented. I
- 20:15Speaker 5: just adored her, so yeah, she was the hero.
- 20:18Speaker 1: Still do did you see Liza's social media recently? I
- 20:21Speaker 1: did respect.
- 20:26Speaker 4: Well, if there was a Dan Ryan statue.
- 20:28Speaker 5: To please please Doe, I'm.
- 20:31Speaker 4: Gonna say though, like, you know, I hated that you
- 20:33Speaker 4: moderitor game on Sharrell because I'd play against Charrell at
- 20:36Speaker 4: club and then we get into the Diamonds environment. I'm like, oh,
- 20:39Speaker 4: thank god, I don't have to play against her anymore.
- 20:41Speaker 4: And the coach you go, I'll we're playing the Victorian
- 20:43Speaker 4: men's team, and I'm like, yeah.
- 20:47Speaker 1: The same.
- 20:48Speaker 5: Yeah, yes, that was annoying.
- 20:50Speaker 4: But then you know, Dan, you worked for Channel ten
- 20:53Speaker 4: when I did, and I just the thing I love
- 20:55Speaker 4: about you is that when Dave Barhum said to you,
- 20:58Speaker 4: who was the head of sport there coming out to
- 21:00Speaker 4: the cople of games, right, you're going to commentate and
- 21:03Speaker 4: you would have just been hoping netball and he said gymnastics.
- 21:08Speaker 5: Yeah, you just wait.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Yeah, and you did it.
- 21:10Speaker 4: And that is just how you do things, isn't it.
- 21:13Speaker 5: Yeah, it is. I think I'm a take an opportunity
- 21:16Speaker 5: and go with it. And it's really interesting. I often
- 21:19Speaker 5: think about Dave Burram and the opportunities that he provided
- 21:21Speaker 5: because I feel like, no matter where you get in
- 21:23Speaker 5: whatever career you choose, there's always somebody that's opened the
- 21:26Speaker 5: door for he would give you a chance. And I
- 21:28Speaker 5: remember when Channel ten got the rights to the A
- 21:31Speaker 5: and Z Championship at the time, the netball and at
- 21:34Speaker 5: that time I was desperate to get into broadcasting and
- 21:37Speaker 5: pursue the dream of being a sports commentator. And I
- 21:39Speaker 5: found his email address. I dropped him in an email,
- 21:41Speaker 5: said this is who I am, this is what I
- 21:42Speaker 5: want to do. And the next day he got back
- 21:44Speaker 5: to me and said let's catch up for a coffee.
- 21:46Speaker 5: The next day he offered me a job. And then
- 21:48Speaker 5: through those opportunities, he took a bit of a shining
- 21:51Speaker 5: to my passion, I think, and I worked pretty hard
- 21:54Speaker 5: and he goes, you know, Commonwealth Games are coming up,
- 21:56Speaker 5: what do you think, And I said, well, I actually
- 21:58Speaker 5: used to do gymnastics, I kind of know, and he goes,
- 22:00Speaker 5: all right, you're commentating gymnastics before that. Again he made
- 22:03Speaker 5: me trial for it though, like can you actually do this?
- 22:05Speaker 5: But just things like that, you need good people in
- 22:07Speaker 5: your corner that are willing to back you in and
- 22:10Speaker 5: then when the opportunity comes, you just make the most
- 22:12Speaker 5: of it. And I never would have thought in my
- 22:13Speaker 5: wildest day as I'd be commentating the pommel horse in
- 22:15Speaker 5: India had a comord.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Games Well, it made a whole lot more sense than
- 22:19Speaker 3: the former Australian cricket captain commentating diving at the Olympics
- 22:23Speaker 3: this year a whole.
- 22:25Speaker 2: It didn't do a bad.
- 22:26Speaker 3: Job, but it's like job is that Mark Taylor's voice, Dan,
- 22:29Speaker 3: I've got a question for you, and I should tell
- 22:31Speaker 3: you we haven't met yet in person. I'm one hundred
- 22:33Speaker 3: and fifty nine centimeters, so I don't think being tall
- 22:36Speaker 3: is the be all and end all in life. But
- 22:38Speaker 3: kath mentioned earlier on when I said you're one hundred
- 22:40Speaker 3: and seventy five centimeters, she said, must be a mid
- 22:42Speaker 3: quarter and you were a goal attack and a shootout?
- 22:45Speaker 2: Was that short for those positions?
- 22:47Speaker 1: Okay?
- 22:48Speaker 5: Yeah, tiny? I think and obviously the men's game you
- 22:51Speaker 5: would have seen on the Kelpies New Zealand, like they're
- 22:53Speaker 5: massive guys and they can jump above the goal ring
- 22:57Speaker 5: and you know, deflect the ball before it goes through
- 22:59Speaker 5: the hoop. So you just have to learn different ways
- 23:01Speaker 5: to play the game. And for me, you know, I
- 23:03Speaker 5: was quick, I had great agility, I read the game
- 23:06Speaker 5: well and I had to develop this shot that basically
- 23:08Speaker 5: hit the roof of the stadium before it dropped in
- 23:10Speaker 5: so I could score some goals. But it just makes
- 23:13Speaker 5: you think differently, and you know, I try and encourage
- 23:14Speaker 5: that in the girls too, like so so we're so
- 23:17Speaker 5: quick to say no, she's too short, she can't do this.
- 23:20Speaker 5: But look at the Georgie Horgises, look at the Denise
- 23:23Speaker 5: Beckfeld's that knee hider grasshoppers, but still use their weapons
- 23:27Speaker 5: to make things really challenging for their opposition.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Do you know the thinking person's game, I don't think
- 23:33Speaker 1: is around as much as you were typically one of
- 23:36Speaker 1: the greatest that would use your head. But I feel
- 23:38Speaker 1: like Nepbul, because it's so fast, is a lot of
- 23:41Speaker 1: it is reactive. There's not a whole heap of players
- 23:43Speaker 1: that still really think about what they're doing. But you're
- 23:46Speaker 1: so right, because the shorter ones like you're Georgie Horgis's
- 23:49Speaker 1: real playmakers and really think about what they're doing on
- 23:52Speaker 1: the court. So did you find that to be one
- 23:55Speaker 1: of your real strengths early or is that something you
- 23:57Speaker 1: had to work on.
- 23:58Speaker 5: I think I developed it over time. I think initially
- 24:01Speaker 5: when I first started, like my physical attributes would often
- 24:06Speaker 5: get me to a point of being quite dominant in
- 24:08Speaker 5: the game. But eventually then teams start setting up strategies
- 24:11Speaker 5: where they take away some of your strengths. You then
- 24:12Speaker 5: have to really think about what you're doing, and I
- 24:15Speaker 5: love that. And I think I started coaching at the
- 24:17Speaker 5: age of fifteen, so I started to see the game
- 24:19Speaker 5: not just from my perspective but from the perspective of
- 24:21Speaker 5: people around me on the court really differently from an
- 24:25Speaker 5: early age, so I could kind of just naturally develop
- 24:27Speaker 5: this kind of playmaker or thinking a couple of moves
- 24:31Speaker 5: or passes ahead, and really enjoyed that style of play.
- 24:34Speaker 5: So I probably went from being super dominant individually to
- 24:37Speaker 5: being a little bit more of the craftsmen around players
- 24:40Speaker 5: and setting things up for others, which I've got a
- 24:42Speaker 5: great thrill out of so I think it's just something
- 24:45Speaker 5: that comes naturally. But on your point around those thinking
- 24:48Speaker 5: and playmaking players, they're few and far between in our
- 24:51Speaker 5: game at the moment, but when you have them, you
- 24:53Speaker 5: can really see the impact of them.
- 24:55Speaker 3: So it's who would you point out as being particularly
- 24:58Speaker 3: good in that regard at the moment.
- 25:00Speaker 5: Well, I think definitely Georgie Horges from The Thunderbirds is
- 25:03Speaker 5: very good at it. I see Alice t Neil in
- 25:05Speaker 5: my environment as that type of player. She sees the
- 25:07Speaker 5: game really well. And they're probably the two that stick
- 25:10Speaker 5: out mostly for me, and quite often you see them
- 25:12Speaker 5: as attacking players a little bit more than defenders. But
- 25:16Speaker 5: the defenders you're probably looking at the ones that are
- 25:17Speaker 5: a little bit more cunning, that can set things up
- 25:20Speaker 5: and that type of thing. So yeah, it's a little
- 25:22Speaker 5: bit of a lost art, the thinking, crafting, playmaking player,
- 25:25Speaker 5: but when you have it, it's certainly a massive weapon
- 25:28Speaker 5: in your team, something that you certainly look for when
- 25:29Speaker 5: you're recruiting.
- 25:30Speaker 2: And how would you develop that as a coach.
- 25:33Speaker 5: I think you've got to firstly empower them to know
- 25:36Speaker 5: that they're capable of doing it. I think that's probably
- 25:38Speaker 5: the first thing. And setting up players where they have
- 25:41Speaker 5: the ownership and autonomy to call things themselves and own
- 25:45Speaker 5: things out on that court, and a lot of it
- 25:47Speaker 5: will be self determined in terms of them being thinking players.
- 25:51Speaker 5: I think fran Williams for us, is probably the most
- 25:54Speaker 5: astute defensive player I've ever experienced in netball. She's amazing
- 25:59Speaker 5: in the way she sees the game and reads the
- 26:00Speaker 5: plane can articulate it most importantly. But a lot of
- 26:04Speaker 5: it will be self driven by the individual. It'll be
- 26:06Speaker 5: a skill set that naturally flourishes when when it's embraced.
- 26:09Speaker 1: It's also a skill set that you can tell very
- 26:11Speaker 1: early on some people just do not.
- 26:13Speaker 5: Have and those players are very challenging.
- 26:20Speaker 3: Okay, everyone who's been here for the summer series has
- 26:26Speaker 3: has been into Coxies hot box and it's a.
- 26:29Speaker 1: It's creepy because we've now got a boy jumping in
- 26:31Speaker 1: my hot box.
- 26:32Speaker 5: Do I need sunream? I feel like I need sun cream.
- 26:36Speaker 3: You'll do well, so strap in.
- 26:44Speaker 1: Not to be confused with anyway.
- 26:49Speaker 5: Unbelieva.
- 26:52Speaker 1: Oh good lord, I'm crying. Okay, So it's sixty seconds,
- 26:56Speaker 1: that's not really it's just quick fire. If we like.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Sixty seconds, but none of us have watch or.
- 27:03Speaker 1: For Coxes hot box.
- 27:05Speaker 5: Still, let's hit it. Okay, coffee, order a large flat
- 27:09Speaker 5: white extra shot.
- 27:10Speaker 2: And keep them coming right please.
- 27:12Speaker 1: Summer or winter?
- 27:14Speaker 5: Summer your breakfast, go to just coffee?
- 27:19Speaker 1: Really, when do you eat first for the day?
- 27:22Speaker 5: Lunchtime?
- 27:23Speaker 1: Oh my god, in the morning.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Is this an intermittent fasting thing?
- 27:28Speaker 5: Absolutely not. I just like to start the day with
- 27:30Speaker 5: a liquid diet and then we move on to something
- 27:31Speaker 5: substantial for lunch and then probably bringe all night at dinner.
- 27:33Speaker 5: That's how we balance it out.
- 27:36Speaker 4: Ja and I great believe is in liquid dinner. But anyway,
- 27:38Speaker 4: that's another story.
- 27:40Speaker 3: Bloody Mary for breakfast, but that's maybe not so good
- 27:43Speaker 3: on a webdak.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Funniest person in your team.
- 27:47Speaker 5: Janelle Fowler Nambard absolute hoot.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Never would have picked that, very funny. Wow. Okay, tomato
- 27:53Speaker 1: sauce in the fridge or the cupboard in the cupboard
- 27:56Speaker 1: your favorite seal? That's not netball?
- 27:58Speaker 5: Uh think that's Olympics. Obsessed with the Olympic Games.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Favorite holiday destination.
- 28:05Speaker 5: I can't go past Barley too familiar, too easy.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Plane activity. Now you guys are on a plane, a lot.
- 28:11Speaker 1: What do you do?
- 28:12Speaker 5: Oh my goodness, I can sit and play Tetris for
- 28:15Speaker 5: six hours straight.
- 28:16Speaker 1: On what what do you play tetress on these days.
- 28:18Speaker 5: On the phone? Oh? Do you It's the best? Feel
- 28:22Speaker 5: so good?
- 28:22Speaker 1: Is it an art? Need to get onto the Do
- 28:25Speaker 1: you not know what Tetris? Where do you find it?
- 28:28Speaker 3: I just okay, just sidebar on that I read the
- 28:32Speaker 3: other day. There is something about Tetris being used for
- 28:34Speaker 3: people who have had an enormous sort of traumatic shock
- 28:37Speaker 3: or something that they say it is really helpful in
- 28:39Speaker 3: not allowing that trauma to imprint on the brain. So
- 28:42Speaker 3: getting people to play Tetris because it's so immersive. Yeah,
- 28:46Speaker 3: so if someone suffered a massive bereavement or something.
- 28:49Speaker 1: And Dan does that when the does on the plane
- 28:54Speaker 1: on the way. What are you binging right now?
- 28:58Speaker 5: I am binging? Oh good question. Disney plus Aaron Hernandez story.
- 29:04Speaker 1: Oh writing all this down? Ye?
- 29:06Speaker 5: I love true crime. True crime is my passion. I
