- October 24 The Righteous Will Live by Faith Topic: Faith. Scripture: Habakkuk 2:4 4 Behold, his soul is puffed up. It is not upright in him, but the righteous will live by his faith. Context Habakkuk is waiting for God’s answer while violent Babylon rises. The proud person is contrasted with the righteous person whose life is marked by faithful trust while waiting for God’s promised justice. Let It Shape Your Life Faith is easiest to describe when the ending is already known. Habakkuk is living before the resolution. He sees violence, injustice, and a future that does not make sense. God’s answer does not remove the need to wait. Instead, the righteous person is told to live by faith. In this setting, faith is not positive thinking. It is durable trust that keeps a person oriented toward God when circumstances have not yet become encouraging. Pride says, “I can secure myself.” Faith says, “I will remain faithful even while I cannot control the timeline.” This verse later becomes important in the New Testament’s teaching about faith, but its original setting gives it texture: trust lives in the middle, not only at the happy ending. You do not have to understand every development to choose the next faithful step.
