- 0:05This is Kevin Sports for Daily here on one of five point nine Academy of
- 0:08m bringing you the folks on a hive sports show. On today's show we
- 0:18have reports on folks and in Victor, Hive Town, hawkinsch Town, Folks
- 0:23at Rugby Club, folks are Optimus Hockey Club, wheelchair basketball, rowing and
- 0:30running. Also on the show would be joined in the first hour by Karen
- 0:39Quinn from the South Kent Harriers, who'd be telling us all about her account
- 0:43to five k beginner's ten week course and how it went as it finished last
- 0:47Saturday when the all the runners went up the park run on the leaves.
- 0:56In the second hour, I shall be joined by Adrianne Rowe, who is
- 0:59the coach for the Folks the Optimist Boys on the fourteen side ahead of their
- 1:03semi final match at home against Winchester in a national competition. So make yourself
- 1:17comfortable, get the two and the scones out, stay where you are for
- 1:21two hours of local sport and classic tracks as we start the show with a
- 1:26bit of music from the Police and then we'll have some other local music.
- 1:32Academy the Folkston and hythe Squads podcast Every local sport across the district yes dayDay
- 1:48local music there from Coco and the Butterfields and a song called Autumn. That's
- 1:52funny. My my granddaughter's name is Autumn. And I will say this,
- 1:57but there will be an autumn another Autumn. That well, we'll be mentioning
- 2:00later on in the show. In the meantime, we're joined now by South
- 2:04Kent Harry a coach Karen Quinn. Hello, Karen, how are you very
- 2:07well? Thank you? Thanks for having me. Yeah, excellent, now
- 2:08thanks for coming in now, Karen, welcome to the show and tell us
- 2:13a bit about yourself and how you got into running. Was you're running background?
- 2:16And I mean you're a coach now, how did you get into coaching?
- 2:20Well? I wasn't a particularly active youngster. I did a tiny bit
- 2:24of running at school, but I fell into running by mistake really about ten
- 2:29years ago. I had young children and a friend of mine who we did
- 2:32the Score run together every day, suggested one day that she wanted to go
- 2:37running, and that it would be easier if she had somebody to tag along
- 2:42and we could keep each other going. I just took to it instantly.
- 2:46Within about ten weeks, I was thinking about how I could train for a
- 2:50ten k that very quickly led onto a ten miler, then a half marathon,
- 2:54and then a marathon. It all came very quickly. Really really,
- 2:57that's good for you, then't Yeah, that transition from sort of zero to
- 3:01marathon. How long was that you? Probably a year to eighteen months,
- 3:06I would say, yeah. Yeah. However, following that came the classics,
- 3:10two or three years of cycles of injury. I see, because I
- 3:15had done what a lot of us often do is get the bug and we
- 3:19just go too much too soon. Yeah yeah, yeah, but it's hard
- 3:22to it's hard to hold your reins in if you're enthusiastic, isn't it absolutely?
- 3:25And it's hard to know where that level is when you're starting out.
- 3:29Yeah yeah. I mean runners are probably their own worst enemy. You know,
- 3:34they get an injury, they go training, they know it's niggling,
- 3:37but they still going for a race, doesn't they because that's what the training
- 3:39plan says? Yeah? Yeah, yeah, right, Okay, so you
- 3:44got up. What was your first marathon? Then? Brighton? So my
- 3:46first marathon was the Brighton Marathon, and to this day, I think I
- 3:52would still describe it as my favorite marathon. Yeah, I absolutely loved it.
- 3:55I've run it, I've supported at Brighton, I've worked at the Brighton
- 3:59Marathon, and I would recommend anybody to give it a shot. Right.
- 4:02So, how many a marathons have you done? All? In all?
- 4:04The eleven? Ten eleven? I think some have been what you would describe
- 4:12as a race where I've trained consistently and been very focused on a finished time.
- 4:18Others have been done as much more social, fun and yeah, enjoyable.
- 4:28Yeah, okay, now I can remember seeing you at beachy Head,
- 4:31right, so that is more? Was that more than an a marathon that
- 4:34day? No? No, no, no, it wasn't one of the
- 4:36ultras. No, no, that was the marathon. Yeah, so I'm
- 4:40a regular at beachy Head Marathon. The first year I entered it, I
- 4:45was very very anxious about the elevation. Let's be real, ken, it's
- 4:48the elevation. The distance we've mastered. The elevation of beachy Head is something
- 4:53completely different. And I picked up an injury. So I managed to transfer
- 4:58down from the twenty six down to the ten kops from which they held,
- 5:01and I thought this will be a nice introduction because I can test it out
- 5:05and decide if I'm gutted that I couldn't do it, or whether or not
- 5:10I dodged a bullet. And I've been back every year since to do the
- 5:14twenty six milevee twenty six. Yeah, I've done the ten k. I've
- 5:17done it twice and well both times. Really the incentive was to run for
- 5:23a charity and I was getting on at the latter stages of my running career
- 5:28and then COVID came along and I couldn't do it anymore. And through COVID,
- 5:32I kind of, I don't know, I fell out of running,
- 5:35but it kind of caught up with me, you know. I was probably,
- 5:40like a lot of runners, bit inactive and the injuries were a bit
- 5:44telling. But the two beachy Head experiences really really stick with me, you
- 5:48know. And it was a fantastic though fantastic course. But the start runners,
- 5:55if ever you've done the start, you go straight up that he'll,
- 5:58don't you, Karen? Well, the first year I went to do it,
- 6:01I arrived the day before and like you say, the start is iconic.
- 6:04There's a photograph that anyone who's entering is presented with straight away. So
- 6:09I arrived the night before and thought I need to just have a little jog
- 6:12upt the start, see if I'm going to manage it. Had a nice
- 6:15gentle trot up to the top, So yeah, I'm definitely going to run
- 6:17it tomorrow, definitely. Off I went when the gun went, and I
- 6:21realized very quickly what I thought was the top was I'd barely even begun.
- 6:26I know, there's a little flat spelt and there were you just turned right
- 6:28into the trees, and I thought, oh, this is it. I've
- 6:30cracked it. Absolutely yeah. I mean as you come running towards the edge
- 6:38of the and you see the old lighthouse there, and if you get a
- 6:42brilliant day up there, they're lucky down there. I know some of the
- 6:46clubs down there on my Facebook page. They're always running across the downs.
- 6:49It's beautiful. It is very, very beautiful. So how did you get
- 6:53into South Ken? Harry is in? I a bit like you, having
- 6:56been running a long time. Once the routine goes, COVID came. My
- 7:00routine and consistency of running had taken a bit of a battering. The winter
- 7:04nights were starting to draw in and I was just noticing I wasn't getting my
- 7:09weekly mileage in the way I used to. I didn't seem to have the
- 7:12drive to get out the door as much as I used to, So I
- 7:15thought, do you know, I'm just going to give it a go.
- 7:17I'd never been convinced clubs were for me, but I'm just going to sign
- 7:21up. I'm going to turn up for six weeks and if it's not for
- 7:26me, at least i've tried. Yeah. Yeah, I've never looked back.
- 7:29They are such a great, great bunch. Yeah yeah, okay,
- 7:31excellent. And did you when you first went there, did anybody sort of
- 7:35take you under their wing and say, well, lot, come out with
- 7:38me. You know? So it's very so within the club itself there are
- 7:42three separate groups that that train, but even separately to the club groups,
- 7:47little friendships and subgroups are then formed based on who's training for what, whose
- 7:54goals are where, where everybody's fitness levels are. And it's just such a
- 7:58good community. You're always to find somebody. Oh that's excellent, right,
- 8:01So now did you have I've got this right. You have done a couple
- 8:05of ultras, have you. I've done some long distance hike with distances which
- 8:13go beyond the marathon, and I have done anyone who's run a marathon,
- 8:18Who's watch tells them they've done more than the twenty six point two. I'm
- 8:20going to claim the Ultras, but no, I haven't run an official Ultra.
- 8:24No, I haven't quite transgressed to that level of crazy yet. Whether
- 8:28or not it comes, we'll see. Yeah, yeah, good right.
- 8:31Okay, we're going to take a little break now, but we're going to
- 8:33come back because the reason you're here is to tell us about the Couch to
- 8:37five K Beginner's Course, how it all started and how it all ended last
- 8:43week on the lease. So let's sit back and listen to a bit of
- 8:46soft cell and tainted love. Soft cell there. Okay, now we're back
- 9:01in the studio with Karen. Now, the idea of bringing Karen in today.
- 9:05Over the years we've had several South Harriers in and it's lovely to have
- 9:09them in speaking and telling us about the club and the training achievements. But
- 9:13today is all about the accounch to five K Beginner's Course. So, Karen,
- 9:18was this your idea? Guilty as charge? Yes, it was,
- 9:22yeah, okay, So how did you did you have to approach the club
- 9:26and say, look, I've got this idea. I want to recruit some
- 9:28people. What do you think exactly that? So I took the suggestion to
- 9:31the committee at the end of last year. Everybody seemed to think it was
- 9:35a great idea. I did say at the time that it would take more
- 9:37than one person to facilitate support and be able to run it successfully, and
- 9:43I was happy to go forth if I had the support of other members and
- 9:48the club. The members have been fantastic, so we put together a Facebook
- 9:54post. The whole thing came about with a Facebook post to see how much
- 9:58interest there was, and that was just the beginning to the middle of December.
- 10:03We put word out with a view to start the course on the seventh
- 10:07of January, and the interest was phenomenal. It yeah, really really big,
- 10:13at which point we didn't know how many might turn up on that first
- 10:16morning, if anybody would turn up on that first morning, so we had
- 10:22nothing to worry about. I mean, we've averaged on a Sunday morning twenty
- 10:26people, made up of helpers, volunteers and newbies. Some of the newbies
- 10:33have been every week, so when we started in January, some of the
- 10:39newbies had never run a step before, some had run many many years ago,
- 10:46some had run a little bit recently, but they just wanted a bit
- 10:48more structure and a bit more routine. We also had a few of our
- 10:52club members that had fallen out of their routine and wanted to use the sessions
- 10:58as an additional coach session in the week as a way to get quicker,
- 11:01as a way to manage pace judgment more carefully. So it was a really
- 11:05really varied group. So tell me what happened that very first week. What
- 11:11did you say, welcome right off we go? Absolutely So the first week,
- 11:13I woke up in the morning, opened the curtains and it was the
- 11:16wettest, windy race morning and we thought, oh, I don't know how
- 11:20many people are going to brave it. And we all met down at the
- 11:24Rowing Club, which is our usual meeting place, and we did the first
- 11:31training session, which was a five minute walk and then eight one minute run
- 11:37followed by one minute walks and a five minute walk, all done up at
- 11:41the Embrooke car Park. It was a really useful space to use because everybody
- 11:46could work out their own pace and ability and we could still monitor everybody's rather
- 11:52than go right along the prominence within one nice neap space, so we did
- 12:01every Sunday morning for eight weeks of the ten weeks, and then for week
- 12:05nine we took them up to the lees, at which point they were working
- 12:09towards running for twenty five minutes, NonStop, continuous running. And it also
- 12:16meant they had the introduction to the lees as their graduation run in week ten
- 12:20was in fact going to be focusing on. All right. I bet that
- 12:24stepped from the car park to the lees was a bit we've all been lose.
- 12:28Everyone's been at the lease for a walk on a lovely Sunda day,
- 12:30but when you think, oh dear, I've got a run on this,
- 12:31yeah, and five k suddenly looks really long and really far. Yeah yeah,
- 12:37Okay, So your group, you've told us how it was made up,
- 12:39but I'm interested to know like that, the range of ages and was
- 12:45it male or female base. So we had a really nice mix of both,
- 12:48more females than males, but we did have a couple of gents.
- 12:52We had. Of the people that showed interest initially, some of them when
- 12:58they'd made contact with us, it was apparent they didn't need to join the
- 13:01beginner's group. They were already established enough to come straight into the main club.
- 13:05So we did get a couple of direct memberships from them, and we
- 13:09had sixteen newbies, completely fresh newbies. Of the sixteen, we lost four
- 13:18along the way. We said to everybody, come along, just come along
- 13:22and try. If it's not for you, there's no obligation to come again.
- 13:26A couple, unfortunately it had picked up injuries or were dealing with health
- 13:31issues, which meant they couldn't continue. Of the sixteen, we had eleven
- 13:37graduates on Saturday, and of those eleven, seven or eight of them are
- 13:41hoping to then now join us. Oh it's excellently Yeah. And on the
- 13:46actual day of lost Saturday, did everybody do their own thing or did you
- 13:50kind of stick together in a group? Everybody did their own thing. And
- 13:54what was really really lovely is as the weeks have gone on that even the
- 14:00club members that haven't necessarily been directly involved in this beginner's group, they've all
- 14:03been doing their long runs on a Sunday morning down at the club and everybody
- 14:07congregates at the end, and everybody's been asking how everyone's getting on. So
- 14:11when we all arrived on Saturday morning at part run, some of our really
- 14:15strong established runners at the end of their run automatically went back onto the course
- 14:20and they helped some of the beginners finish. I don't know if you were
- 14:24there on Saturday, but I started at the start. I never actually got
- 14:28beyond the bandstand because I just did the top bit up and down, up
- 14:31and down to make sure they were all happy, safe and finishing with smiles.
- 14:37And what was the feeling like? You obviously all got together, there
- 14:41was pictures and stuff like that. I mean, were they really really buzzing?
- 14:43Did they think that's absolutely delighted? I mean some of them really really
- 14:46had had no belief in themselves at the beginning that this was going to be
- 14:50something they would actually be able to achieve, And we just kept reminding that
- 14:56it wasn't anything we'd done. It was their consistency, their regular turning up,
- 15:01and they had to do whatever we did with them. On a Sunday
- 15:03morning. They were asked to complete the same session twice more before coming back
- 15:09the following week, and all of them were so good at doing those homework
- 15:13runs. Yeah so good. Yeah, that's so good. And so you've
- 15:16got a couple of new members hopefully, and have anybody shown any sort of
- 15:20ambitions to perhaps through the ten k. Absolutely absolutely so. Of the original
- 15:26newbie group, some of them had no intention of progressing any further than that
- 15:33five k, but they've left us with the skills and the knowledge that they
- 15:37can. They've chosen to do something they've never done before and they've absolutely nailed
- 15:41it. Others have done longer distances in the past but had lost all confidence
- 15:48in themselves and are now in a place where they feel that they're ready to
- 15:52tackle them again. Yeah. Oh, that's awesome news, Karen. I
- 15:56mean that buzz when they crossed the line. It must have been was you
- 15:58there and they all cross the line? Yeah? It wasn't just it was
- 16:02such a huge team event. We had all the coaches had come, all
- 16:06the athletes, all the newbies, everybody had finished their run. There was
- 16:10a huge sea of orange and white on the leaves on Saturday morning. Excellent.
- 16:15So while we're on AA here and we're talking about this, what would
- 16:18you say to somebody that's listening to this interview about coming along? Do you
- 16:23think you'll do another course? I mean, it was definitely successful. It
- 16:30was a really positive experiment that we did, and it's brought all of the
- 16:33club closer together as well, because as well as me and the coaches and
- 16:38the helpers, we had some helpers coming every week to make the teas and
- 16:42coffees at the end of the run. One lady from the club came every
- 16:45week, so two of our new bees had some childcare providers. Some one
- 16:52of our runners would run with us every week to take all the pictures.
- 16:56Some of the established runners would be there to offer advice and generally have a
- 17:00chat. We really wanted to showcase the community that South Kent Harriers is.
- 17:04Yeah. Good, So what would you say, as I was trying to
- 17:07say, what would you say to somebody that's listening to this now and really
- 17:11just thinking, do you know what listens to this? I could do that?
- 17:15What would you say to that You absolutely could do that. Anybody could
- 17:18do it. I would say to anybody just try give yourself ten to twelve
- 17:22weeks and give it a go. Honestly, anybody can get there. Okay,
- 17:27now it's been great Evan, you're on Karen, but it sounds like
- 17:32you couldn't have done this on your own. You've had the back end of
- 17:33the club. Is there any thank yous or anybody you want to mention there
- 17:38are so many people. I wouldn't want to upset anybody by missing anybody out.
- 17:42But I had a regular team of between eight and ten members every single
- 17:47week supporting me, helping me, keeping everybody on track. And it also
- 17:52meant that most weeks, whether it be up in the car park or on
- 17:56the lees, the runners actually had one to one support of the newers,
- 18:00the newer runners that wanted that support, and some people needed more support than
- 18:04others, and it meant that we could offer it, which was just lovely
- 18:08to offer something so inclusive. Okay, So if for someone out there now
- 18:11driving around and listening in the car or listening to Alexa at home, how
- 18:15can people make contact with you? You can find us either on Facebook.
- 18:19The South Kent Harris have got a website. There's a contact us button on
- 18:23there. Come and see us. We're always down at their own club on
- 18:27a Tuesday and a Thursday. We meet at six o'clock ready to run at
- 18:32six fifteen. And like I said, there are three groups that operate,
- 18:36so regardless of where you're at at the moment, there'll be a space for
- 18:40you and there will be an environment for you to encourage everybody else you'll be
- 18:44part of a team and we can see improvements week on week. Karen,
- 18:48thank you so much for coming in and listeners out there, if you ever
- 18:52thought yourself, I can do this. Some people have gone on from park
- 18:55Run to to do marathons. It's like Karen did in the early days,
- 19:00gone from zero. As long as you don't do it too quickly, so
- 19:03please please come along. Karen, thank you so much for coming in,
- 19:06and well done to everybody out there. I hope you're going to listen to
- 19:10this little podcast. All those that did that five k on Saturday, well
- 19:15done to you. Okay, time for a bit of music and we have
- 19:18got the Pretenders and this is a good one, don't get me wrong.
- 19:27Don't get me wrong. There from the Pretenders, and that's one for all
- 19:32the newbies who did the couch to five k and you can save yourself.
- 19:37Don't get me wrong. I've done it. I've done five k and you
- 19:40can move on. And we want to see you regularly up at the park
- 19:41Run. I want to see you changing color T shirts because you get a
- 19:45T shirt every time you hit a milestone. All right, time for some
- 19:48football news now, folks, and in Victoria to dig in for their three
- 19:52points on Saturday when they beat Kingstonian three to two. The first goal of
- 19:57the game came in the sixteenth minute when Eddie also putting, Victor won nil
- 20:00up. Kingstonian scored just four minutes into the second half and once again in
- 20:06the fifty third minute to go two on ahead. Sato so and Ogo and
- 20:10Dave Smith added one each for Invictor and the final score was a win for
- 20:14Invictor three goals to two. The Saturday they played Kenvy Island at home a
- 20:18Charon Road kickoff at three o'clock. Now hive jown Hive Joan had a bad
- 20:22day at the office when they welcomed Horndean to Reachfields and so but we're going
- 20:26to listen to our men on the spot there, Tom Millerby, and he's
- 20:30going to tell us his report. It was a dreadful afternoon at Reachfields on
- 20:33Saturday as hiver Thrush four nil by Horndean. Returning manager Steve Watt made two
- 20:38changes from the two on victory Atway at Herne Bay last Saturday, as Caine
- 20:42Philip and Brad Schaeffer replaced Kai Garrand and the injured Ethan Smith. The game
- 20:48got off to the worst possible start as a ball in from the right by
- 20:51Freddy Chester was tipped away by Jack West's Duty, with Conduffin meeting it with
- 20:55a diving head on the rebound, which flew into an empty net. It
- 20:59wasn't long until Hounding scored their second on twelve minutes as Chester once again sent
- 21:03a ball in, this time from a tricky angle in the box on the
- 21:06left, which was slammed home by Zach Willetts. The visitors made it three
- 21:10in injury time, thanks once again to Zach Willett, who found himself with
- 21:12all the space in the world on the right hand side on the counter attack,
- 21:15sending the ball goalwards. Jack Quest's Duty appeared to have made contact with
- 21:19the ball but was unable to keep it out, meaning it was three nil
- 21:22at the break. Nothing seemed to have changed in the second half, and
- 21:26Hounding were able to score their fourth seventeen minutes in as a high defense switched
- 21:30off, allowing Zach Willett to score his hat trick. The result marked Hyde's
- 21:34heaviest home defeat of the season. After Tuesday night's match against Beckingham Town was
- 21:38called off, Hi fans will be looking for the team to bounce back on
- 21:41Saturday as they host Three Bridges at Reachfield's kickoffs at three pm. We heard
- 21:47just before dire straight Sir Tom Illerby was turning us about Hive who sadly went
- 21:51down four nil and the next game, as he said, is on Saturday
- 21:55against Three Bridges. Now, staying with football, Hawkins Town had a decent
- 21:59two one away win against Bexley on Saturday, keeping them on second spot.
- 22:03Goals coming from Luke Reeve and Sam Grant. Man of the match was split
- 22:07them. It's a bit unusual for them to split it, but I'll tell
- 22:11you why they did it. They split the man of the match award between
- 22:14Tyler Clements and the keeper Sam Grant. Now, Sam not only made some
- 22:18crucial saves, but he actually scored from the eighty yard free kick and it
- 22:22was cool on camera. So please please visit Hawkins Town FC facebook page and
- 22:27you will see Sam score in his awesome guy. Well done Sam. This
- 22:32Saturday the Hawks are away to Minster and that'll be at Ramsgates Ground. Now,
- 22:37commiserations go to deal Town as they bowed out of the FA VARs quarterfinals
- 22:42away at Lincoln United. The game ended one all and went to penalties,
- 22:47Lincoln winning the shoe out by four penalties to three. Now it's a classic
- 22:51thing to say, I know, but Deal can now concentrate on the league
- 22:55where they have seven games in hand after their cup runs. And that's seven
- 22:57games in hand over lead Glebe who are eight points ahead, so it's a
- 23:02chance they could catch up. So they're running in a rich reign of form
- 23:06at the moment. But will want to say thank you to Deal and for
- 23:10making the football in Kent so interesting as in recent weeks we've said about Maidstone.
- 23:15Maystone had a great run in the FA Cup. Deal had a great
- 23:18run in the FA Bars. So it seems like that that keeps the interest
- 23:22in k Kent football alive. A time for a bit of Queen Somebody to
- 23:27Love Academy FM, Folcus him function. That was Queen There Somebody to Love.
- 23:45Okay, you know we really got to crack on a bit because that
- 23:48old Karen's are right old chatterbox. You know she never couldn't I really had
- 23:52a job shower up. So that's what we love. People come through that
- 23:55door and they're so passionate about what they do so if we overrun, we
- 23:59don't care. So news from the Folks and Rugby Club Now. The first
- 24:03fifteen didn't have a game on Saturday and their next fixture is on the sixteenth.
- 24:07It's a tougher way game to top of the table. Seven Oaks the
- 24:11first team are currently fourth. The second fifteen well, I'm not sure quite
- 24:15what happened there last week, but they had to concede the game to East
- 24:18Peckham and Paddockwood. Let's hope for better things this week as they travel away
- 24:22to Snowden. The thirteen lost thirty five nineteen a way to deal Betsanger and
- 24:26on the sixteenth they also faced the top of the table team in Gravesend.
- 24:30They're playing them at home. The Thirds are currently eighth out of ten teams.
- 24:36Now the sixth Nations rugby? Did you watch? That? Is so
- 24:37exciting this year? It didn't disappoint once again. The match starting the weekend
- 24:42sa Italy take the first win in eleven years at the Stadio Olimpicole where they
- 24:48beat Scotland by thirty one points to twenty nine. The second game saw England
- 24:52beat Ireland by the slimmest of margins to win the game twenty three points to
- 24:56twenty two thanks to a dramatic drop kick goal scored by Marcus Smith in the
- 25:00eightieth minute, denying Ireland a Grand Slam. Now, grand slam is when
- 25:06one team. There's the six nations. If one team beats all five of
- 25:10them, that is a Grand Slam. But that finish reminded me. I'll
- 25:14bet it took a few of you back to two thousand and three when Johnny
- 25:18Wilkinson did exactly the same in the eightieth minute of the game and they beat
- 25:22Australia to win the World Cup. Right. So now France beat Wales by
- 25:29forty five points to twenty four in front of their home fans. This week
- 25:33sees the final nail biting games. Wales played Italy in the fight to stave
- 25:37off the Wooden Spoon. This one can be seen on BBC at two point
- 25:41fifteen, Island played Scotland, shown on ITV at four forty five, and
- 25:45England played France in Lyon for the final game of the series, shown at
- 25:49eight pm also on ITV. Rugby lovers, this is definitely a day for
- 25:55you in front of that Telly, okay, So we're going to move on
- 26:00wheelchair basketball. Now I've got some updates the Arrows now they didn't ever.
- 26:03They don't have a game until March the twenty third, when they're away to
- 26:07Herod Heat, which means a trip to Cumberton Village College near Cambridge. The
- 26:12other two fixtures to end the season are on the sixth of April at home
- 26:15to Cardiff met Archers. Then the last game is away to the same team.
- 26:21Now, I've been studying the league table and the Arrows are currently top
- 26:25with sixteen points, level with Thames Valley Kings, but the Kings only have
- 26:29one game left to play. A big danger comes from the Southern Sharks,
- 26:33who've played the same amount of games as the Arrows and are only one point
- 26:36behind one point behind. But the biggest danger of all comes from the team
- 26:41that Arrows have to play twice in succession, the Cardiff met Archers. They've
- 26:45only played seven games and they are on fourteen points, just two points behind
- 26:49the Arrows. So these two games against Cardiff are going to be absolutely crucial
- 26:53as the end of the season closes in right time for a bit of a
- 26:59rowing news mentioned now for Billy and Sam from the Folks and Rowing Club.
- 27:03When they came back from Southampton. Their visit paid off as they won the
- 27:07British Transport Commission that's the BCC Springhead Race, choosing a double skull as they
- 27:14normally race in a pair or four. So well done to Billy and Sam,
- 27:18and thank you to Sally Watkins for that information. Okay, we're getting
- 27:22near the end now, so we're just going to bang on a tune and
- 27:23see what comes up. That's from nineteen eighty four. Okay, right,
- 27:37We're going to play just a little bit of a song now because we are
- 27:40overrunning a little bit. But I love it. It's just like just trying
- 27:42to squeeze everything in. So I'll be back with you after the news and
- 27:45we'll be chatting with Adrian. I hope I've got that right, No,
- 27:51Adrian, I don't know. I'll ask you next time. This is Kevin'
- 28:07Sports Very Daily, back for the second hour of the Folks on the High
- 28:10Sports Show. Where did that first hour go? A fly by coming up
- 28:19in the sound. We've got another special guest. Then, we've got Adrian
- 28:26from the Folks on Oximus Hockey Club. So she's going to be telling us
- 28:30about her team. She's coached for the under fourteens. They got a massive
- 28:33game of the weekend, so then we will do all the hockey reports.
- 28:40We've got a running report and I won't be doing anything about Heartbeat this week.
- 28:47I'll give you a break. But what I'm going to do tell you
- 28:49a couple of stories from the Royal Hospital fictional hospital set in the sixties,
- 28:55so we'd be playing some sixties music of coming up. First of all,
- 29:02this hour of the show, we've got the average white band pick up the
- 29:03pieces and some local music and then we will be back and then a local
- 29:25music there Jermaine Riley and a song called Smallville. Okay, Now we joined
- 29:29in the studio for the second hour by Adrien Rowe. Hello Adrian, how
- 29:33are you? Yeah? Good? Thank you good. Thanks for coming in
- 29:34because it's a really exciting time, the exciting weekend for you. Now you're
- 29:38the coach of the boys Ops under fourteens and we're going to come on to
- 29:42them a bit later. But tell us a little bit about yourself. How
- 29:48you got into hockey. You've been playing hockey a long time, yes,
- 29:49so I've been a member of the club since the late nineties. I joined
- 29:56I was a family full of cricketers and footballers and decided that I want to
- 30:00do something for myself. So a friend introduced me to hockey club and I've
- 30:03been there ever since. Oh well, yes, so was that the rebel
- 30:07when you come in there, just think possibly it was a good social place
- 30:11to be when you're a teen. Yeah, yeah, I mean that was
- 30:14great. That was back in the days of the old Cricket club and the
- 30:18grass pitchers. Yeah. The only time those pitches looked any good was for
- 30:22the Hockey Festival at Easter. Yeah. The rest of the time rubbish.
- 30:25But everybody, We've said this before. The game has changed now. Everybody
- 30:29plays on artificial pitch, don't they. Wherever you go away game. Some
- 30:33have got better facilities than other, but the stadiums are, if you like,
- 30:37all artificial pitches. So you know what you're going to get. Okay,
- 30:41So tell us So you went down the hockey club. Well what happened
- 30:44then? So I've played mainly Ladies toos. I've been captaining the Ladies twos
- 30:48for the last seven years. Last year we got promotion South East Division one.
- 30:52We're playing in It's been a pretty tough season this season. Having stepped
- 30:56up this year. But yeah, it is where I've grown up. Really.
- 30:59Yeah. So you still play on a Saturday and you coach on Sunday.
- 31:02Yeah, so yeah, plan on st say, coach on a Sunday
- 31:03and Monday, train on a Wednesday. Ah right, So do when you
- 31:07say train, do you train yourself for the boys? Yeah? Both,
- 31:11So train with the ladies squad on a Wednesday evening and then the boys train
- 31:14on a Monday night, which shy coach. Okay, So I mean since
- 31:18the Three Heels has developed and it's taken, if you like, a bit
- 31:22of a half a generation or so, but now you're really churning out a
- 31:25good production of hockey players, aren't you. I do think that the juniors
- 31:27that are coming through now are the first generation to benefit from Three Hills.
- 31:32You know, it's been there all their life. Yeah, and it's just
- 31:34the facilities are incredible. We go to lots of other grounds. Some teams
- 31:38are still playing at schools, no clubhouse, no changing rooms, and then
- 31:42you come to Three Hills. We forget how lucky we are. Yeah.
- 31:45Yeah right, And it's back to back, isn't it. On a Saturday,
- 31:48you can go down there. I love going down there on a Saturday
- 31:51and they put the board out where there's all the scores are, and they're
- 31:53coming in from the other games, and it's like back in the day you
- 31:56used to do the football pools and you think, oh it's six seven was
- 32:00oh, no, four team, I've got a draw. So making a
- 32:07switch from playing to coaching, well you're still doing both, but was it
- 32:13a big step? Did you think that you know, you might not be
- 32:15able to handle that are the weekends? Yes? I did think when I
- 32:17started the coaching, so that was about four years ago, I wasn't sure
- 32:22whether both were compatible. However, it does work out quite nicely because all
- 32:25junior hockey is on the Sunday. Yeah, senior hockey's on a Saturday.
- 32:29You know, coaching different days, so it fits in at the moment.
- 32:31Okay, so the fourteens, the under fourteens on their league fixtures, do
- 32:37you travel far? Is it just in ken It's not. We go as
- 32:39far as Surrey, so we've been. I think Oxted is offer this year
- 32:44this year about an hour and a half. Yeah. Yeah, And do
- 32:46you get any feedback from other clubs and teams when they come to the three
- 32:51heels they say, oh, wish we had one of these. Yes,
- 32:52well we absolutely do. Same in senior hockey as well. People come to
- 32:57us and recognize that we have it very good. Yeah, Now, just
- 33:02how big is junior hockey in folks? To them, let's say how many?
- 33:07How many teams have you got? So we've got a team at every
- 33:09age group from under eight to under eighteen, and on a Saturday morning we
- 33:14have some four, four and five year old training in the cage, starting
- 33:16them very young. It's grown hugely since I was a junior. You know,
- 33:22when I was a junior, it was just an under eighteen's team and
- 33:23that was about it. Really. Yeah, and so now we've progressed onto
- 33:27you know, and some under twelve boys. You're talking three teams that we're
- 33:30entering into competitions on a monthly basis. Yes, really has grown hugely.
- 33:36Last weekend I went down to watch to be honest, so I went down
- 33:38to watch the under eighteens football on the very far pitch and I turned around
- 33:44and I saw hoardes and hoards of people. So I went over and I
- 33:46spoke to Jenet Fuller. I said, what's going on? She said,
- 33:50well, it's the Kent under Ten's. In the morning it was the boys
- 33:53and in the afternoon no, So in the morning it was the girls and
- 33:57in the afternoon it was the boys. Mis Wu said to me, she
- 34:01said, I'm just popping up to Morrison's and it was just on the change
- 34:05over between the boys and the girl she was gone out. She couldn't get
- 34:07anywhere of their chair in High Street was absolutely packed. Anyway, it was
- 34:12so good to see these teams from all over Kent just enjoying. Thirty four
- 34:16teams in total that came to the club on the day from nine o'clock until
- 34:21you know, sundown. Really and it is only because that the Three Hills
- 34:24is there. They can handle that facility, isn't it. There's not many
- 34:29clubs that so, Like you say, the teams do come from all over
- 34:31Kent, but there's not many of us that can hold, you know,
- 34:34competitions like that. Yeah. And Janet Fuller is doing a great job and
- 34:38she's still playing. Is scoring goals, yes, yeah, a little birdie
- 34:43told me that she might be one of the top goal scorers at the end
- 34:45of the season. Sitting on top of yeah, yeah, that's good.
- 34:50Now we've we've said about coaching is coaching fourteen year olds a tough job sometimes?
- 35:00Especially boys? You know, yes, sometimes. I've had them for
- 35:02four years and it was definitely harder a couple of years ago than it is
- 35:07now. Really. Yeah, they've I don't know whether it's just growing up
- 35:12in life or whether we've got used to each other and we're rubbing along a
- 35:15little better. But yes, you know, it's not always easy, as
- 35:19with anything. But as a rule they're pretty good. Yeah, that's excellent.
- 35:22Well they're not too bad on the pitch either, which we're going to
- 35:25talk about in the second half. Now, I think is there a I
- 35:32don't know this, but is there an under fourteen sort of Kent representative side?
- 35:37Yes, so Kent the county sides go start under thirteen's actually and right
- 35:42the way up to under eighteens. We've got seven lads from our squad,
- 35:46two in the under fourteens and five in the under thirteens that made it through
- 35:51to county this year, which is excellent. Yeah, it just shows that
- 35:53it's all coming together. Right, we're going to have a little break now,
- 35:55are we going to play a bit of music? Oh, this is
- 35:58a great one of them, This one for a long time, but we're
- 36:00going to come back because there is a massive, massive game at the Three
- 36:04Hills and Adrian is going to tell us all about it from nineteen seventy one
- 36:25the ccs and Tap turns on the water. Okay, we're back in a
- 36:31studio now and we join once again by Adrian and Adrian there's a massive massive
- 36:37game coming up on Sunday at Three Hills, tell us about it. There
- 36:40is. So when we enter into the League and Cup with England Hockey,
- 36:46you enter into a tier. The lads are in Tier two and Tier four
- 36:52and we also enter into a national Cup competition. So the competition starts locally.
- 36:58You play against you know, local size. We played Cansburry and nol
- 37:01Park and as you go further along in the in the competition, you go
- 37:06a bit further Afield, Winchester, Sorry, Wimbledon we've been to. Yeah.
- 37:09So we are in the semi finals, semi finals and you've got a
- 37:15lovely lovely homes raw as well, haven't you. We had very lucky homes
- 37:17quarterfinal and semi final. Yeah. Because last week on the program, I
- 37:22think it was that I looked at a Google map out and found out where
- 37:25the other teams were and the furthest that you might have had to travel was
- 37:30Manchester, wasn't it. It was? Yeah, that'd have been a bigger
- 37:31way game. Yeah yeah, I mean it would have been a great experience
- 37:35for the boys. But I mean from an administration point for Three Hills and
- 37:37that it's it's nice to be on home territory and obviously an advantage. Now.
- 37:44Now have the boys been training this week? They have, We train
- 37:46every Monday. We've really been putting a focus on the cup games without putting
- 37:52on too much pressure. Lots of gameplay in training. We're so fortunate to
- 37:57have lots of people that have got expert knowledge that have come down to help
- 38:00us out. We've got hockey playing parents who have played, you know,
- 38:04very high suandard of hockey. We've got old club members that play played national
- 38:07league, all been helping us out. So it's fantastic. Yeah, and
- 38:10I bet it's really put I don't know, it's almost put the club back
- 38:15on the map, really, hasn't it. It has? Yeah, Yeah,
- 38:16especially in hockey circles folks, and always feels a little bit on the
- 38:20edge, I think because we're surrounded by the sea. Yes, and never
- 38:22sort of seen as one of the big clubs. But it's really great to
- 38:24put our name out there in the national competition. Oh brilliant. Yeah,
- 38:28So let's get back to basics for people that don't know hockey. How many
- 38:31in a team? Eleven on the bitch and how many in your squad?
- 38:36We've got fifteen? Fifteen? And are you loud if a player comes off,
- 38:40can he go back on again? Yes? Rolling subs? Yeah yeah.
- 38:45And the one thing I did learn actually when I was chatting with Brian
- 38:47Murrell watching the game your it would have been your quarter final, was that
- 38:52in actual fact, the game is played in four quarters of fifteen minutes,
- 38:57isn't it? Yes? It is actually that can it can be whole?
- 39:00That it's normally agreed beforehands. So the England Hockey guidance actually is to play
- 39:05halves at this age group. The coach from the other team and I agreed
- 39:08on this occasion to play quarters. Okay, so what will happen on Sunday?
- 39:14Will you have a chat between you again behlves? Yeah? Yeah,
- 39:19this weekend? Yeah yeah, So does it actually make any difference? Players
- 39:24sort of cool down and then take a bit of time to get going again.
- 39:28Yeah, it really depends on the circumstances of the game, because actually
- 39:30sometimes it's a good opportunity to get them together and have a chat about something
- 39:34that you want to change if you're playing quarters, whereas a half is a
- 39:37long time. Yeah, and changing something while they're trying to play is not
- 39:40that easy, right. I mean, when I watched the quarter, it
- 39:46was good. You're bo got there in time because I think the first goal
- 39:49went in with about thirty seconds it is. Yeah, you couldn't think of
- 39:52a better way to start a game, to be honest. Ye, I
- 39:54don't think the other team had to touch the ball before it when you're right,
- 39:58but they did pull the couple back. It was a really exciting game.
- 40:01Now, what was I going to say? I noticed I don't know
- 40:07much about hockey, but I noticed that some of your players that were playing
- 40:10that Sunday they looked like they had a bit more experience. And I talking
- 40:16to Brian, he said, oh, it was a couple of those played
- 40:20in the seventeen with us yesterday. So that must make a big difference,
- 40:23wasn't it. It definitely does. So when the lads turn thirteen, they're
- 40:29able to play in adult hockey. So the ones that are in the older
- 40:32age group of the under fourteens this year have been exposed at adult hockey.
- 40:36It makes such a huge difference, really changes the way they play their game.
- 40:39Yeah. Yeah, Because Brian was telling me that the day before the
- 40:43quarters, the goalie, your goalie, who didn't have much to do really
- 40:47on the Sunday, he was flying about all over the place. On the
- 40:50second he was I believe he got that game. Yeah, absolutely. Oh
- 40:53so that's that's really good. And I could see from being if you like
- 40:58uneducated hockey, expect that some of them definitely had a bit of an older
- 41:01hockey head on them, don't they. Yeah, right now the opposition,
- 41:07I don't suppose you know much about them apart from going on their website and
- 41:10having a little look. Yeah, I suppose. That's a good thing about
- 41:14these national competitions is that you actually don't know, but it's all very unknown.
- 41:17I think they're a similar size club to ours. Their lads play in
- 41:22a league, the same you know, similar to what you know, similar
- 41:24to us. It will just be what comes up on the day. Yeah,
- 41:27that's right, And no doubt if they've got the same structure, which
- 41:30I think they have. They've got four ladies teams and seven men's teams.
- 41:34No doubt some of their juniors have got senior heads on as well. Yeah
- 41:37yeah, okay, So I don't want you to name anybody, but do
- 41:43you think you've got any like budding players coming through in your team? Yeah?
- 41:46They really do play exceptionally well as a squad or fifteen, but there
- 41:52are I think at this age it's hard to tell because of them developing at
- 41:55different times. You know who is going to become a star. Yeah,
- 41:59but yeah, there are absolutely some, you know, excellent hockey players in
- 42:02there. Yeah. And do you find if you've got a pick eleven,
- 42:07is it on a bit of a round robbin system or you do kick off
- 42:10with your eleven best players? So in the league we do a bit of
- 42:15round robin, you know, depending on the game circumstance, depending who we're
- 42:16playing against in the cup, particularly these last three or four games, we
- 42:22start with our best eleven. Yeah, yeah, okay and the subs if
- 42:27you like, except that if it's a very close game and a very tight
- 42:30game, they might not get on. They do. I've not known maturity
- 42:34from lads that are just thirteen like it. You know, they completely understand.
- 42:37They're all about the squad and the team and you know, the result,
- 42:40the process rather than themselves. It's fantastic. Yeah, that's great game,
- 42:45gamemanship, discipline anyway, and it should be like that in any sports.
- 42:50And at thirteen, that's a very mature way to look at sports.
- 42:52I think it's not about me, it's about the team. Yeah, And
- 42:55do you think it's really sunk in or I mean thirteen fourteen year olds you
- 43:01know, you know that might go whatever, But has it really sunk in
- 43:05that they're in a semi final? I think they recognize that it's a pretty
- 43:08big deal. They are the most cool, calm and collective group of lads.
- 43:13They keep me call calm and collected, and so I think they understand,
- 43:16you know, that's probably the biggest game they've played in. But also
- 43:19they're ready. Yeah. Well, okay, now you're the coach, but
- 43:22behind the scenes, so to speak, there must be lots of people helping
- 43:25you out. So I know there's probably too many to mention, and you
- 43:30don't want to leave anybody out, But tell me what goes into what else
- 43:35do you need to run an under fourteen side. Apart from a coach,
- 43:37yes, I mean so many people. Really, all I'm doing is keeping
- 43:40the cogs turning. But the parents are so dedicated to take their you know,
- 43:45lads to all parts of the country to play hockey. We couldn't do
- 43:49it without them. We have lots of different coaches. We have a really
- 43:52good junior leader program within Optimists where the older juniors come down and help coach.
- 43:59The lads really respond well to that because it's a peer almost rather than
- 44:02a coach, you know, umpires that give up their time, you know,
- 44:07for nothing. And like I said, we've got seven players in the
- 44:10squad who have got hockey parents and it's great to have their expertise. I
- 44:14did notice that over the years, and I've been reading out these results and
- 44:19it might happen later on in the show actually that some of the names do
- 44:22come around again, you think it must be as dead. But just on
- 44:27that you've hit on that point about umpires for the semi final. Do you
- 44:30have to have independent umpires? We don't. Is club the club. So
- 44:35what we decided to do as a club is a points level one umpires who
- 44:42umpire lots of different standards, not just juniors, so yeah, I'm they'll
- 44:46be great. Yeah, good right, Okay, Now before we wind up,
- 44:52is there anything else you want to say or any thank you? It's
- 44:55always a tough one, this one, but now's your chance to mention any
- 45:00that you really really want to, anyone that's helped you. Yeah. I
- 45:04mean, I'd like to thank the lads really, because they've made it an
- 45:07absolute privilege. It's not a difficult job because they do such a good job.
- 45:12They're such a dedicated, committed group of lads and they make it thoroughly
- 45:15enjoyable. So the credit goes to them. So you say you've been with
- 45:17these boys as they've grown up. They've moved on to every year, so
- 45:22it's two yearly. So I started with them when they came into under twelve,
- 45:24so I've had them. This is my fourth season being around them.
- 45:29And will they stay together for next year? At under fourteenth to fifteen sixteen
- 45:35six years? That always tends to pieter off a little bit in all clubs
- 45:37because they're playing lots of men's hockey. But this group I think will be
- 45:42keen to carry on as a group of juniors as well. So we'll be
- 45:45entering under sixteen leagues next year. Okay, so right now before we go,
- 45:47last little thing, tell us when and where the game is and when
- 45:51people have got to be there on time beyond hopefully for an early goal.
- 45:54So the game is this Sunday at Three Hills and pushed back as a mid
- 45:58day right arilliant Adrianne, thank you so much for coming in. I am
- 46:02determined to be down there. I'm really really looking forward to this one.
- 46:06And so I want to wish you and all the underfowart is all the best.
- 46:08And I hope that lots of hockey people are out there listening to this
- 46:14and you just get along there. Just if you've never watched hockey before,
- 46:17just go down. You've never been to the three years before, just go
- 46:21down. Have a look. This is on our doorstep. It's a national
- 46:23competition. So Adrianne, thank you so much. Thank you crusaders there and
- 46:43street life and well, what an interesting interview that was with Adrianne. It's
- 46:50so good that you know a local team can get to a semi final of
- 46:53a national cup. And now it's time for a roundup of the scores from
- 46:58the folks and optimists. It was feully a better week overall than last week.
- 47:01The stats read they played twelve, they won eight, they lost three,
- 47:06It drew one, goals scored four was thirty four and the goals against
- 47:10was twenty six. Now, if you remember last week the goals four and
- 47:15against was both twenty six in fact, so this week the goals against stays
- 47:19the same, but the club scored eight more goals. Okay, here we
- 47:22go. The men's first eleven drew three all with Maidstone, the goals coming
- 47:27from Josh Clifford, Phil if Youurrailed and Harvey Little. The Seconds beat Old
- 47:31Williamsonians four to one thanks to goals from Lorcan Doyle who scored twice, plus
- 47:36one apiece from Nick Hopkins and Matt Mannering. The Thirds lost five to two
- 47:39to Mardin Russetts. The fourteen beat Grasham and welcome five nil goal shared between
- 47:45Jack Dixon, Jack Timmins, Ben Williams, A. J. Vigo and
- 47:50Joe Thresher. The fifteen lost five to one to burn ash and the sixteen
- 47:53beat a New York Beccahamians four to three thanks to a hat trick from Steve
- 47:58row and one from Harry row Hang and I recognize these names, Steve Rote
- 48:04and Harry Rowe, Adrian, is there anything to do with you? Yes,
- 48:07husband and son really even his pusand yet and Harry is my son.
- 48:09They've been playing sixes for the whole season. Yeah. Oh that's awesome.
- 48:15Yeah, brilliant. And do you know what, there's something that I always
- 48:17wanted to do. I mean, I played football to a ripe old age
- 48:21and my lad was quite a good football He played in the in Victor under
- 48:23eighteens, but we never played like senior football together and I feel like it's
- 48:28one of my biggest regrets. So your son, Harry, is he actually
- 48:32in your your squad? He is? Yet he's on the forward line in
- 48:35the squad for Sunday yep? Is he? Oh? Is he one of
- 48:37the first names on the on the team shoot or is he one of the
- 48:40last ones? He will be on the start he will be on the start
- 48:44on line yeah, Oka, oh, that's brilliant. And we have noticed
- 48:47in the past actually that, as you said in your interview, that is
- 48:52kind of a family thing, isn't it. Some some family names have been
- 48:55linked with the hockey club for years, haven't they. Yeah, they absolutely
- 48:58have and it's so nice to generations playing together. It's fantastic. It's a
- 49:01very family orientated club. Brilliant. Okay, thanks Adrian for that little update.
- 49:06There we go, fresh from the horse's mouth so to speak. Right,
- 49:09So we got the seventh team now they beat another Beckahamian side by three
- 49:14goals to one thanks to two goals from Elliott Wilson and one from Adam Nordine.
- 49:20The Ladies first team beat Oxford four three in an exciting encounter where it
- 49:23was three or with fifteen minutes to play. Cleo Steer scored the winner after
- 49:28some great interpassing and they come out winners there, so well done to them.
- 49:34The second lost four one to Modern Russett's, the third to beat Tunbridge
- 49:37Wells two to one, both goals scored by Empulling, and the fourteen beat
- 49:40New Beckahamian's three nil, Tessa Hugen getting one and Daniel bambam Minard scored the
- 49:46other two. And finally the fifth team came bouncing back after their heavy defeat
- 49:51last week to beat Old Williamsonians by two goals to nil, goals coming from
- 49:54Janet Fuller and Vicki Jones. So okay, Adrian before you go. Now,
- 50:00so just how big is this game on Sunday to the club and to
- 50:05the area hopefully to the area. And now we've given it enough publicity.
- 50:07Yeah, it's a brilliant, you know, example of how hockey is really
- 50:13developing, particularly in this area. And the club is huge. You know,
- 50:15it's excellent for juniors to get through this far in the national competition.
- 50:19Fantastic. Okay, Adrian, thank you so much once again. And I'll
- 50:22be there on Saturday Sunday at twelve o'clock. Well, I'll better get there
- 50:25early inue cases, another early goal. Yeah, okay. It's a bit
- 50:30of music now from these dreams, these dreams there from heart Now. In
- 50:57recent weeks, I've been playing sixties music early team with the storyline on the
- 51:00TV series Heartbeat. Well, this week I'm gonna give it a break from
- 51:04Heartbeat and turn my attentions to the hospital drama The Royal. Now. This
- 51:09show is a bit of a spin off from Heartbeat, with several characters for
- 51:13the first few episodes popping up in both shows. It's also set in the
- 51:16sixties, and it follows the lives of the staff at the fictional Saint Aidan's
- 51:22Royal Free Hospital serving the town of Elsin By, which of course doesn't exist.
- 51:27Now, the first song to hit the first song to hit you about
- 51:30this show is the theme song, and it really is aptly named and it's
- 51:36called Somebody Helped Me and it was originally sung by the Spencer Davis Group Spencer
- 51:52Davis Group for Somebody Helped Me. Now. The storyline that I watched was
- 51:57about a newly born baby found on the hospital steps. He was wrapped up
- 52:00in a scruffy old red blanket and whilst the staff were all fussing and cooing
- 52:05over the little one. This song a rag Doll by the Four Seasons was
- 52:08being played from nineteen sixty four of their four seasons and rag Doll. Now
- 52:30back to the storyline, the mother was found to be a sixteen year old
- 52:34schoolgirl who was with the support of her mother in the end, decided to
- 52:37keep the baby rather than give it up for adoption. Now changing the subject
- 52:44slightly, but still to do with hospital and operations. I had a great
- 52:47catch up with two of my Eurotunnel buddies during the week, dale Beck and
- 52:52Neil Coles, and what a pair of old crocs they are. Too.
- 52:55Dale has just come out of hospital after having a hip replacement and Neil goes
- 53:00in next month for the same operation, so they won't be stratting their stuff
- 53:05on the dance floor for a very long time. Now. There was one
- 53:07tune I was trying to find a hippy hippy shake, but I couldn't track
- 53:09it down on our playlist. So this is for you and Neil and Dale
- 53:14is hip to be square out by Huey Lewis. Huey Lewis and the news.
- 53:30They are hip to be square that especially for Dalback and Neil Coles.
- 53:35What a hippie pair they are right. We're running out last bit of sport
- 53:38now and I've really got to crack on with this. Last Sunday I was
- 53:42on the mic at the nice Work Brett Lid half marathon and twenty mile road
- 53:45race. Now, this is a very popular day on the running calendar as
- 53:50many athletes use it in a build up for a spring marathon. Seven hundred
- 53:53and six runners in total cross the finishing line. Four hundred and seventy eight
- 53:57completes in the twenty and two hundred and twenty eight compete in the half.
- 54:01Now, it was a Dan Poldrisley Day. It wasn't very nice but anyway,
- 54:06Folks and Running An Athletics Club had twenty four taking part, with many
- 54:08runners reaching a PB. Notable performances from the club came from Simon Ramsey,
- 54:14second overall in the half in a PB time of one hour eighteen five seconds,
- 54:19finishing strongly just four seconds behind the winner. Also in the half,
- 54:23Taubyn Jessen was tenth overall, coming in first in his age category, Mailvett
- 54:28sixty and also fine running from Simon Coffee and Kate Lansfield. In the twenty
- 54:34first runner home for the club was Darren Crue in a PB time of two
- 54:37hours sixteen forty eight seconds. Other pbs came from Darren's partner Jody Jody Stokes,
- 54:43running in two hours forty eight forty four. Louisa Eid run her first
- 54:46ever twenty miler in two hours fifty four to thirty four, Ian Vousden's PB
- 54:52was just under three hours two fifty nine two and Dominic Shepherd's PB was three
- 54:58hours twenty two to twenty three seconds. Alton Richardson, Debbie Palmerter and Lisa
- 55:04Smith are also to be congratulated on running their first ever twenty South Kent Harriers
- 55:09had ten runners in the half. Dan Carter finished in one hour twenty seven
- 55:14thirty six, Andy Gardner one hour forty four to twenty six, Rebecca Young
- 55:19one forty four forty seven which was a PB. Rebecca Edwards was carrying a
- 55:22knee injury, but she finished successfully thanks to help from Michelle Barnes. In
- 55:28the twenty Sarah Roan and Morton ran two hours fifty one oh seven, Marie
- 55:31Watson run two fifty nine to fifty eight, Martin Smith run three hours twenty
- 55:37thirty one a Pebe time. Melanroyd Powell three hours thirty six forty one running
- 55:44for back to Runners in Hive for raising money for a junior diabetes charity.
- 55:49Elis Stuart and Henry Cornbill, training for London, came in together in three
- 55:52hours twenty eight seventeen and I hope to have them in the radio station just
- 55:58before the marathon itself. Now, the day itself was cloudy, drizzly and
- 56:02wet, but that might have helped the runners. No wind and cool temperatures.
- 56:07Now, you know I've said in the past sometimes a song jumps into
- 56:09your head. Well it happened to me. On Sunday during the run,
- 56:14my partner Sue was asked by race director Mark Brocklehurst, who did an excellent
- 56:17job, by the way, if she could help timer Ian in the van
- 56:22to cool out runners. Details for those who decided to drop down from twenty
- 56:25to the half. It's a big thing to do, actually, you know,
- 56:29you just turn up and change your mind. Then it's still all got
- 56:31to be recorded now. At the time, it was raining hard and the
- 56:35van was the best place to do it. To keep try well. After
- 56:38about half an hour, I thought to myself, hang on where Sue.
- 56:43I looked over at the van and this song immediately popped into my head as
- 56:46I couldn't see her or Ian as the van was all steamed up. So
- 56:52steamy winders a Tina Turner and I'll say goodbye to you. I'll see you
- 56:57at the Free Hills. Make sure you are there on Sunday twelve. Look,
- 57:00and we're playing out now with steamy windows. I was thinking my the
- 57:20night we was out on the battle
