- 0:07Welcome back everybody here to the
- 0:09postgame pod at Auburn Undercover.
- 0:11Nathan King joined with Patrick Bingham
- 0:13as the Tigers grind out a 71-67 win over
- 0:18South Carolina. Um an ugly offensive
- 0:20performance from everybody pretty much
- 0:22not named Philip Yovic and uh Sebastia
- 0:25Williams Adams in the second half. But
- 0:27Patrick, this is the second straight
- 0:28game now where Auburn's top two scorers
- 0:30did not shoot the ball well. The
- 0:32difference from this one and the
- 0:34Missouri game on Wednesday was you
- 0:35defended a lot better in this game. And
- 0:38Philip Yoich had quite a statement and
- 0:40that's where we'll start. Um we sort of
- 0:42wondered, you know, what kind of player
- 0:44could he become this season? What kind
- 0:46of strides could he take? Um, and I
- 0:49think it's it's been really really
- 0:50impressive to see where how far he's
- 0:52come
- 0:53>> really in just the last five or six
- 0:55games because there was a point in
- 0:57non-conference play where he looked so
- 0:59uncomfortable defensively, really did
- 1:01not look confident with the ball in his
- 1:03hands.
- 1:04>> Confidence was not anything that he
- 1:05lacked tonight when he had the ball in
- 1:06his hands.
- 1:07>> Yeah. I mean, I think each of the last
- 1:09two of these postgame pods, we've done
- 1:11the like, oh, Philip, he keeps playing
- 1:13better. He keeps being more important.
- 1:15He keeps being a bigger factor. you
- 1:17know, he played well against Georgia and
- 1:18then he played well if he, you know, if
- 1:20he had him against&M and this that and
- 1:22the other and it just has progressively
- 1:23gotten better and obviously tonight was
- 1:25the culmination of all of that. Um, I
- 1:27mean, if I had told you Auburn was going
- 1:29to go two from 19 from three and Keshan
- 1:32Murphy or well, Keshan Hall was going to
- 1:35pick up his third foul with like over 10
- 1:38minutes left in the first half. I don't
- 1:40know if I would have picked Auburn and
- 1:42yet uh Philip does what he does tonight.
- 1:45It just again Yeah. from those
- 1:47exhibition games in Bur, you were in
- 1:49Birmingham, I was in Atlanta to like see
- 1:51him and just almost like see there's one
- 1:54point I was like sitting on the sideline
- 1:55like next to the bench and you could
- 1:57just kind of tell there was a little bit
- 1:58of a disconnect of like we are still
- 1:59which granted it's an exhibition game so
- 2:01like there is obviously you're still
- 2:02learning like the whole team is and just
- 2:04to see how far he's progressed all the
- 2:06way to today I mean is really
- 2:09impressive.
- 2:09>> Yeah, we talked to him um this week in
- 2:12in our midweek availability. He talked
- 2:14about his his growth. Um, you know,
- 2:16Steven said postgame, look, the the
- 2:18language barrier is not anything to to
- 2:21ignore here because he said almost it's
- 2:23made Philip focus even more and be even
- 2:26more coachable cuz he said like look,
- 2:28sometimes he's not necessarily
- 2:29understanding everything we're saying. I
- 2:30mean, you know, when we're talking to
- 2:31Philip in media settings, it's like you
- 2:33have to be very clear, English is is far
- 2:36from his first language um coming from
- 2:38overseas. And remember again, I think I
- 2:40said this on the last show, not only
- 2:42that, he was Auburn's last arriving,
- 2:44regardless of where he came from or who
- 2:45he was, he was Auburn's last arriving
- 2:48member of the class. He came here in
- 2:49late June. Um, and so already it was a
- 2:51team that was in flux, having to figure
- 2:53things out after Bruce Pearl retired.
- 2:55And uh, and Yovic obviously has been
- 2:56learning on the fly, but Steven Pearl
- 2:58said there was a point early in the game
- 3:00where he realized South Carolina was not
- 3:03doubling the post, which was a very
- 3:05common thing teams have done,
- 3:06>> particularly against Keshan Hall. they
- 3:08try to make him do those skip passes.
- 3:10South Carolina wasn't doing that. And
- 3:11then Lamont Paris kind of corroborated
- 3:13that by saying, "I don't like to double
- 3:15team guys." And then he said some of his
- 3:16South Carolina players during a timeout
- 3:18were like, "Hey, can we start double
- 3:19teaming Philip Yoic?" I mean, just I
- 3:22mean truly it's it's an SEC game that
- 3:24you put on Yoic's back like, and that's
- 3:27not something I necessarily expected to
- 3:29be saying. Um, but you kind of saw that
- 3:32offensive confidence work for him today.
- 3:34We know he's been he's been improving
- 3:36defensively, but yeah, 23 points for
- 3:37him, nine of 12 from the floor. Uh zero
- 3:40turnovers for him, just a really really
- 3:42clean all-around game where uh and
- 3:44Sebastian stepped up in the second half
- 3:46as well. Uh both of those guys played
- 3:48almost the entire second half with like
- 3:50you said, Keshan Hall, four uh four
- 3:52fouls in this game, but I thought they
- 3:54also did a nice job of late in the game
- 3:57touching and going with with Keshan and
- 3:59uh and Sebastian and Steven credit at
- 4:01Ira Bowman for for doing a good job with
- 4:03that. Yeah, I mean, but it was the
- 4:04freshman tonight, which is just so
- 4:06interesting that they're the ones that
- 4:07really led the way. But, um, that was
- 4:10just the thing is like the three ball
- 4:11just was not working for Auburn all
- 4:13night. Kevin Overton hit the second one
- 4:15with like maybe twoish minutes left,
- 4:17which I kind of thought would seal the
- 4:18game and then South Carolina
- 4:19>> hit one 5 seconds later.
- 4:21>> Yeah. And so it but point being it but
- 4:25you saw so many times like Auburn would
- 4:26shoot a three, they'd get the rebound
- 4:28immediately take it up. There were
- 4:29several dunks in this game and I just
- 4:31think I mean Auburn had 40 something
- 4:33points in the paint. That's how you have
- 4:34to win if you're not going to make any
- 4:35threes but it and it was just like the
- 4:38freshman were so impressive tonight.
- 4:40>> Yeah.
- 4:41>> Yeah. South Carolina tried to I mean
- 4:43they made it a game all the way through.
- 4:45Um I think Auburn was up by nine with
- 4:47about four minutes left and South
- 4:49Carolina just kept shooting the three
- 4:50ball um in the second half. If I can try
- 4:53to find this really quickly. Yeah, South
- 4:55Carolina was six of 13 from deep in the
- 4:57second half. They started four of eight
- 4:59from deep in the second half. Mei
- 5:01Johnson had a couple that were just like
- 5:03>> I mean
- 5:03>> I mean he had one from like where our
- 5:04camera set up.
- 5:05>> Yes. Deep distance. And Stephen said,
- 5:06"Look, we showed them film. He could hit
- 5:08those just from inside half court, but
- 5:10it's it's it's tough to do that." So
- 5:11South Carolina made it a game, but
- 5:12credit to Auburn. You know, free throw
- 5:14shooting has been an issue um for this
- 5:16team, but they go 23 of 30 from the
- 5:17line. Pretty decent. Um but in the
- 5:19second half, they're 14 of 17 at the
- 5:21line. I mentioned Keshan Hall. Not a fun
- 5:23night for him. You can tell that fourth
- 5:25foul he's really frustrated but for him
- 5:26to step up basically those four free
- 5:28throws at the end
- 5:29>> put the game away. The other storyline I
- 5:32think of this game Patrick besides
- 5:33Philip Yovic you know offsetting some of
- 5:35Auburn's offensive struggles was there
- 5:37was a big challenge issued to this team
- 5:39after the game Wednesday Pearl did not
- 5:41like the energy that he saw. I think you
- 5:43saw that corrected very early on. It was
- 5:46it was down here on this end. Todd
- 5:48Pedford forced a stop and Steven like
- 5:50popped off the bench and ran and got
- 5:52right up in his face and was fired up
- 5:53like about them playing high level
- 5:55defense. Um and like you said, you
- 5:57needed to play that way defensively to
- 5:59win a game that was that ended up being
- 6:00a rock fight.
- 6:01>> Yeah. And that's the thing is that there
- 6:03were several blocks down there. I mean
- 6:05they just it again and that's not to say
- 6:07that they just like absolutely weren't
- 6:09trying or anything. Steven actually said
- 6:10that they against Missouri thought they
- 6:12guarded him well and Missouri hit some
- 6:13big shots. But overall, I just think
- 6:16that's especially for a team that's
- 6:18still jelling and is young in some key
- 6:22places. I know there's also some very
- 6:24big veterans on the team just like
- 6:26continuing to come together and to put
- 6:27the effort in. Steven said, I think it
- 6:29was the middle of the week after the
- 6:30Missouri game, he was like, "Look,
- 6:32Auburn had the best team ever for Auburn
- 6:35last year and they couldn't just show up
- 6:38and win. It's going to take bringing it
- 6:40every night, especially in this league
- 6:42when there's such a fine line between
- 6:45I don't know like five and
- 6:47>> probably 12. And it's like pulling off a
- 6:50win like this or pulling off a win
- 6:52against Missouri is going to make the
- 6:54differences.
- 6:54>> Yeah, I mean it's the league is getting
- 6:56to the point now that we've got a decent
- 6:58sample size of it's going to be tough to
- 7:01go out and get a win every single night.
- 7:02Um LSU beat that Missouri team you just
- 7:04lost to. I don't necessarily think
- 7:06anyone thinks LSU is all that good, but
- 7:08they beat Missouri um in Baton Rouge
- 7:10today. Uh Georgia beat they were up 20
- 7:13plus on Arkansas during that game.
- 7:15Kentucky came back on the road. We kind
- 7:17of left Kentucky for dead and now they
- 7:18beat Tennessee on the road. So really
- 7:20you have to bring your agame every
- 7:21single night. Um obviously you'd like to
- 7:23have a better offensive performance, but
- 7:24like you said, two of 19 from three when
- 7:27you score 42 points in the paint and
- 7:28have eight blocks. It's it's almost it's
- 7:30interesting the trends this team is
- 7:32taking because we were so concerned
- 7:33about the size and the interior players
- 7:36and and and we're not we haven't talked
- 7:37about Murf, but Keshan Murphy I thought
- 7:39had a pretty good game. So like all of
- 7:40your front court guys were really solid
- 7:42and and even without Keshan Hall playing
- 7:44a bunch. Uh Tahad Pedford is is the last
- 7:47guy kind of shout out played 33 minutes.
- 7:49Two of eight from the floor is not what
- 7:51you want to see from him but five
- 7:53assists, two blocks. Um only had one
- 7:56turnover and it came really late in the
- 7:58game. That was a performance Stephen
- 7:59Pearl said, "I I'll take that from your
- 8:01from your point guard in this game, a
- 8:02team team high, five assists." Uh,
- 8:04Patrick, now going into next week, it's
- 8:05a challenging stretch coming up
- 8:07regardless of who you'd be playing. But
- 8:09two games on the road in the SEC, it's a
- 8:11quick turnaround to Miss on Tuesday.
- 8:14>> For me, that game is very, very
- 8:15important because if you lose both on
- 8:17games on the road next week, again,
- 8:19winning on the road in the league is
- 8:21hard, but you're now sitting at what,
- 8:22two and three? You'd be two and five in
- 8:25the league. You're
- 8:25>> starting to dig a hole at that Yeah,
- 8:26you're you're digging a hole. I think if
- 8:28you're Auburn right now, you didn't want
- 8:29to drop those early games against
- 8:30Georgia and especially Texas A&M. Now,
- 8:33you're kind of just trying to keep your
- 8:34head above water and see if you can pull
- 8:36off some big wins. Obviously, Florida
- 8:37would constitute as one of those,
- 8:38>> of course. And&&M has turned I mean&m
- 8:40won again tonight against Texas. They
- 8:42they have turned into just that's not a
- 8:44team that where we would have projected
- 8:45them preseason versus where they are
- 8:47now. like they they're a good team and
- 8:49maybe for Georgia as well, but yeah, it
- 8:52miss is one of those where it's like you
- 8:53got to pick off some of the road games
- 8:55and that's one that like that's the one
- 8:57you have to get and so and then you go
- 8:59from there and Auburn hadn't won in
- 9:01Gainesville in a million years in either
- 9:03of our lifetimes but well I think but
- 9:05you know it that's going to be difficult
- 9:07but they they are getable. They're not
- 9:09as lead as they were last year. Granted
- 9:11they I think beat Vanderbilt today so
- 9:13you know that's going to be difficult.
- 9:14>> Yeah. I mean, the the the Gainesville
- 9:16streak is now longer than the Kentucky
- 9:18streak because Auburn went to rup last
- 9:19year. So now Gainesville is the most
- 9:20cursed place you have to you have to
- 9:22play. Yeah. I mean, you mentioned it.
- 9:24Georgia and Texas A&M, those were really
- 9:26tough late results that Auburn wasn't
- 9:28able to get, but like those are turning
- 9:30into pretty darn good teams. Like
- 9:32definitely NCAA tournament teams, but
- 9:33also to your point, you got to get one
- 9:35of these at some point, especially
- 9:37because, and we won't look too far ahead
- 9:38here, but you come back and play Texas
- 9:40that next Wednesday here at home. that
- 9:42four game stretch after that is Alabama,
- 9:44Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Arkansas. So,
- 9:47some of the best teams, some of the
- 9:48contenders, some of the SC title
- 9:49contenders, um, including Tennessee is
- 9:51going to be on the road. And so, um,
- 9:53Auburn's got an important week coming
- 9:54up, but of course it's it's important to
- 9:56get back in the win column, which the
- 9:57Tigers did tonight against South
- 9:59Carolina. And Philip Yoich was was
- 10:00certainly um, a really good story for
- 10:02them in this one. 71-67 for Patrick
- 10:05Bingham. I'm Nathan King. Head over to
- 10:07Auburn Undercover. Don't do that. Head
- 10:08over to Auburn.com.
- 10:10Uh, check out all of our junior day
- 10:12coverage from Christian Clemente and
- 10:14Jason Caldwell. Um, as Alex Golish and
- 10:16his staff,
- 10:17>> they were here.
- 10:17>> They were here. Barrett Gooish got
- 10:19probably the loudest I don't know if you
- 10:21got that on video.
- 10:22>> Yeah. Oh, I didn't get it on video. I
- 10:23was up in the stands.
- 10:24>> Okay. Barrett Gooish, Alex Golish's son,
- 10:26got probably the loudest crowd pop of
- 10:28the entire night when he was the
- 10:29celebrity uh the celebrity letter
- 10:31holder. It wasn't even Alex Golish. Like
- 10:32they they they made it. They were like
- 10:34>> he walked on way at the end. Everyone
- 10:36just already cheered.
- 10:37>> Yeah. Yeah. It was a It was a fun night
- 10:39for them. So, be sure to head over to
- 10:40auburn undercover.com. Of course, the
- 10:42transfer portal is also closed and we
- 10:44will be uh putting the finishing touches
- 10:45on the outgoing players, but Auburn
- 10:48continues to add players and so um and
- 10:50obviously we'll look we'll look to
- 10:51basketball and get ready for two road
- 10:52games next week. So, lots going on at
- 10:54auburn undercover.com
- 10:56and uh we will see you guys over there.
- 10:58Appreciate you all tuning in to the
- 10:59postgame pod. Talk to you'all soon.
