Ritualism versus Reality
In Isaiah 58 the Lord confronts a people who keep the outward forms of worship while their hearts stay far from him. They fast and bow their heads in sackcloth, then complain that God takes no notice. He answers that on their fast days they pursue their own business, oppress their workers and quarrel. Ritualism makes ritual an end in itself and tries to earn God's favor, which the Lord finds loathsome. Only trust in Christ gains a worshiper a hearing on high. The fast God chooses looses the bonds of wickedness and shares bread with the hungry, the fruit of living faith that James 2 describes…
