- 0:00Speaker 1: And a very good Memorial Day to you. And I
- 0:02Speaker 1: can say good Memorial Day because you will spend a
- 0:05Speaker 1: good time thanking people, whether in your heart those who
- 0:09Speaker 1: passed on, or even a living vet. Yes, it is
- 0:12Speaker 1: good to always thank a living vet for all those
- 0:15Speaker 1: people who fought and of course sadly those who died
- 0:18Speaker 1: for us. So remember on this Memorial Day, take a
- 0:21Speaker 1: moment kind of hoist the toast to those who died
- 0:24Speaker 1: for us, or say a prayer, moment of silence, just
- 0:27Speaker 1: some recognition, put out the flag to say thank you
- 0:30Speaker 1: for the ultimate sacrifice that you made for us. And
- 0:32Speaker 1: then yes, it's okay to enjoy a hot dog. And
- 0:35Speaker 1: then you can say happy Memorial Day. In that case,
- 0:38Speaker 1: it's okay to be happy once you first said thank you.
- 0:41Speaker 1: I think that's very important. Seven to ten w R
- 0:44Speaker 1: The Voice of New York. It's Ken Rosotto in from
- 0:46Speaker 1: Mark on Memorial Day. Monday, Mark, we'll be back tomorrow.
- 0:49Speaker 1: But you know, in the meantime, you spend good money
- 0:51Speaker 1: on a fancy schmancy computer router and it reaches every
- 0:54Speaker 1: inch of your home. Now you find out that Russians
- 0:58Speaker 1: could be hacking into it, reading every keystroke, to tap
- 1:02Speaker 1: and seeing every website you serf too. Well, it sounds crazy,
- 1:05Speaker 1: but it's not. Joining us now with this topic and
- 1:07Speaker 1: Morris brand and digital strategist Fisher, who could be found
- 1:11Speaker 1: on x and threads with username at Fisher and through
- 1:13Speaker 1: his website Fisher dot media. Good morning Fisher, Good morning
- 1:17Speaker 1: to you, sir. Good to have you want. So what
- 1:19Speaker 1: is this about home routers potentially being hacked by Russia.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Yeah, they discovered the Russian hackers compromised thousands of mainly
- 1:28Speaker 2: small office and home office routers across twenty three states
- 1:32Speaker 2: since at least twenty twenty four. The FBI and the
- 1:35Speaker 2: NSA issued a warning after they remotely resetted affected devices.
- 1:41Speaker 2: They got the permission via a court order, but they
- 1:44Speaker 2: reset the administration passwords on these routers, and they also
- 1:48Speaker 2: obviously urged owners to take immediate action to prevent ongoing,
- 1:52Speaker 2: you know, targeting of primarily military, government and critical infrastructure.
- 1:57Speaker 2: So if you had an in with that, if you
- 1:58Speaker 2: worked for the government, you were probably or you were
- 2:02Speaker 2: a subsidiary, you know, things like that, you were probably
- 2:05Speaker 2: a target. The attack hit mainly older routers from TP link.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Many are past what they call end of life so
- 2:12Speaker 2: they no longer receive security updates. But you know, there
- 2:15Speaker 2: are important things that you could do. If you have
- 2:18Speaker 2: a router at home, which is mainly all of us,
- 2:22Speaker 2: and you know, step one, update your router firmware regularly.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Automatic updates are pretty standard. If you have Nest, Wi
- 2:30Speaker 2: Fi or EUO, it's pretty standard. It'll it'll pop up
- 2:34Speaker 2: an update saying it's time to update, and then they'll
- 2:36Speaker 2: eventually just push it for you. If you have, you know,
- 2:39Speaker 2: a more advanced router like Netgear, a TP link in
- 2:42Speaker 2: this case, check the router's firmware, just log in. Reboot
- 2:45Speaker 2: your router weekly. You and I talked about this, and
- 2:47Speaker 2: you do it more often because you do a lot
- 2:49Speaker 2: of TV obviously from the house, and so it's always
- 2:53Speaker 2: good to reboot your router at least monthly or at
- 2:57Speaker 2: some regular interval. It helped clear potential malware and it
- 3:02Speaker 2: helps maintain security. Also, change the default username of passwords.
- 3:05Speaker 2: We've talked about this a lot, and this isn't just
- 3:07Speaker 2: the Wi Fi password. I'm talking about the back end
- 3:12Speaker 2: of your Wi Fi. Typically it's the username's admin and
- 3:14Speaker 2: the passwords one, two, three, four five, So change that
- 3:18Speaker 2: and if you have remote management. And again this is
- 3:22Speaker 2: if you're kind of like a you know, tech pro,
- 3:25Speaker 2: a tech know it all. Remote management allows you to
- 3:28Speaker 2: do things remotely, right, so outside of your house, turn
- 3:31Speaker 2: it off and then that way that's not a you know,
- 3:34Speaker 2: an endpoint for hackers. And then if you can use
- 3:36Speaker 2: a VPN, if you work from home to a company,
- 3:39Speaker 2: typically your work laptop has a VPN, but you can
- 3:42Speaker 2: get it for your house and for your your router.
- 3:45Speaker 2: It doesn't just have to be for for work or
- 3:47Speaker 2: for travel, So look into that as well. And keep
- 3:51Speaker 2: in mind, you know, your router is a high value
- 3:53Speaker 2: target because all your network traffic passes through it, whether
- 3:56Speaker 2: it's the lights turning on and off in your house automatically,
- 3:58Speaker 2: or your web traffic or your TV. So you know
- 4:02Speaker 2: you want to secure that. It's kind of like locking
- 4:04Speaker 2: your doors.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Well, I understand that Minnesota for real now because you
- 4:08Speaker 1: and I kid around a lot on the show we
- 4:09Speaker 1: do in New Jersey, but for real, Minnesota is now
- 4:12Speaker 1: making it basically illegal to use a VPN. Have you
- 4:15Speaker 1: heard about this. I'm catching you off guard here, So yeah,
- 4:18Speaker 1: they just passed legislation and it's it's basically to prevent
- 4:23Speaker 1: gambling using like call she. Okay, so what people were
- 4:28Speaker 1: doing to get around that so they could use call
- 4:30Speaker 1: she as they were using a VPN, so you couldn't
- 4:32Speaker 1: locate where they were, and they could say that they
- 4:34Speaker 1: were in a different state. So now the legislation has
- 4:37Speaker 1: been supplemented with something that said you can't use software
- 4:40Speaker 1: that says you're in a place that you're not. Well,
- 4:42Speaker 1: that's what VPNs do. They kind of disguise where you are.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Isn't that what they do?
- 4:46Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, they well, yeah, they log you in from
- 4:50Speaker 2: someplace else. Yeah, or you completely officscate your is it
- 4:53Speaker 2: the word looking for? Yes, yes, your location? So no matter,
- 4:58Speaker 2: it's not even saying you're from someplace elf, I would
- 5:00Speaker 2: say that. And I don't know how far along that is.
- 5:03Speaker 2: I can't say that that's going to pass because these services,
- 5:07Speaker 2: and I may or may not know from personal living
- 5:10Speaker 2: in Georgia and having to go to North Carolina or
- 5:13Speaker 2: Tennessee in order to do any type of sports betting
- 5:16Speaker 2: that you can't VPN. I can tell you you can't
- 5:20Speaker 2: play the lottery that way. I've been in another state
- 5:22Speaker 2: and wanted to play Mega millions, and I can only
- 5:24Speaker 2: do it from Georgia on the app, and so I
- 5:27Speaker 2: would say that that's not going to get very far.
- 5:29Speaker 2: But yeah, that's yeah.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Yeah, because and you're right, I use I use one
- 5:34Speaker 1: of the apps when I'm in New Jersey to buy lottery,
- 5:38Speaker 1: and when I travel to our place in Florida, where
- 5:41Speaker 1: they don't have that online lottery purchasing, you still have
- 5:44Speaker 1: to go to a store in Florida. I've tried to
- 5:47Speaker 1: use a VPN from there and it does not permit
- 5:49Speaker 1: you to use it. But apparently there are some apps
- 5:52Speaker 1: or that claim to be able to disguise where you're
- 5:54Speaker 1: from and whatnot, and I don't know whatever. I'm not
- 5:57Speaker 1: one of those nefarious individuals, but we listen less.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Go ahead. Yeah, nonetheless, I still think you know, in
- 6:02Speaker 2: our listening area, VPNs are okay, right, So if you
- 6:05Speaker 2: can lock you router down in the ways mentioned and
- 6:08Speaker 2: use a VPN if you can, and then it's just
- 6:11Speaker 2: extra secure. Fo.
- 6:12Speaker 1: I only bring it up because with the iHeartRadio app,
- 6:14Speaker 1: we just had a call from Puerto Rico, so we're
- 6:15Speaker 1: getting calls all over the world for us from and
- 6:18Speaker 1: that's where we want to let folks know that I
- 6:19Speaker 1: get a. I got a call her every day on
- 6:21Speaker 1: the show we do in Jersey from Minnesota. So that's
- 6:24Speaker 1: kind of interesting. All right, we have about a minute
- 6:26Speaker 1: and a half left. Reddit investors got a rude surprise
- 6:30Speaker 1: after Meta made a direct challenge to the popular social platform.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Talk about how that impacted shares of Reddit dropping because
- 6:37Speaker 1: of their app called Forum.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Yeah, so Reddit shares dropped almost six percent on Friday
- 6:43Speaker 2: because Facebook Meta rolled out a new app called Forum
- 6:47Speaker 2: and it's for their Facebook groups. Now Reddit, and I'll
- 6:50Speaker 2: try to be quick. Reddit is a great place to
- 6:53Speaker 2: go to if you have a question and you can
- 6:55Speaker 2: ask regular people. It's whether you know, whether should I
- 6:58Speaker 2: change the transmission flu it on my two thousand forward,
- 7:02Speaker 2: you know, explorer whatever, and they're you know, they're just experts.
- 7:05Speaker 2: There are people. It's also a cesspool, right, so so
- 7:08Speaker 2: Facebook basically rolled out a new one that's based on
- 7:10Speaker 2: the back of Facebook groups. It's attached to your Facebook account,
- 7:14Speaker 2: so it's clean. It probably you know, is less cesspooly
- 7:19Speaker 2: and you know, well, time will tell, but it is
- 7:22Speaker 2: attached to you compared to Reddit. You can create a
- 7:25Speaker 2: fake email, or you could just create an email that's
- 7:28Speaker 2: not you know, tied to yours. Apple and Google both
- 7:30Speaker 2: allow you to hide your email and you can create
- 7:33Speaker 2: a persona and then ask questions or whatever. Facebook won't
- 7:37Speaker 2: allow that because it's going to tie it to your account.
- 7:39Speaker 2: So whether or not this catches on as well as Reddit,
- 7:41Speaker 2: don't know, but at least it's an alternative if you're
- 7:45Speaker 2: not into the Reddit and the subreddits and the cesspool stuff.
- 7:48Speaker 2: They can because it could be pretty brutal.
- 7:51Speaker 1: There's a lot of hate on Reddit. There's a lot
- 7:54Speaker 1: of hate. People just they attack to attack. It's like
- 7:56Speaker 1: you're going to say, hey, it's a nice day.
- 7:58Speaker 2: No it isn't.
- 7:59Speaker 1: You're an idiot.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Die.
- 8:00Speaker 1: It's like what I just said, it's a nice day
- 8:02Speaker 1: by post unbelievable. Really, it's crazy. And by the way,
- 8:06Speaker 1: I'm the one who was doing the attacking. No I'm kidding.
- 8:09Speaker 2: It is. But you could get the app if you
- 8:10Speaker 2: want to try it. It's on iOS right now, that's
- 8:12Speaker 2: where they're testing it. It's called Forum by Facebook and
- 8:16Speaker 2: you can download the app.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Because what Meta needs is yet another addition to its
- 8:21Speaker 1: social media platforms.
- 8:23Speaker 2: Tied to your name and your persona, so they can
- 8:25Speaker 2: track you with everything that you have.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Absolutely Mark is at home right now saying ha ha,
- 8:31Speaker 1: I know everything about you. Yes, I just go buy
- 8:33Speaker 1: a first name basis with mister Zuckerberg. All right, Brandon.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Digital strategist Fisher who can be found on X and
- 8:39Speaker 1: Threads with user name at Fisher and through his website
- 8:42Speaker 1: Fisher dot Media. It was a pleasure. Thanks for coming
- 8:44Speaker 1: on the Mark Shramone Show today.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Thanks Ken you Bet and Ken.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Brazatowan from Mark for your Memorial Day. When we come back,
- 8:51Speaker 1: we'll take call. We squeeze in one or two before
- 8:54Speaker 1: the end of the hour. The number is eight hundred
- 8:56Speaker 1: three two one zero seven ten eight hundred three two
- 9:01Speaker 1: one zero seven ten for seven ten WR
