Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 0:08Speaker 2: All right, well, Rachel Entrican, you might be tired after
- 0:10Speaker 2: running 253-mile ultra marathon in 56 hours, but you got
- 0:14Speaker 2: nothing on the three hosts of No Dribble. It's Monday.
- 0:19Speaker 2: It's been a super big weekend of netball and No Dribble,
- 0:23Speaker 2: and we are emotionally full but physically depleted. Who knows
- 0:27Speaker 2: what's going to happen? You're on No Dribble.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Strap in!
- 0:29Speaker 1: No Dribble.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Hello and welcome to No Dribble, the podcast where we
- 0:44Speaker 2: talk about netball, we talk about so much more.
- 0:45Speaker 1: My name's Carolyn Swindon. I am Kath Cox.
- 0:48Speaker 3: I'm Liz Ellis and I'm trying not to sneeze. Guys,
- 0:52Speaker 3: I didn't get home last night. I got home at
- 0:56Speaker 3: uh 1am and you might think that i was out
- 0:59Speaker 3: after the diamonds game you know tying one on no
- 1:02Speaker 3: i was on a late flight and so today i
- 1:04Speaker 3: feel like i got hit by a bus and then
- 1:05Speaker 3: the bus threw it in reverse and ran over me
- 1:07Speaker 3: so apologies for being stupid.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Oh well i had the opportunity to tie one on
- 1:12Speaker 1: because we went out with the a few of the
- 1:14Speaker 1: fox crew to have you know final drinks and stuff
- 1:17Speaker 1: and i had one i was like yeah no i'm
- 1:18Speaker 1: out guys Do not do it.
- 1:21Speaker 2: So we should talk about this because there might be
- 1:24Speaker 2: a few people thinking, is Catherine Cox speaking to me
- 1:27Speaker 2: from beyond the grave? Oh, yes.
- 1:28Speaker 1: There was a fabulous little bit of clickbait today, Yahoo
- 1:31Speaker 1: Sports Australia. Who knew that was a thing? But it quotes,
- 1:35Speaker 1: netball world saddened after news emerges about Cathy Cox and
- 1:39Speaker 1: Kim Green. Oh. Kim took a screenshot of it and
- 1:43Speaker 1: sent it to me this morning. I'm like, what now?
- 1:45Speaker 1: Have we died or something? What's going on? Well, you
- 1:48Speaker 1: know what I think, though?
- 1:49Speaker 3: I think we should just have a little bit of
- 1:51Speaker 3: a brainstorm about what that might mean. I thought that
- 1:53Speaker 3: you two might have hooked up.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Eloped.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Eloped, yes. And then the sadness is for the lovely
- 1:59Speaker 3: Trent Copeland, who is Kim's husband.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Or for the rest of us who don't get to
- 2:03Speaker 2: go to a big wedding at Madison Square Garden.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Oh, yes.
- 2:06Speaker 2: The second one I would have missed this year.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Can you believe it? And then I'm like, well, if
- 2:11Speaker 3: Catherine Deloitte with Kim, she always told me that if
- 2:13Speaker 3: she ever changed teams, I'd be first choice, that I
- 2:15Speaker 3: didn't even get like a heads up. First right of refusal.
- 2:19Speaker 3: That's it. I think I got you to sign something
- 2:22Speaker 3: once when we were drunk in Paris about a first
- 2:24Speaker 3: right of refusal. Anyway, Matthew's not happy about it, but whatever.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:27Speaker 2: You've got to have backup plans. Remember when you were
- 2:31Speaker 2: playing for the Diamonds, it was always what if? What
- 2:34Speaker 2: if this happens? What if that happens? We saw the
- 2:37Speaker 2: Diamonds on Saturday night, went out for a Sunday afternoon.
- 2:40Speaker 2: In fact, it actually was. I don't know where I am,
- 2:42Speaker 2: what day it is. They went out. They had a
- 2:44Speaker 2: game plan. Thirty-five seconds later, it all had to change.
- 2:46Speaker 2: So you've got to– you love Matthew, but you've got
- 2:49Speaker 2: to have a plan B.
- 2:49Speaker 3: You've got to have– and, you know, one of the
- 2:51Speaker 3: great pieces of advice I got from a woman who's
- 2:53Speaker 3: a chair of a board who I greatly respect when
- 2:55Speaker 3: I became chair– we've had a number of conversations over
- 2:59Speaker 3: the last few years and she said to me recently,
- 3:01Speaker 3: who's in your envelope? I said, what do you mean?
- 3:03Speaker 1: She said, well, if.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Is that what the kids are calling it these days?
- 3:09Speaker 3: Who's in your envelope? And what she was saying was,
- 3:12Speaker 3: like it's a metaphorical envelope, but if something happens to
- 3:16Speaker 3: your CEO or the chair, who's in the envelope? What's
- 3:20Speaker 3: the name who will step in, right? So I always
- 3:24Speaker 3: thought that like, Coxie was in my envelope, but then
- 3:27Speaker 3: I see that headline this morning.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Please don't make me step in and save Netball Australia.
- 3:30Speaker 3: No. No, no.
- 3:31Speaker 2: This is like, you know. We get another envelope.
- 3:34Speaker 3: The social one, yeah. Yeah, this is my social, like,
- 3:37Speaker 3: you know, relationship thing, right? So, you know, if something
- 3:40Speaker 3: happens and then I'm like, I look at that and
- 3:42Speaker 3: I'm like, oh, Kath and Kim, they're enveloped and I
- 3:45Speaker 3: wasn't even told.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Well, let me put your mind at ease. She made
- 3:49Speaker 1: the mistake of also texting me on the group chat
- 3:52Speaker 1: that Kat Tuavite is in. Her response was, RIP, bitches.
- 3:57Speaker 3: And then she ended up going on social media. So
- 4:02Speaker 3: you've died. Yeah, apparently.
- 4:04Speaker 1: I don't know. So to clarify, because it's actually starting
- 4:08Speaker 1: to annoy me, for those of you playing at home,
- 4:11Speaker 1: the broadcast deal with Fox has finished. So every one
- 4:15Speaker 1: of us that's done the netball with Fox has finished.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Oh, hang on. Don't you do– What about the Wednesday night?
- 4:22Speaker 2: No, do you know she's not doing Wednesday night's game?
- 4:25Speaker 1: No, I'm not doing Wednesday.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Catherine's done her last Fox.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Why not?
- 4:28Speaker 1: Oh, because they're using the Melbourne team.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Oh, okay.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Which makes sense. So Kat will be the only one
- 4:33Speaker 1: that goes down there, but it will be Bianca and
- 4:35Speaker 1: Kelsey as well. But it just means that we've finished
- 4:39Speaker 1: with Fox.
- 4:41Speaker 3: I may.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Get a job with Nine. I don't know that yet.
- 4:44Speaker 1: We haven't had those conversations. We're still with Fox at
- 4:47Speaker 1: this point in time. So everybody, it's not, you know,
- 4:51Speaker 1: even poor M. Beaton put her fabulous newsletter out. We
- 4:55Speaker 1: haven't spoken about that. Unbeaten. M. Beaton's thing is unreal.
- 5:00Speaker 1: But she even posted something this morning that included the
- 5:02Speaker 1: fact that I had my last game and everybody came
- 5:05Speaker 1: back at her and she's like, oh, my God, okay,
- 5:07Speaker 1: I didn't word that well.
- 5:08Speaker 2: All right, blah, blah, blah.
- 5:09Speaker 3: I did see, though, that there is a petition to get.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Guests from Channel 9.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Channel 9, dribblers are coming for you. There's a petition. Anyway, so, yes,
- 5:19Speaker 1: not dead.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Not retiring. Oh, I'm just so relieved.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Tired, but yeah.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Not retired, just tired.
- 5:26Speaker 2: We did, we had the most amazing event on Saturday night.
- 5:30Speaker 3: So fun.
- 5:31Speaker 2: We do this after every event. We say that was wild.
- 5:34Speaker 2: It was so much fun but so much love in
- 5:37Speaker 2: the room. It was just, it was wonderful. We are
- 5:39Speaker 2: wearing the necklaces. We're wearing someone else's. We've eaten ours, Daniel.
- 5:45Speaker 2: But lovely dribbler Daniel from New Zealand. Made us these.
- 5:49Speaker 2: He is of Tongan heritage and he presented us with
- 5:52Speaker 2: these on stage and we have a number of others
- 5:55Speaker 2: for other people who I'm having to track down.
- 5:57Speaker 1: So I can't open this? Is that what you're saying?
- 5:59Speaker 1: Is this someone else's?
- 6:00Speaker 3: Someone else. Well, can I say I would have mine
- 6:03Speaker 3: on but I made the mistake of giving mine to
- 6:05Speaker 3: my children and I don't know if they even took
- 6:09Speaker 3: the plastic off before they inhaled the chocolate.
- 6:11Speaker 2: But such a gorgeous gift. Thank you. So lovely. And
- 6:14Speaker 2: such a generous heart. But that was, you know, everybody
- 6:17Speaker 2: on Saturday night. And, you know, can we just again
- 6:20Speaker 2: say to our wonderful dribblers, Nikki and Sharon, thank Such givers.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Thank you so much for everything that you do for
- 6:29Speaker 2: No Dribble. They ran the door for us. They were
- 6:31Speaker 2: dealing with tech issues. And this is quite funny. My
- 6:34Speaker 2: poor husband, at the end of the night, was trying
- 6:36Speaker 2: to queue up the music. We had it all in rehearsal.
- 6:38Speaker 2: When I say rehearsal, the 10 minutes before everyone arrives
- 6:41Speaker 2: when we check everything. But it was all good to
- 6:43Speaker 2: go and we were playing a song right at the
- 6:46Speaker 2: end as we traditionally do to finish and this one.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Was a winner.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Jessie's Girl.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Jessie's Girl.
- 6:51Speaker 2: And because of the microphone issues earlier in the night,
- 6:54Speaker 2: the tech guys from the venue had come down and
- 6:57Speaker 2: just turned off the connection so Pete couldn't get it going.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Oh, no.
- 7:01Speaker 2: We're standing there on stage, he's like, I'm out of ideas.
- 7:05Speaker 2: And so Liz gets it up on her phone on Spotify.
- 7:09Speaker 2: I hold it up to the microphone and we all
- 7:11Speaker 2: sing Jessie's Girl.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Sensational.
- 7:14Speaker 2: This is the slick operation that is going on.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Slick.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Imagine this podcast with alcohol. That's the level of professionalism.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Can I just tell you, though, I mean, if you've
- 7:27Speaker 1: been to one of our events, they get a little loose.
- 7:30Speaker 1: We love to have fun and we love to tell
- 7:32Speaker 1: stories that are completely inappropriate and that's why you come
- 7:35Speaker 1: to them because we don't often share them on the podcast.
- 7:38Speaker 1: But I looked out into the sea of people who,
- 7:42Speaker 1: And I see Harper's potential new 11s rep coach. Now,
- 7:50Speaker 1: I don't for one minute think that that's helpful. That's
- 7:54Speaker 1: probably not.
- 7:55Speaker 2: I don't think you want to tell Harper about this
- 7:57Speaker 2: connection because it's, you know, she's not going to like it.
- 8:03Speaker 3: It's not good.
- 8:04Speaker 1: So she knows all this stuff about me now. Do
- 8:06Speaker 1: you want that parent? No. Do you want that parent
- 8:09Speaker 1: in your group of kids? I don't think so.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Well, she might not want you near the other children.
- 8:14Speaker 3: I think that's fair enough. But I think when you're
- 8:16Speaker 3: a rep coach, I would imagine, that you want to
- 8:18Speaker 3: make sure you get a good group of parents. So
- 8:20Speaker 3: the parents in our rep team, we love each other
- 8:24Speaker 3: a little too much. Now that we've gone from 15s
- 8:27Speaker 3: to 17s, there's going to have to be some who
- 8:29Speaker 3: miss out and don't make it because you combine in
- 8:31Speaker 3: two age groups.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Oh, no.
- 8:33Speaker 3: And there's one particular, one set of parents who I
- 8:36Speaker 3: adore who– their daughter decided not to trial because she
- 8:40Speaker 3: thought she wasn't much of a chance. But I said
- 8:42Speaker 3: to them, can you guys still please come to state champs?
- 8:45Speaker 3: And they're thinking about it. And that is the commitment
- 8:47Speaker 3: you want from your parents.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Well, you're a team, right?
- 8:50Speaker 3: Yes, we're a team, regardless of what the children do. Yeah.
- 8:54Speaker 1: And meanwhile, I noticed you just had a sip from
- 8:56Speaker 1: your lovely wine glass.
- 8:57Speaker 2: My beautiful hand-painted glass that one of the dribblers brought
- 9:00Speaker 2: for us. So this is from Florence, F-L-O-R-E-N-S-E. And we
- 9:06Speaker 2: got one each and mine's got beautiful daisies on it
- 9:09Speaker 2: and no dribble written down there. And I will take
- 9:12Speaker 2: that tag off tonight, but I wanted to leave it
- 9:15Speaker 2: on for here. And I just, it was such a,
- 9:17Speaker 2: such a beautiful gift. Thank you very much. I think
- 9:20Speaker 2: I didn't actually make this dribbler. Nikki passed this on
- 9:23Speaker 2: to me. You guys both, she's from Tamworth.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Yes. Yes. She's from Tamworth and drove down and bought
- 9:29Speaker 3: the glasses down and I had to leave my bag
- 9:32Speaker 3: at the hotel yesterday so I didn't have to check
- 9:35Speaker 3: it in at an after-pay arena. And when I left
- 9:38Speaker 3: it there, I left it with specific instructions that I
- 9:41Speaker 3: wanted the bag hung up. I didn't want it sitting
- 9:43Speaker 3: on the ground because there was a very precious glass
- 9:45Speaker 3: in it. So I'm pleased to say it made it home. Oh, good.
- 9:48Speaker 3: Thank you for those. They're beautiful. I was saving mine
- 9:50Speaker 3: for Friday. He's no dribbler because, yeah, Friday, you want
- 9:52Speaker 3: to kick off your wine drinking early. Friday?
- 9:55Speaker 1: Why are we waiting until Friday?
- 9:57Speaker 2: Well, it's just sparkling water in it at this stage.
- 10:01Speaker 2: But I tell you what, Liz, one of the things
- 10:03Speaker 2: that has made me laugh so much, I had a
- 10:04Speaker 2: meeting last week. And in the briefing meeting earlier on,
- 10:09Speaker 2: we were talking about the structure of the podcast and
- 10:13Speaker 2: the guy Peter there, who is a keen dribbler and
- 10:16Speaker 2: was a mad Giants fan for a long time, said,
- 10:18Speaker 2: sometimes I just want you guys to get to the netball,
- 10:20Speaker 2: particularly like during signing season. And the third guy in
- 10:22Speaker 2: the meeting was not netball literate yet. We're going to
- 10:26Speaker 2: get him. But then he was sort of talking about, oh,
- 10:28Speaker 2: just all the stuff about during signings. And he said,
- 10:31Speaker 2: do you get a whole lot from Liz. I said, no,
- 10:35Speaker 2: by the time I hear something from Liz Ellis, I
- 10:37Speaker 2: have received it from 22 other sources first and it
- 10:42Speaker 2: has been contradicted and we've moved on and then Liz
- 10:45Speaker 2: will have something for it.
- 10:46Speaker 1: And then.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Saturday night at the event.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Oh, so funny.
- 10:50Speaker 1: So funny. I pissed myself. A little bit of wee
- 10:54Speaker 1: came out of everything on Sunday morning.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Well, at the time it felt very exciting, didn't it?
- 10:58Speaker 1: It did, didn't it?
- 10:59Speaker 2: Because Liz said to everyone in the room, big secret,
- 11:02Speaker 2: I can't be telling you this, but tomorrow at half
- 11:06Speaker 2: time the premiere.
- 11:09Speaker 1: No, you didn't even say who was going to be there.
- 11:10Speaker 3: I didn't even say the premiere.
- 11:11Speaker 2: You said, we're going to announce the location of the
- 11:14Speaker 2: Super Netball Grand Final next week. So, you know, that's
- 11:18Speaker 2: happening at halftime, 8am Sunday morning.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Socials are flooded with.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Super Netball Grand Finals in Sydney next year.
- 11:29Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
- 11:29Speaker 1: So our group chat, I jumped straight on and I'm like, oh, shit,
- 11:32Speaker 1: did they go early? Was it a mistake?
- 11:34Speaker 2: That's what I thought. And what did I say to you?
- 11:36Speaker 1: No, I think I went late. Which is how I.
- 11:43Speaker 3: Protect my integrity. I go away with the information.
- 11:46Speaker 2: I like that. You do not traffic in gossip at all.
- 11:50Speaker 2: It's like, just tell me the definite decisions and I
- 11:53Speaker 2: will keep them secret until they can be announced. So
- 11:57Speaker 2: you don't have to keep in your mind what's been
- 11:59Speaker 2: told and what hasn't. And look, to be fair... We've
- 12:02Speaker 2: all had a diet of, you know, Saturday night we
- 12:05Speaker 2: were texting each other afterwards, what did everyone have for dinner?
- 12:08Speaker 2: We had the beef jerky from our friends at Beach
- 12:10Speaker 2: Jerky and the chocolate from our necklaces. So, you know,
- 12:13Speaker 2: this is not an under-match.
- 12:14Speaker 3: I have a question for any nutritionists who listen to
- 12:17Speaker 3: this podcast. So that Beach Jerky comes in a number
- 12:19Speaker 3: of different flavours. They're all different colours. There's red and
- 12:22Speaker 3: blue and yellow.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Yep.
- 12:23Speaker 3: Teriyaki, honey soy.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Is that the flavour?
- 12:28Speaker 3: Have I managed to get like a good round meal
- 12:30Speaker 3: full of all the food groups?
- 12:31Speaker 2: Have you eaten the rainbow? Because that's what we're meant
- 12:33Speaker 2: to do, right?
- 12:35Speaker 1: Yeah. We just finished a bag. We polished off. What
- 12:37Speaker 1: flavour was that? Lime and cracked pepper.
- 12:39Speaker 2: That's the lime and cracked pepper. But that was delicious.
- 12:42Speaker 2: We gave away a bunch of that on Saturday. But
- 12:44Speaker 2: thank you to everyone who came along on Saturday night.
- 12:48Speaker 2: We appreciate you supporting the podcast through coming to the
- 12:50Speaker 2: live events and sharing buying the merch. I did have
- 12:52Speaker 2: a question on Saturday night, where can we buy the merch?
- 12:54Speaker 2: You just go to nodribble.com.au and there is a link there.
- 12:57Speaker 2: And we do have a special summer edition piece of
- 13:02Speaker 2: merch that will drop at some stage soon. So that
- 13:04Speaker 2: will be limited edition. But yes, it was so much fun.
- 13:07Speaker 2: And you guys, for the very first time, met our
- 13:10Speaker 2: lovely producer, Alex.
- 13:12Speaker 3: Yes.
- 13:14Speaker 1: She is the ultimate Superman though, isn't she? Because we
- 13:16Speaker 1: always see her on the screen here with her glasses on.
- 13:19Speaker 1: When she rocked up, she was talking to me the
- 13:21Speaker 1: other night and I'm like, I don't know who this
- 13:22Speaker 1: person is.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Do you know what? I met her and I'm like,
- 13:28Speaker 3: Oh my God, you're really hot. Like I didn't mean
- 13:30Speaker 3: that as if like, you know, you're not hot when
- 13:32Speaker 3: we see you, but she's in a tiny little box
- 13:34Speaker 3: at the top of that screen with the big glasses
- 13:36Speaker 3: and a headphone. And I was sort of with all
- 13:37Speaker 3: that beautiful hair and I'm like, Oh, you're smoking. Nice work. Yeah.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Oh, God.
- 13:43Speaker 2: So that was very lovely. And we also had Mandy,
- 13:45Speaker 2: our original producer, who came along. We had a lot
- 13:48Speaker 2: of lovely guests. We had Megan Anderson. We had Julie Fitzgerald.
- 13:52Speaker 2: And we had Kat and her four sisters.
- 13:55Speaker 3: Yes. So I think we should, can we just do
- 13:57Speaker 3: a quick brainstorm on, I was looking at Kat Tuovati
- 14:02Speaker 3: or Kat Latu, as she was formerly known, and the four,
- 14:04Speaker 3: the five Latu siblings all together. So she came along
- 14:07Speaker 3: with her four beautiful sisters.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Yes.
- 14:09Speaker 3: What would you call, what's a collective noun for a
- 14:12Speaker 3: group of Latus?
- 14:14Speaker 2: Oh, it's a lot. A party of Latus.
- 14:16Speaker 3: A party's a good one. I like that.
- 14:17Speaker 1: I was thinking the Venga bus.
- 14:19Speaker 2: The Venga bus of Latus.
- 14:22Speaker 3: I was thinking a magnificence, but I think a Venga
- 14:25Speaker 3: bus or a party of Latus. A party of Latus.
- 14:27Speaker 3: I like that. Yes.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Yeah. They are so much fun though, aren't they? And
- 14:32Speaker 1: they did call me over for a photo because they said,
- 14:34Speaker 1: don't tell her, but you are actually our favourite Catherine.
- 14:39Speaker 1: So at that point we all looked in the direction
- 14:41Speaker 1: of other Kat and gave her the bird collectively.
- 14:45Speaker 3: Oh, nice. You are so classy. Stay classy. I know.
- 14:48Speaker 1: I know.
- 14:48Speaker 2: I did ask at one stage, so we had Julie
- 14:52Speaker 2: and Megan and you two and Kat up on stage
- 14:55Speaker 2: and I got off stage because we had quite a
- 14:57Speaker 2: small stage and only three microphones. But I did rush
- 15:01Speaker 2: up and say, take a photo of me, please, Dribblers,
- 15:03Speaker 2: with all of these people. Every photo of... me standing
- 15:08Speaker 2: next to Kat Latu. The first two or three of
- 15:11Speaker 2: them I thought, that was when I was still standing
- 15:13Speaker 2: down beside the stage. It's like, no, I'm standing on
- 15:16Speaker 2: my feet next to her. Like, man, she's taller than
- 15:21Speaker 2: you two. I know. Easily.
- 15:23Speaker 1: And this is why when Liz first played her, ended
- 15:25Speaker 1: up on your arse, didn't you? And you sent a third.
- 15:28Speaker 3: More than my arse, man. Anyway, that's the story for
- 15:30Speaker 3: Summer Series.
- 15:32Speaker 1: But she's such a good fit for us, isn't she?
- 15:34Speaker 1: Because she's just a little off centre. We love that
- 15:36Speaker 1: at the table.
- 15:37Speaker 2: And it was her 40th birthday on Sunday. So thank you,
- 15:41Speaker 2: Kat and the two girls for coming along and getting
- 15:45Speaker 2: cracking with that. But we should take a little break.
- 15:48Speaker 2: I don't know if you know, there was a game
- 15:50Speaker 2: of netball that was played yesterday. So we should come
- 15:52Speaker 2: back and talk about that.
- 15:53Speaker 1: I do have to get the buzz bar out of here.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Yeah, do that.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Let's have a chocolate.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Okay, so it's Monday. You know that. We record on
- 16:11Speaker 2: a Monday. There is still one more test to go
- 16:14Speaker 2: in the Constellation Cup, but the Constellation Cup is going
- 16:17Speaker 2: back to New Zealand. They have convincingly won the series
- 16:22Speaker 2: 3-0 maybe. Well, it's 3-0 at this stage. There's still
- 16:26Speaker 2: a game to play. Might be 4-0, might be 3-1.
- 16:29Speaker 2: But the Ferns have won it and won it decisively. Yesterday,
- 16:35Speaker 2: I thought, was a sensational game. I loved it. I
- 16:39Speaker 2: loved it from the very first second. It was great
- 16:43Speaker 2: to see Georgie Hoare just run out with a goal-attack
- 16:45Speaker 2: bib and I thought, this is amazing, what's going to
- 16:48Speaker 2: happen here? And then 35 seconds in, something happened with
- 16:51Speaker 2: poor old Kate Maloney's finger after.
- 16:53Speaker 1: The first centre-pass. The ultimate tease, wasn't it?
- 16:56Speaker 2: Yeah, and then the Diamonds had to... So Liz Watson
- 17:00Speaker 2: had to change from wing attack to centre. Georgie had
- 17:03Speaker 2: to go from goal attack to wing attack. Sophie Dwyer,
- 17:07Speaker 2: it's like, you're on, girl. It's like, well, hang on,
- 17:09Speaker 2: I thought I had a moment to catch my breath.
- 17:11Speaker 2: But I thought they pivoted magnificently. I was so proud
- 17:14Speaker 2: of them. It was so exciting. And it was really
- 17:17Speaker 2: nice to see. I loved seeing Amy Parmenter start. I
- 17:24Speaker 2: took so much out of yesterday's game. Sophie Garbin came out.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Like a woman possessed. That is my goal circle.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Well, the ponytail. Did you notice it was different?
- 17:35Speaker 3: Yes.
- 17:36Speaker 1: It was out.
- 17:36Speaker 3: Yeah. Yes, but then it went up at half time.
- 17:38Speaker 2: It went back on.
- 17:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Oh, okay. Oh, interesting. But it was so nice. I
- 17:43Speaker 1: actually said to Stacey Marinkovic in the interview post-game that
- 17:46Speaker 1: the tease of the starting seven that we didn't get
- 17:50Speaker 1: to see because of the change was was like it
- 17:52Speaker 1: was a good one. Can we please see it in Melbourne?
- 17:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:55Speaker 1: So fingers crossed there will be something else that happens
- 17:57Speaker 1: in Melbourne. What about Kate Maloney though? Is she the
- 17:59Speaker 1: toughest person on the planet?
- 18:01Speaker 3: Toughest.
- 18:01Speaker 1: So she had 12 stitches in the first finger that
- 18:05Speaker 1: had to be restitched after the first game because they popped.
- 18:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:09Speaker 1: Then yesterday dislocated a finger on the same hand, not
- 18:12Speaker 1: that finger, different finger, gets it strapped up and then
- 18:15Speaker 1: still comes back and plays with two bunged fingers.
- 18:19Speaker 3: And was still unbelievable. She's got ten fingers at work.
- 18:23Speaker 1: I know.
- 18:23Speaker 3: She's going to be unstoppable.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Well, yes, and there's a good chat that we might
- 18:27Speaker 1: have on Friday around because it is going to be
- 18:29Speaker 1: the Netball Australia Awards dinner on Friday as well and
- 18:32Speaker 1: who might be in the running for the Lizella's Diamond.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Speaking of, you know, players having great series and things.
- 18:40Speaker 2: And she probably won't be in the running because she
- 18:42Speaker 2: didn't play the Commonwealth Games and the test series at
- 18:47Speaker 2: the beginning of the year. But Jessie Grenvold at the
- 18:51Speaker 2: beginning of this year was effectively like a training partner
- 18:56Speaker 2: for the Mavs.
- 18:56Speaker 1: She was the third defender.
- 18:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Tara Hinchcliffe goes down. Jessie steps in, has a magnificent season.
- 19:04Speaker 2: She's into the diamonds, fringe diamond. Oh, no, starting seven.
- 19:09Speaker 3: Like, whoa.
- 19:11Speaker 1: And then MVP yesterday. Okay.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Of course she was. Yes, of course she was.
- 19:16Speaker 3: She was outstanding.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Wasn't she?
- 19:19Speaker 3: You know what I love about her is her footwork. So,
- 19:22Speaker 3: you know, I think I've said this before, we love
- 19:24Speaker 3: Ted Lasso in our house and, you know, when Daddy
- 19:27Speaker 3: says football is life, we say footwork is life, right?
- 19:30Speaker 3: And we say it to the kids so often that
- 19:32Speaker 3: they're almost sick of it. It's stopped being funny quite
- 19:35Speaker 3: some time ago. I don't think they're almost.
- 19:37Speaker 2: I bet they're already sick of it.
- 19:38Speaker 1: I reckon that was a weekend.
- 19:40Speaker 3: You gave them that long. Anyway. At one point yesterday,
- 19:45Speaker 3: I thought, I'm going to sit and just watch Jessie's
- 19:47Speaker 3: footwork for five minutes. She has no right to have
- 19:52Speaker 3: footwork that good for someone that young and without much experience.
- 19:55Speaker 3: She has no right.
- 19:57Speaker 1: But Liz– She gets herself.
- 19:59Speaker 3: Into positions that she's not experienced enough to do, yet
- 20:02Speaker 3: she's doing it.
- 20:03Speaker 1: But it's not even that right. Like it's the footwork
- 20:05Speaker 1: is one thing, but then the boom elevation that is
- 20:09Speaker 1: so good off the back of it.
- 20:12Speaker 2: Her relative height compared to Grace Wecky, you go, oh,
- 20:15Speaker 2: she's quite short. But she can throw. She has long
- 20:19Speaker 2: arms and a great elevation and just bam.
- 20:21Speaker 3: And she's built strong, right? She's got a body that's
- 20:24Speaker 3: not going to get pushed around and pushed off things.
- 20:26Speaker 1: No.
- 20:27Speaker 3: I am fangirling her so hard. Loved watching her play yesterday.
- 20:31Speaker 3: I thought Courtney did a good job out in front
- 20:35Speaker 3: of her.
- 20:36Speaker 2: I did too, yeah.
- 20:37Speaker 3: And I thought Sarah Cloud did a good job when
- 20:38Speaker 3: she came on out in front of her as well.
- 20:40Speaker 3: So I think that gives Australia so many options when
- 20:43Speaker 3: we get Jo Weston back, when Sunday Ariane comes back in.
- 20:47Speaker 3: That's going to be a really– like that to me
- 20:49Speaker 3: is where the selection, one of the big selection headaches
- 20:51Speaker 3: will be.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Well, yeah, can I put you on the spot and
- 20:53Speaker 1: ask you then?
- 20:54Speaker 3: Right now?
- 20:55Speaker 1: Yep. If Sunday and Joe are back, do you take
- 20:58Speaker 1: them both?
- 21:01Speaker 3: That's a good question.
- 21:02Speaker 1: Because we've got Tilly Garrett as a specialist goal defence.
- 21:05Speaker 3: That's it at the moment. It depends what you do.
- 21:09Speaker 3: If they're both fit, that gives you a massive headache
- 21:13Speaker 3: because you've got three players who can play goal defence, goalkeeper,
- 21:18Speaker 3: and then you've got three players who can play goal defence,
- 21:20Speaker 3: wing defence. So it depends what you do with your midcourt, like,
- 21:24Speaker 3: And this is I'd hate to be a selector because
- 21:26Speaker 3: it's like putting together this constantly shifting sort of jigsaw puzzle.
- 21:31Speaker 3: Like it's not like you go, okay, we're going to
- 21:33Speaker 3: have four defenders, four midcourt and four shooters. You've got
- 21:37Speaker 3: defenders who can play in one of the midcourt positions
- 21:39Speaker 3: and you've got Georgie Horges who can swing across both.
- 21:42Speaker 3: So you have lots and lots. And the balance is
- 21:45Speaker 3: you have lots and lots of sort of options and
- 21:48Speaker 3: like you've got an agile sort of team. But you
- 21:50Speaker 3: have to find the balance to make sure you've got agility,
- 21:53Speaker 3: but you've also got specialists in each position. And I
- 21:57Speaker 3: think one of the critical things in any major event,
- 22:00Speaker 3: World Cup, CONCUP, whatever it is, you've got to have
- 22:02Speaker 3: a specialist wing defence. And it's funny, we do laugh
- 22:05Speaker 3: about wing defenders at social netball. You put like maybe....
- 22:10Speaker 2: Carolyn.
- 22:11Speaker 3: Carolyn there. And then... At almost reverses, right? Oh, yeah.
- 22:15Speaker 3: You absolutely need your best athlete in wing defence internationally
- 22:18Speaker 3: because they provide so much protection for your goalkeeper and
- 22:23Speaker 3: your goal defence. And I think that that– it's almost
- 22:25Speaker 3: like you have to– the selectors, I think, probably need
- 22:28Speaker 3: to look at that wing defence position first and make
- 22:32Speaker 3: a decision there and then everything then fits in around that,
- 22:35Speaker 3: which is sort of not something that you think about
- 22:38Speaker 3: too often because, you know, wing defence is important.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Do you think Tilly Garrett's decision to move to the
- 22:43Speaker 1: Swifts to play with Sarah Clow then instead of the
- 22:46Speaker 1: Jamaican defence end is a smart one? Like it's a
- 22:49Speaker 1: big year, right?
- 22:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that's really smart, right? And I also
- 22:51Speaker 3: think going to the Swifts, she'll get more court time.
- 22:54Speaker 3: I think if you want to play in the World Cup,
- 22:56Speaker 3: you've got to be first selected in your team. You've
- 22:59Speaker 3: got to have that court time under pressure. And I
- 23:02Speaker 3: reckon this year.
- 23:04Speaker 3: I feel like we'll see a bolter and I feel
- 23:07Speaker 3: like we'll see one of the young under 21s players.
- 23:09Speaker 3: I don't know which one from the world cup stand up.
- 23:12Speaker 3: I don't know. I just have a sense that I
- 23:14Speaker 3: reckon there'll be someone who really surprises us into the
- 23:17Speaker 3: next season, but.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Are you talking specifically at the defence end?
- 23:21Speaker 1: No, no, I'm talking– there's no room in the defence end.
- 23:23Speaker 2: No, there's no room in the shooting circle.
- 23:26Speaker 3: Well, there's not anywhere.
- 23:27Speaker 2: We had five shooters named for the weekend. But, you know,
- 23:31Speaker 2: it's interesting. This is interesting for Amy Parmenter who I
- 23:34Speaker 2: thought was sensational yesterday.
- 23:36Speaker 3: I reckon that's the best game I've seen her play
- 23:38Speaker 3: for the Diamonds.
- 23:38Speaker 2: Absolutely. I thought she was so good. And honestly, you
- 23:41Speaker 2: look at it, no one loves playing netball as much
- 23:43Speaker 2: as Amy Parmenter. She just looks like she's having the
- 23:46Speaker 2: best time always. But she doesn't have the versatility of
- 23:49Speaker 2: Matilda Garrett, does she? No. She probably is only a
- 23:54Speaker 2: centre court player. So, yeah, interesting.
- 23:57Speaker 1: I'm glad I'm not a selector. I think we should
- 23:59Speaker 1: all be glad I'm not a selector. We are.
- 24:03Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Otherwise we'd have Annie Sargent hosting this podcast.
- 24:06Speaker 2: The diamonds will be based on who's a good hand.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Just all centre quarters. Oh, yeah, but across the whole
- 24:15Speaker 2: court I was– thrilled with what I saw. I'm so
- 24:17Speaker 2: I'm devastated for them that they didn't get the win
- 24:19Speaker 2: because I just, I felt like, Oh God, it would
- 24:23Speaker 2: have been great for you to be rewarded with that
- 24:25Speaker 2: game with the win, but love seeing Sophie Dwyer have
- 24:29Speaker 2: some more time there. And you know, she is She
- 24:32Speaker 2: is young. She needs more time.
- 24:34Speaker 1: I liked those two together. It was just solid and reliable.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Like you don't need the speed. You just need to
- 24:39Speaker 1: be smart. And I reckon they did that. The big
- 24:43Speaker 1: question now is how is game four managed?
- 24:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:46Speaker 1: Because it's a dead rubber. Like New Zealand, they'd want
- 24:49Speaker 1: to win the whole thing, sure, but it's also an
- 24:50Speaker 1: opportunity for them to maybe put some players on that
- 24:53Speaker 1: haven't played.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Isn't it also the opportunity for them to become outright
- 24:57Speaker 2: world number one? Are we not equal world number one now?
- 25:00Speaker 1: Yeah, look, we can't get a clear answer on that.
- 25:03Speaker 1: From my understanding... Have you asked, Daryl? Well, I've spoken
- 25:08Speaker 1: to Todd Miller, who is the go-to of the stats.
- 25:11Speaker 1: My understanding is the Netball Federation likes to release it
- 25:14Speaker 1: once a year because if you were... Chopping changing it
- 25:18Speaker 1: every time countries had test matches and you were answering
- 25:21Speaker 1: their questions about, oh, where do we sit now and
- 25:23Speaker 1: what is it? So they don't like to, but the
- 25:25Speaker 1: general understanding is yes, if New Zealand win it, they
- 25:29Speaker 1: will go to number one. Yeah, okay.
- 25:32Speaker 2: Or maybe we should just squeeze in an extra test
- 25:34Speaker 2: match then.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Yes, we should. I mean, yeah, it's not as important
- 25:39Speaker 1: to hang on to that as it is to plan
- 25:41Speaker 1: ahead for a World Cup, by my opinion, is it?
- 25:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:45Speaker 2: And there are a lot of those Ferns players, well,
- 25:48Speaker 2: not a lot, but, you know, given the size of
- 25:50Speaker 2: the bench, there's a number of them. So Kara Stithe
- 25:52Speaker 2: has not been on at all.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Mason hasn't been on.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Kara Mason has not been on at all. So, you know,
- 25:58Speaker 2: there's a few of those who you would think, well,
- 26:01Speaker 2: this would be a really good opportunity to at least
- 26:03Speaker 2: give them a run. I keep looking at Kara Stithe.
- 26:06Speaker 2: It's going to be terrible when she's at the Vixens
- 26:07Speaker 2: next year with Jo Weston because every time I look
- 26:09Speaker 2: at her I think, what's Jo Weston wearing a silver
- 26:11Speaker 2: Ferns uniform for?
- 26:12Speaker 3: It's just a.
- 26:14Speaker 2: tall with the blonde ponytail but yes it was your
- 26:17Speaker 2: last game that you've called with uh with fox did
- 26:20Speaker 2: you have a nice time was it joyful.
- 26:22Speaker 1: It was good fun and it's i mean it's always
- 26:23Speaker 1: fun working with kat and kim because they just you
- 26:26Speaker 1: can have fun yeah you can enjoy the game you
- 26:28Speaker 1: can have a little bit of fun with the call
- 26:30Speaker 1: and stuff and it was it's just love it's just
- 26:32Speaker 1: it's the best job in the world it is the
- 26:35Speaker 1: best job in the world best seats in the house
- 26:38Speaker 1: the best game Like just so much fun. And we
- 26:42Speaker 1: don't have to sit there and listen to the people
- 26:45Speaker 1: in the crowd with their opinions, which I believe you were.
- 26:48Speaker 2: A lot of people, a lot of experts, a lot
- 26:54Speaker 2: of endless, endless negative commentary about what the umpire's call was.
- 26:59Speaker 2: It's like, I don't know. I'm watching exactly the same
- 27:02Speaker 2: thing as you from a row or two in front
- 27:05Speaker 2: of you. I can't see. I actually thought the umpiring
- 27:08Speaker 2: was really good yesterday. I think that we don't have
- 27:14Speaker 2: a bunker. The decision gets made, we move on. So
- 27:19Speaker 2: you're not going to like all of them and you're
- 27:21Speaker 2: particularly not going to like them more when they're going
- 27:24Speaker 2: against your team.
- 27:25Speaker 3: But Oh, God.
- 27:27Speaker 2: I don't know why you go if you hate it
- 27:29Speaker 2: that much. Just sit there and moan about everything.
- 27:33Speaker 3: Well, from my seats, I sat next to somebody who
- 27:37Speaker 3: was at their first ever elite netball game and is
- 27:41Speaker 3: now hooked.
- 27:42Speaker 2: The Premier.
- 27:43Speaker 3: Can't wait to come back.
- 27:44Speaker 1: That was his first game.
- 27:45Speaker 3: First game.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Wow.
- 27:46Speaker 3: Yeah, was absolutely like absolutely. mesmerised, asking me about all
- 27:51Speaker 3: the players. Like he was so interested from the get-go.
- 27:55Speaker 3: He sat down and he's like, right, who are the superstars?
- 27:59Speaker 3: Who does what? He's got boys. He's never.
- 28:02Speaker 2: I did give him a netball dad hat, a mad, mad,
- 28:06Speaker 2: mad netball dad hat when I got the Super Netball
- 28:13Speaker 2: Grand Final for Sydney in my interview with him in May.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Yeah, well done. Yeah. But that's great, isn't it? We're
- 28:18Speaker 1: just going to gloss over that, are we? Well, I mean,
- 28:21Speaker 1: you're amazing. But I just love that you can get
- 28:24Speaker 1: someone new to a game like that.
- 28:25Speaker 3: Yeah, it's great.
- 28:26Speaker 1: And they respond like that. That's amazing.
- 28:28Speaker 3: Yeah, and he was like so into it. He had
- 28:30Speaker 3: to leave at halftime because he had something else on. But,
- 28:33Speaker 3: I mean, the poor thing, that was his fifth appointment,
- 28:36Speaker 3: his fifth event yesterday by the time he got to
- 28:38Speaker 3: the netball.
- 28:38Speaker 2: They're big jobs.
- 28:39Speaker 3: Yeah, the New South Wales election is next year, so
- 28:42Speaker 3: you just get the sense that they're in election mode.
- 28:44Speaker 3: But he just loved it. And a special shout-out actually to–
- 28:50Speaker 3: David Harris, who is a minister in the New South
- 28:52Speaker 3: Wales government, who loves netball. He's a member of the Swifts,
- 28:58Speaker 3: goes to every game. He spoke at the One Year
- 29:01Speaker 3: To Go event. Kathy, you were there. I've never heard
- 29:04Speaker 3: anyone who's not a netball-like player, who hasn't played at
- 29:07Speaker 3: an elite level, speak so passionately and eloquently about the game.
- 29:11Speaker 3: He got up and spoke and I thought, I can't
- 29:14Speaker 3: believe I have to follow him because he just absolutely
- 29:17Speaker 3: nailed it. Anyway, he was so excited to be there yesterday,
- 29:19Speaker 3: him and his beautiful wife, Sherelle, which is an excellent
- 29:22Speaker 3: netball name, obviously.
- 29:23Speaker 1: It's a great netball name.
- 29:24Speaker 3: Yep. So, like, it's just so good now that we've
- 29:27Speaker 3: got this cohort of people who are going yep, this
- 29:31Speaker 3: is it, this is the sport. And, you know, if
- 29:33Speaker 3: you looked at the Premier's sort of Facebook page yesterday
- 29:36Speaker 3: or Instagram page, it was like we've underinvested in netball
- 29:39Speaker 3: for too long and we're here now. And I'm like, yep, great. Amazing.
- 29:43Speaker 2: I find this every single time I bring someone to
- 29:47Speaker 2: a game of Super Netball or a test, they go...
- 29:50Speaker 2: That was great. I think people who have not been
- 29:54Speaker 2: to watch a game or they think they've watched it
- 29:56Speaker 2: or they watched it years ago at a club game
- 29:59Speaker 2: or they played it at school or whatever, Every single
- 30:02Speaker 2: time I bring someone along, they go, that was a
- 30:04Speaker 2: sensational experience, you know, because they're watching what happens on court.
- 30:08Speaker 2: You're close. You're seeing this athleticism. But also, you know,
- 30:11Speaker 2: it's just a fabulous vibe. There's no, I mean, the
- 30:16Speaker 2: aggro on court's a little, the aggro in the crowd's
- 30:18Speaker 2: just a little bit more.
- 30:20Speaker 1: Was it more than on court?
- 30:21Speaker 3: Do you know what's funny? Like we're talking about the
- 30:23Speaker 3: aggro in the crowd. I went, remember, I went to
- 30:25Speaker 3: a rugby league match recently. Like netball crowds are actually
- 30:28Speaker 3: pretty good.
- 30:29Speaker 2: That's what I was saying, that there is a little
- 30:30Speaker 2: bit but it's, you know, no one feels unsafe there
- 30:34Speaker 2: or I did have an incident that I want to
- 30:36Speaker 2: talk about in our next segment though. But, yeah, we
- 30:39Speaker 2: all need to bring people to the games because, you know,
- 30:42Speaker 2: whenever I bring someone, that is their experience, they go,
- 30:45Speaker 2: this is incredible.
- 30:46Speaker 1: Some people do feel unsafe. Georgie Horges.
- 30:49Speaker 3: No, that's right.
- 30:49Speaker 1: You felt unsafe.
- 30:50Speaker 3: When it's in Sydney.
- 30:51Speaker 2: You felt unsafe. Who were you playing? Was it against
- 30:54Speaker 2: Jamaica that you felt?
- 30:55Speaker 1: Oh, stop.
- 30:56Speaker 3: We're not talking about that.
- 31:00Speaker 2: That's a reference. We've talked about this a long time
- 31:02Speaker 2: ago in the podcast. I met a couple of people
- 31:04Speaker 2: on Saturday night who are new to the podcast and
- 31:07Speaker 2: they've started at the beginning.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Yes, me too.
- 31:10Speaker 2: And they are working their way through.
- 31:12Speaker 3: Oh, God, that's a lot of dribble.
- 31:14Speaker 2: It is a lot of dribble. But it's like the
- 31:16Speaker 2: Game of Thrones people. It's like, no, I'm going to
- 31:18Speaker 2: read them in order and I've got to read all
- 31:21Speaker 2: the Harry Potter books before I watch it. But I
- 31:23Speaker 2: love it. So thank you to those people and thanks
- 31:26Speaker 2: to all of you for sharing the word on this podcast.
- 31:28Speaker 2: But let's take a little break and then I want
- 31:30Speaker 2: to tell you about my incident.
- 31:32Speaker 3: Ew.
- 31:33Speaker 1: There were incidents and accidents and hints and allegations.
- 31:38Speaker 3: Is it?
- 31:38Speaker 1: Is that Paul Simon? Yes.
- 31:40Speaker 2: Yes.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Nice. What's the actual song?
- 31:44Speaker 2: You can call me Al.
- 31:46Speaker 1: Call me Al, yeah.
- 31:47Speaker 2: I'll call you Betty. Elizabeth.
- 31:50Speaker 3: You can't call me Betty. There are a small cohort
- 31:52Speaker 3: of people who can call me Betty and you're not
- 31:54Speaker 3: in that cohort.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Is Betty an Elizabeth thing?
- 31:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:57Speaker 1: Oh, God, how on earth do you get that from that?
- 32:00Speaker 3: Beth.
- 32:00Speaker 1: Can I please call you that? No. Am I one
- 32:03Speaker 1: of them?
- 32:03Speaker 3: No.
- 32:03Speaker 2: I'm in the envelope.
- 32:04Speaker 3: No. Let me. No.
- 32:06Speaker 1: Oh, man.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Who can?
- 32:08Speaker 1: Her mum, bet you. No. Grandma.
- 32:10Speaker 2: Who is it?
- 32:12Speaker 3: I'm not going to tell you. It's got to be.
- 32:14Speaker 1: One of the oldies, like grandparent or auntie.
- 32:17Speaker 3: No, no, it's a small group of people who I
- 32:19Speaker 3: knew from a long time ago who I will let
- 32:21Speaker 3: them call me Betty, but that's it.
- 32:23Speaker 1: Is it Erin Colnane?
- 32:26Speaker 3: No, she calls me Legs.
- 32:28Speaker 1: I'm calling her Betty.
- 32:29Speaker 3: No, you're not calling me Betty. You can call me Betty.
- 32:30Speaker 3: I won't answer.
- 32:32Speaker 1: You can call me Betty.
- 32:35Speaker 3: You can't call me Betty. I will call you Cathy. Okay, fair. Oh,
- 32:41Speaker 3: them starting words. And I will call you Carolyn with
- 32:46Speaker 3: an I if you start to call me.
- 32:48Speaker 2: You know I just answered to that line.
- 32:50Speaker 3: If you would be my bodyguard, I can be your
- 32:53Speaker 3: long lost pal. I can call you Betty and Betty
- 33:00Speaker 3: when you call me.
- 33:13Speaker 2: So we gave away a couple of these gnomes on
- 33:16Speaker 2: Saturday night. Thank you, Nicky and Sharon, who picked them
- 33:18Speaker 2: up for us at Bunnings and we gave them away
- 33:21Speaker 2: to two people in the room who were my height.
- 33:24Speaker 2: But one of them, Selina, she's got it at home
- 33:27Speaker 2: and she's named it Carolyn. So I don't know how
- 33:29Speaker 2: I feel about that because she's my height but she
- 33:32Speaker 2: was wearing heels.
- 33:33Speaker 1: What about Helen with the ripped guns?
- 33:37Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 33:37Speaker 1: 68-year-old Helen went up. That was your height as well. But, oh,
- 33:40Speaker 1: my Lord, she was fit.
- 33:43Speaker 2: Anyway, let me tell you about my incident. Remember we
- 33:45Speaker 2: were talking a couple of weeks ago when Kath was
- 33:47Speaker 2: in the chair at the hairdresser and the whole foils
- 33:50Speaker 2: thing and do you say something in the moment or
- 33:52Speaker 2: do you just let it go? Well, I had one
- 33:55Speaker 2: of those moments yesterday where my daughter coached me to
- 33:58Speaker 2: let it go. So I'm sitting at the netball, Pete's
- 34:01Speaker 2: on my left, my daughter is on my right. To
- 34:04Speaker 2: her right are three empty seats and then on the
- 34:06Speaker 2: other side are groaned women. So not children or whatever. So,
- 34:11Speaker 2: you know, Priceline is the sponsor of the diamonds and
- 34:14Speaker 2: they did a giveaway in the crowd last night. So
- 34:16Speaker 2: you wouldn't know this if you weren't in the stadium,
- 34:17Speaker 2: but they did a fantastic giveaway of gift cards that
- 34:20Speaker 2: were dropped from the ceiling. $ 25, $ 50 gift cards dropped
- 34:23Speaker 2: in these little parachutes. So yeah, it was really cool.
- 34:26Speaker 2: So they were coming down, everyone was looking up and
- 34:29Speaker 2: I stayed seated because I thought, well, You can get
- 34:32Speaker 2: up and grab one if there is one. And there
- 34:34Speaker 2: was one that was coming down directly above her. And
- 34:38Speaker 2: we're looking at it. Oh, my God, it's coming down
- 34:40Speaker 2: directly above you. She had her hands to it. The
- 34:45Speaker 2: woman crossed three empty seats to reach over the child
- 34:50Speaker 2: and rip it out of her hands. So it wasn't
- 34:53Speaker 2: even like they were in neighbouring seats. So it was like, well,
- 34:56Speaker 2: whose seat was it over really? It was like she
- 34:58Speaker 2: walked across three empty seats and to grab it and
- 35:01Speaker 2: grab it from it was directly above Doddy's head. And
- 35:06Speaker 2: so I was ropeable because I just thought it's a
- 35:10Speaker 2: child and it's like, again, that whole kind of is
- 35:13Speaker 2: it the row in front, the row, you know, the
- 35:16Speaker 2: person next to you? No, it was really clear. She
- 35:18Speaker 2: had to come across a bun. So I thought I'm
- 35:22Speaker 2: really angry and I don't know what to do with
- 35:24Speaker 2: my anger but I want to be responsible. So I
- 35:28Speaker 2: took a photo of her.
- 35:31Speaker 3: You idiot.
- 35:32Speaker 1: Posted it everywhere.
- 35:33Speaker 2: No, I have not and I will not post it everywhere.
- 35:37Speaker 2: But it's funny because in the photo you can see
- 35:39Speaker 2: the woman behind her pointing at my daughter going, that
- 35:43Speaker 2: little girl had that prize. And so and all around
- 35:47Speaker 2: us there's sort of. 20, 30 people who were looking
- 35:50Speaker 2: at me going, that was hers. That was hers. And
- 35:53Speaker 2: it's like, yeah, it was.
- 35:54Speaker 1: But what about the coaching from your daughter?
- 35:56Speaker 2: My daughter said, mum, if it's that important to her,
- 36:00Speaker 2: we'll let her have it. It's like, oh.
- 36:02Speaker 3: Oh, that's so mature.
- 36:03Speaker 2: Okay.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Yep.
- 36:04Speaker 2: And it's like. Let's free this bird, watch the rest
- 36:08Speaker 2: of the game. But I just thought, you know, you
- 36:11Speaker 2: see all these videos on, particularly with the baseball, so
- 36:14Speaker 2: where they put the ball into the crowd and they
- 36:16Speaker 2: get to keep them, and you see people taking the
- 36:19Speaker 2: magnificent catch and then giving it to the kid next
- 36:21Speaker 2: to them. And then there's the other videos where you
- 36:23Speaker 2: see some jerk adult taking it out of the, leaning
- 36:26Speaker 2: over the child and taking it from them. And it's like,
- 36:29Speaker 2: who do you want to be in this world? And
- 36:31Speaker 2: it's like, that's, I was absolutely shocked And she wouldn't
- 36:37Speaker 2: make eye contact with me. So she knew.
- 36:39Speaker 3: She absolutely knew. I was going to say, I wonder
- 36:41Speaker 3: if like sometimes that happens because everyone gets excited. Like
- 36:44Speaker 3: who doesn't love free stuff? I'm getting excited. If you're
- 36:46Speaker 3: looking up, you're not looking here's the kid. But surely
- 36:49Speaker 3: your mates, I think that's on her mates to say
- 36:51Speaker 3: to her, Actually, the kid had it. You should give
- 36:54Speaker 3: it over to the kid.
- 36:54Speaker 1: And this is what this lady was doing behind, which
- 36:56Speaker 1: is great.
- 36:56Speaker 2: But the lady behind her had said, you know, that
- 36:59Speaker 2: was hers. And I saw a couple of people have
- 37:01Speaker 2: that exact same conversation with her.
- 37:02Speaker 3: Oh, and she still didn't give it up.
- 37:04Speaker 1: It's mine.
- 37:05Speaker 3: Okay. Maybe she did need it.
- 37:06Speaker 2: Well, she was sitting in some pretty good seats wearing
- 37:09Speaker 2: a brand new Diamonds merch, so... I don't know. I
- 37:14Speaker 2: don't think we're talking about. But anyway, but it was
- 37:17Speaker 2: a great little promo and it was very fun.
- 37:20Speaker 3: That's very cool.
- 37:21Speaker 2: Because we looked up and it's like I can't see anything.
- 37:23Speaker 2: And then I thought, oh, is this a prank? Maybe
- 37:25Speaker 2: there is no thing coming from the ceiling and they're
- 37:27Speaker 2: going to start whacking us in the face. We're like
- 37:29Speaker 2: the T-shirt cannons. So, you know, I said nothing and elected,
- 37:34Speaker 2: as we do, to talk about it in Australia's largest
- 37:37Speaker 2: women's sport podcast.
- 37:38Speaker 1: LAUGHTER And we can only hope she got a flat
- 37:41Speaker 1: tyre on the way. Because I'm mature.
- 37:42Speaker 3: I think you did the right thing, though. You listened
- 37:45Speaker 3: to your daughter and you did let it go. Yeah.
- 37:46Speaker 2: Yeah, well, she was role modelling some good behaviours. Like
- 37:49Speaker 2: if she was in tears, and she's 13 now, so
- 37:52Speaker 2: it's like don't, you know, don't be in tears about that.
- 37:54Speaker 2: But it was an adult thing. behaving poorly to a child.
- 37:58Speaker 2: So it wouldn't surprise me if that was quite upsetting
- 38:00Speaker 2: for her. But, you know, once she was okay, it's like, well,
- 38:02Speaker 2: I'm only going to make matters worse here. Let's watch
- 38:04Speaker 2: some netball. Let's have a good time.
- 38:06Speaker 1: I would like to see you fire up in there.
- 38:08Speaker 1: Wouldn't that be great to see a little stick up
- 38:10Speaker 1: in the ground and see this one in the middle
- 38:12Speaker 1: of it? You'd be like, I've never seen it before
- 38:14Speaker 1: in my life.
- 38:15Speaker 3: Can you imagine I would get the incident report at
- 38:17Speaker 3: a board meeting?
- 38:21Speaker 1: And they'd have a sketch artist in who would draw
- 38:23Speaker 1: something very similar to this.
- 38:25Speaker 2: What do we? And I'd get a lifetime ban.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Oh, God. I was left in security. Do not let
- 38:35Speaker 1: this lady do the game.
- 38:40Speaker 2: No, you know, I'm about spreading joy and trying to
- 38:44Speaker 2: make the world a better place. But that would be
- 38:46Speaker 2: fun for you to get that incident report.
- 38:48Speaker 3: No, it would not be fun. Please do not do that.
- 38:50Speaker 2: Okay, I will not do that. That's all we've got
- 38:53Speaker 2: time for today. We will be back on Friday. Yeah,
- 38:58Speaker 2: I'm Carolyn Swindell.
- 38:58Speaker 1: I'm Kath Cox. I'm Liz Ellis.
- 39:00Speaker 3: Have a great week. Bye.
- 39:01Speaker 2: Bye.
