Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We are joining right now by Chrissy evert Uh, the
- 0:03Speaker 1: only person younger than Coco to make their second final
- 0:06Speaker 1: here at Roland Garris. Was you you called the match
- 0:09Speaker 1: for tnt UK your thoughts so she's able to lift
- 0:13Speaker 1: the trophy.
- 0:14Speaker 2: I'm I'm so happy for her, first of all, you know,
- 0:18Speaker 2: being an American and she is just Somebody asked me, you
- 0:21Speaker 2: know what impressed you the most with her? And I'm saying, well,
- 0:23Speaker 2: you mean, aside from her name, she is the most.
- 0:26Speaker 2: She's the greatest young woman ever. But I think the
- 0:30Speaker 2: fact that she didn't have ups and downs, and I
- 0:34Speaker 2: think that Arena really had too many ups and downs.
- 0:36Speaker 3: She had seventy.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Unforced sixty unforced airs, maybe seventy.
- 0:41Speaker 3: It was a seventy seventy.
- 0:42Speaker 2: I mean seventy unforced airs, and she just couldn't keep
- 0:45Speaker 2: that consistent level of high quality. And I'm impressed the
- 0:49Speaker 2: way that Coco finally caught on to her power. In
- 0:52Speaker 2: the beginning, Sebulenka I thought was going to.
- 0:54Speaker 3: Wipe her off.
- 0:54Speaker 1: It's oracle, just like her father.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Yeah, and it just like but but she found a way,
- 1:00Speaker 2: and she got quicker, and she got her timing back
- 1:03Speaker 2: and she made adjustments in her game so she could
- 1:06Speaker 2: return those hard shots. She stayed patient, she believed in herself,
- 1:11Speaker 2: she fought. I'm always amazed by the defense. I mean,
- 1:16Speaker 2: she gets balls back that nobody on the tour gets back,
- 1:19Speaker 2: and it forces players like sabal Anca to go for
- 1:21Speaker 2: too much, or it wears them down, or you know,
- 1:25Speaker 2: she really extends the rallies and on clay being so slow,
- 1:29Speaker 2: you know, it drives people crazy to have to return
- 1:32Speaker 2: so many balls against Cocoa.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Balla And we saw that emotion before we go to
- 1:35Speaker 1: the highlight. I'm curious. We talked before the match about
- 1:38Speaker 1: wind and the impact being in there.
- 1:40Speaker 3: What kind of an impact did it have.
- 1:41Speaker 4: On this match?
- 1:42Speaker 2: Well, when when you heard Arena say it was worse,
- 1:46Speaker 2: you know, I'm like, whoa, I mean you have to adjust.
- 1:50Speaker 2: It's the same on both sides. I mean you have
- 1:53Speaker 2: to make that adjustment. If you're number one in the
- 1:55Speaker 2: world and you're number two in the world, you know
- 1:57Speaker 2: you should know how to play on windy days by now,
- 2:01Speaker 2: and it was swirling. Well, you know what, then you
- 2:04Speaker 2: really have to get ready and get prepared for the
- 2:06Speaker 2: shot quicker and you have to be aware of that
- 2:09Speaker 2: and you have to make the court smaller and not
- 2:11Speaker 2: go for the lines all the time. If it's that Wendy,
- 2:13Speaker 2: so I you know, it was the same for both
- 2:16Speaker 2: of them, and I think Coco really adapted to it
- 2:19Speaker 2: much better.
- 2:20Speaker 1: You've won seven of these, so I'll take your points there. Okay,
- 2:23Speaker 1: probably right. Let's go to the highlights. Caroline Coco take
- 2:26Speaker 1: us through that first set. Early on, Caroline Seblenka had
- 2:29Speaker 1: complete control.
- 2:31Speaker 5: Absolutely, just like Christy said, we would go into this
- 2:34Speaker 5: match expecting this type of match. Sebalenka going for her shots,
- 2:38Speaker 5: going for her serfs, going for her returns, and she
- 2:41Speaker 5: came out firing to start with the at four to
- 2:44Speaker 5: one forty loves Sevelenka nada bella fault and kind of
- 2:47Speaker 5: lost her head and started over hitting and Cocoa bab
- 2:51Speaker 5: just stay patient. She knew what she was supposed to
- 2:53Speaker 5: do out there. She knew getting that extra ball in
- 2:56Speaker 5: play was going to drive Seblenka nuts.
- 2:59Speaker 3: And we saw a lot of.
- 3:00Speaker 5: This finesse and movement and it was beautiful, but you
- 3:03Speaker 5: could just see Sevelenka's mood going all over the place,
- 3:07Speaker 5: and we haven't seen that so far in this tournament. Meanwhile,
- 3:10Speaker 5: Coco's just grinding. She is hitting every single shot back.
- 3:13Speaker 5: She's finding her back and she's attacking the back and
- 3:15Speaker 5: she's not making a lot of double wild she's getting
- 3:18Speaker 5: her first servant. And you can just see Coco again, steady,
- 3:22Speaker 5: head down, no problem. Seblenka, on the other hand, screaming
- 3:27Speaker 5: to her box, showing her emotions, and that would have
- 3:30Speaker 5: helped Gop in this situation.
- 3:31Speaker 1: All that being Saidbleka wins this tie break.
- 3:35Speaker 6: It was crazy because Coco had such a commanding lead
- 3:38Speaker 6: in this tiebreaker, and power prevailed in this moment, and
- 3:42Speaker 6: Satelenka was more willing to come forward.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Even though she wasn't so successful at nuts.
- 3:47Speaker 6: It was just the pressure at hand. But the second
- 3:50Speaker 6: set was a complete flip of the Scridget scripts. It
- 3:53Speaker 6: was all Coco Gop. She got up to an early
- 3:56Speaker 6: double break. It got a little bit nervy at times
- 3:59Speaker 6: here and there, but she was able to control the
- 4:01Speaker 6: middle of the court and Satelanca just I think emotionally
- 4:05Speaker 6: was depleted come this second set. So now we get
- 4:08Speaker 6: down to the third set. All the cards are on
- 4:09Speaker 6: the table and let's see what you got. And Coco
- 4:12Speaker 6: just stayed steady. That's what she did throughout.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Definitely a lot of awkwara shots the treiner. You got
- 4:17Speaker 3: to have some chowmanship.
- 4:19Speaker 6: Out here everybody, and that's where Coco Gop is really
- 4:22Speaker 6: just so tough. She keeps pressure on you. She gets
- 4:26Speaker 6: the first break here and you think Satellanca.
- 4:28Speaker 5: Is just going to lose it.
- 4:29Speaker 1: This emotion throughout the match, it was a lot.
- 4:32Speaker 2: She was feeling the pressure. I mean, she was feeling
- 4:34Speaker 2: the pressure. She was venting to her coach's box and
- 4:37Speaker 2: they were just like, you know, I didn't know what
- 4:39Speaker 2: to do. But really she lost control of herself and
- 4:42Speaker 2: we haven't, like Caroline says, we haven't seen that in
- 4:44Speaker 2: a while. She's been really wearing the number one position very.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Well, and yet she still fought back on championship points.
- 4:51Speaker 1: I thought this could go to Taipan name.
- 4:54Speaker 2: It was so I mean, it was such an up
- 4:56Speaker 2: and down match. The momentum switches were incredible. You never
- 4:59Speaker 2: knew who is going to win the match.
- 5:01Speaker 1: We thought that may have been out, but instead.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Yes, and then that could have been another match.
- 5:07Speaker 3: You know, who knows.
- 5:07Speaker 2: But at the end of the day, this is the
- 5:09Speaker 2: young woman who kept her composure kept her consistency, and
- 5:14Speaker 2: she just bought so hard.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Laid on the ground covered in clay, the elation for
- 5:19Speaker 1: her mother, the complete craziness that we know her father
- 5:23Speaker 1: was likely going through at that time. I appreciate the
- 5:25Speaker 1: sportsmanship that Arena showed to Coco there, but Coco lifts
- 5:29Speaker 1: the trophy.
- 5:30Speaker 3: She deserves it.
- 5:31Speaker 5: You know, throughout this tournament she's not played her best tennis,
- 5:35Speaker 5: but she's found a way to win.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Today.
- 5:38Speaker 5: She was down in the first set big. You could
- 5:40Speaker 5: have thought that was going to run away from her,
- 5:42Speaker 5: but she found a way to grind her way back.
- 5:44Speaker 5: She found a way in these conditions every just like
- 5:47Speaker 5: Chrissy said, they had even conditions from both sides, and
- 5:50Speaker 5: you have to figure out a way to play. And
- 5:52Speaker 5: Coco did that better today. And kudos to her. She
- 5:55Speaker 5: deserves this one.
- 5:56Speaker 3: And Snats tell the story.
- 5:58Speaker 6: Forty eight percent first points one for Arena Sabalanca. That
- 6:02Speaker 6: is unheard of with that big of a first serve.
- 6:04Speaker 6: That just shows the determination of Coco golf right there.
- 6:07Speaker 6: You're more expecting a forty eight percent on the second
- 6:09Speaker 6: surch which it was forty seven.
- 6:11Speaker 2: That last line seventy unforced as crazy thirty, only only
- 6:16Speaker 2: thirty from Coco.
- 6:18Speaker 3: You have this settle.
- 6:18Speaker 1: I had more than thirty in the first set. Coco
- 6:21Speaker 1: had thirty for the entire match. She's able to keep
- 6:24Speaker 1: her cool, her composure, and afterwards she met up with
- 6:27Speaker 1: our cool and composed Sloan steps.
- 6:32Speaker 3: Coco.
- 6:32Speaker 7: Amazing match today, twenty twenty five, Roland Garrow's champion. How
- 6:36Speaker 7: does it feel?
- 6:37Speaker 4: Yeah, it feels great. It was tough. I don't think
- 6:39Speaker 4: either of us are playing great, but I knew as
- 6:41Speaker 4: soon as I stepped in the court when I felt
- 6:43Speaker 4: that it was windy, it was going to be one
- 6:44Speaker 4: of those matches. So I was just trying to give
- 6:46Speaker 4: myself the best chance and fight every point.
- 6:48Speaker 7: Before the match, I said, she's a fighter, but you're
- 6:50Speaker 7: an even better fighter. Did How deep did you have
- 6:52Speaker 7: to dig in order to pull that out?
- 6:54Speaker 4: Really deep? I think especially that last game. You know,
- 6:57Speaker 4: I was obviously very nervous, but I think that was,
- 7:00Speaker 4: you know, something I'm really proud of, just managing to
- 7:02Speaker 4: get another ball back and trying to play with a condition.
- 7:05Speaker 7: So, yeah, okay, we conquered this. What's next?
- 7:08Speaker 4: Hopefully another one? Yeah, definitely another one, but for now,
- 7:14Speaker 4: just enjoying this one and yeah, I'm glad to get
- 7:16Speaker 4: another title to my resume.
- 7:19Speaker 7: Congratulations, Thank you, Coco Gol.
- 7:21Speaker 1: A two time major champion, a Rolling Garros champion, and
- 7:27Speaker 1: that is something history we'll never forget. An American reign
- 7:31Speaker 1: supreme on the clay, and the congratulations are rolling in.
- 7:34Speaker 1: First up, Billy Jean King, congrats on her second Grand
- 7:38Speaker 1: Slam Women's singles title and her first singles title at
- 7:41Speaker 1: Rolling Garros. Outstanding, Michelle Obama with the congrats. Your determination,
- 7:47Speaker 1: strength and grace throughout the French Open has inspired us
- 7:50Speaker 1: all and showed us what's possible. Proud of you. Carlos Alcarez,
- 7:56Speaker 1: who will be in the main event tomorrow. Just like
- 7:58Speaker 1: Coco flashed the heart, he sends it back. Many congrats,
- 8:02Speaker 1: and there he is. Matthew McConaughey, Go Go golf, takes
- 8:07Speaker 1: the French. Congrats on second major, first on clay, Go
- 8:10Speaker 1: go golf. All right, all right, all right, and I'm
- 8:14Speaker 1: sure there are many more, but here are the facts.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Second major title of her career, of course, the twenty
- 8:19Speaker 1: twenty three US Open, also against the Sabolenka, also a
- 8:24Speaker 1: set down, first US player to win Roland Garrison. Serena,
- 8:27Speaker 1: as we've mentioned, first went over a number one in majors,
- 8:31Speaker 1: was zero to four and now she is ten to three.
- 8:34Speaker 1: In finals, she had just lost one to Sabolenka. It
- 8:38Speaker 1: was an ATP Masters one thousand, sitting courtside for that
- 8:42Speaker 1: entire match, getting to do the interview afterwards with Sloan Stevens.
- 8:46Speaker 1: How nervous were you the entire time?
- 8:48Speaker 3: Oh?
- 8:48Speaker 7: I was nervous for both of them. Actually, it's hard
- 8:50Speaker 7: to hit courtside and like not when you see an
- 8:52Speaker 7: air you're.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Like, oh, no, she shouldn't have done that. Oh she
- 8:55Speaker 3: should have made it first serve.
- 8:56Speaker 7: Oh, like, there's so many things that you wish you
- 8:59Speaker 7: could be like helping them with. I'm like, just let
- 9:01Speaker 7: me go out there and play for you, Like I
- 9:02Speaker 7: feel like it's just so it's stressful. It's very stressful.
- 9:05Speaker 1: So how does it feel when there's one hundred unforced hours?
- 9:08Speaker 3: Oh? Yeah, that's tough.
- 9:09Speaker 7: It was honestly someone that came out firing all of
- 9:13Speaker 7: her shots are working and was going amazing. She was
- 9:15Speaker 7: hitting dropshots, she was slicing, she was doing so many things.
- 9:18Speaker 7: It was connecting so well, and then it wasn't right,
- 9:20Speaker 7: And I think when you have a match like that
- 9:22Speaker 7: where you're not able to control the airrors and it
- 9:24Speaker 7: just kind of got away from her. My biggest thing
- 9:27Speaker 7: before the match was if she can control her emotions right,
- 9:30Speaker 7: she can win the match. She did not control any
- 9:32Speaker 7: emotions today and that's what lost her the match.
- 9:35Speaker 3: I wasn't sure.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Sometimes when we're watching on TV and they're zooming really
- 9:38Speaker 1: tight on their face and slow mo, what was it
- 9:40Speaker 1: like Courtsye with the way she was communicating with her box.
- 9:44Speaker 7: I think today she was just overly frustrated. Like when
- 9:46Speaker 7: it was for to one, she was up, things were
- 9:48Speaker 7: going well, it was four all, and then it just
- 9:50Speaker 7: fell apart. Really, I think she had those emotions inside.
- 9:53Speaker 7: She was very tense, and then when it started to
- 9:55Speaker 7: come out, it was very visible. And then to her
- 9:57Speaker 7: team she started chirping at them. She was going back
- 10:00Speaker 7: back and forth, and then she told them someone to leave.
- 10:02Speaker 3: Like there was a lot of things happening.
- 10:04Speaker 7: It was a very emotional day for her, which I
- 10:06Speaker 7: think it wasn't about the tennis. She was fighting herself,
- 10:09Speaker 7: like she battled herself today and Coco and that's what
- 10:11Speaker 7: made it so hard.
- 10:12Speaker 1: How windy was it down there.
- 10:14Speaker 7: Oh, I was literally shivering. I was wrapped up in
- 10:16Speaker 7: a blanket like a newborn. It was literally terrible.
- 10:19Speaker 3: The wind was going back and forth.
- 10:20Speaker 7: We were trying to figure out which direction.
- 10:22Speaker 3: It was going.
- 10:22Speaker 7: It was swirling, and it was going one side across
- 10:24Speaker 7: the court. So, like she said, it was very difficult
- 10:28Speaker 7: conditions today. And of course the roof could have been closed.
- 10:30Speaker 7: There so many other factors that could have been a
- 10:32Speaker 7: factor in the match, but today the main was the
- 10:34Speaker 7: wind and that it was actually really cold.
- 10:37Speaker 3: And I think she.
- 10:37Speaker 7: Thought that maybe that would help her, but I don't
- 10:40Speaker 7: think it helped her today. It actually made her hit
- 10:42Speaker 7: miss more and hit more airs.
- 10:43Speaker 1: And then you look at Coco, it seemed the complete opposite,
- 10:47Speaker 1: just as someone who's seen her grow up, to keep
- 10:49Speaker 1: that composure, to keep that stoicism, What was that like
- 10:52Speaker 1: for you to watch?
- 10:53Speaker 7: Yeah, Coco, like I said at the beginning of the match,
- 10:55Speaker 7: I said, she's going to get out there and fight
- 10:57Speaker 7: for her life. She's going to be so rock solid.
- 10:59Speaker 7: She's going to out there do what she needs to do.
- 11:01Speaker 7: She's always going to execute. She never let her lets
- 11:03Speaker 7: her mind wander too much. She doesn't have like those
- 11:05Speaker 7: let down in like five games, six games, seven games,
- 11:08Speaker 7: where you're trying to figure out what's going on. Like,
- 11:09Speaker 7: She's very steady, and I think today she knew she
- 11:12Speaker 7: had to be steady. She knew it, she had to
- 11:13Speaker 7: come out in the match and make so many balls.
- 11:15Speaker 7: She knew she was going to have to run for
- 11:16Speaker 7: her life. She knew she was gonna have to do
- 11:18Speaker 7: all those things. And instead of getting frustrated and upset
- 11:20Speaker 7: when it wasn't going her way, she just put her
- 11:21Speaker 7: head down and kept running. And I think for Irena
- 11:24Speaker 7: to kind of get in that mode, she let Irena
- 11:26Speaker 7: play herself out of the match. And that's what Coco
- 11:28Speaker 7: Golf does really well.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Arina Sablanka has been the number one now in this
- 11:32Speaker 1: reach and Stretch for about thirty three consecutive weeks, forty
- 11:35Speaker 1: one overall. She came in as the decided favorite in
- 11:38Speaker 1: this match, and yet Coco beats her again. I don't
- 11:42Speaker 1: want to just start how many majors is she going
- 11:44Speaker 1: to win? But when you see this composure against this foe,
- 11:47Speaker 1: what kind of a future do we have for the
- 11:49Speaker 1: twenty one year old American Cocoa Golf?
- 11:51Speaker 2: Her future well, first, of all, everyone has always been
- 11:54Speaker 2: talking about IgA. You know her dominance on the red clay,
- 11:58Speaker 2: but I mean cococ Can have dominance on red clay
- 12:01Speaker 2: for sure. The way she played, I mean, she plays
- 12:05Speaker 2: EGA's game a little bit even better. I mean she
- 12:07Speaker 2: beat her, what six one six one couple weeks ago.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Yes, so I think won our last time.
- 12:11Speaker 2: I think, when I start looking at Roland Garrow's picks,
- 12:14Speaker 2: I'm going to always go for a Coco before I
- 12:17Speaker 2: go for anybody else. But she has so many ahead
- 12:20Speaker 2: of her. I mean we saw that at fifteen years old.
- 12:22Speaker 2: We saw when she'd beat Venus at Wimbledon. We thought,
- 12:25Speaker 2: this girl's going to be winning ten, twelve, fourteen major titles.
- 12:30Speaker 2: I mean, she's got the game and she can stay healthy.
- 12:32Speaker 2: She knows defense, she knows offense, she doesn't need to work.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Her forehands looking so good now, so much better than before.
- 12:40Speaker 2: We see her serve when she needed it. It was
- 12:42Speaker 2: there for her, even though she had eight double faults.
- 12:45Speaker 2: She just loves the game and she's gonna be around
- 12:47Speaker 2: for a long long time winning majors.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Could you see her winning Wimbledon Women in Australia and
- 12:52Speaker 1: maybe getting a Slam a complete slam out of this.
- 12:56Speaker 3: She already has no no, no.
- 12:58Speaker 2: No, no, no, She's going to win all all of them.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Oh yeah, sorry, I thought you made it one year
- 13:02Speaker 2: with Stephie Roth is the only player that did that.
- 13:05Speaker 3: But for sure she can win on every surface.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Well she's one on clay and she's one on hard
- 13:10Speaker 2: that's what. So yeah, I could see definitely she can
- 13:13Speaker 2: win one.
- 13:13Speaker 3: Just means when you say it, no, she can.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Now I don't know if it's going to be this
- 13:17Speaker 2: year because I'm looking at Avalanca.
- 13:19Speaker 3: I don't thinking, oh, she didn't.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Play last year, she was injured, she didn't play the
- 13:22Speaker 2: year that they didn't let the Russians play. I mean
- 13:25Speaker 2: she's missed a few years. To me, that surface is
- 13:28Speaker 2: like her best surface, just because of her power.
- 13:31Speaker 1: All of you ladies have started so young. To see
- 13:34Speaker 1: this out of someone at twenty one years old, what
- 13:36Speaker 1: does it make you feel?
- 13:38Speaker 5: Well, today, we saw Ceblanka, for example, that can lose
- 13:42Speaker 5: her head and Coco just doesn't have that. And normally
- 13:45Speaker 5: when someone starts off as young, they'll have the ups
- 13:47Speaker 5: and downs, and you know, they'll have the disappointments and
- 13:50Speaker 5: it takes a while to come back. But for Coco,
- 13:53Speaker 5: she's just done so well at recuperating. Once she has
- 13:57Speaker 5: a disappointment, she's like, you know what, it happens. I
- 13:59Speaker 5: just need to keep working moving forward. I know what
- 14:01Speaker 5: my goal is. And I mean, she's so much more
- 14:05Speaker 5: mature than a twenty one year old. Do you think
- 14:07Speaker 5: she's twenty five twenty six years old? And that's why
- 14:10Speaker 5: she's going to be on the big stage for a
- 14:12Speaker 5: long time, why she's going to win more majors, why
- 14:14Speaker 5: she's going to be at the top of women's game
- 14:16Speaker 5: for a long time.
- 14:17Speaker 2: She's a winner. Though, don't you think it's because you
- 14:19Speaker 2: young player? You young players here, I mean, don't you
- 14:22Speaker 2: think when you do well in the juniors that translates
- 14:24Speaker 2: into the pros? Because she won the junior the French
- 14:28Speaker 2: rope in this storm room, I think when she.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Is fifteen, twenty eighteen is the year fifteen.
- 14:32Speaker 6: Okay, it's definitely not a guarantee, but it definitely helps.
- 14:35Speaker 7: For sure.
- 14:36Speaker 2: I think it helped her, oh for sure, that way,
- 14:37Speaker 2: I think that it gave her. She was a great
- 14:39Speaker 2: junior player, and then she got into the pros and
- 14:42Speaker 2: it wasn't a real big jump. She just smoothly got
- 14:45Speaker 2: it right into it, and anyway, I think that's helped.
- 14:47Speaker 6: It's funny because I met her the first time at
- 14:50Speaker 6: the twenty seventeen US Open, the year that Sloan won,
- 14:52Speaker 6: I made the semis.
- 14:53Speaker 3: Her dad came up to me.
- 14:54Speaker 6: She won the juniors or lost in the finals that year,
- 14:57Speaker 6: if I'm remembering correctly. Dad comes up to me, it's like,
- 15:00Speaker 6: my daughter's name's Coco.
- 15:01Speaker 4: Two.
- 15:02Speaker 6: You got to meet her, and I was like absolutely,
- 15:04Speaker 6: like yeah, for sure, and let alone. In like two years,
- 15:07Speaker 6: three years, she's beating Venus Williams and all these things
- 15:10Speaker 6: that you just can never guess these things, but you
- 15:12Speaker 6: always hope that the next American is going to be
- 15:15Speaker 6: born right in front.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Of your eyes. And happened really quickly.
- 15:17Speaker 6: Because Coco's making me feel very old winning this young.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I've talked to Chris Eubanks and here remembers when
- 15:24Speaker 1: Coco golf was five years old playing on a muni
- 15:27Speaker 1: court in Atlanta, And now she's out here doing this.
- 15:29Speaker 1: It's pretty darn special. Can't wait to watch her for
- 15:32Speaker 1: years to come.
