- 0:28Good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:31So let's talk self-awareness today.
- 0:34What do I mean when I'm talking self-awareness while I'm talking
- 0:37about all of your being, how you show up, how you act, how you
- 0:42speak, how you carry yourself? It all affects everyone around
- 0:47you and we often talk about self-awareness so we can improve
- 0:51ourselves in our self-improvement exercises.
- 0:55But today I really want to talk about self-awareness with how
- 0:59this affects everyone. Around you.
- 1:02So I've had multiple conversations with multiple
- 1:06people this week from a particular client, that I'm
- 1:10working with, and his company. And we keep having a very
- 1:16pointed discussion about lack of awareness.
- 1:21Nobody recognizes what they're doing, that are affecting other
- 1:25people, and it keeps looping back to a conversation about
- 1:29well, You know, I'm supposed to be responsible for myself.
- 1:34I'm supposed to be responsible for myself, and it's, that's not
- 1:38fair. And other people should be
- 1:40responsible for themselves and everybody's pointing fingers and
- 1:44I thought, you know, this is a great time to have a
- 1:46conversation just like I'm having with them have a
- 1:48conversation with all of you about, you know, it's very true.
- 1:53We are 100% responsible for ourselves.
- 1:55We're 100% responsible for what we think and how we Act and the
- 2:00Is we make everything that's going on around us is going on
- 2:04around us but we ultimately are responsible for ourselves how we
- 2:07think and how we choose to show up at the same time, there is a
- 2:12part of us and our Humanity that has to look at how what we are
- 2:18doing. Is affecting other people and
- 2:22when we don't do that, we are being very selfish because we do
- 2:28affect other people when you are in an office.
- 2:30Office and you are working with other people and you show up a
- 2:33certain way, it does affect other people.
- 2:35So I'll give you a silly example but very true.
- 2:38I was on a plane once and I was on my way to from Boston to San
- 2:44Francisco San Francisco to Hawaii.
- 2:46And I was going out to work an event in Hawaii and I had a long
- 2:50flight obviously, six hours and then I had a layover and then I
- 2:53had another six hours to jump over to Hawaii.
- 2:57And I was pretty tired by the time I got from boss.
- 3:00The San Francisco and got on the plane.
- 3:04And the next thing, you know, I sit down and this very nice
- 3:08older woman comes and she sits next to me and she opens her bag
- 3:12and she takes out a sandwich and it's a tuna sandwich.
- 3:16And I'm saying to myself, she's not going to really eat a tuna
- 3:19fish sandwich on this plane. I mean the whole planes going to
- 3:21smell like tuna fish and for those of us who don't travel
- 3:25well with stomach issues, which could very well, be a lot of us
- 3:29and I just don't like to eat while I'm Flying, especially
- 3:32over the ocean. She's eating a tuna fish
- 3:34sandwich which now is going to remain on this flight for 6
- 3:37hours because it's all. We're all going to smell and
- 3:39everyone around the seat is sitting there.
- 3:41Looking at her. Like are you deranged with
- 3:43you're going to eat the sandwich.
- 3:45It was my very first moment of really thinking that I
- 3:50distinctly remember thinking how incredibly selfish that this one
- 3:54person will say this is what I'm going to do in this is going to
- 3:57affect other people or not. Think it's going to affect other
- 4:00people. But again, I say it's a silly
- 4:03example, but it's a really good one because it makes you think.
- 4:06And I will often say to clients. Well, are you being tuna fish
- 4:10sandwich in the room? Are you being the stench?
- 4:12Are you causing the problem? Because we're so unaware of the
- 4:16things that we do that affect other people?
- 4:18You know, I am what my husband would say is I am Abed hog, like
- 4:23I have a big bed, we share a bed but I am constantly moving into
- 4:28his space and I don't I'm doing it but apparently I am doing it
- 4:34so he's constantly like, okay, you got to give me a little bit
- 4:37more space. I'm a big guy.
- 4:38I don't have enough room here and it affects him.
- 4:42Now I could sit there and say which I do and I tease him and
- 4:45I'm going on on your side but I really am on his side.
- 4:48I could be aware of it, I could say, I'm trying to do better
- 4:51with this and actually do better with it but we have to pay
- 4:54attention to how our actions. Our words, our language, how we
- 5:00show up, Affects other people, the things that we don't think
- 5:04about actually affect other people, and not a little, a lot,
- 5:09a lot. So, I'm I'm saying, as I go
- 5:13through this company and I work with these people individually
- 5:15and I work through this, this executive team I have to ask
- 5:22everybody, do you think there's anything that you're doing?
- 5:26That's affecting other people on your team and I will tell you
- 5:29the funniest answers. Come out because they will all
- 5:32say, you know, I don't think so I'm pretty good and that lack of
- 5:36awareness just shows such a lack of growth because let me be very
- 5:40honest. With all of you.
- 5:42We all do shit that affects other people.
- 5:45I'm serious we do and we have to make sure that we stop that as
- 5:50much as we can. Is it ever going to be
- 5:52absolutely neutral? No, because we always do, but we
- 5:56have to do better at looking at. Yes, we are 100% responsible for
- 6:02ourselves. And we do do things that affect
- 6:05other people and we have to consider that it's not going to
- 6:09be perfect, but the better job you do with this, especially in
- 6:12your family, in your work environment.
- 6:16I promise you things get only exponentially better when you
- 6:19pay attention to that and when you really work on that piece of
- 6:22it. So have a little bit of kindness
- 6:25have a little bit of awareness and hopefully you can look at
- 6:28something today and say you know what, I'm going to do a Lil bit
- 6:31better today. So I hope you guys have an
- 6:35awesome day and I will see you tomorrow.
- 6:37Bye.
