Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Cutting red tape by adding complexity

- 0:00Speaker 1: Do we really need a Minister of Booze? Back in
- 0:03Speaker 1: the good old days, they were all Ministers of Booze.
- 0:05Speaker 1: The whole Cabinet, especially this one. Doesn't give my opponents
- 0:08Speaker 1: much time to run up to a election, does it?
- 0:12Speaker 1: But the idea that we need a Minister responsible for alcohol,
- 0:16Speaker 1: while well-intentioned, like all the 81-odd portfolios that previous reviews
- 0:23Speaker 1: and recommendations have created, is not necessary. This is one
- 0:28Speaker 1: of the recommendations from the Hospitality Sector Regulatory Review. This
- 0:33Speaker 1: review was done by the Ministry for Regulation. Remember that
- 0:37Speaker 1: ministry was created to cut red tape and make government
- 0:40Speaker 1: less complicated. It's recommended creating a new agency and a
- 0:45Speaker 1: new ministerial responsibility. It was announced by the Minister for Regulation,
- 0:49Speaker 1: David Seymour, whose role was also set up to cut
- 0:52Speaker 1: red tape. Can you see the problem here? There are
- 0:56Speaker 1: no doubt good reasons to make rules simpler and get
- 0:58Speaker 1: rid of regulations, but creating a new minister and ministry
- 1:01Speaker 1: who then does a review and recommends creating another agency
- 1:05Speaker 1: and another ministerial job just sounds backwards. It's like bacteria,
- 1:10Speaker 1: bureaucratic bacteria. They multiply and spread everywhere. One minute, it's
- 1:14Speaker 1: a single cell. Next minute, it's split into two. Next minute,
- 1:17Speaker 1: there's four. It goes on and on and on. We
- 1:20Speaker 1: need fewer jobs in Wellington, surely not more. Remember, Ireland, Norway, Singapore, Finland,
- 1:25Speaker 1: similar size to us, they've got fewer than 20 ministerial roles.
- 1:29Speaker 1: The UK, Canada, the US, Korea, a lot larger than us,
- 1:33Speaker 1: still fewer than 30. The saving grace here is that
- 1:37Speaker 1: no decisions on this review have yet been made, so
- 1:40Speaker 1: why not just cut the red tape and send the
- 1:43Speaker 1: pollies for a beer at Bellamy's? For more from Early
