Latest / That Car Show / Mind the Gap
Transcript
- 0:00Looks like a blood sausage in one of those.
- 0:01I'm just. Saying this week on that car
- 0:10show, we wrap up what was a pretty epic 2025.
- 0:14By planning for an even more epic 2026.
- 0:17We came up with what would the ideal Car enthusiast gap year
- 0:22look like with events every month, and we were very excited
- 0:26to discover that at least one of us has been to most of these
- 0:30events. So it was tough to choose a
- 0:32favorite and I really chose more than one favorite.
- 0:36Unsurprisingly, Ryan also just got back from another 2000 mile
- 0:41road trip in the Toyota Crown Signia and he has thoughts.
- 0:45That and a lot more to wrap up this year on that car show.
- 0:49Welcome to another cruise show. We're back with a bit of a
- 0:53special agenda this week. How's everyone doing?
- 0:57Post Christmas, you know, recovery mode.
- 1:00How about you guys? Well, Ryan's clearly doing very
- 1:03well. He's got a glass of red wine in
- 1:04his. Head makes me feel fine.
- 1:10We're doing it wrong, Lindsay. I know clearly I just have iced
- 1:13tea. It's not the way to go.
- 1:15Right. I've just got Coke from
- 1:16Chick-fil-A. But I thought this this week we
- 1:19would do something a bit special.
- 1:21There is a massive year next year in terms of car stuff to be
- 1:24done. So I thought that car show
- 1:26should take a gap year. But I think before we go into
- 1:29what that means and what that looks like, I think we need to
- 1:31define what a gap year is. So, Ryan, I think you had a
- 1:35pretty good definition, didn't you?
- 1:37Well I asked the Google and it said bear with me.
- 1:43Had it right in front of me. It's been I should preferably.
- 1:48I didn't have a gap year personally, right?
- 1:51I mean, I didn't know what I was doing at that age.
- 1:53I could have benefited from a gap year or three.
- 1:56But. So for those of you who don't
- 1:58know when I give it the GOOG. The GOOG replied with the
- 2:02purpose of a gap year is to provide an international break
- 2:06for personal growth, exploration and skill building to foster
- 2:09maturity, clarity and motivation.
- 2:12Allowing individuals to gain real world experience, clarity,
- 2:15clarify goals, recharge and develop crucial life, slash
- 2:19career skills before diving into further education or work.
- 2:23It's a period for self discovery through activities to foster a
- 2:26stronger sense of purpose. And boy, I could use all.
- 2:31Those things so so Lindsay, have you done a gap year?
- 2:35I have not that was, I think it was just starting to like the
- 2:39concept was just kind of making its way to the states towards
- 2:42the end of my time in university.
- 2:44So it was not really a thing the way it is now, or common.
- 2:48But you did study abroad, right? I did, I was in England for a
- 2:53semester in college so that was like a mini gap year.
- 3:00We've set the level because none of us have done a gap year yet,
- 3:02right? So.
- 3:04So this is where our. Gap year.
- 3:06Implies. Or two, yeah, an automotive gap
- 3:10year with a purpose to provide personal growth, exploration,
- 3:15skill building, clarity and motivation, allowing us to gain
- 3:20real world experience. So what I thought we'd do is we
- 3:23would plan our gap year as a group.
- 3:26In essence, all our gap year activities need to be
- 3:29correlated. So what we're going to do is
- 3:32we're going to make some recommendations based on the
- 3:34months. I know some of these
- 3:36recommendations some of us have done.
- 3:38So I'll ask you to share your experiences and we will plan out
- 3:42that car show's gap year. Are you guys in for this?
- 3:45I'm game. Let's do it.
- 3:47Awesome. So let's take us to January.
- 3:49Fall into the gap. Fall into yeah, don't please
- 3:52mind the gap, as we would say in England.
- 3:54Here we go. 1st on the gap here, International Experiences is
- 4:00retro Mobile in Paris. Now, Lindsay, you've been to
- 4:04this event, so tell us a little bit about the event and whether
- 4:06you would go back. So I would absolutely go back.
- 4:09Last year was my first year. I have gotten to know Ramall who
- 4:13runs the event and after hearing about it for many years from
- 4:17him, got to go last year with my friend Laura and it is a must
- 4:22see event and it's a fantastic excuse to go to Paris.
- 4:26So if I had had more time I would have gone.
- 4:30I would have gotten there like the weekend before Retro Mobile
- 4:33because it starts on a Wednesday and goes until Sunday and there
- 4:37is plenty at the event to hold your attention that entire time
- 4:41because it is a massive, massive.
- 4:45It's like multiple convention halls just outside of Paris.
- 4:51It's very accessible from the center of town.
- 4:53You can just use the metro. So it's super easy to be right
- 4:57in the center of town, get to the event, go check it out, and
- 5:00then you can also do all of the things in Paris.
- 5:03But the event itself is so varied and there's so much to
- 5:07see. You know, I really just had a
- 5:10day there and I covered a lot of ground and got to like, I got a
- 5:14very good sense of the event overall, but definitely could
- 5:18have spent more time because it's like a combination of SEMA
- 5:23and there's a live auction going on.
- 5:25And then there are, you know, because there's like when we
- 5:29went to the LA Auto Show and there was the, the area with all
- 5:32of the Matchbox cars and they have people with different parts
- 5:39and they have a lot of different like European auction houses.
- 5:42We'll bring some of the cars that they have and then you've
- 5:45got people like, you know, the European like got their works
- 5:49and singer and that kind of thing.
- 5:52There are, you know, all manner of classic cars.
- 5:56And then in another area they had there was a band like as
- 6:01part of one of the displays. And then they had people on old
- 6:05timey bicycles. They had historical vehicles on
- 6:08display from, you know, wartime. Like it's obviously it's hard to
- 6:14put it into a succinct description because there is so
- 6:17much to see and there's so much variety, but cannot say enough
- 6:21good things about it. And I think the really cool
- 6:25thing was that we ran into like a significant number of friends
- 6:29from the States. So it's the draw.
- 6:33It's kind of like car week in the sense that people do travel
- 6:36a long ways to get there. And so you get to see friends
- 6:39from Europe and friends from the States.
- 6:40And like, I think it's a fantastic way to kick off the
- 6:43gap year. But what I didn't realize until
- 6:46I got there is that because it's such a draw, a lot of the
- 6:49auction houses will do a big European auction in Paris before
- 6:53the event starts or right when the event starts.
- 6:57I think RMS auction was like maybe a day or two before I got
- 7:03there, and then I think Christie's had one.
- 7:07So there's a lot going on in Paris adjacent to the event,
- 7:11kind of like what happens here with some of the events where
- 7:13the auction houses will do an auction in the town where the
- 7:16events happening because they know everybody's already going
- 7:19to be there. Ryan, does that sort of thing
- 7:21appeal to you? I mean, he had who had me at old
- 7:24timey bicycles, right? I mean, who doesn't like a penny
- 7:26Farthing I? Know.
- 7:28Right. I would love to go.
- 7:29I mean, you know, it's it's it sounds like a great event.
- 7:33Everyone that I've ever known who's gone has said it's
- 7:35fantastic. Just kind of overwhelms the
- 7:37senses, right. There's probably some French way
- 7:41to say that that's even more impressive.
- 7:42But hey, my yeah, it seems. Yeah, that's there you go.
- 7:47It seems pretty great. And I would like to go sometime.
- 7:50Obviously, you know, it's a little tougher than you know,
- 7:53going to Carmel. But aren't we going to have them
- 7:56on the show? The organizers at some?
- 7:58Point yes, that's the plan, so we can hear it straight from
- 8:01that, but in the meantime, you'll have to make do with my
- 8:04attempts at describing it putting.
- 8:06It into two words, yeah. I I trust we can get 3 media
- 8:10passes. Right, that's right, true
- 8:12mobile. Not just an excuse to drink wine
- 8:15and smelly eat smelly cheese. But let's and if I need an
- 8:19excuse for that. Yeah, right.
- 8:22The next one on the list is Scottsdale Car Week.
- 8:25So this is, you know, another event that is raved about by our
- 8:29friend Jorge. Have you guys heard about this
- 8:32event? I have heard about it but I have
- 8:34not attended. The City of Love in the US.
- 8:39Scottsdale. Scottsdale, culture capital of
- 8:44the American West. I you know, I've never yeah,
- 8:46I've never been. Jorge raves about it.
- 8:48It's always fun to hang out with him.
- 8:50Of course, I'm kind of on the fence this year whether or not
- 8:53to go because I think it's, it sounds like it's primarily
- 8:56auction driven, right? And, you know, it's a little
- 9:00more inclusive, right, maybe than some of the auctions that,
- 9:02you know, say Car Week or, or Amelia or something.
- 9:07I don't know. I mean, you got the good
- 9:08weather, right? It's the time of the year when
- 9:10you want to go and get some sunshine and some rays.
- 9:12So. And I mean, yeah, I don't know,
- 9:16maybe this will be the year neither one of you have been
- 9:19right? Correct.
- 9:21Yeah, I've not. Lindsay, does it appeal to you?
- 9:25It was not something that I was aware of really until last year
- 9:29and I would love to check it out at some point.
- 9:31I think at this point, with it kind of coming right on the
- 9:35heels of the holidays, it's trickier to arrange, but I would
- 9:38love to visit in the near future.
- 9:42Well, I am planning to go at the moment, so I will take one for
- 9:45the team and and see what it's like and see what's going on.
- 9:50The. Next one, yeah, I'll report back
- 9:53and and see whether it's worth doing.
- 9:55The next one isn't on our list, but I thought about it.
- 9:58So Meekum's have an auction in Kissimmee, FL in January.
- 10:04The big ticket items 250 GTO that.
- 10:08White one that didn't. Dry.
- 10:13They've been pimping that thing out for, what, two years?
- 10:16Yeah, it did an. Amazing thing it's going.
- 10:18To be last year, wasn't it, Lindsay?
- 10:21Possibly. 250 GTA. It's been carried in the in
- 10:25Europe. Yeah, I think it was.
- 10:28I think it was at the Avant Classics on the Green over the
- 10:31summer. Quite probably, Yeah, quite
- 10:34probably. It's a a Pacific Northwest based
- 10:37car. Well, that would be.
- 10:39John Shirley. And it's a beautiful, beautiful
- 10:42car. And the beautiful car is it gets
- 10:44taken out. So Fred Russell, who's the the
- 10:48guy who looks after the car, gets to drive on behalf of the
- 10:51owner and he takes it to cars and coffee and stuff.
- 10:52So it'll be a real shame if it sells because it means it will
- 10:55leave the Pacific Northwest. Yeah.
- 10:57Yeah, yeah, yeah. Didn't we see that during car
- 10:59week though at Mecum? I'm not imagining that, right?
- 11:03I had never been to a Meekum auction before.
- 11:05You know, I, I, I don't want to say grown up watching Meekum
- 11:08auctions on television, but you know, I kind of did.
- 11:11And, and so it was interesting to actually go to a Meekum
- 11:14event. Who was I with?
- 11:17Was I not with you guys? No, I never.
- 11:20I must have been with Michael Assassin.
- 11:21Oh, Collin Sekle I think was. That Oh yeah, Collin.
- 11:24And so we did go and they wouldn't let us in without
- 11:28paying, even though it was like an hour that the auction was
- 11:32done and the doors were going to close and Albert was still to
- 11:35pay 20 bucks. And I had other media passes
- 11:38that no, no, everyone has to pay.
- 11:40So it's just kind of a different vibe.
- 11:42And they had that white car out in the middle of the field, you
- 11:45know, but it was surrounded by. So Meekum is different from any
- 11:48other auction I've ever been to because it's a spectrum of
- 11:52offerings, right? And so there they had that
- 11:54beautiful GTO, but then they had like, you know, the world's best
- 11:58Toyota Paseo, right? You know, a few cars down and,
- 12:01and then, you know, you really wanted that Monte Carlo s s you
- 12:04didn't get in high school. Well, you know, there are three
- 12:06of them. It's such a, it's such a, an
- 12:07amalgam of, of, of different types of cars.
- 12:11So yeah, it's it's an adventure for sure, but I don't know that
- 12:15I'd make a point of of going cross country for it.
- 12:19Yeah, it's interesting that because last year they had Jerry
- 12:24Seinfeld's 917. You guys.
- 12:26Remember the one from the film Le Mans, the Steve McQueen Carr?
- 12:31And that it didn't sell, but then sold privately?
- 12:34That's right. So they're getting a few big
- 12:36hitters. So yeah, I hear kissing.
- 12:39He's nice this time of year. Yeah, now I just wish they'd get
- 12:42rid of those shiny black golf shirts they all wear.
- 12:45They're they, they don't photograph well on television.
- 12:48Right. Well, if you're listening, if
- 12:50you could send one to Ryan, please.
- 12:51Yeah, we'll make sure he wears it on the show.
- 12:53That'll be his standard Dark Heart Go recording.
- 12:55Up blood sausage in one of those I'm just.
- 13:00Saying when we get the title, Yeah, haven't we?
- 13:04Who doesn't love blood sausage? We called it black pudding.
- 13:08Oh, black pudding. OK.
- 13:10Yeah. All right.
- 13:11I had to think about what you were talking about the first.
- 13:14And we did not really even hear. So other events in January, the
- 13:21start of the Dakar. So this is one of the world's
- 13:26most famous rally races. It used to be that it would
- 13:29start on New Year's Day in Paris, Paris, as they say, and
- 13:34it would drive down to Dakar in Africa.
- 13:37But they now move it around a lot.
- 13:39And I think it's starting in Saudi Arabia.
- 13:41But interestingly, which brand are going to be taking a Nook to
- 13:45there? Defender.
- 13:48Land Rover. Land Rover Different.
- 13:50Competing this year, aren't they?
- 13:51So we wish them the best of luck and you know, obviously they
- 13:55they've got a pretty cool car to do it in.
- 13:58Super cool, I like to. Attend.
- 14:01I got to Sarah Price at the Destination Defender.
- 14:05She's one of the official drivers.
- 14:07So I will be very closely. But yeah, Ryan, I would love to
- 14:11go to this too. So I think the consensus is
- 14:15right that Car Show would love to be there.
- 14:18Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, Sam Allen, who's who leads to the
- 14:21Defender brand here in in the States was on a couple episodes
- 14:24ago. If you if you missed it, go
- 14:25back, but kind of got me excited about, you know, Defenders and,
- 14:30and, and just the, you know, that event in particular.
- 14:32I mean, that's, that's one of those epic things, right?
- 14:34Like that's that's funny. We all grew up seeing footage,
- 14:37right, of those races and. OSHA 959, right?
- 14:40That was, yeah. That's iconic stuff.
- 14:43I mean, you know, there's the Dakar Porsche, right, or the
- 14:47Dakar or whatever you know, you want to call it.
- 14:49I mean it's that's a some of those iconic events, right?
- 14:52But I think so few people get to check that back box off right?
- 14:55It's, it's not like, you know, going to the Indy 500 or
- 14:59whatever, but. Which is also a good option.
- 15:03Yeah, jumping. Too far ahead?
- 15:04You were jumping too far ahead with a different one.
- 15:07Yeah, speaking. Indianapolis a little more
- 15:09accessible, yeah. Yeah, if we go to February, our
- 15:14friend Ferdie Porsche has his event in February, the FAT Ice
- 15:18racing. The big difference year on year
- 15:21is that it's moved. So I think it was in your neck
- 15:24of the woods, Ryan. It was, it was just outside of
- 15:27Aspen, I think Carbondale technically, but you know, all
- 15:30the, all the, all the, all the merch, said Aspen.
- 15:32Of course. I mostly went for the Porsche
- 15:35party, but it was it was fun. I mean, that was, you know,
- 15:39Aspen's always a trip anyway, right?
- 15:41It's the celeb sightings and and everything else.
- 15:44Remember the year I went, there really wasn't enough snow or
- 15:46ice, right? So they they had the event at a
- 15:50Christmas tree farm just outside of town.
- 15:52Like I said in in Carbondale and yeah, it's, again, it's one of
- 15:57those rich guy things, right? Like, you know, Paris to Dakar
- 15:59or whatever. It's like, you know, the vast
- 16:02majority of enthusiasts will never, you know, be able to
- 16:05participate or watch, you know, some of these events this year.
- 16:09It's up in Montana. Yeah.
- 16:12Yeah. So I don't know that.
- 16:14So I think last year there were two issues.
- 16:16One was the lack of snow and the other one was permitting.
- 16:21So they leased the grounds and they couldn't permit for lots of
- 16:24people. So it meant that they had to
- 16:26push the ticket prices up. My understanding is that this
- 16:29year they have the ability to sell multiple tickets.
- 16:33So it's going to become as much as Montana in February is
- 16:36accessible, it's going to become more accessible for the racing
- 16:41and then look out for some some famous folks in cars.
- 16:44So I know that Jeff Swartz signed up.
- 16:46Oh, there you go. And Matt Farah is taking his
- 16:49Myers minx. He is.
- 16:51OK, Cool. Yeah.
- 16:52That's amazing. Yeah.
- 16:55So there's a there's going to be a lot of YouTube social media
- 16:58stuff going on. Yeah.
- 16:59Yeah, it'll be a scene and it'll be heavily merchandised, a lot
- 17:04of puffy jackets and that kind of thing.
- 17:07I mean, it's it's I think it's less about the racing and, and
- 17:11more about the event, right scene and that kind of thing.
- 17:15But yeah, it's a cool thing. You know, again, it's like, you
- 17:18know, I don't know the, the, the, the, the Myers air, you
- 17:22know, boat plane and that I mean, it's this is just like
- 17:26another level different echelon of like, you know, passing time.
- 17:31And this is definitely in. That.
- 17:32Category. But if you if you get to go, you
- 17:35know it'll be great. I'm sure it'll be a a a blast
- 17:37and I'm sure the Porsche party will be fun too.
- 17:40So never seen a spread like the spread I saw at that Porsche
- 17:44party. Just like a conference table
- 17:47full of all. The mess of.
- 17:48Everything. Like yes.
- 17:50You Were you eating sushi off of naked women or.
- 17:54There were people dancing around playing electric violins.
- 17:59There were, wow. I don't know.
- 18:01It was. It was, Yeah.
- 18:02It was a scene, man. This was a hotel takeover by
- 18:06Porsche, right? And they even brought their own
- 18:08art in. Is that right?
- 18:10Really. Oh.
- 18:11I'll never forget. God, it's coming back to me now.
- 18:13Yeah, yeah. I enjoyed myself.
- 18:15So some of it is the memories are a little spotty, but shout
- 18:18out Dan McGinnis, who I think we mentioned on every show.
- 18:21I shared a room with him. He traded in a bunch of points.
- 18:24So we stayed at the hotel where the the party was.
- 18:27So you could fully enjoy the party.
- 18:30Fully enjoyed, you know, the bouncers they took, we got there
- 18:34a little early. And so we actually saw as they
- 18:36went through the whole hotel, took all the artwork, you know,
- 18:38the wild horses and the pine trees and all that down and
- 18:41replaced it all with, with the bespoke Porsche art, which I'd
- 18:44never seen, you know, So it was, it was definitely curated.
- 18:49Yeah. And ran into a shocking amount
- 18:52of people that I knew interested.
- 18:55Crazy thing. So it was a good time, but I
- 18:57saw. Very little.
- 18:58The actual racing, I will confess so.
- 19:01Well, it always looks like an amazing event.
- 19:03Like every time I see the pictures, you know, afterwards
- 19:06the the FOMO is very strong, which is not always the case.
- 19:09But yeah, it just, it looks like definitely, even if you only got
- 19:13to go once, like it's definitely something that would love to
- 19:16attend. Yeah, yeah, shout out Josh Fu,
- 19:19my friend from Minneapolis who I know is going.
- 19:21And hey, if I, if I can work something to figure something,
- 19:24I'll absolutely go. But Aspen was a little closer
- 19:27than Montana, so yeah. Well, if you're not really into
- 19:31the cold, what about the warm? The 24 Hours of Daytona?
- 19:34Lindsay, have you done this one? I have.
- 19:36I have been there three times. Yes, years ago the last time I
- 19:42was there I had a one year old with me.
- 19:44So it is definitely doable. It's very family friendly.
- 19:48You can, you can go the family friendly route or not, but it is
- 19:53again, it's another one that like you really need to
- 19:56experience it once in your lifetime and plan to stay up
- 20:00late because it's just cool to be there and see, you know, as
- 20:04they start racing into the night and the way that changes just
- 20:08the experience and you can walk around the track and see it
- 20:12from, you know, a lot of different angles and go up in
- 20:14the grandstands and. Ideally, if you have access, you
- 20:17get to go into the pits and see that and it's there.
- 20:22Again, like you were talking about different levels at the
- 20:24Fat Ice Rays, there are people that go and they camp in the
- 20:28infield at Daytona. So again, there's lots of
- 20:33different ways to experience it. And you know, if you've done a
- 20:3624 hour endurance event, it's, it's very unique to that type of
- 20:43experience. Like, it's not like anything
- 20:45else, but it's so cool you got to do it.
- 20:50My spies tell me the way to do it is to do it with Lamborghini.
- 20:53Lamborghini have a ticket that you get put up in the hotel
- 20:58which is next to the track. You get golf carted to the
- 21:02track, you then take an elevator up to an observation level and
- 21:07it's just you and the spotters for each team and you get to see
- 21:11the race from a really elevated position.
- 21:13So Lamborghini, if you're listening, I'm available and
- 21:17willing to cover it for that car show.
- 21:19I've got a couple of friends who you might bring with me.
- 21:23That's the way to do it. So you've got two options there.
- 21:25You can go for the cold and the ice racing, or you can go for
- 21:29hopefully the warmth of the the 24 Hours, which is the, I guess
- 21:32it's the American version of Le Mans, isn't it?
- 21:34Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 21:36I mean, it's a 24 hour, you know, endurance race.
- 21:39Yeah. I mean, yeah, with a lot of
- 21:42history, yeah. I mean in that track, you know,
- 21:45and you can see like when you go, they used to do part of that
- 21:49event, the Daytona racing used to be on the beach, the actual
- 21:52beach at Daytona. So there's a lot of you can see
- 21:55the historical photographs and kind of, you know, learn the
- 21:58history of how it has evolved in the area.
- 22:01And it's, yeah, again, there's so much history.
- 22:04Like when I was at Lamont. It's just you can feel it when
- 22:06you're there. And so you have to go and
- 22:09experience it. But I was going to say,
- 22:12depending on the calendar, why wouldn't you do both?
- 22:16Like do the cold and the warm, right?
- 22:20I mean it was a gap year or not. This is our gap year.
- 22:23We can do whatever we want. Yeah.
- 22:25It does seem like a lot of these events are on the East Coast
- 22:27though, because if I look into March, right, Amelia, which is
- 22:32Amelia Island, which is a concourse event and it's kind of
- 22:34like the first concourse of the year.
- 22:36Right. That's that's on the East Coast
- 22:39in Florida and and have you both been or is it just Ryan?
- 22:43Just Ryan. And I've only been once.
- 22:46I'm no expert. We went.
- 22:48It was a year and a half ago, two years ago on an.
- 22:52Electric car, that is that right?
- 22:56Yeah. I'm bringing back all.
- 22:57It's like a rippy session. For me, right?
- 23:01Yeah, In fact, I had reserved a pole star and was very
- 23:03disappointed when I showed up and they got a Kia electric.
- 23:07But that's OK because I ended up with I guess a pole star.
- 23:11But I. Was going to say the rest of the
- 23:13point is that you had to buy the car yourself.
- 23:18Yeah, Yeah, I was going to make it happen.
- 23:19That's the place, though, that they just at least at the time,
- 23:22two years ago, did not have the infrastructure for EV charging,
- 23:25especially when a large event is going on, it just doesn't exist.
- 23:30And so once you get outside of what is it, Jacksonville there,
- 23:34you know, and you, you drive, you know, a bit too, Amelia,
- 23:37that's that's kind of it. I recall there was one public
- 23:41charging place in the whole town.
- 23:43It had two 2 lines, 2 cords, whatever.
- 23:47It was owned by the city. It was like on the side of the
- 23:50City Hall and they were slow chargers.
- 23:52So it was what I have in my garage here.
- 23:55So I remember waiting until one freed up and then having to park
- 23:58the car and then lifting back to the hotel.
- 24:01It was a whole whole thing. I thought I was being slick.
- 24:04But as an event, it's a lot of fun.
- 24:06It it's, you know, there's some parallels to, to car week,
- 24:09right? Monterey and that kind of thing.
- 24:10But it's a much smaller scale. The you know, the Concord, the
- 24:15event was great. It's of course at, you know, the
- 24:17Amelia Island Golf Club. I think it is.
- 24:20It's a Ritz Carlton, if I'm not mistaken.
- 24:22I'll Fact Check that. And it's it's fun.
- 24:26But like I said, it rained the whole time we were there.
- 24:28I'd like to go back sometime when it's out.
- 24:32But it's an iconic location, right?
- 24:34It's it's definitely one of those things you have to do
- 24:37once. It's definitely a lot more low
- 24:39key than than than car week, right.
- 24:41So there's there's that. I think it'd be a fun trip for
- 24:43the three of us to go sometime. I'm game, yeah.
- 24:47Yeah, yeah, some good auction action and and that kind of
- 24:50thing. And, and a couple people have
- 24:52asked why I have the CBS Sunday Morning hat behind me.
- 24:57And that's because when I was there, CBS Sunday Morning were
- 25:01there, they were following the, the school in, in Kansas the
- 25:08that they went to. Oh, McPherson College.
- 25:13McPherson McPherson College So CBS Sunday Morning we're
- 25:16following McPherson College and that was the year that they had
- 25:19started with the car and, and brought it all the way to Amelia
- 25:24to be auctioned. And so it was.
- 25:26So anyway, I ended up talking to the guys and, and, and they gave
- 25:30me the hat, which is pretty cool because.
- 25:31I were you on TV? No, no, no, no, no.
- 25:34I just talked to them off the off the, you know, I think they
- 25:38came up to me and I looked as out of place as they did in that
- 25:40auction. And we kind of bonded on that or
- 25:45bounded over that, you know, and really nice people.
- 25:49But yeah, that's that's my Amelia Island.
- 25:52Memory and I was down the road last year from Amelia Island and
- 25:57they had a massive thunderstorm come in on the Sunday, so they
- 26:00actually brought everything forward.
- 26:02The. Event took place on the Saturday
- 26:06which the net net was. I was doing the Daytona 200
- 26:10which is the bike version of the Daytona.
- 26:13Flight. It's not a 24 hour race.
- 26:16It's, you know, it's an, an afternoon's race.
- 26:19But I, I got to the airport and basically everyone who was
- 26:23anyone from Amelia had come to the airport trying to get
- 26:30flights home early because there was a thunderstorm coming in and
- 26:32stuff. So there were people like Ralph
- 26:34Jills and people like that in the the lounge.
- 26:38But if you've not done the Daytona 200, it's a bike race
- 26:42that is 57 laps. And then the net result is the
- 26:46first three bikes are within seconds of each other after that
- 26:49number of laps and they have to do a pit stop.
- 26:51And it's a great event. So you could do both in theory
- 26:56if you wanted to, yeah. And then I threw in a wild trip
- 26:59that we could potentially take, which would be to go to the
- 27:02other side of the world and kick off the F1 season in Australia.
- 27:06Yeah. Does that sound perfect?
- 27:08Let's do it. So I'm just, yeah.
- 27:10Yeah, yeah, let's do it. We like Australians in
- 27:13Australia. Let's do it.
- 27:17I've never been would love to go sometime.
- 27:19I I think that would be a real adventure, right.
- 27:22I mean, just, I don't know. Yeah.
- 27:24Talk about like, you know, taking you out of the ordinary.
- 27:26And I think that would be killer.
- 27:29Have either of you been convert since Netflix?
- 27:32I have not, but I feel like maybe it's only because I
- 27:36haven't gone to kick off the season in Australia, so that's
- 27:39how I'm going to, you know, that would.
- 27:42Make me an F1 fan for life. Right.
- 27:45I just think it's so funny that all these people are like F1
- 27:48proclaimed fans and you know, their only real reference point
- 27:51is that a drama laden TV show on Netflix which has done a great
- 27:54job for the sport. Right.
- 27:57I kind of think they're experts and.
- 28:00There's so much more to it. On the Street is there might be
- 28:02another series gaining the Netflix Netflix spotlight soon
- 28:06so. Let's see.
- 28:08Stay tuned. No, that's all I can say.
- 28:11Watch it too much. Yeah.
- 28:14Watch this. Anyway, yeah, yeah, you nearly
- 28:18got some inside baseball, but not quite.
- 28:20It's the it's the, it's the race to be the best automotive
- 28:23podcast world and. We.
- 28:26Follow Fledgling. Feel like we're, we're the the
- 28:32winning tortoise, yeah. Lindsay.
- 28:38I think we need to get Ryan to drink a couple more glasses of
- 28:40red wine and we'll find out more about that.
- 28:41I was going to say yeah, unfortunately we're not.
- 28:44There isn't enough of the secret spilling juice yet, but yeah,
- 28:49we'll. Get that, come back to that
- 28:51later. Yeah, I've got a whole Kirkland
- 28:53large bottle of the truth serum in the in the house here, so.
- 28:58Perfect. Why?
- 28:59You know, that's what I want to know.
- 29:02You need those glasses. Where are you?
- 29:05And then one in your mouth. Yeah, here.
- 29:08We go well guys, you know, I went to the doctor recently and
- 29:11I got my blood tests and you know, I've got to cut back
- 29:14somewhere. So you know if this means I'm
- 29:15drinking red wine instead of burping, That's.
- 29:19I was going to say it is healthy.
- 29:21Choices, isn't it? That's.
- 29:22Healthy choice, right? You know.
- 29:24We have the paragons of health here at that car show, Yeah.
- 29:26That's that's yeah, that's a little bit.
- 29:28That car show is brought to you by Sheffield Watches.
- 29:31Sheffield is the storied watchmaking brand that was
- 29:33revived a couple of years back by her good friend Jay Turkbus,
- 29:36and it's seen wild success in both the car and watch
- 29:39enthusiast communities. Sheffield offers a wide
- 29:41selection of watches, many inspired by the iconic designs
- 29:44of its 1960s dive models, most notably the one that Jay's
- 29:48parents gave him in 1970, which ignited his lifelong passion for
- 29:51watches. Sheffield watches are high
- 29:53quality, reasonably priced and a great value.
- 29:56Sheffield has truly become the car guy and cargals watch of
- 30:00choice. Order your Sheffield watch at

- 30:06at Sheffield Under Score all Sport Under Score watches and
- 30:10tell them that car show sent you.
- 30:14Let's move on. So, so far we've done January,
- 30:16February, March, April, few different things in April and
- 30:20actually we get to go on the West Coast a little bit, so Long
- 30:24Beach Grand Prix. Has anyone done that?
- 30:27I have. Yes.
- 30:30Yep, and. Is it a street circuit?
- 30:35They so they create the circuit on the streets of Long Beach.
- 30:38So a lot of the streets are shut down to create the racetrack,
- 30:41which again, it makes it a really unique event.
- 30:43I think. I think that's what's so
- 30:45interesting is when you look at the automotive calendar across
- 30:48the board, like the variety of events and how different they
- 30:52are from each other, you could have a truly amazing year with
- 30:55so many different things. And, you know, I think that's
- 30:59what makes the Long Beach Grand Prix so cool is it's the track
- 31:05is built on the streets of Long Beach and you get real, real
- 31:10race drivers come and do the event.
- 31:12It's not, you know, this isn't like AI don't know what you'd
- 31:16call it, but like, it's a real event with real drivers.
- 31:18I think Jensen Button, I think was one of the drivers last
- 31:22year. I know like, Mario Andretti has
- 31:25driven there. Like if you can think of a
- 31:28driver, they've probably driven there at some point.
- 31:30I know Patrick Dempsey was driving years ago when he was
- 31:35before. You know, he's getting back into
- 31:37it now, but when he was actively racing, he drove there.
- 31:41That's and it's just cool because it's again like there's
- 31:45an infield and they have, you know, funnel cake and like fried
- 31:48Oreos. But then you can also be up in
- 31:50the suites where it's very elegant.
- 31:52So it's, again, there's a lot of variety.
- 31:55You can have whatever level you want and it's just cool.
- 31:59So yeah, I recommend it. You know, what I remember about
- 32:03the Long Beach Grand Prix growing up was that they always
- 32:06televised it. But more exciting was than the
- 32:08race itself was the Toyota Celica celebrity race with like
- 32:12Bruce Jenner and Alfonso Ribeiro, right?
- 32:14Like, you know, bumping into each other in these like, like
- 32:191988 Celicas or whatever. That was pretty cool.
- 32:23So if they were to bring that back, which cars would they use?
- 32:26Like happy 80 sixes, right? Yeah, could be fun.
- 32:31Yeah. It could be fun or it could be
- 32:34the car that you took on your road trip, Ryan.
- 32:38Everyone with a crown Insignia. Crown Insignia Celebrity race.
- 32:44I'd watch it. Would be something.
- 32:48Yeah, it would be more of an insurance race, wouldn't it?
- 32:52Uh huh. Yeah, yeah.
- 32:53That that car has a range of over 400 miles and it has a gas
- 32:58tank. I think that's 12 gallons.
- 33:00So you do the math. That that thing.
- 33:02Whoa, that thing. Yeah, I think we'll go.
- 33:06That's impressive. Ryan has just come back from his
- 33:08holiday travels in in this car, so he's got a first hand
- 33:13experience of, of what it was like and it sounds like it's
- 33:18it's one for the economy. Holiday makes it sound, you
- 33:22know, more glamorous than it is. Yeah, it was interesting.
- 33:26You know, it's not a bad car. The problem is, you know, no one
- 33:29knows about this thing. Toyota doesn't mark it as as the
- 33:32wagon that it is. Instead, they market it as a
- 33:34crossover, an SUV. And I think the other thing that
- 33:37doesn't quite work for me is that the Crown sedan is a lovely
- 33:40thing because it offers a 340 horsepower, 360 horsepower
- 33:45hybrid option. But the wagon, the bigger,
- 33:49heavier version, only comes with the smaller, the 236 horsepower
- 33:52powertrain. So and it's, and it's, you know,
- 33:56it's, I'm not a big fan of of hybrids outside of like the
- 34:00McLaren world, right? And you know.
- 34:04One has to have standards. Yeah, no, no, it's, it's a great
- 34:08car. It's I drove this thing so
- 34:10almost 2000 miles to Minneapolis and back with my family.
- 34:15It makes a lot of noise as it groans.
- 34:18You know, it takes some time, you know, entrance ramps, you
- 34:20know, on the highway and this kind of thing.
- 34:23All these things would have been solved by the bigger engine,
- 34:25which unfortunately you can't get.
- 34:28You know, it was, it was fine. It was a good car with gas is
- 34:31like 2-2 dollars in this part of the the country.
- 34:34Like here to Minneapolis. I think I saw as as low as $1.85
- 34:38for a gallon of regular gas. So I don't know that I spent
- 34:41$100 in gas over 2000 miles, which is just shocking.
- 34:46Someone will call me on that math, but but you know, as far
- 34:50as a family cruiser, it was it was good, but I think it would
- 34:54have been a really good car with a bigger engine.
- 34:57I learned on the last day I had it.
- 34:59If you engage sport mode, that solves a lot of the issues
- 35:01because you know, it accelerates a little more quickly.
- 35:05You know, the engine doesn't turn off at at at every, you
- 35:07know, stop light this kind of. Thing.
- 35:10But how can you argue with, you know, 31 miles to the gallon or
- 35:13whatever it was, you know, you know, and this you know, the
- 35:16highway, the, the speed is either the, the, the speed limit
- 35:19is 80 miles an hour on part of this trip.
- 35:21So you're doing 85 or 90 or more or whatever, right?
- 35:24So the fact that we achieved 31 miles.
- 35:26Allegedly. That's right.
- 35:28That's right. Yeah.
- 35:29You know, it, it didn't enjoy it, but it did, It did do it.
- 35:34I, I think, you know, like all these trips, sometimes, you
- 35:36know, it's less about the car and more about the journey.
- 35:40And this time we opted just for, you know, I'll write an article
- 35:43for Autoblog. So I need different locations
- 35:44for, for photos and this kind of thing.
- 35:46So this time we came back through South Dakota as opposed
- 35:49to to Nebraska and we got to see such wonders as the world's
- 35:54largest Jolly Green Giant statue.
- 35:58It's the the the vegetable brand is is in southwestern Minnesota.
- 36:02So we got a picture with that. We someone on Instagram, though,
- 36:08said the other day they said America is giving off dead, dead
- 36:12mall vibes at the moment, right. And that's all like, I thought
- 36:15that was such a perfect sort of, you know, and that's the kind of
- 36:18the vibe we got the whole way back driving across South Dakota
- 36:21and western Nebraska and some of these parts of the country
- 36:23where, you know, the towns are dying and it's just, you know,
- 36:28the towns are few and far between.
- 36:29And, and it was just, it was a, it was a little tougher to find
- 36:34places to take pictures right on this, on this route, if you can
- 36:38believe it, you know, versus Nebraska.
- 36:43So it was, you know, we, we stopped at one place.
- 36:46It was the, we said, what is this memorial on the side of the
- 36:49road looks like a War Memorial or something from like, you
- 36:51know, post Soviet Russia or something, you know, and it was
- 36:55a, a giant memorial because in 1974, this small town where we
- 37:01had stopped was the was the location of the World Plowing
- 37:05Championship. Who knew?
- 37:08I guess who knew? So I got a picture of that.
- 37:12But, you know, it was just, it was, you forget that there's a
- 37:15whole world outside of Los Angeles or Seattle or even
- 37:17Denver, right? And most people, you know, are,
- 37:21are living a life that is, is very different from the ones we
- 37:25live and live in the cars we do and all that.
- 37:27And so it was a real sort of really brought me back down to
- 37:30earth, both the car and the journey.
- 37:32So, yeah, some some niggling small things about this car, a
- 37:35lot of wind noise from the windows at higher speeds.
- 37:38The engine will get you there, but it just doesn't sound like
- 37:41it's, you know, enjoying the the process.
- 37:43A lot of groans and, and just things turning on and off and
- 37:47that kind of thing. What else?
- 37:49Seats are really comfortable. I got to give Toyota a ton of
- 37:52credit for improving seats. A generation ago, I could not
- 37:55get comfortable in any Toyota seat.
- 37:58I know that they've put a lot of money into making better seating
- 38:01and it and it shows. I think might be my biggest
- 38:04disappointment about the car was the ride we had stopped at, you
- 38:09know, Costco, you know, with the car had that the back hatch full
- 38:12of groceries and you hit a bump and it like all the groceries
- 38:17like levitate for a second and they come back down.
- 38:19It was just you. Know the damping.
- 38:20Or whatever it just seemed. Yeah.
- 38:22Yeah. You know, just, I haven't.
- 38:26Yeah. Well, I hadn't experienced that
- 38:27in a car in years. Right.
- 38:29I mean, most cars now are pretty buttoned down, even if they have
- 38:32a a hard ride. But you know that that was.
- 38:36And then there's one section of I-80 in northeastern Colorado.
- 38:40If any of you listening travel this, you know where it is, it's
- 38:42near Sterling. It's 20 miles of some of the
- 38:44roughest pavement, you know, in the Interstate.
- 38:46It's the the roughest 20 miles of anything between here and
- 38:49Minneapolis. And that's saying something.
- 38:50Minneapolis is not known for good roads.
- 38:52And there is this section, it's 20 miles long or so.
- 38:55And it's almost unbearable. It used to be you get in the
- 38:57passing lane and kind of hang out there if you had to and it
- 38:59was a little smoother. But now they're both really
- 39:01rough. And what I thought was
- 39:02interesting was 4 weeks ago for Thanksgiving, we had this
- 39:05Genesis GV 70, which I really enjoyed and that ride, and it's
- 39:09not the best riding car in the world, but we thought they had
- 39:11repaired that stretch of Rd. because we didn't feel the bumps
- 39:13at all. And then the Toyota, it was just
- 39:16bone rattling. And so I don't know if that that
- 39:19means the Toyota doesn't have a great ride or the Genesis had an
- 39:21exceptionally good ride, but that was something else, you
- 39:25know, but it's a good looking thing.
- 39:27I've heard this car described as like a Lexus on a budget.
- 39:31It is not. It doesn't have that refined
- 39:33driving experience. What it really is, is it's the
- 39:36replacement for the Toyota Venza.
- 39:38If you remember, if you remember.
- 39:39Yeah, if you remember the Venza. So the Crown sedan effectively
- 39:44replaced the Avalon and this replaced the Venza.
- 39:47And so, you know, it's, it's it's got a bit of an identity
- 39:51crisis. That said, I think if they
- 39:53marketed it as a wagon, get a lot more attention.
- 39:56I don't think most people know this car existed.
- 39:57It wasn't until we went to the LA Auto Show and we saw a very
- 40:00sleek black one that caught our eye.
- 40:03So a good car. I think it's probably the right
- 40:06car for a lot of a lot of people.
- 40:09But it doesn't have an enthusiast bone in its body,
- 40:12right? And you know, the three of us,
- 40:14we kind of come at this from a different angle than most
- 40:17people. But I got to see again, you
- 40:19cannot argue with 31 miles to the gallon over a 2000 mile trip
- 40:22on, you know, 85, you know, 90 per mile per hour.
- 40:26You know highways and this kind of thing.
- 40:28It you know, decent JBL stereo, yeah, Apple play all the all the
- 40:33you know, the mod cons. It's just, it's, it's it, it's,
- 40:39it's, it's, it's perfect at what it is, but it's figuring out
- 40:43what it is, if that makes sense. Well, thank you, Ryan for taking
- 40:46one for the team so we didn't have to try it.
- 40:49You've tried it on our behalf. I wanted to share an anecdote
- 40:53because I posted last week your comment on my Instagram about
- 41:01the Genesis and one of my followers, Henry, shout out to
- 41:05Henry said. We used to have them as company
- 41:07cars when I worked for a large scale car dealership and we used
- 41:11to call them Korean Bentleys. So the genesis will forever be
- 41:16known as the Korean Bentley I. Love it.
- 41:20Like and it kind of works. It's kind of what it is.
- 41:23It's kind of what it is. And I I kept thinking, you know,
- 41:25that that GV 70 had had the big motor had 360 horsepower,
- 41:29whatever it was, had the six, but they also make a 4 cylinder
- 41:32that still I think makes more power than this Toyota and
- 41:35probably would have not been too far off in in in.
- 41:39Let it go, Rowan, let it go. You've done it.
- 41:42Move on. Let it go.
- 41:45Let's get back to the event schedule because there's a lot
- 41:48of time to cover. I think our gap year is going
- 41:51pretty well so far, right? So, so far we've been.
- 41:54We've been to Paris, we've potentially been to Saudi
- 41:56Arabia, we've been to Montana, we've been to Florida, we've
- 42:00been to Melbourne in Australia, we've been to Long Beach.
- 42:07How about the Cali? Yeah, the Cali melee.
- 42:12Have you guys heard of this event?
- 42:14Oh yeah, the Cal melee. Yep.
- 42:16Yeah. Have we done it?
- 42:18I have not, but it is on my list.
- 42:20It looks incredible. So this is a classic car rally
- 42:25in California hosted by Haggerty.
- 42:28And are there any prerequisites to bring a car?
- 42:31Do you know? I think it's 58 and older.
- 42:35If I'm not mistaken. It was Derek Tam Scott and
- 42:38Tatsio Otis who had just had done it, and they were sort of
- 42:40comparing and contrasting to the Grand Colorado Grand, which is
- 42:43probably its closest sort of the analog, but apparently it's much
- 42:48more A to A than A to B, for better or worse.
- 42:53Can you explain what you mean by that?
- 42:55Yeah, so the grand we go, you know, we go from town to town
- 42:58for the most part, not always, but for the most part.
- 43:01And from the way Derek and, and, and Tatio described, it seemed
- 43:05to be much more tighter roads, twisty roads, but maybe more
- 43:12from, you know, you start and stop in the same place, right?
- 43:15You spend the night in the same place kind of thing.
- 43:17But it's supposed to be wonderful.
- 43:18I mean, you know, everything Haggerty does is, is is top, you
- 43:21know, top notch and all that. Haggerty also sponsors the
- 43:24Colorado Grand, but Haggerty runs the calmile, right, So I'd
- 43:28love to do it. I mean, I, I adore the Colorado
- 43:31grand, you know, won't shut up about it.
- 43:33And I think this is probably, you know, the closest sort of
- 43:36thing and they with with different terrain and geography
- 43:38and all that. So I I would absolutely love to
- 43:40do the vent right if you're. Lindsay, what would you want to
- 43:43do it in? Oh I would do it in a 289 Cobra.
- 43:49There you go. There we go.
- 43:51Default. That's pretty standard.
- 43:52Yeah, but. It's a good a good car, right
- 43:55They're. Going to be shocked with that
- 43:56answer. I, I think that car would be
- 43:58really suited to the roads that they do and you know, I had the
- 44:03chance to work on some of the some of the elements of that
- 44:08event when I was working with the events team for Haggerty.
- 44:12So I know kind of the thought and care that goes into it.
- 44:14And for those that know Dave Horde, he works with them and
- 44:19puts together the actual route. And like Dave is a perfectionist
- 44:24and he loves driving and he's a true enthusiast.
- 44:26So I know, you know, whatever he puts together, they're
- 44:30spectacular drives. And then the level of, you know,
- 44:34accommodation on the food and all of that.
- 44:36Like I feel like every year after the event, everybody says
- 44:40like they've they've somehow surpassed what they've done in
- 44:44the past years, which we didn't think was possible because it's
- 44:46such a lovely event. So it just, it just looks
- 44:49magical. And the plan like, yeah, it's
- 44:52definitely on my list of goals to do that one day.
- 44:55Or automotive bucket list, I guess you could say.
- 44:59Nice. We've got another one to do, so
- 45:01it's good to. We've got the balance now of
- 45:02East Coast and West Coast in May 1 of the Triple Crown, the Indy
- 45:09500. And Ryan, I think you grew up in
- 45:11Indy, didn't you? I did never actually went to the
- 45:14race, but every year we'd go to the time trials that.
- 45:17Kind of thing from Game of Thrones, which is going shame,
- 45:20shame. Well, you have to remember the
- 45:25Indy 500 of the 80s, right? When I was a kid, I think was a
- 45:28very the, the crowds they drew, I think were probably, you know,
- 45:32they still draw giant crowds, but I think they were, the
- 45:34crowds are twice as big as they are now, right?
- 45:36They had this snake pit. It was a whole thing, a parade
- 45:39downtown. You know, I remember seeing
- 45:42David Hasselhoff, who was the the parade.
- 45:45Was he? The Grand Marshall one.
- 45:47The Grand Marshall, that's what. That's a job, you know, so it
- 45:51was a big, big deal, probably a bigger deal then even than it is
- 45:53now. That said, I've never been to
- 45:54the actual race, but we go every year for time trials and that
- 45:57kind of thing and we were on a budget right at uh, family of
- 46:01four kind of thing and and I, I just, I thought it was great.
- 46:04I mean it's, that's one of those, you know, top five
- 46:08automotive, you know, Motorsports events, right.
- 46:10I mean, I think by anyone's, you know, reasoning and you know,
- 46:14it's Jim neighbors used to, you know, Gomer Pyle used to sing
- 46:18for like 50-60 years. He's saying that the national
- 46:20anthem or whatever it was or no, it was the IT was back home
- 46:24again in Indiana is what it was. He'd sing that it was it was an
- 46:26event, right? I mean, it was you.
- 46:28Know how does that go, Ryan? Like I also don't know.
- 46:33The rule? That one.
- 46:34Maybe I'll, maybe I'll add it. Oh, I know the words.
- 46:40Everything is ever living hard out too.
- 46:43Lindsay, have you been to this one and have you sung the
- 46:45Indiana song? No, and not yet.
- 46:51Don't worry Dean, the Counting Crows will sing it on some.
- 46:54You know, let's do holiday carry.
- 46:57On So that's the Indy 500 and then if you want to bring some
- 47:02sophistication to the month, right Villageste, which is
- 47:07definitely a bucket list item, but have you guys done this one?
- 47:11No, I just keep living vicariously through my friends
- 47:13like Laura and Johnny and Bassam and just gobbling up their
- 47:17pictures when they go because it just looks like another, you
- 47:21know, magical bucket list event. I mean, the setting itself is
- 47:25just absolutely stunning. And then the cars that it
- 47:29attracts, and again, that's another one that people travel
- 47:32from all over the world to be there for.
- 47:35I think that's the one that Spike always jokes about when he
- 47:38went and somebody said, what are you doing here?
- 47:40So, right, that tells you the level of I think we have we, we
- 47:48may have a little more work to do with.
- 47:50What I'm hearing, I got to say Harry met, recognized.
- 47:54Yeah, right. What have we got?
- 47:56This is on the side of Lake Garda right I believe.
- 48:00I don't know, that's just proof I shouldn't be there.
- 48:04Our research department. I would have said Lake Helmo,
- 48:07but I may be wrong. Yeah, I would have.
- 48:09I would have said too. But it's Harry Metcalf who I
- 48:12think is like the coolest dude in Italy.
- 48:14He goes every year, he he talks it up, he makes it look really
- 48:18good. Of course he drives his like
- 48:19Countach down or whatever from the UK wouldn't quite be the
- 48:22same experience rolling up in a, you know, a seiat or something.
- 48:26But you know, I want to. Right, Lake Como.
- 48:30Lake Como. Every now and then we know what
- 48:33we're talking about. There we go.
- 48:36Ari Norton does a great video every year on the DACA so you
- 48:39know, not that we forever promoting other people's YouTube
- 48:42channels, but yeah check it out. It's my favorite story about
- 48:47Villideste is when they landed the Myers Manx plane.
- 48:53Yeah, how cool is that? That's.
- 48:57Pretty much the definition of cool that a you own, among other
- 49:01things, the Myers Manx company that B you have your own airline
- 49:05called Manx Air. I think it is a Manx Airways,
- 49:08right? And that that that plane is, is
- 49:13a plane that can land on Lake Como.
- 49:15And it's just, I mean, you guys saw the video a couple three
- 49:20years ago, Jay Leno. There's a a glass sort of
- 49:22secondary cockpit in the nose of the plane.
- 49:24You know, that you can open as you land and then I guess I
- 49:27don't know, you know, do a dive into the lake or something right
- 49:31when you land. But come on, I mean, that's kind
- 49:33of that's that's kind of quintessential cool, right?
- 49:36There, let's go on to June. June.
- 49:41June. Yeah, it's been an amazing year
- 49:44so far. It's a big year.
- 49:46June has one of our favorite events of the year, and you only
- 49:50do it right if you do it with a Deisty and it's a Pike.
- 49:53'S peak, that's true. That's the one.
- 49:56That's the one, yeah. Yeah, they are the royal family
- 49:59on this. No, wait, Dan, you came here.
- 50:00We, yeah, that's, yeah, yeah, that's right.
- 50:02We did that one. Together, Pike's Peak is the
- 50:04hill climb event in Colorado. It goes up to just over 14,000
- 50:08feet. It's an all day event.
- 50:11You have a couple of options. You either go and you position
- 50:15yourself at the bottom of the start finish and you get to see
- 50:19all the cars as they start and leave the race, or you position
- 50:23yourself halfway at the mountain.
- 50:25You get better views but you're stuck there all day and we went
- 50:30and lessons were learnt. The first lesson was you don't
- 50:33need to be up at 3:00 AM in order to get on the mountain.
- 50:39But I think we're first in line. We were first in line.
- 50:42We were the first to fall asleep in the car on the mountain, but
- 50:46we thought we were playing the system, whatever.
- 50:49Because we had press passes, we were able to get on the mountain
- 50:52early, but actually that didn't give us a lot of value to do.
- 50:59I have a soft spot for Pikes Peak.
- 51:01It's run by wonderful people. It's a really neat event with
- 51:05crazy history. And I mean, there's really just
- 51:08nothing else like it. And I think driving it would be
- 51:12an experience of a lifetime. Shout out, John, Johnny
- 51:14Lieberman. I mean, that takes, you know, it
- 51:17takes balls. You know, that said, it's not
- 51:20the easiest thing to spectate, right?
- 51:23And, you know, so I don't feel compelled to go every year
- 51:26because of that. But that's one of those, you
- 51:29know, you got to go once, check it off, you know, your list.
- 51:33But it's, it's, it's, it's a, it's, it's a commitment to your
- 51:38point, Dan, because you spend the whole day there.
- 51:40There's not a lot in the way of facilities and that kind of
- 51:43thing. You don't know what the weather
- 51:44is going to do sometimes. You know, I think like this last
- 51:47year, they, they, you know, they think they only did the first
- 51:49stage of what, 3 or 4 stages or whatever it is, you know, so
- 51:53there's so many unknowns and like variables and, and all
- 51:56that. And so it's, I think it's really
- 51:58hard to get like the perfect Pikes Peak experience.
- 52:02That said, it's one of those things I think I take for
- 52:03granted because it's in my backyard, you know, and people
- 52:07travel from all over the world to go.
- 52:09But yeah, it's, it's, it's one of those legendary Motorsports
- 52:14events that you got to see once, right?
- 52:16Yeah. And Lindsay, you nearly came
- 52:20with this one year. That's right.
- 52:22But I think that was probably common sense, knowing that we
- 52:24were going to do it wrong, but then we did it right just to, to
- 52:28balance it out. We, we started off a bit rough,
- 52:31but then we got there. But would you go?
- 52:34Oh absolutely, especially now that you guys have learned all
- 52:37the lessons. Yeah, the hard way.
- 52:40Right, I figured I'd you guys fine tune.
- 52:44It Ford Edge with. A Ford Edge, right?
- 52:47Ford Edge, Yeah. Does that sound like a
- 52:50comfortable place? To sleep.
- 52:52I was in the trunk and wasn't I that the trunk door?
- 52:57Open. The wind was coming in.
- 52:59I was there, comfortable, cozy, sleeping.
- 53:03Yeah. That.
- 53:05Was that's the commercial that the Ford Edge has been missing?
- 53:08Exactly. Yes, if you're listening
- 53:11forward. The best memories, right?
- 53:14And there's their table. Yeah.
- 53:16Yeah, exactly. We won't talk about the great
- 53:19camera incident of that here. But you did get more we.
- 53:23Were still early. We were still early.
- 53:26Let's move on. That tells you how much too
- 53:29early you were, yeah. So Lamont.
- 53:34Lamont is a pilgrimage. It is.
- 53:38We've talked about the Indy 500 being one of the Triple Crown.
- 53:41Lamont is another one of the three Triple Crown events.
- 53:44I think, Lindsay, you were the most recent to be there from all
- 53:47of us. You were eating ice cream with
- 53:49Chris Harris, Jim. Farley, yeah.
- 53:52Jim Farley, what was the what was the experience like for you
- 53:55last year? I mean, it was again, like one
- 53:59of those once in a lifetime, like it was just tremendous
- 54:03because it's, you know, and I've said this before, but you,
- 54:07there's so much history and energy there even before the
- 54:11crowd got there because of the races that have happened and,
- 54:15and the, you know, there have been some big tragedies there.
- 54:18There have been some amazing triumphs there.
- 54:21The, you know, so many of the big names have raced there.
- 54:26And I think, you know, there's all these kind of like pivotal
- 54:31moments. And I'm blanking on the driver,
- 54:34of course, but the driver who they used to do the running
- 54:37start and they would have to run to the car and get in.
- 54:39And you know, the legend is like, oh, and they wouldn't, the
- 54:41safety belts wouldn't be on until the 1st lap was completed.
- 54:45And there was a driver who protested and he said, this is
- 54:49crazy. Like we're, we're not even being
- 54:51able to use the safety equipment that's in there for us.
- 54:53So he walked to his car and buckled in and took off and
- 54:57ended up placing in the race. And you know, I, my apologies
- 55:01that of course I'm blanking. This is too tired from Christmas
- 55:05and all of it. But, you know, and obviously the
- 55:08Mercedes crash that happened and then, yeah, just.
- 55:12Shelby winning there. Right there, Shelby, you know,
- 55:15and then going back in 2017 and winning again, you know, 50
- 55:19years after the first time. And so there's just there's so
- 55:23much history that has happened there.
- 55:25And then, you know, because it is a pilgrimage.
- 55:29So many of the people like you go, you go to a lot of trouble
- 55:32to be there. And people come from all over
- 55:35the world. You know, we parked on the
- 55:38second day next to a restaurateur who had driven over
- 55:41from England I think that morning.
- 55:45And you know, there's people from the States all over and
- 55:47just all over the world. So it's this amazing melting pot
- 55:51of a crowd who are all there. You know, again, it's like we
- 55:54talked about this cars or the common ground that kind of bring
- 55:57us all together. And this is a pretty spectacular
- 56:00bringing together. And then the Ferris wheels, like
- 56:03you can go up in the Ferris wheel and watch the race.
- 56:05So it's just, again, it's such a unique experience because Dan,
- 56:10when were you there? I was there.
- 56:13I think it was 2006, I think, But it's interesting because it
- 56:17was the same year that Corvette won and Bruce Mayer has that
- 56:22car. So what was quite cool is I was
- 56:25in the stands watching that car win and now Bruce has it so.
- 56:28Right. And now it's very tough to.
- 56:31You. Yeah.
- 56:31I mean, in the pantheon of Motorsports events, that's got
- 56:34to be pretty close to the top, right?
- 56:37Yeah. I think so, yeah, I think so.
- 56:39I mean, it's the Triple Crown, isn't it, right.
- 56:41That's what you got to think about.
- 56:43And it's. And for me, Monaco doesn't do
- 56:47anything for me. Like I think that's a place
- 56:49where you you got to be seen. You don't go to see the racing.
- 56:52Yeah, that's not on the list. Yeah.
- 56:54It's either it's for me, it's either the Indy 500, which I'm
- 56:57yet to experience or the long, which I have, Yeah.
- 57:02Well, someone else who's yet to experience the Indy 500 so close
- 57:07so many times. Yeah, But that would be that
- 57:09would be an easy one. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 57:11Get a Super 8 in Indianapolis. It'd be a cheap, you know, cheap
- 57:15party. That'd be fun, I think.
- 57:16That's it's like growing up near anything though, you know, like
- 57:19I grew up not far from Disneyland and people would say
- 57:21like, oh, I bet you went all the time.
- 57:23And I'm like, we went a couple times.
- 57:27It's, you know, you get jaded to whatever you're growing up next
- 57:30to, I think. Yeah.
- 57:31That's true. Let me.
- 57:31See your doorstep. So the recommendation is that
- 57:34you stay in Europe after them on and in July you go to the
- 57:39Goodwood Festival of Speed. You guys have or haven't done
- 57:44it? I have not done the Festival of
- 57:46Speed, but you have correct. Yes, I went two years ago.
- 57:51I think the top tips for the Festival of Speed is it's an
- 57:53amazing event. It's a hill climb with lots of
- 57:57manufacturers there releasing cars.
- 58:00It is so incredibly busy. So the first tip is go on the
- 58:04first day if you can, which is the quieter day of the weekend.
- 58:08Second tip is just get some grandstand tickets or get some
- 58:10sort of access. I was super lucky because I had
- 58:14a driver's medallion which got me into the driver's lounges and
- 58:18stuff. Like the Americans don't seem to
- 58:20have a word for black. It's like like cajole.
- 58:24Maybe I managed to cajole a driver's pass, but even what was
- 58:30that? I think probably the equivalent
- 58:33would be you wrangled one or. Wrangled.
- 58:36Yeah, but no horses were involved.
- 58:38No, but it's. Yeah, you've got to do it, like
- 58:43with a grandstand seat, I think. And the other tip is don't just
- 58:48stay at the bottom of the hill. There's a rally stage at the top
- 58:52of the hill, and that's where a lot of, like, Heroes, idols hang
- 58:56out. So when we were up there,
- 58:58Andreas Prenigo was up there, Travis Pastrana was up there,
- 59:04Mcrae's. So some of the McRae family were
- 59:06up there. So it's a, it's a separate rally
- 59:09stage and separate event. You don't need a different
- 59:12ticket. You just take the, the truck up
- 59:14there. They do a, a tractor with like
- 59:17the pulls a trailer and you get on that and you go up to the top
- 59:19of the hill. So a hayride there we go, get
- 59:24good access. Go early on the Thursday if you
- 59:26can and allow for extra time because it's going to be
- 59:29freaking busy. But it's a great event.
- 59:32It's up there for me. I've never been.
- 59:33I want to do that, of course. And you know the other good good
- 59:37Rd. event? The.
- 59:39Yeah, the revival. Revival, Revival.
- 59:42Can't you know? That's the one that's up to one
- 59:44or two. I don't.
- 59:44Have on this list, but we can talk about that in September.
- 59:47Yeah, you know, my bucket's getting bigger.
- 59:50I. Know.
- 59:51Older, you know it's time to check off.
- 59:52Some good stuff, good job. You're doing a gap year, isn't
- 59:55it really? This is the solution to
- 59:57everything, right? Yeah.
- 1:00:00So I was thinking while you're in the UK, one thing that I am
- 1:00:04desperate to do is something called the North Coast 500.
- 1:00:08So in essence what that is, is that is a 500 mile drive around
- 1:00:14the outskirts of Scotland. That sounds.
- 1:00:17So you know, you can't guarantee good weather in the UK, but I
- 1:00:21guess July is as best as any. So take yourself up to Scotland
- 1:00:26and do that trip. I believe there's lots of
- 1:00:28distilleries on the way, right? I know you've know you've
- 1:00:32converted to wine and it's probably not very good for wine
- 1:00:35up there, but maybe you can, like when you're on vacation.
- 1:00:38It doesn't count, right? Yeah, you can get it.
- 1:00:42That's on the list. Yeah, closest I've gotten are
- 1:00:46YouTube videos, right? You know, travel, you know
- 1:00:48writers, you know Youtubers. But looks awesome.
- 1:00:50I'd love to do it sometime. Check it out.
- 1:00:53It's called the North Coast 500. Then we move into August and
- 1:00:57really there's only one event that you know anyone.
- 1:01:00Should be out. In August, right?
- 1:01:03It's it's the La Jolla Concourse.
- 1:01:06No, it's not. It's Monterey Carwie.
- 1:01:09No, there's something wrong. With that, I thought it was San
- 1:01:12Bernardino Concourse. Show and shine.
- 1:01:16Yes, San Bernardino, Show and shine.
- 1:01:18You can't miss that though. I love No money.
- 1:01:21Yeah, your local Sonic Burger. It's a new T-shirt.
- 1:01:26Isn't it? Yeah.
- 1:01:27San Bernardino show and shine. Yeah.
- 1:01:31So Carl Week, we've all done it and we've all been there.
- 1:01:35I think it's getting a bad Rep lately, but I'm not sure that's
- 1:01:38deserved, right? Favorite memories from Carl Week
- 1:01:43any year. How much time do you have?
- 1:01:46Yeah, not that much, Lindsay, right?
- 1:01:48I know it's just the. Mothership, you know.
- 1:01:50It is, I would say when we got to commentate the races a couple
- 1:01:54years ago, that was pretty incredible.
- 1:01:56Like I I don't know that we'll ever top that.
- 1:01:59That was. Just so that folks are aware,
- 1:02:01Laguna Seca kindly gave us press passes for the weekend and then
- 1:02:06they asked us at the sort of 11th hour would we be interested
- 1:02:11in commentating on some of the races.
- 1:02:12They had a professional commentator but wanted some
- 1:02:16support and who are asked to stand in the way of a a great
- 1:02:19opportunity. So you guys were live on YouTube
- 1:02:22to 40,000 people? Yeah, the good.
- 1:02:25One, we got to hang out with Jonathan Green, who is such a
- 1:02:29pro and, and just chat with him and I will never forget walking
- 1:02:33into the booth, you know, and definitely having like the worst
- 1:02:37case of imposter syndrome. And he's just such a pro And he
- 1:02:41was like, we're just going to talk.
- 1:02:43I'm so glad you guys are here. We're going to have a good time,
- 1:02:46no stress. We're just going to have a
- 1:02:47conversation. And it was like, this is just so
- 1:02:50much fun and he's so cool. Yeah, I so that was definitely,
- 1:02:56you know, peak memory. Well, especially because the
- 1:02:59race that I did, I got to commentate it with Jonathan and
- 1:03:02my dad. And my dad looked at me and he
- 1:03:04said, you know, if you had told me the first time that we came
- 1:03:06to the races, which really it wasn't car week even at that
- 1:03:10point. It was in 1997.
- 1:03:12And it was really just the vintage races and Pebble and
- 1:03:17quail. And it's obviously developed
- 1:03:19into this, you know, week to 10 day long event at this point.
- 1:03:22But he said, yeah, if you had told me when we first came up
- 1:03:25here that at one point we would be in the broadcast booth, I
- 1:03:28would have said you were nuts. And here we are.
- 1:03:31Yeah, that it was special. It really was.
- 1:03:34I, I, I've still my, my mind's blown that that actually
- 1:03:38happened. And it was thanks to you, right?
- 1:03:41And Alicia Busa, who was who was there at the time at your point,
- 1:03:45I wasn't gonna say no, right? No.
- 1:03:47And, you know, you know, like of the three of us, I probably know
- 1:03:52the least about motorsport, right?
- 1:03:53You know, it's just how it is. I'm a Canyon guy, right?
- 1:03:57You know, I mean, I just, I kind of come at it from a different
- 1:03:59angle and. Racing.
- 1:04:01Has never been a huge part of of, yeah, you know, and that's
- 1:04:05fine, but but then you're at Laguna Seca and you're going to
- 1:04:08commentate a race. And then I found out it was F1
- 1:04:12cars of the Andretti era or something, which I of all the
- 1:04:15cars, I probably knew the least, right?
- 1:04:18Talk about a niche slice of motorsport, yeah?
- 1:04:21Yeah, I just don't want to embarrass myself, right.
- 1:04:24I just didn't want to embarrass myself and I don't think I did.
- 1:04:26I tried to get a couple jokes and I remember that.
- 1:04:28And, you know, you're taking a risk because you don't know if
- 1:04:30they're going to hit or fall flat or, or whatever.
- 1:04:32But it was such that was that's in my, you know, that's one of
- 1:04:37those experiences I'll never forget.
- 1:04:38It was truly special. I'll never do it again.
- 1:04:40I'll never want to do it again, but I'm so glad that I did it.
- 1:04:44It was really, really cool. Have you, have you so have you
- 1:04:46ever like looked up the the footage to like on YouTube or
- 1:04:50whatever to to? Find Oh, I've.
- 1:04:51Listened to it race. Have you OK?
- 1:04:53Oh. Yeah, I'm in my whole family.
- 1:04:59What do you what insomnia? God, in the race I I commentated
- 1:05:05had Jensen had some real notable people in it too, right?
- 1:05:11So, you know, it was, I don't remember anymore McLaren's.
- 1:05:16Zac Brown. See Zac Brown and and I think
- 1:05:20our Ford friend was there as what wasn't he driving?
- 1:05:22Following maybe Jensen was that, Yeah.
- 1:05:25It was just, it was, yeah, I don't even remember.
- 1:05:28It was a blur, but it was amazing.
- 1:05:30And it was a good blur. Though we talk, yeah, we talk
- 1:05:32about the things, you know, that we've gotten to do because of
- 1:05:34this show and, you know, previous things that we've done.
- 1:05:37And it's hard to believe the things we've weaseled our
- 1:05:39weight, right? That's one of them.
- 1:05:42Yeah, anyway. Yeah, Car week is.
- 1:05:44Only if only Meekum had known that week.
- 1:05:50But kind of a big dinner. Laguna Saika I.
- 1:05:53Know, I know. Apparently my commentating.
- 1:05:57Batmobiles. Isn't enough.
- 1:06:01That was just one highlight I mean, we could go do a whole
- 1:06:03show on car week, couldn't we? But, you know, both of you,
- 1:06:08indeed, both of you, if you're going out of your comfort zones
- 1:06:10and, you know, stepping up and being on the mic.
- 1:06:13So it's fun. Yeah.
- 1:06:14And take a listen to the shows that we've done around Carl Week
- 1:06:17because there's a lot more experiences.
- 1:06:18But we probably need to move on, right?
- 1:06:21September. Nothing happens in September,
- 1:06:23does it? That's the Quiet 1.
- 1:06:26So I can see Ryan getting redder and redder.
- 1:06:30Well, and so you could, you could choose to stay in the
- 1:06:34States or you could go to Europe because you could create at
- 1:06:39least a couple weeks in England because they have the Hampton
- 1:06:43Court Concord, which may not be the official name of it, but
- 1:06:48something happens in Hampton Court.
- 1:06:49I believe it's a Concord. And that's the week before the
- 1:06:52Goodwood revival. And I feel like then there's
- 1:06:56something in Paris after that maybe, or there are multiple
- 1:07:00events that you could string together were you so inclined
- 1:07:03and have quite a European vacation.
- 1:07:06Sure, yeah. Yeah, or you could go to
- 1:07:08Colorado and do. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:10But you guys, we talk about this is like a, a, a, you know, a
- 1:07:15fantastical like Grant, you know, a gap year.
- 1:07:18But there is a whole circuit of people who does who, who do.
- 1:07:21There's a whole circuit of people who do every one of these
- 1:07:23events pretty much every year, right?
- 1:07:25That is their life. They bounce around from auction
- 1:07:27to event to race to, you know, to there's a there is a strata
- 1:07:32of people who do just these things and, you know, and hey,
- 1:07:36more power to them. But but the Colorado.
- 1:07:38Grand is. That's that's they have people
- 1:07:42like us that, you know, counterbalance those people,
- 1:07:44right. But but.
- 1:07:46Also, if you look at it right, a lot of us have done a lot of
- 1:07:48things on this list already. So we, we're still, we're doing
- 1:07:51pretty good I think. I would say.
- 1:07:54For me, the Colorado Grand is is a highlight that is tops them
- 1:07:57all. That is just It's become a very
- 1:07:59special event for me. I made so many dear friends.
- 1:08:02It's just something I will do until the day I die.
- 1:08:05It is if they'll if they'll let me, right?
- 1:08:07It's. And they're, you know, could you
- 1:08:09have a better endorsement of an event?
- 1:08:13I think not. I think not talk about bucket
- 1:08:18list. Right.
- 1:08:19Yeah, literally, Yeah, No, I and yeah, it's, I know I have really
- 1:08:26enjoyed hearing you talk about the event and it's clearly very
- 1:08:30special and the group of people that do it.
- 1:08:32And I love that the event gives back to the communities that you
- 1:08:36visit. So it's not just, you know, just
- 1:08:40a car event. I think it really makes a
- 1:08:42meaningful difference for a lot of the little towns in Colorado
- 1:08:45and around. And it just, you know, and we've
- 1:08:48gotten to know Tom, who runs it at Car Week, and he's just such
- 1:08:53a nice guy. And yeah, like I would love to
- 1:08:56participate in some way in the near future.
- 1:08:59That will be, yes. I think that's what we need to
- 1:09:01make happen. We'll add it to the list of
- 1:09:04goals that's. Right.
- 1:09:06Nice. No slowing down in October.
- 1:09:10Nope. Go to Atlanta and go to Petit
- 1:09:13Lamont. Have either of you done this
- 1:09:16event? Not yet, not.
- 1:09:19No, it's, it's kind of like another endurance race, isn't
- 1:09:21it? But Rd.
- 1:09:24Atlanta is supposed to be an amazing track.
- 1:09:27It's supposed to be a great place for, you know, for
- 1:09:29watching. So I think it's on the bucket
- 1:09:33list for sure. And then we go to November,
- 1:09:38there's there's a Grand Prix in Vegas.
- 1:09:41And if anyone knows how to put a Grand Prix on and make it a
- 1:09:43show, it's Vegas. It'll obviously be in its fourth
- 1:09:46year next year and you know, the first year it had a few
- 1:09:52challenges. First year I had a few
- 1:09:55challenges which will be a a Patreon show at some point in
- 1:09:59the future when I can talk about me being the reason that there
- 1:10:03is a cement line on the start finish straight in the very
- 1:10:05first race of I think I can talk about.
- 1:10:09It. I think it could do.
- 1:10:13This was a cement spike and it was exactly proportioned to the
- 1:10:17vehicle I was driving. But we will talk about that in a
- 1:10:20future show And but it's a great event, it's a great show.
- 1:10:26It's always a great weekend. They are learning as they're
- 1:10:29putting it on. So the first year it was on
- 1:10:32very, very late. I think they were trying to get
- 1:10:34European audiences, but now they've kind of dulled that
- 1:10:36back. It's a Saturday night race.
- 1:10:39Any interest? I know that the Deistys went
- 1:10:41this year and had a great time. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:43Yeah. Oh, that's awesome.
- 1:10:44I would love to go. I'm not a.
- 1:10:45Vegas guy, but I'd love to go, yeah.
- 1:10:48Yeah, I hate Vegas with a passion.
- 1:10:50Like I just like, it's just just everything that I don't like in
- 1:10:56one. Yeah.
- 1:10:57Yeah, I've come with you. Dan Yeah.
- 1:10:59And I can bear it for 48 hours. But I, you know, I went out at
- 1:11:04that point. But to go go for the Grand Prix,
- 1:11:09the top tip here is go hang out at the win because that's where
- 1:11:13all the team principals and all the all the drivers stay.
- 1:11:18So go do some people watching in the win.
- 1:11:20If you guys get the chance, shout out to Larry Chen.
- 1:11:23Larry got involved with a Mercedes video this year and
- 1:11:27it's a Mercedes video featuring George Russell as a valet.
- 1:11:33And who's that good looking Formula One film guy, Brad Pitt.
- 1:11:40So Larry did the photography for this video.
- 1:11:43He didn't do the videography, but he did do the the
- 1:11:45photography. And he said it was very similar
- 1:11:48to the old days of hooligan where you would shoot from 7:00
- 1:11:51at night till 7:00 in the morning.
- 1:11:54But he's just posted a YouTube video on this and it looks
- 1:11:57really good. It looks, you know, kudos to
- 1:11:59him. He's got some great pictures of
- 1:12:01both George Russell, a car being and this is a prototype car
- 1:12:05being drifted, and of course, Mr. Pitts, which I would imagine
- 1:12:08that's the easiest part of his job because it's probably very
- 1:12:10difficult to get a bad picture of Brad Pitt.
- 1:12:13I would guess it's a bit like trying to shoot rhyme.
- 1:12:16It's very difficult to get it wrong.
- 1:12:20You hardly have to take any pictures.
- 1:12:23Oh, what's that? A PayPal $100 is just coming in
- 1:12:26from Brian now. Hey, you know I'm a Venmo guy.
- 1:12:33That's that's the makers Grand Prix.
- 1:12:34Maybe we should do that this year, this coming year, yeah.
- 1:12:37That would be amazing. That or the Volkswagen show
- 1:12:40that. Actually, I was going to, I know
- 1:12:41I was going to say, I realized there's one more event in
- 1:12:44October and it's a mass, what has become a massive Volkswagen
- 1:12:48show called 1 Crazy Weekend. And what reminded me was when we
- 1:12:52were there at the beginning of October, they were already
- 1:12:54starting to set up for the Grand Prix, even though it was several
- 1:12:58weeks out at that point. Because it is a massive
- 1:13:00undertaking. So go for one crazy weekend stay
- 1:13:03for the Grand Prix. But that's probably way too much
- 1:13:06Vegas for a lot of people. Definitely.
- 1:13:09But then what I want to do? In go on.
- 1:13:12I was going to say, I hear there's one place that you can
- 1:13:15watch the race unencumbered and for free, and that's by taking
- 1:13:19that escalator up and down and up and down and up.
- 1:13:21Have you seen this? So there's one place.
- 1:13:25Yeah, there's usually a fence around there, like moving you
- 1:13:28along. We're in public.
- 1:13:29I don't know. Yeah.
- 1:13:30It's just I like it. Got a disability I don't.
- 1:13:34Know yeah, I nominate Ryan to attend their strategy and report
- 1:13:38back. Right, right.
- 1:13:41Anyway, there is also. I need to give a call out to the
- 1:13:45win concourse. So this is for four or five
- 1:13:49years old, but mark my words, that is becoming one of the
- 1:13:52biggest events of the year. So just just bear that in mind.
- 1:13:57Our friend of the show, Justin Bell, is the the MC for the
- 1:14:00event. And it's becoming bigger than
- 1:14:04anyone I think realizes so well, I mean, this year they yeah,
- 1:14:08it's they did a lot of good stuff, unveiled new cars.
- 1:14:12So yeah, watch this space. Yeah, it's an elegant event.
- 1:14:16And I know, I think it's a, it's a sleeper.
- 1:14:19It's like a if you know, you know, and it's a lovely event if
- 1:14:23you've been. But yeah, I think it's
- 1:14:24definitely growing and I hope to make it there sooner rather than
- 1:14:28later. Yeah, and in January, if you
- 1:14:31couldn't get to Paris, Retro Mobile will be coming to New
- 1:14:35York in November. So it's the first time they're
- 1:14:38doing the event in New York. It could be a great, a great
- 1:14:42experience. You know, that sort of holiday
- 1:14:43vibe. Plus some.
- 1:14:45Beautiful cars. Yeah, that'll be the first retro
- 1:14:49mobile in the States. So, and they, when I was there
- 1:14:53in Paris in February, I got to talk to Jacques and Ramon and
- 1:14:59they shared a lot about how they chose New York.
- 1:15:03And they really looked at a lot of different locations.
- 1:15:06But they wanted to make it accessible, as accessible as
- 1:15:09possible for people from the West Coast and also Europe to,
- 1:15:13you know, encourage as many people as possible to attend.
- 1:15:17And they're really excited about it.
- 1:15:18And hopefully they will join us and tell us more about it.
- 1:15:22Yeah, look forward to that. And for December, I just put go
- 1:15:27for a drive. Yeah, I think it's a growing way
- 1:15:30to end your gap here, isn't it? Just be compressed, get in the
- 1:15:33car and go for a drive. Yeah.
- 1:15:35And so are we, are you going to create like take a trip to go
- 1:15:40drive somewhere or are we thinking at that point we are
- 1:15:43tired, we want to be home, so we're taking drives from where
- 1:15:46we live. Yeah, I think it's used your
- 1:15:49home as your base. Yeah.
- 1:15:51And just going for a drive. Yeah, ordinarily December would
- 1:15:56not be a good driving month here in Denver, but this month it
- 1:15:58actually was freakishly warm and snowless, so wow.
- 1:16:03I'm so glad we were, I guess. Yeah.
- 1:16:05Yeah. If you guys could pick one event
- 1:16:09from the list next year, which one would it be?
- 1:16:13I think Ryan, we know your answer already.
- 1:16:15So you're not allowed that one. Yeah.
- 1:16:18Yeah, that that would be mine if I had to pick another one.
- 1:16:20I, you know, I, I really would like to go.
- 1:16:24That's got to be one of the Goodwood events.
- 1:16:25It's got to be right. I think maybe the revival.
- 1:16:30Well, and I think we could make the question even more difficult
- 1:16:33by saying it has to be something that you haven't attended
- 1:16:35already because so many of these things are so incredible that,
- 1:16:41you know, it's, I mean, it's an impossible question really.
- 1:16:45Yeah, yeah. I would have to say.
- 1:16:47Juan Lindsay. I know, what if I pick one and a
- 1:16:51bonus? So the fat ice race because I
- 1:16:54really do want to experience that and that's not something
- 1:16:56I've done before. Oh I need 2 bonuses.
- 1:17:00Cow Melee and retro mobile New York.
- 1:17:04There we go. It's a three-way tie.
- 1:17:07It's nice, kind of amazing the three events, right?
- 1:17:10Yeah, no, it's kind of amazing. Between the three of us, we've
- 1:17:13done almost all of them. But what about you, Dan?
- 1:17:14Yeah. I really have a hankering for
- 1:17:17the North Case 500. I really have a hankering for
- 1:17:20going to get and hire a car and just drive around Scotland.
- 1:17:24That'd be great, yeah. I think that would be amazing.
- 1:17:28Oh also villa dust. There's just too many good
- 1:17:30events. I know, I know, I know.
- 1:17:33Which is an amazing problem to have right?
- 1:17:36Yeah, yeah, but a good. San Bernardino it is.
- 1:17:40San Bernardino show and shine. Meet you guys coming?
- 1:17:47Yeah, we have probably missed lots of great, amazing events.
- 1:17:52So an ask for our audience, give us a shout out.
- 1:17:55Let us know. Put it in the comments for the
- 1:17:56show, put it on the Instagram. I'm sure we've missed stuff that
- 1:18:00is really cool, potentially stuff that's underground that
- 1:18:03people don't know about yet. But let us know what we should
