- 0:36Speaker 1: coming into town and it's always so nice to see
- 0:39Speaker 1: my sister and my niece and my brother in law
- 0:41Speaker 1: and just hang out with them, and so we're going

- 1:16Speaker 1: go ahead and read Second Chronicles nine one through twelve today.
- 1:20Speaker 1: As always, I will be reading from the web version,
- 1:23Speaker 1: but feel free to grab the version of the Bible
- 1:24Speaker 1: you prefer this morning. And also your cup of coffee
- 1:27Speaker 1: or your cup of tea for you crazy tea drinkers,
- 1:29Speaker 1: let's go ahead and share a hot beverage together as
- 1:31Speaker 1: we enjoy reading God's word. When the Queen of Sheba
- 1:36Speaker 1: heard of the famous Solomon, she came to test Solomon
- 1:38Speaker 1: with hard questions at Jerusalem with a very great caravan,
- 1:42Speaker 1: including camels that bore spices, golden abundance, and precious stones.
- 1:47Speaker 1: When she had come to Solomon, she talked with him
- 1:49Speaker 1: about all that was in her heart. Solomon answered all
- 1:52Speaker 1: her questions. There wasn't anything hidden from Solomon which he
- 1:55Speaker 1: didn't tell her. When the Queen of Sheba had seen
- 1:58Speaker 1: the wisdom of Solomon, the house that he had built,
- 2:01Speaker 1: the food of his table, the seating of his servants,
- 2:04Speaker 1: the attendants of his ministers, their clothing, his cupbearers and
- 2:07Speaker 1: their clothing, and his ascent by which he went up
- 2:10Speaker 1: to Yawai's house. There was no more spirit in her.
- 2:13Speaker 1: She said to the king, it was a true report
- 2:16Speaker 1: that I heard in my own land of your acts
- 2:17Speaker 1: and of your wisdom. However, I didn't believe their words
- 2:20Speaker 1: until I came and my eyes had seen it. And behold,
- 2:23Speaker 1: half the greatness of your wisdom. Wasn't told me. You
- 2:26Speaker 1: exceed the fame that I heard. Happy are your men? Happy?
- 2:29Speaker 1: Are these your servants who stand continually before you and
- 2:32Speaker 1: hear your wisdom? Blessed be Yahweh, or God who delighted
- 2:36Speaker 1: in you and set you on his throne to be
- 2:38Speaker 1: king for Yahweh your God. Because God loved Israel to
- 2:41Speaker 1: establish them forever. Therefore he made you king over them
- 2:45Speaker 1: to do justice and righteousness. She gave the king one
- 2:49Speaker 1: hundred and twenty talents of gold, spices in great abundance,
- 2:52Speaker 1: and precious stones. There was never before such spice as
- 2:56Speaker 1: the Queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon. Servants of
- 3:00Speaker 1: Hiram and the servants of Solomon, who brought gold from
- 3:03Speaker 1: ofir also brought algam trees and precious stones. The king
- 3:07Speaker 1: used the algam tree wood to make terraces for yaway's
- 3:09Speaker 1: house and for the king's house, and harps and stringed
- 3:12Speaker 1: instruments for the singers. There were none like these scene
- 3:15Speaker 1: before in the Land of Judah. King Solomon gave to
- 3:18Speaker 1: the Queen of Sheba all her desire, whatever she asked,
- 3:22Speaker 1: more than that which she had brought to the king.
- 3:24Speaker 1: So she turned and went into her own land. She
- 3:26Speaker 1: and her servants. In the previous chapter we talked about
- 3:31Speaker 1: the great wisdom of Solomon and also how he was
- 3:34Speaker 1: a really good king for the prosperity of Israel. And
- 3:37Speaker 1: now his fame is spreading all over the world because
- 3:39Speaker 1: the Queen of Sheba ends up hearing about him. So
- 3:43Speaker 1: this would have been a queen in the Land of Sheba.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Sheba was probably in modern day Yemen or modern day Ethiopia,
- 3:51Speaker 1: though it's not one hundred percent sure where the Land
- 3:53Speaker 1: of Sheba is located. The reason people guess that it
- 3:57Speaker 1: was either Ethiopia or Yemen is because those two regions
- 4:02Speaker 1: in Solomon's day were known for having queens as their
- 4:06Speaker 1: primary leaders, not just kings, and not to mention, Jesus
- 4:11Speaker 1: called the Queen of Sheba the Queen of the South.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Both Yemen and Ethiopia are south of Israel. So actually,
- 4:19Speaker 1: if we turn to Matthew twelve, let's read what Jesus
- 4:23Speaker 1: says about the Queen of Sheba. He mentions her very
- 4:25Speaker 1: briefly in verse forty two as an example of what
- 4:30Speaker 1: to do. He says, the Queen of the South, or
- 4:34Speaker 1: the Queen of Sheba, will rise up in the judgment
- 4:37Speaker 1: with this generation and will condemn it. For she came
- 4:40Speaker 1: from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom
- 4:42Speaker 1: of Solomon. And behold, someone greater than Solomon is here.
- 4:47Speaker 1: So Jesus actually commends the Queen of Sheba for going
- 4:50Speaker 1: and visiting Solomon, because she traveled a great distance to
- 4:57Speaker 1: go see him. She heard of his wisdom, and that
- 5:00Speaker 1: prompted her to make a fourteen hundred mile journey just
- 5:05Speaker 1: to see him. This would have taken months and months
- 5:07Speaker 1: and months. And I mean, when you think of queens,
- 5:10Speaker 1: you think of somebody that enjoys their luxuries and their
- 5:14Speaker 1: comforts and probably doesn't want to make a dusty, terrible
- 5:18Speaker 1: trip through the desert for several months just to meet
- 5:23Speaker 1: a man. And yet the Queen of Sheba was willing
- 5:26Speaker 1: to do that because she heard of Solomon's great wisdom,
- 5:29Speaker 1: and that's why Jesus commends her. He's like, you guys
- 5:32Speaker 1: should be more like the Queen of Sheba, who actually
- 5:35Speaker 1: pursued wisdom. Instead, you guys refuse to listen to anything
- 5:41Speaker 1: that I say, even though I am greater than Solomon
- 5:44Speaker 1: in my wisdom, because of course, Jesus is the son
- 5:48Speaker 1: of God and has all wisdom available to him. So
- 5:51Speaker 1: that's why Jesus is like, you won't even travel a
- 5:54Speaker 1: mile to come see the Son of God. Yet the
- 5:57Speaker 1: Queen of Sheba traverses the entire desert to go meet
- 6:02Speaker 1: King Solomon. But let's get into this story a little
- 6:05Speaker 1: bit more so, going back to Second Chronicles nine one
- 6:08Speaker 1: through four, here's what it says. When the Queen of
- 6:10Speaker 1: Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to
- 6:14Speaker 1: test Solomon with hard questions at Jerusalem with a very
- 6:17Speaker 1: great caravan, including camels that bore spices, gold in abundance,
- 6:22Speaker 1: and precious stones. So it's very likely that this queen
- 6:26Speaker 1: was very powerful in her own right. If she were
- 6:29Speaker 1: from the land of Yemen, that would have been an
- 6:31Speaker 1: area of trade at this time, so she would have
- 6:34Speaker 1: been a queen very knowledgeable in trade, and so it
- 6:37Speaker 1: could be that the reason she heard of Solomon was
- 6:40Speaker 1: because Solomon in his own right was now beginning trading
- 6:44Speaker 1: in different countries. You know, we talked in the last
- 6:46Speaker 1: chapter about how Solomon was making the Israelites seafarers, and
- 6:52Speaker 1: they were going as far as oh Fear, which some
- 6:55Speaker 1: people actually think is India to get all sorts of
- 6:58Speaker 1: goods and beautiful things from Ofear and bring them back
- 7:02Speaker 1: to Israel. So if the Queen of Sheba was also
- 7:05Speaker 1: in the trading business, it's very likely that she would
- 7:08Speaker 1: have heard about Solomon beginning all of these trade deals
- 7:12Speaker 1: in the land of o Fear, which caused her to
- 7:16Speaker 1: become very interested in who he was. You know, a
- 7:18Speaker 1: powerful king is now entering the picture, and his fame
- 7:23Speaker 1: is like legendary. So she hears all of these rumors
- 7:27Speaker 1: and she decides, I'm gonna go visit this Solomon guy
- 7:30Speaker 1: and really see who this man is, because I don't
- 7:33Speaker 1: believe these reports about him. So I'm going to bring
- 7:35Speaker 1: him riddles and really hard questions to ask him and
- 7:40Speaker 1: see if he can actually answer them. So she came
- 7:43Speaker 1: to actually test Solomon and to gain wisdom from him.
- 7:47Speaker 1: As well if he was the real deal. So she
- 7:50Speaker 1: comes with a great caravan, because you know, when kings
- 7:54Speaker 1: and queens visited each other, they came with gifts. You know.
- 7:57Speaker 1: I guess it would be pretty rude for the Queen
- 7:59Speaker 1: of Sheba to just go and pick Solomon's brain without
- 8:03Speaker 1: anything in return. So she comes with a huge caravan,
- 8:07Speaker 1: including camels that bore spices, golden abundance, and precious stones.
- 8:13Speaker 1: So it was a big parade. You know. When she
- 8:15Speaker 1: entered the city of Jerusalem. I'm sure people were like, oh,
- 8:18Speaker 1: my goodness, who is here in this city? Like coming
- 8:21Speaker 1: to visit King Solomon. This was probably a really exciting thing,
- 8:24Speaker 1: you know, for everybody in Jerusalem. So it says that
- 8:26Speaker 1: she came to Solomon and she asked him questions about
- 8:30Speaker 1: all that was in her heart. She asked him about
- 8:33Speaker 1: all the riddles that she prepared for him, not to mention,
- 8:35Speaker 1: probably political questions and hard cultural questions. She just wanted
- 8:40Speaker 1: to see who Solomon was and how he was going
- 8:43Speaker 1: to answer these things. She was testing his wisdom, and
- 8:46Speaker 1: it says Solomon passed the test. In verse two. He
- 8:49Speaker 1: answered all her questions. There wasn't anything hidden from Solomon,
- 8:53Speaker 1: which he didn't tell her every single hard question that
- 8:56Speaker 1: she had. Solomon had an excellent anthem her, for he
- 9:01Speaker 1: answered all her questions perfectly because he was a wise man.
- 9:04Speaker 1: God actually told Solomon he was going to be the
- 9:06Speaker 1: wisest man on the planet. So Solomon used that wisdom
- 9:10Speaker 1: to answer all of the queen's questions. And so it
- 9:14Speaker 1: says in verse three, when the Queen of Sheba had
- 9:16Speaker 1: seen the wisdom of Solomon, the house that he had built,
- 9:19Speaker 1: the food of his table, the seating of his servants,
- 9:22Speaker 1: the attendants of his ministers, their clothing, his cupbears and
- 9:26Speaker 1: their clothing, and his ascent by which he went up
- 9:29Speaker 1: to Yawi's house, there was no more spirit in her.
- 9:33Speaker 1: So essentially she gave up. She was like, Okay, I
- 9:36Speaker 1: give up. This man is fantastic, his kingdom is fantastic.
- 9:42Speaker 1: I truly believe the reports that I heard. Now. But
- 9:45Speaker 1: notice here that it says after she had seen all
- 9:48Speaker 1: these things, that was when she finally believed the reports
- 9:52Speaker 1: that she heard, which means that she definitely came as
- 9:55Speaker 1: a skeptic of Solomon. And that's another thing, you know,
- 10:00Speaker 1: don't forget. Jesus actually commended the Queen of Sheba. He
- 10:06Speaker 1: commended her for getting answers to these questions. So you know,
- 10:10Speaker 1: God does not get upset with us when we have
- 10:13Speaker 1: questions for him. It actually says that we should take
- 10:16Speaker 1: these questions to God and that He will not be
- 10:20Speaker 1: angry with us for asking for wisdom for these questions
- 10:25Speaker 1: that we have. You know, I can't tell you how
- 10:26Speaker 1: many times that's happened to me where I'm reading something
- 10:30Speaker 1: to talk to you guys about it, and you know,
- 10:31Speaker 1: I'm doubting something, or I'm going through some kind of
- 10:34Speaker 1: heart problem, or I'm just unsure of what the scripture
- 10:39Speaker 1: is actually saying, and I'm like, how am I going
- 10:41Speaker 1: to present this and talk about this to all the
- 10:43Speaker 1: faithful listeners when I don't have a good answer myself,
- 10:47Speaker 1: when I'm doubting or you know, being a skeptic about
- 10:51Speaker 1: something I'm reading. I can't tell you how many times
- 10:54Speaker 1: I've gone to God with these questions and He just
- 10:58Speaker 1: like reveals something to me. God God answers questions. And
- 11:02Speaker 1: if Jesus was commending the Queen of Sheba, who was
- 11:05Speaker 1: a skeptic going and seeking for those answers, God commends
- 11:11Speaker 1: us for doing the same thing, not just being like, oh,
- 11:15Speaker 1: I don't believe this Bible. You know, it seems corrupted
- 11:18Speaker 1: or it seems too old. I'm just not gonna believe it.
- 11:21Speaker 1: God doesn't commend that, but he does commend you when
- 11:25Speaker 1: you have questions about the Bible where you might not
- 11:28Speaker 1: believe something it says, but you take those questions to
- 11:31Speaker 1: God and you actually try to find answers to them.
- 11:36Speaker 1: You are seeking after God, you are seeking after the truth.
- 11:41Speaker 1: And Jesus commends that. So, yeah, if you have questions,
- 11:44Speaker 1: take them to God. He is not going to get
- 11:45Speaker 1: angry at you for your questions. So the Queen of
- 11:49Speaker 1: Sheba gets the answers to her questions, and she was
- 11:53Speaker 1: so impressed that there is no more spirit in her.
- 11:56Speaker 1: So she was like dead inside saw all of these things,
- 12:01Speaker 1: and she's like, yeah, this is way beyond me, way
- 12:04Speaker 1: beyond my kingdom. I give up. So she says to
- 12:07Speaker 1: the king in verse five, it was a true report
- 12:10Speaker 1: that I heard in my own land of your acts
- 12:12Speaker 1: and of your wisdom. However, I didn't believe their words
- 12:15Speaker 1: until I came and my eyes had seen it, and
- 12:18Speaker 1: behold half of the greatness of your wisdom. Wasn't even
- 12:21Speaker 1: told to me. You exceed the fame that I heard.
- 12:24Speaker 1: So she's like, you know, when I first heard the
- 12:27Speaker 1: reports of how wise you were in my own kingdom,
- 12:31Speaker 1: I didn't believe them at all. And She's like, and
- 12:35Speaker 1: yet they were true, and they weren't even the full truth,
- 12:39Speaker 1: because now I'm actually looking and seeing how impressive you
- 12:44Speaker 1: actually are, how wise you truly are, and how great
- 12:48Speaker 1: Israel has become. She says in verse seven, happy are
- 12:52Speaker 1: your men, Happy are your servants who stand continually before
- 12:56Speaker 1: you and hear your wisdom. Now this does not mean that, uh,
- 13:00Speaker 1: Solomon's servants were like singing and dancing with joy as
- 13:03Speaker 1: they were serving Solomon, but rather they should be happy
- 13:07Speaker 1: being in Solomon's presence every single day, being able to
- 13:12Speaker 1: hear first hand his wisdom. So she says, blessed be Yahweh,
- 13:17Speaker 1: your God, who delighted in you and set you on
- 13:20Speaker 1: his throne to be king for Yahweh, your God, because
- 13:24Speaker 1: your God loved Israel to establish them forever. So I
- 13:28Speaker 1: don't know if the Queen of Sheba was a Yahweh
- 13:31Speaker 1: follower before coming and visiting Solomon, but it kind of
- 13:35Speaker 1: sounds like she's a Yahweh follower. Now, because don't forget,
- 13:39Speaker 1: you know, Solomon wasn't just answering her questions. It actually
- 13:43Speaker 1: says in verse four that he showed her Yahweh's house
- 13:49Speaker 1: and also he ascended to Yahweh's house, meaning he probably
- 13:53Speaker 1: did worship right in front of her. He worshiped Yahweh
- 13:58Speaker 1: in front of the Queen of Sheba. We do know
- 14:00Speaker 1: that Solomon was actually quite religious with his worship of Yahweh.
- 14:05Speaker 1: You know, even though Solomon unfortunately kind of went off
- 14:07Speaker 1: the deep end after a while, at the beginning, he
- 14:10Speaker 1: did the daily sacrifices, he participated in the Sabbath Day sacrifices,
- 14:15Speaker 1: in the New Moon celebrations, and all of the Jewish holidays. Like,
- 14:19Speaker 1: he was quite religious in his own right. And so probably,
- 14:23Speaker 1: you know, the Queen of Sheba is having an extended
- 14:26Speaker 1: stay with Solomon, and she probably asked how worship was
- 14:32Speaker 1: done in Israel. That might have been some of the
- 14:34Speaker 1: hard questions that she had, maybe they were religious questions.
- 14:37Speaker 1: So she goes and sees Solomon worshiping Yahweh. And now
- 14:42Speaker 1: if she didn't know who Yahweh was before, she certainly
- 14:44Speaker 1: does at this point. And She may have even became
- 14:47Speaker 1: a Yahweh follower just based upon her speech right here.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Blessed be Yahweh, your God, who delighted in you and
- 14:54Speaker 1: set you on his throne to be king for Yahweh,
- 14:58Speaker 1: your God, because your God loved Israel to establish them forever.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Therefore he made you king over them to do justice
- 15:06Speaker 1: and righteousness. Sounds to me like she has a genuine
- 15:09Speaker 1: faith now. Don't know if she did before, but after
- 15:12Speaker 1: this visit to Solomon's Kingdom, she certainly does now. And
- 15:16Speaker 1: you know, that's what Israel was supposed to be. Israel
- 15:20Speaker 1: was supposed to be a light to all the other nations.
- 15:23Speaker 1: God actually said, if you follow me, I am going
- 15:27Speaker 1: to give you so many blessings. Your crops are gonna produce,
- 15:32Speaker 1: You're gonna have so many children, You're gonna have wealth,
- 15:35Speaker 1: You're gonna have this and that. I'm gonna just bless
- 15:38Speaker 1: you so so much, and you're gonna be a light
- 15:40Speaker 1: to all these other nations. And when the other nations
- 15:42Speaker 1: see Israel being like blessed immensely with all of these things,
- 15:47Speaker 1: they're gonna be like, what God are they worshiping? How
- 15:51Speaker 1: come our gods aren't doing this for us, you know,
- 15:54Speaker 1: and so the other nations would be interested in learning
- 15:58Speaker 1: about Yahweh, and Solomon kind of did that, especially here
- 16:02Speaker 1: in the case of the Queen of Sheba. She realized
- 16:05Speaker 1: that God was true, that God loved Israel because of
- 16:10Speaker 1: the amount of blessings that Israel received. She gave the
- 16:16Speaker 1: king one hundred and twenty talents of gold, spices in
- 16:19Speaker 1: great abundance, and precious stones. There was never before such
- 16:22Speaker 1: spice as the Queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.
- 16:26Speaker 1: So the Queen of Sheba gave him one hundred and
- 16:29Speaker 1: twenty talents of gold, so that would be about three
- 16:32Speaker 1: and a half metric tons of gold. Also spices in
- 16:36Speaker 1: great abundance, and precious stones. So she brought all of
- 16:39Speaker 1: these things on these camels, so don't forget, you know,
- 16:42Speaker 1: this caravan that she brought with her was huge in
- 16:46Speaker 1: order to carry that amount of gold and spices and
- 16:51Speaker 1: precious stones. Now, of course, it could possibly be that
- 16:56Speaker 1: instead of the queen bringing all of these things on
- 16:59Speaker 1: this carevan to Solomon, she brought some of these things
- 17:03Speaker 1: and promised Solomon the rest later, like she entered a
- 17:06Speaker 1: trade deal with him or some kind of business deal
- 17:09Speaker 1: with him, and over time the gold, spices, and precious
- 17:13Speaker 1: stones ended up coming Solomon's way. But my personal opinion
- 17:17Speaker 1: is that she likely brought these things with her, you know,
- 17:21Speaker 1: especially if it says that she came with a very
- 17:25Speaker 1: great caravan. So that's my guess is that she actually
- 17:29Speaker 1: did hand these things to Solomon personally. Then in verse ten,
- 17:33Speaker 1: it kind of switches tunes a little bit, which is
- 17:35Speaker 1: sort of interesting. The servants of Hrom and the servants
- 17:39Speaker 1: of Solomon, who brought gold from oh Fear, also brought
- 17:43Speaker 1: to algam trees and precious stones. The king used algam
- 17:46Speaker 1: tree wood to make terraces for Yaway's house and for
- 17:49Speaker 1: the King's house, and harps and stringed instruments for the singers.
- 17:53Speaker 1: There was none like these seen before in the land
- 17:55Speaker 1: of Judah. It's kind of an interesting little segue that
- 18:00Speaker 1: scripture does right here, where they go from talking about
- 18:04Speaker 1: the gold and the spices and the precious stones that
- 18:08Speaker 1: the queen brought to all of the successes Israel had
- 18:14Speaker 1: on the sea bringing these things from o Fear, And
- 18:17Speaker 1: it very well could be that since the Queen of
- 18:19Speaker 1: Sheba was likely a smart business woman herself, she was
- 18:25Speaker 1: super impressed with all of the things that Solomon was
- 18:29Speaker 1: getting from o fear, you know, these algam trees and
- 18:32Speaker 1: these precious stones. It actually says the algam trees, there
- 18:35Speaker 1: was none like them ever seen before in the land
- 18:38Speaker 1: of Judah. And all of these things contributed with the
- 18:42Speaker 1: positive impression that the Queen of Sheba got with Solomon
- 18:46Speaker 1: and the land of Israel. So it says in verse
- 18:48Speaker 1: twelve that King Solomon gave to the Queen of Sheba
- 18:51Speaker 1: all her desire, whatever she asked, more than that which
- 18:54Speaker 1: she had brought to the king. So even though the
- 18:57Speaker 1: Queen of Sheba was a very rich woman with tons
- 19:01Speaker 1: and tons of gold that she brought along with her,
- 19:03Speaker 1: King Solomon was even more wealthy than she was and
- 19:07Speaker 1: gave her everything she could want. So she went and
- 19:12Speaker 1: returned to her own land, she and her servants. So,
- 19:16Speaker 1: after staying sometime in the Land of Israel, after receiving
