Speaker 1: Welcome to episode twenty six of A Correctional Compass Podcasting,
• 0:03
Speaker 1: a podcast by Podcast Lab Studios. In this episode, we're
• 0:08
Speaker 1: shining a light on an often overlooked challenge in the
• 0:11
Speaker 1: correctional field. You, yes, you, the correctional officers, prison staff,
• 0:16
Speaker 1: and rehabilitation specialists who dedicate yourselves to supporting others. This
• 0:20
Speaker 1: one's for you. Our topic building pathways, not punishments. But
• 0:26
Speaker 1: this time we're flipping the script. We're not talking about
• 0:28
Speaker 1: rehabilitation for the individuals and your care. We're talking about
• 0:32
Speaker 1: rehabilitation for you as correctional workers. And here's a truth
• 0:36
Speaker 1: that doesn't get discussed nearly enough. You can't pour from
• 0:39
Speaker 1: an empty cup. Your job is demanding, mentally and emotionally
• 0:42
Speaker 1: exhausting and often underappreciated. But here's the thing. Rehabilitation isn't
• 0:49
Speaker 1: just a concept for those you serve. It's something you
• 0:54
Speaker 1: need to embrace for yourself as well. In this episode,
• 0:59
Speaker 1: will EXCP floor how to rebuild your resilience when the
• 1:02
Speaker 1: weight of the job feels overwhelming. We'll talk about the
• 1:05
Speaker 1: signs of burnout and how to recognize when you're reaching
• 1:08
Speaker 1: your limit. Most importantly, we'll share practical tools and strategies
• 1:13
Speaker 1: to help you prioritize your mental, emotional, and physical well
• 1:17
Speaker 1: being in an environment that's often filled with stress and challenges.
• 1:23
Speaker 1: By the end of this discussion, you'll not only gain
• 1:25
Speaker 1: a deeper understanding of why self care and self rehabilitation
• 1:29
Speaker 1: are crucial, but you'll also have actionable steps to create
• 1:32
Speaker 1: balance in your life and maintain the focus and energy
• 1:36
Speaker 1: needed to fulfill your role effectively. This is about more
• 1:39
Speaker 1: than just surviving the job. It's about thriving even in
• 1:42
Speaker 1: the toughest conditions. Let's get started recognizing the weight you carry.
• 1:51
Speaker 1: Correctional work is hard, really hard, day in and day out.
• 1:55
Speaker 1: You're navigating a system that demands strength, steadiness, and determination.
• 2:00
Speaker 1: You're upholding not just the rules, but also the safety
• 2:02
Speaker 1: of others, often while managing the unpredictable and emotionally charged
• 2:06
Speaker 1: situations that arise. But what people don't always see is
• 2:10
Speaker 1: what's happening beneath the surface, the mental and emotional toll.
• 2:13
Speaker 1: It takes the constant vigilance that never seems to shut
• 2:17
Speaker 1: off even when you're off the clock, the middle of
• 2:21
Speaker 1: the night shifts that disrupt your sleep and leave you
• 2:23
Speaker 1: running on fumes, the moments where you feel like you're
• 2:26
Speaker 1: holding everyone else together, but no one's pausing to check
• 2:29
Speaker 1: if you're okay. Burnout doesn't happen overnight. It creeps up
• 2:33
Speaker 1: on you slowly. At first, it's just a little exhaustion,
• 2:37
Speaker 1: but over time it can feel like you're sinking into
• 2:40
Speaker 1: quicksand with no way out. Byicarious trauma adds another layer.
• 2:45
Speaker 1: Those stories or experiences of the people you work with
• 2:48
Speaker 1: start sticking to you, weighing you down emotionally. Then there's PTSD,
• 2:52
Speaker 1: which often lurks in the background, waiting to emerge after
• 2:55
Speaker 1: a particularly intense or traumatic situation. These issues can be silent,
• 3:00
Speaker 1: but their impact is loud. They grow stronger if left unaddressed,
• 3:05
Speaker 1: and before you realize it, they start taking over your life,
• 3:08
Speaker 1: affecting your relationships, your well being, and your sense of self.
• 3:14
Speaker 1: But here's the thing. You're not alone. This isn't just
• 3:17
Speaker 1: your burden to bear, and if you're feeling the weight
• 3:20
Speaker 1: of it all, that's your signal not to ignore it,
• 3:23
Speaker 1: not to push it aside, but to take it seriously,
• 3:26
Speaker 1: to acknowledge what you're carrying because something needs to change.
• 3:31
Speaker 1: Because you matter, your well being, your mental health, and
• 3:35
Speaker 1: your future matter. And it's okay to ask for help.
• 3:39
Speaker 1: It's okay to recognize that you can't do it all
• 3:42
Speaker 1: on your own. Taking care of yourself is in weakness,
• 3:45
Speaker 1: it's strength. You've been there for everyone else, Now it's
• 3:49
Speaker 1: time to be there for you. Self care isn't just
• 3:53
  Speaker 1: a trend, it's a necessity. Here's the good news. There
• 3:58
Speaker 1: are ways to take back your balance, safeguard your well being,
• 4:01
Speaker 1: and rebuild the resilience you've lost along the way. It
• 4:04
Speaker 1: starts with tiny, intentional steps that build over time into
• 4:08
Speaker 1: habits that truly make a difference. Even the smallest changes
• 4:12
Speaker 1: can create a ripple effect in how you approach your
• 4:14
Speaker 1: day to day life. Imagine self care as a toolkit.
• 4:19
Speaker 1: You wouldn't go into a dangerous situation without the right
• 4:22
Speaker 1: tools right. The same applies here. This is about equipping
• 4:26
Speaker 1: yourself to handle life's challenges with strength and clarity. When
• 4:30
Speaker 1: you have the right tools, you're better prepared to overcome obstacles,
• 4:33
Speaker 1: manage stress, and protect your mental and physical health in
• 4:36
Speaker 1: the long run. Here's what should be in your toolkit. Mindfulness. Yes,
• 4:40
Speaker 1: even just five minutes of focus breathing can make a
• 4:43
Speaker 1: big difference in how you feel Mindfulness isn't just about
• 4:47
Speaker 1: sitting still and meditating for hours. It's about grounding yourself
• 4:50
Speaker 1: in the present moment, learning to recognize when your stress
• 4:53
Speaker 1: is peeking, and actively working to lower your heart rate
• 4:57
Speaker 1: when the adrenaline spikes. Think of it as a reset
• 5:00
Speaker 1: button for your mind. Even in the middle of a
• 5:02
Speaker 1: hectic day. Apps, guided exercises, or even just setting aside
• 5:08
Speaker 1: a quiet moment can help you get started exercise. When
• 5:13
Speaker 1: you move your body, you're not just benefiting your physical health,
• 5:16
Speaker 1: you're also moving through stress and releasing it. It doesn't
• 5:19
Speaker 1: have to mean an intense workout at the gym unless
• 5:22
Speaker 1: that's your thing. A quick walk around the block, a
• 5:25
Speaker 1: few stretches at your desk, or even dance into your
• 5:27
Speaker 1: favorite song can boost your mood and energy. Exercise helps
• 5:32
Speaker 1: release endorphins, which are your body's natural stress relievers, and
• 5:35
Speaker 1: it gives you a sense of accomplishment that carries into
• 5:37
Speaker 1: other areas of your life and sleep. I get it.
• 5:40
Speaker 1: Getting enough sleep can feel nearly impossible, especially with a
• 5:44
Speaker 1: busy schedule or irregular shifts, but sleep is essential. It's
• 5:48
Speaker 1: the time when your body and mind recharge, repair and reset.
• 5:52
Speaker 1: Try to treat sleep like a non negotiable meeting with yourself,
• 5:56
Speaker 1: even if it means making small adjustments to your routine.
• 6:00
Speaker 1: Create a calming bedtime ritual, avoid screens before bed or
• 6:03
Speaker 1: sneaking naps when you can. Even small improvements to your
• 6:06
Speaker 1: sleep habits can make a world of difference in your energy, mood,
• 6:10
Speaker 1: and focus. Connecting with others human connection is a lifeline,
• 6:15
Speaker 1: especially in stressful times. Whether it's reaching out to a
• 6:18
Speaker 1: family member, having that heart to heart with a trusted friend,
• 6:22
Speaker 1: or joining a support group or therapy session. Connecting with
• 6:25
Speaker 1: others helps you feel seen, heard, and supported. Isolation feeds stress,
• 6:31
Speaker 1: while community fosters healing and resilience. You don't have to
• 6:35
Speaker 1: go through challenges alone, and leaning on others can be
• 6:38
Speaker 1: one of the most powerful forms of self care. Self
• 6:42
Speaker 1: care isn't selfish. Self care is the foundation for everything
• 6:46
Speaker 1: else you do. When you take the time to care
• 6:48
Speaker 1: for yourself, you're better equipped to care for others, tackle challenges,
• 6:52
Speaker 1: and pursue your goals with a clear mind and a
• 6:55
Speaker 1: stronger heart. It's like sharpening a tool. If you keep
• 6:58
Speaker 1: pounding away without taking the time to sharpen your saw,
• 7:03
Speaker 1: it's not going to work well for very long. Is
• 7:05
Speaker 1: it you are that saw sharpen yourself. Give yourself the care,
• 7:11
Speaker 1: attention and tools you need to thrive, not just survive.
• 7:15
Speaker 1: Life is too short to run on empty. Start small,
• 7:19
Speaker 1: stay consistent, and watch how these small acts of self
• 7:22
Speaker 1: care add up to something transformative. When you need help,
• 7:27
Speaker 1: ask for it. Now. Here's the hard part for any
• 7:32
Speaker 1: of us asking for help. Correctional officers, prison staff, rehab specialists.
• 7:38
Speaker 1: You're wired to solve problems, to be the rock, the
• 7:42
Speaker 1: one who holds it all together for the people around you.
• 7:45
Speaker 1: You're trained to manage crises, maintain order, and support others
• 7:49
Speaker 1: through challenges. Your job demands strength, composure, and unwavering commitment.
• 7:56
Speaker 1: But here's the thing. Being the rock doesn't mean you're invincible.
• 7:59
Speaker 1: Even rocks crack under pressure, and when cracks form, they
• 8:04
Speaker 1: don't heal on their own. Professional support isn't a weakness,
• 8:08
Speaker 1: it's a strength. Seeking help, whether through therapy, counseling, peer
• 8:13
Speaker 1: support groups, are simply having a real conversation with someone
• 8:16
Speaker 1: who truly understands, can be the turning point toward healing
• 8:20
Speaker 1: and resilience. Reaching out is not a sign of failure.
• 8:25
Speaker 1: It's an act of courage and self awareness. That helps
• 8:28
Speaker 1: you regain your energy, focus, and ability to serve others.
• 8:32
Speaker 1: It's a moment where you take control of your well being,
• 8:36
Speaker 1: recognizing that your job isn't just about being there for others,
• 8:39
Speaker 1: but also about taking care of yourself. It's also worth
• 8:43
Speaker 1: saying this your workplace culture matters. A rehabilitation oriented mindset
• 8:49
Speaker 1: doesn't just apply to those you're helping, it extends to
• 8:51
Speaker 1: your own team. One of the keys to fostering this
• 8:55
Speaker 1: mindset is building an environment where communication is open and
• 8:59
Speaker 1: support is prioritized, not overlooked. This means creating an atmosphere
• 9:04
Speaker 1: where coworkers feel safe to express vulnerability, where mental health
• 9:09
Speaker 1: is seen as a shared responsibility, and where leadership leads
• 9:12
Speaker 1: by example in promoting wellness initiatives. Start with small actions
• 9:16
Speaker 1: where you can make an impact in meetings. Advocate for
• 9:19
Speaker 1: wellness programs that address the unique stressors of your work.
• 9:23
Speaker 1: Suggest resources for mental health support like workshops or employee
• 9:27
Speaker 1: assistance programs. Check in on colleagues who seem silently overwhelmed.
• 9:31
Speaker 1: They may just need a moment of encouragement to feel
• 9:34
Speaker 1: seen and valued. Create a space where saying hey, I'm
• 9:38
Speaker 1: struggling today is met with understanding and compassion, not judgment
• 9:43
Speaker 1: or dismissal. Small gestures like words of reassurance or even
• 9:46
Speaker 1: sharing your own experiences can go a long way and
• 9:49
Speaker 1: creating a supportive culture. Remember, the work you do is
• 9:53
Speaker 1: demanding and it matters deeply. You are on the front
• 9:56
Speaker 1: lines of some of the most challenging and impactful work
• 9:59
Speaker 1: there is and to keep making a difference for others,
• 10:02
Speaker 1: you have to make space to care for yourself. Support
• 10:05
Speaker 1: us out there, whether from professionals, friends, colleagues, or family.
• 10:09
Speaker 1: Taking that first step to ask for and can make
• 10:12
Speaker 1: all the difference. You're not alone in this journey, and
• 10:15
Speaker 1: taking care of yourself is the first step towards sustaining
• 10:18
Speaker 1: the essential work you do every day. The takeaway. If
• 10:25
Speaker 1: there's one thing I want you to remember from this podcast,
• 10:28
Speaker 1: it's this. To take care of others well, you must
• 10:31
Speaker 1: take care of yourself first. You can't pour from an
• 10:35
Speaker 1: empty cup. And the more you prioritize your well being,
• 10:37
Speaker 1: the better equipped you'll be to support those around you.
• 10:40
Speaker 1: And when you do, you'll see the ripple effect. You'll
• 10:43
Speaker 1: show up stronger, more grounded, more capable, and it spreads,
• 10:48
Speaker 1: It touches your team, creating an environment of resilience and balance.
• 10:53
Speaker 1: It strengthens your family relationships, allowing you to be fully
• 10:57
Speaker 1: present at home. It even impacts the people under your supervision,
• 11:01
Speaker 1: inspiring them to model the same care and balance in
• 11:04
Speaker 1: their own lives. Burnout and trauma don't have to define
• 11:09
Speaker 1: your story. They're challenging chapters, yes, but not the whole narrative. Instead,
• 11:14
Speaker 1: think of rehabilitation as a bridge, a bridge between where
• 11:19
Speaker 1: you're at now and where you could be. It's not
• 11:23
Speaker 1: about achieving perfection or erasing the struggles, but about making steady,
• 11:27
Speaker 1: meaningful progress, one step at a time, one day at
• 11:31
Speaker 1: a time. You are more than the stress. You are
• 11:34
Speaker 1: more than those hard days that seem insurmountable. You are
• 11:37
Speaker 1: more than the setbacks. You are the sum of your strength, determination,
• 11:41
Speaker 1: and compassion, And most importantly, you deserve the same care
• 11:46
Speaker 1: and effort you give to the world every single day.
• 11:50
Speaker 1: Thank you for tuning into this episode. I hope today's
• 11:52
Speaker 1: episode gave you practical tools and encouragement to prioritize yourself
• 11:56
Speaker 1: in this demanding and challenging field. Whether it's setting boundaries,
• 12:00
Speaker 1: asking for help, or simply allowing yourself to rest. Every
• 12:03
Speaker 1: small step you take matters. If you found value in
• 12:07
Speaker 1: this episode, please share it with a colleague or friend
• 12:09
Speaker 1: who might need this message today. Together, we can create
• 12:13
Speaker 1: a culture where self care is not seen as a
• 12:15
Speaker 1: luxury or indulgence, but as an essential part of the
• 12:18
Speaker 1: work we do. Stay strong, stay grounded, be kind to
• 12:22
Speaker 1: yourself as you are to others, and until next time,
• 12:25
  Speaker 1: keep breaking barriers.
