Latest / Traveler’s Tales / Bedford Prison and God's Purpose: The Story of John Bunyan
Transcript
- 0:00There are moments in history when heaven quietly steps into ordinary places and changes the
- 0:18world forever.
- 0:19In a small English village in the 1600s, God began writing a story through the life of
- 0:25a simple tinker-turned-preacher, a story that would travel farther than he ever would, reach
- 0:31nations he would never see, and strengthen believers he would never meet.
- 0:37This is the story of John Bunyan, a man who discovered that not even prison walls could
- 0:42stop the purpose of God.
- 0:45Welcome to another edition of Traveler's Tales, produced by Enjoying the Journey.
- 0:49I'm Greg Downey, and I'm grateful to have you traveling with me today.
- 0:54Here we step into moments from history where ordinary people trusted an extraordinary God.
- 1:01These are stories of courage, sacrifice, stories of faith, lives that point their generation
- 1:08toward Christ, and they still challenge ours today.
- 1:13John Bunyan was born in November 1628 in England.
- 1:17His early life was not marked by spiritual greatness, but God began working in his heart
- 1:24through preaching, through the prayers of faithful believers, and through the influence
- 1:29of his young wife, who helped lead him to Christ.
- 1:32One evening, while sitting by the fireside reflecting on Hebrews 2, verses 14 and 15,
- 1:39Bunyan experienced deep spiritual awakening.
- 1:43That moment changed everything.
- 1:46He joined the Baptist Church in Bedford in 1653.
- 1:51By 1655, he was preaching, and soon after, he became pastor.
- 1:58But trouble was coming.
- 2:00England required preachers to have government approval.
- 2:05Bunyan was told he could continue preaching if he joined the state church and obtained
- 2:10a license.
- 2:11He refused, and for that refusal, he was imprisoned for 12 years.
- 2:17Think about that.
- 2:1812 years away from his church, 12 years of no income, 12 years while his wife and family
- 2:24struggled.
- 2:26To many observers, it probably looked like wasted time.
- 2:31But God does not waste surrendered lives.
- 2:35During his imprisonment, Bunyan wrote 9 books, and later, during another 6-month imprisonment,
- 2:41he wrote most of what would become his masterpiece, Pilgrim's Progress, written in 1678.
- 2:49That book would go on to become, after the Bible, the most widely read Christian book
- 2:54in history for over two centuries.
- 2:57It has never gone out of print.
- 2:59It has been translated into over 200 languages and has influenced hundreds of millions of
- 3:05people.
- 3:06After his release, Bunyan pastored for 16 more years.
- 3:10And more persecution came, but his faith never wavered.
- 3:15In 1688, after being caught in a rainstorm while traveling to help a friend reconcile
- 3:21a conflict, Bunyan developed a fever, and he died.
- 3:26His final words were not about regret, not about suffering, but words of hope.
- 3:32He said, Weep not for me, but for yourselves.
- 3:35I go to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 3:40As we step back and look at the life of John Bunyan, it becomes clear that his story is
- 3:45more than just history.
- 3:48It reminds us that God is still shaping lives today the same way he shaped lives then.
- 3:55Bunyan didn't set out to become famous.
- 3:57He set out to be faithful.
- 3:59And when we study his life closely, we begin to see lessons that reached far beyond a 17th
- 4:06century prison cell, lessons that speak directly into our lives today.
- 4:11First, Bunyan teaches us to honor God, even when life is hard.
- 4:18Bunyan lost his freedom, his stability, his family suffered while he was in prison, and
- 4:23yet he chose obedience over comfort.
- 4:28Scripture reminds us in 2 Corinthians 4 that our present suffering is working toward an
- 4:34eternal glory far greater than we conceive right now.
- 4:38And maybe that's a word someone listening today needs to hear.
- 4:43Hard seasons are not proof that God has stepped away.
- 4:47Sometimes they are proof that God is doing deeper work than we can yet understand.
- 4:53Sometimes honoring God costs us something, but it never costs more than God can redeem.
- 5:01Second, Bunyan reminds us to stand firm in biblical conviction, no matter the pressure.
- 5:08He could have walked out of prison at any time.
- 5:11All he had to do was agree to stop preaching without state permission.
- 5:16But Bunyan believed truth was not something you negotiate.
- 5:21And today, we live in a world that constantly pressures believers to soften the truth, to
- 5:26adjust conviction, to blend in.
- 5:30But faith that bends under pressure cannot stand in the storm.
- 5:35Bunyan's life reminds us that standing firm may cost comfort, but compromise costs far more.
- 5:43Also, Bunyan's life reminds us to fill our lives with Scripture.
- 5:48If you read his writings, they are saturated with Bible truth.
- 5:53Why?
- 5:54Because his life was saturated with Bible truth.
- 5:57When pressure came, Scripture came out.
- 6:01And that's how it still works today.
- 6:04We don't rise to the level of our intentions in crisis.
- 6:07No, we fall to the level of what is already rooted in our hearts.
- 6:12The Word of God is not just knowledge, it is strength for the soul.
- 6:17When you look at Bunyan's life, you begin to see a pattern.
- 6:21God uses surrendered people.
- 6:23God redeems and uses suffering.
- 6:27God multiplies faithfulness.
- 6:30A prison became a place of influence.
- 6:33And one man's obedience became a testimony that still strengthens the church today.
- 6:39And maybe, just maybe, the hard place you're walking through right now is not the end of
- 6:45your story.
- 6:46It may be the place where God is writing your greatest chapter.
- 6:51Thank you for taking time to join us today for Traveler's Tales.
