- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, Sean O. If you had to pick Coach
- 0:02Speaker 1: of the Year in the Big Ten Conference after a
- 0:05Speaker 1: couple of conference games, would it be Bob Chesney, Luke Fickle,
- 0:08Speaker 1: or P.J.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Fleck? Well, what about David Braun at Northwestern?
- 0:12Speaker 1: Yeah, yep.
- 0:13Speaker 2: I think he should be in that discussion, too. I
- 0:16Speaker 2: think you've got three or four stories going here, and
- 0:20Speaker 2: then you've got schools spending big dollars in Michigan and
- 0:23Speaker 2: Penn State. who have lost two conference games apiece to
- 0:28Speaker 2: teams with rosters not near as valuable. You think about
- 0:32Speaker 2: the Big Ten right now, the way these starts have gone,
- 0:36Speaker 2: the television ratings and how CBS, NBC, and Fox select
- 0:40Speaker 2: each week is going to get interesting down the stretch
- 0:42Speaker 2: because those networks obviously count on Michigan and Penn State
- 0:46Speaker 2: being good, and this year both those programs have suffered,
- 0:48Speaker 2: and the teams and coaches you've mentioned have. But to
- 0:51Speaker 2: your question, I'd almost lean towards Bob Chesney. I think
- 0:54Speaker 2: with what he's done at UCLA, he is a real up-and-comer.
- 0:59Speaker 2: By the way, Penn State turned him away to hire
- 1:02Speaker 2: Matt Campbell.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Yeah, they wish they had Mulligan on that. UCLA is
- 1:07Speaker 1: playing at Oregon this week. We'll find out more. Wisconsin
- 1:10Speaker 1: has the week off. They play at UCLA on the 17th.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Minnesota is playing at Purdue. So things are looking good
- 1:16Speaker 1: for those guys. Now, to Nebraska and Indiana. 16 penalties. And,
- 1:23Speaker 1: you know, maybe it was an off day by the officials.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Maybe there were some questionable calls. But Nebraska still leads
- 1:28Speaker 1: the Big Ten in penalties. This is not something that
- 1:31Speaker 1: you can ignore. When you have 43 penalties in five games,
- 1:36Speaker 1: Sean O, that's just not winning football.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Yeah, there were a lot of calls. I mean, it
- 1:42Speaker 2: was a school record in the first half for penalties
- 1:45Speaker 2: in the half for Nebraska with 10. We have never
- 1:48Speaker 2: seen 10 penalties in a half in the history of
- 1:51Speaker 2: Nebraska football. So that there got your attention, just going
- 1:55Speaker 2: into the locker room and just the variety of the penalties, too.
- 1:59Speaker 2: It wasn't one thing. It was kind of a lot
- 2:01Speaker 2: of things. But we've seen as many special teams penalties
- 2:06Speaker 2: this year as I can ever remember. Just different things,
- 2:10Speaker 2: being aggressive on special teams, whether it's offside, holding calls.
- 2:18Speaker 2: It's hard to wrap your arms around just why they're getting...
- 2:22Speaker 2: A few procedural ones here, they're going to happen. But yeah,
- 2:26Speaker 2: too many. And it made the flow of that game
- 2:29Speaker 2: just crazy. Maryland had 18 possessions in the game. 18.
- 2:33Speaker 2: A lot of it's because they got... just the way
- 2:37Speaker 2: the penalties and the way the game flowed. But I
- 2:41Speaker 2: have not been around a game like that and doing
- 2:43Speaker 2: this job in a long time, if ever.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Yeah, Maryland is a very poorly coached team. They have athletes.
- 2:49Speaker 1: We saw that on Saturday. To your point last week,
- 2:52Speaker 1: they have people, and their people were not used properly
- 2:56Speaker 1: in that game. That was a real plus for Nebraska.
- 2:58Speaker 1: And Anthony Calandra really came through in the second half
- 3:01Speaker 1: and played well. I'm not sold on Indiana, Shano. You
- 3:04Speaker 1: think about it, their schedule has not exactly been murderer's row.
- 3:08Speaker 1: And the tough game they've had this year was against
- 3:10Speaker 1: Northwestern at home. And you might have seen that one
- 3:13Speaker 1: a week ago last Friday, the 25th of September. They
- 3:16Speaker 1: were giving up big chunks of yards on the ground
- 3:18Speaker 1: in that game at home.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Yeah, and they got pushed pretty hard in that game.
- 3:23Speaker 2: And it should get your attention. I mean, this Indiana
- 3:25Speaker 2: team obviously is still a very good team. But they
- 3:28Speaker 2: lost eight draft picks last year. from last year um
- 3:31Speaker 2: new quarterback uh they had to bring in a new
- 3:34Speaker 2: receiver to go with charlie becker it's nick marsh um
- 3:37Speaker 2: a lot of new offensive linemen of that original james
- 3:40Speaker 2: madison group of players i believe there's like one or
- 3:43Speaker 2: two left um so you know that the core that
- 3:46Speaker 2: signetti built that thing is no longer there um and
- 3:49Speaker 2: and they're they're kind of establishing their identity still obviously
- 3:52Speaker 2: a well-coached team though maybe the best coach in the
- 3:54Speaker 2: country leading the sideline and you know that they've probably
- 3:58Speaker 2: studied all the vulnerabilities of Nebraska. It's going to be
- 4:00Speaker 2: a fun game. I'm looking forward to this Saturday.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll see what the strategy is for Quasi Gilmer.
- 4:07Speaker 1: If Kurt Cignetti believes that Anthony Calandra is going to
- 4:09Speaker 1: lock on Quasi Gilmer, they'll take Quasi Gilmer out of
- 4:12Speaker 1: the game. So then it becomes a coaching issue, and
- 4:14Speaker 1: he gets 17 targets. Gilmer did in that ballgame. between
- 4:19Speaker 1: Nebraska and Maryland. That's too many passes to one guy,
- 4:22Speaker 1: unless that was by design. We'll talk about that throughout
- 4:24Speaker 1: the week. All right, Shano, thank you. And remember, he's
- 4:27Speaker 1: with us for the Husker Buzz Extra every morning during
- 4:29Speaker 1: the week on 1110 KFB and with us 647 and
- 4:33Speaker 1: the Husker online pregame show Friday night at 6.
