- 1:45Hope you're all staying safe and healthy out here and 2022.
- 1:50I hope the first month of the year is not treating you too
- 1:53bad. There's always bumps in the
- 1:56road. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:58There's always little pitfalls. There's always, you know, things
- 2:03that you gotta get, get through. But I hope that It's not too
- 2:07much for you at this early juncture of the year.
- 2:12And so yeah. Here we are today, episode 3,
- 2:19kicking off the rotation things. Let me talk in today.
- 2:23A bit about you will At least our experience for you all my
- 2:28experience for, you'll my tribes experience for you'll that just
- 2:33occurred this past weekend. I've been talking a lot about it
- 2:39on the podcast so figured it would be a good to kind of
- 2:44lychees all know a little bit about kind of the way things
- 2:47went and you know, in an effort right to hopefully inspire And
- 2:57maybe educate a little bit, right?
- 2:59Course the Traditions, the things that we do specifically
- 3:06our are rooted in very, they're very purposeful, you know?
- 3:11It the things that we do may have historical backing or You
- 3:20know, stuff that we read about in the lore and this and that or
- 3:23other historical sources, but the purpose behind what we do is
- 3:27not just to be historical, right?
- 3:29The purpose behind what myself and my tribe all do, when we
- 3:34have these sorts of get-togethers and these, these
- 3:37sorts of celebrations, there there's purpose behind it that
- 3:42goes beyond, just what is it historically?
- 3:45Accurate and I always have, you know, I've said a lot on this
- 3:49channel on Podcast before that, I am not at least what I would
- 3:53consider a 100%, you know, hardcore Recon key that I'm not
- 3:58a Reconstructionist although I do really enjoy the learning and
- 4:06education parts of knowing as much as we can about the the
- 4:11historical side of how Heathen we may have been practiced or
- 4:15what we call Heathen re today, how it may even practice in Old
- 4:19Time. As and pre-christian Scandinavia
- 4:22and Germanic countries, Mainland Germania and and the surrounding
- 4:28you know, Scandinavian countries.
- 4:29I find it all very fascinating and I find myself more and more
- 4:33drawing from those you know, texts those sources to help
- 4:42build the modern tradition for my nearest and dearest.
- 4:46So you know, some of the things that I made talk about may have
- 4:52a lot of, you know, if anybody hears a historian or a
- 4:58historical Heathen, a lot of what I may say, have ring a lot
- 5:03of bells, right? But I guess I'm not what I would
- 5:07consider a Recon. He then for instance, right?
- 5:11Like the, you'll, the historical you'll is.
- 5:16When we celebrate it on the day and on the night that we
- 5:19celebrate it. This year was a couple of nights
- 5:23before, actually at the time of filming this podcast and
- 5:28recording this. And for my YouTube channel
- 5:30members, that by the time they get, this is actually the first
- 5:35night of you'll because the full moon is today on the 17th.
- 5:41So we are, we were a couple of days early, we celebrated are
- 5:46you on the 15th? And that was because again
- 5:50Purpose is to do it together. The purpose is to do it together
- 5:53as a tribe. And the tribe was not going to
- 5:57be able to do a Monday night going into a Tuesday, you know,
- 6:04all-nighter or or have a big celebration like that, our work
- 6:08schedules and our respective lives, just wouldn't work that
- 6:14way. So we made it work and we did it
- 6:16on the the 15th. And our tribe is very small
- 6:22right now and we had guests and friends that are guests of of
- 6:29the tribe, right? So he had his name is Greg.
- 6:34I've had him on the excuse me, had him on the podcast a few
- 6:36times. He's a Chieftain of the Raven,
- 6:39Moon Hearth Kindred up in Nashville and he's been coming
- 6:45to our Yule events for the last several years.
- 6:47So he was always a an honored and Guest and we had some other
- 6:52dear friends of ours attend as well that are not necessarily
- 6:56Heathen by any means, like they don't practice Heathen, react to
- 7:01any descriptive sense of the word, but one of those people
- 7:06is, is Richard McCune. He's also been on this podcast.
- 7:09So him and his wife, attend our Yule every year because we have
- 7:13done ritual together. We have developed a bond of
- 7:17Brotherhood Richard and I have and then he He has, of course,
- 7:21in his time, spent with me and with my other tribe, men's
- 7:24tribesmen have developed at that, you know, Bond of kinship
- 7:30as well to a degree. I feel.
- 7:32So I'm not speaking on behalf of everybody else in the tribe, but
- 7:35for me at least he's a brother to me, right?
- 7:37So he's always welcome him. And his wife are always welcome.
- 7:40But so Saturday, you know, we we had our thing and we do it here
- 7:52at my wife's and my house. So it's a very small closed
- 7:57Circle, sort of sort of deal. We don't have a large like high
- 8:02Feast with everybody and anybody we just first of all, we're not
- 8:07we're not in a rural enough area, to be able to host that
- 8:12many people. Firstly and secondly, I did
- 8:15something like that one time where?
- 8:21Had we had like, I don't know. Fifteen or twenty some odd
- 8:26people here, that we barely knew.
- 8:30And it was, I mean, it was a crazy night.
- 8:35People can say, oh, it's you'll, you know, it's going to get
- 8:37crazy. Yeah.
- 8:38Well, this is like the not-so-good kind of crazy and
- 8:41needless to say that was a lesson learned sort of thing.
- 8:46So, Over the last several years, we've only kept our tribal.
- 8:53You'll celebration to be submit very small and very, very, you
- 8:58know, contained to just the people that we are nearest and
- 9:02dearest to will see where the years down the road.
- 9:05Like, whether it's next year, or some years on down the road
- 9:08where we're all that and where the where the tribe is at how
- 9:11much the tribe has grown. Whether we continue to have
- 9:16these, you'll events Or at our place or whether we look to open
- 9:22it up to a bigger, you know, audience or a larger area, maybe
- 9:28rent to pay space out or whatever.
- 9:30But as it stands right now, we're keeping it here to our
- 9:34closest nearest and dearest and it's worked well for us.
- 9:37So for anyone that's, you know, thinking of you'll and right or
- 9:41whether it's, I know some people have already done their usual
- 9:45thing around the end of end of December.
- 9:48Uber. And then some have either done
- 9:52there. You will around the time that we
- 9:54did ours or they're about to because again of scheduling
- 9:57because of the reasonings of life in general.
- 10:00Right, there may be some that are waiting to the end of this
- 10:02month to get their people together.
- 10:05And I even heard some other people are not going to be able
- 10:09to hold their, you will Feast until like the beginning of
- 10:14February. So, I would like to just say,
- 10:19right? Like it really doesn't matter so
- 10:20much as to win, you decide to do it, like, what is the purpose?
- 10:24Why do you choose to do it around that time?
- 10:26We choose to do it around our time.
- 10:28Because it doesn't conflict with other potential family,
- 10:34get-togethers around the end of December, right?
- 10:37So around like the Christmas time and where everybody else in
- 10:39the families are wanting to have get-togethers and and dinners
- 10:43and whatnot. We've moved.
- 10:46Our Heathen, you'll have our usual celebration to the
- 10:50historical Reckoning time, framers close thereabouts in a
- 10:54way to prevent any conflict, so that could be a good reason.
- 10:57Why? But it's, you know, when you get
- 10:58to do it really doesn't to me, make a whole big, a difference
- 11:03and I think most people would agree that it doesn't really
- 11:05matter when you do it. If it's within a certain
- 11:08proximity of time, you know, that's semantics at this point
- 11:12and so there's Always a feast right involved in the way that
- 11:18the way that my tribe does. You'll every year is, there's
- 11:22always an opening ritual of bloat to the gods.
- 11:27The ritual is usually a combined effort written, something
- 11:30written either between myself and other members of the tribe.
- 11:35So like, for instance, you know, last year, everybody had a piece
- 11:39to say, around the fire this year.
- 11:42It was just myself that wrote the ritual and and and whatnot.
- 11:45So it kind of just Ends each year.
- 11:46How we how we are? Feeling what we want to focus
- 11:49our bloat to the gods and I say bloat in the turn, in the sense
- 11:54that it's a ritual to the gods, nothing that we do around for
- 11:59bloat, has anything to do with like eating or drinking for us.
- 12:04We're giving to the gods and there's There's going to be some
- 12:10that say, well, you can't do bloat without blood.
- 12:13I get it. I understand why?
- 12:14Because that's how it was done in historical times.
- 12:16It was, it was an animal, was sacrificed in the blood was
- 12:19caught in an used in the bloat, but needless to say, in modern
- 12:24times, especially in the area that we are right now, that's
- 12:27just not too convenient and it's not conducive to us in our area.
- 12:34I don't think the neighbors that live within spitting distance of
- 12:37us would appreciate You know, a bowl of blood being carried and
- 12:42sprinkled around. But anyway, we use Dale this
- 12:48time around because our bloat, our ritual was to Thor.
- 12:52So that that that seemed very fitting.
- 12:57There was some ale that I don't drink a lot of beer period.
- 13:02But I had a bottle of beer that my wife had gotten me like a
- 13:06pack of beer and it was one of those Porter's.
- 13:09Nice dark, you know kind of chocolate flavored beers or
- 13:13whatever and I had one left in the fridge that kind of like was
- 13:17just in the back there and I forgot about it and I looked in
- 13:19there the other day and I was like that one's going to Thor
- 13:23that one's going to be for Thor and Patrick and dingo.
- 13:28My tribesmen also had some beer that they don't really drink a
- 13:30whole lot in there like will bring some, you know.
- 13:33So we all had some, some ale that we could pour into the horn
- 13:37and do our ritual with so That's what, what was used for for
- 13:42blow. And it was dedicated to Thor
- 13:44because the name of our tribe is very the folk.
- 13:48Her really is a canning for Thor.
- 13:50The thunderer the the or thundering storm.
- 13:54So thoroughly folk is a people of the Thundering storm or
- 13:57Thor's people, the people of the thunder.
- 13:59So this particular year though, around this time of year, right
- 14:03now in the last several weeks has been very odd weather wise,
- 14:06like, we've seen more Fall this year and it's just January like
- 14:12we've seen like I think it was been three different snow falls
- 14:16at the at least at this point in time which is for this part of
- 14:21Tennessee is a bit rare. You know, sometimes we won't
- 14:24even go a year with seeing snow we might get like an inch or two
- 14:27dusting with mostly ice. But this year, particularly
- 14:30right we had a we had a good I'd say you know, the first snowfall
- 14:36we had we had probably about a good 78 inches on the ground and
- 14:39this go around. We have another 45 very wet,
- 14:42heavy snow, buddy, you know, stormy weathers and then prior
- 14:46to those storm that came in that all that winter weather was
- 14:50preceded by warm weather. I'm talking like unseasonable
- 14:55warm, I even remember hearing Thunders Thunders, thunderstorms
- 15:00Thunder Rolls, I'll get it out. Coming through the area, not all
- 15:04that long ago, right? So, it's been like, very odd
- 15:06weather wise and, you know, most of most of anybody that's lives
- 15:10in Tennessee or has lived in Tennessee for any length of
- 15:12time, at least in the Middle, Tennessee area will tell you,
- 15:16that's just normal. The weather is never, you know,
- 15:21solid from one length of time. There's a, there's a running
- 15:24joke that if you don't like the weather in Tennessee, just wait
- 15:28a day or wait, five minutes and it'll change to something else
- 15:31that you like, and it's true. There's R-Truth to that than
- 15:33there is joking but so we've had some Stormy Weather and so it
- 15:39felt a very appropriate to dedicate the bloat or opening
- 15:44ritual whatever you want to call it ceremony to Thor and it was
- 15:48done in the yard, our yard my wife's and my we haven't just,
- 15:53you know, a small lot that we live on and it's, you know, big
- 15:55enough for us and our pets. So but we had a Sacred Space set
- 16:00up you know outside in our yard. Of out of the main site of
- 16:04everybody, you know, a little bit, little bit of privacy
- 16:08behind the behind the unit here and we did our thing.
- 16:12Nothing big nothing. Elaborate.
- 16:14But just a good solid dedication to Thor before our feast.
- 16:20And then the feast inside was, you know, we generally every
- 16:26year will provide the main course and then ask attendees
- 16:32and guests right to bring something.
- 16:36So this year, we had a ham, I was like to cook a ham for
- 16:43you'll just because of the, the correlations to the Yule ham.
- 16:48And how in think it was in The Saga of Hawking, the good.
- 16:52I think it was where bows were sworn on the boar?
- 16:57You know, so the ham has been a tradition for us.
- 17:03Here and who doesn't love a good, you know, either it's, you
- 17:07know, this year was a what I call it a sweet or sugar ham,
- 17:10you know. So it had that kind of brown
- 17:12sugar glaze thing going on over it.
- 17:15Other years, we've done, I think a smoked ham but either way,
- 17:17it's always ham as as one of the mains and then I had made some
- 17:23meat pies, ground beef, seasoned meat pies, the recipe of which
- 17:30came from jmo. Listen, A wife, the obvious here
- 17:34Workshop, his wife had made us meat pies when we visited them
- 17:39last year November and they were so good.
- 17:42We're like we got to get that recipe.
- 17:44So I took a crack at him for everybody that was here that's
- 17:49watching or listening to this the the pie dough I apologize
- 17:53for that. I know next time to precook the
- 17:55do a bit and I didn't this time so word to the wise.
- 18:01You guys are going to get refreshed.
- 18:02Rated like Pillsbury dough, hi crust, do whatever.
- 18:06And you're gonna get the kind that are just, you know, that
- 18:10you put into a pan, not that might not like the Frozen cut
- 18:13kind or whatever word to the wise, precook it a bit precook
- 18:17it. And, you know, then put your
- 18:22filling and stuff inside. So the feeling was great.
- 18:26Everybody had great things to say about the feeling but you
- 18:28know eating some undercooked or chewy dough.
- 18:32Made it not as enjoyable. So I apologize to everybody for
- 18:36that but made the ham, made some meat pies, and homemade mashed
- 18:41potatoes, not the Frozen kind, you know, I mean I'm talking to
- 18:45you know, got the potatoes, peeled them, fresh cooked them,
- 18:48my wife help with that as well. So thank you to her and then our
- 18:54friend Patrick or my loss speaker the laws speak the
- 18:57tribes law speaker, right? He brought some venison.
- 19:01Some marinated and some just seasoned venison that he grilled
- 19:06and everybody got to enjoy some of that.
- 19:08We had some, you know, Donuts brought as dessert and it was,
- 19:12it was, it was a simple spread, you know, guys.
- 19:14It wasn't anything. Elaborate, the biggest, I guess,
- 19:20the most important thing. Like, the biggest thing that
- 19:22stood out to me about the feast was that.
- 19:26It's simple but it's meaningful, right?
- 19:28Like, okay. So like Just say like the ham
- 19:32was already cooked. I do was just heating it up but
- 19:34like the potatoes and we we peel the potatoes, you cook the
- 19:37potatoes, the meat pies, you know, like you put your hands
- 19:39everything's mixed in together, you put your heart, you put your
- 19:43love into it, it was a lot of things were made by Patrick.
- 19:45He may he grow his meat and that he brought in and it was season
- 19:49and it was marinated in something that he did.
- 19:51And, you know, all these things that had loved and thought put
- 19:55into them. You know, it's quite literally
- 19:58the, the the Judges side of you land and, you know, some of the
- 20:06things that we do at. You'll, you know, tying weird
- 20:09with each other sharing in luck with each other and all these
- 20:13kind of things. Like, that's the there's
- 20:15metaphysical aspects. This is the literal physical
- 20:17aspect of like, you putting all of your love, putting your
- 20:20intent, putting your heart, your soul, your feeling into what
- 20:24you're doing into cooking and it you know, whether it comes out
- 20:29the greatest like for me, you know, even though the Is it in
- 20:31come out 100%? The way, maybe they should have
- 20:34because I, you know, first time doing it, it was, you know,
- 20:38people liked it and we got to enjoy it regardless.
- 20:40It wasn't perfect. Perfect.
- 20:42It wasn't, you know, Gordon Ramsay came and he probably shit
- 20:44the bed, but I don't care about that.
- 20:47I care about what my folk and my people and my loved ones feel,
- 20:52right? So that experience is, what
- 20:54means something? And then again, just hope it
- 20:56goes back to the purpose of why we're doing.
- 20:59What we're doing course, were there, too?
- 21:01Joy. One another's company, eat good.
- 21:02But the, you know you could you could cater you land, it
- 21:06wouldn't feel the same, you know, I mean, you could cater
- 21:09the feast but because nobody made anything that, you know,
- 21:12you didn't have your hands and if you don't have your, you
- 21:14didn't get up early in the morning to prepare and do all
- 21:17this kind of stuff like that means more and having it be
- 21:21something simple yet. Thought-out and meaningful means
- 21:24a whole lot more than just having, you know, the best of
- 21:27everything catered and whatnot. So, That was a, that was our
- 21:32feast. And then following our feast, we
- 21:36always exchange gifts. So I had made a had a handmade
- 21:45gift for everybody. That was a guest there.
- 21:51So everybody got a handmade gift of sorts.
- 21:57And and it was just like a wood wood wood burning projects,
- 22:02right? So I go the, in my law speaker,
- 22:05they each received like a I guess you could call it a wine
- 22:09box but it's a tall wooden box that will fit, you know, a
- 22:13standard 750 ml bottle of anything.
- 22:16But we are whiskeys. We are Whiskey's guys.
- 22:19Whiskey's where whiskey drinkers.
- 22:22Gosh, where whiskey Drinkers and bourbon Junkies.
- 22:29Our bourbon Drinker is, you know, like we love those types
- 22:32of Libations and so I gifted this to them to, for them to
- 22:38keep, you know, maybe their favorite bottle of something or
- 22:41switch it out, or you or keep something meaningful in their to
- 22:44them for for whatever that they are where whiskey bottle
- 22:47holders, their Whiskey Bottle boxes, right?
- 22:50But they're they're burned. They were burned in such a way
- 22:54that the what do you call it? The They look aged. you know,
- 23:04they look like they're, they've been around the block have been
- 23:07it and so that's what my lost speaker in my my go they got The
- 23:18chieftain fellow Chieftain, Greg from Raven, Moon Hearth.
- 23:22He got a box that I did sort of in the same fashion that wasn't
- 23:26a whiskey bottle box a smaller box just to keep, you know, a
- 23:29keepsake box basically. And on the, on the lid of the
- 23:32box was burned the Raven Moon Hearth by and room.
- 23:37The style of the box was also done in a way to make it look
- 23:41weathered. You know, it was stained dark
- 23:44and it was kind of burned around the edges too.
- 23:49You know, make it make it look like it had said, like I said,
- 23:52been around the block or two, Richard got a box that I made
- 23:56with his name on it to keep, you know, he's Keepsake think he's a
- 23:59big D&D guy. He's got some Crystals and
- 24:02Stones and various things. I'm like, hey, you know,
- 24:04something for you to keep your things and it's got his name
- 24:09burned into the top of it. Can't remember what his wife
- 24:13got, it was something my wife had made, it was another
- 24:15handmade item. And and then I've got I'm not
- 24:19reviewing it yet because in case my other brother who couldn't
- 24:22make it to you all this year big Jean, right?
- 24:26If he if he sees this or watches this and listens, I don't want
- 24:28to spoil the surprise, but I got you, you will give to your
- 24:30brother and we'll make sure that you get it hopefully, before the
- 24:33end of this month at least. But, um, Everybody got a
- 24:37handmade gift and I got some pretty cool things.
- 24:41And I actually wanted to show you guys and gals out here for
- 24:45those that are catching this on the YouTube and that are
- 24:48watching the video version on on Spotify, right?
- 24:58See if I can get them to pull up here.
- 25:05Let's see. Is it this one?
- 25:12Yeah, that'll work. So this is the this first one,
- 25:19right? Obviously, it's a small flag
- 25:21Banner flag, right? That is as many people know, is
- 25:26the infamous. They called Viking prayer.
- 25:30It was made popular in this TV TV in the movie and the film
- 25:36with Antonio Banderas The 13th Warrior and it has the phrase
- 25:42that was spoken amongst the Swedish roofs throughout that
- 25:45movie at least once or twice and the cool thing about this and oh
- 25:52and it also came this. So this was a gift to me from
- 25:56Richard and Charlie his wife and the pendant.
- 25:59That's there. Is a Palo Santo wooden pendant
- 26:02around some cord for like a necklace, but it smells great.
- 26:07And it's, you know, got a tree Motif burned onto it or stamped
- 26:11onto it. But the phrase of course is got
- 26:13Thor's hammer and we're going to talk a bit about that in just a
- 26:17minute because they thought, oh, they're like oh, I'm sorry.
- 26:19If it's cheesy but I'm like no it's absolutely not cheesy.
- 26:21And there's actually a bigger story behind that phrase which
- 26:24we'll talk about and I told him that during during you'll when
- 26:28we were exchanging gifts, that was a neat.
- 26:30Thing. And then the next one, you know
- 26:32that I got, is this one of these beautiful things.
- 26:36So this came to me as a gift from JM Olsen and this is of
- 26:42course, his handiwork. So you know, you guys have heard
- 26:46me talk about fee, all of it here Workshop, I'm going to
- 26:49leave information in the show notes in the description in case
- 26:52you're new and you never listen to my podcast before.
- 26:54You don't know on, you know, who I'm talking about.
- 26:57But if y'all with your workshop jmos and makes items just like,
- 27:00This and many more. And they're beautiful.
- 27:02They're stunning. So what you see here is a smoke
- 27:05wand. That's the, that's the item.
- 27:08That has three black feathers on it.
- 27:09Those are turkey, feathers on a maple.
- 27:13Wood Branch with you know blacks in you bindings for it and it's
- 27:17for its again, it's a smoked one, it's meant for ritual smoke
- 27:22sessions to help spread the smoke around or if you want to
- 27:25do a blessing of smoke, you know, it'll help wave the up
- 27:30there. So very, very cool.
- 27:31We actually used it that night at you'll, for a, for a smoke
- 27:35session. We did.
- 27:36A once there was a frankincense. Yeah, it was a frankincense and
- 27:39Palo Santo smoke session. Very relaxing.
- 27:44And then beneath the the wand is a scotomas scoffs grunts Karma
- 27:50socks if I'm mispronouncing it but it's a dagger that is made
- 27:54from Deer bone and red oak. Now, the blade part is the Oak
- 27:58and and the handle Is the deer bone, of course, it's got sinew
- 28:04bindings on the handle to, you know, improve your grip.
- 28:08But the really cool thing about that is it's red oak on the
- 28:11blade but that, that Oak, that piece of Oak is not just like
- 28:16glued or whatever to the top of a bone know.
- 28:18The, the whole blade, it's like tits tanked.
- 28:23You know what I'm saying? So like there's there's up about
- 28:26halfway down that handle into that bone is the rest of that
- 28:29Oak. so, even though it's ceremonial and in meant for, you
- 28:34know, ceremonial work the way, J input it to me said, you know,
- 28:39if you, if you had the right, You know, grip or if you have
- 28:44the right tools to do. So it could, it could definitely
- 28:47Pierce armor. It could pierce the side of a
- 28:50car. He said, I mean it's thick, boys
- 28:52thick. So those are very nice, very,
- 28:56very special. The next item that will see here
- 29:00is this Beautiful Liar. Lyre lyre or harp, right?
- 29:06So it's what it is is a lyre or harp that Greg gifted, not sure
- 29:12where he got it from, but it's really pretty.
- 29:14I don't know the first thing about playing these instruments
- 29:18or this instrument and, you know, going to try to learn but
- 29:22it came with a nice travel case. You know, it's got tuners and
- 29:27instructions and picks and stuff.
- 29:28So I'm going to do my best to learn how to play or just fool
- 29:32around on. You never know what might come
- 29:33out here on the channel, or what?
- 29:35I might just put up as far as like, a short video here or
- 29:38there on my other social media platforms.
- 29:41But those are some of the items that that really stand out.
- 29:47You know, I got some body wash and and nice stuff and an Amazon
- 29:51gift card from Patrick of course, dingo provided.
- 29:55Some really, really awesome whiskey like some like movies,
- 29:59say like rare stuff, we're talking like a unicorn bottles
- 30:01of stuff. It was a midwinter dram that he
- 30:06brought and it's a man, I think it goes for a few hundred bucks
- 30:11a bottle and we all got to share in that at you'll absolutely
- 30:16delicious one of the best rise. I think it was a rye bourbon
- 30:21Rye. I want to say anyway, whatever
- 30:23it is. It's one of the greatest things
- 30:24that I've ever tasted and then so that's what I got in the last
- 30:30thing that I made for. They're one of our tribe members
- 30:34who's not on the social medias on the Instagram.
- 30:36So Ken dude, my brother this is go.
- 30:42The dingoes cousin. He got a room set I made him a
- 30:46birch ruin set for you'll so we all did our gift exchange things
- 30:53you know we did our gift giving and then following that we held
- 30:59our symbol now. it's been awhile since I've talked about The
- 31:07specifics of sambal, and a lot of people may be wondering what
- 31:12I'm talking about, but sambal is, is a ritual in and of
- 31:15itself. And it's a ritual that involves
- 31:18drinking but not like a drinking game.
- 31:24One of the, I mean, there's plenty of other sources that
- 31:28that talk about some of the, probably the most popular one
- 31:31that you could read about what sambal is, is Is the Beowulf
- 31:37Saga, it's an Old English Saga but and there and then the way
- 31:42that they do sambal, there is one of the sources Source
- 31:46material that a lot of reconstruction.
- 31:49And he Reconstructionist heathens will go to as how
- 31:54sambal should be executed House. Humble should be done.
- 31:58There's like I said there's a lot of other reading material
- 32:02that I have yet to fully absorb I've caught It's in pieces of
- 32:07things from you know, lady lady with the me Cup and the Mead
- 32:11Hall. But the those books are rare
- 32:16finds and a matter of fact, I think I may have lady with the
- 32:20meat cup. No, I don't think I do but
- 32:24they're rare finds in their expensive.
- 32:26It's not like, you know, you just go on Amazon and drop 20 30
- 32:29bucks. Like no, you're going to be
- 32:31spending a lot of money on Amazon or any places if you're a
- 32:34very even able to find these books but um, suffice it to say
- 32:39the the ritual of sambal is again, a ritual that is that
- 32:44involves drinking so there's a law or whatever libation that's
- 32:50that's typically used. Can you use?
- 32:52Non-alcoholic beverages for sambal, why not?
- 32:55I mean again it goes back to the purpose of why we're doing what
- 32:58we're doing. If you are in a mixed audience
- 33:01or mixed crowd and there's health concerns or other social
- 33:08restrictions that prevent you from drinking alcohol or for the
- 33:14safety and well-being of others consideration of others.
- 33:16That sort of thing can some will be held without Alcohol being
- 33:23used, I say yes. Reconstructionist May disagree
- 33:26with me on that point but I will stand by what I say and say that
- 33:31the purpose behind what we're doing, does not require us to
- 33:34have alcohol, it can be a old, it could be Mead, it could be
- 33:39water and point. In fact, the rare case in point
- 33:44our sambal ritual included, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic
- 33:48beverages. Because there are some that were
- 33:52Part of sambal that do not choose to consume alcohol or
- 33:58were too young to drink alcohol. And even in a social setting,
- 34:02right? Like if it was a in your home,
- 34:06in your house sort of thing and you wanted to allow someone
- 34:09underage to drink, that's one thing, but in this application
- 34:13and for our children, for our tribe and our audience, right?
- 34:15She was just way too young dingoes daughter, right?
- 34:18So anyway, where where are Our symbol is is held inside.
- 34:25We will always do sambal indoors.
- 34:27Sambal is not sambal, unless it's indoors.
- 34:30And on that part, I will, I will staunchly standby and agree.
- 34:34You can't have some below outside unless maybe you have
- 34:39like a tent with walls and a roof over your head.
- 34:44And the reason why I say that is because of the inherent
- 34:49metaphysical. Meaning behind what sambal is
- 34:53all over the metaphysical representations of what's being
- 34:56done the containment of the well, what we're doing at
- 35:00sambal, why we're doing it which I'll try to get into here before
- 35:05I get done with all of this completely.
- 35:07But so anyway it's done indoors. And in the past we had a cup or
- 35:14horn filled with a beverage that everybody drank from.
- 35:18So it was usually at a time Mead and everybody would get the the
- 35:24horn past to them and would drink out of it and we would
- 35:26drink after each other well, ever since covid, right ever,
- 35:30since we went through this whole thing, We don't do that.
- 35:38So instead, what we do is we have a centralized cup we have A
- 35:45well of sorts that sits in the center of all of us.
- 35:52And I'll just show you for everybody that's watching,
- 35:57right? This is this is our Well, this
- 36:01is this is not used for anything other than sambal.
- 36:06So I think the lighting got that.
- 36:08Yeah, but this is used just for sambal. and, Nothing else.
- 36:17So what that represents is the well that we speak over during
- 36:23the rituals are doing the sambal ritual.
- 36:28So like I mentioned before in the past, we had a horn that we
- 36:30would pass around to each other. Now instead, what we do is we
- 36:33have this cup that stays stationary except when moved by
- 36:38a designated individual will get into that in just a moment.
- 36:43So what that well represents is again that The Well of weird,
- 36:48and everything that we speak over the is going into that.
- 36:51Well, Right. Metaphysically we are speaking
- 36:54over something. Like I'm speaking over this
- 36:55microphone my words are going into the microphone.
- 36:58Lala the words that we speak over the world are going into
- 37:01the well in addition to that we all have a cup, we all have our
- 37:04own horn, we all have our own chalice, we all have our own
- 37:07goblet whatever we're drinking out of that night.
- 37:09Some of us were drinking whiskey.
- 37:10Some of us are drinking juice. Some of us were drinking water
- 37:15and everybody had a drink. So whenever your piece to speak
- 37:19came around, whatever your time to say, your piece came. you
- 37:22would speak your piece, you would drink and you would pour a
- 37:25portion of your drink into the well, In a ritual a
- 37:32manifestation of completing that Roman Rite.
- 37:35What I'm saying right now, what I'm doing right now I'm speaking
- 37:38I'm drinking it and I am now pouring it into the well as and
- 37:41that's our way we do some how you guys do it and when nobody
- 37:46else does it, that's you but that's what we do to live that
- 37:52thing out. So the next thing that we talked
- 37:55about or what sambal is for is is usually a time for us to Of
- 38:00toasts boasts and Oaths, this may be very non-traditional in
- 38:08that sense, but we've found great success and we've had good
- 38:12luck from from doing it this way.
- 38:14So we usually start by opening the the sambal ritual up for
- 38:20those to give toasts to people. Now, we don't start at one
- 38:24particular area of the room. And go in a circular motion.
- 38:29We don't necessarily start with the most senior person there and
- 38:33go to the youngest. We don't really have a
- 38:36continuing format of who goes first for what the way it is
- 38:41determined for who goes when to say their thing is not
- 38:46determined by anyone. That's like four, no words.
- 38:51If I were to go first, it's not my decision to decide who goes
- 38:54next in traditional sambal in any historical.
- 38:58Somebody the person to dictate the flow of things was the lady
- 39:04of the hall and there was a reason for that.
- 39:07The reason being that she is the metaphysical representation of
- 39:13the bearer of the well, like the norns as it were, like, she's
- 39:16that representation of The Keeper of the well.
- 39:18So the cup doesn't Move the the horn doesn't move, whatever you
- 39:21were drinking out of or pouring her drinks into does not move
- 39:23until. And unless the lady of a hall
- 39:26moves it now for some like four in our case, right?
- 39:33The lady of the hall, my wife, right?
- 39:35Was like I don't really feel like I want to do that and it's,
- 39:38you know, she's just, she wasn't comfortable like being that kind
- 39:41of like center of attention. So we adjust, we make
- 39:44adjustments. We do things.
- 39:45Slightly different to make it work for us.
- 39:50And instead of that, she just was the drink poorer.
- 39:53Like she would pour the drinks out and and Dole them out to
- 39:57the, to the guests. So that way she's still
- 40:01partaking in the sambal ritual, by carrying the cup of drink
- 40:05that the person is partaking of and giving it to them, and then
- 40:10they're putting their own drink into the cup.
- 40:14But the cup doesn't move until Whether it's her or whether we
- 40:19had another designee to do, that moves the cup and decides who
- 40:25goes next. So, when the designee the, you
- 40:34know, when someone was done giving a toast, like the next
- 40:37part, the next person to whom the cup would go, right?
- 40:40So let's say this was the, the, the, the main cup that we were
- 40:44all pouring our drinks into, right?
- 40:46Like if this, if I was, And I wouldn't move the cup myself.
- 40:49The designee that we had moved the cup from me to the next
- 40:53person and it was up to that person to decide who was next.
- 40:58So that's how we worked around the thing behind it again, going
- 41:03back to the purpose. Why are we doing what we're
- 41:06doing? We're not doing it just to be
- 41:08for the sake of being historical.
- 41:09If it doesn't fit us in our demographic of doesn't fit well
- 41:13for us, if someone feels uncomfortable doing something,
- 41:15where I want to force that upon anybody to that, Extent.
- 41:18So, what we do? We adapt, we still made it close
- 41:22enough to the traditional symbol ritual.
- 41:24Why it was done back, then, it was done a certain way, right?
- 41:27But we're doing it now for that certain purpose and for that
- 41:30certain reason. So we still kind of had the
- 41:31elements of the old, but made it modern and made it workable for
- 41:36us in the here and now, so we do that.
- 41:39We do usually start with toasts then move into boasts.
- 41:44So once everybody is Done giving a toast.
- 41:49To whoever, whether it's the gods, our ancestors, the the
- 41:53Forgotten, not the forgotten Fallen.
- 41:55But the Fallen we do not wash wish to forget.
- 41:57We want to raise a toast to them and remember them fondly, and
- 42:00especially well at, you'll, so whoever we wish to toast.
- 42:05That's, you know, once that's done, we move into boasts.
- 42:08So any greatness that is achieved across the tribe, you
- 42:13know, any stories of success, you know, Fortune, good fortune
- 42:17that, you know, that sort of thing.
- 42:19Those are good things that we wish to share and be joyful
- 42:22about with each other. And we want to hear your boast
- 42:26about that. You know, what did you get to do
- 42:27this year? That makes you better now than
- 42:29you were before and you know, however, big or small doesn't?
- 42:33You know, it's not, it's not a competition.
- 42:35It's just we want to hear that. And we want that goodness.
- 42:38We want that look, that strong look that came from with you
- 42:41into this year to continue and which so we added to the well,
- 42:44you speak your piece, you you boast about it and then you pour
- 42:48it into the well, And then, once everyone's done with their
- 42:51boasts is the time for Oaths. Now, Odes, especially around.
- 42:55You all are very, very powerful and and, and, and particularly
- 43:01more powerful around you'll and they are also binding oath.
- 43:08Son in Henry are binding, which is why, you know, there was such
- 43:12a strong penalty to pay of being an oathbreaker.
- 43:18So The north is more than just a promise I did a video about this
- 43:22a while ago which I will annotate in a card for the
- 43:28YouTubers that are watching and then link it in the show notes
- 43:31and then down in the description of course to for everyone else.
- 43:34That's absorbing this on the podcast platform but check it
- 43:37out. It's the power of the oath and
- 43:39why we do what we do. Why we do it the way we do it.
- 43:42So the oath is more than just a promise, right?
- 43:45It's not. It's more than just me saying, I
- 43:47promise to be better, right? II promise to lose weight, I
- 43:50promise to you know finish this essay or whatever.
- 43:55It's more than just that right? An oath is something that is a
- 44:01social. We enter into a social contract
- 44:06when owes are given because not only is the person who's giving
- 44:10the oath held responsible but everyone around who's present
- 44:15and witness to that oath being given is responsible.
- 44:19Well, so it's very, very important.
- 44:21If you guys are, are looking to incorporate the boasts host and
- 44:26toasts thing it's humble into your you'll, or whenever, you
- 44:32know, when you are, should you decide that an oath is going to
- 44:36be given by anyone? It's very, very shy.
- 44:40Very, very strongly recommend that you talk about it prior to
- 44:44doing it. Don't just throw it out onto the
- 44:47table and be like, all right, guys.
- 44:49Here's my oath. Talk to your tribal leaders,
- 44:53talk to your kin, talk to the people in your tribe about it.
- 44:56Prior to the fact, don't spring something like that on them
- 44:58because at that point, they're kind of in it to went there in
- 45:03it. Now there, that that, that weird
- 45:05has been especially tied and if something were to happen where
- 45:09you don't fulfill your oath, not only are you dishonorable for
- 45:13but you're bringing bad luck on the rest of the group. so, we
- 45:22had I had an oath to give this year, which I'm not going to go
- 45:30into details over here because it was done sacred.
- 45:35You know, what we was done was very sacred and then I'm not
- 45:39going to give it out here to tie myself, to anything else.
- 45:41I did it amongst My Tribe and I did it in their confidence and
- 45:47they are going to hold me accountable.
- 45:48As I hold myself accountable, they are now ritually bound and
- 45:52inbound. An Action that we've entered,
- 45:54that, that social contract together and and everyone that
- 45:59was present agreed to that. And so just be aware, right?
- 46:04And be mindful of that. It's very, very good.
- 46:07It can be, it can be very, very good for your tribe or for your
- 46:11Gap, you know, for your Gathering of people your
- 46:13Kindred, whatever, when toads are given.
- 46:16And it's a great way for the for the tribe to be to become close
- 46:22together like that because And it's not just not just my neck
- 46:26on the line, right? It's not just my reputation,
- 46:29it's not just my honor. Everybody else has a vested.
- 46:32Interest was like, hey dude, if you, if you don't fulfill your
- 46:35oath, if you fall short on here, you're messing with my weird.
- 46:39Now, your mess with my luck and I ain't having that so everyone
- 46:43is vested in it and, you know, makes makes it that much more
- 46:48powerful. So, by next, you'll get the oath
- 46:52that I gave. EV.
- 46:55By next, you'll I will be able to give a Bose that I fulfilled
- 47:00it and I'll have something to show for it.
- 47:02In the rest of the tribe can be rejoice and feeling that good
- 47:07luck and Fortune as well. So after after after we do
- 47:15sambal, right? Like, once all of the rounds are
- 47:17done and we finish it all off, the, the contents of our cup are
- 47:22not consumed by By the tribe because I mean at that point
- 47:25there's you know whiskey beard juice why.
- 47:28I mean it's a mean-looking cocktail at the end of it all
- 47:32that gets added to the well. And so what it does do though is
- 47:35it gets we always have like this past year like this past you
- 47:40all. I mean we made it a very
- 47:41conscious effort to always have fire burning.
- 47:46I started the fire early in the afternoon to make sure that we
- 47:48had a hot bed of coals. And despite the rain that came
- 47:51through, later on that night, the fire.
- 47:54Going like, we kept that fire hot and roaring outside.
- 47:57And so, at the end of sambal, the contents of our cup that
- 48:02went into that. Well though, the condoms of the
- 48:03well, get given back to the sacred, and that sort of seals
- 48:07it that seals it for us, we're done speaking.
- 48:10What we're speaking, it's in the well, and now we ritually
- 48:13destroyed in the fire and send it to the sacred to solidify
- 48:17everything and that's our sambal.
- 48:18That's how we do it. So maybe there's some
- 48:21inspiration for you guys out there.
- 48:22Just always remember, There's there's purpose behind what
- 48:25we're doing and what my purpose, or our tribes purposes.
- 48:29May not be the same as your tribes purpose.
- 48:32Do what you do with purpose, your intention means a lot, but
- 48:37know what your purpose is, Right?
- 48:39Know what it is that you're doing and why you're doing, what
- 48:42result are you looking to achieve?
- 48:44What is the purpose behind? What you do in the way you do
- 48:48it, right? So always remember that.
- 48:53Don't jump, just, you know, take what I say, or what, anyone on a
- 48:57podcast or YouTube channel, or whatever, think of that, don't
- 49:00just take what we say and be like, oh good because he said
- 49:02it, that's the way I'm gonna do it.
- 49:04Hey if you like the idea and you want to make it your own and you
- 49:07want to work it into nobody copyright.
- 49:09We're not copyright and anything here.
- 49:10It's not say no, you can't do it that boot because the holy
- 49:13really folk, were the only ones that can do it.
- 49:15Like, no, we came up with this based off of ideas that we heard
- 49:19about or saw a red or learned ourselves and made it our Our
- 49:22own. So however you wish to You know
- 49:28incorporate those ideas with you and yours and by all means,
- 49:32right? No, no no issue whatsoever and
- 49:37again after sambal that's it like nobody has to go home.
- 49:43Let's let's see. You know, be safe, let's be
- 49:44responsible. Continue drinking have
- 49:46Fellowship sing play music. We did some.
- 49:49Drumming that night. We did a great smoke session
- 49:51like I mentioned earlier that that smoke one that I showed you
- 49:54all. Was used for a Palo Santo and
- 49:57frankincense. Smoke session.
- 49:59So, I got this really nice resin charcoal burner for you'll, from
- 50:06my wife, we gave our gifts early to each other closer back to
- 50:10like the Christmas time frame because we had a bunch of gifts
- 50:13that we get for each other. You know, we always get a small
- 50:17group of gifts and So, I had that in with that resin burner
- 50:26came, a whole bunch of resin. All different kinds, and
- 50:28frankincense myrrh. Copal, great Palo, Santo Pine,
- 50:34all kinds of stuff. So, I opened it up.
- 50:36I said, guys, we want to smoke on tonight.
- 50:38Literally, what do you want? What do you want to breathe in?
- 50:39And let's read about, you know what, these certain things are
- 50:42good for and Patrick are lost speaker.
- 50:43He said Palo Santo and I'm a big fan of Frankincense.
- 50:47Just the the sense of calm And the sense of clarity and chill
- 50:53that comes over me when I'm breathing in frankincense.
- 50:56So, we did some Palo Santo and then before it finished burning,
- 51:00added some frankincense on there and just got a nice smoke
- 51:03session going, man. We just breathe in those, you
- 51:07know, those resins and had a few more drinks and whatnot that
- 51:12night and then people just started to, you know, eventually
- 51:16leave. It was a it was a winter weather
- 51:18advisory for that night. So People that did come, you
- 51:22know, it was, you know, make sure that you guys first of all,
- 51:25aren't drinking so much that you can't leave, right?
- 51:29And we made, sure everybody was sober enough to that was
- 51:32drinking. They either had enough time to
- 51:35sit and be be sober enough to drive or stay the night which
- 51:40nobody needed to do that. It wasn't, there wasn't that
- 51:42much being drunk, that night, it wasn't as Intense, or a crazy
- 51:46over. You all, as I've said, as I've
- 51:48been a part of in the past, there's been some year.
- 51:50Years and some uol's man where I'm like, we went nuts.
- 51:54That's okay. Just be responsible about it.
- 51:57But yeah. So I hope that, you know, you
- 52:00all enjoyed me talking to you, pumpkin Tolkien talking to you
- 52:07about our tribes, you'll Feast for 2022.
