- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Waffer, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland, County
- 0:12of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37People who do wicked and evil things that we read about and
- 0:40hear about aren't beyond the saving work of God.
- 0:44And you think about your own life today if you are here and
- 0:49you're a believer in Jesus Christ, He did something very
- 0:53wonderful for you and me. He opened our eyes that were
- 0:57blind. We were dead before the Spirit
- 1:01of God enlightened us and made us alive in Christ.
- 1:05So we're so fortunate to be saved if we are saved here
- 1:09today. There's nothing you can do to
- 1:12secure your own eternal life. There's nothing anyone can do.
- 1:16But there is a way. It's through Jesus.
- 1:19Through his sacrifice on the cross, you can be forgiven of
- 1:23your sins and have eternal life. Today, Pastor Clark will show
- 1:27you that no matter how far you feel from God, you can still
- 1:30come to Him and be restored. Paul was a man who used to
- 1:34persecute Christians, but God changed him and used him to do
- 1:38great things for the Kingdom, just like he can with you now.
- 1:42Here's Pastor Clark in Acts Chapter 9 with today's edition
- 1:45of Living Waters of Grace. Acts Chapter 9.
- 1:50Lord God, we are grateful today for the power of your Holy
- 1:53Spirit that's very present in this place and we all surrender
- 1:57and yield to the will of the Spirit of the living God.
- 2:00That this is the work of the Spirit, the Word of God, the
- 2:04church, the ministry, the gospel, evangelism, all these
- 2:09things are developed and worked by the work of the Spirit of the
- 2:14living God. Lord, we pray the day, Father,
- 2:17that you would touch each of our hearts in the church today
- 2:20around the world to renew us, Lord, to revive us, to cause us
- 2:25to go deeper in you. Lord, we will study about the
- 2:29Apostle Paul before he became an apostle when he was a Pagan
- 2:34unbeliever who hated and persecuted Christians.
- 2:37And Father, we are a very aware of the fact that Paul wasn't
- 2:42seeking you, but you sought him. And Lord, you seek each of us in
- 2:47a specific time in our lives. You get our attention and you
- 2:50cause us, Lord, to turn to you. Lord, we don't turn in and of
- 2:55ourselves, Father, we. The Bible tells us there's none
- 2:59that seeketh after God. No, not one.
- 3:02And so Lord, we pray that you would just work and draw each of
- 3:07us closer to you today. And we just pray you would bless
- 3:11us as we study together in Jesus name, Amen.
- 3:16Amen. Well, let's look in the book of
- 3:18Acts, Acts Chapter 9, we're going to study about this
- 3:22experience that Paul's had. It's quite amazing when you read
- 3:27this because I don't remember reading about someone's
- 3:32salvation experience like we're reading in Acts a day.
- 3:35This isn't really happened this way to anybody else, at least
- 3:38what I read in the Bible. What's been contained in the
- 3:41Bible? All of you that know Christ, you
- 3:44had an encounter with the Lord and you are believers.
- 3:47You're following him because you had a personal encounter with
- 3:51the living God. That's the only way you become a
- 3:54Christian. You have to have a relationship,
- 3:56an encounter with God, and that encounter is established by the
- 4:03work of God's Spirit. None of us can take credit for
- 4:07us coming to faith in Christ. It's the work of God.
- 4:11He comes after us, and even as believers, He still comes after
- 4:15us. He's he's pursuing us to to walk
- 4:18closer with him to have a deeper relationship with Him and the
- 4:23things you're challenged by in life, the things you're
- 4:26convicted by the Holy Spirit in your life in regard to walking
- 4:30closer with the Lord or being more obedient or being more pure
- 4:34purified we find is a continual work of the Spirit until we
- 4:38leave this earth. God's always working in us that
- 4:43he might work through us. And many of the things that we
- 4:47learn, we unfortunately many times have to learn various
- 4:51times over and over again. We have a tendency sometimes to
- 4:55make the same mistakes or sometimes fall into the same
- 4:59patterns of sin. This is the legacy of of the
- 5:03believer of learning how to be sanctified, how to walk with
- 5:06God. None of us are perfect yet, but
- 5:09we are being perfected by the work of the Holy Spirit.
- 5:12And that's what God uses his word for.
- 5:15He changes our hearts. He changes our minds, our way of
- 5:19thinking. So we begin to think the way God
- 5:22thinks and not thinking the way the world would think in the
- 5:25fallen nature, like you think of people, you know, you'll say,
- 5:30oh, that person will never get saved.
- 5:32They're so evil. They're so wicked.
- 5:34That person's beyond salvation. No one's beyond salvation.
- 5:39The politicians aren't beyond God's saving hand.
- 5:44People who do wicked and evil things that we read about and
- 5:48hear about aren't beyond the saving work of God.
- 5:52And you think about your own life today.
- 5:56If you are here and you're a believer in Jesus Christ, He did
- 5:59something very wonderful for you and me.
- 6:03He opened our eyes that were blind.
- 6:05We were dead before the Spirit of God enlightened us and made
- 6:10us alive in Christ. So we're so fortunate to be
- 6:15saved. If we are saved here today.
- 6:18It's his goodness, it's his grace, it's his mercy.
- 6:21We didn't do anything. We didn't earn our way, we
- 6:25didn't pay our way. There was nothing we could do
- 6:27but ask God for mercy. And he gave us mercy.
- 6:33So we read about Saul of Tarsus, and we read in the previous
- 6:38chapter how he was responsible for having Stephen martyred in
- 6:44stone. Saul was a member of the
- 6:48Sanhedrin, he was a Pharisee, he was a very zealous Jew.
- 6:54He was so zealous that his whole focus was to persecute
- 6:57Christians. He thought Christianity was a
- 7:00sect, a false religion. He didn't believe in a literal
- 7:03resurrection of Jesus Christ, even though he probably heard
- 7:06Jesus teaching. He was probably one of the men
- 7:09in the Sanhedrin that was going to, you know, persecute Jesus
- 7:14and have him crucified. He was obviously the one who was
- 7:18there when Stephen was stoned. And so he had no interest in in
- 7:23Christianity. He was really believing that he
- 7:27was serving God by trying to stamp out the faith of
- 7:31Christianity. Paul grew up as a man or young
- 7:37man who was exposed to Grecian culture.
- 7:40So his his parents were Pharisees and they were Hebrews
- 7:44and the Jews were broken into two groups, the Hebrews and the
- 7:47Hellenists. The Hellenists were those who
- 7:50were impacted by Greek culture. So Paul had sort of both
- 7:53understandings of legalism and then arts and that kind of stuff
- 7:57from the Greek theater at the time.
- 8:00And as a result of that, he was primed, if you may, by God to
- 8:06have a background that would be able to take the gospel to the
- 8:09Jew, to the Gentile and also speak before kings.
- 8:14Interesting fact about being a member of the Sanhedrin.
- 8:18You had to be married to be part of the Sanhedrin.
- 8:20So somehow Paul was married at one time.
- 8:23There's nothing in the Scriptures that give us any
- 8:25indication of where his wife went or what happened.
- 8:28Did she die? Did she leave him when he became
- 8:30a Christian? Tradition says he had two sons,
- 8:33One went with him and one went with his wife.
- 8:36But we can't document that because that's not in Scripture.
- 8:39But this a lot of fascinating background with this guy.
- 8:44He had an attorney mind. He was an attorney kind of guy.
- 8:47He he understood law to the NTH degree.
- 8:51And so this is a day he's heading up towards Damascus to
- 8:56persecute Christians. His he got report from the
- 9:00authorities that he was authorized to go up representing
- 9:06the authorities at that time to deal with those of the way that
- 9:10was what was Christian Christianity was called the way.
- 9:13So we'll pick it up in verse one.
- 9:15Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the
- 9:18disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked
- 9:22letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus so that
- 9:26if he found any who were of the way.
- 9:28And again, that's what Christianity was called WAY,
- 9:32capital WAY. Jesus said I am the way, I am
- 9:35the truth, I am the life. No man comes of the Father but
- 9:38through me. So that's how they came up with
- 9:40this, following the way, Jesus being the way, and they were
- 9:43called the sect of the way, whether men or women, he might
- 9:47bring them bound to Jerusalem. And so as he journeyed, he came
- 9:51near Damascus. So his whole focus on this trip
- 9:54up to Damascus, which was about a six day journey about 130
- 9:59miles northeast of Jerusalem, he's going up with a specific
- 10:03intention to get people and pull them out of their homes and the
- 10:07synagogues and bring them into Jerusalem to be eventually put
- 10:11in prison or to be martyred. That was his whole focus.
- 10:15There was probably about 70 synagogues in Damascus.
- 10:19And what was interesting was there was so many people, Jewish
- 10:22people becoming believers that it was from the point of view of
- 10:26the Pharisees in the Jewish system.
- 10:28It was getting out of control. And so he's journeying up there
- 10:33to, to do this work of persecution.
- 10:36Suddenly a light shone around him from heaven.
- 10:42This light, it wasn't the sun, it was the the light of of God's
- 10:47presence, the Shekinah glory, the light that was represented
- 10:52as God moved by the pillar of fire, by night in the cloud, by
- 10:56day as the Tabernacle move through the wilderness.
- 11:00The kind of light that Moses experienced when the Bush was on
- 11:04fire. These are what would you call
- 11:09supernatural epiphanies that have occurred throughout the
- 11:13history of the Bible where God would show up in his glory.
- 11:18Jesus represented that at the Transfiguration where he was
- 11:21full of light. And Peter, James, and John
- 11:24experienced that light. It blew them away.
- 11:27And that's when Moses and Elijah appeared with Jesus on the Mount
- 11:31of Transfiguration. So they saw him in his
- 11:33transfigured state, his glorified state.
- 11:36And so now Paul is encountering Christ in this light.
- 11:41And the only way anybody could be an apostle, a true apostle,
- 11:45they had to be eyewitness account of knowing Jesus
- 11:49physically and personally. So this is what's occurring
- 11:52right now. This light shines around him
- 11:54from heaven. Then he fell to the ground.
- 11:56So he's walking with his entourage to to deal with
- 12:00persecuting Christians. This light shining around him
- 12:03and he falls to the ground. The light was so
- 12:07all-encompassing that it had to put fear in him.
- 12:10And the first thing he thought about, I got to get to get down
- 12:14and get some cover here. And as he fell to the ground, he
- 12:18heard a voice saying to him, Saul, Saul, why are you
- 12:22persecuting me? So when there's persecution that
- 12:25happens against Christians or the church or in the world
- 12:29regarding people who are following the Lord, the
- 12:32persecution is at Jesus, not you and me.
- 12:35We might think we're being held out to dry because we follow the
- 12:40Lord and we represent him or whatever.
- 12:42It's never about us. All this persecution is always
- 12:46targeted at Jesus Christ. And so he specifically says to
- 12:50Paul, hey, why? He didn't say, why are you
- 12:52hassling my followers? And he's saying you're
- 12:55persecuting me. This is personal between Saul
- 12:59and between Jesus. And he said, who are you, Lord?
- 13:04And that's a great question to ask.
- 13:06I think that's one of the first questions that any of us should
- 13:09ask. And whenever God's dealing with
- 13:11your life and he's got you in a situation of conflict or crisis
- 13:16or tragedy or difficulty and things are going wrong in life,
- 13:19and you begin to know that somehow there's this creator God
- 13:24that's dealing with you personally.
- 13:26You don't know anything about him until you're born again,
- 13:29until you come to faith in Jesus Christ.
- 13:32She might be religious like Paul was.
- 13:34Paul knew how to pray, but he never prayed from his heart.
- 13:36He prayed written prayers of Judaism.
- 13:39He followed the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
- 13:42Who is this God, the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 13:45But he wasn't Privy to the understanding that Jesus was the
- 13:49Messiah. So he's asking a a very good
- 13:51question. Who are you, Lord?
- 13:53And then the Lord said, I am Jesus whom you are persecuting.
- 13:58It is hard for you to kick against the goads that may or
- 14:02may not be in your translation. But these goads were long
- 14:05prodding sticks that were used by the people that were farming
- 14:10with ox to keep the ox under control.
- 14:14And now Paul, this this goading, he's being convicted the the
- 14:18preparation of Paul's heart in regard to this encounter with
- 14:22the Lord had to be impacted by what he observed whenever
- 14:26Stephen was stoned and heard the things that Stephen said and saw
- 14:31the glow and the shine of the Lord God on the countenance of
- 14:36of of Stephen, as he was saying, hold us not to their charge,
- 14:40this crime of, of martyring me, the first martyr of the church,
- 14:44Stephen. So all this influence, all these
- 14:48past experiences had a point from God's perspective and
- 14:54waking Paul up, bringing him out of death into life.
- 14:57Everyone of you in your lives have encounter with God, whether
- 15:02you realize it or not. And many times you'll say, well,
- 15:05why is this happening to me, God or why is why is this going on
- 15:08or this isn't fair. You don't even know God yet
- 15:11maybe, and you're talking to him because you know, down deep
- 15:15inside in the conscience, the Bible says everyone knows
- 15:18there's a Creator and we're all accountable to him.
- 15:21And so he's interacting with this Creator who's manifests
- 15:26before him now, and we also interact with this Creator in
- 15:29regard to daily living. I know when the Spirit of God is
- 15:34dealing with me about something specifically that I need to
- 15:39confront or deal with in my own life personally, and I'm sure
- 15:42you do too. We don't get away with anything.
- 15:45God sees it all, He knows it all.
- 15:48And God's whole goal in creating this world and creating us was
- 15:53to make a people that would follow after Him.
- 15:56But He gave us a free will to follow our own will, which most
- 15:59of us do, don't we, until we encounter God.
- 16:04And so this is what's beginning to happen to Saul.
- 16:09And the Lord is beginning to speak to him in verse 6.
- 16:13So he is a Saul. He's trembling and he's
- 16:17astonished. And he simply says, Lord, what
- 16:21do you want me to do? Boy, that's that's powerful,
- 16:24isn't it? Not asking any more questions.
- 16:28It's so obvious who he's dealing with and he humbles himself.
- 16:32He's being humbled. And what do you want me to do?
- 16:37And the Lord says to him, arise and go into the city and you
- 16:42will be told what you must do. So the Lord gives us steps to
- 16:46take. He doesn't tell you or me like
- 16:49the big picture of what our life's going to look like from
- 16:51the from the day we're born to the day we die or the day we
- 16:54become believers and how our lives will begin to change from
- 16:57that point on. He doesn't show us all that.
- 17:00He just gives us one step at a time and he tells Paul, get up
- 17:06and go into the city and you will be told what you must do.
- 17:10So in verse 7, the men who journeyed with him stood
- 17:13speechless. So these guys are used to Paul
- 17:15being in control and having it all together and has an agenda
- 17:20and a plan. They're looking at all this
- 17:23right now and they don't understand what's going on.
- 17:25They don't even know what to say.
- 17:27They hear this voice, but they can't understand the words that
- 17:30are being said. Only Paul is getting the
- 17:33message. They just know something
- 17:35supernatural is happening, but they don't hear the voice of God
- 17:39and the words that Paul heard it.
- 17:41They just happen to observe what's happening, and so they
- 17:45hear this voice, but they, they, they don't see anyone.
- 17:49Then Saul rose from the ground, and when his eyes were open, he
- 17:52saw no one. So Paul is blind spiritually, as
- 17:56we all are until our eyes are open by Christ.
- 18:00But now he's blind physically. Why would this happen?
- 18:06Well, this is the plan of God. He gets up.
- 18:10He doesn't have any human ability right now.
- 18:13All his faculties basically have been eradicated.
- 18:16His pride, his ego, his ability to be in control, his focus, his
- 18:22vision, his plan. Totally kibosh non existent now
- 18:29he's like a little kid basically.
- 18:32He he needs help. He can't even see where he's
- 18:34gone. He has to be led by these people
- 18:38who are with him on this journey to to go persecute Christians.
- 18:43He sees no one when his eyes are open.
- 18:45So they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus and he
- 18:50was three days without sight. He neither ate nor drank.
- 18:55So this is a force fast. He's fasting and he's praying.
- 19:02He's waiting to hear what is next.
- 19:08Three days. It's a long time to not eat, to
- 19:12not drink, and not to speak with anyone.
- 19:15He's on the receiving end of, of hearing God downloading into his
- 19:20heart, into his spirit, the things of the Kingdom.
- 19:24It would be fascinating to to know all the details of what he
- 19:27was experienced at that time. And he talks about them later on
- 19:31in some of the epistles that he wrote down the road.
- 19:34But nonetheless, he's bankrupt of human ability at this point
- 19:38in time. Now in verse 10, it tells us
- 19:42another interesting story here. There was a certain disciple at
- 19:47Damascus named Ananias. That word means gracious. 1 and
- 19:53to him the Lord said in a vision, Ananias.
- 19:56So Ananias is a just down to earth human being like we are
- 20:01called a disciple, Christian follower of the way doesn't give
- 20:05a whole lot of detail what he was up to, what he did, but he
- 20:08was a summon that God chose to be used in the Apostle Paul's
- 20:13life. God uses you and me in people's
- 20:17lives, one person at a time. Matter of fact, the most
- 20:21powerful things that happened in our lives as Christians happened
- 20:26one-on-one with someone else, one-on-one with God first and
- 20:30then one-on-one with us and someone else that wants to know
- 20:34something about what it is we know.
- 20:36And we get a chance to tell them about Jesus and about what
- 20:41happened to us. Ananias had a vision, and in
- 20:45Book of Acts it talks about visions, and people still have
- 20:48visions. It's hard to discern if a vision
- 20:52is truly from God or is from having too much pizza the night
- 20:55before, right? A dream, a vision, whatever it
- 20:58might be. But whenever a vision is given
- 21:02by God, the purpose of that vision will come to pass in
- 21:06time. This vision was very specific.
- 21:10He said, When he's having this vision, here I am the Lord.
- 21:14And the Lord said to him, Arise and go to the street called
- 21:17straight. And there is a street called
- 21:20Straight in Damascus to this day.
- 21:25And he said, go to this street called Straight and inquire at
- 21:29the House of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus, for
- 21:34behold, he is praying. Isn't this amazing?
- 21:38I mean, he's getting specific, detailed information.
- 21:42God doesn't give us vagueness when He's leading us.
- 21:45He's very specific about what it is He wants us to do, and it's
- 21:50all through the Scripture. You don't have to be a genius to
- 21:53understand when when the Bible says husbands love your wives
- 21:56like Christ loves the church. That is a direct communication
- 22:02from God to you about how you're supposed to live in your home
- 22:06with your wife. You don't have to make it
- 22:09complicated. You're either learning to do
- 22:11that or you're not doing it. But God in His Word is very
- 22:15specific from Genesis to the end of Revelation as to what His
- 22:19will is for us as believers and how to live for the Kingdom of
- 22:22God. And He's telling Ananias, this
- 22:25is what you're going to do. This is where you're going to
- 22:27go. This is the house you're going
- 22:29to go. This is the person you're going
- 22:31to speak to. And I love what it says here.
- 22:33You're going to get down there and behold, he is praying.
- 22:37So God sees Paul, He sees he sees Saul at this time.
- 22:41He's not called Paul yet. And he sees you and me when
- 22:43we're praying. He sees us when we're alone with
- 22:46him, when we're waiting upon him, when we're crying out to
- 22:49him, when we're seeking to know of him or to hear about him.
- 22:53He's always present. God is never absent from any of
- 22:58our lives. God is omnipresent.
- 23:01He's able to be present everywhere at the same time, in
- 23:06every human being's life. That in, in and of itself should
- 23:10blow our minds of how great our God is.
- 23:12He's always there, present. He sees what we're up to.
- 23:18He knows our thoughts. He knows our fears.
- 23:20He knows our anxieties. He knows our dreams, our hopes,
- 23:23our vision, our purpose, our desires.
- 23:25He sees it all. And He sees specifically right
- 23:28now this man he's dealing with named Saul, that he's praying
- 23:33and he's hearing the prayer. And in a vision, he has seen a
- 23:36man named Ananias coming and putting his hand on him so that
- 23:41he might receive his sight. So this is really something, not
- 23:43only is God like giving Ananias the details, but he's saying I
- 23:48already told Paul that you're on your way and you're going to lay
- 23:51hands on him and he's going to be able to see again physically.
- 23:57Thank you for listening to this edition of Living Waters of
- 24:00Grace. Pastor Clark is teaching us
- 24:02about the book of Acts in this series.
- 24:05Acts is a powerful and unique part of Scripture, not just
- 24:08because it records the spread of the gospel geographically from
- 24:12Jerusalem to the ends of the earth, but also culturally.
- 24:15Acts shows us how the message of Jesus moved beyond its Jewish
