- 0:39This morning scripture comes from the Gospel of Mark Chapter
- 0:449, starting verse 14. When they returned to the other
- 0:50disciples, they saw a large crowd surrounding them and some
- 0:54teachers of religious law were arguing with them.
- 0:57When the crowd saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with all, and
- 1:01they ran to greet him. What is all this arguing about?
- 1:05Jesus asked. One of the men in the crowd
- 1:08spoke up and said, Teacher, I brought my son so you could heal
- 1:12him. He is possessed by an evil
- 1:14spirit that won't let him talk, and whenever the the spirit
- 1:18seizes him, it throws him violently to the ground.
- 1:22Then he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and becomes
- 1:26rigid. So I asked your disciples to
- 1:29cast out the evil spirit, but they couldn't do it.
- 1:33Jesus said to them, You faithless people, how long must
- 1:37I be with you? How long must I put up with you?
- 1:41Bring the boy to me. So they brought the boy.
- 1:44But when the evil spirit saw Jesus, it threw the child into a
- 1:48violent convulsion, and he fell to the ground, riding and
- 1:52foaming at the mouth. How long has this been
- 1:55happening? Jesus asked the boy's father.
- 1:58He replied, Since he was a little boy, the spear often
- 2:01throws him into the fire or into water, trying to kill him.
- 2:06Have mercy on us and help us if you can.
- 2:10What do you mean if I can? Jesus asked.
- 2:14Anything is possible if a person believes.
- 2:17The Father instantly cried out. I do believe, but help me
- 2:21overcome my unbelief. When Jesus saw that the crowd of
- 2:26onlookers was growing, he rebuked the evil spirit.
- 2:30Listen, you spirit, that makes this boy unable to hear and
- 2:34speak, He said, I command you to come out of this child and never
- 2:39enter him again. Then the spirit screamed and
- 2:43threw the boy into another violent convulsion and left him.
- 2:48The boy appeared to be dead. A murmur ran through the crowd
- 2:51as people said, He's dead. But Jesus took him by the hand
- 2:57and helped him to his feet, and he stood up.
- 3:00Afterward, when Jesus was alone in the house with his disciples,
- 3:04they asked him, Why couldn't we cast out that evil spirit?
- 3:08Jesus replied, This kind can be cast out only by prayer.
- 3:14This is the word of God for the people of God.
- 3:16Thanks be to God, when we were preparing to go to Uganda for
- 3:23our first term, we we hit a point in our fundraising where
- 3:28we'd kind of stalled. We had reached a certain point
- 3:31and and couldn't get past it. We got pretty discouraged about.
- 3:34We were at the point where we either needed to get that last
- 3:38bit of funding or decide we weren't going to go.
- 3:43So we started praying more intensely about and God began to
- 3:48bring the funding in in a way that we didn't expect.
- 3:52There was progress toward our going.
- 3:54We started to feel hopeful and that's when it started right.
- 4:00Tim, who was not even 2 1/2, but who seemed much older than our
- 4:07six month old Benjamin. Weren't they cute?
- 4:11I don't know what happened, but they were cute.
- 4:15Tim, however, he started waking up in the middle of the night.
- 4:20He was screaming. He was inconsolable, almost
- 4:25uncontrollable. There was nothing we could do to
- 4:30calm him down. We felt so incredibly helpless.
- 4:37We just kept asking Jesus to make it stop.
- 4:41We we recognized it as spiritual warfare, but even though we were
- 4:46preparing to go and serve as missionary, we didn't have
- 4:50categories. We didn't have a box to put it
- 4:53in for, for what that meant that we were supposed to do about it.
- 4:59So we asked people to pray for Tim's sleep.
- 5:02We prayed for Tim's sleep, but it didn't seem to change because
- 5:09at that point I don't think we were addressing the real issue.
- 5:17Those experiences have given me a soft spot in my heart for the
- 5:23Father in this story that Jeremy just read for us this morning.
- 5:29It's not hard for me to imagine what it would be like to be in
- 5:33this Father's shoes. He's been watching his son being
- 5:38afflicted since he was just a little boy, maybe around 2 1/2.
- 5:43I don't know. We don't know.
- 5:48The story doesn't tell us how old the child is now, but we can
- 5:51assume that this has been happening for some time.
- 5:55And this Father, and I'm speaking from my own experience
- 5:58here, surely felt helpless. I'm sure he had tried everything
- 6:04he knew to try, but nothing changed.
- 6:10And then imagine what would have happened within him, with it
- 6:14within his heart, the hope that would have risen up when he
- 6:18heard the news of what this Jesus of Nazareth was doing.
- 6:23How Jesus was going throughout the region teaching with
- 6:27authority and healing those who are sick, and even casting out
- 6:31demons from those who were oppressed and not just Jesus,
- 6:35right? We've talked about how there
- 6:38were dozens of his followers who were going around being sent out
- 6:42to do those very same things. And this Father, he decides he's
- 6:50going to bring his son to Jesus. But when he finally does, when
- 6:57he finally meets up with them where where they happen to to
- 7:01come in contact with each other, all he finds are some of Jesus
- 7:04apprentices, right? They tell him that Jesus is
- 7:08away. He's gone up the mountain.
- 7:10Remember, this story begins as Peter, James, and John and Jesus
- 7:15are coming back down from the Mount of Transfiguration.
- 7:19We talked about that story from Matthew a few weeks ago, that
- 7:24that moment when Jesus says glory was revealed.
- 7:27And, and so right now, Jesus isn't around, but his disciples,
- 7:33they, they've been doing this. They decide they're going to
- 7:36give it a go. They've, they've been casting
- 7:38out demons, right? So why not this one?
- 7:43But they too, are unable to do anything about it.
- 7:50And this is the scene that Jesus walks up to as he comes down the
- 7:54mountain to rejoin the group, right?
- 7:57The rest of the disciples have gotten into an argument with
- 8:01some of the religious leaders. We're not told exactly what that
- 8:05argument was about, but we can probably presume that it had to
- 8:08do with the source of this boy's affliction and Jesus.
- 8:14He's annoyed, right? He's annoyed when he hears the
- 8:19story, when they tell him, you know, they've they've the father
- 8:23brought the Son and they haven't been able to cast out this
- 8:27demon. He calls out their lack of
- 8:30faith. He commands him to to bring the
- 8:33boy to him. All right, go, let's go right to
- 8:36the source. And so the boy is brought to
- 8:40Jesus. And when he comes into Jesus,
- 8:44his presence, and this demon within him sees Jesus, the
- 8:48Spirit throws the boy to the ground.
- 8:51He's convulsing, he's foaming at the mouth, he's writhing around.
- 8:56And none of this phases Jesus, right He.
- 8:59He's not fazed by this attempted show of power, and he isn't
- 9:05distracted by these physical manifestations within the boy.
- 9:09In fact, Jesus just turns his attention to the Father and
- 9:13begins to have a conversation with him.
- 9:14He asks how long has this been going on?
- 9:19And the Father replied, since he was a little boy, the Spirit
- 9:24often throws him into the fire or into the water, trying to
- 9:28kill him. Have mercy on us and help us if
- 9:33you can. And I think here Jesus is a
- 9:37little offended by that qualifier there at the end,
- 9:41stuck on the end of the Father's request, if you can.
- 9:47And he lets him know, right? Jesus says, what do you mean if
- 9:51I can? Jesus asked.
- 9:55Anything is possible if a person believes, I think the the, the
- 10:02common reading of this verse that it's somehow the father as
- 10:07the one making the request who's supposed to believe, who's
- 10:13supposed to have enough faith. And that's clearly how the
- 10:17Father hears it, right? Because he cries out.
- 10:19I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief, he
- 10:26believes. But if they haven't been able to
- 10:29cast out the demon yet, he must not believe enough.
- 10:39But I've begun to wonder if that's not quite what Jesus
- 10:45meant. Or at least it isn't.
- 10:47The totality of what Jesus meant when he said anything is
- 10:51possible. If a person believes.
- 10:54I wonder if the faith that Jesus is talking about, the faith that
- 10:58makes anything possible, is in this instance not the faith of
- 11:04the Father, but the faith of Jesus.
- 11:09I wonder if Jesus was offended by the phrase, if you can,
- 11:15because he knew that the deliverance of the boy rested on
- 11:20his own faith, which was already a settled matter in his mind.
- 11:27And at that point, the crowd begins to gather around Jesus
- 11:32and the Father and the little boy.
- 11:33They they've kind of noticed that they've gone off to the
- 11:36side somewhere. And so Jesus rebukes the demon.
- 11:39He commands it to come out of the boy and forbids it from ever
- 11:43entering him again. And in what amounts to something
- 11:49like a death spasm, the demon scream convulses the child again
- 11:55and leaves. This has been such a traumatic
- 12:00experience for the boy that is that it appears he's been left
- 12:05dead until Jesus reaches out his hand and helps him stand up,
- 12:15which doesn't actually answer the question of whether he was
- 12:17dead or not. Now I want to make a couple
- 12:23comments here about this topic that, at least in my experience,
- 12:28the majority of the church in America doesn't speak that much
- 12:33about. OK, couple comments on the
- 12:39demonic. First, I think it's worth noting
- 12:44that there is no indication that the child has done anything to
- 12:51be responsible for his demonic oppression.
- 12:55Right. I think it's clear from the text
- 12:57that this boy is the victim. He he's not been a a willing
- 13:02participant in some dark magic or some gross sin which opened
- 13:07the door for his demonization. That's not to say that those
- 13:11other things don't occur. They do, but not every case of
- 13:19demonization as a result of cooperation with the demonic.
- 13:24And here the boys demonization which has afflicted him since he
- 13:28was a small child. It's an expression of the
- 13:33bondage that the world is under. Since the fall, we've been under
- 13:37the dominion of Satan, right? And Scripture even calls him the
- 13:43God of this world. Now, I don't know about you, but
- 13:51I don't like that very much, right?
- 13:54I, I much prefer the idea that the only way we come to be
- 13:58oppressed by an evil spirit is because we've been messing
- 14:01around with things we shouldn't be messing with, right then.
- 14:06I know how to avoid it. That doesn't appear to be the
- 14:10case for this boy, and it wasn't the case for Tim when we were
- 14:15dealing with those things, Pastor John Thompson says we are
- 14:21often handicapped by a Western understanding that things we
- 14:26don't want, don't believe in or don't like can't happen to us.
- 14:35Such is not true, right? Just because we don't like
- 14:41something, just because we don't want something, doesn't mean
- 14:45we're immune from it. That's the first thing.
- 14:53Second thing I want to know in this conversation is that we
- 14:57have to be very careful not to jump to conclusions when we're
- 15:02talking about these things, particularly regarding the
- 15:05source of afflictions in our lives, right?
- 15:10Mental health issues are real things.
- 15:13Genetic conditions are real things.
- 15:17Depression and emotional issues are real things.
- 15:24But they're also not the only thing.
- 15:27Right here in the in the post enlightenment W, we've become so
- 15:31conditioned to look for the scientific answer behind things
- 15:35that we've convinced ourselves that those are the only answers.
- 15:41But friends, things are not always what they seem, and we
- 15:46have to be careful to discern what the source of things is.
- 15:52Is every affliction demonic? No.
- 15:57Is every affliction physical, mental, or emotional?
- 16:02Also, no, right? We have to be careful not to
- 16:05jump to conclusions either way, and we have to be careful not to
- 16:08dismiss either category if our desire is to truly see people
- 16:14healed and set free. Third thing, and I'm trying to
- 16:21move towards closing. Don't worry.
- 16:22Third thing is this idea of demonic possession, right?
- 16:28In ancient Greek, which is the language the New Testament was
- 16:32written in, there are five different words related to the
- 16:36idea of possession or ownership. You know, owning something,
- 16:42which I think is how we often usually think about possession,
- 16:46right? If I possess something, I own
- 16:48it. If a demon possesses something,
- 16:50they have some kind of ownership of that person.
- 16:53But but these five Greek words, which all nuance this idea of
- 16:58possessing something, they don't actually appear in any of the
- 17:06stories of someone being possessed by a demon.
- 17:12We we see the word possession or possessed in in English, but
- 17:18it's not there in the Greek. It's been inserted by
- 17:22translators following the tradition of of the King James
- 17:25Version, one of the earliest English translations.
- 17:31But hearing this story, it doesn't say that the boy was
- 17:33possessed by a demon. It says in a very literal
- 17:38translation he the boy he has a spirit unable to speak or he has
- 17:46a spirit that makes him mute. Right?
- 17:50It doesn't say this boy is possessed by a spirit.
- 17:55My my point is, while it is possible for someone to be so
- 18:01overwhelmingly controlled by a demon that possession would be
- 18:05the right word to use, I think we would do better to to shift
- 18:10our thinking about demonic activity into something that's
- 18:15less all or nothing of a term right?
- 18:19We could use a word like influenced or harassed,
- 18:23tormented, oppressed, afflicted. Or you might have noticed I've
- 18:28used the term demonized right because it it doesn't quantify
- 18:34the level of activity or influence.
- 18:37It leaps out that idea of of ownership.
- 18:43Not every person who's afflicted by a demon is under the
- 18:49ownership of that demonic presence.
- 18:59As I closed, I want to go back to the end of this story before
- 19:05the scene closes and the Jesus and the disciples move into
- 19:09another area. The disciples who are now alone
- 19:14with Jesus, they asked him, why couldn't we cast out that evil
- 19:19spirit? To which Jesus replies, this
- 19:23kind can only be cast out by prayer.
- 19:29Well, what did Jesus mean by that?
- 19:32Or, or even the phrase we might be more familiar with from the
- 19:35King James Version, right. This kind can only be cast out
- 19:38by prayer and fasting. Did anyone else feel like that
- 19:41was missing when that was read this morning?
- 19:43A few of you? Well, again, just like the idea
- 19:48of possession, fasting doesn't appear in most modern
- 19:53translation because it it doesn't appear in the earliest
- 19:57and best Greek manuscripts that have been discovered since the
- 20:01King James Version was translated over 400 years ago.
- 20:06Or there's been a lot of scholarship done and and as they
- 20:09found older and better manuscripts of Mark, scholars
- 20:11are less convinced that the words and fasting were part of
- 20:16the original text. They're added somewhere along
- 20:20the way, but but whether it's prayer and fasting or just
- 20:26prayer, I don't think Jesus meant that.
- 20:28It was simply a matter of saying the right words or performing
- 20:33the right rituals, right? That's not Christianity, that's
- 20:37witchcraft or sorcery. What I think Jesus meant is that
- 20:42there are some demons that can only be cast out by someone
- 20:46living out of a life of prayer, a life in in connection with
- 20:53God. It's not so much about the words
- 20:57prayed in the moment of the confrontation as it is about the
- 21:02life of prayer, right? The battle before the battle, so
- 21:06to speak. It's about allowing your faith
- 21:10to be built up through this habit of prayer, this
- 21:13conversation with God, or prayer and fasting, where our trust in
- 21:19God is deepened. We learn to hear His voice,
- 21:24which can tell us how to approach a specific situation.
- 21:30Now, I've said a lot and you might be sitting here thinking
- 21:37this morning, wow, Scott's really gone off the deep end, or
- 21:45I didn't think this church believed in that kind of stuff.
- 21:50Are we becoming one of those churches?
- 21:55Or maybe you're just thinking, I didn't sign up for this this
- 21:58morning. And frankly, I don't know what
- 22:03to tell you. We've been reading through
- 22:07before Gospels, and I can't read the Gospels without being
- 22:14confronted with the reality that we live in a world at war, that
- 22:20when Jesus came, he was bringing the Kingdom of God in the midst
- 22:24of enemy territory, and his ministry was opposed.
- 22:32And the call of the church is still to bring the Kingdom in
- 22:35enemy territory, and friends, it's still opposed.
- 22:42I think the bigger question we have to ask ourselves is, if
- 22:49we're not seeing the kind of opposition that Jesus
- 22:54experienced when he was taking back enemy territory, what
- 22:59changed? If we're not seeing the kind of
- 23:04opposition we see in the gospels and in the book of Acts
- 23:07everywhere the the gospel message moves into a new area,
- 23:11what changed? Now, listen, I'm not out here
- 23:18looking for spiritual opposition.
- 23:22If I could go through life and not have to deal with the
- 23:25reality of spiritual warfare, I would say thank you, Jesus.
- 23:28Amen. But maybe, friends, we've bought
- 23:34the lie that we can explain away what used to be considered
- 23:39demonic activity with modern science.
- 23:45Maybe we've put blinders on because we don't like the idea
- 23:51of demons at work in the world today, and if we just pretend we
- 23:55can't see them, they don't really exist.
- 24:02But maybe, maybe we're not seeing this kind of opposition
- 24:11because we're not really joining Jesus in the work of setting
- 24:17people free from their appreciate their oppression.
- 24:22Maybe we're not doing enough to be seen as a threat that needs
- 24:25to be opposed because Jesus didn't come just to die so that
- 24:32we could be forgiven and we could go to heaven.
- 24:35Jesus came to set people free so we could experience life
- 24:40abundantly, abundantly. And he calls us into that same
- 24:48work of setting people free today.
- 24:54And while the reality of demonic activity is something we need to
- 24:58be aware of, it's not something that needs to make us afraid,
- 25:05right? Remember what John wrote in his
- 25:08epistle. Greater is the one who is in US
- 25:14than the one who is in the world.
- 25:20We can't ignore it, but we don't need to be afraid of it because
- 25:26Jesus. Remember a few weeks back we
- 25:28talked about Jesus sending out the disciples with authority.
- 25:35God has given his church authority to step out into the
- 25:42darkness, to proclaim the good news of the gospel of Jesus that
- 25:46the Kingdom of God has come near, and to join him in the
- 25:52work of seeing people healed and set free, and to come into a
- 25:59life giving relationship with him.
- 26:05Let's pray together this morning.
- 26:09Jesus, we're so grateful that you are the King of Kings and
- 26:15the Lord of Lords, and that you are greater than the one who is
- 26:21in the world and you live in us. The same spirit that that raised
- 26:31Christ Jesus from the dead now lives in US and can give life to
- 26:38these mortal bodies that we live in that we are Jesus.
- 26:47We're grateful that you brought the Kingdom of God close to us
- 26:54and the Kingdom of God now is in our hearts because the Kingdom
- 26:59is anywhere, Jesus, that you rule and reign and where that
- 27:04rule and reign is accepted. So would you make that a reality
- 27:09in our hearts today and would you empower us and encourage us
- 27:16and embolden us to step out into the world around us, into the
- 27:22enemy territory that's all around us, to proclaim freedom
- 27:28and healing in the name of Jesus?
- 27:36Jesus, we love you and we don't know why you chose to work in
- 27:43the world through people like us, but you did, and so would
- 27:49you make us faithful to do whatever you're asking us to do
- 27:56for the sake of your Kingdom. We love you, we thank you, we
- 28:02pray all this Jesus, in your name and for your sake, Amen.
