- 0:23Speaker 1: Welcome to Opposition Territory here at the Philadelphia Sports Table
- 0:27Speaker 1: podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly sports podcast show
- 0:30Speaker 1: in the world, twelve years strong, and it is great
- 0:34Speaker 1: to have on our Opposition Territory podcast to get into
- 0:37Speaker 1: the New York Giants, a division rival of the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 0:42Speaker 1: From Big Blue View dot com. You know we love
- 0:44Speaker 1: our SB Nation sites. Chris Flumm, how you doing.
- 0:47Speaker 2: My friend, I'm doing well. How are you doing?
- 0:50Speaker 3: I'm doing all right, buddy.
- 0:52Speaker 1: I'm really interested to see where the Giants are going
- 0:56Speaker 1: to continue to go this coming off season again as
- 0:59Speaker 1: a division rival of the Philadelphia Eagles. I think there's
- 1:02Speaker 1: a lot of interesting storylines going on within this Giants
- 1:05Speaker 1: organization and the team in general as well, and I'd
- 1:10Speaker 1: really love to get into some of these discussion points
- 1:13Speaker 1: here with you. But first, can you tell everybody where
- 1:16Speaker 1: they can find you, whether it's on social media, on
- 1:18Speaker 1: the interwebs out there, let folks know where they can
- 1:20Speaker 1: get in touch with you.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Yeah, you can.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Find my work all over Big Blue View, putting up
- 1:25Speaker 2: to scouting reports every single day actually from here on
- 1:28Speaker 2: out until the draft at nice twice a day.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Nice.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Technically I'm on Twitter, but I'm pretty much always on
- 1:34Speaker 2: Blue Sky anymore. There you go at Raptor Mark two.
- 1:38Speaker 2: See right there at Raptor MkII I'm pretty easy to find.
- 1:43Speaker 2: I'm always writing under my own name, so you can
- 1:45Speaker 2: just search Chris flumb Awesome.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Awesome, Yes, great, great writer again over at Big Blue
- 1:49Speaker 1: View dot com. And to get into the storylines that
- 1:54Speaker 1: we've been following with this New York Giants team here, Chris.
- 1:57Speaker 1: A lot of talk about Giants GM Joe Shane and
- 2:01Speaker 1: how intentional or unintentional he has been this off season.
- 2:06Speaker 1: If you talk to certain New York Giants fans, they'll
- 2:09Speaker 1: give you both sides of the equation. Some are saying
- 2:11Speaker 1: that he's making roster moves simply to keep his job.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Some are saying that he's been doing a good job
- 2:17Speaker 1: at helping to build for the future. I'm wondering, what
- 2:21Speaker 1: do you make of this narrative when it comes to
- 2:24Speaker 1: Joe Shane, and also what grade would you give the
- 2:27Speaker 1: Giants off season, the front office so far this year
- 2:31Speaker 1: and why?
- 2:32Speaker 2: Okay, Well, I personally am in the camp that he
- 2:36Speaker 2: has done a good job Okay, this year, I think
- 2:38Speaker 2: he has been very intentional in how he's gone about
- 2:42Speaker 2: his moves in building the team, plugging the various holes
- 2:47Speaker 2: in the roster that were really a problem last year,
- 2:50Speaker 2: last couple of years. And I do think he is
- 2:55Speaker 2: building for the future but also acquiring talent that can
- 2:58Speaker 2: help right now. Think as far as him being on
- 3:03Speaker 2: the hot seat, he and Brian Dable absolutely are.
- 3:07Speaker 1: We're going.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, oh, there's a lot going on there. But
- 3:13Speaker 2: I do believe this is kind of a case of
- 3:15Speaker 2: what's good for the goose is good for the gander.
- 3:19Speaker 2: His best best path to saving his job is to
- 3:23Speaker 2: help the team win, to help the team improve, and
- 3:26Speaker 2: I really feel like he has done that so far
- 3:28Speaker 2: this year. You know, within the within the context of
- 3:31Speaker 2: the draft not being over with yet, I would give
- 3:34Speaker 2: him overall at least a solid B plus what he
- 3:38Speaker 2: has done so far. I will go so far as
- 3:40Speaker 2: to say in a because you know, we don't know
- 3:43Speaker 2: what Russell Wilson is going to do a quarterback, we
- 3:45Speaker 2: don't know how some of these young pieces are. It's
- 3:48Speaker 2: all going to fit together, and obviously the draft is
- 3:51Speaker 2: the keystone to it all.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely it is.
- 3:54Speaker 1: And the real question as we're moving along with the
- 3:58Speaker 1: conversation here is who will the Giants take with the
- 4:02Speaker 1: number three overall pick heading into this NFL Draft? I
- 4:06Speaker 1: mean a quarterback, even though they do have Russell Wilson,
- 4:11Speaker 1: you know, and they do have some depth now at quarterbacks.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Seems to be likely, but this is a team that
- 4:16Speaker 1: has a lot of needs for the future, Chris, especially
- 4:19Speaker 1: from a pass rusher standpoint. As a huge Penn State
- 4:23Speaker 1: fan myself, I've been thinking a lot, boy, if the
- 4:26Speaker 1: Giants end up drafting Abdul Carter, I'm absolutely going to
- 4:30Speaker 1: cry because I have seen this time and time. I
- 4:33Speaker 1: remember Sean Lee getting drafted by the Dallas Cowboys, and
- 4:36Speaker 1: then Michael Parsons getting drafted by the Dallas Cowboys. I
- 4:40Speaker 1: and then Saquon Barkley getting drafted by the New York Giants. Thankfully,
- 4:43Speaker 1: he is now in the Philadelphia Eagles doing a damn
- 4:46Speaker 1: good job. But I just can't take my Penn State
- 4:49Speaker 1: brethren and having them go to other places in the
- 4:52Speaker 1: NFC East. But I do wonder what direction do you
- 4:55Speaker 1: hope the Giants are gonna go with that number three
- 4:59Speaker 1: overall pick in just about a week.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Here, I'm going to preface this by saying that anyone
- 5:04Speaker 2: who says they know what the giants are going to
- 5:06Speaker 2: do is blowing smoke. Right, There's probably about ten people
- 5:12Speaker 2: right now who have even an inkling of what the
- 5:15Speaker 2: giants are going to do, and they're all within the building,
- 5:17Speaker 2: and I don't think they're talking to anybody right now. Right, Yeah,
- 5:22Speaker 2: I think the giants really are one of the true
- 5:24Speaker 2: wild cards in this upcoming draft.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:28Speaker 2: I think when you listen to some of the national
- 5:30Speaker 2: level insiders, everybody is asking them, and they're saying everybody
- 5:35Speaker 2: is asking them, you know, what are the giants going
- 5:36Speaker 2: to do? And I think the ones who are being
- 5:38Speaker 2: most honest always get this kind of momentary look of
- 5:42Speaker 2: panic in their eyes because they don't really know, Right
- 5:47Speaker 2: it was reed tea leaves and it's other people's tea,
- 5:50Speaker 2: you know. It's they're not really hearing anything from inside
- 5:53Speaker 2: the building. So I'm just going to preface it with that.
- 5:59Speaker 2: I think that Abdul Carter will be the pick, provided
- 6:03Speaker 2: the Browns. Don't sorry, but if it makes you feel better,
- 6:11Speaker 2: My sister went to Penn State.
- 6:12Speaker 3: So yeah, all right, there we go.
- 6:14Speaker 2: There's at least that soft spot there, and I felt
- 6:19Speaker 2: the exact same way about Sean Lee and Michael Parsons. Yeah, yeah,
- 6:22Speaker 2: that was those were rough. But provided the Browns don't
- 6:27Speaker 2: take Carter, I think the Giants do now. There have
- 6:32Speaker 2: been has been a notion creeping up lately that maybe
- 6:36Speaker 2: the Giants could trade down a little bit. Carter did
- 6:41Speaker 2: have all of a sudden, a late workout with the
- 6:43Speaker 2: New England Patriots, and he is going to be a
- 6:49Speaker 2: top three pick, or almost certainly going to be a
- 6:51Speaker 2: top three pick. So I don't know if that is
- 6:56Speaker 2: a just in case that, say the Giants do take
- 6:59Speaker 2: a quarterback at three. There have been those conversations between
- 7:03Speaker 2: the Giants and the Patriots in the past. Maybe they
- 7:06Speaker 2: have resumed or kept going really and it's possible that
- 7:12Speaker 2: the Patriots really do covet Obdull Carter enough that they
- 7:16Speaker 2: want to move up and get him, or perhaps the
- 7:20Speaker 2: Giants are actually looking at a quarterback at third. Overall,
- 7:24Speaker 2: John Marra did basically lay down a mandate that the
- 7:27Speaker 2: Giants get a quarterback of the future, a future franchise quarterback,
- 7:32Speaker 2: and they might not want to take a chance that
- 7:34Speaker 2: the Saints or the Steelers or the Jets or whoever
- 7:38Speaker 2: else might take one and just take the guy they're
- 7:43Speaker 2: looking at. Now, whoever that is, we can talk about that,
- 7:46Speaker 2: but at least at third overall. Right now, if everything
- 7:51Speaker 2: goes the way we think it will, it looks like
- 7:56Speaker 2: it'll be Abdul Carter or Travis Hunter, but it seems
- 8:01Speaker 2: like the Browns are kind of focusing in on him.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Yeah, this number three overall pick for the Giants is
- 8:08Speaker 1: going to be huge, or even if they do drop
- 8:11Speaker 1: back and gain some more assets for the future, this
- 8:14Speaker 1: is a huge draft for this Giants team and the
- 8:17Speaker 1: organization overall. I mean, there's a lot of talent that
- 8:21Speaker 1: the Giants may be able to draft in a little
- 8:24Speaker 1: over the week with the.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Picks that they do have.
- 8:27Speaker 1: So as we were just talking about the Day one pick,
- 8:30Speaker 1: you know, that first round pick, what they're going to
- 8:32Speaker 1: do with it, Chris, I'm wondering what positions do you
- 8:35Speaker 1: think they'll be honing in on during Day two when
- 8:39Speaker 1: they have one second round pick and I believe two
- 8:42Speaker 1: third round picks if I'm not mistaken, What do you
- 8:45Speaker 1: think they're going to be doing on Day two?
- 8:47Speaker 2: I think that will depend on what happens at the
- 8:50Speaker 2: second half of the first round, because right now, the
- 8:53Speaker 2: thinking is that the Giants very well could be looking
- 8:56Speaker 2: at jumping back into the first round, maybe the team
- 9:00Speaker 2: like Atlanta or the Minnesota Vikings, who both of those
- 9:04Speaker 2: two teams, they do not have many picks, and the
- 9:06Speaker 2: Giants do have amo to move back up. That thirty
- 9:09Speaker 2: fourth overall pick is valuable. They've got the two third
- 9:13Speaker 2: round picks, the one right at the top of the
- 9:15Speaker 2: third round, and then the compensatory pick that they got
- 9:19Speaker 2: for letting Xavier McKinnon Saquon Barkley go in free agency,
- 9:24Speaker 2: So they do have assets to move around if they
- 9:29Speaker 2: so choose. Yeah, I think a lot of what we
- 9:34Speaker 2: have been hearing and talking about is that they very
- 9:36Speaker 2: well could take one of those two blue chip guys
- 9:39Speaker 2: in the first round and then jump back in for
- 9:42Speaker 2: a quarterback at developmental quarterback, maybe Jackson Dart, maybe Jalen Milroe.
- 9:46Speaker 1: I was thinking Jalen Milroe actually, yeah, because I think
- 9:48Speaker 1: Jalen Milroe is very very under the radar coming into this,
- 9:52Speaker 1: coming into this draft.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Yeah, and with the two veteran quarterbacks they signed, they
- 9:57Speaker 2: would have that extra year to develop up a guy
- 10:00Speaker 2: like that and have him take over in twenty six.
- 10:03Speaker 2: But at least as far as positions they could look
- 10:05Speaker 2: at on the second round, depending on how many second
- 10:09Speaker 2: round picks they have the offensive and defensive lines, and
- 10:14Speaker 2: I would say either a guard tackle prospect, which is
- 10:19Speaker 2: most of the tackle prospects in this year's draft, a
- 10:21Speaker 2: lot of them I think are going to be sliding
- 10:23Speaker 2: inside to guard this year, or a defensive tackle to
- 10:27Speaker 2: play next to Dexter Lawrence, because this year's defensive tackle
- 10:31Speaker 2: class is absurd. It is just ridiculously deep and talented,
- 10:37Speaker 2: and the Giants really could still always use talent along
- 10:41Speaker 2: their offensive line. They were actually not bad given the
- 10:45Speaker 2: age of some of their guys in the history. I
- 10:48Speaker 2: definitely expect them to continue to add to the line
- 10:51Speaker 2: on Day two if they can. And also again the
- 10:53Speaker 2: defensive tackle, I do like what a lot of their
- 10:57Speaker 2: depth players did. I'm in an extreme minority in the
- 11:02Speaker 2: in the Giants sphere, but I do like what a
- 11:04Speaker 2: lot of those deaf guys did after Dexh Lawrence went down.
- 11:08Speaker 3: Yeah, but there there is.
- 11:12Speaker 2: There is a pretty big difference between Dexter Lawrence and
- 11:15Speaker 2: Jordan Riley DJ Davidson those guys, So getting somebody else
- 11:19Speaker 2: to run with big decks Yeah, Eagles fans, Giants fans,
- 11:23Speaker 2: we all know what a good defensive line can do.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Absolutely absolutely, It's gonna be interesting to see what they
- 11:28Speaker 1: do on Day two for sure. And again, folks, we're
- 11:32Speaker 1: talking to Chris Flumm from Big Blue View dot Com.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Great great content over there. You know, we love our
- 11:38Speaker 1: SB Nation sites. And as we're moving along with a
- 11:40Speaker 1: conversation here, Chris, you know, even after the draft, you
- 11:44Speaker 1: know some of these players they're not gonna be starters.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Of course, right out of the gate. We know this
- 11:48Speaker 1: just for every NFL team. So with that being said,
- 11:52Speaker 1: here's a two part question for you about this Giants
- 11:55Speaker 1: team heading into the summer and this upcoming season. The
- 11:58Speaker 1: first being what is the biggest strength on this Giants
- 12:02Speaker 1: team heading into this season? Again, of course the draft
- 12:06Speaker 1: has not happened yet, but what is your diagnosis at
- 12:10Speaker 1: this point of what the biggest strength is of this
- 12:12Speaker 1: team heading into this season.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Okay, even though I just got done talking about them
- 12:17Speaker 2: needing to add more defensive linemen, I would still say
- 12:20Speaker 2: the defensive line is the greatest strength.
- 12:22Speaker 3: Okay, there you go, yep.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Yeah, and I depending on how things go with Paulsen
- 12:27Speaker 2: and Devo and Javon Holland. I would spin that off
- 12:31Speaker 2: to the defense as a whole. I think the Giants
- 12:33Speaker 2: defense's biggest problem is that the offense has been an
- 12:36Speaker 2: absolute albatross around its now. Just you cannot play very
- 12:41Speaker 2: good defense if you're trying to haul around the thirtieth
- 12:44Speaker 2: ranked offense for a couple of years. But yeah, Brandon Burns,
- 12:49Speaker 2: Dexter Lawrence, Kevon Thibadeau, that's a solid foundation for a defense.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Dexter Lawrence is in the conversation for best defensive tackle
- 13:02Speaker 2: in the NFL. And that's with respect to guys like
- 13:05Speaker 2: Chris Jones, with the Philly guys, with the guys out
- 13:10Speaker 2: in Los Angeles. You know he is right there. And
- 13:16Speaker 2: Brandon Burns and Capon Thibodeau. I don't know if they
- 13:19Speaker 2: get quite as much respect Tibbs and especially for how
- 13:25Speaker 2: good and disruptive they can be.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Ye.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Yeah, Brandon Burns was I believe, top five in ESPN's
- 13:31Speaker 2: pass rush win rate. Thibodeau was in the top fifteen.
- 13:35Speaker 2: And I don't know, if you're familiar with Brandon Thorne,
- 13:38Speaker 2: he is not as I would say, He's probably one
- 13:42Speaker 2: of the best, if not the best, independent defensive line
- 13:45Speaker 2: analysts out there, and he has a thing he does
- 13:48Speaker 2: where he breaks down trench play for every game every week,
- 13:53Speaker 2: and he grades pass rushers and he grades them on
- 13:57Speaker 2: you out a coverage sack, low quality sack, or a
- 14:00Speaker 2: high quality sack or a rare high quality sack and
- 14:04Speaker 2: their rate of producing those over their pastures snaps. The
- 14:09Speaker 2: Giants were the only team to have three players Burns, Thibodeaux,
- 14:13Speaker 2: and Lawrence in his top thirty for high quality sack,
- 14:19Speaker 2: and Thibodeau was I believe top five in rare and
- 14:25Speaker 2: high quality sack Arry. So that's winning pass rushes in
- 14:29Speaker 2: less than two and a half seconds against a good tackle.
- 14:33Speaker 2: So it's not waiting for the coverage to hold up
- 14:37Speaker 2: and eventually working your way there. It's just like winning
- 14:39Speaker 2: it on his own. So I really think the Giants'
- 14:42Speaker 2: biggest problems on the defensive side of the ball is
- 14:45Speaker 2: the fact that their offense does not force the opposing
- 14:48Speaker 2: offense to throw. And I think having those guys there
- 14:53Speaker 2: is a solid foundation. And if Paul's in a debo
- 14:56Speaker 2: and Javon Holland pan out, they've got Deane Banks, who
- 15:01Speaker 2: he has his own issues. He needs to work out,
- 15:03Speaker 2: particularly at the catch point. But the athletic traits are
- 15:07Speaker 2: right there. Drew Phillips was fantastic in the slot last year,
- 15:12Speaker 2: rookie out of Kentucky. Tyler Newban rookie safety out of Minnesota,
- 15:16Speaker 2: he was very good as well. So they've got a
- 15:21Speaker 2: really young secondary, but it could be a very good secondary.
- 15:26Speaker 2: But again, it's contingent on the offense, which if you
- 15:29Speaker 2: want the flip that over to the weekend, Yeah, let's let's.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Do the one eighty here and let's go with biggest
- 15:35Speaker 1: weakness heading into the twenty seas.
- 15:39Speaker 2: I would say the offense just in general, but that
- 15:42Speaker 2: is really contingent on quarterback to play. Yeah, there's only
- 15:46Speaker 2: so much you can do with Drew Locke and Tommy DeVito,
- 15:51Speaker 2: and you know, really nothing against Daniel Jones, but he
- 15:56Speaker 2: was a limited quarterback who limited the offense in ways.
- 16:01Speaker 2: So I the offense has been the Giant's weakness for
- 16:06Speaker 2: years now, really, going back to I would say probably
- 16:09Speaker 2: twenty sixteen.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Really it's a while. So we're gonna have nine years, yes, yeah.
- 16:16Speaker 2: And even then maybe even twenty fifteen. Yeah, it's been
- 16:19Speaker 2: a long time, and it comes down to that quarterback position.
- 16:23Speaker 2: If Russell Wilson, if he can be Russ and Russ
- 16:26Speaker 2: can cook, Malik neighbors is he has the potential to
- 16:32Speaker 2: be special Tyrone Tracy is a really good running back.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Another one of your Penn State guys, Theo Johnson. He
- 16:39Speaker 2: is an athletic freak. He shows some real upside. Like
- 16:42Speaker 2: they've got They've got potential at the skill positions. It's
- 16:47Speaker 2: just that offensive line depth and that quarterback play has
- 16:51Speaker 2: to get where they need it to be.
- 16:53Speaker 3: Yep, yep, absolutely all right.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Well, as we're moving along here, Chris, I was hoping
- 16:58Speaker 1: we could really do some reflection on the Giants free
- 17:03Speaker 1: agents that they brought in during this offseason as well, again,
- 17:06Speaker 1: two new quarterbacks. They've added talent to the offensive line,
- 17:10Speaker 1: defensive backfield as well.
- 17:13Speaker 3: What did you like and also what did you.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Not like about the Giants moves in free agency? I mean,
- 17:19Speaker 1: you did talk about Joe Shane thinking he's doing a
- 17:22Speaker 1: pretty productive job for this organization for the team thus
- 17:25Speaker 1: far this season. But would you like and not like
- 17:28Speaker 1: too too much in terms of free agency?
- 17:31Speaker 2: Yeah, there wasn't much I really didn't like. Yeah, if
- 17:35Speaker 2: they had gone the Aaron Rodgers route. That would have
- 17:38Speaker 2: been one Like I guess you know I that was
- 17:44Speaker 2: the one move I really did not want them to make.
- 17:47Speaker 2: I wouldn't fine if they took a flyer on Justin Fields.
- 17:51Speaker 2: I actually was fine if they had gone into twenty
- 17:53Speaker 2: twenty five with Jamis Winston as their potential bridge quarterback. Yeah,
- 18:00Speaker 2: I am. I'm not going to say they fixed it
- 18:03Speaker 2: with Russell Wilson because he is obviously on the downside
- 18:07Speaker 2: of his career. We saw what happen at the end
- 18:10Speaker 2: of the year with Pittsburgh, but yeah, with maybe a
- 18:17Speaker 2: full off season, him not having to deal with an
- 18:21Speaker 2: injury and training camp and all that, like getting all
- 18:23Speaker 2: of those reps, we'll see what happens there. Overall, I
- 18:27Speaker 2: think it was those were good, solid moves. You know,
- 18:31Speaker 2: James Winston at the very least will be entertaining, which
- 18:34Speaker 2: given the way the Giants offense has looked, we were
- 18:37Speaker 2: just talking about it entertaining, isn't that is It's.
- 18:41Speaker 3: A low bar, but entertainment.
- 18:43Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's a low bar, but be happy to
- 18:47Speaker 2: clear it. Right. As far as the the other moves
- 18:51Speaker 2: like that, those two young dbs a debo, a debo
- 18:55Speaker 2: or and Holland. I like what those guys bring. Yeah,
- 18:59Speaker 2: they're gamblers, which that's kind of okay with me because
- 19:06Speaker 2: the upside of potentially producing turnovers is really great and
- 19:12Speaker 2: that's something the Giants haven't been very good at, particularly
- 19:15Speaker 2: last year. Like I don't think they had their first
- 19:20Speaker 2: or now they had an interception to start the year.
- 19:23Speaker 2: They didn't have a defensive back make an interception until oh,
- 19:28Speaker 2: I don't think it was until after the bye week
- 19:30Speaker 2: last year. It was getting embarrassing. And that's saying something
- 19:35Speaker 2: considering how their season went last year, that their dbs
- 19:38Speaker 2: just couldn't get their hands on the football.
- 19:41Speaker 3: So I think the.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Potential upside of having a couple of gamblers in the
- 19:48Speaker 2: defensive backfield is definitely worth it. And also adding like
- 19:53Speaker 2: a Chauncey Golston taking a guy away from the Cowboys,
- 19:57Speaker 2: I think we can all agree that's a positive move.
- 20:00Speaker 3: Oh yeah, there you go. As soon as he likes
- 20:01Speaker 3: that one, Yes, and.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he could be I don't want to
- 20:08Speaker 2: say an upgrade over Azizo Jialari one of the newest Eagles.
- 20:11Speaker 2: We go down ninety five there, yep, but I think
- 20:17Speaker 2: he could at least be a side grade who presents
- 20:22Speaker 2: more upside and run defense, which has kind of been
- 20:24Speaker 2: a problem for the Giants on the edge there, So
- 20:28Speaker 2: that I think helps them getting like Stone foresight a
- 20:30Speaker 2: couple of the other offensive linemen the Giants brought in
- 20:34Speaker 2: again help improve the competition on the right side and
- 20:38Speaker 2: maybe help out the depth which has been a real
- 20:41Speaker 2: problem for them. Yeah, I'd love to see Joshua Zudu,
- 20:46Speaker 2: Giants third round pick in twenty twenty two. He was
- 20:49Speaker 2: supposed to be a guard. He is always supposed to
- 20:50Speaker 2: be a guard, and anytime we see him, he's playing tackle,
- 20:54Speaker 2: which is not his position at all. He did it
- 20:57Speaker 2: in college at North Carolina, but he he is not
- 21:00Speaker 2: an NFL tackle. So hopefully some of these depth players
- 21:04Speaker 2: that Joshane has brought in will kind of allow guys
- 21:08Speaker 2: to play their more natural positions, which again that would
- 21:11Speaker 2: be a just an absolute positive for this team.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Yes, I definitely hear what you're saying, and as an
- 21:21Speaker 1: Eagles fan, I'm hoping it doesn't come to fruiation. But
- 21:25Speaker 1: in terms of just being a football lover overall, again,
- 21:29Speaker 1: another interesting storyline for sure with this Giants team, just
- 21:32Speaker 1: in terms of how their free agents are going to
- 21:34Speaker 1: end up impacting the team this season. So again, folks
- 21:38Speaker 1: talking to Chris Flum from Big Blue View dot Com.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Check out everything they have going on over there with
- 21:44Speaker 1: regard to the New York Giants and some NFL writing
- 21:47Speaker 1: as well. But to close us out here, Chris, it
- 21:51Speaker 1: seems like this coming season is going to be a
- 21:54Speaker 1: do or die year for head coach Brian Dable, and frankly,
- 21:57Speaker 1: I'm surprised he was able to keep his job after
- 21:59Speaker 1: this past season, just given what the NFL is in
- 22:02Speaker 1: terms of how they get rid of and hire coaches
- 22:04Speaker 1: at such a quick pace year after year. So two
- 22:08Speaker 1: part question for you here, why do you think the
- 22:10Speaker 1: front office kept him on board? And what does Brian
- 22:12Speaker 1: Dable need to do this season for the Giants to
- 22:16Speaker 1: keep him on board as the head coach long term?
- 22:18Speaker 2: Yeah? I think the primary reason why not even the
- 22:23Speaker 2: front off John Marra kept Brian day Ball and Joe
- 22:26Speaker 2: Shane around is because he just didn't want to have
- 22:30Speaker 2: that same turnover. Yeah, to have Ben McAdoo for two
- 22:35Speaker 2: years and then Pat Shermer for two years, and then
- 22:38Speaker 2: Joe Judge for two years and then have to get
- 22:43Speaker 2: rid of Joe Shane and Brian Daball after three years.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Like the Giants crave stability. He desperately wants to get
- 22:50Speaker 2: back to what they had with Tom Kaughlin and Jerry Reese,
- 22:54Speaker 2: where the results may not have been there every single year,
- 22:58Speaker 2: but they were always at least least competitive, and they
- 23:02Speaker 2: weren't constantly turning over and constantly changing schemes, and they
- 23:07Speaker 2: were able to build and establish like a system. That's
- 23:11Speaker 2: something that Giants haven't had since really since Tom Qaughlin
- 23:15Speaker 2: was fired. Yeah, you know, way back after twenty fifteen.
- 23:20Speaker 2: So that I think is why Brian Dable still has
- 23:23Speaker 2: his job. I honestly think looking at the landscape of
- 23:32Speaker 2: especially the NFL Draft this year, I don't think this
- 23:35Speaker 2: is a bad quarterback draft, but I do believe that
- 23:39Speaker 2: it's an unusual one and there's a lot more risk
- 23:43Speaker 2: than as usual. Yes, yeah, I think Jackson dart or
- 23:49Speaker 2: Jalen Milroe could be really good quarterbacks at the NFL level,
- 23:54Speaker 2: but there's a pretty big discrepancy between the ceiling and
- 23:58Speaker 2: the floor with them, And to a certain extent, I
- 24:02Speaker 2: think firing Shane and Daball could have been a mercy
- 24:07Speaker 2: after last year. Yeah, like they could have talked about it,
- 24:09Speaker 2: you know, gone into interviews with other teams and talked about, hey,
- 24:12Speaker 2: we you know, we weren't thrilled with being tied to
- 24:16Speaker 2: Daniel Jones. We did it because we had to. But look,
- 24:19Speaker 2: we put that escape patch in his contract, and you know, John,
- 24:24Speaker 2: he just didn't want to give us the extra time. Yeah,
- 24:29Speaker 2: but now they're kind of stuck with this class. I
- 24:34Speaker 2: hate to say it. Unfortunately, they beat the Indianapolis Colts
- 24:37Speaker 2: and lost the right to draft cam Ward, which I'm
- 24:41Speaker 2: sure Eagles fans are thrilled with.
- 24:43Speaker 3: I'm happy with that, yes, yeah, yeah.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Forcing them to go through with this and this year
- 24:54Speaker 2: and trying to save their jobs was almost the cruelest
- 24:59Speaker 2: move possible potentially now as far as what they need
- 25:04Speaker 2: to do to save their jobs and day ball in particular,
- 25:08Speaker 2: you hear a lot about how the Giants have to win,
- 25:10Speaker 2: and that is part of it. I don't know that
- 25:13Speaker 2: getting to a winning record, especially since you know we've
- 25:17Speaker 2: got the seventeen game season, you know, five hundred records
- 25:20Speaker 2: straight out unless there's a tie, but that'd be weird. Yeah.
- 25:24Speaker 2: I do think getting to like a six win season,
- 25:27Speaker 2: but having the losses be competitive. Yeah, if the Giants
- 25:32Speaker 2: can make the Eagles and the Commanders work for it,
- 25:36Speaker 2: beat the Cowboys and make say the forty nine Ers
- 25:42Speaker 2: and you know, the playing the AFC West, make those
- 25:47Speaker 2: teams work for it and maybe pull out some wins
- 25:51Speaker 2: against good competition. That I think could or maybe even
- 25:57Speaker 2: would buy day Ball at least another year, maybe even two.
- 26:02Speaker 2: The other part of it, I think is having those
- 26:04Speaker 2: young guys take that step forward, have the free agent
- 26:08Speaker 2: additions hit, have the secondary play up to its potential,
- 26:13Speaker 2: Maybe have Tyrone Tracy take another step forward, get something
- 26:17Speaker 2: out of Jalen Hyatt at wide receiver that would be fantastic,
- 26:20Speaker 2: right yep it Maybe even have Evan Neil look like
- 26:26Speaker 2: a consistently competent starting offensive lineman. Yeah, all of that together,
- 26:31Speaker 2: I think would definitely go a long way to making
- 26:34Speaker 2: John Mara happy. I think more than anything, he just
- 26:37Speaker 2: wants to see the team take a step in the
- 26:40Speaker 2: right direction and start looking like a team that can
- 26:43Speaker 2: be building for the next five years.
- 26:45Speaker 1: Yeah, it is really going to be interesting to see
- 26:48Speaker 1: where this Giants team goes here in twenty twenty five.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Of course, with the draft next week and then the season,
- 26:54Speaker 1: we got training camp. I feel like that's going to
- 26:55Speaker 1: be here before we know it. But it's been a
- 26:59Speaker 1: great conversation, a great discussion with you, Chris, and real quick.
