The Courrières Mine Disaster
In this episode of Compact Disasters, we go underground in northern France to examine the Courrières Mine Disaster, the 1906 coal mine explosion that killed 1,099 people and became one of Europe's worst industrial tragedies. We look at the dangerous conditions inside the mine, the explosion that tore through the galleries, the rescue efforts that sparked public anger, and the extraordinary survivors who emerged after nearly three weeks in darkness.
