- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Hola, welcome to Mooney's Mythic Podcast.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Well, this is the lost pod.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: This is not the lost pod.
- 0:08This is a re-recording of the pod for anyone who was listening
- 0:15to the last episode.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: It just cut off after about 15 minutes.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: And in true Mooney style, I recorded it.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: I uploaded it.
- 0:27Then I did have a page of notes,
- 0:29which I put on the fire and said thank you to the ideas.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Got no idea really what I said at the end of that pod.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: But I do know that I was halfway through a story.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: And of course,
- 0:44I'm going to finish the story for you and share with you
- 0:47whatever that has evoked.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: So if you are just jumping into this pod for the first time,
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: go back to the beginning of the story and hear about it.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Or if you're just like,
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: I haven't got time for that,
- 1:02then all you need to know is that there is a woman living in an
- 1:07igloo who is
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: nothing but bone.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: She's getting her needs met.
- 1:13She's asking for what she wants at night and she's waking up in
- 1:17the morning and
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: it's arrived for her.
- 1:19She's getting her needs met in some magical way that the story
- 1:22doesn't tell you about.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: And then one day there are some seal hunters,
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: two brothers,
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: and they're coming along and she looks at them.
- 1:32She hasn't seen human for such a long time and the thirst in
- 1:37her to connect with
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: them is so huge and she
- 1:40runs towards them and there she is clacking and chlorine and
- 1:43banging their mouth
- 1:44wide open and the pits of where her eyeballs were just just
- 1:49these holes looking at
- 1:51them and her long bony fingers reaching out to try and touch
- 1:56them and they freak
- 1:57out and they run away and she's sad she goes back to her home
- 2:03and they go back to
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: their home and they live with their old father
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: The father that doesn't hunt anymore.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: The father that stays at home.
- 2:16The father that's been told,
- 2:17I'll do that for you,
- 2:17I'll do that for you,
- 2:18I'll do that for you.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: The father who feels at the end of his life,
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: everything is shutting down,
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: his world is getting smaller and smaller.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: And his sons tell him, this woman that they've seen, and he says to them,
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Well, I haven't got anything to worry about.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: I'm at the end of my life.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: I'm going to go and take a look at this.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: He's stirred.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: And so he gets up that next morning.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: And he walks to where his sons have told him that the woman lives.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: And she's there sitting at the mouth of her igloo.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: And when she sees him, she walks inside.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: And he follows her.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: And they spend the night together.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: And in the morning she asks him.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: If he will make her a drum.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: A small drum.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: And with hands that have crafted throughout his life.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: He begins the process of making a drum.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: Tanning and skinning and woodwork and sinew.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: He makes her a tiny little drum.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: And she starts to play this little drum.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: She turns off all the lights in the igloo.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: So it's dark.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Black dark.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Magic dark.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: And she starts to play.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: Do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: She starts to sing too.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: Sounds really.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: And she can feel in her hands that her drum is beginning to grow.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: Getting bigger.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: She dances and the drum flows and the beat flows through her.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: And the man says nothing, he's there in silent witness.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: Through the night she drums.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Through the night she sings, through the night she dances.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: And then the birds sing for the morning and the light begins to appear.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: And the man looks upon her and he sees a woman,
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: fleshed out,
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: full eyes,
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: blood pumping and racing around her body,
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: heart and lungs and liver.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: She's drummed it all back.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: She's drummed it all back in the night.
- 5:23She's drummed herself back with his drum and her witnessing and
- 5:27her song and her
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: prayer and her dance.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: And her voice.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: She's drummed back her fingernails.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: And she's drummed back her breasts.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: She's drummed back the very skin around elbow and shoulder.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: She's drummed back knees and toes.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: She's drummed back sweat and scent.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: She's drummed back hair in all the places.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: And there's a quiet between them.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: A winter quiet.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: So much life has been born.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: There's no words yet for what has occurred.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: And when the night comes, they don't light the candles or the oil lamps.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: She drums again.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: His voice joins in.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: He begins to sing.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: At some point he feels himself swaying.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: And that sway becomes a movement and that movement becomes a dance.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: He dances.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: In his own way.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: He sounds and he dances through the night longing comes out of him.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Grief, fear, joy.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: He dances, he sways, he moves it all.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: And then the day comes and he's young, virile, alive, light in his eyes.
- 7:45ready to live again ready to open out into the world again and
- 7:53hand in hand they
- 7:54continue their life together something like that the story went
- 8:03it felt good to
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: drum then um
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: Those of you that know me know that I have dyspraxia,
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: so it's a very difficult thing to me to hold a rhythm.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: But it felt good to drum and I wonder what we can drum back.
- 8:20I wonder with our drums what we can call back with just with
- 8:24hitting a skin
- 8:27stretched across something in the way that our ancestors have
- 8:30done thousands of
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: times for thousands of years.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, what resonance can resound behind us?
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: And I know that that,
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: because I told you in my last pod that I'm making a salmon skin drum.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: I haven't got the salmon skin.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but I'm just preparing to tan it.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: And when I was telling my story wintering group,
- 9:00obviously everything that happens in our story wintering group
- 9:03is confidential.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: It's a confidential circle for us to share our winter dreaming.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: But I think I can tell you this bit.
- 9:13So I'm telling my story wintering circle that I'm about to make
- 9:17a salmon skin drum.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: Another woman is thinking about it too.
- 9:22And then someone else says,
- 9:23oh,
- 9:24you know,
- 9:24like about how the orcas are wearing salmons as hats.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: They're whales, orcas.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: And I didn't know this.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: And so,
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: about 30 years ago,
- 9:38orcas started to go around in their pods with big salmons
- 9:42across their heads.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: And they seem to be larking about.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: And this wasn't just in one pod.
- 9:46This seemed to be like a craze that swept through orcas from
- 9:51pod to pod to pod to
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: pod all over the seas.
- 9:56And yeah,
- 9:56they seem to be larking around with these salmons on their heads.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: And then it stopped.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: And then this year it started again.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: Orcas have been seen with salmons on their heads again.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: And it's suspected that that is because there's a lot of salmon.
- 10:14Maybe there was a scarcity of salmon and you couldn't play with
- 10:18it or celebrate with it.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: There wasn't enough.
- 10:20But this year there's more salmon than ever and so they can
- 10:23play again and
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: Apparently orcas do play.
- 10:27They've been seen pushing seaweed down to the bottom of the sea
- 10:31and then watching
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: as it slowly rises up again.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: And so someone told us about that and sent us an article about it.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: And then another woman said,
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: well,
- 10:42do you know that there are only three mammals that go through
- 10:45the menopause?
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: And that's the orca and the elephant and the human woman.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: And we fell into silence thinking about this,
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: thinking about the association I was,
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: thinking,
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: well,
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: what do I have in common with elephant and orca?
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: And what a proud lineage that is, proud to be in that lineup.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: And then someone said, we must still have a lot to offer.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: And I really feel that for all of you
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: who are listening to remember that wherever we are in our lives,
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: we've still got a lot to offer.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: And when we feel the winter sun on us, to remember that.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: You know that word, apricity?
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: It's the warmth of the sun in wintertime.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: And I believe that it can really warm places
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: in a different way.
- 11:50It can really warm places that have found it hard to be warmed
- 11:54by the summer sun.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: It can go into a deeper, deeper place.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: So let's get out there into this nature that loves us.
- 12:06uh i'm doing some storytelling next thursday thursday at the
- 12:11goddess house at seven
- 12:12o'clock for a half seven start with the amazing sophie
- 12:16pullinger she's a sound
- 12:18healer so she's going to bring gongs and chimes and crystal
- 12:22bowls and the first
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: half will be a story journey it'll be a story with music
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: And the second half, we'll do a journey.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: We'll do a kind of real deep winter sort of sound led journey with words.
- 12:38I mean,
- 12:39if you're thinking,
- 12:40I don't know what any of that means,
- 12:42come along.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: Definitely come along and find out.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: And then I'm doing a wassail the week after.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: I hope you're coming.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: It is at the New Shoe Museum in Streets.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: And a wassail,
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: for those of you that aren't from Somerset or don't know,
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: is a gentle,
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: charming,
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: celebration,
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: awakening,
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: blessing on the apple trees.
- 13:09It's an ancient tradition where people would gather around the
- 13:13apple trees and do
- 13:14all kinds of different things to celebrate their lives and to
- 13:18ask for a good harvest.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: So that's going to be going on there.
- 13:25And all this sort of movement to being outside is making me
- 13:30think about the retreat
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: that I'm running at the end of February at the Chalice Well Gardens.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: Have you been to the Chalicewell Gardens in Glastonbury?
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: It's where the red spring,
- 13:43where the red water runs from the Tor down and it's been kept
- 13:49in a very pure and
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: sacred way.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: It's really protected there.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: And I ran a group there last year, a residency for three nights.
- 14:03And the joy of being in the retreat house in the Chalicewell
- 14:08Gardens is that you
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: can have the gardens to yourself at night.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: So we created ritual and ceremony and rites of passage together.
- 14:16in those gardens at night and I really felt like people have
- 14:20been doing that for
- 14:22for a long long long time I really felt part of uh kind of
- 14:28sacred pilgrims holy
- 14:29pilgrims that come to Glastonbury to do that and we're going to
- 14:33use the story of
- 14:34Tatterhood to kind of open up the doors and Tatterhood's a
- 14:37really wild story so I
- 14:38feel like there's going to be something about integrating our
- 14:42wild or opening up to
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: our wild
- 14:45we'll see anyway I've got four places left so if you're up for
- 14:48it um get in touch
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: with me I would love to have you there
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: Oh,
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: thanks to Jeff and Andrea and Steph,
- 14:58who were the first people that got in touch to say that the
- 15:02recording was shonky.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: Really, really grateful.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: And yeah, just lovely to know who's listening, when you're listening.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: So if you're listening, send me a message.
- 15:13If you've got anything to say,
- 15:16any comment or advice or support or criticism.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: I love to hear it.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: If you think,
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: oh,
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: she sounds like she needs a coffee or a dandelion coffee,
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: obviously,
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: because I've stopped the caffeine malarkey,
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: then you can go onto my Substack page,
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: which is probably Mooney's mythic podcast.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: I'll have to check.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: And you can donate something there to support my thrival in this life.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: See you next week.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: Hear you next week.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: I really,
- 15:59really hope you get out there and feel the wind on your cheeks
- 16:02and that you're not
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: too cold and that you're never too far from a friend.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: Lots of love.
