Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / ITB Week 4 Postgame Show: Eagles Blow Chance To Put Rams Away, Suffer Consequence In Loss
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, everybody.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Welcome to the Inside the Birds postgame show. I'm Jeff Mosher.
- 0:13Speaker 2: I'm here, of course, with Adam Kaplan. It is a
- 0:16Speaker 2: week four letdown for the Eagles, man. So many injuries
- 0:19Speaker 2: pile up. They play the Rams. They lose more players
- 0:23Speaker 2: in the game, Adam, and they fall 24-20, despite the
- 0:27Speaker 2: fact that they held a double-digit lead, a 20-10 lead
- 0:30Speaker 2: in the second half. And we see the Rams go
- 0:33Speaker 2: down the field and score two touchdowns in the fourth
- 0:35Speaker 2: quarter to edge it out. Let's just get this over with, Adam, because...
- 0:39Speaker 2: we're recording this like within, I don't know, a half
- 0:42Speaker 2: hour before the end of the game.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Still, it's fresh. I'm getting text messages after the game.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Getting text message. We're getting social media tweets about it.
- 0:50Speaker 2: The decision of Nick Sirianni on fourth and two to
- 0:54Speaker 2: go for the touchdown to go up 17 points there
- 0:57Speaker 2: instead of taking the field goal, go for three is
- 1:00Speaker 2: the absolute correct decision. And everything the Rams did validated
- 1:03Speaker 2: it because he was trying to end the game at 17. Now,
- 1:07Speaker 2: if you go up, 13 points there because you took
- 1:10Speaker 2: the field goal, then you just lose by one instead
- 1:13Speaker 2: of four, right? I mean, the math tells you that
- 1:18Speaker 2: he did the right thing and that the Rams scoring
- 1:20Speaker 2: two touchdowns, including going 98 yards on the first one, right?
- 1:24Speaker 3: That was the reason why I'm like, I get why
- 1:26Speaker 3: they did it because the defense is playing so well,
- 1:28Speaker 3: but because they're on the field for so long as
- 1:31Speaker 3: the offense just continued to sputter, I don't know what
- 1:34Speaker 3: their record is for the first four games, but to
- 1:36Speaker 3: not score a point in the second half, It is
- 1:38Speaker 3: hard to do. But I would tell you that I
- 1:42Speaker 3: understand both sides of the argument. You and I were texting.
- 1:46Speaker 3: I was sort of agreeing with you.
- 1:48Speaker 2: I don't think I understand the others. How mathematically does
- 1:52Speaker 2: it make sense? You would have lost by one instead
- 1:54Speaker 2: of four.
- 1:54Speaker 1: What's the difference?
- 1:55Speaker 3: But again, it's how the Rams would have touched down
- 1:59Speaker 3: two field goals instead of 10 points. But you're saying, okay. Yeah.
- 2:07Speaker 3: you're saying as long as they, so you're absolutely correct.
- 2:10Speaker 3: If they go score, the game's absolutely over. There's no
- 2:11Speaker 3: way they're choking. Yep. There's no way they're choking. And
- 2:15Speaker 3: when you're that close, um, it's the argument against it
- 2:19Speaker 3: is okay. It's just the execution. You've got Markel bell
- 2:22Speaker 3: who you knew was going to be challenged. He was, we'll,
- 2:24Speaker 3: we'll get into that. We'll also talk more about it
- 2:26Speaker 3: with Greg Cosell on the inside of the tape show.
- 2:28Speaker 3: So we'll know exactly how we really played, but you know,
- 2:31Speaker 3: you're down at receiver. You don't have Lane Johnson. Give, uh,
- 2:37Speaker 3: give Cooper credit. Darius Cooper is just, I mean, he's
- 2:42Speaker 3: having to play because they're running out of players. And
- 2:45Speaker 3: good for him to show up. In fact, he caught
- 2:48Speaker 3: his first two passes for touchdowns and his third when
- 2:50Speaker 3: he slipped. But overall, their fight was there. The injuries
- 2:55Speaker 3: caught up to him. Lacks of execution. I'm not letting
- 2:59Speaker 3: Madden off the hook here. I'm going to tell you why.
- 3:01Speaker 3: This is something I talked about in our pregame show
- 3:04Speaker 3: with Greg Cosell. And Greg's point was it's also the coaches,
- 3:07Speaker 3: his assistants as well, which is a fair point. But
- 3:11Speaker 3: you have to do all you can to help. My
- 3:14Speaker 3: point was stack releases, bunches. They did reduce the receivers
- 3:18Speaker 3: and tight ends, which means you're not playing them out wide.
- 3:19Speaker 3: You're cutting it tighter. And it's hard to play man
- 3:22Speaker 3: coverage like that. It's a little bit harder to do it.
- 3:25Speaker 3: John D. Filippo told me that. In fact, he actually
- 3:28Speaker 3: explained it to me. It's much harder. Wider splits, it's
- 3:31Speaker 3: so much easier to press. When you make them tighter,
- 3:34Speaker 3: it's harder. because you knew it when you, when Chris Schulte,
- 3:37Speaker 3: the D coordinator sees what he's going up against. Okay.
- 3:41Speaker 3: No Goddard, no Smitty. Okay. No Lane Johnson. Hello. We're
- 3:45Speaker 3: going to make life really hard for Jalen hurts. And he,
- 3:47Speaker 3: and he did. Yeah. But I give them credit for
- 3:50Speaker 3: going up 2010 that they deserve credit for that. It's
- 3:52Speaker 3: not sure.
- 3:53Speaker 1: I know that.
- 3:54Speaker 3: I know people who, who can't, who hates Sirianni are
- 3:56Speaker 3: going to blame him. That's that's your deal. Go ahead
- 3:58Speaker 3: and blame him. He stinks. He's a bad coach. Okay.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Whatever you want to call him. That's fine. But, Mannion
- 4:05Speaker 3: deserves a chunk of this.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Well, here's where I will agree with you, which folds
- 4:10Speaker 2: the last topic point into this one. I still think
- 4:14Speaker 2: they should have gone for it on fourth down because
- 4:16Speaker 2: of everything I laid out mathematically. I did not love,
- 4:20Speaker 2: and I know this is retrospect and judging play calling
- 4:23Speaker 2: is an issue, but there was a mess up on
- 4:25Speaker 2: that fourth and goal play that they ran. It looked
- 4:27Speaker 2: to me like Hertz, who was under center, rolling out,
- 4:30Speaker 2: ran into the motion.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Oh, real quick, real quick.
- 4:34Speaker 3: You know, Sirianni tried to call timeout. I forgot to
- 4:36Speaker 3: mention that. In fact, they showed it on a box.
- 4:38Speaker 3: You couldn't see it in the press box.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Okay, yeah.
- 4:40Speaker 3: But Sirianni, he went down, he went like this, and
- 4:43Speaker 3: either he didn't hear him or he didn't see it.
- 4:44Speaker 3: So that might be on your point. That's obviously what
- 4:46Speaker 3: I'm thinking about in my notes, and I forgot to
- 4:48Speaker 3: mention that. But finish your thought. I just want to make.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Sure you hear that.
- 4:51Speaker 2: In that situation, you know, four weeks into the season,
- 4:54Speaker 2: you've got to run a play that you're really comfortable with,
- 4:57Speaker 2: not a play that's going to have your quarterback get
- 5:00Speaker 2: obstructed by somebody.
- 5:01Speaker 1: It was a discombobulated play. Yeah.
- 5:04Speaker 2: I think it was more of that than the Rams
- 5:06Speaker 2: sniffed it out. I was in the locker room. I
- 5:08Speaker 2: asked some guys about it. Unfortunately, like when you're talking
- 5:10Speaker 2: to guys who were right after that, they need to
- 5:12Speaker 2: watch it on tape themselves. They know that they messed
- 5:15Speaker 2: up on an opportunity. In fact, a lot of them
- 5:17Speaker 2: were talking about that was the game right there. That
- 5:19Speaker 2: fourth and two play call was absolutely the game. Like
- 5:23Speaker 2: you said, if they go up 17, there's no way
- 5:25Speaker 2: the Rams win.
- 5:25Speaker 3: They know it.
- 5:26Speaker 1: They know they blew it.
- 5:27Speaker 2: But, It sort of goes back to what we said,
- 5:29Speaker 2: I guess, against the Bears game when Dalton came in
- 5:32Speaker 2: and you allowed, you called a play that, yes, Andy
- 5:35Speaker 2: Dalton should have never, ever thrown it. It's 90, 80%,
- 5:38Speaker 2: whatever percentage you want to put on Dalton from not
- 5:41Speaker 2: seeing the deep safety. But I loved your point. Like,
- 5:44Speaker 2: don't even let him have to make that decision coming
- 5:46Speaker 2: in and call it off. Give him a sprint right
- 5:48Speaker 2: option with one guy open or throw it away, right?
- 5:51Speaker 2: And in this case, I would have probably... I'd rather
- 5:54Speaker 2: seen something a little bit more effective where you don't
- 5:56Speaker 2: have guys running into each other.
- 5:59Speaker 3: They missed the tush push from a yard and a half.
- 6:01Speaker 3: It was not a yard. It was a yard and
- 6:02Speaker 3: a half. It was a little longer. But they still
- 6:04Speaker 3: missed it. I was like, wow, they didn't get it.
- 6:06Speaker 3: It was kind of obvious. You could see it with
- 6:10Speaker 3: the video feed. They didn't get it. And I was like, oh, boy,
- 6:13Speaker 3: this is not good. They're starting to break down on offense.
- 6:18Speaker 3: And honestly, their offense did next to nothing in the
- 6:21Speaker 3: first half. But Hurts didn't turn it over. I've just
- 6:27Speaker 3: been a little bit underwhelmed with Manny, and I'm expecting more.
- 6:30Speaker 3: He doesn't control the injuries. I understand that. They didn't
- 6:34Speaker 3: know until this morning that they were not going to
- 6:35Speaker 3: have or potentially have, not have, and they wound up
- 6:38Speaker 3: not having Lane Johnson. They don't control that. But the
- 6:41Speaker 3: players you do have, you need to take better advantage
- 6:45Speaker 3: of it, okay? I know it's tough for him. He's
- 6:48Speaker 3: a rookie play caller. He's dealt a very tough hand.
- 6:51Speaker 3: But you can do more. Exactly what we talked about
- 6:54Speaker 3: in our pregame show, he did not do enough of.
- 6:57Speaker 3: I like stack releases because the defenses know exactly where
- 7:00Speaker 3: you're going. I like that. Bunches. The motion's very simple.
- 7:05Speaker 3: They had a great motion play for one of the runs,
- 7:07Speaker 3: which I liked. But you saw Hertz was part of
- 7:10Speaker 3: the run game, finally. More part of the run game.
- 7:13Speaker 3: A little bit, yeah.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Some of it was more scrambling, but yes, there were.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Yeah, but they had at least one or two designs.
- 7:18Speaker 3: But yeah, but overall... I want to see more out
- 7:21Speaker 3: of Mannion.
- 7:22Speaker 2: So you're making a really good point that I wanted
- 7:24Speaker 2: to talk about here, but I also want to be fair.
- 7:27Speaker 2: I mean, like we're trying to judge this guy in
- 7:29Speaker 2: his fourth game when one or two injuries is okay.
- 7:33Speaker 2: I don't, you know, but losing two starting linemen, one
- 7:36Speaker 2: of them right before the game with Lane Johnson, and
- 7:38Speaker 2: we hope everything's all right with him. And then obviously
- 7:41Speaker 2: losing Barkley in the middle of the game, no Smitty.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Like I get it.
- 7:44Speaker 2: He had both hands tied behind his back, but there
- 7:47Speaker 2: are two things that stick out to me here.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Adam, that you are hitting on.
- 7:50Speaker 2: And that, you know, as the Eagles get healthier, we're
- 7:53Speaker 2: really going to have to key in on is.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Hopefully, yeah, they can't get it. They can't get any
- 7:58Speaker 1: more unhealthy.
- 7:59Speaker 2: But as they get healthier, like, yes, they are doing
- 8:03Speaker 2: the concepts that we talked about with Sean Manning as
- 8:05Speaker 2: far as under center and play action. But when they're
- 8:07Speaker 2: under center, they're running. When they're in shotgun, they're passing.
- 8:11Speaker 2: To your point, like, you're not seeing anything that's giving
- 8:16Speaker 2: the defense that much guesswork. OK, and I get it again.
- 8:20Speaker 2: This is a bigger discussion for down the line, but
- 8:22Speaker 2: it was also not just this game. It was weeks one,
- 8:25Speaker 2: two and three. We've seen the offense struggle. We know
- 8:27Speaker 2: they're in an adaptation mode. We know that there's growing pains.
- 8:30Speaker 2: We talked about it at nausea, but I was hoping
- 8:34Speaker 2: by this point we would start to see better examples of, hey,
- 8:37Speaker 2: that was a good under center play action pass.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Right.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Where you explore the middle of the field or.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Or you went shotgun and you whipped out one of
- 8:45Speaker 2: those either hurts runs or inside zones that surprised them
- 8:49Speaker 2: because they thought you were going to pass. It's a
- 8:51Speaker 2: little predictable right now. I don't think the route concepts
- 8:54Speaker 2: look all that different. Every once in a while you
- 8:56Speaker 2: see something nice. But right now, to me, they're stuck
- 8:59Speaker 2: in the old offense versus the new offense. Trying to
- 9:01Speaker 2: run the old offense and new offense is closed, if
- 9:03Speaker 2: that makes sense. Meaning you're running, running, running, and then
- 9:08Speaker 2: you're passing when you should be passing.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Kosel had the stats in one of the shows last week. it's,
- 9:14Speaker 3: it's crazy. Like we've outlined for like three years, how
- 9:18Speaker 3: much better conceptual and how under center play action works. Okay.
- 9:24Speaker 3: They rarely do it. Like he's under, he's under center.
- 9:26Speaker 3: They throw the football. I don't understand. I just don't understand.
- 9:29Speaker 3: That's the thing I don't get. And this is where Sirianni,
- 9:33Speaker 3: you don't want to be overbearing as a head coach,
- 9:35Speaker 3: but you have to see these things to put these
- 9:38Speaker 3: things out. These are the corrections that you can make. They're,
- 9:41Speaker 3: they're things they don't control. You mentioned Barkley. Obviously, that
- 9:44Speaker 3: was a major thing. And then his backup gets hurt.
- 9:45Speaker 3: They end of the game with one running back. Now,
- 9:47Speaker 3: they do have three running backs on the practice squad.
- 9:51Speaker 3: G-Don Blue from the formerly the Cowboys is explosive, but
- 9:54Speaker 3: they were done with him for just lack of discipline.
- 9:57Speaker 3: And Carson Steele, who was in. player who could catch
- 10:00Speaker 3: the football, if you remember, what he did in the preseason.
- 10:05Speaker 3: And Damian Pierce was once a starting running back for
- 10:08Speaker 3: the Texans. So they have some guys. They're obviously going
- 10:10Speaker 3: to have to add one, if not two, next week.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Can you imagine if the Eagles have to fly to
- 10:14Speaker 1: London with Carson Steele and Jadon Blue as their healthiest
- 10:17Speaker 1: running backs?
- 10:19Speaker 3: Or Pierce. Pierce has been here for a while. He's
- 10:21Speaker 3: been here the longest of that group.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Either way.
- 10:25Speaker 3: He's got the most looks in practice and training camp.
- 10:29Speaker 3: It's a tough deal. There's no question. Vannion is a
- 10:33Speaker 3: tough deal. But as a coach, you want to control
- 10:35Speaker 3: the things that you know how to control. You can't
- 10:37Speaker 3: control Lyman, your top two running backs being out. It
- 10:41Speaker 3: limits what you can do, but there's something you can
- 10:43Speaker 3: do with any amount of players that you have. That's
- 10:45Speaker 3: my one pet peeve. But when they had a full deck,
- 10:48Speaker 3: he wasn't really doing it very much. So you want
- 10:51Speaker 3: to see that. The tight end thing is like, see,
- 10:56Speaker 3: the thing is when you make trades, whether it's a
- 10:58Speaker 3: receiver or tight end or doing something, when you make trades,
- 11:02Speaker 3: you're not doing it for three weeks. Is they're going
- 11:04Speaker 3: to get these guys back? Because you're not going to
- 11:06Speaker 3: make up trades and the guys don't play anymore. Like
- 11:07Speaker 3: it doesn't work that way. if you're going to make
- 11:10Speaker 3: a trade, it's a guy's going to have a role here.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Like the guy's going to play a lot. And that's
- 11:13Speaker 3: the push pull with Smitty might not play next week
- 11:17Speaker 3: because he's had the same injury he's had for nearly
- 11:18Speaker 3: three months. Now you're now into the third month, early August,
- 11:23Speaker 3: all of August, almost all September. Now we're in October. Okay. Yeah.
- 11:28Speaker 3: It's just the running game. It's tough. You can't get
- 11:32Speaker 3: anything going. It's people want to blame hurts. That's fine.
- 11:36Speaker 3: it's hard. You're limited. You're just limited to what you
- 11:39Speaker 3: can do, but you want to take advantage of what
- 11:41Speaker 3: you have.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:43Speaker 2: I think you hit a point on the head. I mean,
- 11:45Speaker 2: you can't watch this game and say, hey, Jalen Hurts
- 11:47Speaker 2: played great. He obviously didn't play great. He couldn't play great.
- 11:50Speaker 2: I mean, the overloads on the right side of the
- 11:53Speaker 2: line made it very difficult.
- 11:54Speaker 1: For them to even get a pass off.
- 11:57Speaker 2: The one touchdown of the two that he threw was
- 11:59Speaker 2: a terrible pass that Darius Cooper saved them with an
- 12:02Speaker 2: unbelievable fingertip.
- 12:03Speaker 1: He took it out of Lake's fingertips. That was amazing, right?
- 12:06Speaker 3: Unbelievable.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Right.
- 12:08Speaker 2: But to your point, the reason why they're going for
- 12:13Speaker 2: it on fourth and two with a real chance to
- 12:14Speaker 2: win that game if they go up 17 is because
- 12:17Speaker 2: Hurts did not turn the ball over. And on a
- 12:20Speaker 2: day like today with no personnel around you and the
- 12:22Speaker 2: hits he was taking, I thought that was very admirable.
- 12:25Speaker 2: That's the only thing I could say about the offense
- 12:27Speaker 2: that was admirable, but that was– Very admirable. And we
- 12:30Speaker 2: say that quite a bit about Hurts, his ability to
- 12:32Speaker 2: face a lot of adversity and limit turnovers, even though
- 12:35Speaker 2: the last few weeks he's had some. This game was
- 12:38Speaker 2: about ball protection being the utmost security because you can't
- 12:42Speaker 2: give that other team extra possessions.
- 12:44Speaker 3: We need to talk about, I had mentioned the pregame,
- 12:47Speaker 3: and I had no idea what the rain was going
- 12:49Speaker 3: to be like. You were at the game. But Brady
- 12:51Speaker 3: kept talking about the slick ball. It's funny, the Fox
- 12:54Speaker 3: cameras were covered in rain, but it didn't rain hard, right? Right.
- 12:58Speaker 3: It was a misty– like, it just– you know, I
- 13:03Speaker 3: was looking at the hour-by-hour. It was like 0.1, 0.1 rain, 0.1 rain.
- 13:06Speaker 3: I'm like, oh, not the damn mist.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Right.
- 13:08Speaker 3: And then Brady was talking about how tough it is,
- 13:11Speaker 3: even if it doesn't rain hard, but if it gets slick. Mm-hmm.
- 13:14Speaker 3: And Darius Cooper fell. Yep. You saw guys slipping a
- 13:18Speaker 3: little bit. The ball wasn't coming out of Stafford's hands
- 13:20Speaker 3: well enough and all. So he played like crap. And,
- 13:23Speaker 3: you know, the Eagles defense was really good for two-and-a-half quarters. Now,
- 13:26Speaker 3: the run defense– which is really good for a while
- 13:30Speaker 3: in the game. Then they started diving, missing tackles. Kyron
- 13:36Speaker 3: Williams got shut down for a while. Then he got
- 13:39Speaker 3: the game done. He was really great in the end. And,
- 13:43Speaker 3: I mean, I give finally Sean McVay beat Sirianni, but
- 13:48Speaker 3: it wasn't easy. The Eagles kind of gave it to him,
- 13:50Speaker 3: but we understand why, because they didn't control a lot
- 13:52Speaker 3: of it, which is injuries.
- 13:54Speaker 2: I think, Adam, when I look at this game, knowing
- 13:57Speaker 2: what they were up against, One loss, week four, I
- 14:00Speaker 2: get it. It's two straight losses for them, and they're 2-2,
- 14:02Speaker 2: and it's still so early in the season.
- 14:04Speaker 1: They were 2-2 the Super Bowl year.
- 14:05Speaker 2: So I have less concern about this actual loss and
- 14:10Speaker 2: some of the elements of it that we're talking about
- 14:12Speaker 2: and more about, holy cow, how are the next few
- 14:15Speaker 2: weeks going to be looking like? I mean, we have
- 14:17Speaker 2: no idea what's going to be the status of Lane Johnson. Again,
- 14:19Speaker 2: we hope everything is okay with him. That obviously hurt
- 14:23Speaker 2: them to not have him at the last minute like that.
- 14:26Speaker 2: And now you've got guys dropping like flies, both on
- 14:29Speaker 2: offense and defense. Who knows what it's going to look like?
- 14:32Speaker 2: And then this team has kind of been hit with
- 14:34Speaker 2: the pop-up injuries throughout the week for the last few weeks, too.
- 14:37Speaker 2: So you're trying to get as many wins. You're trying to,
- 14:40Speaker 2: as a team, come together. You're trying to learn your
- 14:42Speaker 2: new offense, improve on defense. And yet it's always like
- 14:45Speaker 2: a couple of steps backward with all these injuries. So
- 14:48Speaker 2: I have major concern there. And I'm sure you're going
- 14:51Speaker 2: to agree with me because we already talked about this.
- 14:53Speaker 2: The Eagles are skating on thin ice with their bottom
- 14:57Speaker 2: roster management and their elevations. They did not elevate an
- 15:01Speaker 2: offensive tackle knowing Fred Johnson was going to be out.
- 15:04Speaker 2: They didn't know about Lane Johnson, but they knew Fred
- 15:06Speaker 2: Johnson was already out. So that means you only have
- 15:08Speaker 2: one backup tackle, who's the rookie, Markel Bell, right, who
- 15:12Speaker 2: is really just a right tackle. Imagine if Jordan Mailata
- 15:16Speaker 2: or if Bell had gotten hurt in this game where
- 15:19Speaker 2: everybody was getting hurt and the rain– They would have
- 15:22Speaker 2: had to move Tyler Steen, the only guy who's probably
- 15:25Speaker 2: played tackle before. And then played Willie Lampkin at the
- 15:28Speaker 2: other guy. I mean, it would have been even more
- 15:30Speaker 2: of a disaster than it was. They've got to figure
- 15:33Speaker 2: something out. They cannot continue to skate by this way
- 15:36Speaker 2: without it really backfiring on them.
- 15:39Speaker 3: Yeah. So on your point about that, let's just kind
- 15:42Speaker 3: of reveal where they're at on both sides of the
- 15:44Speaker 3: football with the injury situation and what has to happen. Remember,
- 15:46Speaker 3: they're playing in London next week. Our time, 9.30 a.m. Eastern. Oh, boy.
- 15:52Speaker 3: It's a tough deal. So, Smitty with a hamstring, I'd
- 15:55Speaker 3: be surprised if he played. This is the same injury, again,
- 15:58Speaker 3: as we outlined Freeze had for over eight weeks. It
- 16:02Speaker 3: doesn't get better by playing on it, okay?
- 16:04Speaker 2: Yeah, nothing like sitting on a 12-hour flight, eight to
- 16:07Speaker 2: 12-hour flight with a bum hamstring.
- 16:09Speaker 1: That's not easy.
- 16:10Speaker 3: Tough deal. Tough deal. Hollywood Brown, who got hurt in
- 16:13Speaker 3: last week's practice with the ankle injury. So, we don't
- 16:17Speaker 3: know if it's high ankle or not, but They could
- 16:19Speaker 3: have used him. Because they don't have anyone that could run, really, downfield,
- 16:23Speaker 3: past 10 yards. Wicks is sort of like an intermediate
- 16:26Speaker 3: area running for the catch guy, but they need a verticality,
- 16:29Speaker 3: and he's really not that guy. They look good, but
- 16:33Speaker 3: it's getting harder and harder because he's having more of
- 16:35Speaker 3: a role. Then you mentioned Lane Johnson, his personal issue.
- 16:41Speaker 3: We'll see about next week. Fred Johnson, who got hurt
- 16:44Speaker 3: last week's practice with a knee injury. We don't know
- 16:46Speaker 3: exactly what it is. That's concerning. Let me see. Defensively,
- 16:52Speaker 3: Grenard with the ankle did not return it for getting hurt.
- 16:55Speaker 3: He did start for the first time, by the way.
- 16:57Speaker 3: He did start the game. Had a couple quality rushes.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Zach Vaughn with a concussion. He needs to get cleared.
- 17:03Speaker 3: Quinion Mitchell with a knee injury, which was kind of odd.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Of course, Barkley, excuse me. Barkley with the right hamstring injury.
- 17:15Speaker 3: He didn't return. And then Tank Bigsby. It looked groin,
- 17:18Speaker 3: but they didn't list it, so I don't know what
- 17:20Speaker 3: it is. Yeah.
- 17:21Speaker 2: It didn't look easy. It didn't look like something he
- 17:24Speaker 2: could shake off easily. I mean, I don't want to speculate,
- 17:26Speaker 2: but just from a live viewpoint, it did not look great.
- 17:30Speaker 3: So offense we've done, we mentioned a cue with the
- 17:33Speaker 3: knee injury. We hope it's no more than a hyperextension.
- 17:38Speaker 3: When he hit the ground on the sideline, his legs
- 17:41Speaker 3: were spread a little bit, and it might have hyperextended
- 17:44Speaker 3: his knee. We'll see. See what the evaluation is.
- 17:48Speaker 2: By the way, did TV note the fact that for
- 17:52Speaker 2: a real brief moment, Drew Kendall was in the medical tent?
- 17:55Speaker 3: I didn't have the sound up all the time.
- 17:58Speaker 1: That would have also been another disaster.
- 18:01Speaker 3: When was he there?
- 18:02Speaker 1: It was early.
- 18:03Speaker 2: It was not too long after Saquon went out. He
- 18:07Speaker 2: came back. Just think of what you'd have to do
- 18:10Speaker 2: on your own. Lampkin would have had to come in
- 18:12Speaker 2: and then you got Lampkin playing next to him. Or
- 18:15Speaker 2: Juergens maybe moves back and Lampkin goes to guard.
- 18:17Speaker 1: I don't know. And Markel Bell starting on the right side.
- 18:19Speaker 1: It would have been tough.
- 18:21Speaker 3: All right. So right now, here you're starting. Depending on
- 18:24Speaker 3: what happens with Lane Johnson, whether Lane's able to be
- 18:27Speaker 3: back next week or not, we don't know yet. So
- 18:29Speaker 3: right now, it's Wicks, Lemon, and Cooper are the three receivers.
- 18:34Speaker 3: And Elijah Moore's the fourth. You saw him run in motion,
- 18:37Speaker 3: but they don't throw it to him.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:39Speaker 3: Okay. So Markel Bell's your right tackle. The tight ends,
- 18:43Speaker 3: they dressed four. They elevated Ertz, so it was Munt, Ertz.
- 18:48Speaker 3: They just went with a committee. Jenkins and DeGuarra, who
- 18:50Speaker 3: was 45, I saw them in the game. Right now,
- 18:53Speaker 3: Will Shipley would be a starting running back against Jacksonville
- 18:56Speaker 3: until we get more information about the other two guys.
- 19:00Speaker 3: If the other two guys are not available, they'll obviously
- 19:03Speaker 3: have to elevate two running backs next week. Sign them
- 19:06Speaker 3: off of it, elevate either way, but you can't go
- 19:09Speaker 3: in a game with two running backs. That cannot happen.
- 19:11Speaker 3: It's not like the Eagles. The Eagles don't use a fullback.
- 19:13Speaker 3: They didn't do any practicing with it. There was some
- 19:15Speaker 3: stuff that was out there that was completely false. Someone
- 19:19Speaker 3: put it out there that they had plays with a
- 19:22Speaker 3: fullback in training camp. That's not true. They would have
- 19:25Speaker 3: the F tight end offset, and it.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Looked like it's not a tight end. No, no.
- 19:30Speaker 2: You're just putting them in a different alignment.
- 19:33Speaker 3: Yeah, that's called the F position. In fact, Ertz did
- 19:35Speaker 3: a lot with Goddard when they played together.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Right.
- 19:38Speaker 3: All right, so defensively now.
- 19:41Speaker 2: By the way, real quick, I just wanted to say,
- 19:43Speaker 2: the Eagles played with 47 players today, okay?
- 19:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I know why.
- 19:48Speaker 2: You got one extra spot. Like, you could have signed
- 19:51Speaker 2: Ertz if you wanted to your 53. I mean, he's
- 19:53Speaker 2: probably going to get there eventually. And then used an
- 19:57Speaker 2: elevation on the offensive line.
- 19:58Speaker 3: Well, they didn't know about Lane, right, but they didn't know...
- 20:01Speaker 3: Even if it's.
- 20:02Speaker 1: 48, you're off 49, right? You could have....
- 20:07Speaker 3: In terms of how many guys could you have active
- 20:09Speaker 3: on game day? 47. Yeah. Right, right.
- 20:13Speaker 2: 47 active. But Cole Payton was one of their inactives, correct?
- 20:17Speaker 3: No, they couldn't have an extra inactive because they ran
- 20:20Speaker 3: out of guys.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Right, right. No, Cole Payton was inactive. He was definitely inactive.
- 20:27Speaker 3: He was inactive, but he wasn't the inactive quarterback. They
- 20:30Speaker 3: didn't need to do that.
- 20:31Speaker 1: Right.
- 20:32Speaker 3: Oh, the NFL Network reported that McKee now over Dalton...
- 20:35Speaker 3: This is funny. This is funny how that works out.
- 20:38Speaker 1: That's another thing. What's going on? What kind of decision making?
- 20:44Speaker 2: That to me is just a sign of an organization
- 20:47Speaker 2: that's normally typically pretty buttoned down, kind of like Taking
- 20:51Speaker 2: advantage of that. Football is finally back, and PrizePix is

- 23:29Speaker 2: Camden Apothecary, top quality cannabis, great prices, and an experience
- 23:34Speaker 2: made for Philly fans 21 and up.
- 23:37Speaker 3: So let's go to defense. They got the three, the
- 23:40Speaker 3: front three. There were 34 fronts. Bernard got hurt as
- 23:43Speaker 3: one of their starters.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Played well, though. You could tell he was making an
- 23:46Speaker 1: impact before he left.
- 23:47Speaker 3: He was. He looked good. He actually looked good. And,
- 23:50Speaker 3: by the way, Smitty started over. Nolan Smith started over Hunt. So,
- 23:54Speaker 3: right now, Hunt will start and Smith will start. And then,
- 23:59Speaker 3: secondary with Quinion Mitchell's injury. We don't know that. If
- 24:02Speaker 3: he can't play. It's Jonathan Jones who made some plays.
- 24:05Speaker 3: Gave up some plays.
- 24:06Speaker 2: He made some plays. They picked on him. Let's be honest.
- 24:10Speaker 3: Immediately.
- 24:12Speaker 1: You were right.
- 24:12Speaker 2: You said Stafford didn't play very well for that, and
- 24:14Speaker 2: he had a chance to really strike to, was it
- 24:19Speaker 2: Devontae Adams deep on Jonathan Jones about four plays in
- 24:23Speaker 2: on that third down, and he just overthrew it by
- 24:25Speaker 2: a little bit.
- 24:26Speaker 3: Might have hit the top of his fingers.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Yeah. It's a tough play. They had beaten Jones badly
- 24:31Speaker 1: on that, yeah.
- 24:32Speaker 3: Yeah, but again, the defense did its job.
- 24:35Speaker 2: Sure.
- 24:35Speaker 3: I don't know about you, but I expected the rebound.
- 24:38Speaker 3: They really did, but then... it caught up with them
- 24:41Speaker 3: with Grenard out Mitchell out. Okay. Oh, and then of course,
- 24:44Speaker 3: Bon out being who's one of the best coverage linebackers,
- 24:47Speaker 3: the national football league. So that, that crushed him. So
- 24:51Speaker 3: right now linebacker, you've got trot junior until bonds. We'll
- 24:55Speaker 3: see if bond gets cleared. It's very rare for a,
- 24:57Speaker 3: I mean, it happens, but it's, it's rare for a
- 25:00Speaker 3: player to be out two weeks at concussion. But anyway,
- 25:04Speaker 3: we'll see what we'll see. It was a short week. Anyway,
- 25:07Speaker 3: you wouldn't could be available. We'll see how he's doing.
- 25:09Speaker 3: He needs to be able to travel. So we'll see.
- 25:12Speaker 3: It's not a lock that will be available. So Trott Jr.
- 25:15Speaker 3: is starting for him. At a corner now, we mentioned Jones.
- 25:18Speaker 3: Carter for Epps. And now the backups now. Okay, the
- 25:23Speaker 3: key backups. Kenny Moore was active, was he not, for
- 25:25Speaker 3: the game?
- 25:26Speaker 1: He was. I believe he was.
- 25:29Speaker 3: Yeah, because that's why they signed him off there. So
- 25:31Speaker 3: right now, the fourth corner, I totally forgot Johnny McFadden.
- 25:37Speaker 3: Mac McWilliams is 22. I'm like, who's 22? Is that
- 25:40Speaker 3: Asante Samuel? No, it's Mac McWilliams.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Yep. He was in there.
- 25:44Speaker 3: Oh, that's because I haven't seen him in a while.
- 25:45Speaker 3: So he, he, he seemed to be the fourth corner. Yeah.
- 25:49Speaker 3: So they're running, they're running really low in depth right now.
- 25:52Speaker 3: It's getting to the point where, you know, you see
- 25:56Speaker 3: who's available. It's really odd. Howie for several years was
- 26:01Speaker 3: not likely working out players. They're generally, they're down near
- 26:04Speaker 3: the end on the work player workouts in season. Um,
- 26:09Speaker 3: so they're, they're not really gonna have to have a
- 26:10Speaker 3: choice here. They're gonna have to start working on players
- 26:12Speaker 3: a lot.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:14Speaker 3: And then they got to look at the trade market.
- 26:15Speaker 3: They've got to look at the trade market. It's, but again,
- 26:18Speaker 3: it's for, you're not bringing someone here as a fifth,
- 26:20Speaker 3: like a fifth receiver. You need someone here. If you're
- 26:22Speaker 3: going to make a trade for receiver or tight end
- 26:27Speaker 3: tight ends, way more important because they're getting Smitty's Smitty's
- 26:31Speaker 3: not going to be out that much longer.
- 26:32Speaker 2: Okay.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Um, knock on wood.
- 26:35Speaker 3: Yeah, well, if he has another setback, yeah, that's the problem.
- 26:38Speaker 3: You can't keep playing this guy. But I just want
- 26:41Speaker 3: people to understand, I think sometimes we're short-sighted with these trades.
- 26:45Speaker 3: Just make a trade. Just make a trade. Well, what
- 26:48Speaker 3: type of player are you trading for? A starter? Or
- 26:51Speaker 3: a backup? Does he know the terminology here? This is
- 26:54Speaker 3: the thing that's plagued Howie a little bit with trades
- 26:56Speaker 3: over the years. They bring guys in here who don't
- 26:58Speaker 3: know the terminology or don't understand. Like Ja'Cory Bennett didn't
- 27:01Speaker 3: understand the defense. He just did. Okay. Kevin Byard is
- 27:05Speaker 3: about as smart as it gets. It was a non-factor
- 27:07Speaker 3: in 23. Okay. In season trading for safety, it doesn't work. Right.
- 27:12Speaker 3: You have to be careful. They have to understand the
- 27:15Speaker 3: West coast terminology if you're going to do that. So
- 27:17Speaker 3: we'll see what happens. And we'll try to put together
- 27:19Speaker 3: a list of realistic trade targets that you don't have
- 27:22Speaker 3: to give up a ton for. I was laughing at
- 27:26Speaker 3: like Jerry, Jerry Judy is so Jerry Judy is basically
- 27:29Speaker 3: a glorified slot receiver. The Browns would die to give
- 27:32Speaker 3: him away.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Okay.
- 27:33Speaker 3: Yeah. he has no role. It's like, why would you
- 27:38Speaker 3: trade for this guy?
- 27:39Speaker 2: I mean, he, I, I wouldn't want them, but yeah,
- 27:44Speaker 2: that's the problem is that some of the areas where
- 27:46Speaker 2: the Eagles really use like an offensive line, a guard
- 27:49Speaker 2: to play left guard, right?
- 27:51Speaker 1: No, it's trading a good left guard in the middle
- 27:53Speaker 1: of the year. You're not going to, that's not going
- 27:55Speaker 1: to happen. Um, And there are certain spots, like cornerback,
- 27:58Speaker 1: it's hard to find a really good corner.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Sauce Gardner is a once-in-a-lifetime thing because the team gets–
- 28:04Speaker 2: Howie's not giving up two first-round picks for safety.
- 28:06Speaker 3: But what I would say was, depending on the severity
- 28:09Speaker 3: of these injuries, that changes everything. If these are serious, okay,
- 28:13Speaker 3: if these guys are going to be out long-term, then
- 28:15Speaker 3: you have to throw a little bit of caution to
- 28:16Speaker 3: one and go, hey, listen, we're going to need a
- 28:18Speaker 3: pretty good player here. That's what I'm trying to say is,
- 28:22Speaker 3: depends on the type of player you're looking for, the
- 28:25Speaker 3: position– do you think they fit? What's the cost? That's
- 28:30Speaker 3: always number one. What is the cost? And what will
- 28:33Speaker 3: the role be here?
- 28:35Speaker 2: Right.
- 28:35Speaker 3: You need, this is where pro personnel departments are so
- 28:37Speaker 3: important because they know these players back. It's their job
- 28:40Speaker 3: to know who's available. They know by snap counts, by
- 28:44Speaker 3: their own sources, they kind of know, because remember they
- 28:47Speaker 3: get to try, they're allowed to go to games. They
- 28:49Speaker 3: can't go to practice, but they go to games. They see,
- 28:52Speaker 3: they watch warmups. They kind of know body language. They
- 28:55Speaker 3: kind of know what's going on. So the, The Eagles
- 28:57Speaker 3: are in an interesting situation, but as we mentioned the
- 29:00Speaker 3: other day, the Jaguars game should be extremely tough. It's
- 29:03Speaker 3: going to be hard to win, but their schedule eases
- 29:05Speaker 3: up big time after that. Big time.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 29:07Speaker 2: You just have to hope the injuries ease up on
- 29:09Speaker 2: them as they get into that easier part of their schedule.
- 29:13Speaker 2: Is there anything I mean? Look, special teams was great.
- 29:16Speaker 2: Britton Covey had an awesome return that helped set up
- 29:19Speaker 2: a touchdown. Jake Elliott made a 58, 56-yard field goal.
- 29:23Speaker 2: If you're going to look for one area of the
- 29:25Speaker 2: team that really came through and gave them a shot.
- 29:27Speaker 2: It was that because those were two really, really big
- 29:29Speaker 2: plays in the game that helped them build that 10
- 29:32Speaker 2: point lead. But other than that, I mean, it's hard
- 29:34Speaker 2: to get too nitpicky on things when the.
- 29:37Speaker 1: Situation was what it is.
- 29:39Speaker 2: And we'll have a lot of coverage this week on
- 29:41Speaker 2: Inside the Birds, breaking down some of the things that happened. Obviously,
- 29:44Speaker 2: Greg will go into it. I really want to go
- 29:47Speaker 2: on that fourth and two play with Greg and see
- 29:49Speaker 2: what the breakdown was that led to them not even
- 29:51Speaker 2: being able to get a positive play on it. And
- 29:53Speaker 2: then we'll take a look at how the Rams were
- 29:55Speaker 2: able to go down the field pretty easily there.
- 29:57Speaker 1: In the fourth quarter and where the breakdowns were.
- 30:00Speaker 3: One thing I did notice and look at my notes
- 30:01Speaker 3: here is that, and this is where Greg comes in.
- 30:03Speaker 3: Cause we'll have to, we'll have to ask if he
- 30:05Speaker 3: noticed it. Sometimes when quarterbacks know that they're playing with
- 30:10Speaker 3: backup linemen, like CJ Stroud, one of the part of
- 30:12Speaker 3: his regression is he's, he's perceiving or feeling pressure before
- 30:16Speaker 3: it happens. Greg was telling me that when he was
- 30:17Speaker 3: watching tape, although he was great Sunday against Dallas, but
- 30:21Speaker 3: there were three or four plays where I saw it
- 30:23Speaker 3: was like, why is Hertz keep retreating? Like, why does
- 30:25Speaker 3: he keep doing this? One of them was the touchdown
- 30:28Speaker 3: to Cooper, where clearly he kept dropping back. Like, stand
- 30:32Speaker 3: there and throw. You're not going to get sacked. Like,
- 30:34Speaker 3: why are you moving? But we want Greg to confirm
- 30:38Speaker 3: that or say, eh, maybe he wasn't. Sometimes he doesn't
- 30:42Speaker 3: quite agree with it, depending on what the tape looks like.
- 30:43Speaker 3: This is the all 22, not the TV copy, for
- 30:46Speaker 3: people that don't seem to understand that. It's actually kind
- 30:48Speaker 3: of funny. Some people still don't get that. Like, they'll
- 30:52Speaker 3: watch the show with Greg, and they still don't understand. Like, wait,
- 30:55Speaker 3: what is he talking about? Because some of the fans
- 30:58Speaker 3: are watching TV copy. You only get one angle. We
- 31:02Speaker 3: get three or four off of all 22. There you go.
- 31:04Speaker 2: There you go.
- 31:05Speaker 3: Good stuff.
- 31:06Speaker 2: Hey, real quick, just want to thank a couple of
- 31:07Speaker 2: Inside the Birds listeners that I met over the weekend
- 31:10Speaker 2: at my daughter's softball tournament. If you know South Philly,
- 31:13Speaker 2: if you're familiar with that area, they have a great
- 31:15Speaker 2: baseball softball youth program, EOM, Edward O'Malley. We played them Saturday.
- 31:20Speaker 2: The coaching staff said that they love Inside the Birds.
- 31:23Speaker 2: So very classy team. Great, well-coached team.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Awesome team. The whole organization is awesome, so we thank
- 31:28Speaker 1: them for listening. There was another coach. He said JB
- 31:31Speaker 1: was his name. This is from a different team.
- 31:32Speaker 2: He said, I'm an OG member, listener of Inside the Birds,
- 31:37Speaker 2: so I want to shout out JB. I believe his
- 31:39Speaker 2: team was the stars, but really nice to– always great
- 31:42Speaker 2: to go out in the public and hear people.
- 31:44Speaker 1: They love Inside the Birds, so we love you all back.
- 31:47Speaker 2: That's going to do it for this edition of the
- 31:48Speaker 2: Inside the Birds post-game show.
- 31:51Speaker 1: For Adam Kaplan, I'm Jeff Mosher. We'll catch you all
- 31:54Speaker 1: on the next one.
