- 1:14Speaker 2: use Movie Meltdown?
- 1:16Speaker 3: Dead people don't snow. Or do they? What's up? Welcome
- 1:29Speaker 3: to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian. And joining me this episode
- 1:33Speaker 3: via the magic of the internet is.
- 1:35Speaker 1: I'm Sam.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Thank you for being here.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Sure, no problem, Brian. Thanks for asking.
- 1:41Speaker 3: And it's kind of your fault this time.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Right, right, right.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Is it? Oh, yeah. I said let's record, but then
- 1:47Speaker 3: you got us in this boat that we're currently floating
- 1:50Speaker 3: at sea, lost at sea, somewhere under the sea. Anyway.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Right, right, right, right.
- 1:58Speaker 3: I figured, knowing how things usually go with us, specifically
- 2:03Speaker 3: when we're supposed to focus, I'm using air quotes, focus.
- 2:06Speaker 3: focus on a movie, one particular movie, we better not
- 2:10Speaker 3: distract ourselves with the top of the show of their
- 2:13Speaker 3: movie talk or we'll never get to our movie.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Right.
- 2:15Speaker 3: So we'll just get rolling and I'm sure we'll sidetrack
- 2:19Speaker 3: ourselves along the way, but that's fine. That's fine. I
- 2:22Speaker 3: did want to say beforehand, this is sort of interesting
- 2:26Speaker 3: for the two of us because, you know, normally we
- 2:29Speaker 3: just sit in our house and watch stuff and then
- 2:30Speaker 3: talk about it. But this time, We went out into
- 2:33Speaker 3: the world.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Into the actual biosphere.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Both of us left the house and went out amongst people.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 2:45Speaker 3: And saw a movie in a theater.
- 2:47Speaker 1: A movie in a theater. I had my aluminum foil
- 2:49Speaker 1: hat on. I had my dishwashing gloves on with my
- 2:55Speaker 1: Windex and everything. Just a regular old Tuesday for you.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Here's the thing. I found out that in Seven Miles Away,
- 3:05Speaker 1: there's an older movie theater that I've always enjoyed going to.
- 3:10Speaker 1: And it's called the Aurora Cineplex. And I've had many
- 3:14Speaker 1: people that I've known work at this place. But this
- 3:17Speaker 1: was not where I grew up and everything. But I've
- 3:19Speaker 1: just always enjoyed this one because it was more of
- 3:21Speaker 1: an old school theater experience. And they still do early movies.
- 3:25Speaker 1: They still do early movies on a Tuesday. All right.
- 3:28Speaker 1: They still they do movies, early movies all week. All right.
- 3:32Speaker 1: It's crazy.
- 3:33Speaker 3: I mean, retirees got to have something to do.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Dude, absolutely.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 3:37Speaker 1: God bless. God bless.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Literally, the guys that used to be on the show,
- 3:42Speaker 3: I hardly ever see him anymore. But like that all
- 3:44Speaker 3: worked at a specific theater. Their stories, it was funny.
- 3:49Speaker 3: That's all there was. Most of the week, maybe some
- 3:54Speaker 3: late night shows during the week, but weekends were normal
- 3:58Speaker 3: teenagers and kids and cool kids and people just hanging
- 4:01Speaker 3: out on the town. During the week, specifically in the daytime,
- 4:07Speaker 3: nothing but old retired people that have nothing to do
- 4:10Speaker 3: all day. And they just go sit there and may
- 4:14Speaker 3: or may not fall asleep in the theater. Oh, wait, no,
- 4:15Speaker 3: that's me. Okay, never mind. If only I was retired.
- 4:20Speaker 3: That is what I think every day when I leave
- 4:22Speaker 3: the house. I'm like, why? Why can't I just stay
- 4:24Speaker 3: home and do whatever the hell I want?
- 4:27Speaker 1: Do my projects.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I have a lot of stuff to do. Don't
- 4:31Speaker 3: get me wrong. I made up a lot of work
- 4:33Speaker 3: for myself to do.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 4:35Speaker 3: I overwhelm myself sometimes with things that no one else
- 4:38Speaker 3: cares about that I've convinced myself I have to do.
- 4:41Speaker 1: To do this is this is the things these are
- 4:44Speaker 1: the important things right right and once we retire and
- 4:47Speaker 1: everything we will have time to do all these little
- 4:49Speaker 1: projects you know um i mean it.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Is kind of my my thinking i convince myself these
- 4:55Speaker 3: are important and i think work is not important like.
- 4:59Speaker 1: I feel like i'm right i know i know that's
- 5:01Speaker 1: yeah this is total drag total drag Yeah, I don't know.
- 5:06Speaker 1: I agree. I agree. These things in our brains seem
- 5:09Speaker 1: much more important than the actual reality that we are
- 5:12Speaker 1: actually living in. But I think they are equal. It's
- 5:16Speaker 1: the yin-yang. But this movie theater has a $ 6. 50 movie
- 5:24Speaker 1: if you get there before noon. And I remember those things.
- 5:27Speaker 1: At the theater I worked at, we had those. They
- 5:29Speaker 1: were a pain in the butt. But uh, to, to
- 5:32Speaker 1: work during, but, uh, but, uh, but, uh, but, but,
- 5:35Speaker 1: you know, that in the late movie, but, but $ 6
- 5:39Speaker 1: and 50 cents is a pretty good deal to see
- 5:41Speaker 1: a movie that, uh, when nobody cares about movies, it's
- 5:45Speaker 1: just like, it's just like, Hey, we gotta, we gotta
- 5:49Speaker 1: adjust the, we gotta make the rent, you know? So let's,
- 5:51Speaker 1: let's get people in somehow, you know? So anyway, God
- 5:54Speaker 1: bless them every day of the week. They have a
- 5:56Speaker 1: 10 AM showing of something. And it's pretty darn cheap. So, yeah,
- 6:01Speaker 1: we both ventured out into the world.
- 6:04Speaker 3: As far as my theater, let me ask you this
- 6:07Speaker 3: about yours, because this is I realized I mean, I
- 6:10Speaker 3: guess I've always sort of known this, but so much
- 6:13Speaker 3: so I was realizing it there and other places recently.
- 6:17Speaker 3: My favorite aspect of the theater I go to now,
- 6:19Speaker 3: which is a big chain and like attached to a
- 6:22Speaker 3: freaking mall and like the most generic homogenized theater ever. Right.
- 6:27Speaker 3: But the reason I go to that one was I
- 6:29Speaker 3: ended up there like years ago just for something for
- 6:32Speaker 3: the show and went, oh, look at this new feature.
- 6:35Speaker 3: So does yours involve you interacting with humans?
- 6:40Speaker 1: Well, it does.
- 6:41Speaker 2: It does.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Yeah. What sort of old timey place are you going to?
- 6:46Speaker 3: Because I realize now it's like the reason I like
- 6:49Speaker 3: to go to this one is it's got the whole
- 6:51Speaker 3: website and I go to the website. Not only do
- 6:54Speaker 3: I buy the ticket, I pick out my seat well
- 6:56Speaker 3: beforehand before the other nerds come along and take all
- 6:59Speaker 3: the good spots. Right. So I get my spot that
- 7:01Speaker 3: I like early. Then I don't have to worry about
- 7:05Speaker 3: getting there for a seat. So I leave the house
- 7:07Speaker 3: like 10 minutes before I need to be there because
- 7:09Speaker 3: it's right up the jump on the highway and I'm there.
- 7:12Speaker 3: And then I get there, I walk in, I go
- 7:15Speaker 3: to another giant computer screen, type in my thing and
- 7:18Speaker 3: it spits out a ticket. And then I didn't come
- 7:21Speaker 3: in contact with some weird ticket person. And then I
- 7:24Speaker 3: get up there and the ticket guy at the door
- 7:26Speaker 3: just scans it. And half the time they're dumb kids
- 7:28Speaker 3: that don't even talk to me. So they just beep
- 7:31Speaker 3: and I walk past them and I go sit in
- 7:33Speaker 3: the theater and I find the seat based on my
- 7:35Speaker 3: number and no humans were really spoken to. or no
- 7:40Speaker 3: interactions took place and I was like no wonder I
- 7:43Speaker 3: like this so much I am detached from all humanity
- 7:46Speaker 3: and I found a way to go see movies like.
- 7:49Speaker 1: That that's right it's basically like being at home but
- 7:52Speaker 1: there's just somebody who kind of passed by the theater
- 7:58Speaker 1: closest to my house is one of those terrible movie
- 8:01Speaker 1: tavern places you know you can eat ribs that's trouble
- 8:05Speaker 1: dude Dude, I hate it.
- 8:06Speaker 3: I don't even trust the popcorn people anymore.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Dude, absolutely. No, I hate it.
- 8:11Speaker 3: I love popcorn, but I don't trust other people and
- 8:14Speaker 3: their food eating around me.
- 8:15Speaker 1: No, not at all, man. It has ruined so many
- 8:18Speaker 1: movie-going experiences for me. When the person next to me
- 8:21Speaker 1: is chomping away at something, I'm just like, oh, jeez.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Just the chewing noises are like, can't be drowned out.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Thanks for getting the pot roast. Yeah, I know.
- 8:33Speaker 1: I'm just like, you know. It's just gross. It's just gross.
- 8:40Speaker 1: I don't know this guy. And, you know, I'm trying
- 8:44Speaker 1: to watch like some Scarlett Johansson movie.
- 8:48Speaker 3: We'll get back to that. Gross.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Just nasty. You know. And anyway. Anyway. So what?
- 8:56Speaker 3: OK.
- 8:57Speaker 1: The point was the. it is so detached at that
- 9:01Speaker 1: movie theater. I just know people who go early morning,
- 9:06Speaker 1: early weekend mornings and they don't have anybody there. You
- 9:10Speaker 1: just walk in and you don't see anybody. And so
- 9:15Speaker 1: it's just became this guy's a regular thing. Just don't,
- 9:19Speaker 1: Walk in, walk into the movie, you know, because it's
- 9:22Speaker 1: like a ghost town.
- 9:23Speaker 3: I mean, there may not be anybody running it at all.
- 9:26Speaker 3: They should put just like a big VCR controls on
- 9:29Speaker 3: the wall. So when you get in the theater, you
- 9:30Speaker 3: just walk up and hit a big play button and
- 9:33Speaker 3: then sit down and start your movie. And then like,
- 9:35Speaker 3: you're good.
- 9:36Speaker 1: It should just be like an automat where, you know, you,
- 9:41Speaker 1: it should be like connected to your cell phone. And
- 9:43Speaker 1: if you walk into the building, you're charged, you know. Cha-ching! Cha-ching!
- 9:48Speaker 1: And then, you know, but I mean, it's like crazy. So,
- 9:53Speaker 1: you know, I mean, these movie theaters are so understaffed now.
- 9:57Speaker 1: When I went to go see Furiosa, it was like
- 9:59Speaker 1: a Friday night. and it was like one person I.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Mean I went surprisingly I've gone I went for a
- 10:09Speaker 3: long time and didn't see anything like I think whatever
- 10:12Speaker 3: the last thing we talked about on the show probably
- 10:15Speaker 3: one of the weird superhero movies that I was kind
- 10:17Speaker 3: of meh on like a lot of lately but it
- 10:20Speaker 3: was probably the last thing I saw. So up until
- 10:22Speaker 3: a few weeks ago, I hadn't seen anything in a
- 10:24Speaker 3: while in the theater. And then all of a sudden
- 10:27Speaker 3: I've seen, I've been there like three times lately, which
- 10:29Speaker 3: is really weird.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:30Speaker 3: So I just went yesterday and like, it was to
- 10:33Speaker 3: me the biggest movie in the world right now. And
- 10:35Speaker 3: yet I went in my entire row was empty, which
- 10:40Speaker 3: don't get me wrong. I was so excited to not
- 10:42Speaker 3: have to be like awkwardly sitting really close to a
- 10:45Speaker 3: person that like doesn't really want you there and vice
- 10:48Speaker 3: versa so like no offense i'm you know they can
- 10:51Speaker 3: live their life but i don't need to be that
- 10:53Speaker 3: close to you so yeah i got there and i
- 10:55Speaker 3: was just like oh no weird awkward armwrestling going yeah
- 11:00Speaker 3: messing with your seats up and down back and forth
- 11:02Speaker 3: yeah i was just like there were other people in
- 11:06Speaker 3: the theater surprisingly but you know my whole row was
- 11:10Speaker 3: empty and stayed empty the whole time i love that
- 11:14Speaker 3: yeah Don't get me wrong, I enjoy that. I don't
- 11:16Speaker 3: think the theater or the movie industry likes these facts,
- 11:19Speaker 3: but I like it.
- 11:21Speaker 2: It's fine.
- 11:22Speaker 1: It's like Omega Man, you know? It's like Charlton Heston
- 11:24Speaker 1: watching Woodstock.
- 11:25Speaker 3: I'm gonna watch Woodstock now. Give my own commentary and
- 11:30Speaker 3: nobody's gonna care because everybody's dead. Yeah, yeah.
- 11:34Speaker 1: I think that's sort of the way it feels like
- 11:36Speaker 1: at movies now.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Well, my life in general. Well, that's what I was thinking.
- 11:42Speaker 3: It wasn't because I did that with my movie ticket.
- 11:44Speaker 3: And then later, as I was getting my food, and
- 11:47Speaker 3: I think most of my food choices now are like,
- 11:50Speaker 3: there's at least two that I hit regularly. One of
- 11:53Speaker 3: which I never come in contact with people. It literally
- 11:55Speaker 3: is automatic. I love the magic door that opens when
- 11:58Speaker 3: I get there and I get my food and I
- 12:00Speaker 3: don't talk to the dumb kid at the counter and
- 12:02Speaker 3: I walk right the fuck out. It's like the greatest
- 12:05Speaker 3: thing ever. And there's another one that I go in
- 12:07Speaker 3: regularly and they have the big screen on there and
- 12:10Speaker 3: I go and I type it in and I don't
- 12:11Speaker 3: say my thing to my person that takes my order
- 12:13Speaker 3: because nobody takes my order and I get the right
- 12:15Speaker 3: thing because I typed it in myself. The most there
- 12:18Speaker 3: is they hand it to me. Sometimes they don't even
- 12:21Speaker 3: say anything. They just sit it on the counter and
- 12:23Speaker 3: the kid's like, and then i take it and happily
- 12:29Speaker 3: walk out the door and get away from them.
- 12:31Speaker 1: And they got their earbuds in you know everywhere you
- 12:33Speaker 1: go they don't even listen until you're like jamming out
- 12:37Speaker 1: their spotify account.
- 12:40Speaker 3: Actually i had that yesterday but it was a grandma
- 12:43Speaker 3: and she had these big old like freaking beats looking
- 12:46Speaker 3: ones on like they were these giant ones and she
- 12:49Speaker 3: was sitting there Just sort of head bobbing like she
- 12:52Speaker 3: was rocking out. And I was like, all right, grandma,
- 12:55Speaker 3: you go for it.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Technology is a ruined people.
- 13:01Speaker 3: I don't know if it's as impressive as the second
- 13:05Speaker 3: when I went to get my food at the place
- 13:07Speaker 3: where I didn't interact with anyone. There was another grandma
- 13:10Speaker 3: equally as old. But I kind of had to feel
- 13:13Speaker 3: bad because it was grandma and her like 14 year
- 13:16Speaker 3: old grandson. I'm assuming just guessing these. But the fact
- 13:20Speaker 3: that he was with her and yet she was wearing
- 13:22Speaker 3: one of those denim caps with sparkly words on it.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Oh, no.
- 13:26Speaker 3: And the sparkly words said juicy. oh no and i
- 13:30Speaker 3: was like oh that poor kid like if she wants
- 13:33Speaker 3: to wear that i guess that's up to her cool
- 13:35Speaker 3: but the fact that your grandson is with you man
- 13:39Speaker 3: that is uncool for him what the hell are you
- 13:43Speaker 3: doing grandma juicy out of the town i'm assuming you
- 13:49Speaker 3: also wore your juicy hat when you I swear I'm
- 13:56Speaker 3: not making that up. That was yesterday.
- 13:58Speaker 1: That was yesterday. It is kind of like living in
- 14:04Speaker 1: the zombie apocalypse, but the zombies all just kind of suck,
- 14:07Speaker 1: you know?
- 14:09Speaker 3: The zombies are just the most ridiculous assemblage of humans
- 14:13Speaker 3: that are left roaming the Earth. Yeah, that's what it is.
- 14:16Speaker 3: You don't really want to interact with them, but you
- 14:19Speaker 3: can't look away. Car wreck that they all are. And
- 14:22Speaker 3: I'm kind of throwing myself in that mix. But yeah,
- 14:25Speaker 3: the car wreck that is humans at this point, I'm
- 14:28Speaker 3: just like, I can't look away. I just... I feel
- 14:32Speaker 3: so bad for this dumb kid. Yeah.
- 14:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 14:34Speaker 1: It's kind of like a carny show. It's kind of
- 14:36Speaker 1: like every time you walk out, it's kind of like
- 14:38Speaker 1: walking into a carnival, you know, it's like the, the
- 14:41Speaker 1: three ring circus of humanity that it's become. And it's
- 14:44Speaker 1: all just kind of like, uh, Kishi, uh, tacky, uh, ridiculous, uh,
- 14:50Speaker 1: surface level candy wrapper. Uh, it's, it's like the culture
- 14:53Speaker 1: has become a, a deep fried Twinkie. You know, I was.
- 14:57Speaker 3: Thinking of John Waters movie. It is. Dude.
- 15:01Speaker 1: That's exactly what it is, man. It's like John Waters
- 15:06Speaker 1: got into the water supply, like the crazies. Literally, Waters.
- 15:11Speaker 1: And the water supply.
- 15:12Speaker 3: Something's in the John Waters. Right, exactly.
- 15:16Speaker 1: And it's just turned everybody into zombies, John Waters zombies.
- 15:20Speaker 1: And it's very true. No, all right. So two things.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Okay.
- 15:25Speaker 1: All right.
- 15:26Speaker 3: Whew. All right.
- 15:27Speaker 1: So we're getting warmed up now. So we're the movie
- 15:31Speaker 1: theater experience. All right.
- 15:33Speaker 3: All right.
- 15:33Speaker 1: I go there at 10. I have to talk to
- 15:35Speaker 1: two teenagers. Okay. All right.
- 15:38Speaker 3: All right.
- 15:39Speaker 1: But it was kind of cool because, you know, ever
- 15:42Speaker 1: since COVID. I have lost my ability to speak to people.
- 15:46Speaker 1: All right.
- 15:47Speaker 3: And so barely there before.
- 15:50Speaker 1: It was not my strong suit before. And then so,
- 15:53Speaker 1: you know, you go up there and you just sort
- 15:55Speaker 1: of try to talk and everything. And all your words
- 15:58Speaker 1: come out dyslexic and everything. And they're going like, oh,
- 16:01Speaker 1: you can see that the people that are selling you
- 16:04Speaker 1: the ticket or giving you your ticket. Or something. Whatever. Oh,
- 16:08Speaker 1: that's another thing I ought to mention. But the people
- 16:11Speaker 1: that are selling your ticket, they're going like, aw, he
- 16:13Speaker 1: probably lives in a person-enabled group home.
- 16:18Speaker 3: You know? I was like, they're just like, aw, they
- 16:21Speaker 3: let dad out by himself.
- 16:23Speaker 1: They let dad out, or they're like, aw.
- 16:25Speaker 3: The kids need to keep a better leash on this boy.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:28Speaker 3: Obviously, they know what's going on, but he is clueless.
- 16:31Speaker 1: It's like you try to say like, hey, I just
- 16:34Speaker 1: try to say something, but it comes out all backwards
- 16:36Speaker 1: and forwards and upside and downside. You're going like, wow,
- 16:40Speaker 1: I think the message got lost when I was like,
- 16:44Speaker 1: it's OK, man. Hey, buddy. It's like, hey, buddy. Hey, buddy.
- 16:48Speaker 3: We'll get you some popcorn. It'll be all right.
- 16:51Speaker 1: It's going to be. Hey, buddy. So you get to
- 16:52Speaker 1: go see your movie today.
- 16:54Speaker 3: Oh, that's great.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Oh, you like the crow.
- 16:57Speaker 3: What are you, like an old man or something?
- 16:59Speaker 5: Oh, yeah, okay.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Sit down right here.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Do you like the crow? Do you need us to
- 17:03Speaker 1: walk you to your seat? It's kind of spooky here.
- 17:07Speaker 1: I know you're very gothy.
- 17:09Speaker 3: You're into it.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Shut up!
- 17:12Speaker 3: I just came from Hot Topic.
- 17:13Speaker 1: Shut up.
- 17:14Speaker 3: Right.
- 17:15Speaker 1: I'm just like, anyway. But they actually handed me an
- 17:17Speaker 1: actual paper ticket, which I haven't had in like the
- 17:20Speaker 1: last 20 times. I still get mine. No, I never
- 17:23Speaker 1: get mine. See, I do everything through an app. And
- 17:26Speaker 1: so they just scan the barcode on your phone, right?
- 17:29Speaker 3: I don't like phone scanning. Dude.
- 17:31Speaker 1: I used to collect stubs, you know, and everything.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Exactly. That's why I like mine. Container of them sitting
- 17:38Speaker 3: right over there, right now.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Absolutely. Well, I've got a new one now. I haven't
- 17:41Speaker 1: had one in forever. And I looked at it and
- 17:43Speaker 1: like a silent, stoic tear ran down my face going like,
- 17:47Speaker 1: I remember. Oh, it's like Pinhead at the end of
- 17:50Speaker 1: Hellraiser 2.
- 17:52Speaker 3: It's just like, I remember. I think the new option
- 17:58Speaker 3: is every time you have them scan that phone, you
- 18:01Speaker 3: take that phone and you go throw it in a bowl.
- 18:05Speaker 3: and you gotta get a new phone because it's like
- 18:08Speaker 3: this is my memory of when i went to see
- 18:10Speaker 3: the crow so i can't use this phone ever again
- 18:13Speaker 3: it's just remind me of that wonderful decision i made
- 18:15Speaker 3: when i went to see the crow.
- 18:16Speaker 1: The wonderful wonderful time i had you know it's.
- 18:19Speaker 3: Stacked on top of all these other phones that i
- 18:22Speaker 3: went to the theater and that's right so that's it
- 18:25Speaker 3: i mean they're kind of disposable at this point anyway
- 18:27Speaker 3: so you just go and it's your ticket stub you
- 18:29Speaker 3: Hopefully they don't tear it in half because that's going
- 18:31Speaker 3: to be a mess.
- 18:33Speaker 1: They're so cheap now because they put up suicide nets
- 18:35Speaker 1: around the factories to catch the people jumping to their
- 18:39Speaker 1: deaths because they can't stand working there anymore.
- 18:41Speaker 3: I was going to say, can you blame them really?
- 18:44Speaker 3: As we've discussed, work is dumb.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Work sucks. But what was it? The third thing. At
- 18:52Speaker 1: the movie theater I went to, no assigned seating. So
- 18:55Speaker 1: you just go. What year is this? wild, wild country.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Even if you go into the app, they will not
- 19:04Speaker 1: let you pick a pre-seat and everything. They're going like, look,
- 19:08Speaker 1: you're just going to have to get there early, like
- 19:10Speaker 1: a freaking adult okay and get the seat you want
- 19:13Speaker 1: 1950s or something like it's about 1950s gotta go see
- 19:17Speaker 1: me one of the pictures go to the picture show
- 19:20Speaker 1: i gotta get dressed up there go i gotta get
- 19:22Speaker 1: there to see the newsreel cartoons this is how we
- 19:30Speaker 1: live our lives that's it that's it so i was
- 19:33Speaker 1: telling you when we were planning the uh planning this episode,
- 19:37Speaker 1: that this is going to be early, and it's kind
- 19:39Speaker 1: of like the old men sitting at the Hardee's, you know,
- 19:43Speaker 1: drinking their coffee and eating their stuff.
- 19:44Speaker 3: I mean, I got my coffee, so that's a given.
- 19:47Speaker 1: You know, we've got a Bojangles. Do you have a
- 19:49Speaker 1: Bojangles name? you in your town?
- 19:51Speaker 3: I've watched so many Bojangles close down in my area. Like,
- 19:56Speaker 3: I couldn't tell you if there's one currently, but I
- 20:00Speaker 3: remember growing up there was one, and then that one closed,
- 20:03Speaker 3: and then I thought they went away and weren't even
- 20:05Speaker 3: in town anymore, and then more came back, and those closed. And, like,
- 20:09Speaker 3: now I don't know if a new one's opened. But,
- 20:11Speaker 3: I mean, is Bojangles your usual breakfast stop? No, it's not.
- 20:15Speaker 1: It's not.
- 20:16Speaker 4: It's not.
- 20:16Speaker 2: It's not.
- 20:16Speaker 3: I was just trying to figure out, like, give me
- 20:18Speaker 3: some dirty rice and a coffee. Right, right.
- 20:21Speaker 1: It's nine in the morning. I need heartburn now. I
- 20:25Speaker 1: need a nuclear-powered chicken biscuit, all right? Nuclear-powered chicken biscuit
- 20:35Speaker 1: is going to be my band name.
- 20:40Speaker 3: We're going to have practice on Tuesdays.
- 20:42Speaker 1: It's going to be awesome. Practice on Tuesday. Be there
- 20:44Speaker 1: if you're serious about The Rock, right?
- 20:46Speaker 3: Well, if you're not there, you are out of the band. Out.
- 20:49Speaker 1: First time, out. Well, at the Bojangles near my house, though,
- 20:55Speaker 1: I've been there enough to know that there is like
- 20:57Speaker 1: this gaggle of old retirees, you know, that meet there
- 21:02Speaker 1: in the morning and I guess discuss, you know, the
- 21:05Speaker 1: politics of the day, you know. But I've seen that
- 21:07Speaker 1: at the Hardee's. I've seen that at the Bojangles, you know.
- 21:11Speaker 1: But there are certain places where they just sort of
- 21:13Speaker 1: meet up, and I don't know how they find each other,
- 21:16Speaker 1: I guess.
- 21:18Speaker 3: Message boards?
- 21:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess. Craigslist?
- 21:24Speaker 3: Oh, God.
- 21:25Speaker 1: Need old man to eat biscuits with.
- 21:28Speaker 3: Probably an index card thumbtack to a cork board somewhere at, like,
- 21:32Speaker 3: an old-timey grocery store or something. Like, I think they're
- 21:36Speaker 3: really old school.
- 21:37Speaker 1: I think it is. I think it is. Yeah, yeah.
- 21:39Speaker 1: And there's like a community center in the town nearby. So,
- 21:42Speaker 1: you know, they may say like, hey, want to eat
- 21:44Speaker 1: biscuits with me?
- 21:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I feel like that's a normal thing. I'm rarely
- 21:50Speaker 3: at a McDonald's, especially in the morning. But the few
- 21:52Speaker 3: times I've been around, like there is just like an
- 21:54Speaker 3: old crew and all they get is like a freaking
- 21:57Speaker 3: coffee and just sit there because they have nothing to
- 21:59Speaker 3: do because the movies don't start till 11. Like we
- 22:04Speaker 3: have nothing to do. We're up at 4.30. I'm going
- 22:08Speaker 3: to go get my coffee and sit there until the
- 22:09Speaker 3: movie opens, and then I'm going to take a nap
- 22:11Speaker 3: in the movies, and then I'll come home and do
- 22:13Speaker 3: some gardening.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Oh, dude, you just described basically my perfect day. So, yeah,
- 22:19Speaker 1: I think I'm ready for that, man. I think I'm
- 22:21Speaker 1: ready to do it.
- 22:22Speaker 3: I mean, I want the retiring, but I got other
- 22:24Speaker 3: crap I got to do. Yeah.
- 22:26Speaker 2: Oh, I know.
- 22:27Speaker 1: I know. I know. I mean, yeah.
- 22:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:28Speaker 1: Sure.
- 22:28Speaker 3: Sure. Sure.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Well, you know, you've still got ambition, Brian. You know,
- 22:31Speaker 1: that's been sapped out of me.
- 22:35Speaker 3: How ambitious do you have to be that your life
- 22:38Speaker 3: plan is to build this cyberpunk Lego world I'm working
- 22:41Speaker 3: on over here? But, you know, hey, that's just goals.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Life goals.
- 22:46Speaker 1: I think. if you can have the goals that you
- 22:49Speaker 1: had when you were, you know, pre-puberty, you know, and
- 22:56Speaker 1: can now, hey, now I've got the power of adulthood,
- 23:00Speaker 1: you know.
- 23:01Speaker 3: The power of credit cards.
- 23:03Speaker 1: The power of credit cards to actually see some of
- 23:06Speaker 1: this stuff through. Yeah, I think that's a great thing.
- 23:09Speaker 1: I think it's a really cool thing. It makes me
- 23:13Speaker 1: want to segue into a show I've been watching, but
- 23:15Speaker 1: I don't want to completely destroy it. I don't want
- 23:20Speaker 1: to destroy this episode. I think we're so close to
- 23:23Speaker 1: actually talking about the movie that we're here to talk about.
- 23:26Speaker 3: Towards it and that's what i was yeah that's what
- 23:29Speaker 3: i was thinking that was my lead into it is
- 23:31Speaker 3: because i remember being at the theater to see the
- 23:35Speaker 3: crow and i'm walking down the aisle while past all
- 23:39Speaker 3: because it was at the very end in this little
- 23:41Speaker 3: shoebox sized one because nobody was going to see the
- 23:43Speaker 3: crow and i'm walking down the aisle past all the
- 23:46Speaker 3: other open doors and And I'm like, looking at all
- 23:49Speaker 3: the other movies I could be going to. And I
- 23:54Speaker 3: was like, what the hell was he thinking with this idea?
- 23:57Speaker 1: Dude, dude, listen, listen, listen.
- 23:59Speaker 3: I don't regret it, but it was funny because I
- 24:02Speaker 3: literally was walking by going, oh, I haven't seen that one. Ooh,
- 24:05Speaker 3: look what's in there. I haven't seen that either. I
- 24:07Speaker 3: should probably be, I guess I gotta go see The Crow.
- 24:10Speaker 1: I walk by Alien Romulus, I'm going like, man, I
- 24:15Speaker 1: don't know if I'm going to be able to get.
- 24:16Speaker 3: Why am I not watching that?
- 24:17Speaker 1: Why am I not giving this freaking franchise another freaking chance?
- 24:23Speaker 3: As you should.
- 24:24Speaker 1: It has been disappointing since 1991, but I'm going to
- 24:30Speaker 1: keep going, even after Covenant, you know, basically made me
- 24:34Speaker 1: swear off movies for a month, you know?
- 24:36Speaker 3: I'm on board with the first four. The last two
- 24:40Speaker 3: are weird as hell, but interesting nonetheless. But yeah, anything
- 24:44Speaker 3: from the let's Prometheus this bullshit and keep on rolling.
- 24:47Speaker 3: I'm like, oh, Ridley, what have you done?
- 24:52Speaker 1: So it's funny that.
- 24:53Speaker 3: The next one that like somebody actually cared about and
- 24:55Speaker 3: thought was potentially good has nothing to do with Ridley.
- 24:59Speaker 3: He did two that nobody wanted to watch. And then
- 25:02Speaker 3: like some other kid comes along. He's like, oh, no, look,
- 25:05Speaker 3: old man, get out of the way. You don't know
- 25:06Speaker 3: what you're doing with this alien franchise.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Yeah. He's not wrong. You've got to give it to
- 25:11Speaker 1: the fans at a certain point, you know, because the
- 25:14Speaker 1: people that created it, well, I mean, we can go
- 25:17Speaker 1: into prequel conversation here, but sometimes the creators have moved
- 25:22Speaker 1: on philosophically and they now feel like they're big shots
- 25:27Speaker 1: and they have to, you know, vent out. their life
- 25:31Speaker 1: views into.
- 25:33Speaker 3: I think they have to claim it.
- 25:34Speaker 1: Like, this was mine.
- 25:36Speaker 3: I don't like whether Doofus is making my movie. I
- 25:40Speaker 3: started this franchise, and I'm coming back to run it
- 25:43Speaker 3: into the ground.
- 25:44Speaker 1: The ground. Run it into... Because he's not.
- 25:46Speaker 3: A terrible director, like I've liked.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Oh, come on. Come on. He's great.
- 25:49Speaker 3: What was the last duel? Was that him? I can't remember.
- 25:53Speaker 3: Whatever the one is with, you know, Kylo Ren is
- 25:55Speaker 3: a knight.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Oh, right.
- 25:57Speaker 3: That was... good like that was really entertaining and surprisingly
- 26:00Speaker 3: well put together and he's solid he's still decent yeah
- 26:04Speaker 3: i haven't watched the other stuff that he's done he
- 26:07Speaker 3: did like two that same year but no that's the
- 26:09Speaker 3: one i saw and i.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Was like this is actually good no i think he's
- 26:12Speaker 1: like i've got to like make the movies that tony
- 26:15Speaker 1: scott would have made because i mean it's like he
- 26:18Speaker 1: cranks them out he's like a thousand years old and
- 26:21Speaker 1: he cranks them out man And.
- 26:24Speaker 3: They still have a signature touch, good or bad. It's
- 26:28Speaker 3: not like they're just phoned in bullshit. Whether you like
- 26:32Speaker 3: it or not, it is definitely an auteur kind of
- 26:35Speaker 3: a movie, even when it's a weird story that's totally
- 26:38Speaker 3: different from his other stuff. He still has a weird
- 26:41Speaker 3: touch that makes it a little different that for somebody
- 26:44Speaker 3: just cranking him out shouldn't be that noticeable, but.
- 26:46Speaker 1: It still kind of is. Yeah, no, it's a level of...
- 26:50Speaker 1: Even if I start one and I don't finish it,
- 26:52Speaker 1: you gotta respect the craftsmanship that goes into his movies.
- 26:57Speaker 3: He's still a filmmaker, yeah.
- 26:59Speaker 1: As old as he is, he's doing what he's.
- 27:00Speaker 3: Doing to some extent.
- 27:03Speaker 1: He hasn't made his Ghost of Mars yet.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Oh, we can dream. I don't know. Prometheus is pretty
- 27:10Speaker 3: Ghost of Mars.
- 27:12Speaker 1: Well, okay, okay. I would say Covenant. Of the Alien franchise,
- 27:15Speaker 1: the first two, of course. Part three, I like in
- 27:19Speaker 1: a curiosity way. Part four, no. I just re-watched.
- 27:23Speaker 3: Those two, actually, because it had been so long since
- 27:25Speaker 3: I've seen them. And they're both, again, they're really interesting.
- 27:29Speaker 3: They always got amazing directors.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Always, always.
- 27:32Speaker 3: I have issues with plot and story, but as films,
- 27:35Speaker 3: they're both pretty solid visually.
- 27:38Speaker 1: I'm not a Resurrection fan. I like Winona in it.
- 27:41Speaker 1: And I like Sigourney. I like Sigourney's performance in it.
- 27:47Speaker 1: in part four a lot.
- 27:49Speaker 3: Well, because it's completely different. Like, she's finally had a
- 27:52Speaker 3: chance to do whatever the hell she wants because she's
- 27:55Speaker 3: not technically Ripley. She's a Ripley. But, like, she's not
- 27:59Speaker 3: really the Ripley we know. So she has license to
- 28:02Speaker 3: do whatever. And it's kind of like, oh, well, yeah,
- 28:05Speaker 3: this crazy lady, this weird clone project has gone horribly wrong.
- 28:09Speaker 3: Look at her.
- 28:10Speaker 1: What an amazing... What a great... I mean, I don't
- 28:13Speaker 1: like the movie, but it's like the line... be careful
- 28:19Speaker 1: when you're fighting something that you don't become what you're fighting.
- 28:22Speaker 1: And that is like the perfect like visualization of that,
- 28:27Speaker 1: you know, and just her not even knowing what the
- 28:30Speaker 1: hell she is anymore, you know, is like a great,
- 28:34Speaker 1: it's a great thing. In fact, as soon as we
- 28:36Speaker 1: get off this podcast, I'm going to go watch it again.
- 28:39Speaker 3: Well, I, I just described this on the last tour episode, but,
- 28:44Speaker 3: but just because I hadn't discussed it with you, And
- 28:47Speaker 3: watching the fourth one again, I realized, I'm like, okay,
- 28:50Speaker 3: this is essentially just the Poseidon adventure, but with aliens
- 28:54Speaker 3: running around. Right, yeah.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Because midway into the.
- 28:57Speaker 3: Movie, I'm like, we've got to get from here to
- 29:00Speaker 3: over there. We're going to die here. And along the way,
- 29:04Speaker 3: we've got to traverse all these crazy things. And eventually
- 29:07Speaker 3: we're going to have to swim underwater a long time.
- 29:09Speaker 3: And Shelly Winters is going to save us.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Oh, dude, you're right.
- 29:12Speaker 3: It's exactly like the format was like essentially Poseidon Adventure.
- 29:17Speaker 3: And then at some point, a Giger alien is going
- 29:20Speaker 3: to come along and jab at some tiny mouth into
- 29:22Speaker 3: your brain. Like that's the major difference. But otherwise, it's
- 29:25Speaker 3: not that different plot wise. Dan Hideo will come up
- 29:29Speaker 3: and creep you out with his shoulder hair.
- 29:31Speaker 1: His shoulder hair and then like, hey, reach into his
- 29:33Speaker 1: head and look at his brain and then go like, oh,
- 29:36Speaker 1: I guess I'm dead.
- 29:36Speaker 3: This is a strange performance. Going back and rewatching. it,
- 29:40Speaker 3: it's like he's in a different movie.
- 29:42Speaker 1: That's the problem. It's like it's got this French touch
- 29:46Speaker 1: to it.
- 29:47Speaker 3: It is very French at times.
- 29:49Speaker 1: Yeah, it gets very French.
- 29:51Speaker 3: I like the crazy wheelchair guy because he's awesome in
- 29:53Speaker 3: his other movie.
- 29:54Speaker 1: Oh, it's other stuff. Yeah, yeah.
- 29:57Speaker 3: Yeah, but that guy is super interesting and always making
- 30:01Speaker 3: a weird face, which again is very French, I suppose.
- 30:03Speaker 1: Weird faces. So, we're talking about, we're here to talk
- 30:12Speaker 1: about Alien Romulus. Which only one of us has seen. Alright, no.
- 30:18Speaker 3: Alright. Are we ready to start this episode's movie?
- 30:24Speaker 1: I think so. I think so. Okay, let's do it.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Let's do it.
- 30:27Speaker 2: Get more out of life. Go out to.
- 30:35Speaker 3: A movie.
- 30:42Speaker 4: What's the first thing you liked about me?
- 30:45Speaker 2: I thought that you were quite brilliantly broken.
- 30:51Speaker 1: You feel like my person.
- 30:53Speaker 3: You feel like my person.
- 30:56Speaker 1: What's the worst thing you've ever done?
- 30:59Speaker 3: I saw things.
- 31:01Speaker 1: I shouldn't have seen any of it.
- 31:04Speaker 6: Eric!
- 31:08Speaker 3: Julie! Julie!
- 31:11Speaker 6: Please don't do this!
- 31:23Speaker 3: When someone dies....
- 31:26Speaker 4: A crow carries a soul to the land of the dead.
- 31:30Speaker 4: But sometimes something so bad happens... that the soul cannot rest.
- 31:40Speaker 4: Until you put the wrong things right. You were given
- 31:46Speaker 4: the power of a god.
- 31:52Speaker 1: But you're running out of time to save her. I'm
- 31:58Speaker 1: gonna kill every single one of them. I killed you.
- 32:05Speaker 2: Yeah, you did.
- 32:08Speaker 1: We have a problem.
- 32:09Speaker 4: It came for us.
- 32:16Speaker 2: First impulse.
- 32:18Speaker 4: Anger. It's not anger.
- 32:25Speaker 3: It's love.
- 32:31Speaker 2: Look at what you've become. You know that love promises
- 32:35Speaker 2: only pain.
- 32:44Speaker 1: You have no idea what hell awaits you.
- 32:48Speaker 3: No, I do.
- 32:55Speaker 4: How many people have you loved?
- 33:39Speaker 3: This out on the town feature is The Crow. Not
- 33:43Speaker 3: that one, the other one. The year is 2024. The
- 33:47Speaker 3: director is Rupert Sanders. And the plot, according to IMDb,
- 33:52Speaker 3: soulmates Eric and Shelly are brutally murdered. Given a chance
- 33:56Speaker 3: to save the love of his life, Eric must sacrifice
- 33:59Speaker 3: himself and traverse the worlds of the living and the dead,
- 34:02Speaker 3: seeking revenge. That's, you know, a pretty generic version of
- 34:07Speaker 3: any Crow story. So, spoiler alert, we're going to ruin
- 34:12Speaker 3: the hell out of this movie, and maybe every other
- 34:15Speaker 3: Crow thing ever created, so just fair warning. Spoilers abound.
- 34:20Speaker 1: Let's just talk about the Crow TV show.
- 34:24Speaker 3: The one thing I have the least amount of knowledge,
- 34:27Speaker 3: because I feel like I saw an episode or two, maybe,
- 34:30Speaker 3: sort of, I don't know. I mean, Damascus, people like
- 34:33Speaker 3: that guy, so it's cool.
- 34:35Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, no, no. All I know about the
- 34:37Speaker 1: Crow TV show, I've watched like one or two episodes
- 34:39Speaker 1: and it was like a TJ Hooker, but with the crow,
- 34:42Speaker 1: you know.
- 34:44Speaker 3: Every episode he's hanging on the front of a car.
- 34:47Speaker 1: It happens. It happens. And it was just like, I'd
- 34:49Speaker 1: like you to meet your new partner. And it was
- 34:52Speaker 1: like the crow. You're going like, oh, Jesus. I think
- 34:56Speaker 1: he's teaming up with the LAPD or something. I don't know.
- 35:00Speaker 1: The Toronto Police Department. The Crow in Canada. Oh, no,
- 35:07Speaker 1: it's New York.
- 35:07Speaker 3: I swear it's New York.
- 35:10Speaker 1: So I got the name of this episode should be Crowback.
- 35:15Speaker 1: It's a crowback.
- 35:17Speaker 3: Ah, never mind. No, you can do it.
- 35:19Speaker 1: You come up. You come up with the title.
- 35:21Speaker 3: When it comes out, it's your fault. Everyone is well
- 35:24Speaker 3: aware now. I mean, I came up with enough cheesy
- 35:28Speaker 3: titles for these episodes.
- 35:29Speaker 1: How can I bastardize.
- 35:31Speaker 3: One thing with the thing we're talking about and call
- 35:33Speaker 3: it a thing that's really cheesy? That's every episode. This
- 35:37Speaker 3: one's your fault. No, no, no, no.
- 35:38Speaker 1: You do something else. Once I said it out loud,
- 35:41Speaker 1: I was like, that's terrible.
- 35:43Speaker 3: Which is why it's very fitting. For what we're about
- 35:46Speaker 3: to do.
- 35:47Speaker 1: Listen. Crow.
- 35:48Speaker 3: Okay. Crow.
- 35:49Speaker 1: Re-Crow. The Crowback. All right. So let's get into it.
- 35:53Speaker 1: I think we talked about.
- 35:55Speaker 3: Do you want to get into the original? Let's do
- 35:58Speaker 3: the original.
- 35:59Speaker 1: That is the thing.
- 36:00Speaker 3: I will say up front. I did re-watch the original.
- 36:03Speaker 1: Me too.
- 36:04Speaker 3: Yesterday. Because I wanted to. I know you were talking
- 36:07Speaker 3: about it. I was like, technically, it's been a long time. Okay.
- 36:09Speaker 3: Here's what made me. This is funny.
- 36:11Speaker 1: Okay.
- 36:11Speaker 3: This is what made me really want to do it.
- 36:14Speaker 3: I saw a pop-up on the goings-on of the internet that,
- 36:18Speaker 3: because of the new one, people were writing into Honest Trailers.
- 36:21Speaker 3: They were like, oh, you gotta do the original Crow.
- 36:23Speaker 3: And so they did it, and I saw it pop up,
- 36:25Speaker 3: and I was like, well, okay, I've seen that one.
- 36:28Speaker 3: I try not to do it with stuff I haven't seen,
- 36:30Speaker 3: because it doesn't make any sense. So I'm like, I've
- 36:31Speaker 3: seen that one. I can watch this. So I turned
- 36:33Speaker 3: it on, and I'm like, basically, they're... They're trying hard
- 36:39Speaker 3: to even get to jokes, really, because it's such hallowed ground.
- 36:45Speaker 3: It is. Most of it is just making fun of Detroit.
- 36:49Speaker 1: Right, right, right.
- 36:50Speaker 3: Look, what is this, a future hellscape? Nah, it's just
- 36:52Speaker 3: Detroit on a Thursday. It's the most ridiculous world that
- 36:58Speaker 3: they live in, and they're just like, nah, it's Detroit.
- 37:01Speaker 3: but uh so that was their main joke and then
- 37:04Speaker 3: like a few things about it but like they didn't
- 37:06Speaker 3: really have much like usually they're brutal and they just
- 37:09Speaker 3: lay into this dumb stuff and like they didn't have
- 37:12Speaker 3: much but my takeaway i'm just looking at it going
- 37:15Speaker 3: oh man look at that scene oh look at the
- 37:17Speaker 3: visuals there oh look at that shot of the city
- 37:19Speaker 3: i was just like the whole time i'm like man
- 37:22Speaker 3: i just want to watch the crow now i was
- 37:24Speaker 3: like your dumb jokes are getting in the way just
- 37:26Speaker 3: play the crow So it made me, so yeah, if
- 37:30Speaker 3: you haven't seen that, you can go watch it. They
- 37:31Speaker 3: don't really have that much material, and it's way better
- 37:35Speaker 3: to just go watch The Crow.
- 37:36Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Well, let me tell you. My experience with
- 37:39Speaker 1: the original Crow, alright, and I did re-watch it like
- 37:44Speaker 1: Sunday morning, okay, Friday night, started the weekend, I started
- 37:48Speaker 1: the Friday night re-watching The Crow, and then Sunday morning,
- 37:53Speaker 1: I watched The Crow remake. So I had a little
- 37:55Speaker 1: 24-hour ours to percolate and rethink the original and then
- 37:59Speaker 1: go see the remake. All right.
- 38:00Speaker 3: See, I did it the other way. I watched the
- 38:02Speaker 3: new one and then went back and was like, okay,
- 38:04Speaker 3: now let's, of the potential questions and issues I might
- 38:08Speaker 3: have with the new one, like let's compare it to
- 38:09Speaker 3: the old one, which I haven't seen him forever. So
- 38:12Speaker 3: for me to kind of balance them out, I went
- 38:14Speaker 3: back and rewatched the original.
- 38:16Speaker 1: Perfect. Perfect. Now the original. Okay. Is hologram.
- 38:21Speaker 4: All right.
- 38:21Speaker 1: What, but it is a time and a place for me. because, uh,
- 38:26Speaker 1: it is the, I saw it senior year of high school.
- 38:30Speaker 1: I was working at a movie theater. I had just
- 38:32Speaker 1: seen like 12 really terrible movies in a row. Okay.
- 38:38Speaker 1: And then, uh, I went to see the crow and
- 38:44Speaker 1: I was like, this has everything I like in one movie.
- 38:49Speaker 1: All right. And, uh, I w it was just such a, uh,
- 38:55Speaker 1: It's such a Gothic landmark and like industrial music. And, uh,
- 39:00Speaker 1: you know, amazing.
- 39:01Speaker 3: That's what I, as I got into this, I was like,
- 39:03Speaker 3: I know all of these songs. Cause I listened to
- 39:05Speaker 3: that soundtrack on a loop. Like I had it and
- 39:08Speaker 3: drove around that. That's where most of my music memories
- 39:11Speaker 3: are is me just driving around back in the early days.
- 39:14Speaker 3: And I had it in there and just looped it
- 39:16Speaker 3: and played them so many times. And all of these
- 39:19Speaker 3: songs are amazing. Yeah, absolutely.
- 39:22Speaker 1: Absolutely. I had that cassette tape and that plus the
- 39:25Speaker 1: Cool World soundtrack. I mean, we're just like.
- 39:27Speaker 3: I just, as I was watching, I was like, I'm
- 39:30Speaker 3: listening to them in the club doing that music. And
- 39:33Speaker 3: I said that I was like this and the cool
- 39:35Speaker 3: world soundtrack is like kind of all you need for
- 39:37Speaker 3: this era of music. Like just cram those two together
- 39:40Speaker 3: and do a multi mix out of it. And like,
- 39:42Speaker 3: you're all good.
- 39:46Speaker 1: You got it, man. It's kind of like when your
- 39:48Speaker 1: brain is still soft and accepting of when you get
- 39:52Speaker 1: into something, you get way into it. I remember after
- 40:01Speaker 1: not really feeling anything for movies for a while, there
- 40:05Speaker 1: is energy to that movie, especially the buildup to his
- 40:13Speaker 1: big confrontation to the bad guys with the thrill kill
- 40:16Speaker 1: cult music going on. All right. You know, um, where
- 40:20Speaker 1: he's playing his, uh, guitar on the thing. And then
- 40:24Speaker 1: he smashes the guitar.
- 40:24Speaker 3: That's maybe the most moody teenager aspect. Yeah. Yeah. Sure.
- 40:28Speaker 3: And then like the sky is almost like a, like
- 40:31Speaker 3: a play, like it is very theatrical and, and yes, stylized.
- 40:35Speaker 3: And like, and again, I'm not complaining. Like that's kind
- 40:38Speaker 3: of the epicness of that scene is like, yeah we've
- 40:41Speaker 3: all been this moody kid like.
- 40:43Speaker 1: We get it yes you're a.
- 40:45Speaker 3: Broody about some shit it might be that you and
- 40:47Speaker 3: your girlfriend got murdered but i also got some shit
- 40:50Speaker 3: going on man all kind of right we feel for
- 40:53Speaker 3: him in that moment we're like yeah yeah the world
- 40:56Speaker 3: sucks right yeah i get it.
- 40:57Speaker 1: Yeah yeah yeah absolutely when you're a moody teen watching
- 41:00Speaker 1: the crow it's like a big cathartic thing you know
- 41:04Speaker 1: it is and uh and uh and that you know
- 41:07Speaker 1: he smashes the guitar and then we start that uh
- 41:10Speaker 1: bird's eye point of view, crow's eye point of view
- 41:12Speaker 1: of flying through the city, and you've got the thrill
- 41:14Speaker 1: cult going on, and then you've got just the most
- 41:18Speaker 1: ridiculous conference table of drugs and guns.
- 41:24Speaker 3: And the weirdest group of people that would never be
- 41:27Speaker 3: sitting at a table together.
- 41:31Speaker 1: And I'm going like, how are they making money off
- 41:33Speaker 1: burning down the city? I don't see where the money
- 41:36Speaker 1: is on that.
- 41:37Speaker 3: I kind of had that thought as I was rewatching.
- 41:39Speaker 3: I was like, wait, where is the... I mean, I
- 41:41Speaker 3: guess you steal, you're looting and then selling stuff?
- 41:45Speaker 1: I don't really know. People are freaked out.
- 41:47Speaker 3: And they need more drugs to deal with Hell Knight?
- 41:50Speaker 3: What are you doing exactly?
- 41:51Speaker 1: Are you taking away people's livelihoods so then they have
- 41:54Speaker 1: to turn to drugs? I mean, I don't know. I
- 41:57Speaker 1: don't really get it. It's just an act of amazing... uh, nihilism,
- 42:02Speaker 1: you know? And so, you know, I mean, it was
- 42:03Speaker 1: a great, when you're a nihilistic teen, it just sort
- 42:06Speaker 1: of makes sense, you know? And, um, but that scene
- 42:10Speaker 1: leading up to that is what I remember in 1994,
- 42:14Speaker 1: just like almost vomiting, you know, that the shit was
- 42:18Speaker 1: so cool, you know? And, uh, and, and so, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 42:23Speaker 1: So big experience, you know? Uh, the, uh, the, my
- 42:27Speaker 1: high school girlfriend walked out of that movie going like,
- 42:29Speaker 1: that was terrible. And it should have been, you were like.
- 42:32Speaker 3: We're done.
- 42:33Speaker 1: We should have just, it was an omen. It was
- 42:37Speaker 1: an omen. It was an omen that, uh, that should
- 42:40Speaker 1: have ended there. But, uh, wouldn't that have been the
- 42:43Speaker 1: funniest reason to break up with somebody because they didn't
- 42:46Speaker 1: like the crow?
- 42:46Speaker 3: No, a very good reason!
- 42:50Speaker 1: I'm sorry, this is over.
- 42:51Speaker 4: This is over.
- 42:52Speaker 3: We're done now. You can leave alone.
- 42:54Speaker 1: Right, right, right.
- 42:55Speaker 3: I'm gonna go paint my face.
- 42:56Speaker 1: Fuck off. That's right, that's right. And, you know, so,
- 43:01Speaker 1: the big thing is, like, you've got, you know, it
- 43:03Speaker 1: just depends on if is it a good movie, uh,
- 43:10Speaker 1: Is it, does it, but does it have David Patrick
- 43:13Speaker 1: Kelly in it? So maybe that adds two stars.
- 43:18Speaker 3: To it.
- 43:19Speaker 1: To the movie? I mean, it's just maybe so well cast,
- 43:22Speaker 1: you know? I mean.
- 43:22Speaker 3: That's what I was thinking this time. I was like,
- 43:24Speaker 3: I think that's a big difference in that 1994 version.
- 43:28Speaker 3: Is like, this could have been just another random, almost
- 43:33Speaker 3: straight to DVD movie of like, oh, it's a revenge movie.
- 43:39Speaker 3: And like... even based on what is, you know, a
- 43:43Speaker 3: sort of beloved comic, but even then there's tons of
- 43:46Speaker 3: stuff they've tried to take from comics and make movies
- 43:49Speaker 3: and it doesn't work. I think that's what raised this
- 43:52Speaker 3: because I mean, our, our director hadn't really done anything
- 43:55Speaker 3: of note at that point. So, I mean, visually it
- 43:57Speaker 3: is cool, but what brings it up several levels? And yes,
- 44:01Speaker 3: I'm going to give a huge amount of credit to Brandon,
- 44:04Speaker 3: but that aside, uh, Like, if you put Michael Wincott
- 44:08Speaker 3: in your movie, especially as a villain in the 90s,
- 44:12Speaker 3: I'm just like, how? How are you going to go wrong? Like,
- 44:15Speaker 3: that dude can say anything, and it sounds amazing. Yeah.
- 44:19Speaker 1: He elevated that last Jordan Peele movie, where you're just
- 44:22Speaker 1: going like, thank God Michael Wincott's in this.
- 44:26Speaker 3: I like that movie anyway, but he adds so much
- 44:29Speaker 3: to it. Like, he is so fun that you don't
- 44:31Speaker 3: expect from Michael Wincott.
- 44:33Speaker 1: No.
- 44:34Speaker 3: He had such an extra layer to it, but... Absolutely.
- 44:37Speaker 3: And again, re-watching it, I forgot how, like, important Ernie
- 44:41Speaker 3: Hudson is. Like, I knew he was in it, but
- 44:43Speaker 3: I'm like, I forgot he's got a good amount of
- 44:45Speaker 3: screen time. Like, he really is, like, a big character
- 44:48Speaker 3: in it. But, I mean, yeah, David Patrick Kelly, again,
- 44:52Speaker 3: these handful of, like, classic moments in cinema and TV,
- 44:57Speaker 3: because his Twin Peaks run is amazing.
- 44:59Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 44:59Speaker 3: So, I mean, you've got him, the... Fucking Gideon, that
- 45:05Speaker 3: John Polito or whatever. Oh, dude. From Miller's Crossing. I'm
- 45:10Speaker 3: just like, yeah, you're again, another one of those. You're
- 45:12Speaker 3: a character actor that like can do no wrong if
- 45:16Speaker 3: you're cast in this role. This is your guy. You
- 45:19Speaker 3: got to be this guy. But when you do it,
- 45:21Speaker 3: you're amazing at it.
- 45:23Speaker 1: Dude, it is really like a perfectly cast movie and
- 45:27Speaker 1: everybody is in the same movie.
- 45:30Speaker 3: Like, even if you're, like, casting minor characters, Tony Todd
- 45:34Speaker 3: barely has any screen time, but I'm just like, whoa, wait,
- 45:37Speaker 3: I forgot, that's Tony Todd! Like, it's, like, the whole
- 45:40Speaker 3: cast is amazing!
- 45:42Speaker 1: Absolutely, and they're all, and they're all, okay, so it's
- 45:46Speaker 1: very cartoony, you know, now that I watched it last Friday,
- 45:51Speaker 1: you know, it's very... But it's kind of nice to
- 45:54Speaker 1: see a low that I didn't realize how low budget
- 45:58Speaker 1: it was, you know, until I watched it recently.
- 46:00Speaker 3: I think it's theatrical, which almost works in its favor.
- 46:03Speaker 3: Like it doesn't have to look real because it seems
- 46:06Speaker 3: like it's a fantasy in a fantasy world. So like,
- 46:10Speaker 3: it's okay that everything looks like it's, you know, not
- 46:13Speaker 3: our reality because it's.
- 46:15Speaker 1: Kind of not. Yeah, absolutely.
- 46:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 46:18Speaker 1: It's kind of nice to see. a low budget comic
- 46:21Speaker 1: book movie like they used to do back in the
- 46:24Speaker 1: 90s before they had all the resources of Disney and
- 46:28Speaker 1: everything and just going like, wow, this is kind of
- 46:30Speaker 1: like a 90s action movie, you know, but it's got
- 46:35Speaker 1: like this level of artificiality to it. And I was
- 46:39Speaker 1: really watching it going like, I didn't realize, you know,
- 46:42Speaker 1: how kind of, hobbled together it is because of brandon's
- 46:46Speaker 1: death where you know there's just so much yeah.
- 46:50Speaker 3: Yeah there's so much that's told through like wordless flashback
- 46:54Speaker 3: yeah like is the entire structure of it definitely the
- 46:58Speaker 3: beginning but even they come back to that in the
- 47:01Speaker 3: end of like how they put together like the whole
- 47:04Speaker 3: journey he's going on and like the weight of what
- 47:06Speaker 3: happened to him is all through flashback And it's all
- 47:09Speaker 3: just sort of editing. Like there's not much you could
- 47:12Speaker 3: have written. It's all pieced together in the editing room
- 47:15Speaker 3: after the fact, which may or may not have been
- 47:18Speaker 3: due to Brandon.
- 47:19Speaker 1: You know, I don't know, but I don't know.
- 47:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 47:21Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 47:21Speaker 3: It's very oddly structured looking at it now, but again,
- 47:25Speaker 3: probably for very real world reasons.
- 47:28Speaker 1: Absolutely. Well, I didn't get like, That whole thing after
- 47:32Speaker 1: he crawls out of the grave, you know, and then
- 47:34Speaker 1: like him walking through the city and then going up
- 47:37Speaker 1: to his own apartment. I mean, that's all body double.
- 47:40Speaker 1: So it's like, you know, it's like, wow, I never
- 47:43Speaker 1: really quite got it. They had to shoot that whole.
- 47:46Speaker 1: So it's really cool that, you know, the first time
- 47:48Speaker 1: I watched or first 20 times I watched that movie,
- 47:50Speaker 1: I never really quite, you know, noticed, you know, or
- 47:53Speaker 1: didn't care. There were scenes.
- 47:55Speaker 3: They did even try to do face replacement for quick shots.
- 48:00Speaker 3: But again, 94, it's probably not going to look great.
- 48:03Speaker 3: So they probably didn't have a ton of that. But yeah,
- 48:06Speaker 3: it's like I don't remember noticing so much. Maybe now
- 48:09Speaker 3: if I really go looking for it, I can find them.
- 48:11Speaker 3: But I don't feel like that's a distraction if you
- 48:13Speaker 3: don't know that that happened and you just watch this.
- 48:16Speaker 3: I don't think you would notice.
- 48:18Speaker 1: What also got me rewatching it was just how crazy
- 48:21Speaker 1: violent it is.
- 48:24Speaker 3: Well, as an adult.
- 48:27Speaker 1: Right, right. As an adult, because I was going like, hey,
- 48:29Speaker 1: I'm probably going, I was telling my kids, you know,
- 48:32Speaker 1: I've got a 12 year old and a 16 year old.
- 48:34Speaker 1: The 16 year old, you know, they're real picky about movies,
- 48:37Speaker 1: you know. But I was going like, hey, you know,
- 48:40Speaker 1: maybe we should watch The Crow. And then if you
- 48:43Speaker 1: like it, we'll go see the remake, you know. And, uh,
- 48:46Speaker 1: they were like, and I was rewatching the.
- 48:49Speaker 3: Surprise me actually. Yeah. Yeah. That's probably every kid at
- 48:52Speaker 3: this point. Yeah. They were like, it was only for
- 48:54Speaker 3: old angry people to go and complain.
- 48:56Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
- 48:57Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 48:57Speaker 1: And so they didn't watch it. I was kind of watching.
- 48:59Speaker 1: I was going like, I'm kind of glad I'm not
- 49:00Speaker 1: watching this with them because it's pretty, it's pretty brutally violent.
- 49:06Speaker 1: I mean, Pilato's death. I was going like, Oh, that's
- 49:10Speaker 1: really terrible. And then like a, uh, you know, just
- 49:14Speaker 1: the shoot-em-ups, you know, it's very John Woo-ish, you know,
- 49:17Speaker 1: kind of mixed martial arts good. going on and everything.
- 49:22Speaker 1: And I was just going like, this is real violent.
- 49:25Speaker 1: And so I'm kind of glad I'm not having to.
- 49:28Speaker 3: See, I don't remember noticing that originally. And like, I
- 49:32Speaker 3: didn't overly... I mean, this time, I just, again, maybe
- 49:35Speaker 3: because I already knew all the kills, but I was
- 49:37Speaker 3: just like, oh, yeah. Like I love Tintin as a
- 49:40Speaker 3: pin cushion. Yeah.
- 49:41Speaker 1: Right.
- 49:41Speaker 3: Awesome.
- 49:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 49:44Speaker 3: So there's other things about it, I guess I was noticing,
- 49:46Speaker 3: but I, I wasn't sidetracked by the violence. I'm just
- 49:50Speaker 3: so numb to violence at this point.
- 49:51Speaker 5: Sure.
- 49:52Speaker 3: Sure. Absolutely.
- 49:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 49:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 49:54Speaker 1: So, so let's, let's get, I guess we can, I
- 49:58Speaker 1: can say that I still love the crow. I do
- 50:00Speaker 1: see some of the, the tears and the seams, you know,
- 50:03Speaker 1: and I think I, I, I think, uh, I think
- 50:08Speaker 1: Brandon Lee is fine. I think he does emote, but
- 50:11Speaker 1: I think it is very, uh, acting school emoting. I'm, I'm,
- 50:16Speaker 1: I'm scrapping on a, uh, an icon. I know, but, uh,
- 50:20Speaker 1: I'll stand by him.
- 50:21Speaker 3: But again, I think he's doing a performance because again,
- 50:25Speaker 3: it's not a real world thing. So like, and he's
- 50:28Speaker 3: dead by the time we meet him essentially. So he's
- 50:31Speaker 3: just real. The character more or less is realizing that, Yeah,
- 50:35Speaker 3: no rules really apply to me. So I can just
- 50:37Speaker 3: walk around and be a weirdo because I'm dead. I
- 50:40Speaker 3: am a weirdo now. So he's just performing in every
- 50:44Speaker 3: one of these little interactions he has with all the guys.
- 50:47Speaker 3: And like so that. Yeah, I think that's part of
- 50:50Speaker 3: it for me watching. I was like, he just knows
- 50:53Speaker 3: he doesn't have to. Again, our complaints of the day
- 50:57Speaker 3: to day run of the mill living your life bullshit.
- 51:00Speaker 3: He doesn't have that anymore. So if you want to
- 51:02Speaker 3: just sit around and laugh at things for no good reason,
- 51:04Speaker 3: because they did bring it up in the Honest Trailer,
- 51:06Speaker 3: that he just laughs all the time. Yeah. Nobody else
- 51:09Speaker 3: is in on the joke. He's just laughing to himself
- 51:12Speaker 3: like a crazy person. Yeah.
- 51:13Speaker 1: He jumps off a building and he's like, hey.
- 51:15Speaker 3: And laughs, because it's hilarious. Yeah. I mean, again, the
- 51:18Speaker 3: rules don't apply to you, so I guess you can
- 51:19Speaker 3: do whatever you want, dude. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 51:21Speaker 1: And it is kind of refreshing to have a guy
- 51:24Speaker 1: who's like life ruined and he's like sad about it
- 51:28Speaker 1: and moody about it and not like, you know, like
- 51:32Speaker 1: the other action movies of the time were like, you know,
- 51:38Speaker 1: Steven Seagal movies and Jean-Claude Van Damme movies. Yeah, they're
- 51:42Speaker 1: just tough guys. Tough guys, and that's it.
- 51:44Speaker 3: You kind of act like a tough guy all the time.
- 51:47Speaker 1: All the time. He's just freaking depressed. Depressed. He wants
- 51:50Speaker 1: his life back.
- 51:51Speaker 3: That's right.
- 51:52Speaker 1: And so if you're like a manic depressed teen, you
- 51:56Speaker 1: probably relate to that.
- 51:57Speaker 3: I don't know anything about that. What are you talking about? Right, right. Okay,
- 52:01Speaker 3: along that note, just to give my balanced and out
- 52:03Speaker 3: myself as the dork I am, And I had to
- 52:06Speaker 3: double check the date because I was like, okay, I
- 52:09Speaker 3: know what happened with me after the movie, but when
- 52:12Speaker 3: did I see it? So it came out in May
- 52:15Speaker 3: of 1994. Okay. And I was, again, movie geek, going
- 52:20Speaker 3: to see, again, back then, going to see all the
- 52:22Speaker 3: new stuff as it was coming out. Absolutely. And I
- 52:24Speaker 3: loved this movie. Yeah. And got it in a way
- 52:27Speaker 3: that most other dorks didn't seem to. But again, I
- 52:30Speaker 3: was working at a video store, so there was this handful.
- 52:34Speaker 3: There was this little group of dorks that would come in,
- 52:36Speaker 3: and they'd be like, do you have The Crow yet?
- 52:38Speaker 3: They were looking for it on freaking VHS so they
- 52:40Speaker 3: could buy it for $ 99.
- 52:41Speaker 4: 99.
- 52:42Speaker 3: A few of them, literally, it's one of the few
- 52:45Speaker 3: times we ever did a pre-order that was at full
- 52:48Speaker 3: rental price. Normally, we'd wait until stuff dropped down, like $ 20,
- 52:52Speaker 3: you can order it. The Crow had such a weird
- 52:54Speaker 3: fan base that they put it on the official listings
- 52:57Speaker 3: of like, You want to buy it the second it
- 52:59Speaker 3: hits the street?
- 53:01Speaker 6: $ 99.
- 53:01Speaker 3: 99. Get yourself a copy. And a handful of super
- 53:04Speaker 3: hardcore dorks did it. I knew it was having that
- 53:08Speaker 3: little fan base. But I was enough of a dork.
- 53:12Speaker 3: And I don't do this anymore because I just don't care.
- 53:15Speaker 3: I don't have the energy anymore. But at the time
- 53:18Speaker 3: Halloween was coming up, I was one of those people
- 53:21Speaker 3: that dressed like the crow. Dude!
- 53:23Speaker 1: That's pretty epic. Here's the thing.
- 53:26Speaker 3: I did it that year. That year, it hadn't found
- 53:30Speaker 3: its audience yet. That year, nobody knew what the hell
- 53:34Speaker 3: I was. Right. So if you fast forward even a
- 53:37Speaker 3: couple of years, and everybody's seen it on VHS, and
- 53:40Speaker 3: everybody's watched it on cable, and every moody nerd in
- 53:43Speaker 3: the world dresses up like the crow, and you see
- 53:46Speaker 3: 40 of them show up on your porch today.
- 53:48Speaker 4: Sure, sure. I did it in 1994.
- 53:49Speaker 3: That's right.
- 53:50Speaker 1: And went to, first off, went to work.
- 53:56Speaker 3: Which is a terrible idea. Don't ever dress up and
- 53:58Speaker 3: go to your job.
- 53:59Speaker 1: It's a horrible idea. You get excited.
- 54:03Speaker 3: I was a dumb kid. I don't know. So I
- 54:06Speaker 3: did that. And then I also kept it on. Makeup, outfit.
- 54:11Speaker 3: The rest of the day. And went around with the
- 54:13Speaker 3: kids trick or treating later. And I was just like
- 54:15Speaker 3: the whole day. I was the freaking crow. Nobody knew.
- 54:18Speaker 3: There was one dork at work. That obviously was one
- 54:21Speaker 3: of those people. That was like cool. And other than that.
- 54:25Speaker 3: Everybody's like, were you like Kiss or something? Nobody had
- 54:29Speaker 3: a clue. They're like, nobody knew what the hell I was. So,
- 54:36Speaker 3: that was my... Again, that's my interaction with it. I
- 54:41Speaker 3: was on the wave before it was a wave. By
- 54:45Speaker 3: the time the other dorks were dressing up, I'm like, no,
- 54:48Speaker 3: I've already been there, man. I've done my time in
- 54:50Speaker 3: the makeup. I've electrical taped myself up as much as
- 54:54Speaker 3: I need to. I'm good now. I need to move on.
- 54:58Speaker 3: I'm still going to love the crow, but I don't
- 55:00Speaker 3: need to dress up anymore. And I think that was
- 55:02Speaker 3: like the last time I did a full on like
- 55:04Speaker 3: dress up for Halloween for no good reason. Like now
- 55:07Speaker 3: I'm just like, nope, too much effort. Can't do it.
- 55:09Speaker 1: It's out of my system now. I'm good.
- 55:12Speaker 3: I'm good.
- 55:13Speaker 1: I'm good.
- 55:15Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. So there was mine. Yes. I love the
- 55:17Speaker 3: crow enough that I was one of those dorks and
- 55:21Speaker 3: nobody knew what the hell I was because the crow,
- 55:24Speaker 3: and that's, that's part of what I don't understand is
- 55:27Speaker 3: the crow didn't make a ton of money. Mm hmm.
- 55:31Speaker 3: It did alright, I guess. But it's not like it
- 55:34Speaker 3: was the big blockbuster of the year. So that's moving forward.
- 55:38Speaker 3: That's what I don't understand. Why? Why are they killing
- 55:46Speaker 3: themselves to make another Crow? Repeatedly, since 1994, all they
- 55:52Speaker 3: wanted to do was like, oh man, we gotta do
- 55:53Speaker 3: that again. I'm like, why? So you can lose money
- 55:55Speaker 3: for your studio? What the hell is your reasoning for it?
- 56:00Speaker 1: I mean, I guess Crow must have been just so
- 56:03Speaker 1: low budget, and it made its money. It maybe doubled
- 56:06Speaker 1: its money back.
- 56:07Speaker 3: Maybe.
- 56:07Speaker 1: Who knows? You know, its $ 10 million budget got doubled
- 56:10Speaker 1: to $ 20 million. So they're like, it's a hit for
- 56:13Speaker 1: Dimension Pictures. Which isn't saying much. The Weinstein's probably just said, like, man,
- 56:19Speaker 1: we can squeeze this to death. And so they had
- 56:22Speaker 1: one more theatrical, and I think a semi-theatrical, and then
- 56:26Speaker 1: they were you know, it was just, I don't know.
- 56:28Speaker 1: It was cause I guess maybe Brian, the rabid fan
- 56:31Speaker 1: base that would spend $ 99 on a pre-sale. There was
- 56:37Speaker 1: enough of them country, you know, worldwide.
- 56:40Speaker 3: That's the thing. Like, even though the fan base is
- 56:43Speaker 3: very vocal about how much they don't like other versions
- 56:46Speaker 3: and they don't want anybody else playing this character, they
- 56:50Speaker 3: keep cranking them. We're trying to like, I started looking
- 56:53Speaker 3: at this. I was like, the fact that we finally,
- 56:56Speaker 3: this many years later, actually got one. Because, I mean,
- 57:00Speaker 3: immediately they fired out City of Angels. But then I
- 57:02Speaker 3: started looking at all the ones between. Because I remember
- 57:05Speaker 3: I've heard so many rumored ones that I was like,
- 57:07Speaker 3: we should at least kind of address that.
- 57:10Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 57:12Speaker 3: And some of it I didn't even know kicked in
- 57:14Speaker 3: as early as it did. So they said, after City
- 57:17Speaker 3: of Angels was released... Now, certainly, we've actually talked about
- 57:20Speaker 3: this version on the show before, years ago. But I
- 57:23Speaker 3: didn't know it was this early. After City of Angels
- 57:25Speaker 3: was released, Rob Zombie was approached about making the follow-up.
- 57:30Speaker 3: And Zombie's version was going to be called The Crow 2037.
- 57:33Speaker 3: And it followed a young man who grew up in
- 57:36Speaker 3: a dystopian future, unaware that he was a resurrected crow.
- 57:40Speaker 3: And he... I don't know. I'm just like, what?
- 57:44Speaker 1: What is.
- 57:45Speaker 3: I mean, halfway into reading this, I'm just like, what
- 57:48Speaker 3: the hell is that going to be? And with Rob
- 57:52Speaker 3: Zombie at the helm of that, so that's a nightmare. Yeah.
- 57:56Speaker 3: But yeah, that far back, they were still bringing in
- 57:58Speaker 3: the next big name in movies, Rob Zombie, to do
- 58:03Speaker 3: the next one. And then after that, it's almost ridiculous
- 58:08Speaker 3: the more it goes through here. By the time you
- 58:10Speaker 3: hit around 2000, there's a remake called the crow Lazarus,
- 58:16Speaker 3: which would have starred DMX as the resurrected crow. That
- 58:23Speaker 3: would have been great.
- 58:24Speaker 1: That would have been actually, that would have been okay. Actually,
- 58:26Speaker 1: I would have liked to have seen it.
- 58:28Speaker 3: As we roll into the 2000s, we've got Stephen Norrington
- 58:32Speaker 3: making a crow.
- 58:33Speaker 1: That would have been good.
- 58:34Speaker 3: The director of Blade, which again, right up that alley there,
- 58:38Speaker 3: visually it would make sense. Yeah. According to this, who
- 58:41Speaker 3: knows what the internet has that's true. Nick Cave was
- 58:45Speaker 3: supposed to be writing the script.
- 58:47Speaker 1: Okay, come on.
- 58:49Speaker 3: Okay, this is the knife in the heart. By 2010,
- 58:52Speaker 3: it was announced that Mark Wahlberg would be playing Eric Drake.
- 58:58Speaker 1: In my research for this show, I was like, no.
- 59:04Speaker 1: This is a good point. It was just like, how long?
- 59:08Speaker 1: A crow reboot. has been in Underworks and different permutations.
- 59:15Speaker 3: It's in so many different versions. It's like by 2011,
- 59:20Speaker 3: there's Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who did like 28 Weeks Later.
- 59:25Speaker 3: He's the director. Oh, yeah. He's in talks with Bradley
- 59:29Speaker 3: Cooper is the lead. Oh my God.
- 59:31Speaker 1: And that's like, when I'm hearing this stuff, I'm going like, stop.
- 59:34Speaker 3: Yeah. We, I mean, I don't know that we got
- 59:36Speaker 3: what we wanted anyway, but we dodged so many bullets
- 59:39Speaker 3: along the way. We might as well be an undead
- 59:41Speaker 3: crow character because they were also talking to James McAvoy.
- 59:45Speaker 3: They were talking to Ryan Gosling. They were talking to, Oh,
- 59:48Speaker 3: this one kills me. Channing Tatum. Like, yeah, he can
- 59:52Speaker 3: look good with a shirt off maybe, but he ain't
- 59:54Speaker 3: the crow. Like, what are you doing?
- 59:56Speaker 1: Like, it's called the bro.
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: I give up so then let's see it goes to
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: core and hardy who went on to direct the nun
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: his was going to star tom hiddleston which might not
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: be bad but interestingly this was a year before the
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: avengers so he would have just been kind of he
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: wasn't the girl bait that he became by the time
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: that Avengers movie came out. Like, he was still randomly unknown.
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: So that's interesting.
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: I mean, he kind of looks like a bird, you know,
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: and everything.
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: Yeah, it's not the worst casting. No, no. So then, yeah, like,
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: they're throwing out Nicholas Holt. Holt?
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: I don't know him.
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: Oh, he's from all the X-Men movies.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: Oh, okay. Oh, okay, gotcha, gotcha, okay.
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: Which, again, now he's in a ton of stuff. Right.
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: Then I think it goes to... F. Javier Guterres or
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: whatever his last name is. He ended up doing Rings
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: and The Wait. But now this one got James O'Barr
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: all excited because he was supposed to be doing a
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: black and white shot for shot remake of the original
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: graphic novel using the panel layout and dialogue directly from
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: the novel. Nice.
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: So, like, that would have been... That would have been cool.
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: Kind of interesting, I guess, because I guess they veer
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: off enough from the original Brandon win that, like, this
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: would be a different, slightly different take on it.
- 1:01:19Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: And then he dropped out with production troubles and delays
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: in shooting, like all of these are. At that point,
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: I think Luke Evans was in talks, the Hobbit Battle
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: of the Five Armies guy. And so, like, he was
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: going to do it at one point. But he even said,
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: I don't think I'm worthy of portraying Brandon Lee's iconic role. And,
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: you know. So this is the one I think I,
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: this is the recent one that I think I heard
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: the most of was the, uh, the crow reborn based
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: on Cliff Dorfman and his original story idea of an
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: undead police officer returning to avenge his family, which got
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: the attention of Jason Momoa. And that's the one they
- 1:02:00Speaker 3: were making like fake trailers that I saw online. So
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: that was supposed to be coming out. And then, uh,
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: It all went to hell once again. So that was
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: not that long ago. Like I remember seeing the fake
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: trailers for Jason Momoa as the crow. I think he
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: even did like test makeups and like they, the photos
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: got out on the internet. So I think there are
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: like some legit ones. And then I saw dorks making
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: fake photo or trailers and stuff. So that was pretty,
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: you know, in the last five or six years, I
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: feel like. So it's going on. Since the first movie,
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: it has been going on nonstop. And that's the part
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: I don't get. It's like, what the hell? I love
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: that movie, but why? When you've cranked out so many
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: unsuccessful versions of it, including a TV series, why do
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: you want to go back to that well of heartbreak
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: and bankruptcy?
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: Yeah. It's not like the fans are just going out
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: and seeing whatever's got a crow on it, you know? Yeah.
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: You know, the Jason Momoa. Now, if there was one
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: that should have been called the bro, that's the one.
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: That's the bro. That's the bro one. That's the bro edition.
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: The bro crow. But I think that would have been unwatchable.
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: What the hell are you saying?
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: Because nobody wants to see depressed Jason Momoa.
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: I mean.
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: Jason doing moody and sad.
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: I mean, he's already, he, he's so hard to take
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: when he's being a tough guy. Like the only, my
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: favorite thing of him is that like switch to the
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: cable company commercially does with the scrubs guys. That's like
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: the funniest thing ever is him dancing around with those
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: two dorks. And I'm like, can we just watch him
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: do this kind of stuff? Cause him being a bro
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: on screen does not do anything for me. I'm sorry.
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: It's pretty funny.
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: It's, um, So if we're getting to the movie, now
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: here we are, here we are. That's our journey that
- 1:04:01Speaker 3: led us to this movie. Now, would you like my,
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: as I walked out of the theater review of it?
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: I'm pleased.
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: Fine.
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: Please do.
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: It's fine. That's fine. Like that. That was my, I
- 1:04:15Speaker 3: wasn't upset. I wasn't shaking my fist to the gods.
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: I was just like, that's fine. Yeah. And before I
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: got to the car, I thought to myself and went,
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: you know that I can easily say that is the
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: second best Crow movie. Now, that's not saying.
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: Much, but it's totally.
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: The second best Crow movie.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: You know what? You know what? Okay, my walking out
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: of the movie theater, all right, was, uh, All right. Well,
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: walking into the movie theater after I saw, I don't
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: read the reviews, but I just saw like the critical score,
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: you know, and it was so low.
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: I heard not good things via the internet.
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: I thought it was going to be like one of those,
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: let's just release it, you know, before streaming. Cause we
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: put all this, we put, I don't know, maybe somebody
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: will come see it. So we can get Oscar nominations, obviously.
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: Gotta get a theatrical run.
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: So, you know.
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: I thought it was just going to be a train wreck.
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: I thought it was going to be like.
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: See, that's what I expected. Well, I mean, the way
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: people talked about it, I was like, how can it
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: be that bad? It's the pro setup. Like, all you
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: have to do is follow the checklist. Every dumb straight-to-video
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: movie's done it since then. Like, just do this, and
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: then do this, and at the end he does this. And, like,
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: it can't be that hard. And then they didn't... You know,
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: that's all they did. They were fine.
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I just thought there must be, like, some base... uh,
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: miscalculation and the conception of this movie that just makes
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: it so terrible that it, it's, uh, it's, it might
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: just be like an interesting train wreck, but I was
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: going like, yeah, the, the sequels are all terrible. Um,
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: I kind of have a spot in my heart for
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: city of angels now, you know, because it's like, so
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: of the time, you know, I have not.
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: Revisited that one. I hated the second one so much
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: in the theater.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: Me too. Me too. Me too.
- 1:06:16Speaker 3: I've watched the other ones. Well, haven't revisited four i
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: did watch three in the last year because i forgot
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: almost 99 of it and it's fine-ish it's again maybe
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: the third third best crow movie not saying much but
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: exactly it's a big little kirsten dunst in it that's
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: all you need.
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: I walked out of the crow reboot and this is
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: going to kick kick me out of all the cool
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: kid clubs but i walked out it's okay i was
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: never invited anyway um I walked out going like, I
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: actually had a really good time with this. I would say,
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: but I had just recently watched the first one. But
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: I was going like, I was really happy to see
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: that they didn't just read. I didn't feel like they
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: just tried to read. I was glad it wasn't a
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: nostalgia grab. You know, I was glad that they did.
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: It's only a nostalgic glad for people enjoy what there's
- 1:07:19Speaker 3: the thing I like, but nobody liked it.
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: So there wasn't, there wasn't like a, there wasn't like a,
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: a new metal. They weren't, it was just like a different,
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: I mean, new metal, like that's still a relevant thing.
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: It's out there.
- 1:07:34Speaker 3: It's just a totally different version of it these days,
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: but yeah.
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:07:38Speaker 3: It's definitely out there now.
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: I was sitting there going like, This is like, I
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: was going like, the first one is like this cool
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: indie movie that's held together with just sheer force of
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: will and a singular vision from a director with something
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: to prove and Brandon Lee trying to get out from
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: under the shadow of his dad and a certain level
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: of just, you know, the right time, the right place,
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: the right people involved where Yeah, it's cartoony as hell.
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: The scenes with Ernie Hudson and the homicide detective are
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: just laughably.
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: It's any standard cop movie.
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: We're busting you back down to a beat cop.
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: That's right.
- 1:08:25Speaker 3: It's what every action movie of the time had, really.
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. It still kind of does.
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: It's not like it's changed much.
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. So it's like, wow. It's like an
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: indie freaking movie. like with like a certain level of,
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: you know, layer of theatricality, as you say, you know,
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: and this, I felt like, and this is usually what
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: I hate is. And in my old, old man days,
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: like when, you know, in my chip on my shoulder
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: days with like, when they remade like last house on
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: the left and it looked like a timex commercial i'm
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: just like and i'm just like uh i'm going like
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: or like you know the dawn of the dead remake
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: where it's like this you know they took this scrappy
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: little indie film and they throw unlimited resources into it
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: you know uh but but this felt like they had
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: all the money in the world to make a crow remake.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: And they had every resource and every permit and every
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: this and every that, and had some high class or,
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: you know, highfalutin director, you know, and, um, you know, uh,
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: I just thought, and they got, you know, John Houston's kid,
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: you know, the bad guy. And, uh, there's a certain
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: level of, sheen to it that I was like going
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: like this is its own thing it's not the crow
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: 94 it really is like this weird alternate universe it's
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: kind of like a special edition one-off comic version uh
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: you know it's like if you just saw it as
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: like a you know like a mini series like the
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: crow the original crow is like the crow and this
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: is kind of like this you know limited edition 3
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: you know, one-off, you know, version of the crow where
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: they got a new artist in and, you know, they
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: printed it on expensive paper and, you know, it's got
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: a foil cover.
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: Well, and that's kind of what it is. And that's
- 1:10:29Speaker 3: what we, I think on the show and definitely off,
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: like for six or eight months now, I've been having
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: this discussion with Misty, which if you're listening to this show,
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: I'm assuming you know who she is. And Jay's like
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: the biggest crow fan in the world, but like he's
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: torn off all the other ones. And like, she's loved
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: it too, but like, isn't just annoyed by all of it.
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: So this was the first thing we said when I
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: got the first, those first shots of, of him came
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: out in the makeup and the tattoos and like in
- 1:10:57Speaker 3: front of the mirror there, those shots leaked out and
- 1:11:00Speaker 3: leaked again, released. And like people just started losing their mind. Yeah.
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: And I'm like, from the get go, we both said
- 1:11:08Speaker 3: the exact same thing. We were like, here's your problem.
- 1:11:11Speaker 3: You guys have shot yourself in the foot. Because you
- 1:11:14Speaker 3: know what you did? You made them have the same names. Sure.
- 1:11:20Speaker 3: Because I saw the trailer after that and I went,
- 1:11:22Speaker 3: this looks like an entirely different story. So why is
- 1:11:25Speaker 3: it Eric Draven? Why is Shelly there? If you're telling
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: an entirely different story, go ahead and tell the entirely
- 1:11:32Speaker 3: different story. And go with it. Which is because it
- 1:11:36Speaker 3: actually is. Like, if you go and look, the look
- 1:11:39Speaker 3: that he has with the shaved down hair and the
- 1:11:42Speaker 3: tattoos everywhere is from an entirely separate Crow comic. Right.
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: And that's what the character looks like exactly. If you
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: go look it up, he's got those tattoos. He's got
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: that terrible haircut. Like, that is exactly what it looks like.
- 1:11:57Speaker 3: but it has an entirely different title. So it's just like,
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: if they would have gone with that and not somehow
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: some corporate executive was like, well, we can't sell it
- 1:12:07Speaker 3: unless it's just the crow. Everything now has got to
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: be a reboot. So we've got to make it just the,
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: if they would have done the crow colon redemption and
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: you know, it's like, it would have been fine. And
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: like called him Bobby and she was Sally and like,
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: I think it would have been, it would have gone
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: over as well as any other sequel for fuck's sakes,
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: but which isn't great, but nobody lost their mind when
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: those other three sequels came out. But because this one,
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: they called it the crow. And they made the characters
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: Eric and Shelly. I'm like, okay, you've killed it now.
- 1:12:40Speaker 3: Because every fan of The Crow, both the comic and
- 1:12:43Speaker 3: the movie, are going to show up waiting to hate
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: this thing. Absolutely. And I feel like that's the only
- 1:12:48Speaker 3: people that came to the theater will hate watch. You know,
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: it's like nobody, no kids, your kids are a good example.
- 1:12:54Speaker 3: No kids were out there going, oh man, can't wait
- 1:12:56Speaker 3: to see that. They were just like, what the hell
- 1:12:59Speaker 3: is this? And they skipped it. Like everyone else in
- 1:13:02Speaker 3: the world, except Crow fans, who showed up ready to
- 1:13:05Speaker 3: be pissed at this movie that's not brandon he's not
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: eric draven like i'm like no he's not if you
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: go look at that comic that's not who he's supposed
- 1:13:13Speaker 3: to be he's an entirely different character and they're telling
- 1:13:16Speaker 3: an entirely different story so it's not really a reboot
- 1:13:20Speaker 3: but they shot themselves in the foot by calling it
- 1:13:22Speaker 3: the crow and making them the same characters names they're
- 1:13:25Speaker 3: not even the same characters they're not they gave them
- 1:13:28Speaker 3: the same character names which is a stupid move Sure.
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: Stupid move. They did it for probably financial reasons and everything.
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: Who knows? But yeah, totally different. Totally different characters, which
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: I appreciated.
- 1:13:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: That's why it's.
- 1:13:46Speaker 3: Good for what it is, you know?
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: For what it is. And I go like, yeah, I
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: don't want to go out on a limb and just
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: say that this was a... I'm not going to say
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: it's a great movie, but I said I had a
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: lot of fun watching this Crow movie and the fact
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: that they... did something different and it didn't feel like
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: a city of angels, uh, slapped together. Let's just make
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: the same movie again, you know? Um, and, and so,
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: so I would say there's some, there's some stuff to
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: get into about this movie. Uh, and we'll just start
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: with the, my gut reaction to was when I saw
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: the first stills with the, uh, bad haircut and I'm
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: just going like, man, Just everybody's on fentanyl nowadays. And
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: the proof is in the haircuts.
- 1:14:35Speaker 3: Yeah. Looking it up here. It's the crow colon wild justice.
- 1:14:40Speaker 3: It's not The Crow. It's an entirely different series that
- 1:14:44Speaker 3: came out in comic form as The Crow Wild Justice
- 1:14:49Speaker 3: has an entirely different main character. Cool. And was its
- 1:14:52Speaker 3: own little story arc.
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: That's what I felt like.
- 1:14:55Speaker 3: He's done that over the years because that's kind of
- 1:14:57Speaker 3: what City of Angels is. It's like, here's that story again,
- 1:14:59Speaker 3: but with a different character. They all kind of fall
- 1:15:02Speaker 3: into the same... Oh, they're in love and they get
- 1:15:04Speaker 3: killed and blah, blah, whatever. But like, so it's the
- 1:15:07Speaker 3: same setup, but they're all different stories. That's kind of
- 1:15:09Speaker 3: what James O'Barr has done for the entirety of his career.
- 1:15:13Speaker 3: He's just like, this is my thing. This is what
- 1:15:15Speaker 3: I do. So again, they just, they screwed themselves over
- 1:15:19Speaker 3: by trying to cram it into the reboot mold. And
- 1:15:22Speaker 3: then not at all doing that. Like we're going to
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: make an entirely different movie, but we're going to pitch
- 1:15:26Speaker 3: it as this thing that everyone hates and wonder why
- 1:15:30Speaker 3: we don't make money. Yeah.
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: I think the movie is unfairly maligned by probably the
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: fans and by the critics. I thought that this actually
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: felt like a movie, not like a mistake. I felt
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: like they actually had some interesting reboot. I felt like
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: there was a reason for it to go. I would say...
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: I made some notes, all right, when I first got
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: out because I knew we weren't going to talk about
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: it for a week afterwards, okay?
- 1:16:03Speaker 3: And my brain doesn't retain information anymore.
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: It does not retain information at all.
- 1:16:07Speaker 3: I'm talking about mine.
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: Yeah, mine too, mine too. All right, all right, all right.
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: So I'm going to just say, all right, number one
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: thing I appreciated was about the Crow remake, and it's probably,
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: you know, it's one of the maybe weaknesses, if you
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: were to call it that. I mean, it was fine
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: at the time, but of the Crow original, where it's
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: all flashbacks and you kind of get a feeling that
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: they were in love, I really liked them fleshing out
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: the relationship between... the crow and his girlfriend. We won't
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: call it Eric and Shelly.
- 1:16:50Speaker 3: Whoever that random guy is with this random girl.
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: Those two new people. I like that they met in rehab.
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: I like that they had a pass before they met.
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: You get a feeling that they're coming from you know,
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: really messed up. You really get a sense of Shelly's
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: messed up history. Oh, yeah. Eric Draven's, well, you know,
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: New Crow.
- 1:17:14Speaker 3: This version of Eric Draven.
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: This version of Eric Draven. You get a sense that
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: he had a really sick mom and, you know, his
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: horse cut. But then he's got a Brooklyn accent for
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: some reason. I don't know. I was like, I guess
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: that was... The farm in Brooklyn or something.
- 1:17:28Speaker 3: You know, the farms of Brooklyn.
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: The farms of Brooklyn, the prairie land of Brooklyn. Where
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: you keep your horses, obviously.
- 1:17:33Speaker 3: Right, right, yeah.
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: I was going like, I didn't get his accent if
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: it was like the Midwest or something that he's coming
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: out of. But it was fine. You get a fact
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: that he's kind of a loser, you know?
- 1:17:45Speaker 3: He just looks like a trailer kid, you know? He
- 1:17:47Speaker 3: would grow up to get really bad tattoos all over him.
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: Absolutely. Absolutely. So there's a certain glamour. To Eric and.
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: Eric and Shelly.
- 1:18:03Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: In the original. Of like this kind of like rock
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: and roll couple. You know. Social activists. You know. There's
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: kind of like this. You know. Idealized thing. But in
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: this remake. They're kind of more like.
- 1:18:17Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: Outcasts. Or people who have messed up their lives. You know.
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: And here they are. And they meet. And I like
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: that they meet in rehab. And I like that they
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: just kind of cling to each other because they're just
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: like they've got nothing and they know they're a mess.
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: And so I kind of like that aspect of them
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: fleshing out their relationship more, you know. So when something
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: does happen, you know, you go like, man, they really
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: had only each other, you know. uh so i like
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: that i.
- 1:18:53Speaker 3: Like that in theory i think okay re-watching the first
- 1:18:56Speaker 3: one i think that's i think that's what separates it
- 1:18:59Speaker 3: and why i think it should definitely be like and
- 1:19:02Speaker 3: here's a different crow story because like The reason the
- 1:19:06Speaker 3: original Crow works is, as I said earlier, and it
- 1:19:10Speaker 3: really solidified it rewatching it this last time. It's like
- 1:19:13Speaker 3: it is a fable. It is a fairy tale. And
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: like we've literally like the big dreamy world be whether it's,
- 1:19:21Speaker 3: you know, the it's just as like boiled down to
- 1:19:24Speaker 3: its essentials of like the, you know. the knight and
- 1:19:28Speaker 3: the maiden and like, here's the, he's the, the fallen
- 1:19:31Speaker 3: knight and here's the evil dragon is our bad guy. Like,
- 1:19:35Speaker 3: so it's, it's very much that so much so that like,
- 1:19:39Speaker 3: by the time you get to it, like they have
- 1:19:41Speaker 3: to be idealized for this to work. So it's like,
- 1:19:45Speaker 3: we don't, we, and this is why I think that
- 1:19:48Speaker 3: romantic version of that comes through that like every like
- 1:19:52Speaker 3: hot topic girl in the world swoons for this movie
- 1:19:55Speaker 3: is because, right. there's no real basis to the relationship.
- 1:20:00Speaker 3: It is a romance novel version of like, all we've
- 1:20:04Speaker 3: got is dreamy shots of them doing cute couple things.
- 1:20:07Speaker 3: And they are quote unquote, the perfect couple. Exactly. That's
- 1:20:11Speaker 3: the difference is we don't have any background. All we
- 1:20:15Speaker 3: have is his flashbacks and that's it. Most of them
- 1:20:18Speaker 3: don't even have dialogue. It's just flashbacks of them being
- 1:20:21Speaker 3: in love.
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:20:22Speaker 3: Super heightened romanticized version, you know, it's like, Exactly. So
- 1:20:27Speaker 3: I think.
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: Picking out a wedding dress, commuting on the couch, ordering pizza.
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: Wonderful fantasy memories.
- 1:20:34Speaker 3: Yeah. It's like, it's the cutest thing you've ever seen. Exactly.
- 1:20:38Speaker 3: But that's why that works as an idealized romantic thing.
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:20:42Speaker 3: When you cut to the new one, the reason it
- 1:20:46Speaker 3: needs to be a new and entirely different thing is
- 1:20:48Speaker 3: they're like a real couple and we.
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: See their backstory.
- 1:20:52Speaker 3: And you see... that they're a freaking mess and that
- 1:20:56Speaker 3: the relationship kind of doesn't make sense. And the further
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: you go into it, you realize, Oh, these are kind
- 1:21:02Speaker 3: of shitty people. I don't mean that in a bad way.
- 1:21:06Speaker 3: I'm just like, they're massively flawed versus Eric. And the
- 1:21:11Speaker 3: original one is perfect. You know, he's just like, he's
- 1:21:14Speaker 3: the most beautiful man you've ever seen. He plays guitar.
- 1:21:18Speaker 3: He loves his girlfriend. He takes care of this weird,
- 1:21:21Speaker 3: almost orphan girl. Like, he is just a perfect character
- 1:21:25Speaker 3: yeah and then you get to these two and they're
- 1:21:27Speaker 3: just screw-ups from day one like they are a mess
- 1:21:30Speaker 3: and they bet like by the in the context of
- 1:21:33Speaker 3: the movie they realize yeah i don't even know if
- 1:21:36Speaker 3: this romance is working so much like dude we've already
- 1:21:40Speaker 3: died for each other but i'm not so sure about
- 1:21:42Speaker 3: the romance I'm like, wow, this is very, that's why
- 1:21:46Speaker 3: I'm like, this is a different movie because they are
- 1:21:49Speaker 3: not even in a relationship anymore in their undead life.
- 1:21:53Speaker 3: Like when your main character is doubting the relationship, I'm like,
- 1:21:57Speaker 3: this is not our idealized romantic fable thing that we're
- 1:22:00Speaker 3: telling in the first grow. This is kind of too
- 1:22:04Speaker 3: grounded to work in that aspect. Like it's, it's a
- 1:22:08Speaker 3: totally different thing. We're taking a look at, A, the
- 1:22:11Speaker 3: relationship first before the crow bullshit kicks in. And then, like,
- 1:22:16Speaker 3: you get to see them, like most relationships, go to hell. Like,
- 1:22:21Speaker 3: it just falls apart. And I'm like, this is a
- 1:22:24Speaker 3: weird version of this story to try to do. But
- 1:22:28Speaker 3: I do think it's really interesting that we spend that
- 1:22:30Speaker 3: much time with them. Right. That we see what they
- 1:22:33Speaker 3: are as a couple.
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 1:22:35Speaker 3: It also like makes kind of no sense. Like at
- 1:22:37Speaker 3: least in the original crow, we had this, like they've
- 1:22:40Speaker 3: been together for years and they're engaged and they've got
- 1:22:43Speaker 3: all this. So like when you get to that true
- 1:22:45Speaker 3: love and like, I will do anything for this person
- 1:22:48Speaker 3: that I love, it kind of makes sense. In this one,
- 1:22:51Speaker 3: I'm like, they spent a weekend together, dude. And I
- 1:22:54Speaker 3: think that's what they start to realize. He's like, yeah,
- 1:22:56Speaker 3: I don't know about this relationship anymore. I just met
- 1:23:00Speaker 3: this girl in rehab. I don't know about giving up
- 1:23:04Speaker 3: my whole soul. So I don't know. It's such a
- 1:23:09Speaker 3: different take on that from just the way that it
- 1:23:12Speaker 3: approaches the coupledom of it. It's so different and so
- 1:23:17Speaker 3: idealized in that first one where we just don't. even
- 1:23:21Speaker 3: try that in this movie. It is more grounded than
- 1:23:24Speaker 3: it possibly needs to be.
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: Dude, that was one of the parts I liked the best.
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: I'm probably not the best guy to ask if true
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: love lasts forever right now.
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: Well, I took some moments of that myself. I was like,
- 1:23:43Speaker 3: oh yeah, I get this.
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: I really liked the part Where he's like, am I
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: ready to throw my soul away for this girl I
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: met in rehab?
- 1:23:59Speaker 3: That I just watched a video of her murdering someone.
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: I'm like, ooh. I'm like, ooh. I don't know if I'm,
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: you know, we've been together, what? You know, maybe a month.
- 1:24:10Speaker 3: That's why this has to be a different story. Because
- 1:24:13Speaker 3: it's like, the whole Eric and Shelly thing is crazy.
- 1:24:17Speaker 3: perfect romance, and I'm like, these two screw-ups, like, this
- 1:24:20Speaker 3: is not the same story, so please give them different names,
- 1:24:24Speaker 3: and I'm fine to, like, explore this relationship and, like, see, okay,
- 1:24:28Speaker 3: what if you take these two screwed-up kids and throw
- 1:24:30Speaker 3: them into the crow scenario, because it shouldn't go the same,
- 1:24:34Speaker 3: because they're not the same thing.
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: Absolutely, that's what I liked about it, because I was
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: able to put aside that they were supposed to be
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: Eric and Shelly, alright, because they were totally not, alright,
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: and so I was more like, this is a totally
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: different situation here. All right. You know, it's the same story,
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: but told through the point of view. And I get
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: that he does what he does because he just wants
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: to do one noble damn thing in his life. Uh, and, and,
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: and so it's just like, I've been a screw up
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: my entire life. And so can I forgive Shelly? Can
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: I do something that, Outside of myself. And I know
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: I'm already screwed. So maybe just on my way out.
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: I can do something good. For this person. Who pulled
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: into a bad situation. Because I don't. I feel like
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: I'm trash. I don't care if I go to hell.
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: But maybe this person. Showed me some compassion. So I can.
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: Even if it's not like this perfect love. It's like
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: a noble idea. And one thing I liked about it
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: was that kind of up the stakes a little bit
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: in that he's not going to live happily ever after
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: with her in the afterlife. It's like, this is like,
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: he's basically, you know, my soul for hers is, I
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: thought that kind of redeemed that aspect. Because I was like, no,
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: it's not the first crow. It's something else.
- 1:26:12Speaker 3: You know, that's what I was hoping as I got
- 1:26:14Speaker 3: into it and I saw him make that deal. I
- 1:26:16Speaker 3: was like, man, I really hope they don't like hollywood
- 1:26:20Speaker 3: out and give us a happy ending and like you
- 1:26:22Speaker 3: know he he sold his soul he's going to hell
- 1:26:26Speaker 3: for her don't wuss out and then have them be
- 1:26:29Speaker 3: happy together in the end i was like no no
- 1:26:30Speaker 3: no screw that i'm like that is the first crow
- 1:26:32Speaker 3: it is a fairy yeah they're supposed to be that
- 1:26:34Speaker 3: way in that first movie this movie he just sold
- 1:26:37Speaker 3: his soul to the devil essentially to save her so
- 1:26:41Speaker 3: now you've got to kill this dude and have him
- 1:26:43Speaker 3: go to hell like that's the only way this story
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: works So I was so, not to jump to the end,
- 1:26:48Speaker 3: so relieved when they were like, oh no, he's just
- 1:26:51Speaker 3: gone and he's gone to hell for her. That's the
- 1:26:54Speaker 3: romantic gesture. You know, that's the, it's not the coming
- 1:26:57Speaker 3: back and killing people like the first one of like
- 1:26:59Speaker 3: trying to, you know.
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: Save us.
- 1:27:01Speaker 3: It's the, I... Gave myself for you. Even though we
- 1:27:07Speaker 3: weren't really that great together. I didn't know you that well.
- 1:27:11Speaker 3: We kind of slept as people. We didn't connect that much.
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: We kind of enabled each other's bad behavior.
- 1:27:20Speaker 3: Yeah. I was like, it's not an ideal romance. But again,
- 1:27:24Speaker 3: I think you're right. I think it's like his one
- 1:27:26Speaker 3: noble act was the only... good thing he'd done in
- 1:27:30Speaker 3: his life, arguably, or certainly in his recent years, it's like,
- 1:27:33Speaker 3: and him doing that was his act of love. Even
- 1:27:37Speaker 3: if he didn't really love her, like this was the
- 1:27:39Speaker 3: best thing he had to give for. Right. Right.
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: It was like, it may not be the only thing
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: you had to give for. It was like, it was
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: the closest thing to love he had had, you know,
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: it was like, she says, have you ever loved anybody?
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: He's like, I don't know. You know, it's like, there's like,
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: it's like in this imperfect world, in my imperfect brain,
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: and there's, uh, screwed up, uh, thing environment, you know,
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: and maybe just my mental illness and my, my drug
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: abuse and, you know, never having any kind of center,
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: you know, and then making it a person who, who
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: never could stand up for himself, you know, and, uh,
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: you know, just kind of this broken, broken person, you know,
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: it's like, I don't know if this was love. I
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: don't know if I'm ready to make this decision yet,
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: but it's, uh, But it's the closest I've gotten. And it's,
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: it's something good I could do, you know, and I'm
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: not really known for doing great things.
- 1:28:38Speaker 3: I mean, that is. the best thing to take out
- 1:28:41Speaker 3: of this that yeah decision because it kind of again
- 1:28:44Speaker 3: in the other crow world it doesn't make any sense
- 1:28:47Speaker 3: like the whole idea is to like redeem yourself and
- 1:28:50Speaker 3: get revenge for what happened to you bring the two
- 1:28:53Speaker 3: of them together forever and like so the fact that
- 1:28:56Speaker 3: yeah this guy is so messed up that he's just
- 1:28:58Speaker 3: like this is all i have to give this is
- 1:29:01Speaker 3: the best thing i can do as a person but
- 1:29:04Speaker 3: yeah i'm kind of a shitty person but if this
- 1:29:08Speaker 3: one act can hopefully redeem everything else i've done right
- 1:29:12Speaker 3: i don't get to go to heaven for it but
- 1:29:14Speaker 3: that is the deal like i've seen this one window
- 1:29:17Speaker 3: and like i can't do anything to save her i
- 1:29:20Speaker 3: go back to my regular life and it's gonna suck
- 1:29:22Speaker 3: and i'm gonna be unhappy So here's this one thing
- 1:29:25Speaker 3: I can do to just put it into it. And
- 1:29:28Speaker 3: hopefully somebody else will get something good out of me
- 1:29:31Speaker 3: having lived to some extent.
- 1:29:33Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: Yeah. Which I think is a, uh, valid reason to
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: remake the crow.
- 1:29:41Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: Or to do another version.
- 1:29:44Speaker 3: Of another version.
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: It's not a remake.
- 1:29:47Speaker 3: It's not a different.
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: Story to do a different story. And so, yeah, if
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: you were going into this, expecting a nostalgia grab, expecting
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: a gothic overload with industrial gothic music, then yeah, you're
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: not going to... I would see how you'd be disappointed.
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: But if you have an open enough mind to say like, hey, look,
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: they spent all this money and they actually had a
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: different take on which none of the official sequels gave
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: us the, I mean, I guess the one in the
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: old West, you know, but what a, what a mess,
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: you know, what a mess. You know, I mean, I
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: was like, wow, you know, I was going like, okay. So,
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: and I thought the act, you know, that we're talking
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: about casting, I think that guy, you know, played a
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: real good, you know, performance of that. He's a good
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: actor in general.
- 1:30:52Speaker 3: He's a good actor. But he is good at being
- 1:30:56Speaker 3: this messed up kid. And he doesn't read as anything
- 1:30:59Speaker 3: more than a kid. He's a broken kid that just
- 1:31:03Speaker 3: got older and did enough drugs to try to numb
- 1:31:05Speaker 3: himself from his crappy life and just continued to make
- 1:31:09Speaker 3: bad decisions. And he plays that really well. Absolutely.
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: And him and Shelly's relationship. I read one thing that
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: they didn't have any chemistry but i thought they did
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: as like two broken people who felt like they had
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: screwed up their lives too much to ever be in
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: love again you know.
- 1:31:27Speaker 3: Again where the story goes that kind of works because
- 1:31:30Speaker 3: again to me that's part of what happens here is
- 1:31:32Speaker 3: like you get midway in and you're like it isn't
- 1:31:36Speaker 3: this idealized love we didn't spend years together We spent
- 1:31:39Speaker 3: a weekend together. I barely know you. So the fact
- 1:31:43Speaker 3: that I'm making this decision to sell my soul to
- 1:31:47Speaker 3: save you is almost ridiculous. But this is the world
- 1:31:51Speaker 3: I live in. This is the place that I've ended
- 1:31:54Speaker 3: up in. Due to all my bad decisions in my life,
- 1:31:57Speaker 3: I ended up here, and this is the one thing
- 1:32:00Speaker 3: I can do. So, like, the fact that they didn't
- 1:32:02Speaker 3: have chemistry almost works for that, you know? Well, you're right.
- 1:32:06Speaker 3: It would become an idealized romance if they did, if
- 1:32:09Speaker 3: they were perfect for each other. You'd want them to
- 1:32:12Speaker 3: go off to heaven and live together as perfect souls,
- 1:32:16Speaker 3: but they're not, they don't have chemistry. They had a
- 1:32:19Speaker 3: screwed up weekend where they screwed around and had tons
- 1:32:22Speaker 3: of drugs. And like that, that's what happened. And like,
- 1:32:25Speaker 3: that's the weird world of this movie is like, it's
- 1:32:28Speaker 3: not them having perfect chemistry and going to be together forever.
- 1:32:32Speaker 3: It's like, right. This was a bad hookup. And now
- 1:32:36Speaker 3: I'm going to sell my soul for you because that's
- 1:32:39Speaker 3: all I got.
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: Well, it's interesting. He wouldn't had there not been something there,
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: the crow wouldn't have given him a chance. All right. But,
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: you know, so there may have been something there. But,
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: you know, they were just him.
- 1:32:51Speaker 3: Is it just the well, I kind of want to
- 1:32:53Speaker 3: get to that, too. What you think of the the
- 1:32:56Speaker 3: limbo world that he ends up in and whoever that
- 1:32:58Speaker 3: guy is, that this is a job. But I could
- 1:33:02Speaker 3: maybe that's all he saw of him. He's like, look,
- 1:33:04Speaker 3: you've done nothing with your life. You haven't shown anything
- 1:33:08Speaker 3: that would be reason for you to go to heaven,
- 1:33:10Speaker 3: but I'm going to give you this chance. Like whether
- 1:33:12Speaker 3: or not you guys are meant to be together, whether
- 1:33:15Speaker 3: you have chemistry and you love this girl, here is
- 1:33:18Speaker 3: the chance I can give you because otherwise I'll just
- 1:33:22Speaker 3: take you off right now. Yeah. Judgment ain't going to
- 1:33:24Speaker 3: be good. So let's put you back and see if
- 1:33:27Speaker 3: you can redeem yourself. If you can become something like,
- 1:33:30Speaker 3: even if it's not for her, if for you, you
- 1:33:34Speaker 3: can become something better by going back. Right. I don't know.
- 1:33:38Speaker 3: It's really interesting.
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: It's like her fate, Shelly's fate is to go to hell.
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: And so like, this is a person who is the
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: first time he's maybe felt belonging. And so maybe it's not. Yeah.
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: Like the fantasy love, but what a great story of like,
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: just being selfless, you know, of like saying like, look,
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: I just don't, I, it is kind of, it's kind
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: of like a be in a night where it's like,
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: maybe he doesn't know. It just like, The stakes for
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: Shelly wasn't that she'd be dead and she's in heaven now.
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: It's like, she's going to hell unless somebody intervenes.
- 1:34:15Speaker 3: She's going to hell and deserves it, basically. She's meant
- 1:34:20Speaker 3: to screw up. She's not a great person. Whether or
- 1:34:23Speaker 3: not the bad guy is involved, she murdered someone, at
- 1:34:26Speaker 3: least one person that we know of. Based on the facts,
- 1:34:30Speaker 3: she needs to go to hell. He's the one that
- 1:34:32Speaker 3: has to come in and go, no, I think there's something...
- 1:34:35Speaker 3: to her. I think she is redeemable.
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:34:37Speaker 3: Like she got led down the wrong path, but like,
- 1:34:40Speaker 3: there's something good there in her still.
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:34:44Speaker 3: And like, that is like the reason to give it,
- 1:34:46Speaker 3: you know, give it a shot, but.
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: It was something not a great person.
- 1:34:49Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: There was, there's something good and I'm not a great person,
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: but there was something good in each other that we
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: brought out of each other. You know, we, we showed
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: peace and compassion towards each other. And maybe they just
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: aren't used to being in a world of, people showing
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: compassion for each other you know and so we've seen
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: not that we've seen all right and so the I
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: like the the fact yeah what that was interesting when
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: Danny Houston whispers into your ear is the the movie
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: says that it just brings the darkness in you and
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: brings it up to the surface you know And so
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: it's like that darkness was in these people and it
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: just makes you do the horrible things, you know, that.
- 1:35:30Speaker 3: The things that you talk yourself out of all day long. Yeah.
- 1:35:33Speaker 3: It just gets rid of that reservation, that bumper that
- 1:35:38Speaker 3: stops it.
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:35:39Speaker 3: So we all go through the day and be like, oh,
- 1:35:41Speaker 3: I could murder that dude. And it just takes that
- 1:35:43Speaker 3: away and you go murder someone.
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: Takes that away. Right, right, right. Or, you know, you
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: hurt yourself or you're doing something, you know, just something
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: that makes you less destructive. You know, that that barrier
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: is taken down. So, yeah, that was a really cool thing.
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: There was some interesting stuff there.
- 1:36:01Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: So I was in that line. I liked the bad
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: guy's motivation where he wasn't just like this nihilist going like,
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: let's just watch it all burn. You know, that was
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: not greeting cards and stuff.
- 1:36:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: I like that line's awesome though.
- 1:36:20Speaker 3: Man whatever the hell he says it's so good right
- 1:36:23Speaker 3: um that only is funny because it's michael wink got.
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: Bad well yeah wouldn't have been terrible had they had
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: uh danny houston try to redo that line i mean
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: so we're gotta say that they're is this could have
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: been so much worse had they tried to, you know,
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: do line grabs and, you know, have it reset and
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: just been terrible.
- 1:36:47Speaker 3: Which happens in a reboot type things. One of which
- 1:36:50Speaker 3: I won't, won't discuss. Cause I don't think you've seen,
- 1:36:53Speaker 3: but we got that in a recent one that I'm
- 1:36:55Speaker 3: just like, Oh really? Like we're going there. So yeah,
- 1:37:01Speaker 3: that happens a lot. So the fact that they like
- 1:37:03Speaker 3: purposely went a different direction because that's, That's the other thing.
- 1:37:07Speaker 3: This delves into, like, the otherworldly... Like, all we get
- 1:37:11Speaker 3: in the first one is just the basic structure of
- 1:37:13Speaker 3: the crow. Yeah. And, like, that's pretty much it. Yeah. And, like,
- 1:37:16Speaker 3: there's sort of some weird mystic-y stuff going on with
- 1:37:20Speaker 3: our winged cot and his girlfriend's sister.
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:37:23Speaker 3: You know, eating eyeballs or whatever. You know, that's weird
- 1:37:25Speaker 3: and mystical, but, like, we never cross the line into, whoa,
- 1:37:29Speaker 3: you know, this is otherworldly. Whereas this one, like, this
- 1:37:32Speaker 3: guy made a deal with the devil.
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:37:34Speaker 3: He has... otherworldly evil powers to make people go murder
- 1:37:38Speaker 3: and whatever they need to do. And like it, it
- 1:37:40Speaker 3: takes on an entirely different role as far as the
- 1:37:43Speaker 3: like bad side of it. Whereas bad side in the
- 1:37:46Speaker 3: original is just like street thugs, you know, it's just
- 1:37:48Speaker 3: like dealing drugs and making money off of people and
- 1:37:52Speaker 3: burning shit down. Like, you know, it's just a bunch of,
- 1:37:54Speaker 3: you know, idiot bad guys from any action movie. Right.
- 1:37:57Speaker 3: And versus this is like otherworldly demon powers. Yeah.
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: Yeah, which I can buy because the movie is about
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: a guy coming back to life.
- 1:38:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it is. Again, the structure of the
- 1:38:09Speaker 3: crow sets up for that. So it's almost weird that
- 1:38:12Speaker 3: the original doesn't really... Like, we don't even get to
- 1:38:15Speaker 3: the rules of it much. She just gives the, if
- 1:38:18Speaker 3: you love someone, and they come back, and blah, blah, blah.
- 1:38:21Speaker 3: And then eventually the bad guys kind of figure out
- 1:38:23Speaker 3: it's connected to the crow. But, like, we don't really
- 1:38:26Speaker 3: understand why or who... Actually, I mean, that stuff was
- 1:38:28Speaker 3: kind of in there, that... the stuff that got cut
- 1:38:31Speaker 3: out yeah skull cowboy character right right michael berryman showed
- 1:38:36Speaker 3: up right told him the rules more or less and
- 1:38:38Speaker 3: is also why we get that weird jump cut and
- 1:38:41Speaker 3: he's all taped up because it was sort of that
- 1:38:43Speaker 3: same thing of like if you you know start to
- 1:38:46Speaker 3: doubt yourself or your relationship or whatever you don't have
- 1:38:49Speaker 3: the healing powers anymore right right duct taped himself back
- 1:38:53Speaker 3: together which doesn't make any sense in that first one
- 1:38:55Speaker 3: so i think it's actually a smart move as far
- 1:38:58Speaker 3: as the like it they again there's no doubting himself
- 1:39:02Speaker 3: like he's in the right their love is true like
- 1:39:05Speaker 3: everything makes sense in that first one the way that
- 1:39:06Speaker 3: it is if you add in that doubting part in
- 1:39:10Speaker 3: the non-healing part it doesn't make any sense so Like,
- 1:39:13Speaker 3: the only time he should be hurt is they figure
- 1:39:14Speaker 3: out the weird thing with the crow, and then they
- 1:39:16Speaker 3: hurt the crow, and then he hurts. So, again, it's
- 1:39:18Speaker 3: all a real balanced version of why. It's a logical
- 1:39:22Speaker 3: reason why. Oh, the crow was protecting him, more or less.
- 1:39:25Speaker 3: But no, like, behind the scenes, you know, oh, this
- 1:39:28Speaker 3: is this rule, and you have to follow this rule,
- 1:39:30Speaker 3: and if you start to, you know, if you don't
- 1:39:32Speaker 3: believe you can fly, you're gonna fall.
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: Right, right.
- 1:39:35Speaker 3: Clap your hands, people, if you believe in the love
- 1:39:38Speaker 3: of the crow, and he'll come back.
- 1:39:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: Yeah yeah well it was cool i like that.
- 1:39:42Speaker 3: Line it makes no sense in that first one but
- 1:39:43Speaker 3: this one it actually makes sense to work that kind
- 1:39:46Speaker 3: of stuff in yeah because he doubts the relationship from
- 1:39:49Speaker 3: the midway point in this movie he's just like right
- 1:39:52Speaker 3: yeah i don't know about this yeah it was a
- 1:39:54Speaker 3: weird turn in the theater i was just like what
- 1:39:57Speaker 3: what are they doing but as it went on i'm
- 1:39:59Speaker 3: like that kind of makes sense in this story not
- 1:40:02Speaker 3: in the original but it makes sense in this story.
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: No, I really like the line, the opposite of love
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: is not hate, but doubt. I thought that was great.
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: I thought that was very true. And why love is
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: so fragile. And so I thought that was great. I
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: liked what they were doing. I liked the motive of
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: the bad guy, because basically he's terrified of going to hell,
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: and he will do anything to to keep himself.
- 1:40:37Speaker 3: I did set up a little piece of this backstory
- 1:40:40Speaker 3: that like, he's been around for hundreds of years.
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:40:43Speaker 3: Right. He's just keep for some reason, keeps suckering in
- 1:40:47Speaker 3: these like talented young girls. Yeah. Yeah. I guess it
- 1:40:51Speaker 3: was exactly why, but like, right. You just pick any
- 1:40:54Speaker 3: random dude on the street, I suppose, but he just
- 1:40:56Speaker 3: likes hanging out with talented young girls and then stealing
- 1:40:59Speaker 3: their souls.
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: Yeah. I guess that's because of their innocence. Uh, yeah,
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: it would seem like they're, they seem, you know, like,
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: They've just been pouring themselves into this talent. So they're uncorrupted.
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: So it's a bigger win for the devil if he
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: can take something beautiful and really destroy it. But I
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: got the feeling that it's not like something– it's transactional
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: for him. There's no love of doing evil. He seems
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: to love the finer things in life, but.
- 1:41:31Speaker 3: He enjoys the spoils of his activity.
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: Right, right. But it's like, this is like what I
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: have to do to keep doing this. And I just
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: got the feeling that he was terrified of death, which
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: was a different motive than Michael Wincock, you know? So
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: I was going like, that's kind of nice.
- 1:41:49Speaker 3: And kind of interesting, again, in this story, to bookend, like,
- 1:41:53Speaker 3: he's such a pussy, essentially, he'll do anything to... Because
- 1:41:57Speaker 3: he's so scared of death. Meanwhile, our screw up lead
- 1:42:02Speaker 3: is just like, yeah, I don't even know that this
- 1:42:04Speaker 3: is the right decision, but I'm committing to die for
- 1:42:08Speaker 3: this girl that I don't know very well. Like if
- 1:42:11Speaker 3: I'm willing to sell my soul to hell. Basically just
- 1:42:16Speaker 3: because I feel like it's the right thing to do.
- 1:42:18Speaker 3: So it just makes him so much more impressive than
- 1:42:20Speaker 3: our like loser bad guy that's like.
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: So afraid of death. He's been running for hundreds of years.
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: Hundreds of years from it. He's been running from the consequences.
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: And our new crow, he's like going like, I'm going
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: to finally stand for something and take the consequences for
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: standing up for something, you know? Death is death.
- 1:42:42Speaker 3: And I'm going to deal with it.
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: That's right.
- 1:42:44Speaker 3: Whereas our other guy won't get anywhere near it, essentially.
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: That's right. One other little line I got that I
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: really liked was when he was about to kill the
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: not Tilda Swinton character.
- 1:42:58Speaker 3: Well, when you can't afford Tilda Swinton.
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: She was a good stand-in. She was a good stand-in.
- 1:43:03Speaker 3: I saw her, and I was like, is that what
- 1:43:05Speaker 3: they're going for? Because it very much....
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: Right. Right. I, well, she goes like, she goes like,
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: he goes like, why were you doing this? And she
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: was just was like going like, it's, it's just, you know,
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: the bad that's going on and it's just a little
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: bit at a time and you're not really involved in it.
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: And then just a little by little, and then it
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: swallows you up. And I was going like, that is
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: a great description of, I bet there's.
- 1:43:34Speaker 3: A lot of people that that's where their lives end.
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: That's how it happens. Like, how am I in this situation?
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: This is not my.
- 1:43:44Speaker 3: Much like our two leads, more or less. Like, they
- 1:43:48Speaker 3: start out wanting to end up the screw-ups.
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: That they are. But, like, you know, little by little.
- 1:43:53Speaker 3: It's like, oh, I'm gonna do this. I'm gonna make
- 1:43:55Speaker 3: this decision. I'm gonna do some more drugs. I'm gonna
- 1:43:57Speaker 3: go break in this place. I'm gonna, you know, they
- 1:44:00Speaker 3: continue to make worse and worse decisions. And the next
- 1:44:02Speaker 3: thing you know, that's all their life is.
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: Like, it is just this.
- 1:44:07Speaker 3: concentrated version of every bad decision they've made and here
- 1:44:11Speaker 3: they are stuck in rehab together right right like government
- 1:44:15Speaker 3: enforced rehab you know you've already been arrested god knows
- 1:44:19Speaker 3: how many times you're such a junkie we're sending you here.
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: And so but it was a cool that was a
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: cool mirror in that you know the lead that woman
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: was going like look I'm as much a prisoner of
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: my bad decisions as anybody you know And so it
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: was kind of this fatalistic view of, you know, it's
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: like how what people are or the sum of their decisions.
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: But you're just sometimes just like making the best decision
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: at the moment. But sometimes those decisions are just wrong decisions.
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: And sometimes you're making a bad decision to cover another
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: bad decision, you know, because it's I don't know. I
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: don't know. Now it's my life. Hold on. This is
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: what I'm saying, man.
- 1:45:10Speaker 3: I've made a lot of stupid decisions and look where
- 1:45:13Speaker 3: I am.
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: This is what I'm saying. There's just sometimes you go like,
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: I don't know how I got here. I see the
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: train of events that happened. I see some bad decisions
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: I made, but I'm going like, you know, I wouldn't
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: say I set out to be a bad person though,
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: you know? And so I thought that was really, they
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: just give it, a line, you know, of like how
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: evil people get evil or how messed up people get
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: messed up, you know, and just like, you know, kind
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: of like ignoring, you know, there's wrong things going on,
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: but you don't, you're not directly involved.
- 1:45:54Speaker 3: And it's benefiting you, so why not just shut up
- 1:45:57Speaker 3: and go along with it? Right. Just keep shutting up
- 1:46:01Speaker 3: and going along with it in your deep, deep, That's right.
- 1:46:05Speaker 3: A lot of people get themselves into that.
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: I think so. I think so. So the fact that,
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: you know, I got something out of this other than like, uh,
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: what a crappy crew.
- 1:46:18Speaker 3: I mean, that's more than you're going to say about
- 1:46:20Speaker 3: the other three movies. The other sequels don't really give
- 1:46:26Speaker 3: you something to think about except, Oh God, what are
- 1:46:28Speaker 3: they doing here? Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: And we'll just say, you know, and the fact that, um, we'll,
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: we'll talk about the other side real quick. Just the
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: train station. I thought I was going to say.
- 1:46:41Speaker 3: What is your thoughts on the limbo world that he
- 1:46:43Speaker 3: ended up in?
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: I thought it looked cool, but I thought it was
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: really funny that the, that the, his little guide that
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: he says, the first thing he says, like, you would
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: think we would have thought of something better.
- 1:46:54Speaker 3: That was just in the margins in the production notes.
- 1:46:59Speaker 3: And then they actually forgot and said that as a line. Like,
- 1:47:03Speaker 3: oh shit, that was in parentheses on the side of
- 1:47:05Speaker 3: the script. They could have come up with something better
- 1:47:08Speaker 3: for this scene, but.
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: Alright, whatever. A train station?
- 1:47:12Speaker 3: I couldn't even tell. Sometimes I feel like it's a
- 1:47:15Speaker 3: train station. Sometimes it's like they're in the middle of
- 1:47:17Speaker 3: building a skyscraper and they stopped and then Let in
- 1:47:21Speaker 3: some water and weeds. Like, I don't know what it is.
- 1:47:25Speaker 3: Are we on a bridge? I don't know where we are. Like,
- 1:47:28Speaker 3: it's just a weird otherworldly place. And I don't know
- 1:47:32Speaker 3: what I think of it.
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: It's kind of like it's kind of like I know
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: you waited, you know, you crow fans have waited like
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: a thousand years for a big budget reboot where we
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: can see the other side. But this is all we
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: could think of.
- 1:47:44Speaker 3: Because i think the other one just appears to him
- 1:47:47Speaker 3: like i think he just like hangs out in the
- 1:47:48Speaker 3: graveyard and then the skull cowboy shows up and gives
- 1:47:51Speaker 3: him some rules and whatnot but yeah it's like we
- 1:47:53Speaker 3: don't get the weird limbo world that we keep keep
- 1:47:57Speaker 3: that's the thing he keeps going back there he keeps
- 1:47:59Speaker 3: dying and ending up in there which is another weird
- 1:48:02Speaker 3: in-between thing that i'm like this is definitely different than
- 1:48:05Speaker 3: what they were doing the first time because we never
- 1:48:07Speaker 3: have an Like, it's almost like Groundhog Day. He keeps
- 1:48:10Speaker 3: screwing up and like, oops.
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: Back here again.
- 1:48:13Speaker 3: Time to start over. Send him back up.
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, so I thought the train
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: station was fine. I thought it was serviceable. i like
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: that they had some guy giving you some some feedback
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: and some rules and raising the stakes for him. I
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: thought it was fine.
- 1:48:27Speaker 3: And he's not like a super all-powerful, godlike character. He
- 1:48:31Speaker 3: seems like, again, we've almost entered into Beetlejuice world, where
- 1:48:34Speaker 3: in the other world, this is like civil servant duty.
- 1:48:37Speaker 3: He's just like, I drew the short straw, and I
- 1:48:40Speaker 3: gotta go talk to this guy at a train station
- 1:48:42Speaker 3: about rules and yeah throw him into a puddle six
- 1:48:46Speaker 3: or eight.
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: Times yeah yeah like.
- 1:48:48Speaker 3: It feels like this is his job like he does
- 1:48:50Speaker 3: once again his job that he's not thrilled about what
- 1:48:53Speaker 3: he has to do but this is day in day
- 1:48:56Speaker 3: out i gotta go talk to curry this up guy
- 1:48:58Speaker 3: because i got another guy at a broken down building
- 1:49:01Speaker 3: on the other side of town i gotta.
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: Go right so right right yeah no i think he's
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: uh He's kind of like the social worker for these
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: guys coming in. It's like, look, okay. He's like, he's
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: like doing a plea bargain for him. He's like, look,
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: you can do this.
- 1:49:14Speaker 3: I gotta go help. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: You know, you can do this. You can get that.
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: All right. But you got to give us something if
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: you want that, you know, you know, it's like, you know,
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: you know, there's gotta be some balance around here, you know?
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: I liked, I'm just going through these, these 10, 11
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: quotes I've got here. I've got one. OK, go for it.
- 1:49:34Speaker 3: Because you mentioned the violence in the original. Yeah. What
- 1:49:37Speaker 3: do you think about the gore? Because this was full
- 1:49:39Speaker 3: on horror movie gore throughout this movie.
- 1:49:43Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: I have a love of gore and I also have
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: a love of posh settings getting all fucked up. All right.
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: I like I like to see it.
- 1:49:56Speaker 3: I like.
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: Break and stuff all right i like to see stuff
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: i like to see i like to see a table
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: of fine china get body slammed and i just at
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: a visceral level i like to see nice things get
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: ruined okay and so um uh i as much as
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: i and i love that action sequence at the end
- 1:50:19Speaker 1: of the first crow i think it is like a
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: perfect freaking thing i mean again i was.
- 1:50:25Speaker 3: Looking back at that comparatively because that's one of the
- 1:50:29Speaker 3: reasons i also wanted to go back and re-watch the
- 1:50:31Speaker 3: first one because i'd seen people like sort of making
- 1:50:35Speaker 3: fun of the fact that like he just starts killing
- 1:50:38Speaker 3: all these other people and they're like weren't you supposed
- 1:50:41Speaker 3: to just be killing the guys who killed you and
- 1:50:45Speaker 3: by the end he's like taking out 28 guys for
- 1:50:48Speaker 3: no good reason that's true all right that might be
- 1:50:51Speaker 3: different And I mean, it is kind of rewatching the
- 1:50:54Speaker 3: first one. It is like, he's pretty much just focused
- 1:50:57Speaker 3: on those four guys. And like, even when you get
- 1:51:00Speaker 3: to the big shootout scene with the drug dealers, he
- 1:51:03Speaker 3: walks in and he's like, Hey guys, I just want him. And, like,
- 1:51:07Speaker 3: he really was not there to kill Wincott, you know?
- 1:51:09Speaker 3: He was like, I'm here for this mental challenge guy. And, like,
- 1:51:13Speaker 3: if you hand him over to me, I'm walking out
- 1:51:16Speaker 3: of here. I'll go kill him and be on my
- 1:51:17Speaker 3: merry fucking way.
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: And that's actually something I got out of it this
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: time was that he, once he found out, I guess,
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: that Wincott was the guy that was behind everything.
- 1:51:27Speaker 3: Then he had to add him to his list, essentially. But, like, originally.
- 1:51:31Speaker 3: And the same thing with all those guys. He's like,
- 1:51:33Speaker 3: I don't want any of you guys. I'm here for
- 1:51:35Speaker 3: that one guy. Okay. And that's my job. That's my
- 1:51:38Speaker 3: redemption is take out these guys so I can move
- 1:51:41Speaker 3: on and be with the one that I love. You know,
- 1:51:43Speaker 3: it's like it was more of like, here's my list.
- 1:51:46Speaker 3: All I'm here for is revenge on these specific people.
- 1:51:49Speaker 3: And that's it. I don't care about you being bad.
- 1:51:52Speaker 3: Because the other people that were bad, he was trying to, like,
- 1:51:54Speaker 3: he'd rough them up. Like, again, our pawn shop owner
- 1:51:57Speaker 3: is an asshole. And he knows he's feeding off people.
- 1:52:00Speaker 3: But he doesn't kill them.
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: He could have. He almost does.
- 1:52:03Speaker 3: But he like kind of gives him a chance he's
- 1:52:05Speaker 3: like he could have just killed him you know point
- 1:52:08Speaker 3: blank but instead he's like i'm gonna let you live
- 1:52:12Speaker 3: so you can go tell them i'm gonna kill the
- 1:52:13Speaker 3: rest of them and then same thing with her mom
- 1:52:16Speaker 3: like i love the moment when he like oozes drugs
- 1:52:18Speaker 3: out of her yeah that was cool again he's not
- 1:52:20Speaker 3: he doesn't go and beat the hell out of her
- 1:52:22Speaker 3: he's just like look why don't you be a good
- 1:52:24Speaker 3: mom and quit being a damn junkie right right so
- 1:52:27Speaker 3: like again he's just trying to send people on the
- 1:52:30Speaker 3: right path that he's there to, you know, he'll rough
- 1:52:32Speaker 3: them up if he needs to, but he's not there
- 1:52:34Speaker 3: to murder everyone that gets in his way versus this time.
- 1:52:38Speaker 3: I don't think he cares.
- 1:52:40Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: Listen, I think I get from the feeling that he
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: is resigned and this new one, he is resigned that
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: he's got to get this main bad guy, Danny Houston. Okay. And,
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: but he doesn't seem to be taking any action. pleasure
- 1:52:59Speaker 1: he looks like he's dead inside he knows he is
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: damned and he's going to do the thing that he
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: said he's going to do and he's not going to
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: let anybody stop him.
- 1:53:11Speaker 3: Anyone who gets in his way anyway he gets in
- 1:53:14Speaker 3: his way but there's so many guys along the way
- 1:53:16Speaker 3: even before the big finale that i'm just like just
- 1:53:19Speaker 3: random dudes in the apartment cops yeah they're kind of
- 1:53:23Speaker 3: dirty too so like everybody's a horrible person in this
- 1:53:27Speaker 3: movie so who cares if they die But it is
- 1:53:29Speaker 3: funny that he doesn't seem to worry. Even though he
- 1:53:31Speaker 3: gets way more of the handed to him rules, he
- 1:53:35Speaker 3: doesn't worry about that shit. He's just like, oh, you're here? Eh, whatever.
- 1:53:38Speaker 3: Time to die. Well, I'm already dead. Why don't you
- 1:53:41Speaker 3: be dead too?
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: I was not bothered by it.
- 1:53:45Speaker 3: I wasn't bothered by it. It's just a story beat
- 1:53:48Speaker 3: that's different, I feel like. Or adds a different feeling
- 1:53:51Speaker 3: to it because this one is just like, we're here
- 1:53:54Speaker 3: to take out everybody in the way who gives a shit.
- 1:53:58Speaker 3: Whereas the other one almost seemed like he was just
- 1:54:00Speaker 3: sticking to the plan. You know, this guy's just like,
- 1:54:03Speaker 3: I'm going back. Chaos abounds. Like who cares what happens
- 1:54:08Speaker 3: along the way, who I take out. I got to
- 1:54:10Speaker 3: get this bad guy because he's screwing things up here.
- 1:54:13Speaker 3: And maybe I'll save my girlfriend along the way. But yeah,
- 1:54:16Speaker 3: it just seems like for the one who got the
- 1:54:18Speaker 3: rules handed to him by some weird guy in a
- 1:54:20Speaker 3: train station, like he also doesn't worry about those rules
- 1:54:24Speaker 3: versus Brandon, like add sort of a checklist. And he's like,
- 1:54:27Speaker 3: I'm just here for this one thing and that's it. Like, so,
- 1:54:29Speaker 3: I don't know. It's just a different, again, it's just
- 1:54:32Speaker 3: a different way of looking at it.
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: So I think it adds a different tone.
- 1:54:35Speaker 3: To this movie, which is already like super dark and gory. Yeah.
- 1:54:40Speaker 3: The fact that like his, like with Brandon's again, it's
- 1:54:43Speaker 3: 1994 special effects. So you're seeing closing up wounds or
- 1:54:47Speaker 3: iffy at best, but they're fine. They're serviceable. You know,
- 1:54:51Speaker 3: it does what they need to do versus here. full-on
- 1:54:54Speaker 3: horror movie like his guts are spilling out and you're
- 1:54:58Speaker 3: just like okay this is a different version dude i
- 1:55:02Speaker 3: love some visceral gore and i i saw him on
- 1:55:06Speaker 3: this kamikaze mission at the end I love that ending, really. Again,
- 1:55:16Speaker 3: I don't even know how I feel about it, except
- 1:55:18Speaker 3: I was so entertained. It's a good thing there was
- 1:55:21Speaker 3: almost no one in the theater, because I was laughing.
- 1:55:24Speaker 3: I was having so much fun. I was loving that
- 1:55:29Speaker 3: whole finale. And I don't know that there were four
- 1:55:34Speaker 3: other people in my theater. And I don't know if
- 1:55:36Speaker 3: they were concerned that they were in the theater with
- 1:55:38Speaker 3: me by the end of it.
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: Dude, I was in the theater by myself, tackling like
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: a hyena. That was me!
- 1:55:46Speaker 3: I was having so much fun.
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: Because it just.
- 1:55:49Speaker 3: Dialed to 11 by the time he gets to the opera.
- 1:55:54Speaker 1: I like that it wasn't industrial. I like that it
- 1:55:58Speaker 1: was opera, intercut. I was going like, this is big budget, highfalutin,
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: cutting in scenes of a cool opera.
- 1:56:07Speaker 3: Isn't this dramatic?
- 1:56:08Speaker 1: Yeah. Isn't this dramatic and operatic? And they cranked it
- 1:56:12Speaker 1: up to operatic levels of violence.
- 1:56:16Speaker 3: First of all, is that opera a real thing? Because
- 1:56:19Speaker 3: I want to go see it.
- 1:56:19Speaker 1: I want to go see that. I'm not into opera,
- 1:56:21Speaker 1: but that one looked great.
- 1:56:22Speaker 3: That one looked awesome. So it was perfectly suited to
- 1:56:26Speaker 3: our creepy, gory world. But yeah. The other thing, as
- 1:56:30Speaker 3: he gets to the opera, tell me that entire segment
- 1:56:35Speaker 3: doesn't exist in a pre-John Wick world. Because it was
- 1:56:39Speaker 3: the most John Wick shit I have seen outside of
- 1:56:42Speaker 3: John Wick or Atomic Blonde. So like outside of that
- 1:56:47Speaker 3: little world, like this is, I guess, like the wake
- 1:56:50Speaker 3: of that now. Like we're starting to see movies that
- 1:56:52Speaker 3: are like, yeah, we're going to do kind of like that,
- 1:56:54Speaker 3: only our way. So it's like they're doing it Crow style,
- 1:56:57Speaker 3: but it's also like the most John Wick shit I've
- 1:56:59Speaker 3: ever seen. And I'm not saying that is a bad thing.
- 1:57:02Speaker 3: I think John Wick movies, from the action perspective, again,
- 1:57:06Speaker 3: I think they are diminishing as you get further away
- 1:57:08Speaker 3: from that original because there's so much heart in that original.
- 1:57:11Speaker 3: And later he's just beating people's ass. So this one
- 1:57:14Speaker 3: is just, let's focus on the beating people's ass and
- 1:57:17Speaker 3: do it like so brutally. Like that's the laughing is
- 1:57:21Speaker 3: like the extent that they were going to to make it.
- 1:57:24Speaker 3: the most violent death for every one of these assholes
- 1:57:27Speaker 3: that came at him.
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: Dude, dude. I was watching the 94 one going like, man,
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: movies used to be so violent, you know? And then
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: I went to go see this remake, and I was
- 1:57:36Speaker 1: going like, holy shit.
- 1:57:39Speaker 3: I mean, it was violent, but again, it was shooting
- 1:57:41Speaker 3: people from across the room violent. Versus the, we're going
- 1:57:44Speaker 3: to get up close and personal with their insides now.
- 1:57:48Speaker 3: The gore level on that one was just. Again, you
- 1:57:52Speaker 3: can tell the budget's a little more to work with.
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: A little more to work with. And the CG is
- 1:57:58Speaker 1: a little bit more refined, so it doesn't look too wonky.
- 1:58:01Speaker 3: There's still a little more CG than I was. Oh,
- 1:58:03Speaker 3: CG blood always looks bad. So I wish they could
- 1:58:06Speaker 3: have toned down the CG blood and just splattered a
- 1:58:08Speaker 3: little more with real blood. But yeah, that's just personal.
- 1:58:12Speaker 1: I wasn't taken out. Like there was a movie a
- 1:58:15Speaker 1: few years back, Renfield with Nicolas Cage, where the blood,
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: the blood just looked like cartoon blood. It didn't seem
- 1:58:22Speaker 1: to touch anything and get on anybody. And I got him.
- 1:58:27Speaker 3: Yeah. This one definitely was gory and messy and, you know,
- 1:58:32Speaker 3: it just also got an extra tweaking of CG blood
- 1:58:35Speaker 3: for some reason.
- 1:58:36Speaker 1: Right, right. Him, you know, the big spoiler, or the
- 1:58:41Speaker 1: big gag in the movie was just like him... pushing
- 1:58:44Speaker 1: the blade through the guy's face.
- 1:58:47Speaker 3: Well, again, one of my favorite moves ever. I feel
- 1:58:50Speaker 3: like I've seen versions of this before, but him stabbing
- 1:58:53Speaker 3: through himself to get to the guy behind him.
- 1:58:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:58:56Speaker 3: And then following that up with another, like, body slam
- 1:58:59Speaker 3: with a blade through me. I was like, dude, this
- 1:59:02Speaker 3: is hardcore. Like, this is what I'm looking for.
- 1:59:04Speaker 1: This guy's having so much fun. What I liked about
- 1:59:08Speaker 1: it also, one of my big points was, in the original,
- 1:59:12Speaker 1: you've got Brandon Lee, son of Bruce Lee doing action sequences.
- 1:59:19Speaker 1: So even though his character is like this, you know,
- 1:59:23Speaker 1: even though his character is like this, you know, sad musician,
- 1:59:27Speaker 1: he's a pretty rock star. He is also an expert
- 1:59:32Speaker 1: mixed martial artist. All right.
- 1:59:33Speaker 3: So it would be, it's in his blood.
- 1:59:35Speaker 1: It's in his blood. And if you did the crow
- 1:59:38Speaker 1: with Brandon Lee and he wasn't that, you would want
- 1:59:41Speaker 1: your money back. If he couldn't do like spin kicks
- 1:59:43Speaker 1: and backflips and you know, all that stuff, you'd be like,
- 1:59:46Speaker 1: only I.
- 1:59:47Speaker 3: Did realize that watching this again, just to intercut with this,
- 1:59:51Speaker 3: it is interesting because it only becomes the, the big
- 1:59:55Speaker 3: noble fairy tale after he's dead. Like in the real world,
- 1:59:59Speaker 3: he's not that guy in the real world. He comes in,
- 2:00:01Speaker 3: they beat his ass and throw him out a window. Yeah.
- 2:00:04Speaker 3: He's not a super bad-ass. He really is a pretty
- 2:00:06Speaker 3: boy musician. And he comes in and wants to save
- 2:00:09Speaker 3: his girlfriend and can't. So the only way that he
- 2:00:12Speaker 3: becomes the hero is in death. Like, he comes back,
- 2:00:16Speaker 3: gets the second chance, and now he's a fucking badass.
- 2:00:20Speaker 1: Right, he's kind of got crow powers.
- 2:00:22Speaker 3: Yeah, he's got, I mean, he really does, because he, like,
- 2:00:24Speaker 3: throws people across the room. So he, like, he has
- 2:00:26Speaker 3: crow powers. He's got Logan powers, because he heals himself.
- 2:00:30Speaker 1: Like, he's just indestructible for.
- 2:00:32Speaker 3: Most of the movie and just beats people's ass. And, like,
- 2:00:34Speaker 3: that's what makes him... really cool for us, but, like,
- 2:00:38Speaker 3: in the real world, in that window of two minutes
- 2:00:40Speaker 3: that we see him, I'm like, he's not that guy.
- 2:00:43Speaker 1: That's a good point.
- 2:00:43Speaker 3: So that was interesting, like, re-watching it this time, realizing that, like,
- 2:00:47Speaker 3: he wasn't always badass Brandon Lee in the story. In
- 2:00:50Speaker 3: the beginning, he's just a dork that shows up in
- 2:00:53Speaker 3: the wrong place in the wrong time and, like, wants
- 2:00:56Speaker 3: to save his girlfriend and is unsuccessful.
- 2:00:58Speaker 1: And, like, that's part of the tragedy.
- 2:01:00Speaker 3: I'm like, he doesn't save his girlfriend. His girlfriend gets...
- 2:01:05Speaker 3: I forget how much there's like, oh, and rape. Yay, fun.
- 2:01:07Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:01:08Speaker 3: I try to block that part out of the original,
- 2:01:10Speaker 3: but no, that's realistic. Those are horrible guys, and that's
- 2:01:13Speaker 3: exactly what they would have done. So that part is
- 2:01:16Speaker 3: a little harder to take when you love these two
- 2:01:19Speaker 3: the way that you do.
- 2:01:20Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Yeah, another reason I'm glad I didn't
- 2:01:23Speaker 1: watch it with my kids. Yeah, really.
- 2:01:26Speaker 3: But then fast forward to this world where it's like, yeah,
- 2:01:29Speaker 3: he's just.
- 2:01:30Speaker 1: He is.
- 2:01:31Speaker 3: He just becomes, like you said, he's on a mission.
- 2:01:34Speaker 3: Like he's there to go through everybody. Like he's there
- 2:01:39Speaker 3: with damned and determined, literally damned and determined. I am
- 2:01:43Speaker 3: dead already and you're all coming with me.
- 2:01:46Speaker 1: That's right. That's right. I like that take on it.
- 2:01:49Speaker 1: And I like that, you know, he wasn't great at it.
- 2:01:52Speaker 1: He was not like, you know, Brandon Lee gets like
- 2:01:55Speaker 1: shot and everything, but he's very adept at killing people and,
- 2:02:00Speaker 1: I got the feeling that this seemed like a normal
- 2:02:04Speaker 1: guy with indestructible powers taking out a room of people.
- 2:02:10Speaker 1: It wasn't... It was messy. It wasn't choreo. It didn't
- 2:02:14Speaker 1: feel like, you know, John Woo to me. It felt
- 2:02:18Speaker 1: like real ham-fisted, you know, street-fighting, uh, just kind of
- 2:02:26Speaker 1: improvising it, you know, he's just like, I'm going to
- 2:02:29Speaker 1: walk up to this guy. I want to do this, but, um,
- 2:02:32Speaker 1: you know, if it wasn't for my, you know, superpowers, basically.
- 2:02:37Speaker 3: The ultimate version, did you ever see blue ruin?
- 2:02:40Speaker 1: Blue ruin.
- 2:02:41Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. I did. I love blue ruin, but it
- 2:02:43Speaker 3: is that is like, here's a normal dork. Here's a
- 2:02:46Speaker 3: regular old guy and shit goes wrong. And like, he
- 2:02:50Speaker 3: wants to get revenge. But what if you're a normal
- 2:02:53Speaker 3: dorky guy who's not a martial artist, who's not a
- 2:02:56Speaker 3: gun-toting superhero, who doesn't have powers, and you still want
- 2:03:01Speaker 3: to carry out vengeance, you know? And it's like, everything
- 2:03:04Speaker 3: goes wrong for this guy. Yeah. But he still keeps
- 2:03:08Speaker 3: at it because he's just so determined. And that's kind
- 2:03:11Speaker 3: of what this is, only they gave him superpowers. Right. Right.
- 2:03:14Speaker 1: Right. So it wasn't like he became somebody else when
- 2:03:17Speaker 1: he became the crow. He's just the same guy. But
- 2:03:20Speaker 1: now just bullets won't stop him.
- 2:03:22Speaker 3: He doesn't stop. He just keeps going. And that's what
- 2:03:26Speaker 3: makes this fun is like these guys are just getting
- 2:03:28Speaker 3: mowed down right and left and like they're still coming.
- 2:03:31Speaker 3: Like it's a video game of like somewhere off screen.
- 2:03:33Speaker 3: They're regenerating a new batch of dorks and like they
- 2:03:37Speaker 3: just keep coming at him. And he just, he's getting
- 2:03:40Speaker 3: his ass kicked, but doesn't care. He's like, I'm gonna keep,
- 2:03:43Speaker 3: because every one of them shoots him and stabs him. Like,
- 2:03:45Speaker 3: he keeps getting hurt every time. And he's like, don't care.
- 2:03:49Speaker 3: Still going up these stairs. Like, I'm gonna take out
- 2:03:51Speaker 3: whoever I need to. And I'm like, that's the, like,
- 2:03:54Speaker 3: I'm damned and don't give a shit.
- 2:03:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:03:58Speaker 3: It works so well in that scene. It's a weird
- 2:04:01Speaker 3: scene in context with the rest of the movie, but
- 2:04:02Speaker 3: I'm like, I don't care because it's so much fun.
- 2:04:05Speaker 1: It's so much fun.
- 2:04:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:04:07Speaker 1: Yeah, and you got a feeling from the bad guys.
- 2:04:09Speaker 1: I know they're just, like, stop bad guys, but I
- 2:04:10Speaker 1: get the feeling that these bad guys are used to
- 2:04:13Speaker 1: getting their way.
- 2:04:14Speaker 3: And they are, again, like, it's like, it should be
- 2:04:17Speaker 3: an issue because he's murdering all these dudes, but they're also, like,
- 2:04:20Speaker 3: action movie rules. They're thugs. They're working for the bad guy.
- 2:04:23Speaker 3: They're equally as bad. They gotta go.
- 2:04:26Speaker 1: That's right. Okay, so, I think I've almost gotten through
- 2:04:30Speaker 1: all my notes here and everything, but I would say
- 2:04:33Speaker 1: I really liked, um, they played this song by The Veils.
- 2:04:37Speaker 1: uh i guess it was like him walking uh through
- 2:04:41Speaker 1: it was like i guess at a certain point where
- 2:04:44Speaker 1: he's at this crossroads of should i do this or
- 2:04:46Speaker 1: not or i don't know but they play the it's
- 2:04:48Speaker 1: like a long you know miami vice driving through the
- 2:04:51Speaker 1: city to the september hill collins scene but they just
- 2:04:55Speaker 1: played almost the entire song of uh by the veils
- 2:04:58Speaker 1: uh it's called uh i can't remember now Did the.
- 2:05:01Speaker 3: Electro drums kick in at that specific moment and make
- 2:05:05Speaker 3: it awesome?
- 2:05:09Speaker 1: It was called Total Depravity.
- 2:05:13Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:05:14Speaker 1: It was the name of the song. It was a
- 2:05:15Speaker 1: good song.
- 2:05:16Speaker 3: The songs were interesting in this one. Yeah, they're totally
- 2:05:19Speaker 3: different vibes from what, you know, even normal movies today.
- 2:05:23Speaker 3: It was like kind of different than I expected. Yeah.
- 2:05:25Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. And they actually played a song from one
- 2:05:29Speaker 1: of these bands that, a band that came out in
- 2:05:32Speaker 1: the last decade. So I could call them a new band.
- 2:05:36Speaker 1: They played a song by this, probably my new favorite
- 2:05:40Speaker 1: band was a band called Cold Cave. And they, it's
- 2:05:46Speaker 1: a real gothy band, you know.
- 2:05:47Speaker 2: And everything.
- 2:05:47Speaker 1: But I love them. I love them. And they're coming
- 2:05:50Speaker 1: out with a new album and I'm all excited and everything.
- 2:05:53Speaker 1: So there was a, It was a, they were like, cool.
- 2:05:57Speaker 1: They got the good taste to play cold cave for me.
- 2:05:59Speaker 3: You know, the other thing on the, on the random
- 2:06:05Speaker 3: weirdos running up to him to kill him in there.
- 2:06:07Speaker 3: This was just a casting choice that I was questioning
- 2:06:12Speaker 3: because most of them are like your random, like 30
- 2:06:14Speaker 3: year old dude. And it looked like a tough guy
- 2:06:16Speaker 3: who'd become a bodyguard. And then midway into him murdering people,
- 2:06:21Speaker 3: this old dude comes running to him wearing a tuxedo.
- 2:06:24Speaker 3: The dude with the beard? I'm like, that guy's like 60.
- 2:06:27Speaker 3: What is he doing being a guard?
- 2:06:31Speaker 1: I missed that.
- 2:06:32Speaker 3: He lost his retirement fund and now he's like, oh,
- 2:06:35Speaker 3: I gotta go get a job again. This sucks. He
- 2:06:38Speaker 3: just was so much older than the rest of them.
- 2:06:41Speaker 3: I was like, who is allow like just for the
- 2:06:43Speaker 3: weird difference like if it was everybody all over the
- 2:06:45Speaker 3: place in ages and body types but like this guy
- 2:06:48Speaker 3: wasn't a big dude he didn't look like a guy
- 2:06:50Speaker 3: who'd be like a protecting you kind of a dude
- 2:06:53Speaker 3: he was much older than the rest of us like
- 2:06:56Speaker 3: What happened here? That was a real weird question. I
- 2:07:01Speaker 3: was like, where did that guy come from? He was
- 2:07:02Speaker 3: on craft services and you were like, hey, the other
- 2:07:05Speaker 3: guy didn't show. You look like you've got our tux.
- 2:07:08Speaker 3: Could you put this on for me and go over
- 2:07:10Speaker 3: there and get punched in the face? Thanks.
- 2:07:12Speaker 1: Yeah, right, right. I don't remember that guy. I just
- 2:07:15Speaker 1: remember the old guy that was like one of the
- 2:07:18Speaker 1: higher up henchmen and everything. But I got, when I
- 2:07:21Speaker 1: rewatch it and everything.
- 2:07:22Speaker 3: This was, yeah, on the stairs in the middle of
- 2:07:24Speaker 3: the beating the hell out of people there's one of
- 2:07:26Speaker 3: them that when you go back and watch it again
- 2:07:27Speaker 3: be like oh yeah that guy what the hell is
- 2:07:29Speaker 3: he doing.
- 2:07:30Speaker 1: There i mean i did love the uh the the
- 2:07:34Speaker 1: guy about to blow his brains out then get his
- 2:07:36Speaker 1: arm chopped off the older guy those.
- 2:07:41Speaker 3: Like again i don't know how much i'm gonna sit
- 2:07:43Speaker 3: around watching this movie again but i feel like i'm
- 2:07:45Speaker 3: gonna revisit the going up the stairs to the opera scene.
- 2:07:48Speaker 1: Over and over again and Another one was, which I
- 2:07:52Speaker 1: thought was pretty realistic because he's not an expert fighter,
- 2:07:55Speaker 1: was when the fight in the car in the tunnel
- 2:07:58Speaker 1: and everything. I mean, it happens everywhere. in the movie,
- 2:08:00Speaker 1: so you kind of forget about it. Pretty good freaking
- 2:08:03Speaker 1: action sequence when he gets thrown out and then run
- 2:08:05Speaker 1: over by the Mack truck. That was pretty great.
- 2:08:07Speaker 3: That was pretty harsh. I mean, again, it had decent
- 2:08:14Speaker 3: action scenes in there.
- 2:08:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:08:16Speaker 3: For our director, Rupert Sanders, who did one of your
- 2:08:20Speaker 3: favorite films of all time.
- 2:08:22Speaker 1: Oh, which one?
- 2:08:23Speaker 3: Man Who Brought Us Ghost in the Shell. Speaking of
- 2:08:26Speaker 3: your favorite girl you were trying to watch.
- 2:08:27Speaker 1: Oh, right, right, right, right.
- 2:08:30Speaker 3: Which I actually, unrelated to this, I just rewatched because
- 2:08:33Speaker 3: I started thinking about it. I was like, I don't
- 2:08:35Speaker 3: remember that much about that. I kind of want to
- 2:08:37Speaker 3: watch it again. So I found a copy of it
- 2:08:39Speaker 3: and watched it again. My take is the same thing.
- 2:08:42Speaker 3: So maybe that's just this director. I finished watching that
- 2:08:45Speaker 3: movie and went, eh, it's fine. It's fine. Once again,
- 2:08:48Speaker 3: he likes things that are going to piss people off.
- 2:08:50Speaker 5: Yeah, right.
- 2:08:51Speaker 3: Because that's one of those, like, don't touch Ghost in
- 2:08:53Speaker 3: the Shell. Don't make a live action movie. Don't put
- 2:08:56Speaker 3: this white girl in here. That's right. Like, it's going
- 2:08:58Speaker 3: to piss people off no matter what you do. And
- 2:09:00Speaker 3: he's like, nah, I'm going to make that movie anyway.
- 2:09:02Speaker 3: What do I care?
- 2:09:03Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I mean, he's probably like, you know,
- 2:09:08Speaker 1: some prick or something, you know. But he's, you know,
- 2:09:12Speaker 1: in that movie, I didn't really... Ghost in the Shell
- 2:09:14Speaker 1: isn't hollow ground for me like other people.
- 2:09:16Speaker 3: Yeah, that was my thing. I went and saw it
- 2:09:18Speaker 3: in the theater, and I knew of the anime, but
- 2:09:20Speaker 3: I don't even think I'd watched it originally. I just
- 2:09:22Speaker 3: knew it was a thing, but I also knew it
- 2:09:25Speaker 3: was a big thing if you're in that world. So
- 2:09:27Speaker 3: I was like, oh, yep, this is going to piss
- 2:09:28Speaker 3: people off. And I watched it, and I was like, yeah,
- 2:09:30Speaker 3: it's fine. I was like, I don't have that, so
- 2:09:33Speaker 3: I don't care. I just watched it as a cool
- 2:09:35Speaker 3: sci-fi action movie, and I don't hate Scarlett Johansson. So
- 2:09:38Speaker 3: you can be mad at her if you want. I
- 2:09:40Speaker 3: think she did what she could. She's handed this role.
- 2:09:43Speaker 3: It almost makes sense that she looks like she does
- 2:09:46Speaker 3: because that's the whole point of the movie is they're
- 2:09:48Speaker 3: trying to hide her identity. So why wouldn't you make
- 2:09:51Speaker 3: her look like somebody different?
- 2:09:52Speaker 1: That makes sense.
- 2:09:53Speaker 3: It doesn't matter. It's going to piss people off.
- 2:09:54Speaker 1: So it's going to piss people off. I mean, it was,
- 2:09:56Speaker 1: it was, it was weird, but I mean, he did
- 2:09:59Speaker 1: go through the trouble to basically recreate in live action,
- 2:10:04Speaker 1: you know, scenes and shots. The opening scene specifically.
- 2:10:09Speaker 3: The whole thing that seems like it would only work
- 2:10:11Speaker 3: in a weird opening scene of an anime and yet
- 2:10:13Speaker 3: he tried to CG his best version of that in
- 2:10:17Speaker 3: the real world. He's committed to these ideas. I don't
- 2:10:20Speaker 3: know that people responded well, but he's committed to all
- 2:10:23Speaker 3: of this.
- 2:10:25Speaker 1: He's kind of like my favorite director, Zack Snyder, who
- 2:10:27Speaker 1: just has....
- 2:10:31Speaker 3: No, he's not delusional and insane. Oh, by the way,
- 2:10:37Speaker 3: while I was out yesterday after the movie, I saw
- 2:10:40Speaker 3: there was a pop vinyl of that robot guy from
- 2:10:44Speaker 3: your Zack Snyder movie. Oh, okay.
- 2:10:46Speaker 1: Fantastic.
- 2:10:47Speaker 3: So if you need to go grab one of those
- 2:10:49Speaker 3: as a follow-up, if you guys have been listening to
- 2:10:51Speaker 3: us yammer on about Zack Snyder movies, yeah, whatever the
- 2:10:55Speaker 3: Johnny the Robot or whatever.
- 2:10:56Speaker 1: His freaking name was.
- 2:10:57Speaker 3: Johnny the Robot. There's a pop vinyl of it. I
- 2:10:59Speaker 3: was like, really? They made pops of this? That's how
- 2:11:02Speaker 3: you know they're running out of stuff to make pop
- 2:11:04Speaker 3: vinyls of.
- 2:11:05Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 2:11:06Speaker 3: Like Zack Snyder's straight-to-Netflix movies. But anyway, no, Rupert Sanders is,
- 2:11:13Speaker 3: I think, technically a good director. Like, you're in Ghost
- 2:11:16Speaker 3: in the Shell. There's good action scenes. Like, whether you
- 2:11:19Speaker 3: like the movie or not, there's some really good, like,
- 2:11:21Speaker 3: stunts and action scenes buried in there.
- 2:11:23Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 2:11:24Speaker 3: And same thing with this. Like, for something that could
- 2:11:26Speaker 3: have gone horribly wrong, and somebody who, I guess... is
- 2:11:29Speaker 3: it known, you know, they didn't bring in the director
- 2:11:32Speaker 3: of John wick. They didn't bring in, you know, atomic
- 2:11:34Speaker 3: blonde guy. They brought this guy in and that scene
- 2:11:37Speaker 3: going up the stairs is it's getting close to that.
- 2:11:40Speaker 3: I don't know if it's white at that level, but
- 2:11:42Speaker 3: it's pretty damn close. Yeah.
- 2:11:44Speaker 1: It's, it's a, it's, it's, you know, some great for me,
- 2:11:48Speaker 1: it's a great a action sequence. And, uh, you know,
- 2:11:51Speaker 1: I mean, I'm just like, I'm just like, I think
- 2:11:55Speaker 1: I walked away from this movie, especially after talking about
- 2:11:57Speaker 1: it here. Uh, thinking that i'm not sure exactly why
- 2:12:05Speaker 1: it got so mutilated and you know i talked to
- 2:12:07Speaker 1: somebody i.
- 2:12:08Speaker 3: Told you though i think it's the title and the
- 2:12:11Speaker 3: names yeah i think if you changed all of that
- 2:12:14Speaker 3: i don't think it would have done well but i
- 2:12:16Speaker 3: think it would have just flown under the radar and
- 2:12:18Speaker 3: the people who saw it would go oh you know
- 2:12:19Speaker 3: this isn't bad and other people wouldn't see it because
- 2:12:22Speaker 3: they don't care about the crow but I think that's
- 2:12:25Speaker 3: the reason it got so much backlash is they set
- 2:12:28Speaker 3: themselves up. If you, cause there's a movie, I think
- 2:12:30Speaker 3: it's fine. I don't think it deserves the low rating
- 2:12:34Speaker 3: that it got. And I think it's more well put
- 2:12:37Speaker 3: together than any of the other sequels that they didn't
- 2:12:39Speaker 3: get upset about. So I think that's what did it.
- 2:12:42Speaker 3: They screwed themselves over. Yeah.
- 2:12:45Speaker 1: And, you know, and it's really something that I used
- 2:12:47Speaker 1: to hate. As I said at the beginning of the show,
- 2:12:48Speaker 1: I used to hate, movies that basically stand on the
- 2:12:53Speaker 1: shoulders of these little scrappy Indies and they just do
- 2:12:56Speaker 1: it with like all this money. But I really kind
- 2:12:59Speaker 1: of feel like they, you know, you kind of, it's
- 2:13:03Speaker 1: okay to do a retake on something if you've got
- 2:13:05Speaker 1: something new to do with it, you know? And I,
- 2:13:08Speaker 1: I have much more respect for this reboot than I
- 2:13:11Speaker 1: do for city of angels, you know, or some of
- 2:13:13Speaker 1: these just, you know, slap together, you know, cash-ins. I mean, it's,
- 2:13:18Speaker 1: It's such a– it's an IP. They're desperate to get
- 2:13:21Speaker 1: people back into the movie theater, so they get these IPs. And, hey,
- 2:13:25Speaker 1: I went to go see it. So, I mean, I
- 2:13:27Speaker 1: went to go see it, and I didn't go see
- 2:13:29Speaker 1: the new Shyamalan movie, which is an original idea, I guess. Again,
- 2:13:33Speaker 1: I talked about.
- 2:13:34Speaker 3: Not going to see the movies, and then I finally
- 2:13:36Speaker 3: go back to see, and I've seen Alien. I've seen–
- 2:13:39Speaker 3: The Crow, and I've seen Beetlejuice. All there are now
- 2:13:43Speaker 3: is just, let's reboot that thing that we saw that
- 2:13:46Speaker 3: one time that people kind of liked. So yeah, that's
- 2:13:49Speaker 3: what they're making now. So I mean, I don't know.
- 2:13:50Speaker 3: You can bitch about it if you want, but if
- 2:13:52Speaker 3: they're making good ones, I don't have a problem with it.
- 2:13:55Speaker 3: If they're making crappy ones, I'm going to call them out.
- 2:13:58Speaker 1: I don't really care.
- 2:13:59Speaker 3: People just get upset about the concept, and I'm like, well,
- 2:14:02Speaker 3: if you just do something good with it, I don't care.
- 2:14:05Speaker 3: Just make a good movie. That's the most important part.
- 2:14:09Speaker 1: Treat it with some respect and give us something to
- 2:14:11Speaker 1: chew on. And, and I am fine with it. I mean, the,
- 2:14:15Speaker 1: the sacred ground of the crow has been desecrated so
- 2:14:21Speaker 1: many times, so many times with so much less respect and,
- 2:14:26Speaker 1: and thought and effort, you know, that I'm going like, yeah,
- 2:14:30Speaker 1: I mean, I'm, I'm totally down with this new one.
- 2:14:33Speaker 1: And I talked to somebody, I didn't, get their full
- 2:14:37Speaker 1: take on it but i said like hey i'm gonna
- 2:14:38Speaker 1: go see the new somebody at work i said i'm
- 2:14:40Speaker 1: gonna go see that new crow movie and uh they
- 2:14:44Speaker 1: said like that movie's terrible and uh i at first
- 2:14:47Speaker 1: i gave it like a seven but then when i
- 2:14:49Speaker 1: was thinking about it you know i got like uh
- 2:14:51Speaker 1: you know i started poking holes in it and then
- 2:14:53Speaker 1: you know i i think it's a it's a I
- 2:14:57Speaker 1: was really walking into this like thinking this was going
- 2:15:00Speaker 1: to be garbage, you know. So the fact that it
- 2:15:02Speaker 1: was a competently made movie.
- 2:15:05Speaker 3: As I sat there, I was just like, I don't
- 2:15:07Speaker 3: know what it is. They were, I mean, again, taking
- 2:15:09Speaker 3: the Crow fans out of it that they have, you know,
- 2:15:12Speaker 3: the deck against you from them. But like as a
- 2:15:15Speaker 3: normal person on the street throwing yourself into this, I'm like,
- 2:15:18Speaker 3: I don't know what it is unless you just don't like.
- 2:15:21Speaker 3: the basics like you don't like oh there's too much
- 2:15:24Speaker 3: gore i don't like this character i don't like you
- 2:15:27Speaker 3: know his dumb tattoo look like i don't know what
- 2:15:30Speaker 3: they're taking from it that that upsets them so much
- 2:15:33Speaker 3: that yeah people were just i'm like there's nothing on
- 2:15:37Speaker 3: that level offensive about this unless you just don't like
- 2:15:40Speaker 3: gore or you don't like action movies or like i
- 2:15:42Speaker 3: don't know what else you're so upset about because even
- 2:15:45Speaker 3: if you if you take this out of context and
- 2:15:47Speaker 3: this no other Crow movie had ever been made. This
- 2:15:50Speaker 3: is in a void. And like, you go watch it.
- 2:15:52Speaker 3: It's fine. Like, even if you don't love it, it's fine.
- 2:15:55Speaker 3: It's a totally serviceable movie. What are you guys getting
- 2:15:58Speaker 3: so worked up about? I, exactly, dude.
- 2:16:02Speaker 6: Exactly.
- 2:16:02Speaker 1: And I was like, yeah, I'm going like, and you know,
- 2:16:06Speaker 1: it wasn't like a John Wick. I mean, it had
- 2:16:08Speaker 1: John Wick style kind of actions. Just that one scene, basically.
- 2:16:12Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. But, you know, John Wick is good.
- 2:16:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:16:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:16:15Speaker 1: Yeah. And the John, but so, but it wasn't like,
- 2:16:18Speaker 1: every five minutes an action sequence, you know, which I
- 2:16:22Speaker 1: appreciated that they gave the people some room to breathe
- 2:16:26Speaker 1: for some character development.
- 2:16:28Speaker 3: I mean, there's a lot of setup there. Like, it
- 2:16:31Speaker 3: is interesting, whereas, you know, we have no time with
- 2:16:34Speaker 3: our couple in the original. Like, we spend, what, 25
- 2:16:38Speaker 3: minutes or something of just them getting in trouble going
- 2:16:42Speaker 3: into rehab talking breaking out going on their long weekend
- 2:16:47Speaker 3: like it's just like all of that build up is
- 2:16:50Speaker 3: surprising really that like this is what they've chosen to
- 2:16:54Speaker 3: do with this action movie like it's kind of weird
- 2:16:56Speaker 3: that like they devote as much time as they do
- 2:16:59Speaker 3: to character development and in a movie like this like
- 2:17:03Speaker 3: You would think they would just crank out something and
- 2:17:06Speaker 3: not worry about it and do a ton of action scenes.
- 2:17:08Speaker 3: But there's a lot of character development and setup on
- 2:17:11Speaker 3: this thing.
- 2:17:12Speaker 7: Right.
- 2:17:12Speaker 1: So I didn't leave the movie like a John Wick movie.
- 2:17:15Speaker 1: I leave exhausted. I feel like I feel pummeled by
- 2:17:20Speaker 1: John Wick movies. All right.
- 2:17:21Speaker 3: That's our job.
- 2:17:23Speaker 1: That's right.
- 2:17:24Speaker 3: Beat you as well as the characters on screen.
- 2:17:26Speaker 1: Exactly. You feel like you've been in one of the
- 2:17:29Speaker 1: action sequence at the end of a John Wick movie
- 2:17:30Speaker 1: because I think those movies are great. as like probably
- 2:17:34Speaker 1: a web series, you know, which you can sort of
- 2:17:37Speaker 1: digest and appreciate.
- 2:17:39Speaker 3: Five minute snippets. I just went five minutes of beating
- 2:17:41Speaker 3: people's ass and then I can go back to doing
- 2:17:43Speaker 3: my stuff and I'll come back later and.
- 2:17:45Speaker 1: Watch them come back later read another chapter later you
- 2:17:49Speaker 1: know um but this one actually felt like you know
- 2:17:52Speaker 1: yeah there was enough build that i actually enjoyed the
- 2:17:58Speaker 1: action more because it wasn't just trying to be non-stop
- 2:18:01Speaker 1: every second so yeah you know.
- 2:18:04Speaker 3: And it's not polished. You watch that first one with
- 2:18:07Speaker 3: him and the cop, and he doesn't know what's going on,
- 2:18:10Speaker 3: and he's just getting shot. He has no idea what's happening,
- 2:18:15Speaker 3: and yet he's the victim in this scenario. And then
- 2:18:19Speaker 3: he's just like, oh, wait, I can heal? Hold on.
- 2:18:24Speaker 3: So it is just fumbling his way into being the
- 2:18:26Speaker 3: superhero in this movie. It is such an interesting take
- 2:18:31Speaker 3: on all these things that could be played differently or
- 2:18:35Speaker 3: generically and like they do different things with them than
- 2:18:38Speaker 3: you expect so there's something to be said for that there's.
- 2:18:40Speaker 1: Something that they tried you know you gotta give them
- 2:18:44Speaker 1: and it's not like a condescending oh you tried to
- 2:18:47Speaker 1: do something different I go like I give you I
- 2:18:49Speaker 1: give you props for trying to do something that's what I.
- 2:18:53Speaker 3: Want from anything in a franchise and this is what
- 2:18:56Speaker 3: I don't get especially in our reboot world where everything
- 2:18:58Speaker 3: has to be labeled as a reboot or a recall
- 2:19:00Speaker 3: or some sort of re it attempt at whatever that
- 2:19:04Speaker 3: worked the first time. I'm like, I don't care if
- 2:19:06Speaker 3: you stay in the franchise. I don't care if you're
- 2:19:08Speaker 3: sort of using the basic overall thing. But once you
- 2:19:11Speaker 3: get there, just do something else with it. If you
- 2:19:14Speaker 3: want the original thing, well, you already have it.
- 2:19:16Speaker 1: Go watch it.
- 2:19:17Speaker 3: It's not like this is the old days when they
- 2:19:19Speaker 3: played the movie once and you never saw it again.
- 2:19:20Speaker 1: That's right.
- 2:19:21Speaker 3: You can own it. You can have it on your phone.
- 2:19:23Speaker 3: You can walk around with it all day. It's there
- 2:19:26Speaker 3: at any moment at the touch of a finger. You
- 2:19:29Speaker 3: can watch whatever movie you ever want to watch. So
- 2:19:32Speaker 3: there's no reason for us to remake the exact same movie.
- 2:19:36Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 2:19:37Speaker 3: But if the concept is interesting and you have a
- 2:19:39Speaker 3: different spin... take it there. Like do that.
- 2:19:42Speaker 1: Like, I don't care that you're using.
- 2:19:44Speaker 3: A basic idea, but tell a different story now that
- 2:19:47Speaker 3: you're doing it. Right. That's totally what happens here. So
- 2:19:50Speaker 3: it's like, I appreciate that. I wish more franchises would
- 2:19:54Speaker 3: do that instead of trying to just rehash the same thing.
- 2:19:57Speaker 3: Let's reboot it and then do kind of the same
- 2:19:59Speaker 3: thing again. Yeah. It's like, why, why? Like, we already
- 2:20:05Speaker 3: have that. Don't do that again. Do something else. It's
- 2:20:09Speaker 3: way more interesting. That's all we're looking for. Like, I
- 2:20:12Speaker 3: don't know.
- 2:20:12Speaker 1: That's it.
- 2:20:13Speaker 3: My thoughts on it.
- 2:20:15Speaker 1: I agree. Do something else. I mean, I don't want
- 2:20:17Speaker 1: them to, like, go so far out. But if you
- 2:20:20Speaker 1: got the story, just do a different take on it.
- 2:20:25Speaker 1: Just don't pretend like it's the same.
- 2:20:26Speaker 3: Like we're doing here. If you call it a different title,
- 2:20:30Speaker 3: it's the problem that we have. Our brand recognition is
- 2:20:32Speaker 3: so burned in in some corporate brain that, like, You
- 2:20:36Speaker 3: can't stray from that. You can't tell anything that's not
- 2:20:39Speaker 3: going to come off as the thing they love. And
- 2:20:41Speaker 3: I'm like, no, if you mess with the thing they love,
- 2:20:44Speaker 3: you're going to piss them off. Like they don't ever
- 2:20:46Speaker 3: seem to get a handle on that part of it.
- 2:20:49Speaker 3: I'm like, you can't mess with the geeks like thing
- 2:20:52Speaker 3: that they love. Like that will piss them off. You
- 2:20:55Speaker 3: can give them more of the thing they love and
- 2:20:57Speaker 3: they will line up and give you money. But if
- 2:20:59Speaker 3: you mess with the thing that they already love, you're
- 2:21:02Speaker 3: going to piss people off. And like they never seem
- 2:21:04Speaker 3: to get a handle on that.
- 2:21:06Speaker 7: Right.
- 2:21:07Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:21:07Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Like Alien Covenant. Oh, like the aliens were
- 2:21:11Speaker 1: designed by this robot man. I'm like, what? You've almost
- 2:21:17Speaker 1: single-handedly ruined... You've almost made me retroactively not like Alien.
- 2:21:22Speaker 3: When we all know that they were created by the
- 2:21:24Speaker 3: Predators so that they would be the ultimate game to hunt.
- 2:21:29Speaker 3: We all know. We all know this.
- 2:21:31Speaker 1: We all know this, right?
- 2:21:34Speaker 3: Anyway. Alright, so.
- 2:21:37Speaker 1: heroin addled my mind yeah anyway go ahead but i'm sorry.
- 2:21:41Speaker 3: Well again i the only other thought i had came
- 2:21:44Speaker 3: after watching both these movies and i thought maybe that's
- 2:21:47Speaker 3: how we should round things out here okay so yesterday
- 2:21:51Speaker 3: i i get up you know i'm an old man
- 2:21:53Speaker 3: so the only time i can watch stuff is in
- 2:21:54Speaker 3: the morning otherwise i'll fall asleep so i get up
- 2:21:56Speaker 3: and have my morning movie just like you do and
- 2:21:59Speaker 3: um i'm drinking my coffee and watching the crow And
- 2:22:02Speaker 3: then afterwards, I finish, and I'm like, oh, let's go
- 2:22:04Speaker 3: make some breakfast. So I'm sitting there, and I'm making breakfast.
- 2:22:07Speaker 3: And out the back door, there's this squirrel that runs
- 2:22:12Speaker 3: up and just sits on the little fence outside the
- 2:22:15Speaker 3: back window. And then I start having these flashes of
- 2:22:18Speaker 3: Sarah talking to the crow in the 94 one. And
- 2:22:21Speaker 3: she's like, hey, what are you doing here? She has
- 2:22:25Speaker 3: whole conversations with the crow when he shows up in
- 2:22:27Speaker 3: the window. Yes. And so I look over and I'm like, hey,
- 2:22:30Speaker 3: what's up, squirrel? What you doing? So I'm like, what
- 2:22:34Speaker 3: if it was a different animal option? What if a
- 2:22:38Speaker 3: squirrel carries your soul to the other side? And like,
- 2:22:42Speaker 3: so now we're going to have the squirrel. Like you've
- 2:22:45Speaker 3: got a little shimmering squirrel on your shoulder the whole
- 2:22:48Speaker 3: time when you're beating people's ass. Do you think it
- 2:22:51Speaker 3: would work with other animals? That's my question.
- 2:22:54Speaker 1: Okay, well.
- 2:22:56Speaker 3: The squirrel.
- 2:22:57Speaker 1: I don't know if you know this about youth culture nowadays, but...
- 2:23:05Speaker 1: This is going down the furry road, isn't it? Jesus Christ, dude.
- 2:23:10Speaker 1: Furries aren't just for sexual perverts anymore. There has become
- 2:23:16Speaker 1: a disnification of furries where just people are just... You know,
- 2:23:24Speaker 1: teens and middle schoolers They're just walking around with tails and, uh, uh,
- 2:23:29Speaker 1: free masks. And, uh, you know, I would say that
- 2:23:34Speaker 1: I know some of them very well. And I, when
- 2:23:37Speaker 1: they started saying like, I'm a furry, I go like,
- 2:23:40Speaker 1: you do know that just basically means you're a, that
- 2:23:44Speaker 1: she goes like creepy perv.
- 2:23:45Speaker 3: We all know. Right.
- 2:23:46Speaker 1: Right. No, no, no, dad. It's not just creepy pervs. Okay.
- 2:23:51Speaker 1: It's just like, uh, okay. It's a lifestyle choice. All right.
- 2:23:56Speaker 1: And I go like, okay, I guess I just, in
- 2:24:00Speaker 1: my day, furry meant creepy sexual perv.
- 2:24:04Speaker 3: Well, again, originally you just had, like, team mascots. And
- 2:24:08Speaker 3: then they branched out and became something else. And, like,
- 2:24:12Speaker 3: by the time regular, I'm saying, you know, in quotes.
- 2:24:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:24:15Speaker 3: Boring people found out about it and were like, oh, well,
- 2:24:18Speaker 3: this is just nothing but creepy sex stuff. And then,
- 2:24:21Speaker 3: you know, as we branch out and, you know, a
- 2:24:24Speaker 3: whole new generation kicks in, they find other aspects of it,
- 2:24:27Speaker 3: I'm assuming.
- 2:24:28Speaker 1: That's it.
- 2:24:29Speaker 3: I'm okay with it. Will I possibly make fun of you? Yes.
- 2:24:32Speaker 1: Yeah, that's all right.
- 2:24:33Speaker 3: I make fun of everyone. I suck, so, you know,
- 2:24:36Speaker 3: it's fine. I can make fun of other people, too,
- 2:24:38Speaker 3: and they're making fun of me, so that's fine. I'm
- 2:24:41Speaker 3: hanging out with a squirrel on my shoulder. What do
- 2:24:43Speaker 3: I know? Yeah.
- 2:24:44Speaker 1: Well, I mean, I kind of see it as like,
- 2:24:46Speaker 1: you know, you know, because of like the sexual liberation
- 2:24:51Speaker 1: of everything, everybody now, you know, it's like everybody is
- 2:24:55Speaker 1: free to be what they want. I think if like you,
- 2:24:58Speaker 1: I think furry has become like the new different thing
- 2:25:01Speaker 1: that you can be because nobody cares if you're gay
- 2:25:03Speaker 1: or bi or anything anymore, you know, but whatever you are,
- 2:25:07Speaker 1: whatever it is, you know, you're do your own thing,
- 2:25:09Speaker 1: you know.
- 2:25:10Speaker 3: Which opens up all new avenues too. It's like, well,
- 2:25:13Speaker 3: here's what I want to do. And now you're not
- 2:25:16Speaker 3: really supposed to question that stuff. And that's good.
- 2:25:19Speaker 4: That's fine.
- 2:25:19Speaker 3: That's positive. You know, it's like whatever. And I've always
- 2:25:22Speaker 3: said that I'm like, whatever you're into be into as
- 2:25:25Speaker 3: long as nobody else is getting injured in the process.
- 2:25:29Speaker 3: As long as it's all on good terms, go do
- 2:25:32Speaker 3: your thing. And who cares? Like, yeah, again, I'm okay
- 2:25:35Speaker 3: with that happening in society, but there are still people
- 2:25:39Speaker 3: that want to fight it tooth and nail.
- 2:25:41Speaker 1: That's right. That's right. And really, it's become like a
- 2:25:43Speaker 1: new thing to be hate-crimed over. So, you know, because
- 2:25:48Speaker 1: you can't hate-crime somebody because of their sexual orientation because
- 2:25:51Speaker 1: you're an asshole. You got stupid ears on, though.
- 2:25:53Speaker 3: I'm going to beat your ass. Yeah.
- 2:25:55Speaker 1: You know, it's not a sink. It's a frontier that
- 2:25:57Speaker 1: has not been.
- 2:26:09Speaker 1: Shamed yet, you know, and everything. So, yes.
- 2:26:13Speaker 3: Can't we all just get along?
- 2:26:15Speaker 1: They could do a version of the crow for the
- 2:26:20Speaker 1: furry community called the squirrel.
- 2:26:24Speaker 3: All I know is That squirrel sat there for like
- 2:26:27Speaker 3: 10 minutes. I was getting to be kind of convinced
- 2:26:30Speaker 3: he was there to take me on a journey. So
- 2:26:33Speaker 3: the fact that I'm talking to you now is surprising
- 2:26:36Speaker 3: because I assumed I was going to be going off
- 2:26:38Speaker 3: with that squirrel yesterday.
- 2:26:39Speaker 4: That's right.
- 2:26:42Speaker 3: So there you go.
- 2:26:45Speaker 1: Some people say when something really, really lame happens, a
- 2:26:50Speaker 1: squirrel will bring you back.
- 2:26:54Speaker 3: When your life is really, really lame, a squirrel will
- 2:26:57Speaker 3: show up and just kind of sit there and laugh
- 2:26:59Speaker 3: at you. You're like, what an idiot. You just watched
- 2:27:02Speaker 3: a movie and you're making a breakfast burrito. What a
- 2:27:05Speaker 3: doofus you are. The squirrel laughed and ran off. Oh
- 2:27:08Speaker 3: my gosh.
- 2:27:12Speaker 1: That's a great alternate universe of the crow. Yeah, I
- 2:27:17Speaker 1: think that would totally work, man. I think you could
- 2:27:18Speaker 1: do anything.
- 2:27:19Speaker 3: There you go. So that's what I was thinking as
- 2:27:21Speaker 3: I was having my conversation with the squirrel like Sarah.
- 2:27:24Speaker 1: Awesome, dude.
- 2:27:28Speaker 3: Well, we have definitely addressed both crows and other side
- 2:27:33Speaker 3: crow avenues. Yep. Many facets in this. There was more
- 2:27:38Speaker 3: there than I expected, so good. for that movie for
- 2:27:42Speaker 3: sort of stepping up to do something.
- 2:27:43Speaker 1: Different absolutely i think i think we've actually given uh
- 2:27:48Speaker 1: this reboot and the crow franchise a fair shake of
- 2:27:54Speaker 1: analysis and you know fandom geekery so i mean i
- 2:27:57Speaker 1: think that's uh I think we got more I got
- 2:28:04Speaker 1: more out of this than I thought we would I
- 2:28:07Speaker 1: mean I liked it.
- 2:28:09Speaker 3: More than I expected in the theater but yeah I
- 2:28:12Speaker 3: kind of have way more appreciation for it now just
- 2:28:15Speaker 3: having this conversation movies.
- 2:28:18Speaker 1: Are the experience but equal part of a movie is
- 2:28:23Speaker 1: the discussion of the movie so.
- 2:28:26Speaker 3: For me geeks that we are that's yeah That's the thing.
- 2:28:30Speaker 1: It's a bad movie.
- 2:28:32Speaker 3: The regular people of the world just watch something and
- 2:28:35Speaker 3: glosses over them and they go on and have the
- 2:28:39Speaker 3: rest of their normal ass day. Geeks, that's just the
- 2:28:43Speaker 3: first step.
- 2:28:44Speaker 1: You watched it.
- 2:28:45Speaker 3: Oh, I watched it. Now, who can I talk about
- 2:28:46Speaker 3: with it? Who's going to dive into this with me?
- 2:28:50Speaker 1: Absolutely. We don't have much of a community.
- 2:28:54Speaker 3: But when we have it, we have it you know
- 2:28:57Speaker 3: it's like exactly we're a broken bunch of dorks but
- 2:29:00Speaker 3: when we get together and we find the things that
- 2:29:02Speaker 3: we both appreciate like you just.
- 2:29:04Speaker 1: Dive in and yeah absolutely that's absolutely world it's it's
- 2:29:09Speaker 1: it's it's a very important then it's then it's not
- 2:29:12Speaker 1: uh consumerism it's culture if you can have a discussion
- 2:29:18Speaker 1: about it you know so you know, a really bad
- 2:29:20Speaker 1: movie is one where you really just don't really have
- 2:29:23Speaker 1: anything to say about, you know, even if it's a
- 2:29:25Speaker 1: bad movie, if you've got nothing really to talk about afterwards,
- 2:29:29Speaker 1: then it is a disposable snicker bar. And so this,
- 2:29:33Speaker 1: this movie is.
- 2:29:34Speaker 3: Even better, like well-made movies, but just don't offer anything
- 2:29:39Speaker 3: different one way or the other. I'm just kind of like, yeah,
- 2:29:42Speaker 3: it was good.
- 2:29:43Speaker 1: It's just like, yeah. If, if, if the discussion was,
- 2:29:46Speaker 1: if the full discussion of the movie was, oh, that
- 2:29:48Speaker 1: was good. You know, like, like if it was like
- 2:29:50Speaker 1: a Bruckheimer movie, like, you know, that's good.
- 2:29:53Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. They made a movie. All right.
- 2:29:55Speaker 1: They sure did. And I really, I really forgot. I was, I,
- 2:30:01Speaker 1: I really, uh, was not thinking about my problems for
- 2:30:05Speaker 1: 90 minutes and it was loud. And then, but the day,
- 2:30:11Speaker 1: and it was, I was, but I was glad to
- 2:30:14Speaker 1: be out of it. I was glad I was glad
- 2:30:20Speaker 1: to be there and I was glad when it was
- 2:30:21Speaker 1: over now I've got.
- 2:30:22Speaker 3: Other things to do so I'm stopping this movie and
- 2:30:25Speaker 3: moving on with.
- 2:30:25Speaker 1: My life right right but if that's your discussion of
- 2:30:28Speaker 1: the movie then you know it's not I don't know
- 2:30:31Speaker 1: it doesn't say much for the movie but you know
- 2:30:34Speaker 1: the fact that we can sit and take this you
- 2:30:37Speaker 1: know crow remake and actually get something out of it
- 2:30:39Speaker 1: and actually have a real conversation about it I mean
- 2:30:41Speaker 1: for me you know that makes a good movie so.
- 2:30:44Speaker 3: Yeah definitely So I don't curse your name for suggesting
- 2:30:48Speaker 3: this as a topic.
- 2:30:50Speaker 1: Well, I thought it was very important.
- 2:30:51Speaker 3: When I was walking into the theater, it was still
- 2:30:53Speaker 3: up in the air. But as it turns out, we
- 2:30:57Speaker 3: had a good episode and we saw a nice movie.
- 2:30:59Speaker 3: So there you go.
- 2:31:01Speaker 1: That's it. That's it, man.
- 2:31:03Speaker 2: That's it.
- 2:31:03Speaker 1: What more can you get out of life, you know?
- 2:31:05Speaker 1: I mean, I think this was good. I think it
- 2:31:06Speaker 1: was good.
- 2:31:07Speaker 3: Awesome. Well, thank you for coming along on this journey.
- 2:31:11Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:31:12Speaker 3: Thank you for listening out there. If anyone made it
- 2:31:15Speaker 3: through this, hopefully you appreciate this kind of geek talk too.
- 2:31:19Speaker 3: So this is, this is what keeps us coming back.
- 2:31:21Speaker 1: So that's it.
- 2:31:23Speaker 3: All right. Good. All right. Otherwise that about does it.
- 2:31:26Speaker 3: We will return next time. Same geek feed. Thanks for listening.
- 2:31:29Speaker 1: Bye y'all.
- 2:31:49Speaker 3: As a crow flies.
- 2:31:53Speaker 1: Strike to her.
- 2:31:57Speaker 3: Why tell her something He has already.
- 2:32:29Speaker 5: Done to her.
- 2:33:21Speaker 7: Time flies as a crow flies in a straight line
- 2:33:36Speaker 7: through you not around you your life is only that
- 2:33:40Speaker 7: with which.
- 2:33:49Speaker 3: Has its way with you.
- 2:34:55Speaker 5: Hit the corner, weight the tail, pick the torer Rain, rain,
- 2:35:00Speaker 5: through the arms Swing blade, underwater Run!
- 2:35:12Speaker 2: Me!
- 2:35:12Speaker 3: Run!
- 2:35:12Speaker 1: Me!
- 2:35:12Speaker 3: Like go! Me! Yeah.
- 2:36:08Speaker 1: Am I going to like, you know, is this going
- 2:36:10Speaker 1: to be like hallowed? This is going to like, Am
- 2:36:13Speaker 1: I going to dress up as... Am I going to
- 2:36:15Speaker 1: give myself a bad haircut?
- 2:36:17Speaker 3: Are you going to get Sharpie and draw a whole
- 2:36:20Speaker 3: bunch of weird ass tattoos on yourself?
- 2:36:22Speaker 1: Absolutely. I'm probably not going to do that. I mean,
- 2:36:27Speaker 1: I'm not.
- 2:36:27Speaker 3: This Halloween is going to be such a letdown when
- 2:36:29Speaker 3: I don't see those photos.
- 2:36:31Speaker 1: I mean, everybody already looks like the crows.
- 2:36:35Speaker 3: Except they have ears and a tail.
- 2:36:39Speaker 1: The squirrel.
- 2:36:41Speaker 3: The squirrel. I've got to get this going.
- 2:36:47Speaker 1: If next time I see a picture of you, you're
- 2:36:50Speaker 1: wearing squirrel ears, I'm going like, oh, he's out.
- 2:36:52Speaker 3: See, I'm not going to bother. I'm going to do
- 2:36:54Speaker 3: the crow style, so it's just me with a squirrel
- 2:36:56Speaker 3: on my shoulder as I'm walking around. I've got vengeance
- 2:37:00Speaker 3: on my mind, like always, and I'll just happen to
- 2:37:02Speaker 3: have a squirrel on my shoulder.
- 2:37:04Speaker 1: You've got the marker, but it's drawn like the squirrel mouth.
- 2:37:13Speaker 3: Just got little squirrel teeth.
- 2:37:16Speaker 1: You got butt teeth.
- 2:37:19Speaker 2: Just carrying an.
- 2:37:20Speaker 3: Acorn around for no good reason.
- 2:37:21Speaker 1: Carrying an acorn. Throw acorns at people. I don't know.
- 2:37:25Speaker 3: Ha ha! Take that! My vengeance!
- 2:37:27Speaker 1: Ridiculous. Ridiculous. They're just like, oh God.
- 2:37:29Speaker 3: There's that weird squirrel guy again. Stay away from him.
