- 0:19I'm Jessica and this is Tibaki Rambles, where a couple of
- 0:21friends review Korean dramas, except today we are going to
- 0:25review a sea drama, a Chinese drama.
- 0:28And for this episode, I am joined by Liliana from the Tea
- 0:32and Soju podcast. How are you, Liliana?
- 0:36I'm doing great. I'm very excited to be here to
- 0:39talk about this one today. Yeah, I'm doing really well
- 0:41right now. Yeah, yeah, We were chatting
- 0:45beforehand and we are really busy little indie podcasters
- 0:48over here. We don't know how this happened,
- 0:51but the next few months are really packed for us.
- 0:54And so every time we get together though, it is so much
- 0:58fun. We have a blast and we are going
- 1:01to talk about Nothing But You, which is a Leo Wu drama.
- 1:08What had happened was we never got to review the other Leo Wu
- 1:13drama it. Didn't the long ballad the.
- 1:18Long ballad. We never did it because it would
- 1:23just wasn't that good. So then we all like sort of
- 1:25dropped it and we reviewed something else.
- 1:29I basically was like, we still have to review a Leo Wu drama
- 1:33and I want to do another sea drama for season 6.
- 1:36So I picked nothing but you. I had heard wonderful things
- 1:40about it from you, Liliana. And I was like, Liliana, do you
- 1:44want to like pop in and do nothing but you?
- 1:46And so we're here. We're going to review it.

- 2:40Nothing but you. All right, so like any other C
- 2:44drama review on the Tibock feed, this is going to be a spoiler
- 2:48ific review. We are not going to have a non
- 2:52spoiler section, so proceed at your own caution.
- 2:57We are going to spoil nothing but you.
- 2:59Whatever there is to spoil, so the My Drama List synopsis
- 3:04reads. Liang Yohan, an executive
- 3:06assistant to a powerful boss, has been stagnant in her
- 3:09position that was going nowhere. With plans to resign.
- 3:14She got her opportunity to meet Song Sang Chuan, a professional
- 3:17badminton player going through a traumatic period in his life
- 3:21which rendered him stuck. Their chance encounter sent both
- 3:24on life and career altering paths that had them first
- 3:28becoming acquaintances, then friends, and then slowly growing
- 3:31into something more. While she encouraged him to be
- 3:34the first person ever to transfer from professional
- 3:37badminton to professional tennis, he, at nearly 10 years
- 3:41her junior, provided support and uncharacteristic wisdom.
- 3:45Could these two seemingly different people ultimately
- 3:48succeed in their goals, life and love?
- 3:52So Nothing But You aired in March through April 2023.
- 3:57So happy birthday, Nothing But You.
- 3:59We are recording this at the end of March and this will air.
- 4:04This episode will air in early April.
- 4:08Sorry. Yeah.
- 4:09So it's two years old. Happy birthday to nothing but
- 4:12you. It's two years old and it's 38
- 4:14episodes long. I'm not sure why Liliana.
- 4:18Why is the show 38 episodes long?
- 4:22I don't know, I don't know. It doesn't need to be 30. 8.
- 4:27And let me tell you a very quick thing.
- 4:30So basically I I started watching this show live, right?
- 4:35This show came out at the same time as Till the End of the
- 4:39moon. Till the end of the Moon was
- 4:41airing at the same time. So I remember I had the last
- 4:47like 6 episodes of this show to watch and it took me weeks to
- 4:52finished this show because I was so in like the till the end of
- 4:56the moon boat. Yeah.
- 4:58And now thinking back, I'm like, we never needed.
- 5:01I listened because I did like a mini review of this for on
- 5:05Patreon. And I listened back.
- 5:07And one of the things that I said was this did not need to be
- 5:0938 episodes. We could have shaved off.
- 5:12Yeah, we could have shaved off a couple of episodes off of this
- 5:15one. Oh yeah, it could have been 3028
- 5:19episodes and it would have been perfectly.
- 5:22Fine. Just fine at that lane. 38
- 5:26episodes was excessive to me. The director of Nothing But You
- 5:30is Chen Chang and he's directed As Beautiful As You, Lie to
- 5:35Love, Dating in the Kitchen and Mad About You, among other
- 5:38things. Have you seen some of this
- 5:40director's work? I started and dropped as
- 5:42beautiful as you. I started and dropped lie to
- 5:45love. I finished dating in the kitchen
- 5:51the 1st 2 so as beautiful as you and lighter love are very much
- 5:55like As beautiful as you is a tan song Yoon and true Kai
- 5:59drama, but it's like very office style and I those sometimes work
- 6:07for me. Not very often light to love is
- 6:10actually a Loy and she drama, but it's the same actress that
- 6:15was in Oh my God, falling into your smile and I just don't
- 6:20really like that actress. She's very wooded on screen.
- 6:23So I was like I tried it. I tried it for Loy and she but I
- 6:27was like, no, no, not even Loy and she will hold me here.
- 6:32So yeah, and dating in the kitchen.
- 6:34I love Zalu she but yeah, I finished it.
- 6:37I actually reviewed dating in the kitchen.
- 6:40On the inside too. I finished it look dating in the
- 6:44kitchen. There's just no chemistry.
- 6:48They, the Zalushi and the male lead have a huge age gap and to
- 6:54me I just didn't see the chemistry and that made the
- 6:59drama not great for me. Even though I love Zalushi in
- 7:03it, I just didn't enjoy, you know, the drama in general.
- 7:08OK, so not a good track record for this director, but nothing
- 7:13but. Moving on, Nothing But You was
- 7:15written by Zhang Yingji and she's only written 3 projects,
- 7:20not counting Nothing But You. Those three projects are nothing
- 7:25but 30. And to be a better man.
- 7:28Have you even heard of these? Not these ones.
- 7:33All right, we're moving on. So Nothing But You stars Woo Lay
- 7:39AKA Leo Wu as Song Sunshine. He's, as we said in the Love
- 7:44Like the Galaxy episode, known as the nation's little brother.
- 7:48He's considered one of the four Little Heavenly Kings.
- 7:52He's done amidst the snowstorm of love in 2024.
- 7:56Love Like the Galaxy from 2022, The Long Ballad from 2021,
- 8:02Nirvana and Fire. He has his own production
- 8:04company, his mom helps him run it, and I think he's really
- 8:08going places. He's such a great talent.
- 8:12What do you think of Wooley? I mean, it's no surprise to
- 8:16anyone that he's one of my favorite actors in general.
- 8:19Like he has learned, and I say this all the time, he has
- 8:24learned from some of the best in the industry.
- 8:26And having watched, you know, 16 year old Roulet and Nirvana in
- 8:31Fire in 20 from 2015 and having watched a Midst a Snowstorm of
- 8:36love in 2024, it's like crazy to see his journey.
- 8:43The way he emotes on screen is just so incredibly good.
- 8:47Now, do I think his characters tend to be similar?
- 8:53Sometimes? Maybe I really want to see him
- 8:55in like a crime or something very different to what he's done
- 9:00so far. But saying that nothing but you
- 9:04is to me a very different character to love, like the
- 9:08Galaxy. That's why I say I really like
- 9:12this, because it's a very different character for him.
- 9:17But yeah, I, I like, I really like him and he's one of those
- 9:21actors that I can't wait to see what he's like in five years
- 9:24time, 10 years time. He's very choosy with his
- 9:27projects as well, because he does own his own production
- 9:32company, his mum's his manager and whatnot.
- 9:35He gets free rein to do what the heck he wants, in essence.
- 9:40So he gets to pick. He gets the privilege of like
- 9:44choosing his own projects because I feel like that is a
- 9:48little privilege sometimes. Yeah, not every artist has that.
- 9:52True. So he really is the master of
- 9:56his own career and I really, really like that about him and
- 10:00it shows in the projects that he himself kind of, you know,
- 10:03picks. Also I will say the fact that he
- 10:06plays these very cold characters, but in fact you
- 10:11watch a behind the scenes and this guy is like the goofiest of
- 10:14goofballs. Yeah, he's.
- 10:16Always beyond me. He's like the clown sometimes.
- 10:19So. So yeah, I, I really.
- 10:21Like him, you know. He really is.
- 10:23He really is. It doesn't match his face,
- 10:25doesn't it doesn't match his face at all.
- 10:29He's kind. Of like a kind of sophisticated
- 10:32aura and faze. And that's his persona, like us,
- 10:36you know, very Stony in a lot of roles, especially Love Like the
- 10:39Galaxy, which is excellent with a showcase.
- 10:42And of course, you can scroll back in your podcast feed and
- 10:44listen to our Love Like the Galaxy deep dive.
- 10:46But if you look at the behind the scenes footage of like, when
- 10:49they say cut Wool Lake is like a goofball.
- 10:55Yeah. Nothing like these characters.
- 10:58Yeah. And the fun thing is so even in
- 11:01Nirvana and fire, he plays this is very, very story like barely
- 11:07any emotion 16 year olds. And it's so funny as well.
- 11:13Basically because I reviewed Nirvana and Fire 50 and Soju and
- 11:16like one of my notes that I said was Oh my God, it's baby Woo Lai
- 11:20because he has this like very. Same face.
- 11:24But he already has like and the features that he will have like,
- 11:30you know, nowadays as a 24 year old man, 25 year old man, but he
- 11:34looks very baby. But he then has this like almost
- 11:38scowl, permanent scowl on his face.
- 11:41And it goes with this character in Nirvana and fired very much
- 11:44goes with this character. But it was like so strange and
- 11:49yet great at the same time to watch him from something from
- 11:532015 and then watch him in something like love like the
- 11:57Galaxy, because I feel like love like the Galaxy is kind of
- 12:01almost a reprise of Nirvana and fire stoic who like it on a
- 12:06man's face over like on a man's. Face what do things if that.
- 12:12Makes sense. Yeah, he is.
- 12:14He has, he has. But yeah, I think his actings
- 12:18really good and I can't wait to see where he goes next.
- 12:21Really. Yeah.
- 12:22So his Co star is Zuya Tong. She plays Lian Yuan.
- 12:27She's our female lead. She's been about 5 movies, 21 TV
- 12:30shows including Will Love in Spring with Lucian from Meet
- 12:36Yourself, which we've covered on the podcast feed as well.
- 12:39That was a drama trio episode. Remembrance of things past,
- 12:43begin again, Youngblood. I think you really enjoy Zuya
- 12:48Tong. I do.
- 12:50I always say she this actress is slept on constantly by
- 12:55international fans. And I think it's because she
- 12:59choose. First of all, she chooses
- 13:00projects that tend to be not as widely available.
- 13:04But even when they are widely available, they tend to be
- 13:08projects that people wouldn't necessarily want to gravitate
- 13:12towards. So Remembrance I've watched,
- 13:14well, I started watching Remembrance of Things Past and
- 13:17the only reason I didn't finish it is it's an MGTV drama and the
- 13:22Subs were terrible. I think it has since come to
- 13:27Vicki, but I just didn't go back to pick up.
- 13:29But I think the first thing I watched her in was begin again
- 13:32because that's a very quick, quick.
- 13:34I say quick. She plays like this CEO who has
- 13:38to have has to marry and has to have a cage to, you know, get to
- 13:44where she needs to be. And she meets this doctor and
- 13:47the doctor is kind of like the sunny personality and she's the
- 13:51cold CEO. So that's where I.
- 13:53First met fun, yeah. Yeah, yeah, it's kind of like a
- 13:57trope reversal. It's a lot of fun.
- 13:59I had a lot of fun with it. But then I have seen her in Will
- 14:03Love and Spring love it if you like, like a mature romance,
- 14:08that that's what that is. And I I think Will Love in
- 14:11Spring is only 21 episodes as well, which is even better.
- 14:15Yeah, it's like, sure, it's really good.
- 14:17I I really liked it. But yeah, I I just really like
- 14:21her as an actress. I think she tends to have really
- 14:24good chemistry, not just with her Co stars, but with like the
- 14:28rest of the cast as well. Like she plays a lot of dramas
- 14:32that are family orientated or characters that are very flawed
- 14:37in her in their essence. But yeah, I, I, I think she's a
- 14:41really, really good actress. Nice.
- 14:44So this is my first experience with Zoo You Tong.
- 14:46It's not my first experience with the Woo Lay and like I
- 14:49said, I basically came in knowing next to nothing about
- 14:53the drama except the good word of mouth from you.
- 14:56I knew Woo Lay was in it and I didn't.
- 14:59It didn't hit me that this was a sports drama until I actually
- 15:04put it on the docket for Season 6.
- 15:07And I kind of like looked it up more and I was like, oh right,
- 15:10right, badminton to tennis. That's the whole shtick.
- 15:13And then I was like, wait a minute, I freaking love sports
- 15:16dramas. So this is actually the section
- 15:20of Season 6 where I just pulled out all the stops.
- 15:24O This drama is a sorts drama and the next drama that we're
- 15:27reviewing is also a sports drama because I am nothing if not self
- 15:33indulgent and this drama is a little bit of that for me
- 15:38because I tend to really like sports dramas.
- 15:41I was looking back at the other ones that we've reviewed on the
- 15:44Tibock feed sports dramas like 2521 fencing, prison playbook,
- 15:51baseball, love all play, badminton, weightlifting, fairy
- 15:55swimming, slash weightlifting, run on track.
- 15:59So I have a great time with all of these dramas.
- 16:04I love underdog stories and I freaking love Nuna romances.
- 16:09So as soon as I realized that all of these things are at play
- 16:13and nothing but you, I was like, fuck yes, this is going to be
- 16:17great. So I I'm going to throw it over
- 16:22to you. Knowing all of this about me, I
- 16:24kind of like showed my hand a little bit.
- 16:26What do you think about nothing But you?
- 16:29I mean, I really liked it. I think, like I said, I think it
- 16:33is a little bit long for what it needs to be.
- 16:35So it does get a little bit draggy at points, but as a
- 16:41whole, I love the fact that it is an underdog story and the
- 16:45fact that they really showcase that with persistence, hard work
- 16:50and just love for what you want to do, you can get to where you
- 16:55want to be. And that's like a big message in
- 16:58this show that I I loved, I loved about it.
- 17:01Who doesn't like rooting for the underdog?
- 17:04I. Know, yeah.
- 17:05Like it's, it's great. So I love that aspect.
- 17:08I love the fact that there's really good communication in
- 17:12this show. Like there's some conversations
- 17:14that you have. Did you say are we allowed to go
- 17:17into spoilers? Or do you?
- 17:19Okay, here's the second PSA remind.
- 17:23Yeah, I have to remind people because most C drama reviews hit
- 17:28and I have to say it because K drama reviews, I always have the
- 17:32non spoiler and the spoiler section.
- 17:33But for Chinese dramas, all bets are off.
- 17:36I'm always like just if you press play on a nothing but you
- 17:39love like the Galaxy love between fairy and devil review,
- 17:42I'm assuming you've watched 38 episodes.
- 17:45You've watched 50 something episodes.
- 17:48So I mean, sorry. So spoilers are on the table.
- 17:54Be prepared to be spoiled. Go for it, Liliana.
- 17:56So I think what really shocked me was the way they set this
- 18:02drama up right, is that obviously he's playing badminton
- 18:06and he's got this whole thing that if he gets to 18 points, he
- 18:11plays really well until he gets to 18 points and then everything
- 18:14goes and he can't, yeah, he logs up.
- 18:17He can't seem to play anymore properly.
- 18:20So stuff happens and he goes, right, The female lead convinces
- 18:25him to go from badminton to tennis, which people have
- 18:29pointed out very well that that would never happen.
- 18:32But look, guys, we're throwing that out the window.
- 18:37You know, it's a drama. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 18:40It's a drama like, like I'm going to root for my underdog.
- 18:46He's like. He starts the drama and he's 22
- 18:50years old, a professional badminton player who's 22 years
- 18:56old, going from badminton and switching to tennis and becoming
- 19:02a professional tennis player. Yeah, No, that's.
- 19:06That's unheard of. Would have happened exactly.
- 19:09It wouldn't. Have say that in the drama they
- 19:11even go that like he has a conversation with his stepdad
- 19:15and he's like, you know, that doesn't happen.
- 19:17And he's like, yeah, I'm going to be the 1st and like
- 19:19everybody's like, yeah, yeah, you're going to be the like,
- 19:22like that's what you want to do. You want to cheer for the
- 19:24underdog, right, right, right. But I think what I was going to
- 19:27say was, is that so their relationship can feel very
- 19:31almost unbalanced because she's the manager of the club that
- 19:34he's going to end up playing for, right?
- 19:37But it never does. I don't think it ever came
- 19:39across as unbalanced where she had more power over him because
- 19:44she was the manager or anything like that.
- 19:46So I really enjoyed that aspect. I enjoyed the aspect that
- 19:49although she's older, he has a emotional maturity that allows
- 19:56the relationship to be believable.
- 19:58So I think because of all of that, it made me enjoy the
- 20:02drama. I mean it's the slow burn these
- 20:05two take. Their freaking time to get
- 20:09anywhere I think. I think Woo Lei has a thing for
- 20:13slow burns. He does.
- 20:15You have, you have to think that because of the projects that he
- 20:18chooses and the freedom that he has to choose these projects,
- 20:22you're like, oh, this man likes a slow fucking burn.
- 20:26Unless it's a midst a snowstorm of love.
- 20:27Because they get together fast in that drum.
- 20:31But the pacing of Amidst the Snowstorm of love is also snail
- 20:35space, so he. Likes slow stuff.
- 20:39Yeah, yeah, yeah, he does. He does.
- 20:42So I think their relationship, because they became really good
- 20:47friends 1st and then moved on into a relationship later on, it
- 20:53made it work for me so much more, so much more.
- 20:57Say say I really liked it. And like I said, I think one of
- 21:01my qualms is that it could have been shorter, but.
- 21:05Yeah, that's my biggest qualm is that it's 38 episodes.
- 21:10Could have been 30, could have been 28, could have been 20
- 21:13episodes. This story is tried and true,
- 21:18going to win me over. Every time you have an underdog,
- 21:21you have someone who's trying to persevere in a sport that
- 21:26they're not familiar with, that they have a lot of trauma
- 21:30playing sports and stuff like that.
- 21:33I am like, sign me up, sign me up.
- 21:36For some reason, I really enjoy these types of stories.
- 21:40Maybe it's because I'm American, I don't fucking know.
- 21:42But the perseverance, the grit, the mental fortitude,
- 21:46encountering problems, solving problems, all these things go
- 21:49into a sports drama. It's a formula that always is
- 21:52always going to work for me. When you talk about this Nuna
- 21:55romance, which what's the equivalent in how do you say
- 21:59older sister in Mandarin? So basically this happened so I
- 22:06asked Sarah from K Drama this and she's like this and I've now
- 22:09yeah she told me like 3 times and I always forget and I always
- 22:13just go back to referring to it as Nuna romance.
- 22:16This is so annoying. She'll start to ask again and
- 22:20like write it down or something. Every time she's like oh, it's
- 22:24this like this. There's not really a what she's
- 22:28explained to me is there's not really an equivalent thing, but
- 22:32like this is how you would translate it and kind of kind of
- 22:35say that genre. And I always forget every single
- 22:39time I'm going to have to write it down.
- 22:40You have to especially this is, this is the perfect like time to
- 22:44bring it out your back pocket. But anyway, she's 32 and he's
- 22:4822. This is right around like our
- 22:51ages, but like the female lead is right around our age.
- 22:55If you told me today that a hot badminton player was trying to
- 22:58get in my pants when he was 22, I'd be like, fuck out of here.
- 23:01Like fuck off, because that age is wild.
- 23:06Like to me that 10 year age gap is wild.
- 23:10But for some reason it it won me over in the show, totally won me
- 23:16over. He seems like an old soul.
- 23:18He seems a lot more emotionally mature, like you said, and even
- 23:22though he has a lot of lighter, bubbly moments, he's a lot
- 23:27different than the other characters that we mentioned at
- 23:30the start of this episode. And there's a lot of comedy in
- 23:35this show. There's a lot of side characters
- 23:36that we can get into, but like, for some reason those two are
- 23:42really the glue that holds this whole thing together.
- 23:44They are. They really are.
- 23:47Were there any surprises in this show that you thought were
- 23:50unique? I don't know.
- 23:53Well, like I said, for me, I really liked some of the things
- 23:57that I liked was the dialogue and the found family and a
- 24:00couple of things. So one of my biggest surprises,
- 24:04it wasn't like, I don't know, it's just something that I
- 24:07thought they were going to take in One Direction and they
- 24:10didn't. And it's specifically right at
- 24:12the end when he has to go, this is going to be like we're
- 24:16jumping right over to Kendall. Nice.
- 24:19That's fine. But it's when he has to go and
- 24:22play for a different club. Like he's at a point now that he
- 24:25has to go and play for a bigger club and I, because he's so
- 24:28good, he's surpassed when the coaches can teach him at Yeah,
- 24:32so he has to go. Top Smash, that's the name of.
- 24:35The club and usually this would be the part where like they,
- 24:40they would whack out the noble idiocy or something and they
- 24:44would break them up or not. But they didn't, they didn't,
- 24:49they were like, we can do a long distance relationship.
- 24:53And you see them texting back and forth and you see them like
- 24:56going to visit each other. You see them doing a long
- 25:00distance relationship. And it's the same thing that
- 25:04happens when he's injured and he has to go recover.
- 25:07And she pays for all of that and he finds out and his mom is
- 25:13like, yeah. And he's like, I don't want
- 25:17this, like I I want to pay it back.
- 25:19And you thought, Oh my God, this is going to blow up.
- 25:21It's going to be like a huge argument.
- 25:24It's resolved within two episodes.
- 25:27And it's like it's resolved with them sitting each other down and
- 25:31having an open dialogue, like open communication.
- 25:36And I think that's a theme throughout the whole drama is
- 25:40that every time I think this is going to go in the trope way of
- 25:44they're going to misunderstand each other, they're going to
- 25:47break up, they're going to, you know, those type of things.
- 25:51The show kind of reels it back in.
- 25:53They sit down, they have an open communication and then, you
- 25:56know, they they saw it. Things are so so, yeah.
- 26:00The best way I can describe this show is like a slice of life
- 26:04buzz sports. That's exactly what it is.
- 26:08Yeah. That's exactly what it is, Yeah.
- 26:10Yeah. Because it takes place over a
- 26:11long period of time. This is several years, right?
- 26:16Yeah. He has like 2 birthdays.
- 26:18He goes abroad for two years and we're still with these
- 26:21characters, so the 38 episodes is multiple years.
- 26:27Yeah. And I still don't think it
- 26:30should have been 38 episodes, but it's fine to do like such a
- 26:33long period of time. That's atypical, I would say of
- 26:36any drama. Usually you keep all of the the
- 26:41action or whatever within a short period of time.
- 26:43Like you just it all of this happens in like 2 weeks, several
- 26:46months or whatever. This is just taking you on this
- 26:50journey with them. All this training, all of these
- 26:53tournaments, all of these competitions and all of this,
- 26:56all these setbacks and they try and get acquired and they're
- 27:00taking investors and they get sold and all this stuff.
- 27:05She's dealing with stuff, he's dealing with stuff as an
- 27:07athlete. They're on parallel tracks
- 27:11until, you know, he kind of surpasses her.
- 27:14And I would say that the thing that kind of intrigued me the
- 27:18most was that the drama kind of fell flat when it came to the
- 27:23parent stuff. To me, I was like, this is
- 27:27confusing. And it's almost like too
- 27:31pessimistic for the drama. I, I don't know how to put it.
- 27:37What did you think of his mom drama and then her mom drama?
- 27:44So when it comes to his mom drama, I do feel like they
- 27:49resolved that fairly early on because they resolved that like
- 27:52in the 1st 20 episodes even earlier I would say because he
- 27:56has to get over his trauma because.
- 28:02What had happened was didn't his his mom forced him to go into
- 28:06badminton. First of all, he didn't.
- 28:08He didn't like badminton. He didn't like it, no.
- 28:11And then he rose through the ranks, was doing really well.
- 28:14His mom was coaching him and I would say kind of in an abusive
- 28:19manner. Like, not very she.
- 28:22Was a bully. Yeah, she was like bullying him
- 28:25anyway. She was like bullying his ass
- 28:28anyway. So then on one of his matches
- 28:32she up and like disappears, like completely ghost him.
- 28:37And come to find out, she had slinged off to die because she
- 28:41got a cancer diagnosis that was really foul and she just
- 28:45decided, oh, I'm going to disappear from my son's life
- 28:48rather than him see me die. Die.
- 28:53Yeah. Yeah, like not beat this cancer.
- 28:57And I was like, what the fuck is going on?
- 28:59Like I it was first of all told very strangely, because he she
- 29:05just like left him with the stepdad, which I don't know, I
- 29:11don't maybe it's the Hispanic in me coming out, but I'm like,
- 29:13what do you mean you just lie? You just up and abandoned your
- 29:16son with the stepdad. Like not even a blood relative
- 29:21anyway. See that part?
- 29:22That part didn't bother me too much because I have a stepdad
- 29:26and to me he's more of a dad than like.
- 29:28I totally understand. So that part doesn't bother me
- 29:32too much. I love that for everyone who has
- 29:36wonderful stepparents. But what is she doing?
- 29:40Like it was very it reminded me of that movie and I'll see if I
- 29:45can pull it up. She was out of line for just
- 29:48abandoning him though. I do agree with that.
- 29:51Like I completely agree. I don't I I don't mind her
- 29:55choice of who he was left with, but I do completely agree that
- 30:00she was completely out of line just up and leaving him after
- 30:04all of these years of making him do something that he didn't want
- 30:07to do. Yes.
- 30:08So the movie that I'm thinking of is The Farewell from 29 19
- 30:14with Aquafina. Have you heard of it?
- 30:16Right. So the the premise of that movie
- 30:19is that her Aquafina's grandmother in China has gotten
- 30:24a cancer diagnosis like that she's going to imminently die of
- 30:27cancer. It's like stage 3 or 4 and the
- 30:30families doesn't tell the grandmother that she's dying of
- 30:34cancer. Instead, they go and have a
- 30:38wedding ceremony for like another, like a cousin of hers
- 30:42as an excuse to get the family together to say their last
- 30:44goodbyes. That's the farewell.
- 30:46That's where the farewell comes from.
- 30:48Yeah, yeah, yeah. And it's very cultural, right?
- 30:52Like that's a Chinese family. And it reminded me of the
- 30:55farewell in that they just don't want to be a bother.
- 30:59They don't want to inconvenience their family member and they
- 31:03don't want to cause for the in that case the grandmother.
- 31:08They don't want to cause her unnecessary pain if she doesn't
- 31:12need to go through that mental like anguish if she's going to
- 31:16die anyway. Yeah.
- 31:18That sentiment is still there, that very odd cultural sentiment
- 31:23that is really at odds with my culture.
- 31:26And I wondered if you felt any a hint of that at all with the
- 31:30mother leaving. Like never mind that she left
- 31:33him with a stepdad, the whole thing of her leaving.
- 31:37Oh, she was way out alive. You thought it was?
- 31:40Like, yeah, yeah. Because first of all, like, so
- 31:46like we we've discussed she kind of does bully him almost into
- 31:50this sport and he becomes incredibly good because he wants
- 31:55to make his mom proud, right. That's kind of like his way of
- 32:00wanting to play. She should have just said
- 32:03because either way, he's Scrooge.
- 32:05If she had said to him, I've got and so I'm going to die, he
- 32:09might have been like, I can't play anymore, you know, I need
- 32:12to focus on my mom or whatever. But with her just up and
- 32:15leaving, yes, he does still play, but he's like stuck in
- 32:18this. But yeah, like he, he never
- 32:23grows anymore from that point onwards.
- 32:26And then he, it creates a lot of issues with him mentally, not
- 32:32just in his badminton life, but in his general life.
- 32:36He doesn't have a lot of friends.
- 32:38In fact, he's a very straightforward kind of person
- 32:41and a lot of people don't like that.
- 32:42So they they don't And he's very misunderstood, I think within
- 32:46the badminton club within like everywhere in general.
- 32:51So if you look at his life at the beginning of the show, he
- 32:53doesn't really have any friends. He's so unhappy with his job
- 32:59choice or what he has to do. He knows it's a ticking time
- 33:03bomb because he knows he's not going to be fit you.
- 33:07Know, yeah, he doesn't see a future for himself in badminton.
- 33:10So and that can all be traded back to the fact, but yet he
- 33:15still can't let go of it, like he can't make himself let go of
- 33:20it. And I think it is because it's
- 33:22almost like him letting go of his mother, almost in essence,
- 33:26like letting go of that sport. So I absolutely don't like the
- 33:31fact that I would have rather have her die in him.
- 33:35No, And that's why he was like so stunted playing if I think
- 33:41that would have been. The disappearance, the
- 33:43mysterious like it's. Just like out of nowhere.
- 33:47And then it's reveals that she. Dies by herself and then leaves
- 33:51instructions for her to have a sea burial and they kept her
- 33:55ashes for him for for some reason I I was baffled by the
- 33:59entire production of the mom's death.
- 34:04Yeah, I, I, I think it could have been better done because I
- 34:08think I think. But then she also.
- 34:12Lied to like the stepdad. She lied to everyone.
- 34:15She was like, I'm just going to saunt her off and like nobody's
- 34:18going to know and I'm just going to die by myself.
- 34:21And it's. Not like an animal in the
- 34:22fucking woods. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:25That's exactly what she did. She kind of like saunted off to
- 34:28die by yourself. And I'm like, what is even the
- 34:32point of this? Right.
- 34:33It just, I don't know, it made it left a lot of questions more
- 34:37than answers. I don't know, like his mommy
- 34:41issues were very understandable, but I just, I had a lot of
- 34:46questions and it didn't make much.
- 34:49Sense not a lot of answers. Not a lot of answers when they
- 34:52go to the seaside town because she's like, you need it because
- 34:57all of these problems come back again when he starts playing
- 35:01tennis, he comes across again with this wall of he doesn't
- 35:07want to fail. It stems from like his mommy
- 35:09issues. So she's like, why don't we get
- 35:12some closure? Why don't we find out exactly
- 35:14what happened to your mom, which to me is like, no fucking shit.
- 35:18Like why would you? Even if you had, even if you had
- 35:21no problems at all in any sport, in any profession.
- 35:26Let's find out what happened to mom.
- 35:28Let's investigate this because she went missing and is God
- 35:32knows where. You know, like what did she
- 35:36really have cancer? Was she lying to you?
- 35:39I would have a lot of trust issues after this so.
- 35:43You. Know the female lead is like
- 35:45let's find your mom. And they do, they go on this
- 35:49little, like, train ride to the seaside, and they find where
- 35:53she's buried her urn. And then the people that have
- 35:57the columbarium are like, oh, yeah, she left instructions to
- 36:01be buried at sea. And I'm like, buried at sea.
- 36:05I what connection to the sea do these people have?
- 36:08I just had, like, more questions because I'm like, why the sea?
- 36:12So I started cracking up when they open the urn and he's
- 36:18dumping the ashes into the ocean.
- 36:20And the ashes are. And the ashes are flying to,
- 36:23frankly in their faces, because they had to film this on the
- 36:29windiest day is the blustery day.
- 36:33And then the stepdad comes out of nowhere, literally runs into
- 36:38frame, and he's just there. He just made it to the seaside
- 36:41town. He has no luggage, nothing on
- 36:43him. He just runs in and starts
- 36:47grieving immediately. And I'm like, all right, I guess
- 36:50this is happening. And the two of them just dumping
- 36:54handfuls of ashes into their own faces.
- 36:56It was sending me up a wall. It was funny.
- 37:00I didn't find out they're funnier than anything else.
- 37:02I was, it was. It was just so weird and funny.
- 37:07Yeah. They're soaked with sea spray.
- 37:10Like soaked with sea spray? And ashes.
- 37:14And then ashes on top of it. I, I was like, what?
- 37:18She's not even going out to sea. No, she's coming out with them.
- 37:25So this just all of this was crazy.
- 37:30It was crazy. But her mom, I wanted to slap
- 37:36her so many times. Her mom was a piece of work.
- 37:40It was because that Lady was bitter. 1 of this.
- 37:45This is one of the most bitter characters I've seen in a drama
- 37:49period because she got this divorce from the female leads
- 37:54biological dad and has since been single and then has tried
- 37:59to instill these values of just hating on men and you're never
- 38:07going to find someone who's who's long term and say no to
- 38:12marriage and yadda yadda yadda into her daughter.
- 38:16I mean, this lady was so mad at constantly so mad, like
- 38:21constantly constantly pissed at the dad that when he finally got
- 38:27cancer at the end of the show, I was like, I was waiting for
- 38:29someone to get cancer. I was waiting for somebody else
- 38:31to get cancer because, you know, the male lead and his dad, his
- 38:36step dad have the wig shop right across the street from the
- 38:42oncology center. I was like, yeah, no, someone
- 38:44else is getting a cancer in this show.
- 38:46So her dad gets cancer. He has surgery to remove a
- 38:51kidney because I think it's on one kidney.
- 38:52It's stage 2 kidney cancer. The female lead comes to see her
- 38:57mom and when she comes through the door the mom goes is he
- 39:01dead? I know.
- 39:03And the female, he's like, no, no, he's still alive.
- 39:05He had surgery. He just has one less kidney.
- 39:08And that mom says with a straight face.
- 39:11Oh, then I can't rejoice yet. She's horrible.
- 39:14That's like I. Just I just really, really
- 39:17disliked her. Oh my.
- 39:19God. And there was not, there was not
- 39:22one redeeming quality about her, not one redeeming quality about
- 39:27her that you could pick at, to be honest.
- 39:29So I just had such an issue with that mom.
- 39:33Up to a certain point, I was like, OK, I get it.
- 39:36You're bitter. You had a horrible experience.
- 39:38You don't want your daughter to go through the same thing.
- 39:41After a certain point, I'm like, OK, you're doing irreparable
- 39:45harm. There's only so much.
- 39:47Right. You can do, yeah.
- 39:50It was foul. I just did not like that Lady
- 39:52one bit. No, because it was making the
- 39:55female lead afraid to be in a relationship.
- 39:59Yes, and it was making her refuse.
- 40:02She has this great guy ready to date her, but she's not ready
- 40:07because she's she's just like instilling everything.
- 40:11Her mom, even if she's trying not to, she's kind of just
- 40:14instilling everything that her mom's kind of spewing.
- 40:17So you're like, there's a come on, come on.
- 40:20Yeah. But then she's such a hypocrite.
- 40:23But then she's such a hypocrite because at the beginning of the
- 40:25show the female lead has that surgery to remove.
- 40:29Was it an ovary? I can't even remember what it.
- 40:31Was yes, I think it was something.
- 40:35I can't remember what it was, I think it was a cyst as an
- 40:38ovarian cyst. Yeah, it was something to do
- 40:42with her reproductive system. I remember because then it leads
- 40:44to the story much later on that she is unlikely to have kids or
- 40:49she can have a She's going to have a really hard time having
- 40:52kids. Right.
- 40:53But that when she's in the hospital, the mom is like, do
- 40:57you have to have this surgery, Don't have the surgery, yadda,
- 41:01yadda, because then you won't be able to have kids later.
- 41:03I'm like, kid, what do you think?
- 41:05Do you think kids drop out of the sky?
- 41:07Like I don't understand like. Getting someone to have a kid
- 41:10with, Yeah. I I was like floored that she
- 41:14was such a traditionalist about her having kids.
- 41:19And not her being in a relationship.
- 41:21Right. Yeah, yeah.
- 41:23No, I'm like looking around the room.
- 41:25I agree. It doesn't compute.
- 41:28I mean, you could go down the road of saying, well, she just
- 41:33wants her daughter to be like a single mom or she just wants,
- 41:36you know, there's people, there is people nowadays who prefer to
- 41:40have that arrangement where they choose to be single mums and
- 41:46they, they, they want to have kids and they're not in a
- 41:48relationship. So they choose to go down that
- 41:50road. So you could argue that's what
- 41:52the mother was hinting at, the mall specifically said.
- 41:56Who's going to want to be with you?
- 41:58Yeah, but that's that's the thing.
- 42:00Yeah, Yeah, that's the thing. And I was like, hold on, hold
- 42:03on, you can't. Have a but you said if I want
- 42:05her to be with. Anyone.
- 42:06Yeah. Yeah, exactly.
- 42:09Yeah, it makes no sense. Yeah, her mom, just as a
- 42:12character makes no sense in general.
- 42:15Right. Oh God, I'm so glad you got to
- 42:17talk about the mom. What were some of your favorite
- 42:20moments between these two, the male lead and the female lead?
- 42:25One of my favorites. I actually, these are the things
- 42:27I actually have a couple of notes on.
- 42:29So I'm going to pull up my notes for this, which are very few.
- 42:34First of all, in episode 5. Okay, back to the beginning.
- 42:39Yeah, in episode 5, she calls him out to go and have wantons,
- 42:45right? And they're having wantons.
- 42:47And they're having this conversation about how she very
- 42:51quickly tells him that his stepdad has told her about his
- 42:56mom and the whole situation with his mom.
- 42:58And I just liked that moment in general because I feel like it's
- 43:02a very open communication back and forth very quickly.
- 43:07The fact that she's like, look, I know this, this is what
- 43:09happens. And it's the fact that he
- 43:11doesn't necessarily like what she's saying, but he still kind
- 43:15of listens. And you know, there's open
- 43:19dialogue just anytime these two were talking, but this one
- 43:22specifically. And then I think later on, one
- 43:26of my all time favorite scenes in the show all together is
- 43:31much, much later on. And it's referring the thing
- 43:35they have the conversation of she's saying, how is this
- 43:38relationship going to work? I am much older than you.
- 43:41We are in different places and, you know, he says we can we can
- 43:46make it work. And she says to him, well,
- 43:50something along the lines of what about kids?
- 43:53I may not be able to have kids. And I'm at an age where.
- 43:57So it's that whole kids conversation that they have much
- 44:00later on in the drama, right? And he's like, I've never even
- 44:05thought about kids, but I do know that I love you.
- 44:09So I really like that open dialogue and that whole
- 44:12conversation because a lot of people forgo the kids
- 44:17conversation and then they kind of like get into a relationship
- 44:22and they're like, oh, you don't want kids, but I want kids,
- 44:26right? Then they're like married and
- 44:29people are like, well, crap. Because now we buy for different
- 44:32things out of life. It's so important to have these
- 44:37big conversations. Yeah, yeah, especially.
- 44:39If you're serious about somebody, and that one happens
- 44:43in episode 34 and I have the speech that he gave to her, I
- 44:49loved it, he says. Do you know what kind of people
- 44:52are the dumbest in this world? The kind that always goes after
- 44:55those small complimentary gifts? The one I like is Liangyuan, not
- 44:59the child born to Liangyuan. The only thing I can be sure of
- 45:03now is that I want to be with you every single day from now
- 45:07on. The route to everything is you.
- 45:10Only if I have you does it make sense.
- 45:12The rest are complimentary gifts.
- 45:14If I have it, I have it. If I don't, I haven't lost
- 45:17anything either. Yeah, yeah, it's, you know what
- 45:21it reminds me of? It's that whole convert.
- 45:24This is so out of left field, but it kind of reminds me of
- 45:27this. It's that whole conversation.
- 45:30There was a trend on TikTok going around of partners sitting
- 45:34down and being like, if I was pregnant and the doctor said
- 45:40you, I was unconscious, I couldn't make decisions and you
- 45:44had to pick me or the baby, who would you pick?
- 45:47And people were, like, shocked that partners were picking their
- 45:50partners over the babies, right? Yeah.
- 45:54It's like, it's that whole conversation.
- 45:57And people were like, this is that situations in a sense of of
- 46:02course he's going to pick her right now because that's what he
- 46:06wants. Like he's not thinking about
- 46:09kids. It's not crossed his mind.
- 46:11It's not something that he necessarily wants out of life
- 46:15either. At least that's what I got from
- 46:17the conversation. Like he wants to be in a
- 46:19relationship with her and then if they have kids later on, they
- 46:23have kids if they he. Said if it happens, it happens
- 46:25if not. Exactly.
- 46:27And that's, I think, the mentality that is the healthiest
- 46:32to have with such things. Also it showed how young he was.
- 46:36Yeah, he. Showed how young he was.
- 46:38She asked him did you have you ever thought about having kids?
- 46:42And he said no. It's never even crossed my mind.
- 46:44Yeah. He's 22 or 23 of.
- 46:47Course he hasn't thought about kids.
- 46:49Fucking course he's never thought about having kids.
- 46:51But she's 32 and I think this is when age gaps really, really
- 46:56show. I've always said, right, I have
- 46:59always said a 31 year old with a 42 year old, it's a really big
- 47:05age gap. It's 11 years, right?
- 47:07But at the same time it isn't because you are in similar, I
- 47:13say you've done a lot of your growing that you would have done
- 47:16in your 20s, right? And yes, in your 30s you still
- 47:20are definitely not going to have your shit together like the
- 47:23third. People say the 30s are the new
- 47:2520s and I agree. Like you have more money and you
- 47:28have technically more independence, more and a frontal
- 47:32life. Yeah, and a frontal lobe as
- 47:34well. Right?
- 47:36But what I mean is someone date someone in their 30s.
- 47:40Dating someone in their 20s is a huge age difference, not the age
- 47:46gap itself. The age gap is the same.
- 47:48It's the stage of life you're in.
- 47:51It's the amount of growing and development you've done as a
- 47:54person. So I think in that scene, he
- 47:57definitely did show his age, but also in the conversation that he
- 48:01had with her, in the words that he was saying, I think he also
- 48:05showed his maturity and he was like, I've never thought about
- 48:09it, but it's not like I necessarily want them.
- 48:12And what I do know in this instance is that I want you and
- 48:16I want to be with you. So right now I want to be in a
- 48:20relationship with you. If we do get to that bridge,
- 48:24we'll cross it when we get there.
- 48:25And I think that's like a healthy approach to to sort of
- 48:29have so that that was like one of my favorite scenes of the
- 48:32whole show because I feel like it was just very good
- 48:37communication. And it's a prime example of him
- 48:40showing his age by saying, you know, yeah, I never thought.
- 48:44About it. But him also.
- 48:46After. Ten years exactly, but him also
- 48:50showing his maturity in the way and what he replied afterwards,
- 48:55I think. I agree completely.
- 48:57Beautiful, beautiful scene. I love the way you talked about
- 49:01it and there's a lot of like little scenes that I it made me
- 49:06gasp and kick my feet and excited to see the progression
- 49:10of them and to see her also her walls just kind of breakdown as
- 49:15the show progressed. And one of those scenes was in
- 49:18episode 11 where at this point there's nothing happened.
- 49:24There's not even a whiff of, like, romance.
- 49:27I'm definitely totally in love with her, but she is.
- 49:31There's nothing like she hasn't done anything.
- 49:33He hasn't done anything. And he goes, if I can
- 49:35successfully transition from badminton to tennis and stay on
- 49:39the team, the two of us will go on a date.
- 49:43I had to pause the show the way that I gasped.
- 49:46I started choking on my own spin.
- 49:49It's that very classic Wooley rizz.
- 49:52It's very Rouley rizz. And you, this is a common theme
- 49:59with every single character this man plays is that he has this
- 50:05rizz and this charisma and this like toe the line between cocky
- 50:10and confidence. He has this confidence about him
- 50:14that makes his characters so good and so like, Oh my God,
- 50:19yes. Because that would get me
- 50:21because that would get me exactly like I understand her
- 50:26better because of the the way that it plays out in the show
- 50:29and the way that he kind of dials it up slowly right over
- 50:34the course of the show. And he springs little things on
- 50:37her like that, like, oh, we're going to go on a date if I get
- 50:42on the team and I'm like. We are little boy.
- 50:46Yeah. Yeah, it's very much a Woo Lai
- 50:50thing and I'm like, I love it. I I love it because it just
- 50:53works for him. It really does just work for him
- 50:56and his characters in general. I think there was a bus scene in
- 51:01episode 13, which I know a lot of people really like bus
- 51:04scenes. This one worked for me where
- 51:07it's a crowded bus and he's like holding back the crowd from like
- 51:12crushing her, that sort of thing.
- 51:15Every time. Every time works, every time it.
- 51:18Works every time. I'm going through like, the
- 51:21bigger like, moments. So episode 15, girl, he shuts
- 51:25the cab door because she's about to leave from like, some get
- 51:29together. Yeah, he shuts the cab door
- 51:32before she gets in and he says I'll pick you up tomorrow
- 51:35morning and reminds her about their date promise when he made
- 51:41the transition to tennis. Because now he's he broke the
- 51:45coach's serve and he's on the team, He's the captain.
- 51:48And I just haven't all caps. The rizz, It's the rizz, It's
- 51:53the rizz. And you know what?
- 51:54I know you haven't watched it, but think about this Rizz but
- 52:00times it by 10 and that's a midst a snowstorm of Oh my.
- 52:04God yeah, I've left up on episode 5 of Amidst the
- 52:09Snowstorm of Love. I don't think I've hit the peak
- 52:11RIS yet in that show. It's just constant.
- 52:15It's constant, constant and. But this episode is like such a
- 52:18big turning point in their relationship because tell me why
- 52:23I was swooning. He's so excited for their date.
- 52:27He gets up at 7:00 AM, gets ready, he's doing exercises,
- 52:33checking on his chest muscles like before he heads out.
- 52:36He's like trying to like hype himself up.
- 52:38It's adorable. Then they go on the zoo date, A
- 52:42zoo date. How adorable.
- 52:44Then the confession scene. The confession scene.
- 52:48I had this whole speech here. I don't know if I don't know if
- 52:51I want to read it all, but I it just goes to show how much she
- 52:55inspires him. He's talking about how there are
- 53:00differences between badminton and tennis and how the ball has
- 53:03to touch the ground in tennis. He says for tennis, every shot
- 53:08must touch the ground. Because of that, it took me a
- 53:10long time to get used to it. But when I thought about it
- 53:11later, it's very similar to me. Since I met you, my heart
- 53:15started touching the ground. I feel like I also need to touch
- 53:19the ground and rebound. And I'm like, stop right there.
- 53:23Just stop. Just stop.
- 53:26It's it's just yeah, yeah, he. Calls her a ray of light shining
- 53:30on me. I don't want to disappoint you.
- 53:34I want to stand upright by your side.
- 53:36That day when we talked about why we wanted to play tennis, he
- 53:39said that you wanted the championship.
- 53:41I'll win that for you. And then he says I like you.
- 53:44I seriously really like you, Liliana.
- 53:48Tell me why this bitch rejects him.
- 53:51She rejects. This man, I think at that point,
- 53:54at that point, she's just not ready.
- 53:57She's just not ready for it. Yeah, yeah.
- 54:00She flat out rejects him. She flat out, she calls it an
- 54:04improper relationship, Yeah, Says she can't handle the burden
- 54:09of his life and feelings. It's always been a manager
- 54:12athlete relationship. Gives him back the little heart
- 54:15plushie he wanted the claw machine for her.
- 54:19Like he looks crestfallen. He really does he.
- 54:23I don't know how she drove off. She left him there.
- 54:26She left his ass there in the parking garage.
- 54:29I don't know how she did that. I don't know either.
- 54:32I don't know how she left him there.
- 54:34He was devastated. The thing is right, you can see
- 54:39where she's coming from as well. 100%.
- 54:43And that's why I think this show is so good because although
- 54:47you're heartbroken for him and you're also saying how dare she,
- 54:52on the other hand, you're like, Oh my God, I understand you.
- 54:56Because first of all, she is in her 30s.
- 55:00She is very much focused on her career right now.
- 55:02And that means she does want to keep that professional
- 55:05relationship, although this hasn't been a very straight
- 55:09professional relationship for a good while, right?
- 55:14But in her head she's just trying to keep that straight
- 55:19still, right? Also, she has her mum being like
- 55:23never get in a relationship, never do that in the back of her
- 55:27mind. So we have that going and in
- 55:31general, I just don't think she is ready for that relationship
- 55:36yet, which is, and it's also showing of the age of how she in
- 55:43her 30s is way more careful. She's like, no, I need to think
- 55:46about things. I need to sit on things.
- 55:49Whereas him as like a 22 year old is very impulsive.
- 55:52And it's like, no, I know, I know I want this and I know I
- 55:55want to be in a relationship with you.
- 55:57So he's just much more assured of his feelings and what he
- 56:00wants than she is at that point. And they're just not quite on
- 56:04the same, like, on the same spot in that moment in time.
- 56:07So it's one of those scenes where, yes, you feel completely
- 56:11heartbroken for him. And you're just like, Oh my God,
- 56:14how dare she. But also you also look at her
- 56:18and it's like, I understand you so.
- 56:21So yeah. And there's one thing that the
- 56:23show does, doesn't necessarily do, but she does have a suitor
- 56:27at the beginning of the show who was sort of like a coworker who
- 56:32lives in another city, I think, like Shanghai or something like
- 56:35that. Yeah.
- 56:36He was a little bit older than her and he was very successful
- 56:41in Y Space Sports, which is the company that's kicking around
- 56:45throughout the show. And he was a Dick.
- 56:49Like he suddenly was like, why don't we get married?
- 56:53One of those that's like they don't have a relationship.
- 56:55It's like a situation ship and he's like, why don't we get
- 56:59married? We're at the proper age and she
- 57:02was having troubles at work. He was like, why don't you,
- 57:05since you're going to get fired anyway, why don't you just quit
- 57:10and be my little stay at home mother?
- 57:14And she was like, no, fuck you and fuck your mom.
- 57:16And it was like a wonderful moment.
- 57:19And then of course, Wooley's character witnesses this whole
- 57:22blowout at the company. Why space and supports her.
- 57:27But you compare that guy to Wooley's character and you can
- 57:31kind of see why she's a little hesitant.
- 57:34And the show doesn't do this explicitly.
- 57:36They don't compare these two guys overtly, but that's where
- 57:40we're. That's the starting point.
- 57:43That was her last. Relationship quote UN quote.
- 57:46Yeah, yeah. The bar is on the floor, as
- 57:49people say. Yes, someone who really wanted
- 57:51to, you know, was a sexist and wanted to clip her wings, so to
- 57:57speak, because because she was a career driven woman and didn't
- 58:02want that life for herself, right.
- 58:05Never mind that she couldn't have kids.
- 58:08They never got to that point where she told them, hey, I
- 58:10can't even have kids. So, like, I don't know what
- 58:13you're gonna do about that, but he just had all these
- 58:16expectations for her to be a homemaker.
- 58:19Yeah. And she was like, you know what?
- 58:21No, absolutely. Not.
- 58:23Yeah, and his argument was you got something better.
- 58:26You got something better to do. You got a better plan in mind.
- 58:30It was so condescending. And Oh my God, that whole
- 58:33conversation was wild in those beginning episodes.
- 58:36But. So bad.
- 58:37Yeah, yeah. But then you see her and you see
- 58:40that power imbalance between her as a manager and him as an
- 58:44athlete, and you know, she's just like, you know what?
- 58:47No. We're not going down.
- 58:50Yeah. Yeah.
- 58:51So you can understand where she's coming from, I think.
- 58:56But it's hard because Wooley, Oh my God, my heart broke.
- 58:59My heart broke his face when he says, are you rejecting me?
- 59:04Oh my God, I don't know how she handled it.
- 59:08I don't know how she drove off. I would have been like, come,
- 59:12I'll like drop you off or something because damn, that's
- 59:15cold. That's cold.
- 59:18Also in episode 21, we have to talk about this.
- 59:21They have sex. The make out scene.
- 59:24Oh. My God.
- 59:26Girl, almost one hot. Yeah, one hot make out scene.
- 59:30This was hot. I wasn't expecting it at all.
- 59:34This was her just giving in to her.
- 59:37She was like fucking this, I'm doing it.
- 59:40This was so out of left field. I mean, I wasn't out of left
- 59:43field because earlier he had come over to her house.
- 59:47He cooked her dinner because she got a migraine.
- 59:51And he was like, oh, I'll come over.
- 59:52She's trying to find investors for the club to save it.
- 59:55I think they were playing video games.
- 59:57And he takes a pic of her smiling.
- 59:59It's like a very flirty thing where she's like, delete it, I
- 1:00:02look gross. And he drops a silver necklace
- 1:00:08in front of her. Do you remember this?
- 1:00:10I haven't seen a custom necklace reveal like that since 2011.
- 1:00:16I swear to God I started screaming.
- 1:00:19Screaming because he. Wrapped the number in a midst so
- 1:00:23storm of love I'm sensing a patch.
- 1:00:27And now that I'm talking about this.
- 1:00:29Oh my God, so he's playing from the same playbook then, if he
- 1:00:36does it in a midst of snow? Summer of Love.
- 1:00:39But anyway, at the end of this episode, there's like the hazing
- 1:00:42ritual at her ex's Sports Club. He takes her lipstick and writes
- 1:00:48her name on the bulletin of outstanding graduates from her
- 1:00:51college. From her ex college because she
- 1:00:53got kicked out, expelled by her own ex.
- 1:00:57Another dirty ex. Right.
- 1:00:59Yeah, another ratty ex. She has a track with men.
- 1:01:03Yeah, she's a horrible tracker. When does she doesn't want a
- 1:01:05relationship? I know she's like 22 year old
- 1:01:08say less. No, no, no.
- 1:01:10But she's so overcome by emotion that she kisses him on the cheek
- 1:01:16and he's so surprised and hot for her that he just grabs her
- 1:01:20head and full on kisses her and then cut to they're having sex
- 1:01:24again screaming. I I was like screaming at 2:00
- 1:01:27AM Liliana. So good.
- 1:01:30Thoughts. I loved it.
- 1:01:32Like, it was like it was a proper, proper scene.
- 1:01:36There was none of this. It was hot and it was unexpected
- 1:01:40from a Chinese drama in general. And I remember clearly when I
- 1:01:43first watched this scene, I was like, Oh my God, this is really
- 1:01:46happening, like there. And it was, I don't know.
- 1:01:50I loved it. I really, really liked how it
- 1:01:52was shot. I like the fact that it felt
- 1:01:57like this damn bursting, right? This thing that had been
- 1:02:01building, this tension that had been building between them for
- 1:02:0620 odd episodes was just like boom and it burst and you get
- 1:02:11this scene and it just worked perfectly I think.
- 1:02:15I agree. I agree.
- 1:02:17So then. She rejects him again.
- 1:02:20Morning. She regrets.
- 1:02:23She rejects. Him again.
- 1:02:25The next morning she's like, we were drunk, I made a mistake,
- 1:02:29yadda yadda. She starts spewing all this
- 1:02:31nonsense and he's like. Again, are you kidding me now?
- 1:02:35Oh my God. He cuts her off, blocks her on
- 1:02:38WeChat, all the things, and she starts panicking.
- 1:02:42She does. She starts panicking.
- 1:02:43I'm like, good, good panic. You should be yeah, you should
- 1:02:47be worried. 28 though I like when he says, and I have just
- 1:02:53this paraphrase, he says, isn't the best love equal?
- 1:02:57I'm trying my hardest to level up to you.
- 1:03:01And I love that concept because they return to it later, several
- 1:03:05episodes later when he's in the hospital for his knee surgery.
- 1:03:11Yeah. Because he played through, like,
- 1:03:13a torn meniscus or something like that.
- 1:03:15Yeah. She's realized that
- 1:03:17relationships are not about each person giving 5050 and it being
- 1:03:22equal. Sometimes if the other person is
- 1:03:24at 1%, then she. She's got to give 99.
- 1:03:27It's going to give 99%. She'll show up in in the way
- 1:03:32that they need. This is one of my favorite
- 1:03:34things about this show because I think when it's a conversation
- 1:03:39that kind of gets overlooked a lot of the time is that people
- 1:03:44just think, Oh no, everything should be 5050 and whatnot. 5050
- 1:03:50looks different for different people on different days.
- 1:03:52Like sometimes I've only got 10% in me, so my partner's like
- 1:03:57today I'll give, I will put in the 90%.
- 1:04:01Other days he's going to have 5% and I'm going to step up and
- 1:04:05give him the 95%. Like that's what a relationship
- 1:04:08looks like. That's what supporting each
- 1:04:11other looks like. Every day is going to be
- 1:04:14different. And every day, you know, you're
- 1:04:16just going to have to step up to whatever each of you need on
- 1:04:20that particular day and give of each other.
- 1:04:23And I loved that concept in this drama.
- 1:04:26It's the fact that 5050 doesn't, it's not always equal either
- 1:04:32because like 5050 doesn't mean 5050.
- 1:04:35So I loved that aspect of the show and like that specific
- 1:04:41conversation that they talk about as well.
- 1:04:44I agree. It was really important and I
- 1:04:46think something that they both had to learn.
- 1:04:50And in that moment, she kind of voices it's realization for him
- 1:04:55because he was feeling really low, really down on himself,
- 1:04:58feeling sorry for himself, didn't want her around when he
- 1:05:01was at his lowest. And she was like, well, too bad,
- 1:05:06tough I'm. Going to be here.
- 1:05:07I'm going to be here. Yeah.
- 1:05:10So it was important. I love the match between him and
- 1:05:13the Japanese guy that he wins and then he, like, fucks up with
- 1:05:16his knee. It was funny though to see him
- 1:05:20acting through the knee injury because you would have thought
- 1:05:24he took a cannonball to the leg. It was.
- 1:05:27It was like, Oh my God, I've never seen such acting.
- 1:05:32Yeah, like. He was busting veins in his neck
- 1:05:35and stuff and I was like, what the?
- 1:05:38Fuck is happening? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:40I mean, I don't know. I've never had an injury like
- 1:05:42that, so I don't know what it's like, but.
- 1:05:46I was like, I think this is too much to be quite honest with
- 1:05:50you, but OK. They they end up telling you
- 1:05:54it's a medial meniscus, injury to the medial meniscus and also
- 1:05:58conjoined damage to the medial collateral ligament.
- 1:06:02Fortunately, the anterior fruciate ligament is fine.
- 1:06:05Otherwise he'd have to say goodbye to sports.
- 1:06:07I don't know what all that means, but I'll tell you this.
- 1:06:10My mom has had meniscus surgery because she had tear in her
- 1:06:14meniscus. She was not acting like all
- 1:06:18that. She also had a knee replacement
- 1:06:20surgery a few years ago. She was acting like all that a
- 1:06:24little bit because they replaced her entire knee with a bionic
- 1:06:28knee. Yeah, I was.
- 1:06:32Very confused by the reaction that he was having toward the
- 1:06:37injury and the pain level that he was at.
- 1:06:42So maybe if you're an athlete and you've had this injury or
- 1:06:45something similar, you can chime in and be like, yeah, absolutely
- 1:06:48his reaction was warranted or that acting was accurate.
- 1:06:53I personally think he was overacting in that portion of
- 1:06:57the show, especially the. Recovery.
- 1:07:01Yeah. I never even thought about it if
- 1:07:03I'm being honest. OK, maybe it's because I had a
- 1:07:06family member have such surgeries and an entire knee
- 1:07:09replacement that I'm like, all right, let's simmer down.
- 1:07:14It is painful, sure, but to that level he's turning red.
- 1:07:20Yeah, I don't know if it's because maybe because it was
- 1:07:25damaged and then he went and kept playing on it and damaged
- 1:07:29it even further. So I don't know if maybe that's
- 1:07:33why. I don't know.
- 1:07:34I don't know. I don't.
- 1:07:36Know like when it comes to that sort of stuff, I just throw it
- 1:07:39out the window like it doesn't even occur to me because they're
- 1:07:43going to over dramatize everything anyway.
- 1:07:45True. That's just how it is, because
- 1:07:47then it's comeback is so much better, isn't it so.
- 1:07:51Oh, absolutely, absolutely. Sports injuries.
- 1:07:55They're they're always going to amp it them.
- 1:07:58So the last thing that I guess I kind of want to talk about is
- 1:08:03her boss. Oh my God.
- 1:08:06I guess you don't want to talk about this guy because.
- 1:08:09No, we can. We absolutely can.
- 1:08:11He was just such. Oh my God.
- 1:08:14At the beginning he was such a piece of work.
- 1:08:18A piece of work. He was just a piece of shit.
- 1:08:21He was a horrible boss to her. He's so volatile and.
- 1:08:27Terrible parent. Terrible parent, abusive to her
- 1:08:31in the workplace, highly unprofessional, just tyrannical.
- 1:08:362 faced machismo sexist completely passing her over for
- 1:08:41promotions for upward mobility within the company because he
- 1:08:46wanted her where she was at. She was doing such a good job,
- 1:08:49she was just indispensable in her position as his assistant.
- 1:08:52And I was like, she, it seems like she's doing the work of the
- 1:08:55entire marketing department. So I don't understand why you
- 1:08:58wouldn't just move her out to that department anyway.
- 1:09:02Yeah, it's because she made him look good.
- 1:09:06She made his department look good.
- 1:09:07And that's all he it was. I mean, that's literally all it
- 1:09:12was. His terrible father, terrible
- 1:09:14husband. I.
- 1:09:15He was cheating on his wife. I wish he kind of amped that up
- 1:09:20that he was full on cheating on his wife.
- 1:09:22But I love the fact that his wife was like, I'm done with
- 1:09:25this shit and I'm I'm going to take you for everything that
- 1:09:28you're worth. I'm like, I'm here for this.
- 1:09:30Because when then bad stuff starts happening to him and
- 1:09:34everything starts going downhill for him, him, I like, pile it
- 1:09:37on, keep it piling, keep it piling, keep it going.
- 1:09:40He deserves more, Yeah. Do you think his redemption arc
- 1:09:44was done well? No, I, I guess yes, because you
- 1:09:50know, he's alone. Well, no, he's not alone because
- 1:09:53I think he had some young hot girlfriend at the end of the
- 1:09:57show that they don't they don't show her face.
- 1:10:00She has no lines, but she was there in one frame.
- 1:10:05I just think that his punishment was that he didn't have the
- 1:10:10family, He didn't have any loyalty anymore, which was so
- 1:10:14important to him. He had nothing left, did he?
- 1:10:17He. Just had the job.
- 1:10:19That was his number one priority, Yeah, when he was
- 1:10:25taking the meeting with them so that they could get the wild
- 1:10:28card from Y space, that was the biggest low because he had no
- 1:10:35control over who got the wild. Card the wild card.
- 1:10:39Yeah, yeah. At that point, he was just
- 1:10:41taking it for, like, on a power trip, just a power trip over
- 1:10:45them. And at the end of the meeting,
- 1:10:47after scolding them, he was like, and by the way, I don't
- 1:10:52even have what you want. Yeah.
- 1:10:55And that's when she loses it finally, and berates him and
- 1:11:01says, I've had enough of your hypocritical speeches.
- 1:11:03Can you stop viewing yourself with a filter?
- 1:11:05All these years? You've always been egoistic with
- 1:11:07your family and in the workplace and granted favors and kindness
- 1:11:12to your staff. Like an emperor, you only think
- 1:11:14of maintaining your personal integrity.
- 1:11:16Who gives you the right to demand infinite loyalty from us?
- 1:11:20You can trick others today, let me tell you, you'll face
- 1:11:23retribution. And then she was like, never
- 1:11:25mind. You've already faced
- 1:11:26retribution. Yeah, we're done.
- 1:11:28Tap out. We're done.
- 1:11:30Yeah, because she kept being friendly with like, cordial with
- 1:11:34him throughout the show so that she didn't burn any bridges.
- 1:11:39But up to a certain point, I'm like, girl, I'll just let that
- 1:11:42shit go because that man. Is ain't nothing worth it?
- 1:11:45Dirty, yeah. Crusty.
- 1:11:49So I didn't know if you had any any other thoughts about some
- 1:11:52side characters like the sister, the half sister?
- 1:11:56No, I don't think so. I don't think I have.
- 1:12:00Oh, I will say I did quite like the fact that we got to see
- 1:12:05various different types of relationships in the show, like
- 1:12:09romantic relationships. So we had like the nutritionist
- 1:12:13with the alcoholic, alcoholic. Yes.
- 1:12:17So that's like a whole completely different
- 1:12:20relationship right there. And I didn't think that was
- 1:12:24going to work, but it really did.
- 1:12:27It kind of really did. And I loved her friendship with
- 1:12:31our female lead. I felt like the two of them as
- 1:12:34friends just worked really well. And then we had like the puppy
- 1:12:40love that then got married so quickly.
- 1:12:43So the. After four months, After four
- 1:12:46months they were married. Oh, I would not be on their side
- 1:12:50either. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:12:52I would be like, I have shoes that have lasted longer than
- 1:12:54your relationship, so no. Yeah, so it was wild to be to
- 1:12:59see, but I liked that there was all of these different
- 1:13:02relationships that we could kind of see throughout the show.
- 1:13:06I loved the found family at the Tennis Club and how like they
- 1:13:10started off as people that really did were not going to
- 1:13:13accept each other, especially like Jiao Jiao and Sanchuan.
- 1:13:17Those two become like so close as friends, they truly become
- 1:13:23brothers to each other. But at the beginning they are
- 1:13:26just so dead set against each other because obviously like
- 1:13:30Jiao Jiao is top of the club and whatnot.
- 1:13:33And here comes this guy who is going to take over whatever it
- 1:13:36may be. So I I really liked how that
- 1:13:40found family aspect of. It was five guys.
- 1:13:44Yeah, together, as you know, I really like them.
- 1:13:47And then just a little shout out to the stepdad because I really
- 1:13:51liked him as a character. It's Noodle Dad.
- 1:13:53It is Noodle Dad. It is Noodle.
- 1:13:56He makes such like good dad character.
- 1:14:00He does he. Really does.
- 1:14:01He really does. I recently watched him in a show
- 1:14:04where he's not a good character, he's a bad character and I was
- 1:14:08like, I can't see him as a bad character.
- 1:14:13So I really liked him and how he gave really, really good advice.
- 1:14:18He gave such good advice constantly.
- 1:14:21And, you know, he really cared for Santuan, and he really
- 1:14:25brought Santuan back down to where he needed to be when, you
- 1:14:30know, he kind of went off the rails a little bit.
- 1:14:33So, yeah, yeah. Exactly.
- 1:14:36And the moment when Santuan calls him dad.
- 1:14:40Oh my God, yes, yes, I love that.
- 1:14:42Yeah, I loved it. Loved it.
- 1:14:45So emotional. I love that.
- 1:14:48I fully thought that he was going to be the Stringer for the
- 1:14:53club but then he never does. He just keeps up with the wig
- 1:14:58business. And he's quite happy with it.
- 1:15:02And he's happy with it. Yeah.
- 1:15:04Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:15:06It's good. It's all good things really.
- 1:15:08Heart warming show and some frustrating characters as you
- 1:15:13can tell, but really solid performances from the the
- 1:15:18central couple and a nice Nuna romance.
- 1:15:23It is, it is, it is a good overall Nuna romance which we
- 1:15:27don't get very often nowadays. So it is nice when they come
- 1:15:31along and they are this good and this well done in general.
- 1:15:36All right. Well, thank you Liliana for
