- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday.
- 0:14It's the 30th of September. Great to have your company as
- 0:18today we are going to wrap up the book of the Acts of the
- 0:23Apostles. And the Acts of the Apostles is
- 0:25really the Acts of Jesus building his church through the
- 0:28known world. And today, well, it doesn't feel
- 0:32like much of A climax as far as the narrative goes.
- 0:35But if we remember all the way back to the beginning, there was
- 0:38Jesus telling them that their mission, his disciples mission,
- 0:41was to take his message and share it to the ends of the
- 0:45earth. And the way that happened is
- 0:48Paul taking this message to the centre of the known world.
- 0:52And from there it could head out.
- 0:54And today they go from being shipwrecked on the island of
- 0:58Malta all the way to Rome to where Paul is able to share that
- 1:02message and the good news of Jesus is able to spread.
- 1:07So that is where the story will take us and that is where we
- 1:10will end today. So let us hear this fulfilment
- 1:14of that plan as we read together this last chapter, Acts Chapter
- 1:1928. Once we were safe on shore, we
- 1:31learned that we were on the island of Malta.
- 1:34The people of the island were very kind to us.
- 1:37It was cold and rainy, so they built a fire on the shore to
- 1:40welcome us. As Paul gathered an armful of
- 1:43sticks and was laying them on the fire, a poisonous snake,
- 1:47driven out by the heat, bit him on the hand.
- 1:50The people of the island saw it hanging from his hand and said
- 1:53to each other, A murderer, no doubt, though he escaped the
- 1:56sea, justice will not permit him to live.
- 2:00But Paul shook off the snake into the fire and was unharmed.
- 2:04The people waited for him to swell up or suddenly drop dead,
- 2:08but when they had waited a long time and saw that he wasn't
- 2:11harmed, they changed their minds and decided he was a God.
- 2:17Near the shore where we landed was an estate belonging to
- 2:19Publius, the chief officer of the island.
- 2:22He welcomed us and treated us kindly for three days.
- 2:26As it happened, Publius's father was ill with fever and
- 2:30dysentery. Paul went in and prayed for him
- 2:33and laying his hands on him, he healed him.
- 2:36Then all the other sick people on the island came and were
- 2:40healed. As a result we were showered
- 2:43with honours and when the time came to sail, people supplied us
- 2:47with everything we would need for the trip.
- 2:51It was three months after the shipwreck that we set sail on
- 2:54another ship that had wintered at the island, an Alexandrian
- 2:58ship with the twin Gods as its figurehead.
- 3:01Our first stop was Syracuse, where we stayed 3 days.
- 3:05From there we sailed to Regime a day later AS wind began blowing.
- 3:11So the following day we sailed up the coast to Putioli.
- 3:15There we found some believers who invited us to spend a week
- 3:19with them. And so we came to Rome.
- 3:23The brothers and sisters in Rome had heard we were coming and
- 3:26they came to meet us at the Forum on the Apian Way.
- 3:30Others joined us at the Three Taverns.
- 3:32When Paul saw them, he was encouraged and thanked God.
- 3:37When we arrived in Rome, Paul was permitted to have his own
- 3:40private lodging, though he was guarded by a soldier.
- 3:44Three days after Paul's arrival, he called together the local
- 3:48Jewish leaders. He said to them, Brothers, I was
- 3:51arrested in Jerusalem and handed over to the Roman government,
- 3:55even though I had done nothing against our people or the
- 3:58customs of our ancestors. The Romans tried me and wanted
- 4:02to release me because they found no cause for the death sentence.
- 4:06But when the Jewish leaders protested the decision, I felt
- 4:10it necessary to appeal to Caesar, even though I had no
- 4:13desire to press charges against my own people.
- 4:16I asked you to come here today so we could get acquainted and
- 4:20so I could explain to you that I am bound with this chain because
- 4:24I believe that the hope of Israel, the Messiah has already
- 4:29come, They replied. We have had no letters from
- 4:33Judea or reports against you from anyone who has come here,
- 4:37but we want to hear what you believe, for the only thing we
- 4:40know about this movement is that it is denounced everywhere.
- 4:45So a time was set and on that day a large number of people
- 4:49came to Paul's lodging. He explained and testified about
- 4:53the Kingdom of God and tried to persuade them about Jesus from
- 4:56the Scriptures using the Law of Moses and the books of the
- 5:00prophets. He spoke to them from morning
- 5:03until evening. Some were persuaded by the
- 5:06things he said, but others did not believe.
- 5:09And after they had argued back and forth among themselves, they
- 5:13left with this final word. For Paul, the Holy Spirit was
- 5:17right when he said to your ancestors through Isaiah the
- 5:20prophet, Go and say to this people, when you hear what I
- 5:25say, you will not understand. When you see what I do, you will
- 5:29not comprehend. For the hearts of these people
- 5:32are hardened and their ears cannot hear, and they have
- 5:36closed their eyes, so their eyes cannot see, and their ears
- 5:41cannot hear, and their hearts cannot understand, and they
- 5:44cannot turn to me and let me heal them.
- 5:49So I want you to know that this salvation from God has also been
- 5:54offered to the Gentiles, and they will accept it.
- 5:59For the next two years, Paul lived in Rome at his own
- 6:02expense. He welcomed all who visited him,
- 6:05boldly proclaiming the Kingdom of God and teaching about the
- 6:09Lord Jesus Christ, and no one tried to stop him.
- 6:14Oh Jesus, you will have your way.
- 6:28In the end, your plan will be victorious, and in fact, your
- 6:31plan is already victorious. But here we are, living in the
- 6:36time of waiting for your plan to come to fruition here on earth.
- 6:42And during this time, we have got this news to share.
- 6:45We have got this way to live which will inspire people to
- 6:49look for answers. And you, you, Jesus, are the
- 6:52answer. Give us the motivation and the
- 6:57bravery and the boldness to speak of the hope we have in
- 7:02you, and then to know that it's you that changes hearts.
- 7:06It's you that brings people to faith.
- 7:11If we are faithful to our part, you will be faithful to all that
- 7:15you have promised. So we thank you for your
- 7:19Kingdom. We thank you for the story of
- 7:21our church growing from just a group of people standing on a
- 7:25mountainside, bewildered as they saw you raised up and returned
- 7:29to the Father, and to this point where your disciples are there
- 7:34in the heart of the known world preaching your good news.
- 7:38May we, the Church of today, continue to build your Kingdom
- 7:42here on earth, indeed, as it is in heaven.
- 7:46We love you and we praise you, and we pray all of this in your
- 7:49precious name, Jesus, Amen.
