- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:13As a cherry on top to our Gentle
- 0:15Witnesses series, I wanted to share this sermon.
- 0:19I got to preach it back on Super
- 0:21Bowl Sunday, so just a few weeks ago,
- 0:23and I thought thematically it fit right in
- 0:25with our series, so I wanted to just
- 0:26include it here for you.
- 0:28It's a little bit longer, about half an
- 0:29hour, so longer than our normal episodes, but
- 0:32thought you might enjoy it.
- 0:33So, this sermon was originally preached at City
- 0:35of Light Church on February 9, 2025.
- 0:39You can find out more at cityoflightarora.org.
- 0:48So six years ago, in February of 2019,
- 0:51was also the month of my 27th birthday.
- 0:54And my 27th birthday was the worst day
- 0:57of my life.
- 0:59I had recently started a job that I
- 1:02was really excited about with a wonderful college
- 1:04ministry at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
- 1:07Still there, it's called Chicago Campus Initiative, it's
- 1:09connected with our diocese.
- 1:11And I had anticipated that the job would
- 1:13be a great next step towards pastoral ministry.
- 1:16My job was to create spaces for healthy,
- 1:18spiritual conversations with students from all different backgrounds.
- 1:22And so I was leading something called the
- 1:23Alpha Course, which is like kind of an
- 1:25introduction with room to ask questions about faith.
- 1:27I was leading Bible studies, talking with students
- 1:30one-on-one in the cafeteria and in
- 1:31other places.
- 1:33And I had gone into this job expecting
- 1:35that this job would be something I was
- 1:38good at, that I would be competent at
- 1:40it, that things would go well, and that
- 1:42it would launch me into my next season
- 1:43of ministry smoothly.
- 1:45But as I began the job, I was
- 1:49overwhelmed.
- 1:50I felt like I didn't know what I
- 1:51was doing.
- 1:53My boss, for various reasons, was not as
- 1:55available as he had planned to be to
- 1:57coach me and guide me into the job.
- 1:59So I kind of felt like I was
- 1:59suddenly in the deep end of the pool.
- 2:02I was floundering physically.
- 2:06I had a 90-minute commute each way
- 2:08because Katie and I were still in the
- 2:09suburbs, and I had not anticipated how taxing
- 2:12that would be.
- 2:13I realized that talking with college students for
- 2:16eight hours a day, five days a week
- 2:17is also emotionally taxing.
- 2:20And I also was not seeing a lot
- 2:23of fruit.
- 2:23Not very many people were coming to this
- 2:24Alpha course.
- 2:26Not very many students were coming to the
- 2:27Bible studies.
- 2:30And on my birthday, it was just all
- 2:32hitting me.
- 2:33And I just felt like, what is my
- 2:34life?
- 2:35I was trudging through the snow on a
- 2:37dark Chicago winter and just feeling like, where
- 2:40is my life going?
- 2:41I don't know.
- 2:44Katie and I were also going through a
- 2:45uniquely painful time in our personal lives, and
- 2:47I was just kind of discerning and realizing
- 2:50slowly as each day went on, like, it
- 2:52is not going to make sense for me
- 2:53to go into pastoral ministry anytime soon.
- 2:56And so I just felt like I was
- 2:57adrift.
- 2:58I was overwhelmed by the challenges of life
- 3:00and didn't know where I was going.
- 3:03And I don't know if you've ever felt
- 3:05that way about a challenge in your life.
- 3:09Maybe at work, you feel like if you
- 3:11could just crack the code on this one
- 3:13problem, then you'd be all right.
- 3:14But you can't crack the code.
- 3:17Or maybe at home, you love your roommate,
- 3:20you love your spouse or your kids.
- 3:21But then you find yourself somehow saying something
- 3:24untrue or unkind.
- 3:26And then it's just beyond you to repair
- 3:28the damage.
- 3:30Maybe it's with your mental health.
- 3:32I suffer from seasonal depression.
- 3:35So often this time of year, I feel
- 3:36like I have to shove like a pile
- 3:37of bricks off my chest just to get
- 3:38out of bed in the morning.
- 3:42Or maybe it's in your spiritual life.
- 3:44You want to love others the way that
- 3:47God has loved you.
- 3:49You're deeply committed to the way of Jesus.
- 3:52But you find yourself stumbling into the same
- 3:54distractions and patterns of sin again and again.
- 4:00Well, if you can't connect with any of
- 4:02that, if you've never experienced a sense of
- 4:03personal inadequacy, if you've felt competent as you've
- 4:07met every life challenge again and again and
- 4:09again throughout your life, that's awesome.
- 4:12But I really worked hard looking at this
- 4:15text in Luke chapter 5 for today.
- 4:17I just couldn't find any good news for
- 4:19you.
- 4:20It's just not there.
- 4:23And so I'm sorry.
- 4:25I'm fresh out of good news if that's
- 4:26your situation today.
- 4:27But have a hashtag blessed life.
- 4:32But for the rest of us, for those
- 4:34of us who at least every once in
- 4:35a while feel overwhelmed by life's challenges, feel
- 4:38inadequate to do what it takes, whatever it
- 4:41is.
- 4:43There's some really good news in today's passage.
- 4:46So let's dig into that.
- 4:48So this is Luke chapter 5.
- 4:49It's there in your bulletin if you want
- 4:50to look at it.
- 4:51Just the first 11 verses may be a
- 4:54familiar story.
- 4:55And if you've been here the past couple
- 4:56of weeks in our sermon series, tell me
- 4:58something good.
- 4:59You may know some of the moments leading
- 5:01up to this moment.
- 5:02So this is still fairly early in Jesus's
- 5:04ministry.
- 5:05He's in his home region of Galilee.
- 5:08He had recently been baptized in the Jordan
- 5:10River by his cousin, John the Baptist, as
- 5:13kind of this beautiful launch to his ministry
- 5:14with the voice of his father affirming him.
- 5:17He had gone into the desert and faced
- 5:19off with the devil and overcome that challenge,
- 5:21ready spiritually in his soul to now minister
- 5:24in a public way.
- 5:25He had launched his public ministry in his
- 5:27hometown of Nazareth.
- 5:29And word was getting out.
- 5:30Luke tells us that the news about Jesus
- 5:31was spreading throughout the region.
- 5:33So as he's going from town to town,
- 5:34not just Nazareth, but other places in this
- 5:37region of Galilee, he's doing mainly two things.
- 5:39He's healing people and he's teaching people.
- 5:42So verse 443, right before this passage starts,
- 5:45tells us that he's proclaiming the good news
- 5:47of the kingdom of God.
- 5:51And people are experiencing the good news of
- 5:52the kingdom of God as they come to
- 5:53him for healing.
- 5:56So that brings us up to the beginning
- 5:57of today's passage.
- 5:59One day, as Jesus was standing by the
- 6:01Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around
- 6:04him and listening to the word of God.
- 6:07So these are some of those crowds.
- 6:08They've come to Jesus.
- 6:10They're eager to hear this message about the
- 6:11kingdom of God, or maybe they're eager to
- 6:13receive a healing for themselves or for a
- 6:15loved one or for a friend.
- 6:17So they're seeking Jesus out.
- 6:18They're crowding around him as he's standing by
- 6:20this lake called Lake Gennesaret, also known as
- 6:22the Sea of Galilee.
- 6:24Now, I don't know if you've ever tried
- 6:26to manage a crowd in a relatively uncontrolled
- 6:28environment, but it can get kind of dicey.
- 6:31I've done a lot of student ministry and
- 6:32it's just like, oh, what's going on?
- 6:34Crowds have this energy.
- 6:35They're always kind of moving forward unless there's
- 6:37something to stop them.
- 6:39So I know if I had been standing
- 6:40by a body of water with this crowd
- 6:42of people who are very excited, you know,
- 6:44with great anticipation, I would have ended up
- 6:45having to take a step back and I
- 6:47would be ankle deep and then I'd be
- 6:48knee deep and then there'd be problems.
- 6:51I don't know if that's what happened with
- 6:52Jesus.
- 6:53All of the gospel witnesses indicate that Jesus
- 6:55had no problem handling crowds.
- 6:57But for whatever reason, Jesus decides, you know,
- 6:59it's going to be good to maybe get
- 7:00some distance, get some elevation.
- 7:02So he asks Simon, a fisherman, if he
- 7:04can get into his boat and then sit
- 7:06down and do his teaching there.
- 7:08Now, Simon and Jesus had already met.
- 7:11One of the healings that Jesus had done
- 7:13was of Simon's mother-in-law.
- 7:15And so it could be that Simon is
- 7:17very grateful to Jesus for that.
- 7:19And so he's more than willing for Jesus
- 7:20to use his boat.
- 7:21It could be that Simon, like the others,
- 7:23is captivated by Jesus' teaching, eager to hear
- 7:25more about the kingdom of God.
- 7:27So he welcomes Jesus to sit down in
- 7:29his boat.
- 7:31But then what happens next in this story
- 7:32is really unusual and really unexpected.
- 7:38And it's hard because we're familiar with this
- 7:40story, right?
- 7:40We just heard it read.
- 7:42You might have heard it many times before
- 7:43if you've been around church circles for a
- 7:45while.
- 7:46But if you can, just imagine with me
- 7:48that you've never heard this story before.
- 7:50What would you expect to happen based on
- 7:52what we've seen so far in this story?
- 7:55Jesus has been going around from village to
- 7:56village teaching and healing, proclaiming the good news
- 7:59of the kingdom of God, laying hands on
- 8:01people, delivering them from demonic oppression.
- 8:03So now he's in this moment where he's
- 8:05doing some teaching.
- 8:06He sits down in the boat, he does
- 8:06his teaching.
- 8:07He wraps up his teaching, he's done.
- 8:09What would we expect to happen next?
- 8:11He would get off of the boat, go
- 8:13on shore and do some healing, right?
- 8:14That's the expected thing.
- 8:16But that's not what happens.
- 8:18There's this very unusual request that Jesus makes.
- 8:23Now, before we get to the request, I
- 8:25think it's important to note that Jesus was
- 8:26sitting down in the boat.
- 8:28You notice how Luke mentioned that?
- 8:30And that's not just like a random detail.
- 8:32Luke is giving us a clue about something,
- 8:34because in that time, when rabbis did their
- 8:37synagogue teaching, they would do it sitting down.
- 8:39That was the tradition.
- 8:39It was like the seat of teaching was
- 8:41a seat of authority speaking from the word
- 8:43of God.
- 8:45And so when it says that the people
- 8:46are crowding around and listening to the word
- 8:47of God, and then Luke says Jesus sat
- 8:50down in the boat, he's saying, this is
- 8:51a rabbi moment.
- 8:53Jesus is teaching something really significant here.
- 8:55It's almost like Luke is saying, pay attention
- 8:57to what happens next.
- 8:58The lesson is about to begin.
- 9:01But it's really interesting.
- 9:02Luke doesn't give us any details about what
- 9:03Jesus actually said, which means that the lesson
- 9:07is what Jesus does.
- 9:09The lesson is this unexpected thing that Jesus
- 9:11is about to do.
- 9:12So we're supposed to pay attention.
- 9:13We're supposed to see rabbi Jesus teaching through
- 9:16action in the next few moments.
- 9:18So what is this unusual request?
- 9:20He says to Simon, put out into deep
- 9:22water and let down the nets for a
- 9:25catch.
- 9:27Now, this is unusual and unexpected for a
- 9:29couple of reasons.
- 9:30One is that Jesus is a rabbi, not
- 9:33a fisherman.
- 9:34So this is almost like if John Wiest,
- 9:37who's a home renovator, if he was like
- 9:39redoing the tile in a bathroom somewhere and
- 9:41Father Trevor showed up on the work site
- 9:43and was like, hey, I see what you're
- 9:44doing with the grout there, but could you
- 9:45consider doing it like this instead?
- 9:48Or like if Deacon Casey visited the Cancer
- 9:50Infusions Center where Grace Wahlbaum works as a
- 9:52nurse.
- 9:52And he was like, Grace, I know you
- 9:53already assessed the patient in room number four,
- 9:55but I feel like you missed something.
- 9:56Could you go assess them again?
- 9:57He's like, seriously?
- 9:59Like, you know, what does Jesus know about
- 10:01fishing?
- 10:03The second reason that it's unexpected and unanticipated
- 10:08is that Simon knows it's not going to
- 10:11work.
- 10:12Simon is a fisherman.
- 10:13Simon knows how fishing works.
- 10:15He's been working all night.
- 10:16He has nothing to show for his efforts.
- 10:18The fish are just not coming in today,
- 10:19right?
- 10:20It's over, it's done.
- 10:21Nothing is going to happen.
- 10:23And so what's intriguing to me is that
- 10:25despite it being so unusual and unexpected, Simon
- 10:30still does what Jesus says.
- 10:32And at cost to himself and his companions,
- 10:35right?
- 10:35Like they've already been cleaning the nets we
- 10:36see in verse two.
- 10:37They were ready to go home.
- 10:38They were no doubt exhausted.
- 10:40You know, this is like their version of
- 10:41the 90 minute commute to downtown Chicago, right?
- 10:43They're ready to be done for the day
- 10:45or for the night.
- 10:47But Jesus makes this request.
- 10:49This is almost like that moment when a
- 10:51restaurant is open till 9 p.m. and
- 10:53the line cook has already cleaned up the
- 10:54kitchen and is about to hang up their
- 10:55apron.
- 10:56And then a customer comes in and orders
- 10:57a cheeseburger at 8.59. It's like, okay,
- 11:02sure.
- 11:05But Simon clearly, he has this honor for
- 11:07Jesus, right?
- 11:08Maybe he's grateful again for the healing of
- 11:10his mother-in-law.
- 11:12Maybe he's been captivated by the teaching.
- 11:13He clearly respects Jesus.
- 11:15And so we seem to see that he
- 11:17decides to respectfully humor Jesus and honor his
- 11:21request, even though he knows it's not going
- 11:23to work.
- 11:26So he does what Jesus says.
- 11:28He says, because you say so, I will
- 11:31let down the nets.
- 11:33Because you say so, I will let down
- 11:36the nets.
- 11:38He and his companions go out into the
- 11:40deep water.
- 11:41They put down the nets.
- 11:44And then the miracle happens.
- 11:46It's not just one or two fish, like
- 11:49a compensation prize for a wasted night's effort.
- 11:52It's not just like a really good haul.
- 11:56It's a record catch.
- 11:58There's so many fish that the nets start
- 12:00to break.
- 12:00The fish are piling in.
- 12:01They have to signal they're partners in the
- 12:03other boats, James and John.
- 12:04So they come and they've got two boats
- 12:05together.
- 12:05And then they're somehow hauling the fish into
- 12:07the boats.
- 12:08And then the boats start to sink.
- 12:10Like, can you imagine how many fish we
- 12:11were talking about?
- 12:12To make boats sink, boats that are designed
- 12:14to float.
- 12:14So then they're trying to get the boats
- 12:15back to shore before they sink.
- 12:16And it's one for the record books.
- 12:18It's more fish than they've ever caught in
- 12:19their entire lives.
- 12:20It's amazing.
- 12:21It's a miracle.
- 12:22And how does Simon respond?
- 12:27He responds to Jesus, go away from me,
- 12:30Lord.
- 12:31I am a sinful man.
- 12:35Simon's response to this miracle is to be
- 12:38completely overwhelmed by a sense of his own
- 12:40personal inadequacy.
- 12:43He says, I am not smart enough.
- 12:45I am not strong enough.
- 12:47I am not good enough for this.
- 12:50Whatever this is, I can't hack it.
- 12:54Go away from me.
- 12:58Now, in our kind of cultural setting, this
- 13:01can strike us as kind of strange religious
- 13:03language, right?
- 13:04It's hard to imagine like, let's say you
- 13:06have your best day at work ever, and
- 13:08then your response to your boss or to
- 13:09whoever helped you with it is, go away
- 13:11from me, I'm a sinner.
- 13:13It's just like, well, that's not the language
- 13:14we use.
- 13:14That's kind of weird language.
- 13:16And I think some of that is that
- 13:18in our increasingly post-Christian cultural moment in
- 13:21the West, including in the United States, sometimes
- 13:24we're uncomfortable with the language of holiness and
- 13:28unholyness, the language of righteousness and sin.
- 13:32Some of that discomfort is really understandable because
- 13:35we may know historically or in our own
- 13:37experience even, sometimes that language is used abusively.
- 13:41Sometimes it's used to manipulate or to control.
- 13:43Sometimes people are taught to hate themselves with
- 13:46that language.
- 13:47And that does incredible damage to the human
- 13:50soul.
- 13:52But the other extreme where we more often
- 13:54find ourselves is we just don't have the
- 13:55language.
- 13:56We don't have words to name ideas like
- 13:58holiness and unholyness, like righteousness and sin.
- 14:02And so we're adrift in these experiences of
- 14:04personal inadequacy and we don't know how to
- 14:07name it.
- 14:08We don't know how to give voice to
- 14:09this idea that some of the stuff in
- 14:11our life that's deeply problematic is in fact
- 14:14our responsibility.
- 14:17We don't know how to give voice to
- 14:18the idea that we really do need some
- 14:19outside help because we can't hack it.
- 14:24And we have this culture where we're trying
- 14:25to always positively reinforce each other saying like,
- 14:28you are strong, you are good, you are
- 14:30smart.
- 14:30And of course that desire to encourage is
- 14:32beautiful.
- 14:33And yet it often leaves us empty when
- 14:37we know deep down that we're not smart
- 14:40enough, we're strong enough, we're good enough for
- 14:42the challenges that we're facing.
- 14:45Simon has an advantage over us in this
- 14:47regard that in his cultural and religious context,
- 14:51as problematic and flawed as that was, his
- 14:52culture was problematic, our culture is problematic, but
- 14:55in that culture he was given language to
- 14:58name what he was experiencing.
- 15:00He was given words to say, I am
- 15:03a sinful man.
- 15:04I know that I don't have what it
- 15:06takes.
- 15:06I know that something's happening here that I
- 15:08am inadequate for.
- 15:11As a devout Jew, he would have understood
- 15:13the idea that holiness is the presence of
- 15:16God and that it's dramatically different from what
- 15:21human beings often bring to the table.
- 15:24That holiness cannot be in communion with sin
- 15:28or with unholyness because it's so good.
- 15:33And Simon's also realizing something about Jesus in
- 15:36this moment.
- 15:38Because Simon already knew that Jesus was a
- 15:39healer, Simon already knew that Jesus was a
- 15:42teacher, he's already grateful to Jesus, he already
- 15:45wanted to honor Jesus, he already was obeying
- 15:47Jesus.
- 15:50But in this moment, Simon recognizes that Jesus
- 15:53is holy.
- 15:56That whatever's happening here, this is the presence
- 15:58of God.
- 16:00And that just reinforces his sense that this
- 16:02is not for me.
- 16:04I can't be here, go away.
- 16:09And then what I think we could call
- 16:11the second miracle in this story happens.
- 16:14We've already had a literal miracle, right?
- 16:15A miraculous swamping of boat sinking fish.
- 16:19But now we have the real heart of
- 16:22the passage.
- 16:24This is a quieter moment.
- 16:26It's a more intimate moment.
- 16:28It's not as visually dramatic.
- 16:30Some of the crowds were probably still there
- 16:31to see the thing that happened with the
- 16:32fish and they would have gone home and
- 16:34told that story.
- 16:34They probably missed this moment.
- 16:36Because it's just between Jesus and Simon.
- 16:40This is the real miracle.
- 16:42This is the real presence of God breaking
- 16:45in in the story is how Jesus responds
- 16:47to Simon in his moment of deep personal
- 16:51inadequacy.
- 16:54He says, don't be afraid.
- 16:56From now on, you will fish for people.
- 17:02Jesus is tenderly catching Simon right where he
- 17:06is.
- 17:08Turns out Jesus does know a thing or
- 17:10two about fishing.
- 17:12He's meeting Simon right where he's at.
- 17:15He's intuiting that Simon is afraid, that Simon
- 17:18is overwhelmed, that Simon feels inadequate.
- 17:20And so he's telling him, don't be afraid.
- 17:24Now that phrase, don't be afraid, as you
- 17:26know, it pops up all throughout the Bible.
- 17:28It was in our Gideon reading today, right?
- 17:30Gideon similarly has a realization that holiness just
- 17:32showed up and he's like, ah!
- 17:34What do I do?
- 17:35I just saw the angel of the Lord
- 17:36of hosts.
- 17:37And again, God does them, don't be afraid.
- 17:40This is a constant theme of the Bible,
- 17:43don't be afraid, don't be afraid.
- 17:44And it can be hard to hear that
- 17:46message because like, well, is it a literal
- 17:48command to not experience the emotion of fear?
- 17:51Because that would be hard to obey, right?
- 17:53Like, fear is a physiological response to scary
- 17:57situations that just happens for us as human
- 17:59beings.
- 17:59It's not like something we're choosing to do.
- 18:01So that can't be what Jesus means.
- 18:02That would be impossible to obey.
- 18:04We even know later, Jesus himself was sometimes
- 18:06overwhelmed with anxiety to the point of death
- 18:08right before his crucifixion.
- 18:09So he experienced those physiological things.
- 18:12I think what Jesus is saying is, you
- 18:15don't need to be afraid.
- 18:18This situation is scary, that's true.
- 18:21You're feeling inadequate, that's true too.
- 18:24But you don't need to be afraid because
- 18:27I'm here.
- 18:29I'm with you, I'm for you, I've got
- 18:32you, I've caught you.
- 18:35That's what Jesus is saying to Simon.
- 18:39And you notice in this verse, it keeps
- 18:41referring to him as Simon, but it's actually
- 18:43at this moment when he says, go away
- 18:45from me, I'm a sinful man, that it
- 18:47first calls him Peter, calls him Simon Peter.
- 18:50First time in the Gospel of Luke, this
- 18:52exact moment.
- 18:53We later learn that that's actually the name
- 18:55that Jesus gives to Simon.
- 18:58Jesus is catching Simon, and he's saying there's
- 19:01a new reality coming for you.
- 19:05But I've got you right where you are.
- 19:07You don't need to be afraid.
- 19:11And this is different than how we often
- 19:13reassure each other, right?
- 19:15Again, in our culture, we're so positive that
- 19:18we often, we wanna say to each other
- 19:20like, oh, no, no, no, you're not a
- 19:22sinful man.
- 19:23You are so smart enough, you are strong
- 19:25enough, you are good enough.
- 19:26That's how we tend to reassure each other.
- 19:28And there are moments where that may be
- 19:29appropriate, but that tends to minimize or to
- 19:34discount the inadequacy that we can deeply feel
- 19:36sometimes.
- 19:38And Jesus doesn't do that.
- 19:40Jesus doesn't minimize Simon's sense of inadequacy.
- 19:44He doesn't discount it.
- 19:46He doesn't contradict it.
- 19:48But he tenderly catches Simon in it.
- 19:53That's what Jesus does for us.
- 19:56Jesus tenderly catches us in all of our
- 20:00inadequacy and says, you don't need to be
- 20:03afraid.
- 20:05I'm with you, I'm for you.
- 20:08I've got you, I've caught you.
- 20:14And for some of you today, that's where
- 20:16you need to rest.
- 20:17That's the whole sermon, right?
- 20:19Ignore the rest of everything I say, right?
- 20:20You just need to pause there.
- 20:23Some of you are feeling overwhelmed.
- 20:26Has anybody felt overwhelmed in the past few
- 20:28weeks by one thing or another?
- 20:30Maybe in our national life, maybe in your
- 20:32personal life.
- 20:35And you just need to hear Jesus say
- 20:37to you, you don't need to be afraid.
- 20:38I am right here with you.
- 20:43But some of us might be in a
- 20:44different place.
- 20:45And there is that second half of what
- 20:47Jesus says, right?
- 20:50Jesus says, don't be afraid.
- 20:52From now on, you will fish for people.
- 20:56So what does it mean to fish for
- 20:57people?
- 20:58And if you've spent some time in certain
- 21:00Christian subcultures, you might be having a little
- 21:02moment of anxiety right now, right?
- 21:04You're like, oh, we're gonna talk about fishing
- 21:05for people now.
- 21:06Or somehow about like talking to people or
- 21:08like gathering people in and it's like, oh
- 21:10man, there are some ways where that's practiced
- 21:13where it can feel like salesy or pushy
- 21:15or even manipulative or like we're somehow not
- 21:17honoring other people's sense of agency or their
- 21:19convictions.
- 21:20And it can just feel fishy.
- 21:27Okay, now granted, sometimes it is fishy, right?
- 21:30Sometimes there are ways of trying to fulfill
- 21:32this maybe with good intentions that are just
- 21:34bad.
- 21:35They don't make social sense.
- 21:36They're not honoring to other people.
- 21:39Sometimes they're ham-fisted intellectually.
- 21:43That's all true.
- 21:46But let's not let whatever baggage we might
- 21:50carry from our particular Christian subculture keep us
- 21:53from hearing what Jesus is saying in this
- 21:55passage, right?
- 21:57We don't wanna put our particular assumptions on
- 22:01this passage.
- 22:02We wanna meet Jesus where he's at and
- 22:05hear what he's saying when he says, from
- 22:06now on, you will fish for people.
- 22:12Because what Jesus is inviting us into must
- 22:14be beautiful like he is beautiful.
- 22:17It must be good like he is good.
- 22:20It must be true like he is true.
- 22:23It's not something that's gonna manipulate people or
- 22:25hurt people if we do it in his
- 22:27spirit and his way.
- 22:30And it's actually really funny.
- 22:32So this is a New Testament Greek nerd
- 22:33moment.
- 22:35And the gospel of Mark is the first
- 22:37time that this is written down.
- 22:37Mark beat out the other gospel writers.
- 22:39He wanted to get it done.
- 22:40He wrote it fast, first on the record.
- 22:44And in his passage, when Jesus says this
- 22:47phrase, it literally translates as fish for people.
- 22:50Like it's clearly like the fishing metaphor is
- 22:52what's on the table.
- 22:53But then when Luke writes this down, Luke
- 22:55is like a little bit more like literary
- 22:56than Mark is.
- 22:57He's more of a craftsman with his words.
- 22:59And this phrase when Jesus says, don't be
- 23:03afraid, from now on you will fish for
- 23:05people.
- 23:06Apparently, my Greek isn't excellent, but from the
- 23:09commentaries I read, it would be more literally
- 23:12or accurately translated, from now on you will
- 23:15catch people alive.
- 23:17From now on you will catch people alive.
- 23:20It's almost like Luke is like imagining the
- 23:23ways that this metaphor could go bad.
- 23:25He's like, with fish, you take them out
- 23:27of a great environment where they're breathing and
- 23:29they're doing fine.
- 23:30And then you put them on a boat
- 23:31and they're like gasping for air and blah,
- 23:33blah, blah.
- 23:33He's like, that's not, no, that's not what
- 23:35we're doing.
- 23:36We're catching people alive.
- 23:39And I think that's really reassuring, right?
- 23:42That we're catching people alive.
- 23:43Take a look if you can at your
- 23:44bulletin.
- 23:45This beautiful work, The Great Catch by John
- 23:48August Swanson.
- 23:49Trevor's in Minneapolis right now.
- 23:50He said he walked into the retreat center
- 23:52and this exact icon is in that retreat
- 23:55center, a huge version of it, yeah.
- 23:57So I just feel like the Lord's like
- 23:57affirming that this is for us to pay
- 23:59attention to.
- 23:59And you can see a kind of a
- 24:02fuller picture on the back of the bulletin
- 24:04if you need to zoom out a little
- 24:05bit.
- 24:07Those fish are doing great, right?
- 24:11Those fish are colorful.
- 24:13Those fish are alive.
- 24:14Those fish are not gasping for breath.
- 24:17John August Swanson knows what he's doing, right?
- 24:19These fish are being caught alive and experiencing
- 24:21something beautiful right here.
- 24:25That's what it means to catch people alive.
- 24:27It's to gather them in to this way
- 24:30of life and this community where they can
- 24:32experience life with Jesus.
- 24:35Almost every ancient commentator on this passage says
- 24:38in as many words, the boat is the
- 24:41church.
- 24:43The boat is the church.
- 24:46Because Simon couldn't do it by himself.
- 24:47He needed his companions.
- 24:48And then he and his companions couldn't do
- 24:49it by themselves.
- 24:50They needed to call their other companions.
- 24:52They needed two boats.
- 24:52They needed a community to come together and
- 24:56bring all those fish in.
- 24:58And so if you have that sense of
- 25:01baggage of like, ah, I feel like I
- 25:02can't do this.
- 25:03I feel like I can't fish for people,
- 25:06whatever that means, you don't have to do
- 25:08it by yourself.
- 25:10That's not what it's about.
- 25:11It's not about you being amazing, masterful, skillful,
- 25:14fisher, right?
- 25:16Simon was not an amazing, masterful, skillful fisher.
- 25:19But he was able to say to Jesus,
- 25:21but because you say so, I will let
- 25:24down the net.
- 25:26So what would that look like for us
- 25:27as a community and each of us individually
- 25:30and in our families as we have opportunity
- 25:31with our friends, with our coworkers, with our
- 25:33neighbors, with other family members?
- 25:35What would it look like for us to
- 25:36say to Jesus, but because you say so,
- 25:38I will let down the net?
- 25:41Well, remember how Luke queued us in that
- 25:43this was like a rabbi moment, right?
- 25:45That Jesus was gonna teach by doing in
- 25:47this passage.
- 25:48So I think we can actually look at
- 25:49what Jesus does.
- 25:50Three ways that Jesus fishes in this passage
- 25:55that we can learn from, that we can
- 25:56put into practice ourselves.
- 25:58So the first was Jesus started by teaching.
- 26:00And we know again from verse 443 that
- 26:02he was proclaiming the good news of the
- 26:04kingdom of God.
- 26:06So whatever fishing for people means, at some
- 26:09point it probably includes telling people the good
- 26:12news of the kingdom of God.
- 26:15Okay, and if you're getting anxious, stay with
- 26:17me, okay?
- 26:18But it's good to tell people the good
- 26:21news.
- 26:22It's good to tell people the good news.
- 26:24A lot of people have never heard it.
- 26:27It is news to a lot of people.
- 26:29You would be surprised.
- 26:31And what is that news?
- 26:32Well, we know from 1 Corinthians 15 when
- 26:34the apostle Paul kind of summarizes it for
- 26:35us that it's Christ died for our sins
- 26:37according to the scripture.
- 26:39That he was raised on the third day
- 26:40according to the scripture.
- 26:41And that he appeared to Simon and then
- 26:43to others that these things really happened.
- 26:45And then now that everybody who turns to
- 26:46him in faith can enter into the kingdom
- 26:49of God.
- 26:50That's really good news.
- 26:52And that's good news to share with other
- 26:54people who haven't heard it.
- 26:56Okay, so now you might be thinking like,
- 26:57okay, but how does that work, right?
- 26:59I have all these images of how I
- 27:00don't wanna do that, but how do I
- 27:02do that?
- 27:02How do I actually in a relationally intelligent,
- 27:06emotionally intelligent, socially sensible way do this?
- 27:08Well, I think Jesus helps us with this
- 27:10too actually.
- 27:11The second way that Jesus fishes in this
- 27:13passage is he unexpectedly invites Simon to go
- 27:17into the deep water.
- 27:19That was unexpected.
- 27:20The expected thing would have been to go
- 27:21back to shore, but Jesus has this unexpected
- 27:24invitation.
- 27:25I think there's lots of moments in our
- 27:27lives and conversations with friends, neighbors, coworkers, family
- 27:30members where the expected thing might be to
- 27:33stay in the shallows.
- 27:35But we have the honor as disciples of
- 27:39Jesus to invite people to go into the
- 27:41deep water.
- 27:42If they want to, if they're willing.
- 27:47Just a quick example.
- 27:48Let's say you're showing up at work on
- 27:50Monday morning, catching up with the co-worker,
- 27:51ask them how the weekend was and they
- 27:53say, oh, I was at a family wedding,
- 27:55really happy for my cousin, but it's like
- 27:57all I could do to put up with
- 27:58my fundamentalist great aunt.
- 28:00What's the expected response?
- 28:03Laugh, move on to the next topic of
- 28:05conversation.
- 28:07What would be an unexpected response maybe?
- 28:11Wow, that sounds like a really fraught family
- 28:12relationship for you.
- 28:15Just show that you're willing to listen.
- 28:18You're inviting them into the deep water if
- 28:20they want to go there.
- 28:21And if they don't, that's okay.
- 28:23You're not forcing anything.
- 28:26But who knows what might happen out there
- 28:27in the deep water for them.
- 28:31And the third way that Jesus fishes in
- 28:35this passage.
- 28:37So once he's out there in the deep
- 28:38water with Simon and Simon's having this moment
- 28:41of being personally overwhelmed with his inadequacy, Jesus
- 28:45catches him tenderly.
- 28:47He reassures him.
- 28:49He says, you don't need to be afraid.
- 28:52And so when you're in conversations with people,
- 28:54as you're privileged to hear their story about
- 28:57what's happening in their life, occasionally somebody might
- 28:59begin to articulate a sense of personal inadequacy.
- 29:02They might begin to share how they feel
- 29:04like they don't have what it takes for
- 29:05the challenges in their life.
- 29:07How they feel like they're not strong enough
- 29:08or smart enough or good enough.
- 29:11And in that moment, we have the honor
- 29:13of saying to them in the name of
- 29:15Jesus, you don't need to be afraid.
- 29:19Jesus is right here.
- 29:21He's with you.
- 29:22He's for you.
- 29:24He's got you.
- 29:25He's caught you.
- 29:27That's what it means to catch other people
- 29:29alive.
- 29:31It's not to somehow determine something for them
- 29:33or control something or force something.
- 29:35It's about meeting people where they're at in
- 29:38their inadequacy and saying, Jesus is here for
- 29:40you if you're willing to receive him.
- 29:46So if you're in a place today where
- 29:50you just feel that sense of inadequacy about
- 29:53anything in your life, where you feel like
- 29:57things aren't working the way it is,
