- 0:00Speaker 1: It's time for the Yukon football coaches show on the radio.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Mike Crispino, along with Jason candle a little bit later on,
- 0:07Speaker 1: we'll talk to Shamar Porter. We'll talk to Tajay Mullix,
- 0:10Speaker 1: the defensive lineman, uh, Shamar, of course, the wide receiver, uh,
- 0:15Speaker 1: coach coming off a win and a bye week. So
- 0:17Speaker 1: we're going to start there. We want to, we don't
- 0:19Speaker 1: want to forget about what happened at temple because that
- 0:21Speaker 1: was a positive result. Uh, The first half was kind
- 0:26Speaker 1: of wild. I didn't know who was playing defense. There
- 0:29Speaker 1: was so much going on in that first half. Good
- 0:32Speaker 1: recovery in the second half, but let's start there. In
- 0:34Speaker 1: the first half, I mean, offense ruled the day, didn't it?
- 0:39Speaker 2: Well, nobody was playing any defense, to answer your question. But,
- 0:44Speaker 2: you know, I mean, one of these days we're going
- 0:46Speaker 2: to figure out how to win a coin toss, too,
- 0:47Speaker 2: and not have to take the ball every time. But,
- 0:49Speaker 2: you know, we were able to get a score on
- 0:52Speaker 2: the first possession, and they had to kind of broke
- 0:55Speaker 2: us into a little bit of a rhythm and, you know,
- 0:58Speaker 2: just stayed hot through the first quarter there. And I,
- 1:01Speaker 2: you know, think like, or give credit to our defense.
- 1:03Speaker 2: We did a really good job in the second half where,
- 1:06Speaker 2: you know, in the third quarter, we didn't do much
- 1:08Speaker 2: of anything on offense and they really hung in there
- 1:09Speaker 2: and kept us in there. We punted the ball well
- 1:11Speaker 2: in the third quarter. So we were able to flip
- 1:12Speaker 2: the field. Like we were 46 plus and average, you know,
- 1:16Speaker 2: net punt in that third quarter, the two times we
- 1:18Speaker 2: did punt, you know, so we made them drive the
- 1:21Speaker 2: long field and our defense, you know, got stops and
- 1:23Speaker 2: then we were able to, you know, hit, get back
- 1:25Speaker 2: in stride and back in rhythm in the fourth quarter. So,
- 1:28Speaker 2: but yeah, hot start on offense, uh, not what you
- 1:30Speaker 2: want to see out of your defense to start the game, but, uh,
- 1:33Speaker 2: really proud of the response.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Yeah. Starts have been a real positive for, for your teams,
- 1:38Speaker 1: your team here. And I'm assuming throughout your career, it
- 1:41Speaker 1: just feels like you guys come out of the gate
- 1:44Speaker 1: ready and you got, uh, you know, momentum to start
- 1:47Speaker 1: a game and that's not easy. You know, sometimes you
- 1:50Speaker 1: can't get on track, but first quarters have been UConn, uh,
- 1:55Speaker 1: UConn strength so far this season. What goes into that?
- 1:58Speaker 1: Do you think?
- 1:59Speaker 2: Well, I'll give our coaching staff a lot of, a
- 2:01Speaker 2: lot of credit, give our players a lot of credit,
- 2:03Speaker 2: you know, to, you know, to be able to, you know,
- 2:06Speaker 2: get our guys ready to go in the morning at
- 2:07Speaker 2: the hotel and, and get them, you know, ready to
- 2:10Speaker 2: go out and start and start fast. It's a great
- 2:15Speaker 2: asset to have if you can do it, but you can't,
- 2:17Speaker 2: you can't count on it every week.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Right.
- 2:18Speaker 2: I mean, there's so many variables that you can't control.
- 2:20Speaker 2: And the other teams that you play, they got scholarships too. So,
- 2:24Speaker 2: You've got to be able to plan for those, but
- 2:27Speaker 2: if it doesn't go your way, so what? You've got
- 2:28Speaker 2: to get back and you've got to figure it out
- 2:30Speaker 2: and you've got to coach in-game and make the adjustments
- 2:32Speaker 2: necessary to be successful. Credit to our kids Saturday because
- 2:35Speaker 2: I think that hot start really set the table for
- 2:38Speaker 2: the whole game.
- 2:40Speaker 1: That first half was a seesaw affair. I think that's
- 2:44Speaker 1: something you've been talking about the last few weeks about
- 2:47Speaker 1: bouncing back, being resilient. It's something I think football coaches
- 2:51Speaker 1: all talk about, but the chemistry of that and making
- 2:54Speaker 1: that actually happen game day, what goes into that? I mean,
- 2:58Speaker 1: how do you develop that? How do you get your
- 3:01Speaker 1: team to be resilient and not, you know, get down
- 3:04Speaker 1: when things don't go well?
- 3:08Speaker 2: I think it starts with, you know, just being able
- 3:10Speaker 2: to have a vision for how you want to create
- 3:12Speaker 2: the culture of your football team, you know, and in
- 3:14Speaker 2: recruiting and player acquisitions, you, you just, you got to
- 3:18Speaker 2: say no to some guys that just don't have that
- 3:20Speaker 2: toughness element and don't have the, you know, the ability
- 3:24Speaker 2: to get off the mat when it doesn't go their way.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Because in this game, it's not going to go your
- 3:28Speaker 2: way more times than it does go your way. So,
- 3:30Speaker 2: you know, you get 12 guaranteed opportunities a year, roughly
- 3:34Speaker 2: three hours and some change of football, you know, per
- 3:37Speaker 2: Saturday afternoon or whatever they let you play. But, you know,
- 3:41Speaker 2: you're under 40 hours in the season of actual gameplay. So,
- 3:45Speaker 2: you know, the other time that goes into just for
- 3:48Speaker 2: those 40 hours is it's incredible. So, guys got to
- 3:51Speaker 2: be able to be very process driven. They got to
- 3:53Speaker 2: be very, you know, I heard Kirby Smart said it
- 3:56Speaker 2: best yesterday, right? I mean, humility is only a week
- 4:00Speaker 2: away and, you know, that's just, just what it is.
- 4:03Speaker 2: I mean, everybody's good. Anybody, everybody can beat anybody. And
- 4:07Speaker 2: the parity is, you know, with this NIL stuff and
- 4:09Speaker 2: the transfer portal, there's more parity than there's ever been. So,
- 4:12Speaker 2: you know, you gotta, you gotta hone in on the
- 4:14Speaker 2: things and have a good process back in January and
- 4:17Speaker 2: then hope that the, you know, what you did for
- 4:19Speaker 2: eight months that way, you know, produces really good results
- 4:21Speaker 2: on the game days that you have in the fall.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Yeah. We're going to talk to Shamar Porter and Tajay
- 4:27Speaker 1: Mullix a little bit later. Both guys transferred. Shamar Porter
- 4:31Speaker 1: came before you were here, but Tajay Mullix was telling
- 4:34Speaker 1: us about his conversations with you, his meeting with you.
- 4:40Speaker 1: how quickly can you analyze a person, a player, when
- 4:44Speaker 1: they come to you? And they're thinking, well, I might
- 4:46Speaker 1: come to UConn. I don't know. That's a tough spot
- 4:50Speaker 1: for you, I think. And I wonder what you look at.
- 4:53Speaker 1: How do you converse? What are you trying to find
- 4:56Speaker 1: in a player who you don't really know?
- 4:59Speaker 2: Well, I'm not changing. So, you know, me, you know, like, hey,
- 5:04Speaker 2: this is what the program wants and this is what
- 5:07Speaker 2: we're trying to do. And um who we want to
- 5:10Speaker 2: be trying to get kids to believe in things that
- 5:15Speaker 2: they don't believe in that's just a that's uphill that's
- 5:18Speaker 2: an uphill battle that's just it's just hard so um
- 5:21Speaker 2: you try to really do a good job in the
- 5:23Speaker 2: in the evaluation phase of trying to find like-minded people
- 5:25Speaker 2: i mean you really got to love football and i
- 5:28Speaker 2: you don't have to you don't have to love the
- 5:29Speaker 2: things that go along with football because i think a
- 5:31Speaker 2: lot of young people love the things that go along
- 5:33Speaker 2: with football um you know, I watched my seven-year-old son
- 5:36Speaker 2: play flag football, and every kid's got a pair of gloves,
- 5:39Speaker 2: two arm sleeves, a binky mouthpiece, and pink cleats, and
- 5:42Speaker 2: high socks, and they look great. I mean, it looks like,
- 5:46Speaker 2: it looks like, man, oh man, this guy just maxed
- 5:48Speaker 2: out mom's credit card at Dick's, right? So, but that
- 5:52Speaker 2: stuff's all out the window when you get to this
- 5:53Speaker 2: level of football, because it's four to six seconds of
- 5:56Speaker 2: somebody else, another grown man hitting you right in the
- 5:58Speaker 2: mouth and putting his hands on you. So, You know,
- 6:00Speaker 2: nobody really cares what you look like. It's about, you know, really,
- 6:03Speaker 2: did you really buy into the process of preparing really well?
- 6:06Speaker 2: And are you ready for those tough moments? And I
- 6:09Speaker 2: don't want to be part of an organization. I don't
- 6:11Speaker 2: want to coach a team that lacks toughness and lacks
- 6:13Speaker 2: resiliency and lacks the heart to fight when things don't
- 6:16Speaker 2: go their way. So I really just try to really
- 6:18Speaker 2: hard to make sure we don't bring people into our
- 6:20Speaker 2: program that, you know, that fold when things get tough.
- 6:23Speaker 1: You got to, you have to be that way. No
- 6:25Speaker 1: question about it. All right, Jason Candle with us. Quick timeout.
- 6:28Speaker 1: We'll be back in just a moment. The UConn Football
- 6:30Speaker 1: Coaches Show on Learfield continues.
