- 0:22there is no law. And so we have been walking

- 0:30doesn't have to shout. And so we are here at

- 0:54your sit down on the couch, grab some coffee,
- 0:56walk on your treadmill, take some movement and
- 0:59enjoy this episode. Today's today we're going
- 1:01to be stepping into word that most people misunderstand,
- 1:03overlook, or even avoid because they think it
- 1:07makes them weak. But biblically, spiritually,
- 1:10practically, gentleness is not weakness. Gentleness
- 1:13is strength under control of the Holy Spirit,
- 1:17which is like meekness, which was our word of
- 1:21the year before meekness was just strength under
- 1:24control. And so gentleness is not passive. Gentleness
- 1:27is not timidity. Gentleness is not softness in
- 1:30personality. Gentleness is not being a pushover
- 1:34or a doormat or someone who never speaks up.
- 1:37Gentleness is Christ -like strength governed
- 1:41by love. It is courage with compassion. It is
- 1:45power under submission. And it is truth delivered
- 1:48with tenderness. It is firmness without cruelty.
- 1:52It is conviction without aggression. It is authority
- 1:55without arrogance. And I want to start off this
- 1:59with if gentleness feels unnatural to you, that
- 2:03does not mean that you're not that you're unspiritual.
- 2:06It means that you're human. We naturally default
- 2:11to self -protection, defensiveness, pride, harshness.
- 2:15That's the flesh. That's the fall. Gentleness
- 2:18is supernatural. Gentleness is a fruit. The fruit
- 2:22of the spirit. The fruit is not manufactured.
- 2:26It is not produced through it is produced by
- 2:29abiding in Christ. And the Bible says in Galatians
- 2:325 22 through 23, but the fruit of the spirit
- 2:36is love, joy, peace, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
- 2:41gentleness and self -control. Gentleness is not
- 2:45a personality trait. It is a Holy Spirit product.
- 2:50And so let's talk about Jesus, because if we're
- 2:52going to understand gentleness, we have to see
- 2:55it in him. And in Matthew 11, 28 through 29,
- 2:59Jesus says, come to me, all who are weary and
- 3:01burdened, and I will give you rest. And then
- 3:04he says, take upon my yoke and learn from me,
- 3:08for I am gentle and humble in heart. The only
- 3:12place that Jesus personally describes his own
- 3:14heart is right here. He doesn't say he is powerful
- 3:18and humble. He says he doesn't say that he is
- 3:21mighty and humble He says that he is gentle and
- 3:24humble the savior of the world the one who commands
- 3:27the storms with his voice The one who cast out
- 3:30demons the one who holds the galaxy together
- 3:33He describes himself as gentle Gentleness is
- 3:38the heart of Jesus and because gentleness is
- 3:41the heart of Jesus Gentleness becomes the mark
- 3:44of someone who truly is walking with him And
- 3:47this is why Paul in Ephesians 4 -2 urges believers
- 3:50to walk in a manner worthy of calling with all
- 3:54humility and gentleness. Not some, but all. Meaning
- 3:59gentleness is not optimal for a believer. It's
- 4:03not optional. It is essential. It is a calling.
- 4:06It is a posture. It is a sign of someone who
- 4:09has been walking with Jesus long enough that
- 4:12his nature begins to shape theirs. But gentleness
- 4:17doesn't mean that you avoid hard truth. Gentleness
- 4:21does not mean tolerating sin. Gentleness does
- 4:24not mean silence in the face of injustice. Just
- 4:28gentleness is how you carry your strength. It's
- 4:31how you hold truth. It's how you treat people
- 4:34who are fragile, who are hurting, who are defensive,
- 4:37who are struggling. And the Holy Spirit produces
- 4:40a gentleness that allows you to speak with boldness
- 4:43and tenderness at the same time. And let's go
- 4:47through Proverbs because you know, that's where
- 4:48I'm at. Um, between Proverbs and Psalms. And
- 4:54so Proverbs 15 one, a gentle answer turns away
- 4:57wrath, but harsh words stir up anger. Gentleness
- 5:00diffuses what pride ignites. Gentleness disarms
- 5:04what harshness provokes and gentleness softens
- 5:07fear where it hardens. Gentleness opens what
- 5:11hostility closes and gentleness can reach people.
- 5:15without shouting what shouting will never do.
- 5:20Think about Jesus when he caught the woman in
- 5:22adultery in John 8, the crowd was ready to stone
- 5:24her. They want judgment, exposure, shame. They
- 5:27dragged her out of the temple as for humiliation,
- 5:31as entertainment. And Jesus knelt down. He lowers
- 5:36himself. He positions himself below her shame
- 5:40and he writes in the dirt. He silences the accusers
- 5:45without a single harsh word and when he finally
- 5:49asks her speaks to her he says Neither do I condemn
- 5:54you go and from now on sin no more That's gentleness
- 6:00truth without a humiliation correction without
- 6:03condemnation and holiness without harshness We
- 6:07think that we need harshness to produce holiness
- 6:10in people But Jesus used gentleness. And let's
- 6:16take another moment. In a moment when Peter,
- 6:19after the resurrection in John 21, Peter failed.
- 6:23Not small, not privately, but he denied Jesus
- 6:27three times after promising he'd die for him.
- 6:30And Jesus appears again. He doesn't say, Peter,
- 6:34explain yourself. He doesn't say, prove you changed.
- 6:39He asks only this. Do you love me? Three times.
- 6:45For each failure. That's gentleness. Restoring
- 6:49someone without reminding them of their shame.
- 6:53And the Holy Spirit wants to cultivate this in
- 6:55you. Not a personality version. Not a quiet version.
- 7:00Not a soft spoken version. A Christ -like version.
- 7:04A gentleness that is strong enough to stay calm
- 7:06in conflict. A gentleness that speaks truth without
- 7:10cruelty. A gentleness that corrects without crushing.
- 7:14A gentleness that listens without assuming. And
- 7:16a gentleness that loves without controlling.
- 7:19And hear me, gentleness is not weakness. Gentleness
- 7:22requires strength. It takes strength to hold
- 7:25your tongue, which I am still working on. Strength
- 7:30to remain calm. Strength to choose patience.
- 7:34Strength to bless instead of curse. Strength
- 7:37to answer softly when you want to shout. Still
- 7:40working on that. Strength to forgive whenever
- 7:43you want to fight. Strength to trust when you
- 7:46want to take control. Weakness reacts. Strength
- 7:50responds and gentleness chooses the response
- 7:53that honors God. And so let's talk about Proverbs
- 7:5716 32. He who is slow to anger is better than
- 8:01the mighty and he rules his spirit than he who
- 8:06captures a city. According to scripture, self
- 8:09-control and gentleness are greater vectors than
- 8:14conquest. God doesn't measure strength by domination.
- 8:18He measures strength by self -governance. The
- 8:21strongest person in the room is not the loudest.
- 8:24It's the one whose heart is ruled by the spirit
- 8:27instead of emotion. Think about what Paul writing
- 8:31to Timothy in 2nd Timothy 2, 24 -25. He says,
- 8:35the servant of the Lord must not be quarrelsome,
- 8:39but be kind to all, with gentleness, correcting
- 8:42those who are in oppression. Gentleness corrects.
- 8:47Gentleness confronts. Gentleness sets boundaries,
- 8:50but gentleness does not, but does it with honor,
- 8:54clarity, and compassion. Gentleness does not
- 8:58crush. Gentleness carries. And some of you listening
- 9:02today, the Holy Spirit is going to speak something
- 9:04very specific. You're not harsh because you're
- 9:08evil. You are harsh because you are hurt. Harshness
- 9:12is often a shield, a protector, a reflex, a defense
- 9:15mechanism. The way that you control that because
- 9:19you are afraid that it might spiral. Gentleness
- 9:22doesn't come naturally because gentleness feels
- 9:25vulnerable. It feels like you're giving up power.
- 9:28But the Holy Spirit isn't asking you to give
- 9:30up power. He's asking you to surrender to His
- 9:34power. Gentleness is evidence that you trust
- 9:37God to be your defender. And if we go into Psalm
- 9:411835, David says, Your gentleness makes me great.
- 9:46God's gentleness towards you is what elevates
- 9:50you, what shapes you, what restores you. God's
- 9:52gentleness is not passive. It is powerful. And
- 9:56God's gentleness breaks chains. God's gentleness
- 9:59draws you to repentance. And Romans 2, 4 says
- 10:03it plainly, the kindness of God leads you to
- 10:06repentance, not fear, not shame, not punishment,
- 10:12kindness and gentleness. And now let's make this
- 10:17personal. How is the Holy Spirit calling you
- 10:19into gentleness today? Maybe it's how you talk
- 10:22to your spouse. Maybe it's how you respond to
- 10:25your children. Maybe it's how you deal with disappointment.
- 10:29Maybe it's how you deal with negative conflict,
- 10:33how we navigate through conflict. Maybe it's
- 10:36how you speak to yourself. Maybe it's how you
- 10:39talk to God. Gentleness isn't something that
- 10:42you perform. Gentleness is something that the
- 10:44spirit forms. And let's take you into the last
- 10:50scripture, into Philippians 4. Let your gentle
- 10:52spirit be known to all man. The Lord is near.
- 10:56Your gentleness reveals something that God is
- 10:59close. Gentleness is what happens when your heart
- 11:02is so aware of God's nearness that it doesn't
- 11:05need to defend itself. And so how about some
- 11:08actions to go with this? And so, one. Slow before
- 11:14you speak. Gentleness begins with pace. Before
- 11:18you answer, before you react, before you defend
- 11:21yourself, take a deep breath and sit silently.
- 11:25and say, Holy Spirit, help me respond and not
- 11:28react. Gentleness is the spirit interrupting
- 11:31your reflex so he can shape your response. Proverbs
- 11:3515 .1 teach that a gentle answer turns away wrath,
- 11:39but a gentle answer often starts with a pause.
- 11:45Two, lower your volume and raise the love. Gentleness
- 11:50is strength under control. You can say the same
- 11:54truth in two tones one wounds and one heals Ask
- 11:59yourself. Am I trying to win the argument or
- 12:03win the person? The Holy Spirit can lower your
- 12:06volume and raise your love So your words carry
- 12:09life and not injury in any of my kids that are
- 12:13potentially listening to this We always talk
- 12:15about edifying edify Your words and so our words
- 12:19are meant to raise up people and not tear them
- 12:22down. And so three, treat people according to
- 12:26their wounds and not their words. Hurting people
- 12:30often speak from pain and not clarity. Gentleness
- 12:33sees past the reaction and recognizes the wound
- 12:36beneath it. Instead of responding to someone's
- 12:39harshness, ask, Holy Spirit, help me see what's
- 12:42broken in them, not just what's allowed in them.
- 12:47And that's how Jesus responded to the woman caught
- 12:50in adultery, to Peter after the denial, and to
- 12:53all of us every day. Gentleness doesn't excuse
- 12:56sin, but it refuses to crush the wounded soul.
- 13:02And so say this out loud today. Holy Spirit,
- 13:06rule my tone, shape my words, guard my reactions,
- 13:13and make gentleness my strength. And so we would
- 13:18love to pray for you guys today. And so, dear
- 13:22Heavenly Father, thank you for today. Thank you
- 13:24for these listeners. Thank you for the Holy Spirit
- 13:27that has already softened what is hard. Thank
- 13:29you for calming what was anxious. Thank you for
- 13:32restoring life, what that was bruised. Thank
- 13:34you, Holy Spirit, for the softened hearts. Thank
- 13:36you that... where harshness was taken root, you
- 13:39uprooted. Thank you that the fear that was created
- 13:41by defensiveness, you bring peace. Thank you
- 13:44for the pain that was created for sharpness,
- 13:45but you're bringing healing. Thank you that you're
- 13:47producing gentleness that looks like Jesus. Thank
- 13:50you for the strong but tender truthful. Thank
- 13:53you for compassion. Thank you for boldness that
- 13:55is humble. Thank you for the words that carry
- 13:57grace. Thank you for the tone that carries love.
- 13:59Thank you for the presence that carries peace.
- 14:01Thank you for making us gentle. and not in just
- 14:04something that we're doing, but something that
- 14:05we're becoming. Thank you for all that you are
- 14:07doing. In Jesus name, I pray. Amen. And I hope
- 14:11that this message inspired you, that we take
- 14:14a reflection in what we are. And God is just
- 14:17teaching me as much as he is teaching you. And
- 14:19so if we sit in his presence and we have our
- 14:21hands open handed and we are listening and learning
- 14:24and leaning in into the correction and just as
- 14:27many times as we need to just to see the wrath
- 14:30of God. Just how many times? Every time that
- 14:32we ascend the wrath of God, I mean, so we cannot
- 14:35be in his presence, but his gentleness, his grace,
- 14:37his mercy is just there every day. And so he
- 14:40shows us his gentleness every day because we
- 14:43deserve so much more than what we get, that he
- 14:46is just so gentle and kind and he's just so loving.
- 14:50And so we are to be his reflection of him every
- 14:52day. And so I hope that this lesson is just this
- 14:56gets you back into scripture and to give you
- 14:58just to walk into his presence. We hope this
- 15:00message encourage you. If it does, please send
- 15:03a review. Rate us on the podcast or whatever
- 15:07you're listening on and leave us a comment. We
