- 0:04- This is the Pop Culture Junkie podcast.
- 0:06I'm Olivia here with Shauna.
- 0:08And we're so pleased you have elected to spend time with us.
- 0:12We're all about choice here.
- 0:13And the fact that you choose Pop Culture Junkie
- 0:16means everything to us.
- 0:18- So it's been a little bit, what have you been up to, Shana?
- 0:21- Oh, you know, just hanging with celebrities.
- 0:23(laughing)
- 0:26- Yes.
- 0:27- Yeah, so as previously mentioned, and with the yes on top,
- 0:30one, three, nine team in Arizona,
- 0:33this is my first election I've worked on.
- 0:36I've worked for a lot of like pro choice organizations
- 0:40for years, but never a political campaign.
- 0:43And getting to see like the inner workings
- 0:45of the political campaign is so interesting.
- 0:48And just every day, there's something every single day, right?
- 0:51And so we had Chrissy Teigen come to town this past weekend.
- 0:57- How did that go?
- 0:57'Cause I know you didn't wanna like her initially.
- 1:00- Oh my God, you know, I did think about my feelings
- 1:03for Chrissy Teigen as I was very like neutral.
- 1:05Like I didn't really know much about her,
- 1:06except for like, she's--
- 1:07- That's what it means to not answer.
- 1:08- Yeah, and I knew she was like hot and funny.
- 1:11- And married to John Legend.
- 1:12- And married to John Legend.
- 1:13- She is an amazing cook.
- 1:14- Yeah.
- 1:16- It's not like I didn't like her.
- 1:17I just didn't really like know much about her.
- 1:19- About her to be fair.
- 1:20It's kind of like how I feel about just any kind of
- 1:22neutral celebrity, I don't know.
- 1:23After meeting her, I'm obsessed with Chrissy Teigen.
- 1:27I'm absolutely a fan.
- 1:28- She was amazing.
- 1:29So she came to Arizona specifically to canvas with us,
- 1:34met some abortion storytellers at a coffee shop
- 1:38and literally just sat with these women
- 1:40and talked about her abortion experience
- 1:42from a wanted pregnancy.
- 1:44They all told their stories.
- 1:46Then she came outside, did a little rally.
- 1:48And then it was just me and her plus her entire entourage.
- 1:53In a sprinter van, which I had never been in,
- 1:56but they were like, oh, just getting our van,
- 1:58just get in with us.
- 1:59'Cause I was gonna just follow behind them in my car
- 2:01and they were like, no, we have an extra seat.
- 2:03Oh my God, okay.
- 2:04- Okay.
- 2:05- Is there candy?
- 2:06- Literally.
- 2:07- Oh my God.
- 2:08So I told Chrissy, there's three rules to canvassing,
- 2:12like three no-nose.
- 2:13Don't go in anyone's house.
- 2:15Don't ask for any candy or don't accept candy
- 2:18from strangers and don't prine to their personal lives.
- 2:21And she did all three of those and it was really funny.
- 2:22(laughing)
- 2:24She literally walked into somebody's house
- 2:26to hug their husband and she came back out and was like,
- 2:29Chrissy, we talked about this girl.
- 2:33- Did you have like security with her?
- 2:34- Yes, so.
- 2:35- Was her security like, yeah, you could see
- 2:38I'm just rolling his eyes.
- 2:39I mean, okay, spoiler, but peak behind the curtain.
- 2:41The houses we went to were like pre-vetted.
- 2:43- Okay, yeah, good.
- 2:44- So we didn't just show.
- 2:45- I was wondering how that worked.
- 2:47'Cause I'm like, ooh.
- 2:48- You don't just show up to random strangers' houses
- 2:50because we don't know if they're security risks.
- 2:52- I mean, we do.
- 2:53- I do all the time.
- 2:54- Fuck, fuck, fuck, Shauna's health and safety.
- 2:57Chrissy Teigan, let's, yeah.
- 3:00No, when you think about this celebrity,
- 3:01you go to their house in advance and you're like,
- 3:03"Within the next hour, are you chill
- 3:05if Chrissy Teigan comes by?"
- 3:06And they're like, oh, yeah.
- 3:08- Yeah.
- 3:09- Absolutely.
- 3:10Yes, please.
- 3:11- Yes, please, that's so cool.
- 3:12- Yeah.
- 3:13So everybody was very sweet to her and she seemed like
- 3:15genuinely really excited to be there.
- 3:17It was so nice to me and like, asking about my life
- 3:20and where I was just joking around.
- 3:23And then once we were done, we went back for a final rally
- 3:26and she was like sitting there and I was kind of on the side
- 3:28'cause I was working and she turned around casually and saw me
- 3:31and went, like, we waved all the throos yesically
- 3:34and made the little heart sign and I waved back
- 3:36and my coworkers looked at me and they're like,
- 3:38you guys are like friends now, Shauna.
- 3:40(laughing)
- 3:41I mean, it's hard not to like this.
- 3:42Oh my God.
- 3:44And then as we were walking out and her security was there
- 3:47and people were like, ambushing her,
- 3:48like this guy showed up with like bathing suit posters
- 3:51of her and her security guard to be like,
- 3:53oh everybody back, hurry back.
- 3:54She came up to me and like grabbed my shoulder
- 3:57and was like, oh my God, Shauna was so nice
- 3:58to hang out with you and it's like,
- 4:00all right, I'm officially fucking a lovely person.
- 4:02- Yeah, like can I take that sign and will you sign it?
- 4:04- Yeah, I can take that sign and post her 'cause we're in love now.
- 4:08But yeah, she was delightful.
- 4:09She was very kind and very sweet.
- 4:11So, yeah, you can go crazy to him.
- 4:13- Yeah, you can really do it all 'cause you went out
- 4:15the night before and that was quite the feat.
- 4:17- Yeah, it was.
- 4:18We had a good time though.
- 4:20- That was a good time.
- 4:20- Yeah, we were bar maidens.
- 4:23The bar maidens, I don't know.
- 4:24- Yeah, maidens.
- 4:25- Maiden sounds more.
- 4:27- Maiden sounds original though.
- 4:29- Oh, does it?
- 4:30I thought it was more like--
- 4:31- She's a maiden,
- 4:32- Maiden, you're on our maiden voyage.
- 4:34- I think like Maiden mother and crow.
- 4:36(laughing)
- 4:39- Yeah, so perfect fitting for us, we are innocent.
- 4:42- We're just innocent,
- 4:43we're not virgin bar maidens.
- 4:45(laughing)
- 4:47- I say with my devil t-shirt.
- 4:48- Yeah.
- 4:49(laughing)
- 4:51- But yeah, I went out the night before with you guys
- 4:53and we danced and it was fun.
- 4:54- We went to Thundercat Lounge in Arizona,
- 4:57which I've never been to, but it was so fun.
- 4:59- It was great, they played great music.
- 5:01It was like a lot of 80s synth pop and like the whole vibe
- 5:04and there was like neon 80s.
- 5:05- And then they hit us with iconopop, Charlie X-X.
- 5:09- Yeah, that was like right before I left and I swear,
- 5:12I lost my voice, you can still kind of hear me
- 5:14- It was just from screaming, Britney Spears,
- 5:18Chapel Rones.
- 5:19- We did H-O-T-O-G-O, like really, we would all out.
- 5:23- I was so proud because I've introduced so many people
- 5:25to Chapel Rones and everyone was doing it.
- 5:27- I wouldn't have known Chapel Rones if it wasn't people.
- 5:29- Yeah, you don't, even introduced me to him before
- 5:31she got like super popular to your sound.
- 5:34- You're not like the other girls.
- 5:35- It's okay, I found her on TikTok,
- 5:37but I just found her like a little bit sooner
- 5:38'cause you never check your TikTok.
- 5:40- I was locked out of my TikTok.
- 5:42- I tried because you never joked.
- 5:44- I tried to get back in the other day
- 5:46'cause I wanted to make a TikTok for work
- 5:48and I ended up having to do it on reels
- 5:50'cause I'm just, I'm locked out.
- 5:52I'm totally locked out.
- 5:53- I'm just like,
- 5:54- Is this thing called password reason?
- 5:55- No, I tried and listen girl.
- 5:58It was like a solid 45 minutes.
- 6:00- It's okay, you're younger, intelligent friend.
- 6:03Well, I'll do a reset your password.
- 6:05- I'm just, you can give big, maiden energy.
- 6:08I'm giving crone energy, right?
- 6:09- How do I get back into this damn tick?
- 6:13- Yeah, none of us are mothers,
- 6:15except unless we're counting Ziggy and puppies.
- 6:17- Oh, and toast.
- 6:18- And toast.
- 6:18- But yeah, maybe you can help me get back into this.
- 6:21I have like 200 unbeknown TikToks from you.
- 6:24- Probably, I've actually been super busy,
- 6:26so I haven't been on it as much.
- 6:27- Send me reels instead that I can do.
- 6:30- No, not that old.
- 6:32(laughing)
- 6:34- I love asking the younger volunteers.
- 6:36I'm like, I have a so great working with you today.
- 6:38Do you have an insta?
- 6:39And they're like, no, I don't.
- 6:40- I have a TikTok.
- 6:41- I have a TikTok and I'm like,
- 6:42wow, shit.
- 6:43- Yeah.
- 6:44- Well, I have a huge dimension.
- 6:46- At least I need to ask for your Facebook.
- 6:48(laughing)
- 6:49- Well, I love that.
- 6:49- What have you been up to?
- 6:51- So I went to San Francisco again.
- 6:54- Shocked.
- 6:55- Yes, I know.
- 6:56For work.
- 6:57And what I did this time,
- 6:59so instead of saying in a tiny little shoebox hotel,
- 7:02me and my coworkers actually rented a Airbnb this time.
- 7:07So nice.
- 7:08It was like an older Victorian
- 7:11and was just literally gorgeous.
- 7:14It was like a $2 million home,
- 7:15which was actually a street over from the painted ladies,
- 7:19which you may have seen the painted ladies
- 7:22in the iconic Princess Diaries.
- 7:25And so my coworkers and I did a Princess Diaries marathon.
- 7:29- Oh my God.
- 7:30- Here, they announced them for three years.
- 7:31- Yeah, so I wanna talk about it.
- 7:33- So it's very timely for pop culture.
- 7:35Now, I think rewatching the first one
- 7:38really holds up to just like a good movie,
- 7:41like fun watching at 31 and be like, "This is amazing."
- 7:45I really love it.
- 7:46I did not remember how cheesy the second one was.
- 7:50- All I remember is Chris Pine.
- 7:53Do they get depth together in the second one?
- 7:55- Yes.
- 7:56- They do, okay, I remember she's,
- 7:57he's not kind of the evil one trying to steal a crown.
- 8:00- Yeah, but then they fall in love.
- 8:02She changes him because she's so pure art.
- 8:05And then she becomes the queen.
- 8:07- Mm-hmm.
- 8:08- And I think that's all I remember.
- 8:09And when she leads little girls holding their hands
- 8:12and gives them all crowns or something.
- 8:13- Yeah, like her bachelor art party is filled
- 8:15with like 12 girls.
- 8:16And I'm like, "Oh, okay."
- 8:18- I know that part's really dumb.
- 8:19- It's a little cheesier.
- 8:21Like I think they were like,
- 8:22"Oh, our audience really is like this demographic.
- 8:24Well, it's a hint to it."
- 8:25But I am really excited for the third one
- 8:28'cause what she'd be like, she'll be the queen.
- 8:31- She'll be like 40.
- 8:32- 40, yeah.
- 8:33- Chris Pine still is.
- 8:34- So he hasn't confirmed that he's a part of it,
- 8:36but I'm assuming she's executive producer.
- 8:39And so they haven't really gotten that far.
- 8:41It'd be very early in pre-production,
- 8:43but that was amazing.
- 8:44- No, I always make this joke
- 8:45that every time I go to San Francisco,
- 8:46I think about two things.
- 8:48The Prince of Styrates and the Zodiac Killer.
- 8:50(laughing)
- 8:52- So Ted Cruz and Ann have the way.
- 8:54- Yeah, Ted Cruz.
- 8:56- Oh, I was gonna say,
- 8:58- Nipples.
- 8:59- Oh, so yeah, no, I never watched it.
- 9:02- I wasn't in a big full house, Carly.
- 9:04I know the iconic you got it, dude,
- 9:06but I was in Marikay and Ashley Olsen stand
- 9:11once the director DVD.
- 9:13- No, movies can now.
- 9:14- I've never seen any of those either.
- 9:15I feel like I was in that weird little time in my life
- 9:19where we just--
- 9:19- You are the crown.
- 9:20- I am the crown.
- 9:22We were trying to watch rated-hour movies and sleepovers.
- 9:25- Yes, yeah.
- 9:26I mean, I don't think they're very good to go back on
- 9:29at this age, but they are iconic.
- 9:31Megan Fox got her start.
- 9:33- And then I owned in the sun one.
- 9:35- That is so cute.
- 9:36- The mean hot girl.
- 9:38- Of course she's a mean hot girl.
- 9:39(laughing)
- 9:41- And so funny enough, the next night,
- 9:45Netflix released a Zodiac Killer documentary.
- 9:48- Oh, okay, got a lot of that.
- 9:49- Yeah, it's pretty good.
- 9:50They're making a case for this man named Robert Allen
- 9:54to actually be the Zodiac Killer.
- 9:56I mean, every single Zodiac Killer documentary
- 9:59makes a case for like, who is this person?
- 10:01- A different person, yeah.
- 10:02- And one of the most interesting updates
- 10:05with the Zodiac Killer is they've never been able
- 10:08to fully solve this, all the ciphers.
- 10:10- Yeah.
- 10:11- But they've gotten, I wanna say two,
- 10:13but AI is actually now helping to solve it.
- 10:16- Oh yeah.
- 10:17- So they may actually solve it.
- 10:17- I was gonna say, we just need to get an autistic person
- 10:19on the case.
- 10:20- Listen.
- 10:21(laughing)
- 10:22- And so.
- 10:23- They won't solve that shit in two minutes.
- 10:25- Yeah, I watched one on Amazon Prime.
- 10:28I think it's also in Hulu.
- 10:30That was a really good one as well.
- 10:31I mean, the case for like, these three different people
- 10:34as well, but yeah, I mean, the most interesting part
- 10:37about the Zodiac Killer is he just abruptly stopped.
- 10:40And so he either was imprisoned or--
- 10:43- What year is this in the '60s?
- 10:44- It's in the '70s.
- 10:45- So he could still be alive.
- 10:46- Yeah, so yeah, but pretty old.
- 10:48- Yeah.
- 10:49- And so he's either killed or incarcerated
- 10:54for something else.
- 10:55- He's not the old one.
- 10:56- He's not the old one.
- 10:57- Yeah, he's said, he's like, I was in a silly mood.
- 10:59- Not over it.
- 11:00(laughing)
- 11:01- No more murder for me.
- 11:03- I got to murder, please.
- 11:04- So I got to fulfill both my dreams.
- 11:07I watched that.
- 11:09I also went and saw Smile too.
- 11:11- I loved it.
- 11:13- Yeah, it was so good.
- 11:14- It was like scary.
- 11:16- Yeah, I will say, much goryer.
- 11:19- Yeah, it was gory time.
- 11:20- Was that Smile one?
- 11:21- I had to do this for like one scene.
- 11:24- I had my hands on my face, like, oh God.
- 11:27- Just for a long time.
- 11:28- I want buttery fingers.
- 11:30- Yeah, butter is getting buttered popcorn.
- 11:33- Yeah, I ate so much popcorn.
- 11:35I had a hella bubbleguts that night anyway.
- 11:37- Yeah.
- 11:38(laughing)
- 11:40- But, I mean, I guess it's not really spoiler
- 11:43'cause this is what Smile's about.
- 11:45When the first guy kills himself
- 11:47in the apartment and she watches.
- 11:49- Very disturbing.
- 11:50- I would say, oh my God, this is horrible.
- 11:52- It's dangfully my friend had gone and seen it
- 11:54like earlier in the day and I was like,
- 11:56oh, did you like it?
- 11:57Like, spoiler for your review and she's like,
- 11:58it's much goryer.
- 11:59So I was kind of like primed for it,
- 12:01but I will say, you know, going into it,
- 12:03know that it's a little goryer.
- 12:05- But really good.
- 12:06- Shona and I have talked about how we don't like gory
- 12:08and we still really liked it.
- 12:09I liked it more than the first one.
- 12:11- I did too and I didn't think it was too like over
- 12:13the top gory.
- 12:14Like I can do gory like that where it kind of gives you
- 12:16that like, ugh, sensation.
- 12:19Like Andrew has been watching the terrifying movies
- 12:21and I refuse to watch those.
- 12:23I can't.
- 12:24- Yeah.
- 12:25- Any movie that has the promo of like,
- 12:27people are throwing up in the theater.
- 12:29I'm like, why would I want to do that?
- 12:31- I spent good money on this meal.
- 12:32- I already have enough of this stomach problem.
- 12:34I'm good.
- 12:35- Maybe I already have ideas.
- 12:37(laughing)
- 12:39- And you know, I will say, so they,
- 12:43NEPO baby casting worked its magic probably
- 12:46for the first time ever.
- 12:47It has brain neckl soon in it.
- 12:49- Oh, yeah, just great.
- 12:50- And you can immediately tell that it's
- 12:53triac nookl soon sun.
- 12:54- Naila once you start to see.
- 12:56- Especially with smiles.
- 12:57- Yeah.
- 12:58- Spoilery smiles.
- 12:59- Yeah, don't figure smiles.
- 13:00- And I just loved it.
- 13:02I thought it was really good.
- 13:03And yeah, there is something about that smile
- 13:06that is just so creepy.
- 13:08- I was doing it to Andrew for days after.
- 13:10- Oh, it's just like,
- 13:11(laughing)
- 13:12- Oh, you're actually pretty good at that.
- 13:13- Thank you.
- 13:14- Yeah, I really need to be.
- 13:15- You're really pretty.
- 13:16(laughing)
- 13:18- If you do that plus the rocking,
- 13:20like paranormal activity.
- 13:21- Oh, you got this like both.
- 13:23- Yeah.
- 13:24- Yeah, again, I would totally knock you out.
- 13:26- That time though.
- 13:27- He dropped me up at Walgreens,
- 13:28like the next day and he's like,
- 13:30I'm gonna stay in the car and I was like,
- 13:31I gotta go get that on a tampon or lip gloss or some
- 13:34girl shit.
- 13:34- You know, yeah, girl bangs.
- 13:36(laughing)
- 13:37- I get out of the car and I just stand in front of the car
- 13:39and I'm just like,
- 13:40(laughing)
- 13:42and you can't see him in the car.
- 13:43He's like, get the fuck in there.
- 13:45He's like, about to get up.
- 13:46He's like, stop it.
- 13:48- He just drives you off the road.
- 13:50I get back in the car and he's like,
- 13:51people can see.
- 13:52(laughing)
- 13:54- I don't care.
- 13:55- He's like, I knock on doors for a living right now.
- 13:58I have no chance.
- 13:59I literally like, I do not care.
- 14:00- Yeah.
- 14:01- People think, yeah, don't care.
- 14:03Maybe I should care more.
- 14:04(laughing)
- 14:05- Oh, I love that.
- 14:06Anything else you've really watched in a middle break?
- 14:09- Oh god, I've just been watching a lot of scary movies.
- 14:11I watched Sleepy Hollow for the first time.
- 14:13- I know, I've never seen it all the way through.
- 14:16- He's a classic.
- 14:16- I really enjoyed it.
- 14:17- Johnny Depp was so hot.
- 14:19- He's so hot.
- 14:20- I love it.
- 14:20- Christina Ricci is really pretty.
- 14:21- Yeah.
- 14:22- So I really enjoyed that.
- 14:23I watched a movie called Strange Darling.
- 14:26- I don't know if I've seen it.
- 14:27- Yeah, it's definitely like a kind of under the radar
- 14:30thriller.
- 14:31I don't want to spoil the thing about it
- 14:33because it starts one way and you think you know
- 14:35where it's going.
- 14:37- Oh god, I don't know.
- 14:37- No one knows.
- 14:38- Oh my god, okay, the actor who is in Jennifer's body.
- 14:41- Oh, I'm in.
- 14:42- Seafreech.
- 14:43- No, it's the guy who plays like the little golf boyfriend.
- 14:45- Oh, funny.
- 14:47- He's in a told man when he's hot as hell.
- 14:49He's so fine.
- 14:50Great mustache.
- 14:51- We watched Jennifer's body.
- 14:53This is so random.
- 14:54But I knew a girl in a high school who is cousins with him.
- 14:58And they have the same very flat face.
- 15:01Sorry.
- 15:02And every time I see him, I can't not see that girl.
- 15:06- Look at him now.
- 15:07I don't know.
- 15:08I didn't even realize it was him until later.
- 15:10And I was like, there's no.
- 15:11I had a bad mushroom trip with that girl though.
- 15:14So I think it's just imprinted in my brain.
- 15:16- You're gonna watch this movie
- 15:17and just have like mushroom flashbacks.
- 15:19Oh my god.
- 15:20Literally, I know.
- 15:22- Literally.
- 15:23- I'm very handsome now.
- 15:24- Okay.
- 15:25I'll watch it.
- 15:26- Great movie.
- 15:27Yeah.
- 15:28It reminded me kind of like, oh gosh.
- 15:29What's that movie that came out last year where it looks like it's gonna be about an Airbnb
- 15:33gone wrong and then all of a sudden there's a monster in the walls.
- 15:35- Yeah.
- 15:36That movie is so bad.
- 15:38- I love our very--
- 15:39- It's like two separate movies put together.
- 15:41- The only reason it reminded me of this is because when the movie starts, you're like,
- 15:43oh, this is a movie about XYZ.
- 15:45- Okay.
- 15:46- And then about halfway through.
- 15:47You're like, oh, this is not a movie about XYZ.
- 15:48- Is it as jarring of a jump?
- 15:50- No.
- 15:51- Okay, good.
- 15:52- It makes sense.
- 15:53It's just like, only in the way that like, you think you know where you're going within and
- 15:58it's not.
- 15:59So I definitely would recommend that.
- 16:00I love that.
- 16:01Well, since you've been having such a foray into politics as of late, we wanted to talk
- 16:07about a better time, a time before the madness of our political season where politicians
- 16:15could just be good people on camera.
- 16:19We'll talk about that after the break.
- 16:21- Yeah.
- 16:22- My fellow junkies, Shana and I don't have to tell you or anyone, that is an election happening
- 16:32in this country.
- 16:33You've gotten 20,000 texts probably while watching this episode.
- 16:36- But it come like it, my phone number.
- 16:38- Yeah, so weird.
- 16:39- Madala, what are you doing here?
- 16:41Unfortunately, even your dog probably knows that it is an election season.
- 16:46- Oh, she knows because I've been very anxious.
- 16:48- I just need to hold you.
- 16:51The other day, you sent that video of her wet and I, it was so jarring.
- 16:57It was like, she's so much tired of you.
- 17:00- No, it looked like a demon for a second.
- 17:03It was like, Buffy is like, "You, what did she do to you?"
- 17:06- Buffy is 90% fluke.
- 17:08- Yeah.
- 17:09- She gets her wet and she's just a little griblin.
- 17:12- Maybe you're lucky.
- 17:13We'll share it here.
- 17:14And we may not know the outcome of the election until after this episode comes out.
- 17:19- Well, actually, Sean is hedging a bet that it comes out on Thursday.
- 17:22I'm praying we wrap it up real quick.
- 17:24- Oh God, I hope so.
- 17:25So we will know the prop 1, 3, 9 results like that night in Arizona and maybe a lot of
- 17:31local races wherever everybody lives.
- 17:34But yeah, I want to know everybody's bets on when the presidential election call is called.
- 17:39And I think November 7th by noon, that's what I'm, I hope it's earlier, but that's what
- 17:44I'm betting.
- 17:45- Yeah.
- 17:46- Like us, you are no doubt dealing with fear, anger, dread, anxiety and maybe even worse.
- 17:52It's quite overwhelming.
- 17:53Buffy would agree.
- 17:55And that's why it made seem a little odd that we're going to talk about politics and pop
- 17:58culture.
- 17:59But where better to retreat to the land of Make Believe in movies and on TV?
- 18:05Big world changing problems can be resolved and as little as 46 minutes.
- 18:09So I wanted to talk about, you know, what is your favorite pop culture, political TV show?
- 18:19Just kind of out of the gate.
- 18:21Last week tonight, which on Oliver.
- 18:23- Okay.
- 18:24- Yeah.
- 18:25We watch that almost every week, unless I'm just too anxious because even though he's hilarious,
- 18:30sometimes he, I watch it and I'm like, I can't, I can't.
- 18:35Because it's all real stuff that he's dealing with and talking about, but in a funny way.
- 18:38He's really educational to us.
- 18:40I love his little segments where he really dives deep into one specific topic.
- 18:46And it's more like, okay, not just like the person, but the systematic problems that
- 18:52come from, like today we're talking about prison reform or like insurance and like, it's
- 18:57really interesting.
- 18:58I've also been a fan of the Daily Show for years through.
- 19:00Well, he came from the Daily Show.
- 19:01Yeah, exactly.
- 19:02So like original John Stewart run and then I really love Trevor Noah.
- 19:06Now, John Stewart's back just when we need him.
- 19:08Yeah.
- 19:09So those are my favorite like, nonfiction, I guess, political shows, but then I loved House
- 19:16of Cards and Parks and Rec, which I know we'll talk about later.
- 19:20Yeah, I would say I was kind of going through and thinking of all of my political TV shows.
- 19:26And I would say that they're very conspiratorial in nature, go figure.
- 19:31Yeah.
- 19:32But you know, I really loved House of Cards.
- 19:36I think, you know, we don't love Kevin Spacey.
- 19:38We can separate the art from the artist.
- 19:40Why did you have to go and blow it like that?
- 19:42We loved that.
- 19:43I mean, I think it's, it's kind of like he was already always a bad person, which is why
- 19:49I think he played the Frank Underwood.
- 19:52Yeah, I almost said Underwood.
- 19:55Frank Underwood from the Underworld.
- 19:57Yeah, I didn't.
- 19:58It's not far off.
- 19:59But Frank Underwood was just such a good character.
- 20:03He was such a good character.
- 20:04And I think he came in a time where, you know, America was really starting to have a
- 20:10disdain for political figures.
- 20:13I mean, I think it's only gotten worse since the show came out.
- 20:16I think there's like this interesting mix right now with people having a disdain for political
- 20:20figures or absolutely worshiping them and idolizing them.
- 20:24Like, I mean, the amount of idolization that goes on around Donald Trump is insane because
- 20:31this man doesn't give two shits about any of you.
- 20:34And people are like getting tattoos and flags and hats and making their Trumpism their entire
- 20:41personality, right?
- 20:42Yes.
- 20:43And I mean, even you could say that for the last two.
- 20:45Like I like Bernie Sanders as much as the next person.
- 20:47Yeah, Bernie.
- 20:48Bernie was going to like just be the, be all in doll.
- 20:52And I don't know, I just, I can't idolize any politician like that.
- 20:56Yeah.
- 20:57And, you know, I think with House of Cards, it really embodies this secret CD like everything
- 21:06is an illusion.
- 21:08Yeah.
- 21:09Start of TV.
- 21:12I was looking at the Rolling Stones' best 20 political movies and TV shows.
- 21:19And what was really interesting going through this list of what's known is like the best political
- 21:25movies of all time is they were really coming out before the 2000s.
- 21:31They were old.
- 21:32I haven't seen many of them.
- 21:33Yeah.
- 21:34And they were representations of, you know, strong political figures that you could trust.
- 21:39And I thought it was such an interesting, you know, dichotomy of how far we've come where
- 21:46you know, like our popular ones are going to be like House of Cards.
- 21:50I really like to get homeland homeland homeland homeland homeland homeland homeland homeland.
- 21:54That's where we're at at a jump.
- 21:56I really liked homeland as well, which is, you know, very conspiratorial.
- 22:01I never forget that before.
- 22:03Oh my gosh.
- 22:04Everybody gets so good.
- 22:06So good.
- 22:07So homeland is about the CIA and it's about this imperfect CIA agent.
- 22:15And she is with Claire Danes plays her.
- 22:19Oh, okay.
- 22:20What's his name?
- 22:21I can't remember his name.
- 22:22Damian Lewis isn't it?
- 22:24And basically he is like a prisoner of war who comes back.
- 22:28Oh, okay.
- 22:29And he's been turned into like a jihad.
- 22:31And but they don't know it.
- 22:33And he starts to get put up this like political ladder into becoming like a senator and all
- 22:39the stuff.
- 22:40And he's like infiltrating the whole time.
- 22:41Yeah.
- 22:42And Claire Danes is like the only one who's been in the CIA.
- 22:44And who's convinced that he's been turned.
- 22:47And so it's like the story, but she's also bipolar.
- 22:50And so she makes like these really dumb decisions.
- 22:53And not that big bipolar has he made dumb decisions.
- 22:56But she is trying to hide her mental illness and like you can't really do that.
- 23:01And sure.
- 23:02And so when you say Claire Danes, like now I can picture her like on a poster or something
- 23:06with it.
- 23:07Yes, where she has like that.
- 23:08Well, I wrapped around her.
- 23:10Exactly.
- 23:11Maybe I'll give it a whirl.
- 23:12That's really an interesting thing.
- 23:13I think it's like a really good thing to do.
- 23:16I think it's like a really good thing to do.
- 23:18I think it's like a really good thing to do.
- 23:20And I think it's like a really good thing to do.
- 23:21And I think it's like a really good thing to do.
- 23:22And I think it's like a really good thing to do.
- 23:23And I think it's like a really good thing to do.
- 23:24And I think it's like a really good thing to do.
- 23:25And I think it's like a really good thing to do.
- 23:26And I think it's like a really good thing to do.
- 23:27And I think it's like a really good thing to do.
- 23:28And I think it's like a really good thing to do.
- 23:29And I think it's like a really good thing to do.
- 23:30And I think it's like a really good thing to do.
- 23:31And I think it's like a really good thing to do.
- 23:50And I think it's like a really good thing to do.
- 23:53And I think it's like a really good thing to do.
- 23:54And I think it's like a really good thing to do.
- 23:55And I think it's like a really good thing to do.
- 23:56And I think it's like a really good thing to do.
- 23:57And I think it's like a really good thing to do.
- 23:58And I think it's like a really good thing to do.
- 23:59is a good representation of our hopefulness back in the 2000s of our belief in political figures.
- 24:07Yeah. They can do right. They can be in here for honor and trust and stuff. That's a really
- 24:12good point. Now, this said, everything is like the city underbelly of what really goes on.
- 24:17I also like to show I didn't watch the whole thing because it kind of fell off, but it was called
- 24:21designated survivor with a cat the same guy from 24. He for someone. There it is. Also, I loved 24,
- 24:29but it was very problem. Oh my god. Yeah. But it's like the whole president's cabinet,
- 24:35like whenever there's a state of the union, everybody goes, but one person stays behind in case there's
- 24:40an attack. Yes. And there's an attack and it's all wiped out. So he goes from being like this
- 24:45low level, lower level like government employed to being the president in like one night.
- 24:49I've watched that with my dad actually. Yeah. It was really in my face. Yeah. And it's like,
- 24:53oh, he's so good. And like, he's imperfect, but like he does the right thing. He's just a dad. He has a
- 24:59strong moral compass. Yeah. I think I should get back on that. House of cards is the opposite where he's
- 25:04got that low moral compass. Yeah. I tried to get my dad to watch House of cards. He's not listening.
- 25:11I love you, dad. He's him and his wife said they couldn't watch it because there is too much
- 25:15oral sex. And like, so that tells me what you guys aren't doing. It's probably good. It's pretty good.
- 25:2560s who cares if there's some kind of lingus. Yeah. Well, Jesus, Jesus cares.
- 25:31They're gentle. Yeah. Well, I think it's a little too close for home to them to look into
- 25:38or politicians. Yeah. One of the interesting things that we were reading through this rolling
- 25:44stone's list and I'll just kind of read the 10, you know, they're from 10 to 9. So 10 is a face in the
- 25:50crowd. It came out in 1957. We had this movie called on number nine called Bob Roberts, which is
- 25:571992. I want to watch that now that you send me the trailer for it. It looks fast. And yeah, so I was
- 26:02actually hoping to watch the movie before this episode, but you actually cannot find it anywhere
- 26:08in a streaming in the United States. We could find it if we went to like a Zeea Records or something.
- 26:14Oh, on DVD or something. Yeah. And like we'd have to find a DVD player. Good will. Yeah.
- 26:20I own a VHS player. Oh my god. A VCR. Oh wow. Well, because I wanted to show Andrew my whole
- 26:26crew. I am serving Croad as energy. Yeah. We can't do it. I do like no. I do like no. I do like no.
- 26:37That's that's amazing. Yeah. But so this film is very known as the predictor of Donald Trump. And so
- 26:47if you just go on YouTube and look at Bob Roberts trailer, it was insane. He called it personality.
- 26:53Yeah. Yeah. The only thing that Donald Trump does not mirror this person on is attractiveness.
- 27:00Well, that yeah, that and he's not like a singer. Yeah. And that's the only thing. But it is really
- 27:06this guy who comes in. He's a like a nepo baby rich person who comes in like a country music singer.
- 27:16Yeah. Yeah. And just like in the trailer, it really lays out like everything. I was watching a clip
- 27:22from it and like he gets like almost assassinated. And I was like, wow. This is even more. No.
- 27:27This is even more spot on. Did you catch the young Jack Black? I didn't actually until you said it.
- 27:32Yeah. And he likes familiar. Yeah. I love Bob Roberts or something like. But yeah, it was really,
- 27:38really crazy to see. So there were some movies that were starting to make its way into the zeitgeist
- 27:45that were making fun of politicians. It's really calling attention to the craziness of politics
- 27:54with humor. And I think one of the best movies that I have seen that I really, really like that
- 28:00is looking backwards is the movie dick. And you would have seen it before, right? I've seen that movie.
- 28:07So I was on my computer and I was trying to see where I could stream dick again. And whenever I
- 28:17started to go type into my work computer dick into the search bar. And I just like looked and
- 28:22before I hit enter, I was like, that's a personal search. Like dick movie. Yeah. Wait, still not better.
- 28:28And so if you've never seen dick, it's with tears to and Michelle William. I've seen that I can picture
- 28:35the cover in my head no from blockbuster. Yes. Yes, right. And this is a movie that is kind of made
- 28:42for teenagers like it's silly. It's goofy. But I think it had a really profound effect on the adult
- 28:49who lived through the Nixon administration. Yeah. And kind of saw all that. I was watching it. And
- 28:56I was just thinking like, man, what we wouldn't do for Nixon now. Oh my god. You know, and now that I
- 29:01think about it, I think that maybe I we weren't alive during the Nixon administration. But that was
- 29:05probably the beginning of like the downfall of American politics. And then you get like Ronald Reagan
- 29:12in my opinion. That's the entrance of like Christian nationalism into the zeitgeist and like that
- 29:17mix of religion with politics. But yeah, I mean, this movie is stacked with like I mentioned Kirsten
- 29:24Dunn, special Williams. We have Dan Hadea, Will Ferrell and just so many famous. That's a given
- 29:30the world in it. And it is basically instead of, you know, the mysterious deep throat Kirsten Dunn's
- 29:39and Michelle Williams are 15 year old girls and they are deep throat in the movie. And it is so funny.
- 29:46Oh my god. It's hilarious. You know, of course, there is a lot of slide dick jokes with a lot of
- 29:52slide dick jokes. Yeah. When I first started going to ASU, Jessica and I were in journalism and we
- 29:58got putting a bunch of like 18 year olds in a room and trying to teach them about deep throat
- 30:04the entire time. We were just like, he he he like the entire room and the professor had to get up
- 30:10there and be like, stop laughing at deep throat. It's not that funny, which of course was the most
- 30:15fucking hilarious thing we never heard. Because it is funny. He's like your your dad and your stepmom.
- 30:21Like it's not getting deep 30. Orals.
- 30:23Jeep throat isn't funny. And it's too much oral sex.
- 30:27You can never have to see my Jorls X. Sorry. Yes. And just to kind of finish off these top 10 political
- 30:35movies. Oh, I want to talk about, I don't know what number this is in the list. So I want to talk
- 30:40about idiocracy. Oh, yes. Let's keep going. So we have Lincoln, which is obviously about Abraham Lincoln.
- 30:46And then number seven, we have idiocracy. And I want to kind of take you back to 1999.
- 30:52Oh, let me just I mean, how old was I? I was 10 years old.
- 30:57Or I guess yes. Did you see it when it first came out? Or when did you first watch the movie?
- 31:03What did you think when you first saw it? I see it as a 2006 movie. So it looks like the concept
- 31:09kind of went back. It felt like the early 2000s, but it wasn't released until 2006. Oh,
- 31:15interesting. Yeah. Exactly. So it was 1999. Yeah. So the film is released. So I watched it in high
- 31:22school. Okay. And at the time I thought no one could ever be this stupid. Yes. I remember watching
- 31:28this and be like, what a dumb movie. This could never happen. Exactly. And so now it's like cold
- 31:34following because it really is where we are today. It's got a lecture. Yes. Yes. So idiocracy
- 31:41stars Luke Wilson, my brood off, Dax Shepherd, Terry Cruz, just in long, I mean, another hilarious
- 31:49cast. So Luke Wilson plays, I don't know, a low level. Just a suit. He just a guy who travels to the
- 31:57future. Yes. He gets the hibernates or like gets cryo friends. Yeah. And wakes up and he's the smartest
- 32:04person alive. Yeah. And back in his time, he was just a dude. Yeah. It was like not very smart. But
- 32:10in the future, he becomes, you know, the smartest person ever. And really just using critical
- 32:15thinking skills. Yes. But everybody has lost that ability. Yes. Which is so funny to see a movie
- 32:22that was either conceived in 1999 and released in 2006. Who could know? There's no way to know.
- 32:29Not the Rolling Stones. Apparently. But yes. And the president is Terry Cruz. And he is just
- 32:35a personality. He's just this bombastic personality. He's a wrestler. He's a professional wrestler.
- 32:41He like, he doesn't really have any plans or policy. But he's got a big personality. So, yep.
- 32:47He gets elected president. Yeah. And when I want to say, you know, when we were kind of approaching
- 32:54to 2017 and it became really popular to be like, we are literally living in idiocracy. Yeah. And it
- 33:01is crazy to go back and watch to be like 10, 15 years later. Now it feels like this is our reality.
- 33:09It really does. Like God, I mean, when I just think about how we accepted a reality TV star to be our
- 33:17president. Yeah. Well, that's, that's what's interesting. You know, obviously the apprentice has come
- 33:24out as a reality show. And then recently we have had drama with the movie The Apprentice
- 33:32Sebastian. So, okay, I forgot that this was a thing. Yes. But I know Sebastian Stan is playing Trump,
- 33:38which is crazy because Sebastian Stan is a very good looking person. Yes. I digress. They make them look
- 33:44pretty, pretty dang close to orange. Yeah. Well, he wasn't so orange back then. Okay. It's
- 33:50this is yeah. So the movie The Apprentice with Sebastian Stan as a young Donald Trump came out
- 33:58and has really been mirrored in controversy ever since they released it at Cannes. And so the film
- 34:04already came out. Yes. So you can go see it now in theaters. I don't know if I want to. Yeah. Yeah.
- 34:09And so the film explores Donald Trump's early life and his early years in real estate under the
- 34:15mentorship of Roy Cone. So it really did run into a lot of struggles. So when it first came out at
- 34:23Cannes, Donald Trump and his team really threatened a lot of the distributors. Okay.
- 34:28So it doesn't paint him at a very pretty light. It doesn't paint him in a great light in his opinion.
- 34:35But then there are also critics who say it was too sympathetic and that they don't
- 34:39villainize him enough, which I think is just kind of a good representation of where we're at in
- 34:45the world. Like there's no ability to be in the middle and just look at someone, how they arrive
- 34:51where they are. I think, you know, you can look at Donald Trump and say like he's been evil from
- 34:56the beginning, but I think a lot of it is the human experience and you can go through that and
- 35:01look at that. Like he's a shit person. He's a terrible person. I mean, he's been like having,
- 35:05I mean, even when he was just a property manager or whatever, he had like racist policies for that.
- 35:10He's just a bad self-expression. And I think it kind of goes to the human experience of wanting to
- 35:16understand like a serial killer. I just agree with no notes. But you know, you want to understand
- 35:25and you want to explore how someone got there. But do we need to give them like a platform
- 35:29in a movie about themselves? Especially well, maybe not like, does it have to come out right now?
- 35:35When we're still in the mud with this guy where he might be the fucking president again.
- 35:40So I mean, maybe in 10 years from now, once he's long gone.
- 35:46So yeah, I would disagree on that note though, because I don't think it shows I'm going to
- 35:51goodbye it at all. But I also don't think it's like an overly cited opinion. So maybe it's just very
- 35:59neutral. I mean, not neutral because he's a bad person. Yeah, I mean, it's going to show
- 36:03through. So, you know, kind of going through the issues. So Trump labeled the film as pure fiction
- 36:09and threatened legal action against its creators. This led to distributors not wanting to pick up
- 36:14the film, which, you know, kind of given what's going on with the Washington Post right now.
- 36:19Yeah. With Jeff Bezos, you know, it's a very interesting argument that we have. And so it was well
- 36:26received at cons. A lot of people have said like, do should we release this in an election year?
- 36:31Ultimately, that is why Donald Trump wanted to stop it, so that I didn't come out. It wasn't his
- 36:37October surprise. But it's been really interesting. Not that the October surprise worked out.
- 36:41Yeah. Favorite last time. Yeah. And so, you know, I think it's been really interesting to watch
- 36:47the press of this movie. Yeah. And, you know, Sebastian Stan has been seen on like the red carpet of
- 36:53like, please just go see the movie in four or a judge opinion. Yeah. Which is crazy.
- 37:00It's like we're so divided on, you know, should this even come out where it's already been.
- 37:06Yeah. I think that art should always be, you know, presented in New Austin,
- 37:12yeah, thought through and maybe I'll give it a try once I'm further removed from the election.
- 37:18Like right now, I am just we're all so immersed in it. I had to watch stop watching handmaid's tale
- 37:24like years ago because it just got so like close to home and yeah, anxiety inducing. I would agree
- 37:31with that. And then I found out she was a Scientologist. I know. And I don't feel that.
- 37:35But maybe maybe in a couple years, I'll give it a whirl. Yeah. Exactly. It's a PTSD. And so, I know I'm
- 37:43taking like 17 years to go through this list, but six was wagged the dog in 1997. It has De Niro
- 37:49and Justin Hoffman for number five. This where you start to see a lot of these movies are very,
- 37:55very old. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Just rattles. Yeah. So five. Mr Smith goes to Washington. That's a 1939
- 38:03movie. We have the candidate in 1972. We have for a third Dr. Strangelove or how I learned how to stop
- 38:11bringing and love the bomb 1964 for number two in the loop 2009. And then for number one, which none of
- 38:20you will be surprised by this is all the president's band of 1976. Probably very good movies. Yes.
- 38:28I have seen all the president's band. I think it's a great movie. Yeah. It's kind of what they spoof
- 38:34Dick off of. Oh gosh. It's so it's the serious. Yeah. So it's the serious. Sometimes you need a
- 38:40serious Dick and a funny. Yeah. And so, you know, I think that it has just been such an interesting
- 38:49metamorphosis that we've gone through just through our lives, both in the media that gets created
- 38:54as well as the way that politics has changed. Yeah. Let's take a quick break. And then I want to talk
- 39:00about just politics as itself as entertainment. We've mentioned that election years, I mean,
- 39:12and I think this will probably be an overwhelming sentiment can be anxiety inducing and make you
- 39:17worried, especially if things are a tight race, right? And when you feel like so much is on the line,
- 39:23I feel like in recent years, politics has almost become itself entertainment. So I've heard some
- 39:31people say that they are voting for Donald Trump because he's quote, funny or entertaining, right?
- 39:37Which I think is I'm not racist. I just think he's funny. Literally. I think these are not qualities
- 39:43that I need in the president. I want somebody who's going to be frankly boring and steady. I don't
- 39:48think to be entertaining. And I don't know. I think and then people are kind of creating
- 39:54entertainment out of when Trump was in office. Oh, what's he going to do next? What's his next tweet
- 40:01going to be, right? And I mean, what do you think about just kind of like, I've mentioned
- 40:06cult of personality like people who watch politics as entertainment? I mean, on the more boring side,
- 40:14there's people who just enjoy watching C-SPAN. Yeah. Could be me. There's people who just enjoy listening
- 40:21to political talk radio and find it as entertainment. So yeah, I would probably say in 2016 to 2020,
- 40:31I was much more involved in watching the news, staying like watching it every day, making sure that
- 40:38I was following things on a daily basis. And I think that it is very easy to get sucked into it. Like
- 40:46yeah, a lot of people say the day that 24/7 or 24 hour news cycles were created was the day that,
- 40:53you know, journalism died, democracy died. Yeah. Because ultimately, it really is advantageous for
- 41:00these news networks to make you angry. Absolutely. I guess not even make you angry, but keep you hooked.
- 41:06That's how they make their money. They have advertising dollars. Unfortunately, the human experience
- 41:11does not stay around for good stories. What we are incentivized to do is get angry, to watch hate
- 41:18watch things, to get upset. Yeah. And that keeps us tuned to get riled up and tuned in. Exactly. And so,
- 41:25you know, I can look at my own personal like mental health in the times where I was watching the
- 41:31news every day. And I was, you know, waking up and listening to the daily every single day. And it
- 41:37just became this really negative cycle. And, you know, I'll look at my brother who is like a libertarian.
- 41:44And he would wake up every single day and, you know, watch Fox News. And he would watch like other
- 41:51channels as well. And we lived together at this time in 2020. And it was really insidious to watch like
- 42:00how that changed him, how that changed me, how that, you know, really went into it. And so, you know,
- 42:07I think it's a very human thing to get sucked into that like even just scrolling through
- 42:12TikTok right now. Like I have to be very intentional about like not watching these recaps or these
- 42:20incredibly like disturbing things. Yeah. I totally agree. And also once you get so consumed with
- 42:28these things, you stop paying attention to the really important things. So exactly. So when Trump says
- 42:35something that's actually really problematic and scary, like actually scary, like yeah,
- 42:42like he's he's threatening to like just deploy troops to like, I didn't exactly. And then when he
- 42:52says stuff like that, it gets buried with all the little silly shit he did. Like, oh, we went to
- 42:58McDonald's and serve fries. How that's so stupid. Exactly. He did his little stupid Trump dance,
- 43:04right? So we get so desensitized because like you said, it's 24/7 that it gets buried. And then you
- 43:10you forget there. It's easy to forget. Okay. Yeah. This man has said some really terrible racist
- 43:16things against black Americans against Latinos against like gay people and in Puerto Ricans,
- 43:22Haitians like because it's so bogged down and buried with just yeah. So I to me, it's like I listen to
- 43:31the news every day. Well, I get ready. My Google just played like the little recap. Yeah. Which is all I
- 43:37need. Just give me like, you know, here's your headlines for the day. Perfect. I know what I found that
- 43:44if I read it, it's much less jar like yeah, emotionally. Yeah. I can just, you know, have my one sense
- 43:53really activated there. And then I can internalize and feel the information. But yeah, I think it's just
- 44:00and you know, I always ask myself like, I'd look back to the world before 2016. And ask myself like,
- 44:09okay, is that attitude of making fun of Trump almost like early on in that election like with the
- 44:18news and all that like did that almost create him? I thought that too. Like if you look back up those
- 44:24SNL sketches that did not age well. I remember one where it was Hillary and Trump. And I mean, to be fair,
- 44:30SNL has been doing this for years. Yes. I mean, the like, Al Gore sketches from back in the day are
- 44:36hilarious. Yes. The Sarah Palin. Yes. And Will Farrell is George W. Bush hilarious. So good. So good.
- 44:44Now watch the strap. It's so funny. There was some sketch. I remember with Trump and Hillary
- 44:49debating and the commentators in the sketch were like, we might as well just say it. President Clinton,
- 44:56what do you think about it? Right. And now I think back on that and I get like itching. Like, oh my god,
- 45:01they chinkest us. I don't know. I think part of it was we didn't think that he had a chance at hell.
- 45:07Right. We give him so much attention. We give him so much attention to mock him. To mock him. And so
- 45:12that's what people started thinking, oh, this guy's funny. I remember people saying that, oh, he's
- 45:17funny. Oh, he's a businessman. What's the works that could happen? And turns out it's not funny.
- 45:23I don't think any of that was ever fucking funny. But like, I mean, whatever humor is subjective,
- 45:28I suppose. But we gave him a lot of platforms. And I know that like Jimmy Fallon, they, you know,
- 45:34he was on that show and he rubbed Trump's hair and kind of humanized him, right? And then they let
- 45:40Hillary host SNL. So Trump came and hosted SNL and did sketches with them. And there are a few
- 45:45cast members who were like, no, I'm not going to be on this episode of this guy is here. And I respect
- 45:49that so much. Right. But gave him equal platforms as Hillary Clinton. And he emerged as the guy with
- 45:57the great personality. Maybe he's a little rep around the edges, but he's funny. And he says what he
- 46:02means, which he does. And he's a lying ass. But whereas Hillary Clinton was kind of the standard
- 46:08cookie cutter politician or, you know, in a more misogynistic way, they were kind of putting her
- 46:13forces like the shrill, no fun woman. Well, that's how men of a certain age see women. Exactly.
- 46:21And now it's the total opposite. Kamala laughs too much. I'm sorry. So either we laugh too much or
- 46:28we're too shrill. Which one's it going to be by? The only acceptable version is a woman who's quiet.
- 46:34They're ultimately, you know. And yeah, I mean, I think it is such an interesting world that we live
- 46:41in now where we are not just seeing it on the news, but we're also seeing it in the algorithms.
- 46:47And there is proof that everything we see on social media is intentionally created or not created,
- 46:55but Sean get it to you to further deviate us. Oh, absolutely. And there are studies. It's not just
- 47:01from the news, but also on social media where, you know, you're starting to exist in a vacuum.
- 47:06And I do think that that is such a scary world that we live in. And I see it personally just on
- 47:13my algorithms or my social media where I go, oh, how could anybody ever think this way? And then
- 47:18I'm like, oh, no, I need to be intentional about consuming what is this other side seeing? Exactly.
- 47:25So that you can just kind of understand, like I think one of the things that politics has done to
- 47:30us is intentionally divide us 100% and it's getting worse and worse. That's such a good point. Like,
- 47:37I've said that to my husband before, like, I can't comprehend how anybody would think XYZ. And he goes,
- 47:44well, they think that about you too. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. And that's true.
- 47:47Yeah. And, you know, like I've lived through that time with my brother in 2020. And, you know, him and I
- 47:55went to all the same schools. We had the same upbringing. Obviously, he was a man or the woman,
- 48:00but we went to the same college, the same degree. And, you know, I really wanted to like take a step back
- 48:07and be like, how does he think this way? And, you know, we look at, there's always a stroke about
- 48:13the male loneliness epidemic, but they are being served like these crazy, like, misogynistic views,
- 48:22as well as like this looks-maxing thing and like everything in your life will be better.
- 48:27Alpha male. Everything in your life will be better if you have a six pack and you just can't believe in
- 48:32these ideals and go back to church. You are better than women. You need to assert your dominance over
- 48:38them and get a six pack and like get her back in the kitchen. Yeah. And it's not the systematic
- 48:44things that have been created by government and by this division. It's just we, you know,
- 48:50gave women too much responsibility or we got to liberal and Donald Trump's campaign and like,
- 48:56agenda absolutely. Like, that's what they stand for. Right. Yes. Like, and so then when you see like
- 49:03a politician on television who's getting these platforms, who is also preaching these things,
- 49:09and maybe some of these words don't come straight from his mouth, but like they're from his cabinet too,
- 49:13from the comedians he lets on stage with them. That was disgusting. And then-
- 49:18Like him in the roast of Tom Brady, that was like, oh my god, we had faith in you. And then, you know,
- 49:23the grabber by the pussy tape came out and we all thought that was going to be the end, but it
- 49:27absolutely wasn't. And all it did was in bold in this gigachad personality even more of, you know what,
- 49:33yeah, grabber by the pussy man. Yeah. It's almost like crazy to think back on like everything like
- 49:39the textbook for just 2016 to this time. Oh my god. When people, when kids, like, look,
- 49:47it'll learn about that someday they're going to be like, what were you guys thinking? What happened?
- 49:52Yeah. No, it is really crazy. At least the boy students, well, the girls won't be allowed to
- 49:56read anymore. Yeah. No, we're not manifesting that. We are sending really good love. Obviously,
- 50:01this episode is being recorded before the election results. So we are living in a world where,
- 50:07we know, hopefully we get we have rights. Everybody lives. Let us make this podcast moving forward.
- 50:13This might be the last episode of the party. Yeah. When it's speaking freely. No, no, no, no.
- 50:19Yeah, stop it. Stop it. Why are you being too negative? We don't love that.
- 50:23And that's what I mean, though, is like I had and I don't think you could do this right now because
- 50:29of what you're working on and who you're talking to every day. But like I had to stop watching the
- 50:34news every day and I had to like read it and change my algorithm because it was such a negative
- 50:41feedback loop. And you know, I tried to do it more with my social media, right? Because like you
- 50:45said, I work in politics. And so all day, all I'm thinking about is the election. All day, it's just,
- 50:52it's there and just like and it shouldn't be that way. So that is so scary that that's the world we
- 50:58live in. Yeah. I mean, it sucks. It sucks. It sucks you in when you're in that job, right? Like when
- 51:02you're going to an event that's probably all you can think about for days. Yeah. So my algorithm,
- 51:06right? It's a lot of dogs. Yes. And a lot of good Halloween costumes and Agatha all along,
- 51:13which is amazing. Yeah. I know. I've been seeing a lot of like fan. It's incredible. I'm like,
- 51:20do I watch it? You should absolutely watch it. I have to watch Juan David. No, you don't. I'll
- 51:24fill you in. Okay. Literally. You don't. Cool. It's very queer and very witchy. Yes. I think she's
- 51:30got a plaque for being the first woman in the Marvel Universe to show her butt. Yeah. I look good,
- 51:35but it's good. It's a good bum. Good bum. Good bum. Squirrel. Yep. I have to change the subject.
- 51:41You know, but all of my all of my scrolling right now is I try to keep it very light. Yeah.
- 51:46Because I need that little break or I'll play little games on my phone and turn off the brain for
- 51:51a little bit or watch scary movies. Anything to just, you know, we need to take care of ourselves in
- 51:57this time, I think. Yeah. And Sean and I obviously really believe in the Democratic Party right now
- 52:03is the best solution for women, but I hope, you know, if you aren't undecided voter, even a Republican
- 52:10who's listening to this blue and it's carried away by now. But you love that you know that we believe
- 52:17that we are so much closer than what separates us. Yeah. And ultimately, I think that, you know,
- 52:23we exist in a world right now that is intentionally trying to divide us. And I think just going back to
- 52:29remembering we're all struggling. The, yep. The problems that are being talked about in politics
- 52:36are really only applying to the upper elite or 1% of people in we're all struggling. You never
- 52:43know what the person next to you is struggling with or what they're experiencing or what their life
- 52:48experience is what they're actually what got them to this level. What their algorithm shows them.
- 52:52You never know what the person next to you is. Yeah. Looks like it's a river. I mean, we both
- 52:57have friends, friends who are Republicans. And like you said, we have a lot in common and we just
- 53:01we try to focus on that and like, you know, just live life the best you can and be a decent person.
- 53:07There you go. And rewatch parks and rec because that's the government at its post medical.
- 53:13And if you've never seen it, watch The Manchurian Candidate. Because that's my, I've never seen that.
- 53:18I know. I can't believe you'd never seen it. It's Denzel. It's so good. It's so good. It's, I, I can't even
- 53:26begin to explain. It's so conspiratorial. But it's, oh my god. It's really, really good. Okay, so I'm only
- 53:32watching anything scary up until Thursday, which is for future listeners. It's Halloween. It's going
- 53:39to be Halloween in two days for us on this side. So only scary movies, but then after that, maybe I'll
- 53:43maybe I'll get some political drama. It's a good, like, political thriller. Yeah. And psychological
- 53:49thriller. So it's, I love to be psychologically thrilled. I put it in the, like, kind of like Jacob's
- 53:55Ladder. You gotta watch it. Okay. Okay. Okay. Jacob's Ladder is known as one of the best psychological
- 54:07horrors of all time. Yeah. Like, I know Colin's up to put that. Yeah. It's really, really good. It's
- 54:14a ladder. Jacob's Ladder. Do you know what that is? It's like the twist. It's that thing you used to
- 54:20do when you were a kid. Yeah. With the string. Like, I'm saying this like, yeah, like kind of like that.
- 54:26Yeah. Okay. Yeah. So it's like, it's a what? It's a what? Yeah. I was straight. Yeah. What you should
- 54:32play with strings when I was a youth. I had to find the strings. Oh, yeah. I'm the strings in
- 54:37rocks and sticks. I'm only 35. I'm suffering. Yeah. Sorry, guys. Everybody like a older than me right now is like,
- 54:45shut up. Yeah. Yeah. So they're like, oh, I'd go, but I'd give anything to go back to them. And,
- 54:51and you know, so my, my pop is Manchurian Candidate. Your pop is Agatha All Along. I love it. It's incredible.
- 54:59It's on Disney+. Tomorrow is October 30th for us. And it's gonna have the last two episodes. But
- 55:07at that point, you can just stream the entire thing on Disney+ and highly recommend it. The Puses.
