- 0:00Eric: This podcast was created by fans or fans and is not affiliated with or sponsored by Hallmark or the Hallmark channel.
- 0:09Eric: This is Eric, this is Sydney and this is Hallmark Mysteries and more Well Come back.
- 0:25Eric: Hello Sydney.
- 0:28Sydney: Hello Eric, how are you?
- 0:32Eric: I am doing okay.
- 0:33Eric: You've had a very busy August, so it's now September it is.
- 0:41Sydney: I can't even believe that fall is upon us.
- 0:44Sydney: I'm like where did summer go?
- 0:48Eric: Well, here in Arizona, summer is still upon us, because we're going to be hitting 113 this weekend.
- 0:57Sydney: Oh my gosh, Dan, did you get any of that?
- 0:59Sydney: Did you get any of that hurricane?
- 1:02Eric: No, we did not.
- 1:03Eric: I think we had like it was like a little breezy and the temperature dropped like five degrees, but we didn't really.
- 1:13Eric: We had like a sprinkle, but no nothing.
- 1:16Eric: I think we had some lightning, like lightning and thunder, but at least where I was in here in Phoenix, Central Phoenix, we didn't really have anything.
- 1:25Sydney: Yeah, I think Vegas ended up getting like really pummelled with that, but I did have the craziest thing.
- 1:31Eric: So my daughter moved to Boston, yeah, and we went out to visit her this past weekend and we went, got on the plane, Everything like we drove to the airport, everything is fine, right.
- 1:42Eric: Wait, you know, it takes whatever Board the plane.
- 1:46Eric: We're sitting there waiting to take off and all of a sudden they go um, there's like a weather alert and we're going to be deboarding the plane because the runways are now closed and, like my wife was saying that she could feel the plane like rocking and stuff, I myself was watching a Hallmark movie that I had downloaded but in preparation for tonight.
- 2:14Eric: But so I've never had.
- 2:18Eric: I don't know if you ever have, but we had to actually de-board the plane and it's like I don't know half hour and then they say, okay, you can come board the plane again.
- 2:29Eric: So we're getting on the plane.
- 2:32Eric: As we're walking down the jetway, my son calls me who's dog sitting for us and saying oh my God, it's like the craziest storm.
- 2:40Eric: Furniture is blowing everywhere.
- 2:42Eric: The dogs are freaking out because of this lightning, the most powerful lightning I've ever had.
- 2:46Eric: I'm like James chill here at the airport.
- 2:50Eric: We're about to get back on the airport.
- 2:51Eric: It's only 15 minutes away from my house, Because I live pretty much central Phoenix.
- 2:56Sydney: Yeah.
- 2:58Eric: And all of a sudden they're like oh sorry, close the runway again, kick this off the plane.
- 3:03Eric: So we were kicked off twice and then that time we sat around for probably 40 minutes and then we get back on the plane and I think the pilot was just like hell bent.
- 3:15Eric: I'm taking off and because the lights apparently are, I think like orange is good and blue is bad, and so as soon as they're orange he was like gundit, like hit thing, and off we went.
- 3:29Eric: There's actually a pleasant flight and all that.
- 3:31Eric: But I've never had to de-board a plane before.
- 3:34Eric: Yeah, not once, but twice.
- 3:37Eric: My wife, who was afraid of flying, like absolutely terrified of flying.
- 3:41Eric: It's obviously not good for the nerves there either.
- 3:46Eric: So, but Boston was very lovely.
- 3:49Eric: We were very fortunate.
- 3:50Eric: It was like 78 degrees and sunny the entire time.
- 3:54Eric: We're there and to have four straight days of that Boston weather is kind of rare.
- 4:00Sydney: So, but, was there anything, though, like I'm sure you went to some really good food places because they have such good food back east we did.
- 4:12Eric: The main purpose of this is my daughter had just moved out and the main purpose of this was to fill her apartment with furniture and, being the youngster that she is, it was mostly a Kia type stuff.
- 4:28Eric: So we are sitting there.
- 4:29Eric: We went out shopping one day and then spent two days building things, so it's a little flash back down memory lane for me.
- 4:40Eric: I think, like I said, most young people start out with the IKEA type thing you know, furniture and which is fine and dandy but definitely requires some work to read those little Swedish lines and, using those Allen wrenches to you know, build everything in the.
- 4:57Eric: In the directions are always like Okay, do this thing.
- 5:01Eric: And then it's like all of a sudden they have a whole wall built basically by turning one screw.
- 5:08Eric: You're like wait, what happened?
- 5:08Eric: What am I missing here?
- 5:09Eric: And you know you finish it and there's like seven pieces still laying there and you're like what is going on?
- 5:19Eric: I hope this is stable, but it's pretty good.
- 5:22Eric: Yeah, turned out to be pretty cute stuff.
- 5:27Sydney: Okay, but did you have pizza or did you have?
- 5:28Eric: we didn't.
- 5:29Eric: I was, that's what I was trying to get pizza we did.
- 5:32Eric: I did not because I don't eat shellfish, but we did go to a couple places where my wife and daughter both got the New England clam chowder, which was fantastic and very different than the kind we get out here in the west, because it was super thick and we seem to get a lot of very potato we clam chowder, whereas there it's just loaded with the, with the clams, this so they were.
- 6:07Eric: They were like it was fantastic.
- 6:08Eric: I kept wanting to get pizza but we never did.
- 6:11Eric: We went to some lovely little bars there on the the I guess it's a bay where where they're at and sat and drank, overlooking the bay and the big yachts driving by on their way over heading over to Cape Cod.
- 6:29Eric: But Boston's a lovely, lovely town.
- 6:32Eric: I very much like it.
- 6:33Eric: Now we are also there over Labor Day, going back in January, maybe a little bit different.
- 6:41Sydney: April.
- 6:43Eric: Yes, my daughter being a native Arizona and who gets down to 45 degrees and she's complaining about how cold it is, so it will be interesting to see how her first real winter goes.
- 6:58Eric: So she went from Phoenix to Tucson for when she went to school and down there she was complaining that Tucson was too cold.
- 7:06Eric: You know two sons about 10 degrees cooler than Phoenix.
- 7:10Eric: Cool so they'd get like a little once every couple years, a little spattering of snow that would land and not stick around.
- 7:24Eric: But a little different, but it was lovely.
- 7:27Eric: How about you?
- 7:29Eric: Do you do anything fun for Labor Day Designing?
- 7:34Sydney: No, it's mostly just you know figuring out how stuff and you know papers that everyone needs last minute and you know nothing fun I do.
- 7:50Eric: Good, good.
- 7:53Eric: Well, today we are going to do something fun.
- 7:58Eric: We're going to discuss our three most favorite underrated hallmark mysteries.
- 8:07Eric: So we will not be talking mystery 101.
- 8:13Eric: We won't be talking crossword mysteries.
- 8:18Eric: Those are the big ones.
- 8:21Eric: We've signed, sealed, delivered.
- 8:24Eric: Whether that's a mystery or not, we still have yet to debate.
- 8:28Eric: But no, we're gonna be talking about the ones that not quite everyone has all seen.
- 8:34Eric: So I think it's fun.
- 8:38Eric: I think there's a little.
- 8:39Eric: You know people complain a lot about the lack of good mysteries.
- 8:42Eric: I very strongly disagree.
- 8:45Eric: I understand where people come from, where it's a shame some of the mysteries seem to have had a short shelf life.
- 8:54Eric: Some of these that we're gonna discuss, I think, are part of that.
- 8:58Eric: But all in all, I do think hallmark continues to crank out good mysteries and when I was going back looking at the history of them, I think people get this like is everyone does.
- 9:10Eric: When you look in the past, you make things seem better, because there are some mysteries that were definitely duds and people, I think, only remember the great ones and I go oh, hallmark only made great mysteries and now they make bad ones.
- 9:23Eric: No, they make some ones that are a little bit off, a little bit more nichey now, but they also make some great ones.
- 9:30Eric: So, you know, we just need hallmark to make, not do one and done.
- 9:35Eric: That's my only complaint right now.
- 9:37Eric: I wanna see some more, so all right.
- 9:42Eric: Well, since you've been gone, I'm gonna let you hop right back into it, and in no particular order.
- 9:48Eric: What is one of your favorite underrated hallmark mysteries?
- 9:55Sydney: Oh my gosh.
- 9:56Sydney: So I really kind of took this to heart, like these are like my underdogs, these are like my feel-good mysteries, like when I put them on, like I'm cozy and I'm like, oh, I don't care if anyone else likes them.
- 10:12Sydney: But so this is not a shocker for you.
- 10:17Sydney: I think an underrated mystery was the fixer upper mysteries, eric.
- 10:22Sydney: I mean, what more could you want A 90s pop icon who's also really good with a hammer?
- 10:31Sydney: I mean, she built a cabin for herself in Alaska.
- 10:36Sydney: No, I don't know if Joel really did that, but I know she's like living on the land sort of lady, so I wouldn't put a pastor, but anyways.
- 10:46Sydney: So Shannon Hughes owns a fixer upper business and she fixes up old houses around the area and you know, antics kind of ensue when this famous mystery writer comes to town named Mack, who is kind of interested in her and she's kind of interested in him, and that kind of develops through mysteries.
- 11:14Sydney: But it doesn't come to fruition, which was kind of a bummer to me.
- 11:17Sydney: But like the setting is beautiful, I found the stories interesting enough, you know.
- 11:25Sydney: But this is also like a mystery that I would enjoy, like crafting while I'm like watching it.
- 11:32Sydney: So it's not like, oh my God, did John Paul Claude Van Damme like just hacksaw somebody in half?
- 11:41Sydney: No, I mean, this is like this is easy street stuff, you know.
- 11:44Sydney: So I just really that one spoke to me.
- 11:50Sydney: I think it was the parts of it being like kind of that fixer upper thing which was actually really really in at the time.
- 11:57Sydney: You know, that was when, you know, magnolia and, yeah, chip and Joanna Gaines were all in with the fixer upper show and everyone was flipping houses and I thought, wow, they really did kind of strike on that hot topic With this mystery.
- 12:18Sydney: And I know it spoke to me.
- 12:21Eric: It was on my list too.
- 12:22Eric: Stop it.
- 12:23Eric: Yeah, we've talked.
- 12:25Eric: I love Jewel.
- 12:26Eric: Jewel's fantastic and I'll say one of the things why I like this is Jewel can act.
- 12:35Eric: Yeah, so it's not like there's a Hallmark movie out there back in the day and I don't remember what it's called, but it had Debbie Gibson.
- 12:42Eric: So you know, she's in the 80s.
- 12:45Eric: I kind of she's sort of, you know, going back before, and she could not act.
- 12:50Eric: Sorry, sorry, debbie Gibson, or she may be Deborah Gibson in that.
- 12:54Eric: I don't know if she's Debbie or Deborah, but but Jewel, she as Shannon Hughes.
- 12:58Eric: By the way, this is based on a book series.
- 13:01Eric: The fixer upper by what is her name?
- 13:05Eric: It is Kate Carlisle and in the book her name's Shannon Hammer instead of Hughes.
- 13:12Sydney: Oh my God, yeah, yeah.
- 13:15Eric: I was chuckling when you said how Jewel could use the hammer, because I'm like, yeah, wait, I say about that.
- 13:21Eric: But yeah, like I said, I just thought Jewel was fantastic in this.
- 13:29Eric: And then Colin Ferguson who played Mack the two of them, they, their dynamic was just fantastic.
- 13:38Sydney: And.
- 13:38Eric: I think that was the, the tension of we like each other but we're both are, you know, broken right now.
- 13:46Eric: So they in the first episode sort of agree Like they're going to be friends but they're not going to date.
- 13:53Eric: So they acknowledge, like you know, hey, you're hot, you're hot, but you know we're both not in a place.
- 13:58Eric: So they kind of acknowledged there.
- 14:00Eric: But then there's just that little tension that runs throughout at the entire time and I think both of them are just fantastic and they pair together so well.
- 14:11Eric: So I really really enjoyed just the two of them and, like you said, I had there, like I found them just fun mysteries.
- 14:17Eric: You know, were they as you said, they, they, they.
- 14:20Eric: They may not have been, you know, crossword mystery level, but they certainly were intriguing and you know, I didn't know who, who, who, who did it in most of them.
- 14:35Eric: So, yeah, I really liked it.
- 14:36Eric: I like.
- 14:37Sydney: Colin too.
- 14:38Eric: I wish they would have made more stuff with him.
- 14:41Sydney: I feel like his kind of like I don't know funny guy, but like like doesn't know the answer, I don't know how to explain him, but like I found it charming and like a departure from like the, the really charismatic swath, perfectly quaff Tom, our guy that we see in so many leading roles, or at least portrayed like that.
- 15:06Sydney: I find him refreshing.
- 15:07Sydney: But he, I mean, he's a good looking guy, right.
- 15:12Eric: He is, but he has like a quirkiness or about him.
- 15:15Sydney: And.
- 15:15Sydney: I liked, I liked his fun how they were both, you know sleuther's, they weren't the.
- 15:20Eric: You know the place, they had Tommy, you know who is the police officer and so but I just, I found it just fun.
- 15:28Eric: And then the very, very end, kind of like Crossword and speth one.
- 15:31Eric: It did end with you know Mack, right before they go to his book signing, saying you know what, shannon, I gotta say I kind of dig ya, and I know we said we weren't going to get involved, but I think I'm, I'm ready, I'm ready to go, I'm ready to go.
- 15:53Eric: And I know we said we weren't going to get involved, but I think I'm, I'm ready, I understand if you're not.
- 16:00Eric: And then she just plants the kiss on them and walks in, you know, then turns around.
- 16:02Eric: I thought it was just a great Way to sort of end it and it's kind of like we talked before With Crossword, like it does give some sort of sense of conclusion.
- 16:15Eric: I would definitely have liked to see more of this one and it's.
- 16:21Eric: I don't know why it's, I will say, and I looked up and, as far as I can tell, none of them.
- 16:30Eric: My three are officially canceled Now.
- 16:34Eric: That being said, I am now holding my breath that there is going to be another fixer upper.
- 16:39Eric: I'm not sure if it's going to be a fixer no-transcript.
- 16:46Eric: Like we said, they were just both very good actors, very good actors.
- 16:52Sydney: Yeah, did you know Joel was actually in a movie, like in the 90s?
- 16:57Eric: Oh no.
- 16:58Sydney: It was like I remember watching it because I thought Joel was so cool and I remember seeing the previews like I wanna see it, I wanna see it but it wasn't like age appropriate so I didn't get to see it.
- 17:07Sydney: But it was called like Ride With the Devil and I think Toby McGuire was in it and like some other really hot guy from the 90s that was really popular, like Skeet Ulrich or something.
- 17:21Sydney: I think that was his name and anyways it took place in like civil war time.
- 17:27Sydney: So I thought there is no one more perfect than Joel to be like some civil war, like lady out there trying to make her way.
- 17:37Sydney: I don't know, I need to watch it now.
- 17:42Eric: Yeah, I know.
- 17:42Eric: I'm intrigued too, by the way, why I told you who wrote the books that they were based off of.
- 17:52Eric: The actual teleplays were by Tina Booth, who wrote the Aurora Tea Garden.
- 17:58Eric: Oh, the Aurora Tea Garden, oh Movies.
- 18:03Eric: So she is obviously a rather accomplished mystery writer for Homeark.
- 18:08Eric: Yeah, and it's funny, because I don't like the Aurora Tea Garden, such as you.
- 18:13Sydney: Well, we know you don't like it for a certain reason, but I very much like this, so I will say it's probably not the writing.
- 18:20Eric: I don't know what else it could be, maybe that I don't know why I don't like Aurora Tea Garden.
- 18:23Eric: I don't know what it is Either.
- 18:24Sydney: Eric, what's your next?
- 18:26Sydney: What's your mystery?
- 18:28Eric: All right.
- 18:29Eric: So we both agreed on Fix Rapper.
- 18:31Eric: If it's out there, definitely find it, record it, watch it.
- 18:37Eric: It's on Homeark Movies now If you have the app.
- 18:40Eric: I highly suggest, by the way, getting the app.
- 18:43Eric: It's great because you do get to check out a lot of the mysteries whenever you want them.
- 18:48Eric: You feel, hey, I want to bin something that's maybe not on a lot.
- 18:52Eric: The Homeark has been doing a lot of the little weekend marathons of these, so my next one was ironically just on, I believe yesterday, if I'm not mistaken no excuse me, Sunday, I believe which is Darrow Darrow and Darrow Darrow, darrow, darrow.
- 19:15Eric: Harvey pronounced her name.
- 19:17Eric: I know she says it throughout the whole thing, I never remember but with Kimberly Williams-Paisley as Claire, tom Kavanaugh as Miles, wendy Malek as Joanna, lila Fitzgerald as Lou, the daughter who is in the third and final episode of she's Max Neese and Fix Her Upper Mysteries.
- 19:43Sydney: Yeah, I do recognize her from things.
- 19:46Eric: Yeah, she's been in several Homeark things, but in this one, kimberly Williams Paisley, who's Chloe.
- 19:57Eric: She runs a lawyer like a law firm that kind of specializes in helping the maybe underrepresented and doing good cases.
- 20:11Eric: She doesn't wanna work for corporate America, kind of those kind of cases.
- 20:16Eric: But Tom Kavanaugh is the district attorney.
- 20:19Eric: Who's opposed to her?
- 20:21Eric: Yet they have their little chemistry between the two of them.
- 20:24Eric: Tom Kavanaugh is or I could say he's the attorney, but then Wendy Malek is her mom, who is exactly the opposite of her.
- 20:34Eric: Who.
- 20:34Eric: Wendy Malek is just a fantastic actress who brings so much to this.
- 20:40Eric: One of the interesting things is the very first episode.
- 20:42Eric: There's four episodes total, but it is actually.
- 20:46Eric: It doesn't even have a murder in it.
- 20:47Eric: It's a donut shop guy who is accused of stealing.
- 20:52Eric: So that's kind of interesting.
- 20:56Eric: You know, a Homeark mystery that's not around a murder.
- 20:59Eric: But for me the reason why I really like this one is just the sambal cast of Kimmely Williams Paisley, tom Kavanaugh, wendy Malek.
- 21:11Eric: They're all just fantastic in this and the way they work off each other.
- 21:16Eric: There's some humor in it.
- 21:19Eric: There's the relationship between Claire and Miles.
- 21:25Eric: Even though they're on opposite sides the aisle, they're going against each other.
- 21:28Eric: They can sort of put that aside and they still have this like attraction that they feel each other, but they can never really get there, which is a little frustrating that they never get there.
- 21:42Eric: But oh well.
- 21:46Eric: But like I said, I just really liked this, mostly because I thought the cast and the funny thing is when I first watched it I didn't really want to see it because.
- 21:57Eric: But I thought you know, hey, I'm gonna watch all these mysteries.
- 21:59Eric: So I started doing it because I just wasn't a Kimmely Williams Paisley fan.
- 22:04Eric: I didn't really like her and other things.
- 22:07Eric: And then after I watched this Now I'll admit I don't necessarily like her in a lot of her other things still, but in this lover she is so, so fantastic.
- 22:17Eric: This I didn't like sister, sister over in the hallmark stuff, but I I'm very you know what you're saying.
- 22:24Sydney: I totally am right there with you on that.
- 22:27Sydney: Didn't like her and other stuff, but I love during this.
- 22:30Eric: Yeah, she's like I say, and it's just, I think like the mysteries in here are fun.
- 22:34Eric: They're, you know, being the lawyers, they.
- 22:38Eric: She kind of has a reason to be nosy, you know.
- 22:44Eric: So it's just good.
- 22:45Eric: It's just a good classic mystery and With that, with that cast, it's that's all it need you need.
- 22:52Eric: It's just a great cast with some good writing.
- 22:55Eric: So there you go, that's my, my second underrated.
- 22:59Sydney: Also like I mean Miles, can we just like?
- 23:03Sydney: He has this schoolboyish, preppy but nerdy style about him.
- 23:09Sydney: But I really enjoyed and I loved that he was always toting his man purse around.
- 23:15Eric: Yes.
- 23:15Eric: Like a little messenger man or something and she and she would pick on him about like that, great banter, great banter.
- 23:24Eric: Yeah so it Like at the beginning she's what's.
- 23:28Eric: You know what's different about you?
- 23:30Eric: Oh, I'm wearing glasses.
- 23:32Eric: I look smarter.
- 23:33Eric: Yeah, you're not.
- 23:33Eric: It's not working or something.
- 23:35Eric: So yeah it's just there.
- 23:38Eric: It's a great banter with it, with the two of them, and so fun, fun one.
- 23:43Eric: All right, what's your second?
- 23:45Eric: Oh?
- 23:47Sydney: my gosh.
- 23:47Sydney: So yes, another really feel-good one that I Watch is the garage sale mysteries.
- 23:59Eric: I Drive sale mysteries is underrated.
- 24:03Sydney: I, I don't know.
- 24:05Eric: I feel like, well, maybe, it is 18 of them, or something.
- 24:08Sydney: I feel like it's not given a lot of like attention and people are kind of like oh, because it's, you know, it's not really thought-provoking, but at the same time, area something bizarrely Comforting about the whole thing wait, I know what's comforting.
- 24:33Sydney: But I find like the whole aspect of the family being involved, like I don't you know, there isn't like a ton of hallmark movies where the family is constantly around, like they portray the family in every movie and it's like.
- 24:48Sydney: Anyways, I thought that was interesting and I really think it's interesting how the mysteries seem to kind of be tied to her rags to riches Like business, like it'll be like a mysterious antique or I like that.
- 25:04Sydney: I like that kind of Tie-in.
- 25:07Sydney: You know, it's kind of interesting to me and I like you know her dynamic with her best friend that she owns the place with.
- 25:14Eric: But I'm drawing a blank on her name because I know you'll remember like oh, but in like 1972 she starred in this movie.
- 25:26Sydney: I know I remember that her real name is Sarah strange, which I remember because I thought that was strange.
- 25:33Sydney: But and then of course, her hot, hot husband, steve Bossick.
- 25:40Sydney: I mean he has guns for days, that one where he helps his daughter with the building, like the house or whatever, for the sorority project or something.
- 25:56Sydney: I mean there was a lot of tool lifting it was.
- 26:00Sydney: It was extremely Interesting and I actually really in.
- 26:05Sydney: I really liked her Interaction with him.
- 26:08Sydney: Like I thought Laurie and Steve were actually pretty good together and I Don't know.
- 26:15Sydney: I just found it really comforting.
- 26:17Sydney: Like she'd be working on something in the middle of the night and she'd pop up out of bed and she'd be looking at something and or she'd be up later than the morning.
- 26:27Sydney: She's, you know, making breakfast.
- 26:29Sydney: There's like the little scenes of like the lazy household, ness or something, not lazy but like you know, household aspects Oddly comforting, like the like the stories the app tells you at night so you'll go to sleep.
- 26:44Sydney: It's like the sleep stories.
- 26:46Sydney: Like there's something weirdly comforting in that same vein about this mystery.
- 26:51Sydney: I don't know, I Just I just really like it though.
- 26:55Eric: Well, you know what, even though I was like teasing you about there being so many of them, I realize you're kind of right as far as being maybe, maybe not underrated, underrated, underappreciated.
- 27:07Eric: But as we talk to all you know these people who interact with us, no one ever is, you know, saying we need more garage sale mysteries, clamoring for it.
- 27:19Eric: It's not.
- 27:20Eric: We don't ever hear anyone saying it's my favorite mystery.
- 27:22Eric: It just seems like it's kind of background as far as I mean, you know, once again, for having so many of them, that's kind of interesting.
- 27:31Eric: So it isn't a way underrated because it isn't people's favorite.
- 27:37Eric: The other thing that always sticks out to me ever since we started talking about them is Her fashion in it and her style, and so, as I've watched them when it comes on, like I'm not going out of my way and watching them, but when they do come on I look at her, I'm always like, yeah, she, you know part of I don't know how much of it is Laurie Laughlin could be one of these people who just Words closed, fantastically.
- 28:06Sydney: But probably does.
- 28:08Eric: But also like yeah, her outfits are just, she's just greatly, greatly Wardrobe.
- 28:17Eric: So I hear you.
- 28:19Eric: Yeah plus there's Wasn't the daughter went on and she was in they that one Hallmark movie recently.
- 28:28Eric: Right the match.
- 28:29Eric: So yeah, but yeah.
- 28:39Sydney: I.
- 28:41Eric: Also, I cannot underestimate the Steve basic, the power of the gun, yeah so.
- 28:47Sydney: But he's like he's a cool guy, so I do not fault you for it.
- 28:53Sydney: All right, Eric.
- 28:59Sydney: What are you bringing to the table?
- 29:00Sydney: What is okay?
- 29:00Sydney: So my last one, and it's funny because it's.
- 29:06Eric: I consider this when I've had the conversation at the Mount Rushmore what's up there?
- 29:09Eric: Or is it just a little bit of a I don't know what's up there?
- 29:15Eric: Or the best mysteries of all time I this often is on there for me and it's flower shop mysteries shot up.
- 29:24Sydney: That's my last one.
- 29:26Eric: Okay, so we start the same and then the same, but flower shop, it's Just a great mystery.
- 29:32Eric: So in this one you have Brooke Shields who plays Abby.
- 29:37Eric: She used to be a high-powered lawyer who gives it up and is now Opens up a flower shop, with having her BFF Nikki helping her out.
- 29:50Eric: And then right around the corner is hunky.
- 29:54Eric: He was like an ex-military guy, right.
- 29:59Sydney: I thought he well, I thought he was a private eye.
- 30:03Eric: Oh, maybe, maybe that's what, but he was, whatever, but the bartender of Chicago, the Chicago bar Marco, played by I forget that guy's name.
- 30:15Eric: Do you remember what it is?
- 30:16Eric: Oh right, yeah, you know who he is.
- 30:21Eric: So, but, yes, brennan Elliott and I know Brennan Elliott's been in a ton of things.
- 30:27Eric: I know people love him and like you, obviously, yes, he's your favorite Hallmark actor.
- 30:32Eric: I think this is his best role by far.
- 30:35Eric: He is so good in this.
- 30:37Eric: But he with him, and Him and Abby are just sort of going around break, you know, solving these cases together and it's.
- 30:47Eric: I Really like this one because it's it's really light.
- 30:51Eric: They're they're still good mysteries, but it's light.
- 30:55Eric: There's a lot of humor in it.
- 30:57Eric: Yeah, especially Marco.
- 30:58Eric: He's so, you know, self depreciating, where he's always trying to kiss you know Abby, and Something comes up or she's like, oh, I'll write, you know, after this I'll go on a date with you, but we got to do this and it just never comes up, and so he's always just getting denied and Brennan Elliott just plays it masterfully.
- 31:19Eric: He is just fantastic With it.
- 31:22Eric: We taught when we talked to him.
- 31:23Eric: There is the scene when they're at the wedding and he's dancing with her and, yes, she's in her heels, so she's like six foot ten, you know dance.
- 31:31Eric: And no, no, an Amazon over him and he just, you know he totally works it, but I did not know this.
- 31:39Eric: But this is also based on a book series, so I looked it up and Not only are the the ones from from the movies good, but check out the names of them, of these slay it with flowers, a Rose from the dead, a sleeping with Animi I don't know how to pronounce that.
- 32:07Eric: Night of the living dandelion to catch a leaf nightshade on Elm Street, throw in the trowel a root awakening moss hysteria, like they should have made them just to keep these names going.
- 32:22Eric: The names are so darn good.
- 32:24Eric: And one of the other things I have to say is Brooke Shields is a fantastic comedic actress.
- 32:34Eric: She's just hilarious in this.
- 32:37Eric: Some of just her actions and her faces she makes she's just hilarious.
- 32:44Eric: And I loved the dynamic between her and Nikki.
- 32:46Eric: It's kind of we talk about in Curious Cater with Nikki and JC, how Goldie and Marla have it.
- 32:55Eric: I think these were the original of just having that quirky, two funny leads, with the sidekick just being totally quirky and not being the one who.
- 33:06Eric: A lot of the time the sidekick's the one who's like sort of keeping the person maybe on the straight and narrow or there's a juncture position, but between Nikki and Abby, like they're both going to jail for getting in trouble, just like Goldie and Marla, like there's no one who's keeping them out between the two of them.
- 33:26Eric: So I just loved that dynamic and I really hope Kate Drummond plays Nikki.
- 33:32Eric: I really hope we see her again in something because she is fantastic.
- 33:37Eric: So all right.
- 33:39Eric: So what was it that?
- 33:41Eric: Why did it make your list other than Brennan Elliott, who is your number one?
- 33:46Eric: Hotty homework, hotty.
- 33:50Sydney: You know, I mean I agree with everything you say, like you always hit the nail on the head, yeah.
- 34:00Eric: Oh, we're going back to fix her up for the three of us.
- 34:04Sydney: I'm not very good at this, okay.
- 34:05Sydney: So I just found the whole thing really interesting.
- 34:13Sydney: Like this retired lawyer decides to pivot and she's like now owns a flower shop and she's kind of bored with that.
- 34:25Sydney: So she's figuring out other ways to occupy her time while also running a floral shop, and the whole thing was just again.
- 34:38Sydney: It evokes like this cozy, like feeling to me, like I'm watching it and I'm enjoying it.
- 34:44Sydney: I'm enjoying the scenery.
- 34:46Sydney: I'm enjoying like she has the most beautiful house.
- 34:49Sydney: I'm enjoying, like, what they're talking about, like the neighborhood, the, you know whatever Marco is making over at the bar, like yes, that sounds delicious, I want that too, you know.
- 35:04Eric: The five olive martini.
- 35:06Sydney: Yeah, I love olives especially, right, and so I really just enjoy.
- 35:15Sydney: It's one of those mysteries where you just put it on and you're like, okay, I can tuck myself in and I'm like, very, I'm happy as a clam, Like this is how I want my evening to be.
- 35:28Sydney: And it's, the mysteries are like you said they're funny, they're interesting.
- 35:36Sydney: I mean, Bo Bridges is her dad.
- 35:40Sydney: That's crazy.
- 35:42Sydney: I mean, when he showed up and well, first off, I was still kind of like nude when this story came out.
- 35:51Sydney: I was like maybe three years in to watching Hallmark.
- 35:54Sydney: But I was kind of shocked to see Brooke Shields in a Hallmark.
- 36:00Sydney: But I was even more shocked to see Bo Bridges playing her dad.
- 36:03Sydney: I mean, I don't know, I kept thinking, wow, Hallmark is landing some really great actors and that just stuck out to me.
- 36:15Sydney: I mean the acting was really good and that's because they had really great actors.
- 36:20Eric: Yeah, I thought about it and, as I said, I don't think it is another one, like any of these are why I garage show, I think, is officially canceled because of Lori Loughlin and basically firing there.
- 36:35Eric: Now they could do a spin-off, like you had that great idea with her daughter and you could do a spin-off with that.
- 36:42Eric: But I was wondering, like you're just saying that, like could they get Brooke Shields to do this again?
- 36:52Eric: And then also they're also I don't know what, several years older, or Marco, because Brennan Elliott's, I think, like eight years younger than Brooke Shields, or 10 years.
- 37:03Eric: He's like significantly younger than Brooke Shields, so he obviously could still be an age but is and I hate to say is Brooke getting too old to be that little Snoopy or she, you know, I don't know to be that love interest, because at some point you're not like cutesy.
- 37:25Eric: I don't know, maybe I have to edit this out because that sounds bad.
- 37:29Sydney: Well, I would say that, like I just saw her on the TV, because that book of hers came out last year and she was promoting it everywhere and I think she looked exactly the same- oh, she looks fantastic.
- 37:41Sydney: So she could really pick up where she left off.
- 37:45Sydney: And I think no one would be the wiser, because also, she had a grown child.
- 37:50Sydney: You know she wasn't trying to pretend she was gonna have kids, or something.
- 37:56Sydney: She's getting married and she's gonna start a family, like most of these, you know, that has to be like the most painful thing for me.
- 38:04Sydney: When my husband comes in the room and I'm watching a hallmark and he's like and I won't say who, because this is very sad, but like he'll say that lady's on again and I'm supposed to believe that she's the same age as the other two and like they all went to college together or something.
- 38:22Sydney: No way, like she looks way older and she is, but I, you know, as a woman, I'm like, oh, that hurts.
- 38:32Sydney: But at the same time I think, well, they are kind of playing people a little too young than they should Like.
- 38:40Sydney: Why not play them age appropriately?
- 38:42Sydney: I'm fine with that.
- 38:44Eric: Yeah, I think the thing is you just can't have them being that like oh, bubbly, you know I haven't had love, kind of thing.
- 38:52Eric: But yeah, waiting, they never really had Marco and her weren't like that.
- 38:58Eric: They weren't the.
- 38:58Eric: You know the young love finding my high school sweetheart.
- 39:03Sydney: Right.
- 39:04Eric: They've lived life.
- 39:06Sydney: So you can definitely do it.
- 39:07Sydney: And they should do that more.
- 39:10Sydney: Like you know, if you because some of the characters like we've been watching now for over, we've been watching for 10 years, you know, almost 10 years maybe and hey, you do kind of reach a point where it's like, well, I think, why aren't we, why aren't we just making it an age appropriate storyline?
- 39:32Sydney: Or you're getting a younger actor, or is it like I don't know?
- 39:34Eric: Well, you know, I know we talk mysteries, but that was my one with that, the Brittany Bristow and Andrew Walker one Like his character.
- 39:44Eric: They had it written for somebody who was younger he was supposed to be 10 years out of college and I thought he paired up well with Brittany Bristow.
- 39:55Eric: I thought it was great.
- 39:56Eric: They just had the character written Like they should have not had him be this guy who's just struggling to build a career.
- 40:04Eric: They just tweak the script a little bit and just have him be successful and well into his career and there's nothing wrong with that.
- 40:13Eric: And the same thing, like we were saying for the mystery, you don't have to be the young and everything, especially in mysteries, they're not.
- 40:21Eric: It's not the same thing, because people are tuning in for the mystery and then the romance is the cherry on top.
- 40:29Eric: So it's not the little cute bubbly romance that you know the rom-coms are.
- 40:35Sydney: So I agree with you.
- 40:36Eric: They just haven't been.
- 40:38Eric: They live their life.
- 40:39Eric: It's awesome.
- 40:39Eric: We love it.
- 40:41Sydney: Love it.
- 40:43Eric: Okay, so interesting that we did not know what we were gonna have, what the other was gonna have, and we ended up with two of the same, that is shocking to me.
- 40:58Sydney: I mean the last one I don't find terribly shocking, but like the other one, I do.
- 41:06Eric: The flower shopper or the fixer upper.
- 41:08Sydney: Fixer upper.
- 41:09Eric: Oh no, fixer upper, it's a great one and I've all.
- 41:13Eric: I know you love, jewel.
- 41:14Eric: I've always been there right with you, jewel's fantastic.
- 41:18Sydney: I was listening to it.
- 41:19Eric: I had back in the 90s I had my crush on her.
- 41:21Eric: I thought it was.
- 41:23Eric: I thought she's great.
- 41:26Sydney: Yeah.
- 41:27Eric: So all right.
- 41:28Eric: So let's just move on a little bit as we wrap up and say we're about to go into the whole holiday movies.
- 41:39Eric: From what I'm gathering, they are going to have the full line of holiday movies, even with the strike going on, which is surprising.
- 41:49Eric: I guess they were able to get them filmed early enough or written and able to move on.
- 41:55Eric: I know Hallmark got some waivers because they're not part of that big studio thing.
- 42:02Eric: They're like I don't know if they're considered independent or what, but they were able to get waivers from SAG.
- 42:08Eric: So you know, awesome, great for us.
- 42:10Eric: But what we do have coming up starting later this month, is a full four weeks in a row of mysteries which I don't know we we haven't had that in years where they've done like maybe a back to back, but never back to back to back to back to back.
- 42:27Eric: So this is pretty exciting Starting out with and all I'm going to ask is, of the four, which one you're most looking forward to?
- 42:37Eric: So in September 22, we have haunted harmony mysteries, murdered, a G major, which this is the one where you have tomorrow Maori house, lee and the ghost in there, and then you have Mr Island with John Christian plumbers, one that he told us about way back when we first, when we first talked to him on September 29.
- 43:06Eric: And then we roll into beginning of October, which, like October, where is it?
- 43:14Eric: 7th, or something like that is.
- 43:17Eric: Is it now is October Six, which is the next?
- 43:27Eric: Hannah Swenson, the zest for death.
- 43:30Eric: And then after that you get the final.
- 43:34Eric: Not the final, but the next curious catered fate of ours on October 13.
- 43:39Eric: So, four weeks in a row, we have mysteries, two new ones and two continuations.
- 43:45Eric: So those four, what's the one you're most looking forward to?
- 43:50Sydney: Well, I think, to be honest, I'm really looking forward to these new ones.
- 43:55Sydney: I like the element of you know, a haunted kind of aspect, but I am honestly more excited for mystery.
- 44:12Eric: I think and I could be wrong, I have no idea I think that the the haunted ones going to maybe be a little bit more on the fun cookie side of mystery.
- 44:25Sydney: Yeah you know, I did a while since we've had you know the case is a mystery lane were a little cookie and like a really fun way, but like it also was a great story, so hopefully this is a good story.
- 44:38Eric: Daily detective was pretty, pretty high in the the going for the humor and that.
- 44:44Eric: But I say, yeah, definitely, cases was definitely a funny mystery.
- 44:52Sydney: Yeah.
- 44:53Eric: You are getting the other sister back in the upcoming and in the zest for death, so everyone wanted her back.
- 45:03Eric: Lisa Drupal yeah, her name is.
- 45:07Eric: She's coming back, so a lot of people are excited about that.
- 45:10Sydney: But I'm excited for that too.
- 45:12Sydney: I just don't like Hannah right now, you know you know they're going to resolve it.
- 45:19Sydney: I know.
- 45:21Eric: Or how great would it be if, like Mike, gets killed.
- 45:25Eric: I don't mean that like what I've met along the lines of the story, of the plot, not like I'm, I'm wanting this, whatever.
- 45:34Eric: But you know, she, she finally makes up her mind and, lo and behold, he gets like dies in her arms or something.
- 45:41Sydney: Or she finally makes up her mind and she's at the and she's walking down the aisle and then someone stands up in the crowd and shoots him, and then she runs for him and that's the end of it, right?
- 45:55Sydney: And so you're like oh my God, did he died?
- 46:00Eric: A nice cliffhanger.
- 46:02Sydney: And then they never come back with another.
- 46:07Eric: Exactly, I think.
- 46:09Eric: I think yeah, I'm with you.
- 46:09Eric: Mystery island.
- 46:10Eric: I think it's just, it has such a uniqueness to it and intrigue, you know right from when, when he first told us about it.
- 46:19Sydney: Yeah.
- 46:21Eric: I've thought that's been an exciting concept ever since, so I'm really excited to to see that one.
- 46:29Sydney: And I miss writing.
- 46:31Eric: And he's allowed to promote it too.
- 46:32Eric: So we get to talk to him again.
- 46:33Eric: So that's always good.
- 46:35Sydney: That is good.
- 46:37Eric: Okay, hi Sydney, this was fun.
- 46:40Eric: Yes, you have me inspired to maybe watch a garage store garage sale.
- 46:48Eric: I'm sure Gros sale mystery and while you're.
- 46:53Eric: I don't think I've gotten.
- 46:55Eric: I think I've gotten to like the first half.
- 46:59Eric: I don't know if I've ever seen the back half of them.
- 47:02Sydney: Oh, the back half.
- 47:03Sydney: She has really great style.
- 47:05Sydney: I think I've gotten to like the first half of them.
- 47:08Eric: I think I've gotten to like the first half of them.
- 47:12Sydney: I think I've gotten to like the first half of them.
- 47:14Sydney: All right, Is there one?
- 47:14Sydney: Is there one?
- 47:16Sydney: Is there one in particular that I should watch?
- 47:18Sydney: You know, I liked the one and I don't remember what the exact title is.
- 47:23Sydney: It's something funny, but it's it's got something to do with a night like a medieval suit, A coat of or something.
- 47:29Eric: It's kind of able to figure that out from the descriptions.
- 47:32Sydney: I'll watch that one and then you'll text me and be like this is rubbish.
- 47:38Eric: Yeah, I won't be that bad.
- 47:41Eric: I just my only thing with her is I just find it like a certain white privilege to her character.
- 47:48Sydney: Where?
- 47:49Sydney: But Trying to look that deep, that's I know that's me.
- 47:52Eric: She just can sort of walk through and this is blocked off and oh no, I get to walk in.
- 47:58Eric: So, whatever that's on me, I'm not sure.
- 48:03Eric: Well, I'm not sure.
- 48:04Eric: Well, it's great having you back.
- 48:06Eric: Like I say, we have a couple of weeks until the new ones come out, but we will be back.
- 48:13Eric: We've both had a very busy life last Last few weeks.
- 48:18Eric: So sorry we did miss our first Week last week, but hopefully everyone enjoyed this one of hearing Some of the mysteries that maybe they haven't seen, and we'll go out and see and enjoy, I think all all of them that we suggested are very enjoyable.
- 48:35Eric: All right, Sydney.
- 48:36Eric: Take care Until next time.
- 48:39Sydney: Until next time, bye, bye.
