- 1:56fill us. Holy Spirit well up.
- 1:58Holy Spirit guide us. We love you.
- 2:01In Jesus name we pray, Amen. Let's start in verse one.
- 2:11After two days was the feast of the Passover and of unleavened
- 2:17bread, and the chief priest and the scribes sought how they
- 2:24might take him by craft and put him to death.
- 2:29What's he talking about here? Well, if you've been following
- 2:33along for any amount of time, you're going to see that they
- 2:36had come together. All these different sects of
- 2:41religious thought processes had come together to try to take
- 2:47hold of the Son of God, Jesus Christ, and they were doing so
- 2:53out of envy. The Bible tells us very clearly
- 2:58that they had taken hold of Him because they were afraid of the
- 3:06people. So they had taken hold of Him by
- 3:08night, and they were coming together here trying to figure
- 3:13out a way to trap Him. And they could not trap Him in
- 3:17His words. So they were going to use one of
- 3:21His disciples. Let's see how this story ends.
- 3:24Verse 2. But they said not on the feast
- 3:28day, lest there be an uproar of the people.
- 3:32So they were crafty in their approach, and they were saying
- 3:38not during the feast. But God forced their hands.
- 3:43He is the all sufficient sacrifice.
- 3:45He was the Passover lamb. He is our all sufficient
- 3:51sacrifice, the Passover lamb. So here we can see God and His
- 3:57sovereignty is going to force them to do something that they
- 4:02were trying to avoid, which was doing it all during this
- 4:05Passover time. There would have been so many
- 4:10pilgrims that had come into Jerusalem at this time.
- 4:14And Jesus knew what He was doing.
- 4:17He knew that He had to celebrate with His disciples earlier than
- 4:23the rest of the Jews because He would be being sacrificed at the
- 4:27very time that in the temple the lambs were being sacrificed.
- 4:32And it all pointed to this grand plan of God.
- 4:36And God gets His way and He will get His way in your life as
- 4:40well. Friend, you know God is so
- 4:44incredibly good at what he does. He's so incredibly loving and He
- 4:49knows who belongs to him. And He's chasing you.
- 4:54He is right behind you. If you feel 1000 miles away from
- 4:59God, just turn around. He's right behind you, friends,
- 5:04He's pursuing you three. And being in Bethany, in the
- 5:09House of Simon the Leper, as he sat at me, there came a woman
- 5:14having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard, very
- 5:19precious. And she broke the box and poured
- 5:22it on his head. So here we know that this was
- 5:26Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus.
- 5:30We know that she actually believed the words of Christ.
- 5:35When Christ would go to his disciples and tell them all the
- 5:40horrible things that He must suffer at the hands of the
- 5:46leaders. She actually had locked in.
- 5:50She actually was listening. She actually believed Him.
- 5:54And here she is going to pour out her most precious ointment
- 6:02and oil and perfume upon His head.
- 6:06And this oil would have smelled what we know of today as baby
- 6:11powder. This spikenard is what Jesus
- 6:14went to the cross smelling like friends.
- 6:19What a beautiful picture of her love being displayed and poured
- 6:24out on Him. She did it because she knew that
- 6:28it His time was near four and there were some that had
- 6:33indignation within themselves and said, why was this waste of
- 6:38the ointment made? And we know that this was
- 6:40started by old Judas Iscariot, and we know that the disciples
- 6:46chimed in as well. He was the ringleader of this
- 6:52perdition, this waste, and he wasted his life.
- 6:56He poured his life out in the wrong way and she got it right
- 7:02here. And this is such a juxtaposition
- 7:06of the two points, these two pivotal points in the story of
- 7:11one who got it right in the waist and the other one who got
- 7:16it wrong in the waist. And we know that Mary was locked
- 7:21in and she loved her Lord and she loved him well all the way
- 7:26to the end. And we know that Judas could
- 7:30have turned it around, but he went and hung himself.
- 7:33And Jesus said it would have been better for him to never
- 7:37have been born, this waste, 5 For it might have been sold for
- 7:44more than 300 pence, and have been given to the poor.
- 7:49And they murmured against her. They murmured against her.
- 7:55This was Judas and his premeditated calculations and
- 8:01how he was looking at how much he could have pocketed from the
- 8:06cell of this bottle of ointment if it would have just been
- 8:10entrusted to him and given over to him and all the resources
- 8:15would have been given to him so that he could decide what to do.
- 8:19We know that he stuck his hand in the money bag.
- 8:22We know that Judas was a thief and we know that his heart was
- 8:27not changed by being in close proximity to Jesus.
- 8:32And it's no different in our day and our our friends.
- 8:34There are many who rub shoulders and rub up against the Holy
- 8:38Ghost and are not changed at all.
- 8:42They experience all the goodness of God, but their hearts are
- 8:46hardened and they do not actually peek and peer into the
- 8:50spiritual realm. They just want to stay outside
- 8:52the door. They just want to be part of the
- 8:55religious activities. They are intrigued by all of
- 8:59this religious activity, but they are not actually in the
- 9:06fold. They are not actually in with
- 9:09Jesus Christ. They're only in proximity.
- 9:12And that's what you see here with Judas.
- 9:14Judas knew enough to be saved, but he chose to go to hell.
- 9:20And there are many like that today in our day, in our hour.
- 9:24They only are curious about Christ.
- 9:28They do not actually know him. And they will stand there and
- 9:32they will say, For we cast out demons in your name, we perform
- 9:37miracles in your name, we prophesied in your name.
- 9:41And Christ will say, Depart from me, for I never knew you.
- 9:46What a waste. 6 And Jesus said, Let her alone.
- 9:53Why trouble you her She has wrought a good work on me. 7 For
- 10:00you have the poor with you always, and whensoever you will
- 10:06you may do them good, but me you have not always. 8 She has done
- 10:13what she could. She is come a forehand to anoint
- 10:20my body for the burying. 9 Truly I say unto you, wheresoever this
- 10:27gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this
- 10:30also that she has done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.
- 10:37Here Jesus waxes so eloquently. Here Jesus is telling the
- 10:42disciples, leave her alone. She has done a good thing.
- 10:46She has anointed me for burial. She knows that my time is near.
- 10:50She knows that I must go to the cross.
- 10:52She's actually been listening to my words.
- 10:55Praise God for Mary sitting at his feet while Martha was busy
- 11:00doing her busy body work. And we need the Martha's in this
- 11:03world. And praise God for the Martha's.
- 11:06But look how Mary got it right. Look how Mary knew that his time
- 11:11was at hand and Jesus here commends her and Jesus here
- 11:19hurts Judas's feelings. And this is perhaps why Judas
- 11:24left and went to go and try to figure out a price for Jesus
- 11:29head, the price of a slave. He sold them for 30 pieces of
- 11:32silver. How despicable. 10 And Judas
- 11:37Iscariot, one of the 12 went unto the chief priests to betray
- 11:41him unto them. 11 And when they heard it, they were glad and
- 11:46promised to give him money, and he saw how he might conveniently
- 11:51betray him. Here we can see old Judas,
- 11:56perhaps a little hurt by the whole scene of Jesus siding with
- 12:01Mary of Bethany as she poured out all that she could.
- 12:06And what a word for you and what a word for me to not be hurt, to
- 12:10not be offended. Blessed are those that are not
- 12:13offended by Christ. And whenever we see people who
- 12:18are pouring out all that they could, you know this is a word
- 12:25for you and for me, to not look at the amount, but to look at
- 12:31the heart. For God loves the cheerful
- 12:33giver. And she gave all that she could.
- 12:3712 In the first day of unleavened bread, when they
- 12:42killed the Passover, his disciples said unto him, Where
- 12:46will you that we go and prepare that you may eat the Passover?
- 12:5313 And he send forth two of his disciples, and said unto them,
- 12:58Go you into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a
- 13:03pitcher of water, Follow him. 14 And wheresoever he shall go in,
- 13:10say you to the Goodman of the house.
- 13:13The Master said, Where is the guest chamber, where I shall eat
- 13:18the Passover with my disciples? 15 And he will show you a large
- 13:23upper room, furnished and prepared.
- 13:27There make ready for us. 16 And his disciples went forth, and
- 13:34came into the city, and found as he had said unto them, and they
- 13:38made ready the Passover. So this is a, an amazing group
- 13:46of passages here you can see how Jesus has already prepared the
- 13:50hearts and minds of his disciples that he had, that he
- 13:54had in that city, the people who actually believed him, the
- 13:59people who had already prepared the place for him.
- 14:02And we need to prepare a place for him to come and dine and
- 14:05Sup. Open the door up to him and let
- 14:07him come in and dine and Sup with you friend.
- 14:11Look at how Jesus here. He shows us that He has
- 14:16preeminence. He shows us that He is
- 14:19sovereign. He shows us that He's already
- 14:22gone ahead of us to prepare a place for us.
- 14:25He shows us that He has dominion over everything, that everything
- 14:29in the earth is the Lord's. He shows us that if we do not
- 14:33give him due praise, the rocks will cry out.
- 14:36He shows us that He is the Godhead 3 and one, that He is
- 14:42all sufficient, that He is our Lord and our God.
- 14:45He shows us here that He is all powerful, and you can see the
- 14:52immediate obedience of the disciples going and doing what
- 14:57He has told Him, not questioning Him.
- 14:59You can see that this man who was carrying a water pitcher
- 15:04would have been a sight to see, as it is usually the women who
- 15:10are doing that work of carrying the water in pitchers.
- 15:14So this was a telltale sign that they were following the right
- 15:18one. Perhaps this was John Mark's
- 15:22house. Perhaps this was how he knew
- 15:28that he was to prepare it because Jesus had already gone
- 15:32and talked to him. There are many things that we
- 15:34could speculate, but we know that Jesus is Lord.
- 15:41And this made ready the Passover.
- 15:44There would have been salt water for the tears.
- 15:48There would have been bitter herbs for the bitter times that
- 15:51they spent in Egypt. There would have been this bread
- 15:56and there would have been this wine.
- 15:59But Jesus was the Lamb of God. Jesus was what they were to look
- 16:08at for the passing over of their sins.
- 16:12The atonement for their sins would have been Jesus in that
- 16:17upper room, friends. And he's going to expound upon
- 16:21them, and he's going to seal this new covenant with his own
- 16:24blood. 17 And in the evening he came with the 12:18 And as they
- 16:31sat and did eat, Jesus said, Truly I say unto you, One of you
- 16:36which eats with me shall betray me. 19 And they began to be
- 16:42sorrowful, and to say unto him, 1 by 1 Is it I?
- 16:47And another said, Is it I 20 And he answered and said unto them,
- 16:53It is one of the 12 that dips with me in the dish. 21 The Son
- 16:58of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him, but woe to that
- 17:02man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed.
- 17:06Good were it for that man if he had never been born.
- 17:13Jesus here makes it plain. Jesus here speaks to them like
- 17:17little children. He tells them, one of you will
- 17:20betray me. It's one who dips his hand with
- 17:23me in the bowl, and it would be better for him to have never
- 17:27been born. Jesus holds no punches.
- 17:31Jesus here is showing that even though God is going to use
- 17:37Judas, he doesn't excuse Judas. Judas was not a robot.
- 17:44Judas had free will. Judas could have chosen not to
- 17:50do this, but God already knew that he would. 22 And as they
- 17:57did eat, Jesus took bread and blessed and broke it, and gave
- 18:03to them, and said, take, eat, this is my body.
- 18:09So we know that this was done in remembrance.
- 18:13We are to do this in remembrance of Jesus Christ.
- 18:18There is no special power in it. It is just for us to call back
- 18:22to mind what happens whenever we eat this bread that is His body.
- 18:30We are to remember this moment, friends.
- 18:33It is to call us back, and it should be as common as the bread
- 18:37and the wine was of that day. It would be for us every single
- 18:43time we sit down to eat a meal, to remember Jesus, to remember
- 18:50the body broke into, and to remember His blood spilled out.
- 18:54It's an everyday occurrence, friends. 23 And he took the cup,
- 19:01and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all
- 19:04drank of it. 24 And he said unto them, This is my blood of the
- 19:10New Testament, which is shed for many.
- 19:15So we know that the bread was to symbolize the body of Christ,
- 19:20broken for us, beaten and broken, and he's predicting all
- 19:25of this before it even happens. And then we know that this wine
- 19:29is a symbol of His blood being poured out for us on Calvary,
- 19:36and we are too hearken back and we are to grab a hold of this
- 19:40moment and to bring it into our minds and have reverence for the
- 19:45Lord Almighty. And yes, we should do it every
- 19:49single day. And yes, there is a very special
- 19:53moment when we come together as a congregation to remember this
- 19:58day. Remember His body being broken
- 20:01and His blood being poured out for us for the remission of
- 20:05sins. And for many shed, for many, 25
- 20:12truly, I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of
- 20:16the vine until that day that I drink it new in the Kingdom of
- 20:20God. We know from Revelation 19 this
- 20:24marriage, this supper of the Lamb, we know that we can look
- 20:31forward to the time that we're all going to sit with him, and
- 20:37we should look forward to drinking of the fruit of the
- 20:42vine with Jesus Christ. 26 And when they had sung A hymn, they
- 20:52went out into the Mount of Olives.
- 20:57So we know that there was this Psalm 118 that was sung here by
- 21:04Jesus Christ. We know that singing brings him
- 21:07such great honour and praise and glory, and we should lift up our
- 21:13voices, even if it's a holy grunt.
- 21:15Sing unto the Lord, friends, for he loves to hear your voice.
- 21:20Lift up your voice to the Lord today. 27 And Jesus said unto
- 21:24them, all, You shall be offended because of me this night, For it
- 21:29is written, I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep shall be
- 21:33scattered. He predicts here what's about to
- 21:36happen when all of the disciples are scattered.
- 21:41And the Bible predicted it. Friends 28 But after that, I am
- 21:48risen, I will go before you into Galilee.
- 21:50They would have done well to remember these things when Jesus
- 21:54was in the tomb. They would have done well to
- 21:58remember that he was going to meet them, to go ahead of them
- 22:02into Galilee. They would have done well to
- 22:06study the Scriptures, to know that the Bible predicted that he
- 22:11would be struck in the sheep would be scattered.
- 22:14They would have done well not to be offended not to live in a
- 22:18fence. And we would do well as well to
- 22:21remember to not live in a fence, to not hold on to a fence, to
- 22:27break down that fence and to go through, and to not be offended
- 22:32by the Lord Jesus Christ. You remember when John said, are
- 22:36you the one, or should we wait on another?
- 22:39And Jesus said, Blessed are those who are not offended by
- 22:42me. Let's not be offended by the way
- 22:44that the Lord works. Friends. 29 But Peter said unto
- 22:50him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I 30 And
- 22:57Jesus said unto him, Truly I say unto you, at this day, even in
- 23:02this night, before the cop crows twice you shall deny me. 3 * 31
- 23:09But he spoke the more vehemently, If I should die with
- 23:14you, I will not deny you in any way.
- 23:17Likewise also said they all, they all are trying to have
- 23:23bravado in this moment. They're trying to tell the Son
- 23:27of God they have, yet they have not yet been indwelled by the
- 23:30Holy Spirit. Their eyes were still somewhat
- 23:34shrouded and blinded at who this rabbi was.
- 23:38They had seen performed so many miracles and Peter had rebuked
- 23:44Jesus trying to tell him that he wasn't going to allow him to be
- 23:48sacrificed. And then the sons of Zebedee had
- 23:53asked for special positions in his newly found Kingdom that
- 23:59they thought he was about to establish and usurp the Roman
- 24:03government and authority in that land.
- 24:06Look at how these disciples had such bravado and they said even
- 24:12if all fall away, we will not. And what does Christ say?
- 24:2032 And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane.
- 24:25And he said to his disciples, Sit you here while I shall pray.
- 24:31So this Gethsemane is the oil press.
- 24:34And Jesus was about to be pressed out for you and for me,
- 24:40which was going to produce the oil that we desperately need,
- 24:44the Holy Ghost, the Holy Spirit coming, the Helper. 33 And he
- 24:49took with him Peter and James and John and began to be sore
- 24:54amazed and to be very heavy. So here comes Jesus special
- 25:00forces, this Peter, James and John.
- 25:03Perhaps he knew that he had to keep them close because they
- 25:07were they had the propensity to get into trouble. 34 And he said
- 25:16unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death.
- 25:19Tear you here and watch. He tells us the same today.
- 25:24Watch. Therefore be ready, Make
- 25:27yourself ready. Our adversary is like a roaring
- 25:31lion. We need to put on the full armor
- 25:34of God today. We need to stand our ground and
- 25:37advance the Kingdom of God. No retreat, friends, watch and
- 25:41pray. He tells us the same. 35 And he
- 25:45went forward a little, and he fell on the ground and prayed
- 25:49that if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.
- 25:54This is not him being afraid of death.
- 25:58This is not him being afraid of torture.
- 26:01This is not him being afraid of embarrassment, this is Jesus not
- 26:07wanting the communion that he had shared with the Father since
- 26:11the beginning to be broken and, and God Almighty was about to
- 26:16pour all the wrath onto Jesus Christ.
- 26:25He was about to pour all the wrath of God onto Jesus for you
- 26:31and for me so that we could stand before God one day, holy
- 26:36and pure and clean and made right with him.
- 26:41And he's going to look upon you and say, well done, good and
- 26:44faithful servant, come in to the rest that I've prepared for you.
- 26:50And he's not going to see any of your sins.
- 26:52All your sins are cast as far as the east is from the West.
- 26:57And he's only going to see the blood of Christ covering you.
- 27:01Praise God for this moment. Praise God that Jesus had set
- 27:08his face like a Flint, and it pleased God to crush him.
- 27:13It pleased God to bruise him. It pleased God, and it is
- 27:18marvelous in our sight. 36 And he said, Alba, father, all
- 27:31things are possible for you. Take away this cup for me.
- 27:37Nevertheless, not what I will, but what you will.
- 27:43Here is a beautiful prayer of Jesus calling God daddy and he's
- 27:52crying out to him, saying, if there's any other way, but not
- 27:56my will, your will. And by the way, friends, when we
- 28:00pray, it is not a cop out to say not my will, but your will be
- 28:06done. Yes, we should take hold of
- 28:10things and claim them and we should believe in them, friends,
- 28:14But we need to ultimately know that God's will is much better
- 28:19than anything that we could ever ask for.
- 28:23And we need to get in tune with God, and we need to pray for his
- 28:26will to be done here on this earth just as it it is there in
- 28:31heaven. And when we start praying God's
- 28:34will, that's when we really start seeing things move,
- 28:37friends. We start seeing the atmosphere
- 28:40shift, and we start seeing our prayers answered because we're
- 28:44praying the will of God. 37 And he came and he found them
- 28:51sleeping and said unto Peter Simon, you sleep, could you not
- 28:57watch one hour? He asked you the same thing.
- 29:01Friends, this little 100 year that you get, it's such a blink
- 29:08of an eye, it's such a blip on the map, this little 100 year
- 29:13time frame that you get called life.
- 29:16It's like an hour unto God. And he says, pray with me.
- 29:21Could you not pray for one hour? Friends, he asked you the same
- 29:25thing. How many of us are prayerless?
- 29:29How many of us do not even believe that our prayers matter?
- 29:34How many of us wake up and start our day without getting face to
- 29:39face with God Almighty? And He asked you the same thing,
- 29:43friends, could you not pray with me for one hour?
- 29:49The disciples understood that the power that Jesus possessed
- 29:53was from His prayer life. Whenever they asked Him to teach
- 29:57us how to pray, they knew that all the power that He had was
- 30:02connected to His prayer life. They did not say teach us how to
- 30:06raise people from the dead, teach us how to multiply the
- 30:10fish and the loaves, teach us how to drive out the demons.
- 30:15What did they say teach us how to pray?
- 30:18They did not say teach us how to walk on water, erase people from
- 30:22the dead. It was just teach us how to pray
- 30:25because everything flows from our prayer life, friends.
- 30:30And he asked you today, could you not pray with me for one
- 30:32hour? 38 Watch you and pray, lest you
- 30:37enter into temptation. The Spirit truly is ready, but
- 30:41the flesh is weak. And he says the same thing to us
- 30:44today, friends, our flesh is weak.
- 30:48We battle that old man. We do the things that we don't
- 30:52want to do. And we should be spending more
- 30:57time in prayer so that we do not enter into temptation and hear
- 31:04Jesus calls Peter Simon. He'd already said that he was
- 31:10the rock and he was going to build his church on him in the
- 31:14gates of hell would not prevail. But here he says Simon.
- 31:20What an interesting thought, friends. 39 And again he went
- 31:24away and prayed and spoke the same words.
- 31:31Which words did he speak? He says, ABBA, Father, all
- 31:36things are possible unto you. Take away this cup from me.
- 31:40Nevertheless, not that I will, but what you will.
- 31:45So Jesus here he repeats the same phrase, the same prayer,
- 31:50and it's OK to be repetitive, friends, and to cry out unto God
- 31:58Almighty in your prayer life. Move the heart of God with your
- 32:04prayers and watch how things start to move. 40 And when he
- 32:10returned, he found them asleep again, for their eyes were
- 32:14heavy. Neither was they what to answer
- 32:19him. They did not know how to answer
- 32:21the Lord. I'm sure they looked dumbfounded
- 32:25as he found them sleeping again, their eyes were heavy.
- 32:28They were not praying, they were not watching, they were entering
- 32:32into temptation here, and the temptation was going to cause
- 32:36them to be scattered, and here all this bravado slips away. 41
- 32:44And he came the third time, and said unto them, Sleep on now,
- 32:51take your rest, it is enough. The hour has come.
- 32:57Behold, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of
- 33:01sinners. 42 Rise up, let us go. Lo, he that betrays me is a
- 33:08hand. He knows everything.
- 33:11He knew that Judas was right there.
- 33:14He knew that the disciples were about to scatter. 43 And
- 33:23immediately, while he yet spoke, came Judas, one of the 12 And
- 33:28with him a great multitude with swords and Staffs from the chief
- 33:35priests and the scribes and the elders, hear this little band,
- 33:39this little small army had come out as if they were trying to
- 33:45arrest some kind of revolutionary, somebody who was
- 33:49violent and who was to be feared.
- 33:56But Jesus was meek, Jesus was humble.
- 34:00Jesus was led to the slaughter, and he was silent before his
- 34:05shearers, friends. And Jesus is going to expound
- 34:11upon that. 44 And he that betrayed him had given them a
- 34:17token saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss that same as he take him
- 34:23and lead him away safely. Here Judas's betrayed him, and I
- 34:30don't think at this time Judas truly understood what it was
- 34:35that he was doing. He was soon going to find out as
- 34:39he had this revelation that he had betrayed innocent blood.
- 34:45Look here how he tells him to lead him away safely.
- 34:50He was greedy for the 30 pieces of silver, the price of a slave.
- 34:56He was hurt that Jesus had sided with Mary Bethany for the
- 35:02alabaster jar. And here he was acting on
- 35:06emotions. But everything was about to
- 35:08culminate, and everything was about to come to a head in his
- 35:12life, and he was going to get the 2020 vision that he had
- 35:16betrayed the Son of God. And then he went to hang
- 35:21himself. 45 And as soon as he was come, he went straight forth
- 35:28to him and said, Master, master, and kissed him.
- 35:32He does not call him Lord. He was not Judas's Lord, he was
- 35:37just a teacher who was able to get a mass of people together,
- 35:45and Judas saw that he could have made some money off of them. 46
- 35:51And they laid their hands on him and took him.
- 35:55Perhaps Jesus blended in with the rest of them, which was the
- 36:00need for this betrayal by kiss. What a wicked servant. 47 And
- 36:11one of them that stood by drew a sword and struck a servant of
- 36:15the high priest and cut off his ear.
- 36:17We know this to be Peter. Peter's bravado tries to come
- 36:22out. Here he told Jesus he wouldn't
- 36:26allow him to go to the cross, and here he's trying to protect
- 36:32his Lord. 48 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are you come
- 36:42out as against a thief with swords and with staves to take
- 36:46me? 49 I was daily with you in the
- 36:49temple teaching, and you took me not.
- 36:52But the Scriptures must be fulfilled so Jesus has a full
- 36:58understanding of what is happening and nothing is
- 37:01happening to him that he didn't already know about.
- 37:04He's already told the disciples many times that this event was
- 37:08about to happen, but somehow it takes them by surprise if the
- 37:13disciples here, they did not quite understand all of these
- 37:18events and they're going to try to tuck tail and save their own
- 37:21lives. And it's all fulfilling the
- 37:24Scriptures here. We know that Malchus's ear, the
- 37:27servant of the high priest, we know that his ear was put back
- 37:31on by Jesus after Peter struck it off.
- 37:34We know that these guards had fallen backwards when they came
- 37:38to take Jesus. And he says I am.
- 37:42They have to pick themselves up off the ground and to arrest
- 37:46him. Jesus is all authority and all
- 37:48power here, and it's all in a very meek fashion.
- 37:54It is restrained friends and the scriptures must be fulfilled and
- 38:02it's no different for our day and our our friends.
- 38:05There's a lot of scriptures that must be fulfilled and we rally
- 38:09and rail against these scriptures being fulfilled.
- 38:12And it's because we love our little cushy life and we don't
- 38:16want anything to come in and to oppose the way we think that
- 38:22this life should go. We like our cake and we want to
- 38:25eat it too. We don't really care about the
- 38:28future scriptures that need to be fulfilled.
- 38:32We like our get out of hell free ticket.
- 38:36We like the fact that we know where we're going to go when we
- 38:40die. But we don't actually want all
- 38:42of the things that the Bible tells us must needs be
- 38:46fulfilled. We don't actually want them to
- 38:49happen because we enjoy our little cushy life down here. 50
- 38:55And they all forsook him and fled.
- 38:57And if we're not careful, we would be no different.
- 39:01Yes, we have the helicopter view, the bird's eye view.
- 39:05We have the full counsel of God's word, and we can look down
- 39:08upon these disciples and say, Oh wow, if I was there, I would
- 39:12have never. But if we're not careful, we
- 39:17will be no different when persecution comes.
- 39:20We'll turn our backs on God whenever we have loved ones who
- 39:26are trapped in their sinful lifestyles.
- 39:31We'll side with our loved ones instead of with what the Word of
- 39:36God says. Friends, when Christianity is
- 39:40not popular, we'll side with the masses.
- 39:43Friends, if we're not careful, we would be no different than
- 39:47these disciples, and we would all flee away and will forsake
- 39:54Jesus and flee. 51 And there followed him, a certain young
- 40:00man having a linen cloth cast about his naked body, and the
- 40:04young man, the young man laid hold on him. 52 And he left the
- 40:09linen cloth and fled from them naked.
- 40:16Most scholars would agree that this is John Mark, the person
- 40:20who's offering this. Gospel here, being orated by
- 40:25Peter. There's some humiliation
- 40:30attached to this that he fled away naked.
- 40:32Perhaps they were having the Passover at John Mark's house,
- 40:38and perhaps whenever Judas came there first to try to arrest him
- 40:44with the guards, perhaps old John Mark ran ahead to try to
- 40:49tell Jesus what was happening. And perhaps here it all
- 40:53culminates and John Mark is giving a memoir of what
- 40:57happened. We can only speculate, friends.
- 41:0253 And they led Jesus away to the high priest and with him,
- 41:08where it assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the
- 41:11scribes. We're going to get to see an
- 41:13illegal mock trial. This was being held in the dead
- 41:18of night and it in their Jewish laws, it was never supposed to
- 41:23be so. They feared man more than they
- 41:26feared God, and it's pathetic. 54 And Peter followed him afar
- 41:32off, even into the place of the high priest, and he sat with the
- 41:36servants and warmed himself at the fire.
- 41:40We know that these servants are the same ones that are going to
- 41:42strike Jesus and spit upon him. And here Peter is making his
- 41:48abode with them. He's cohabiting with these
- 41:53wicked servants. We know that we're no different.
- 41:58We have ran away from God. We've only fought, followed him
- 42:02afar off. We're not actually locked in
- 42:05with him. We're not actually following
- 42:08after Him. So many of us have fallen away.
- 42:11And when the shepherd is struck, we all scatter. 55 And the chief
- 42:18priests and all the counsel's sought for witness against
- 42:21Jesus, to put him to death, and found none.
- 42:24They could not find any fault in him.
- 42:26He was guiltless, he was innocent, and none of their
- 42:32stories corroborated, none of them actually lined up.
- 42:36It was all a bunch of hoopla, and the high priest knew that he
- 42:40had no grounds to stand upon, and he had to get Jesus to speak
- 42:44something, because he saw it was got all going awash. 56 And many
- 42:51bore false witness against him, but their witnesses did not
- 42:55agree, 57. And there arose certain and bore
- 42:59witness against him, saying, 58 We heard him say, I will destroy
- 43:04this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I
- 43:08will build another made without hands.
- 43:12They're trying to make Jesus out to be some kind of terrorist
- 43:17who's going to destroy their buildings. 59 But neither so did
- 43:21their witnesses agree together. It was all a farce.
- 43:27It was all a bunch of ridiculous motions here in the dead of
- 43:33night, this illegal council. 56 And the high priest stood up in
- 43:40the midst and asked Jesus saying, answers you nothing.
- 43:45What is it which these witnesses against you?
- 43:4961 And he held his peace, and he answered nothing.
- 43:53Again the high priest asked him and said unto him, Are you the
- 43:58Christ, the Son of the blessed? That's the answer.
- 44:04That's the question that we all must answer, Friends.
- 44:08That's the answer that we must give.
- 44:10Friends. Is he the Son of God?
- 44:14Is he the Christ? We must answer.
- 44:31He asked him, Are you the Christ, the Son of the blessed?
- 44:3762 And Jesus said, I am, and you shall see the Son of man sitting
- 44:50on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
- 44:56Jesus here makes the grandest statement that he could have
- 45:01ever made. He calls himself I am.
- 45:07He is the great I am. He is God Incarnate.
- 45:15He is the Christ, the Son of the blessed.
- 45:19He is the only begotten. He is.
- 45:24And here this high priest would have understood that he is
- 45:30saying that he is God, He is, I am.
- 45:35And then if that's not enough, he shows him that they do not
- 45:40sit in judgment of him, but he sits in judgment of them.
- 45:46Jesus here in this moment is being meek, and he's being LED
- 45:50to the slaughter, and He silent before the shears.
- 45:53And he did it for you, and he did it for me.
- 45:55Friends, He had all authority and all power and could have
- 45:59called down legions just with the breath of his mouth.
- 46:02He could have annihilated everyone in the room and turned
- 46:06them into particles of dust. Friends, he could have opened
- 46:11the earth in this moment and swallowed everyone up in a
- 46:15moment. But he chose to go to the cross
- 46:20for you and for me. He chose to die a criminals
- 46:23death for you and for me friends.
- 46:26And we should give our lives to Him as He gave his life, as a
- 46:31ransom for many friends, for the remission of sins, friends, for
- 46:36the atonement, friends, so that we could stand before God
- 46:40Almighty, clean and clear and holy and pure one day, not
- 46:45because of anything that we have done, but because of this
- 46:48moment, because of Jesus Christ. All sufficient sacrifice.
- 46:55He calls himself I am. He says that He is the Christ,
- 47:02he is the Son of the blessed, and that everyone will see him
- 47:07coming in the clouds of heaven, sitting at the right hand of
- 47:11power. 63 Then the high priest ripped his clothes and said,
- 47:17What? Need we any further witnesses
- 47:21this big melodramatic moment that was intended to do exactly
- 47:29what it did, which was to create a buzz around all the people in
- 47:36the room to follow the lead of the high priest who's trying to
- 47:42make some kind of scene. But it doesn't change the fact
- 47:46that Jesus calls himself the great I Am, and that he was
- 47:53truly God Incarnate come to save the whole world.
- 48:01None of this ripping of the clothes, none of this false
- 48:05accusations changes anything. 64 You have heard the blasphemy.
- 48:11What do you think? And they all condemned him to be
- 48:15guilty of death. How pathetic.
- 48:17But it was prophesied that year by the high priest that Jesus
- 48:22would give his life for the ransom of many. 65 And some
- 48:28began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buff at
- 48:32him, and say unto him prophecy. And the servants did strike him
- 48:38with the palms of their hands. How despicable they're striking
- 48:43the face of God here. And we do the same today.
- 48:48We spit in God's face. We do not actually give God what
- 48:53he desires, which is our whole life, our whole self, all of our
- 48:58strength, and all of our mind. Friends, we need to give God our
- 49:04everything and be a living sacrifice unto Him today, and
- 49:08not spit in his face. 66 And this Peter was beneath in the
- 49:15palace, there comes one of the maids of the high priest, and
- 49:20when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him and
- 49:24said, And you also was with Jesus of Nazareth here.
- 49:32This was Peter's time to not allow his denial of the Lord
- 49:41Jesus Christ. This was the moment that he had
- 49:43to make a decision of he was going to deny Christ or not.
- 49:48And he let a little damsel, a little maid overpower him of all
- 49:55this bravado that he told the Lord he would have, that he
- 49:59would even go unto death. 68 And he But he denied, saying, I know
- 50:06not, neither understand I what you say.
- 50:11And he went out on the porch in the cock crew, 69 And a maid saw
- 50:19him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one
- 50:24of them. 70 And he denied it again.
- 50:28And a little after they that stood by said again to Peter,
- 50:33Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean, for and your
- 50:38speech agreeth there too. 71 But he began to curse and to swear,
- 50:46saying, I know not this man of whom you speak will end on. 72
- 50:54And the second time the cock crew.
- 50:56And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him.
- 51:00Before the cock crows twice, you shall deny me three times.
- 51:05And when he thought thereon, he wept.
- 51:08And we know from the completion of all the gospels, all put
- 51:14together and arranged with the timeline, we know that it was at
- 51:19this moment Jesus was let out. And he locked eyes with Peter.
- 51:23And Peter wept bitterly because he had denied Jesus three times.
- 51:35And Jesus predicted it all. He knew that this would happen.
- 51:41What a awesome, all inspiring, sobering chapter of the Bible
- 51:53shows our propensities, friends. It reveals the hearts of men.
- 51:59It shows us what we are capable of.
- 52:04And we should be like Mary and pour out everything we should
- 52:09see and take His words at face value and not try to make
- 52:15everything so allegorical and so parabolic, but just to read the
- 52:24words and to absorb the words and to believe the words and to
- 52:29not call any of it into question, friends, but believe
- 52:32on the full authority of God's Word.
- 52:38There's such a blessing in that. And I hope you've been blessed
- 52:42by this chapter. No, I sure have.
- 52:47I'm praying for every single one of you.
- 52:52I love you. So does God see you back here
- 52:56tomorrow. God bless you.
