  SPEAKER_05: Uh, we are going to recap the tech sports season of 2020, their basketball, baseball, and football, unfortunately.

  SPEAKER_05: Uh, but we we're gonna recap all those here at the end.

  SPEAKER_05: But we're gonna start off uh with some basketball stuff because uh we had some good news uh with us beating Incarnate Word yesterday.

  SPEAKER_05: Uh, and then we have a couple games to preview.

  SPEAKER_05: So tech basketball back up to number 13 in the AP poll.

  SPEAKER_05: Lucky number, yeah.

  SPEAKER_05: Lucky number 13 moved up two spots, I believe.

  SPEAKER_05: I think we were 15 from last week, but uh took care of business in Lubbock against Incarnate Word, the San Antonio school.

  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they're the Cardinals.

  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, the Cardinals 7951W in Lubbock.

  SPEAKER_05: Um, Kevin McCullough's back, and that's a good sign for tech man.

  SPEAKER_05: Uh, he was awesome in this game, really showed everything that he's good at.

  SPEAKER_05: It doesn't seem like that ankle is bothering him much.

  SPEAKER_05: So uh another good guy to get back before we get back to uh Big 12 play.

  SPEAKER_03: I think this was a a great game to knock out because it this game was actually what you wanted to see when we're playing this level of opponent because you know it's kind of taking us a while to start blowing guys out, especially in the first half.

  SPEAKER_03: You're like, oh, we should this shouldn't be that close against some of these lesser opponents, but it was over before the first half was even done, and that's how it should have been for a while.

  SPEAKER_03: So I mean I'm happy to see these guys finally turn it on.

  SPEAKER_03: Looks like we're finally getting our feet.

  SPEAKER_03: So I'm excited to see us, you know, never would lose a Big 12 game going forward here.

  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and having a full team, having all of your guys just adds a different element for for them mentally, you know, gets gets another guy.

  SPEAKER_05: Whether Kev stays off the bench or if he makes his way into the starting lineup, I'm sure we'll see a little bit of both coming up in the next couple games.

  SPEAKER_05: Uh, but yeah, I I guess the incarnate word, I uh, you know, it was 41 to 19, I think, at halftime.

  SPEAKER_05: So yeah, it was pretty much over at halftime.

  SPEAKER_05: Uh, still a little too passive sometimes for us, I think would be my main concern.

  SPEAKER_05: I mean, uh, we saw it Shannon had one of the breakaway, he had a breakaway dunk, and instead he was looking to pass.

  SPEAKER_05: And you know, Edwards was passing up shots, and it's just sometimes we just pass a little too much, and it's like, guys, you know, be sometimes we need that big Mac McClung energy for the other guys to just go to the hoop and and either get fouled or or shoot your shot.

  SPEAKER_05: But um, yeah, I I think I think playing a lesser opponent's hard to judge, really, though.

  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, and Garden Ward is is now one in four.

  SPEAKER_03: So they aren't exactly a great gauge, but I like that I like your point, man.

  SPEAKER_03: It's it's we're really looking for some more energy on offense.

  SPEAKER_03: We've been complaining about offense all season.

  SPEAKER_03: It's because defense there's it's just a well-oiled machine, but you know, some energy would do us really good on offense because talking, you know, basketball is such a game of uh runs.

  SPEAKER_03: So if you get some energy behind a run with some awesome dunks and uh you know a little bit of selfish play, then it's you can really get the ball rolling faster than we've seen.

  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt, no doubt.

  SPEAKER_05: So took care of business against incarnate word, but we're back to Big 12 starting on your birthday, January 2nd, where we play the Oklahoma State Cowboys at home in Lubbock.

  SPEAKER_05: Uh, this is a battle of NBA caliber talent on this Oklahoma State roster.

  SPEAKER_05: Obviously, Cade Cunningham is the guy to look at.

  SPEAKER_05: He's the guy that ESPN won't shut up about.

  SPEAKER_05: And granted, he deserves it because he's going to be a top three pick in the 2021 NBA draft.

  SPEAKER_05: He's a great player, 6'8, got great size, and we're gonna have to uh you know use all of our dudes to really just to slow him down a little bit.

  SPEAKER_05: Um, but this team, I they they've started off kind of disappointing in comments play 0 and 2, uh losing to a TCU team that is not very good, and losing to a very good UT team.

  SPEAKER_05: So uh Oklahoma State, they're they're hard to judge.

  SPEAKER_05: They rely on their talent a lot, I think, uh, instead of playing team ball, which can come back to bite you in the butt, but it'll also keep you in a lot of games just because you're so talented.

  SPEAKER_05: But uh yeah, pretty good game coming up, huh?

  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.

  SPEAKER_03: And the Oklahoma State game is always a big one for my family.

  SPEAKER_03: We we know a ton of pokes, as as you know, my family lives in Oklahoma, so would love to get this dub, you know, and uh put them to 0-3.

  SPEAKER_03: It would really hurt to to drop this game with the way their conference record looks right now.

  SPEAKER_03: I understand that it's it's they're just getting started, but TCU is no good.

  SPEAKER_03: And the teams that they've they've beaten in uh non-conference are no good either.

  SPEAKER_03: Uh, so it we need to get this one.

  SPEAKER_03: This is a must, especially at home.

  SPEAKER_03: So if we're gonna if we're gonna look forward to March Madness, it's it's time to really kind of dig in.

  SPEAKER_03: So I feel good about our chances, you know.

  SPEAKER_03: If they rely on star power, we will we rely on the team game.

  SPEAKER_03: So I think that's a great counter.

  SPEAKER_03: I yeah, maybe one guy can go off, but you can't beat our whole our whole roster of very talented dudes.

  SPEAKER_03: So I feel good about taking down the pokes in the Lubbock.

  SPEAKER_05: And another another uh aspect of Oklahoma State's game is they're very guard heavy.

  SPEAKER_05: Uh, they have uh guys like Avery Anderson and Isaac Likely that have been with the program now for two to three years, uh, solid guards out here.

  SPEAKER_05: Uh, but they're hit or miss.

  SPEAKER_05: You know, some games they'll have 25 and some games they'll have six.

  SPEAKER_05: And it's like, okay, what happened there?

  SPEAKER_05: But uh yeah, good good team overall.

  SPEAKER_05: Uh Mike Boyton is showing that he's a he's a very good coach for the uh Cowboys.

  SPEAKER_03: It's the Big 12, man.

  SPEAKER_03: No game is easy in the Big 12 basketball, so except maybe Kansas State.

  SPEAKER_03: But even Kansas State, Iowa State.

  SPEAKER_03: Both of them, yeah.

  SPEAKER_05: Like in tiers, I'm gonna I'm gonna put TCU like on their own little planet, and then uh just below them, I'm gonna put Iowa State and Kansas State because they do they do not look good to start the year.

  SPEAKER_03: But the rest is is a an L waiting for you.

  SPEAKER_03: So we get we gotta bring our game.

  SPEAKER_03: This is not this it's not easy, and this is Oklahoma State's in the in the meat of the conference, you know.

  SPEAKER_03: It's it's they're not bad, they're not bad, but they're not they're not super awesome either, but they're still a solid team.

  SPEAKER_05: I I what I really want to see out of this game is how we finish because against OU and against Kansas, we did not finish well.

  SPEAKER_05: Uh, and I I really want to see us.

  SPEAKER_05: I'm sure it's gonna be a tight game throughout with Oklahoma State.

  SPEAKER_05: So I want us to, you know, get that momentum and get it going the last 10 minutes of the game and really take over and and finish off.

  SPEAKER_05: But uh Kansas State is our next game coming up, and uh Kansas State's not very good.

  SPEAKER_05: They are five and five, one and one in conference.

  SPEAKER_05: They have a conference win over Iowa State, who again is not very good.

  SPEAKER_05: Uh but they had some uh had some tough games early on in the year, lost to Fort Hayes State, a division two program.

  SPEAKER_05: And when I say lost, they lost like by 12.

  SPEAKER_05: Like it was they got outplayed in every aspect of that Fort Hayes State game.

  SPEAKER_03: They lost 68 to 81.

  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that was bad to a what D2 team?

  SPEAKER_03: D D2, yeah.

  SPEAKER_03: And it an in-state team, too.

  SPEAKER_03: Like it's a Kansas school, and they lost to a D2 Kansas school.

  SPEAKER_03: Ouch!

  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, tough scene for K-State.

  SPEAKER_05: They they have tight wins, uh, like two, three points against Nebraska, Omaha, uh, University of Missouri, Kansas City, and Milwaukee.

  SPEAKER_05: So three, I like uh not a good start for K-State.

  SPEAKER_05: Um, and we should we should take care of business against them.

  SPEAKER_05: They're very guard heavy, they like to play fast, and that's usually when you see teams playing fast, it means they're usually just relying on trying to catch a team off guard.

  SPEAKER_05: So our defense will take care of that.

  SPEAKER_05: I I don't see any issues with K-State.

  SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, uh absolutely, but I don't want this to be a trap game either.

  SPEAKER_03: So it's it's there, there's it's still, I mean, we just said they're in the bottom of the tier, but it's it's uh you still got to come to play, you know.

  SPEAKER_03: I I don't want to come out sleeping, uh, but I obviously I don't think that's gonna be an issue with coach Coach Beard.

  SPEAKER_05: And that game is also in Lubbock, so we have two straight home games uh coming up here, and then we play Iowa State, I think, next.

  SPEAKER_05: So three games that are very winnable for tech, and then it kind of goes into the gauntlet right after that.

  SPEAKER_05: My uh my mom surprised me and my dad and Tristan for Christmas with some tickets gonna be in the uh in the cement uh flan that is the Frank Irwin Center.

  SPEAKER_05: Um, and it's uh it's it looks a whole lot better than it does on the outside.

  SPEAKER_03: No, I you know, with Thanksgiving, it was always on Thanksgiving break, and you know and I either being like Oklahoma or Houston or something, so I could never make it.

  SPEAKER_05: Well, you know, hopefully we roll into Austin and get another dub, but that we will talk about that more on next week's pod.

  SPEAKER_05: And it it was tough, it's tough covering 2020 because obviously, with the COVID hit in March, it canceled all our two of our big sports uh for the season.

  SPEAKER_05: But baseball, we were starting off really good too.

  SPEAKER_05: I mean, 16 and 3 until the season shut down.

  SPEAKER_05: Uh, we didn't even get into conference play yet.

  SPEAKER_05: And you know, we we had a really good team.

  SPEAKER_05: A lot of people a lot of people were were betting on tech to make it uh to another trip to the college world series.

  SPEAKER_03: For sure, man.

  SPEAKER_03: I I'll go ahead and just straight up say it was an A.

  SPEAKER_03: You're grading that as an A.

  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's an incomplete work, but with the way that team was looking, people were thinking that that that might have been like our best team yet.

  SPEAKER_03: So it's it's really frustrating because you know, we could have added another yet another baseball trope Big 12 trophy to our to our case, but uh obviously, you know, with well wit down, it's it's unfortunate that we couldn't finish, and it would would have been awesome to see us go to Omaha again because I think we're gonna win a baseball natty before anything else because I think Tim Tadlock is just almost there.

  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, for the first time of all the college teams that haven't won yet, you know, for the first time, I'd bet I'd bet Tech is gonna get one here pretty soon.

  SPEAKER_05: We lost to Mississippi State twice, so that's really what the minus is for, but it's it's hard to grade.

  SPEAKER_05: I mean, we had a great record, and we were gonna we were gonna roll into conference play, but unfortunately, COVID hit, and uh we won't be able to see that.

  SPEAKER_05: So uh we should mention that Clayton Beater and Bryce Bonin were two of our players that got drafted into the 2020 MLB draft.

  SPEAKER_05: Uh, and then Brian Klein and John McMillan also signed with teams.

  SPEAKER_05: Um, and so those are those are some key pieces from past teams that uh are gonna be gone and not on this 2021 team.

  SPEAKER_05: So that's kind of that's a loss on all aspects, but um, you know, good for those guys.

  SPEAKER_05: Hopefully they they find their place in the MLB.

  SPEAKER_03: So and I I'm not worried about the talent on that team, and I think this is the year where uh our high school alma mater, we have the player coming in too from Simpson Valley.

  SPEAKER_05: I think I think we had the number one ranked uh JUCO class as well.

  SPEAKER_05: Let's let's hope everything goes smooth with 2021 and get baseball rolling again.

  SPEAKER_05: And we're gonna start off with last year's team, obviously the 2019-2020 Red Raiders, which uh mildly disappointing considering we started the season ranked 13 in preseason and ended unranked.

  SPEAKER_05: Uh kind of, you know, we just we just couldn't get our team together.

  SPEAKER_05: And I think a lot of factors went into that with you know, guys like Tyreek Smith, who's playing on this year's team.

  SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, he got hurt and then ended up redshirting and couldn't play at all last year.

  SPEAKER_05: And that's a big guy that we could have had on our roster.
• 14:58
  SPEAKER_05: Also, we have to mention Joel Intabway, who transferred thinking he was gonna get his waiver to play last year, but didn't end up getting that.

  SPEAKER_05: So uh a lot of things didn't go our way in uh 2019-2020 for uh basketball for sure, man.

  SPEAKER_03: And uh so was that the first year where Chris Beard had like some true star power on the roster, too?

  SPEAKER_05: Like I mean, in terms of like recruits, I guess.

  SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, Jamaias Ramsey was the highest rated recruit that we ever had before or until namari got here.

  SPEAKER_05: But uh yeah, I mean we had we had some good players.

  SPEAKER_05: We had Terrence Shannon was a highly recruited player, but again, freshman, you know, we had we had a lot of guys leave from that from that final four team, you know.

  SPEAKER_05: When you have four of your five starters leave plus Brandon Francis, it's it's tough to reload from that, right?

  SPEAKER_03: And I I just uh I don't know, was it you think maybe there was like a shift that Chris Beard had to make?

  SPEAKER_03: I mean, whenever you whenever you're whenever you have a recruiting class like that, obviously you're expecting big things, which it turned into the disappointing season.

  SPEAKER_03: But do you think there's perhaps a coaching adjustment that you have to make for those kinds of players?

  SPEAKER_03: Do you think the egos and personalities are a little more to deal with than say a three-star guy?

  SPEAKER_03: Do you think that's anything to do with, or do you think I'm just pulling stuff out of the air?

  SPEAKER_05: I mean, it just it just depends because I think a guy like Jamias, when you're talking about him, he was he was great, he's a great player.

  SPEAKER_05: He got drafted by the Kings, he's playing in the NBA now, but he's a guy that's a little selfish at times, I think.

  SPEAKER_05: He's it, you know, when you're one of these highly touted recruits and you're you know you're probably gonna go to the NBA, be a one and done, it's like, okay, I gotta get mine, but also, you know, I wanna I want to learn, I want to help the team win, but I also need to get mine.

  SPEAKER_05: And so when you get three stars and you get guys like Jared Culver, who wasn't a highly recruited guy coming in, learns to play with the team and then thrives off of that.
