- 0:47Attached to this episode and if you love this
- 0:49episode, please leave me a review All right,
- 0:54y 'all it's time for our weekly catch -up Honestly,
- 0:57I didn't have a lot happen this week I took off
- 1:01Monday and picked up Wednesday instead at the
- 1:03salon because one of my really good friends came
- 1:06into town her name is Caitlin We used to actually
- 1:10live together. We lived together for two maybe
- 1:13three years. I don't remember Which is terrible.
- 1:17And we had, in my opinion, the best time ever.
- 1:19She brought her dog. We went down to Carolina
- 1:22Beach and got Brits donuts. If you know, you
- 1:25know, they are the best donuts in all of North
- 1:28Carolina. I swear. And then we went over to Freeman
- 1:31Park, Freeman Park, which is one of the beaches
- 1:34you can drive on. But you can also bring your
- 1:37dogs any time of year. So we brought her puppy.
- 1:42That's not really a puppy anymore. And then we
- 1:44got dinner with my mom and it was glorious. We
- 1:46had the best time. The next day I took her to
- 1:48one of my favorite coffee shops in downtown Wilmington
- 1:51and the roaster for the coffee shop is actually
- 1:54Savannah based roaster, which she loved because
- 1:57she's from Savannah. And then we hung out by
- 1:59the pool, did some shopping, and she went home.
- 2:01It was very relaxing. But outside of that, I
- 2:03haven't been up too much. Really, we did a worship
- 2:07night in downtown Wilmington Wednesday night.
- 2:11and did a small group being Tuesday night. Outside
- 2:14of that, I would say my life's been boring. I've
- 2:16been focusing on deep cleaning and just, yeah.
- 2:19And that's all I've, I'm boring this week. All
- 2:22I've focused on is deep cleaning. Oh, you know
- 2:24what? I know I told you all how. I bought my
- 2:26ticket for Iceland and booked all the Airbnbs
- 2:29and the hotels, well. the last airbnb i booked
- 2:33cancelled so i booked another one and they declined
- 2:36and i booked another one and they declined and
- 2:38you might think that means there's something
- 2:39wrong with me except for all the reviews on me
- 2:42on airbnb are fantastic reviews so i don't know
- 2:46if there's just an event happening in that area
- 2:48and people want to jack up their prices or what
- 2:50but i ended up booking just a hotel you know
- 2:52easy peasy lemon squeezy so that's what we're
- 2:54doing is we're staying in a hotel and the stress
- 2:57is now off of my shoulders Alright, now that
- 2:59you're caught up on what's going on in my life,
- 3:02let's dive into today's episode. Today we're
- 3:10going to be talking about Jacob. So I know we
- 3:14talked about Abraham and then we talked about
- 3:16Isaac, so we're gonna jump back in kind of where
- 3:19we left off with Isaac and run into Jacob's story.
- 3:23Sound good? Awesome. So, Isaac was 60 when Rebecca
- 3:27gave birth to Jacob and Esau. While Rebecca was
- 3:30pregnant with the boys, there was a struggle
- 3:33within her womb and she spoke with the Lord and
- 3:35asked, why me? I'm sure her why me question had
- 3:38a lot of thoughts and emotions behind it. And
- 3:41I'm sure some of us can relate. She can't get
- 3:44pregnant. She probably sees everyone else around
- 3:46her getting pregnant and having babies and she
- 3:49feels alone. Then when she finally does get pregnant,
- 3:52it's a hard pregnancy. The baby is struggling,
- 3:55tossing and turning, probably causing her pain,
- 3:58and she's probably worried about that baby's
- 4:00health and her own. So she goes to God and says
- 4:03what we have all said at some point in our lives,
- 4:06why me? The Lord tells her that there isn't just
- 4:10one baby in her womb growing, but two, that they
- 4:13will become two nations that are divided and
- 4:15one will serve the other. Jacob, whose name means
- 4:19takes by the heel or he cheats. is the younger
- 4:22of the twins and came out holding his brother's
- 4:25heel. He is described as a quiet man dwelling
- 4:28in tents and loved by his mother. His brother
- 4:31Esau is a man's man, hairy, hunts, and a man
- 4:35of the earth type of guy and loved by his father.
- 4:39Esau had the birthright because he was technically
- 4:41born first. Now most of us know their story.
- 4:45Esau comes home from hunting, but he hadn't killed
- 4:48anything. He finds Jacob cooking food, and asks
- 4:51for something to eat, but Jacob tells Esau, if
- 4:53he wants some, then he'll have to sell his birthright
- 4:56to Jacob. The Bible doesn't tell us how long
- 4:59Esau had been hunting. It could have been an
- 5:02hour, a few days, weeks, whatever, but all we
- 5:05know is he came home so hungry he thought he
- 5:07might die from starvation. This could have been
- 5:10dramatic on his end. like when most men get a
- 5:13cold and they think they need to go to the hospital
- 5:15while we have the same cold right now and didn't
- 5:18think to even mention it. But let's not believe
- 5:20that to be the case and that it really was that
- 5:23bad for Esau. For this purpose, we're going to
- 5:26picture him out in the woods with only water
- 5:28left because he ate all his snacks days ago.
- 5:31covered in dirt, nearly starved to death, and
- 5:33on the brink of fainting because he hasn't had
- 5:36food in so long, okay? So he agrees to sell his
- 5:39birthright to Jacob. He eats his food, and from
- 5:42that point on, he despises his birthright. For
- 5:45those who might not know, a birthright is only
- 5:47given to the firstborn in comes with special
- 5:50privileges, like inheriting a double portion
- 5:52of the father's property, becoming the family
- 5:55priest until the Levites took over that role,
- 5:58and inheriting the role of being in charge. The
- 6:01birthright also comes with the responsibility
- 6:03and expectation of leadership within the family.
- 6:06Now, for those of us who like our siblings, we
- 6:08could never imagine doing something like this
- 6:10to them. But for those who don't like their siblings,
- 6:14you probably can see how this happened. I tried
- 6:17to put myself in Jacob's shoes when reading this.
- 6:19He wasn't the oldest, so his dad probably didn't
- 6:22value him the way he did Esau. He most likely
- 6:25got left out of a lot of the activities like
- 6:27hunting and doing other man -like stuff. I can
- 6:30imagine his brother Esau was trained with special
- 6:33attention, learning how to take care of the family's
- 6:36lands, animals, among other things. Jacob being
- 6:39described as a quiet man tells me he was probably
- 6:42disregarded a lot when it came to being around
- 6:44his dad and brother, and also being described
- 6:46as a tent dweller means he didn't get his hands
- 6:49dirty much. Rebecca, their mom, most likely saw
- 6:52how different they were being treated from the
- 6:55very beginning and wanted to make sure Jacob
- 6:57felt loved and seen, taught him how to cook and
- 6:59do other inside the tent things. I'm sure there
- 7:03were conversations of what it would have been
- 7:04like if Jacob had been born first, instead of
- 7:07Esau, and resentment continued to grow in Jacob
- 7:10as he got older. So Homie saw his chance to change
- 7:13things and he took it. Now. Let's go over to
- 7:17chapter 27 in Genesis, and I'm going to read
- 7:19verses 1 -4 for us. Now then, take your weapons,
- 7:39your quiver and your bow, and go to the field
- 7:41and hunt game for me, and prepare for me delicious
- 7:44food, such as I love, and bring it to me, so
- 7:47that I may eat, that my soul may bless you before
- 7:50I die." So Esau leaves to go hunt and make food,
- 7:54and Rebekah had been sneaking listening in on
- 7:57their convo. She runs to Jacob and tells him
- 7:59to go get two young goats to cook and bring to
- 8:02his dad, so that he can be blessed instead of
- 8:05Esau. And Jacob says in verses 11 -13, that he
- 8:31had left at her house and put them on Jacob,
- 8:33for the fur from the young goats he had taken
- 8:35from the field to cook she put on his hands and
- 8:37neck. We're going to jump down to verses 18 -25.
- 8:57How is it that you have found it so quickly,
- 8:59my son?" He answered, because the Lord your God
- 9:03granted me success. Then Isaac said to Jacob,
- 9:06please come near that I may feel you, my son,
- 9:08to know whether you are really my son Esau or
- 9:11not. So Jacob went near to Isaac his father,
- 9:14who felt him and said, the voice is Jacob's voice,
- 9:17but the hands are the hands of Esau. And he did
- 9:20not recognize him because his hands were hairy
- 9:22like his brother Esau's hands. So he blessed
- 9:24him. He said, Are you really my son Esau? He
- 9:28answered, I am. Then he said, Bring it near to
- 9:31me, that I may eat of my son's game and bless
- 9:33you. So he brought it near to him, and he ate,
- 9:36and he brought him wine, and he drank. He gets
- 9:38blessed by his father, and in verses 26 -30,
- 9:41and then he leaves. But Esau is back from hunting
- 9:45and preparing food. He walks in to feed his father
- 9:48and to get blessed, but instead he gets very
- 9:51bad news. We're going to read verses 31 -38 now.
- 9:54Speaking of Esau, he also prepared delicious
- 9:57food and brought it to his father, and he said
- 10:00to his father, Let my father rise and eat of
- 10:02his son's game, that you may bless me. His father
- 10:05Isaac said to him, Who are you? He answered,
- 10:08I am your son, your first born, Esau. Then Isaac
- 10:11trembled very violently and said, Who was it
- 10:14then that hunted game and brought it to me, and
- 10:16I ate it, all before you came, and I have blessed
- 10:19him? Yes, and he shall be blessed. As soon as
- 10:22Esau heard the words of his father, he cried
- 10:24out with an exceedingly great and bitter cry,
- 10:26and said to his father, Bless me, even me also,
- 10:30my father. But he said, Your brother came deceitfully,
- 10:33and he has taken away your blessing. Esau said,
- 10:36Is he not rightfully named Jacob? For he has
- 10:39cheated me these two times. He took away my birthright,
- 10:42and behold, now he has taken away my blessing.
- 10:45And then he said, Have you not reserved a blessing
- 10:48for me? Isaac answered and said to Esau, Behold,
- 10:51I have made him lord over you, and all of your
- 10:54brothers I have given to him for servants, and
- 10:57with grain and wine I have sustained him. What
- 11:00then can I do for you, my son? Esau said to his
- 11:03father, Have you but one blessing, my father?
- 11:05Bless me, even me also, O my father. And Esau
- 11:08lifted up his voice and wept. Later in that chapter,
- 11:11we see that Esau gets pissed. His mom finds out
- 11:14and tells Jacob to run away because his brother
- 11:16wants to kill him. Rebecca tells Isaac she basically
- 11:19would rather die than have Jacob marry a Hittite
- 11:22woman from the land that they live in like his
- 11:24brother Esau did, and to please send Jacob away
- 11:27to find a wife. Isaac sends Jacob away in chapter
- 11:3128. and basically says, your mom doesn't want
- 11:34you to marry a woman from here, so go to her
- 11:36family and get a wife from there. Also, let me
- 11:39pass down the blessing God gave to your grandpa.
- 11:43Jacob leaves and heads to a place called Horan.
- 11:46On his journey though, he obviously has to sleep
- 11:48at some point, so he lays his head down on a
- 11:51rock outside of the city of Lez that will become
- 11:54Bethel, which means house of God, and he has
- 11:57his own encounter with God there in his dream.
- 12:00In verses 13 -15, God says this to Jacob, verse
- 12:0413, and will bring you back to this land, for
- 12:33I will not leave you until I have done what I
- 12:35have promised. In chapter 29 is where Jacob meets
- 12:38Rachel. After his combo with God, he continues
- 12:41his journey and comes upon a well in a field
- 12:43that has shepherds. Let's pick up in verse 4
- 12:46and we're gonna end it in 30. Jacob said to the
- 12:49shepherds, my brothers, where do you come from?
- 12:51They said, we come from Haran. He said to them,
- 12:54do you know Laban? They said we know him and
- 12:57he has said to them. Is it well with him? They
- 12:59said it is well and see Rachel his daughter is
- 13:02coming with the sheep He said behold it is still
- 13:05high day Is it not time for the livestock to
- 13:07be gathered together water the sheep and go pasture
- 13:10them? But they said we cannot until all the flock
- 13:13are gathered together and the stone is rolled
- 13:15from the mouth of the well Then we will water
- 13:18the sheep while he was still speaking with them
- 13:20Rachel came with her father sheep for she was
- 13:23just shepherdess Now, as soon as Jacob saw Rachel,
- 13:26the daughter of Laban, his mother's brother,
- 13:29and the sheep of Laban, his mother's brother,
- 13:31Jacob came near and rolled the stone from the
- 13:33well's mouth and watered the flock of Laban,
- 13:36his mother's brother. Then Jacob kissed Rachel
- 13:39and wept aloud, and Jacob told Rachel that he
- 13:41was her father's kinsman and that he was Rebekah's
- 13:44son, and she ran and told her father. Now, as
- 13:47soon as Laban heard the news about Jacob, his
- 13:50sister's son, he ran to meet him and embraced
- 13:52him and kissed him and brought him to see his
- 13:54house. Jacob told Laban all the things. Laban
- 13:58said to him, surely you are my bone and my flesh,
- 14:01and he stayed with him a month. Then Laban said
- 14:04to Jacob, because you are my kinsman, should
- 14:06you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me,
- 14:09what shall your wages be? Now, Laban had two
- 14:12daughters. The name of the older was Leah and
- 14:14the name of the younger was Rachel. Leah's eyes
- 14:17were weak, but Rachel was beautiful and form
- 14:19and appearance. Jacob loved Rachel and he said,
- 14:22I will serve you seven years for your younger
- 14:24daughter Rachel. And Laban said, it is better
- 14:27that I give her to you than I should give her
- 14:30to any other man. Stay with me. So Jacob served
- 14:33seven years for Rachel and they seemed to him
- 14:35but just a few days because of the love he had
- 14:37for her. Then Jacob said to Laban, give me my
- 14:40wife that I may go into her for my time is complete.
- 14:43So, Laman gathered together all the people of
- 14:46the place and made a feast, but in the evening
- 14:48he took his daughter Leah and brought her to
- 14:50Jacob, and he went into her. Laman gave his female
- 14:54servant to his daughter Leah to be her servant.
- 14:57And in the morning, behold, it was Leah. And
- 15:00Jacob said to Laban, What is this that you have
- 15:02done to me? Did I not serve you for Rachel? Why
- 15:05have you deceived me? But Laban said, It is not
- 15:09so done in our country to give the younger before
- 15:11the firstborn. Complete the week of this one,
- 15:14and we will give you the other also in return
- 15:16for serving me another seven years. Jacob did
- 15:19so and completed her week. Then Laban gave him
- 15:22his daughter Rachel to be his wife. Layman gave
- 15:25his female servant to his daughter Rachel to
- 15:27be her servant. So Jacob went into Rachel also
- 15:30and loved Rachel more than Leah and served Layman
- 15:33for another seven years. That was a lot, right?
- 15:38Okay, so Jacob has been on a long journey, slept
- 15:42on the ground, talked with the god of the universe,
- 15:45and has his love at first sight moment. Then
- 15:48he works for his uncle for seven years with the
- 15:50goal of marrying Rachel, but gets so drunk at
- 15:53his wedding that he doesn't even realize his
- 15:55uncle gave him the older sister Leah instead.
- 15:57He awakes the next morning and is probably feeling
- 15:59extremely taken advantage of and possibly abused.
- 16:03And poor Leah. Imagine the conversation with
- 16:05her father the day before, the flirting she witnessed
- 16:08between Jacob and Leah all those seven years,
- 16:11and then the extreme rejection she felt the next
- 16:13morning. Jacob got his girl Rachel though that
- 16:15he had worked so hard for and loved so much that
- 16:18seven years felt like days, but Leah was the
- 16:20unwanted one. The one that in those seven years,
- 16:23no one came knocking on the door for. She felt
- 16:26rejected, unwanted, and unloved. But God saw
- 16:29her and in verses 31 -35, we see he opens her
- 16:33womb and she had four sons, one of them being
- 16:36Judah. Chapter 30 tells us about how Rachel saw
- 16:40her sister give sons to Jacob and envied her
- 16:42for it. Rachel demands Jacob to give her a baby
- 16:45in verses 1 and in verse 2 Jacob says, Am I God?
- 16:49So just like his grandfather's wife, Jacob's
- 16:52wife, Rachel, gives her servant to him to have
- 16:54a baby through her. The servant conceives and
- 16:57gives birth to a son and then she gets pregnant
- 16:59again and gives birth to another son. We see
- 17:02Leah start to get competitive and give her servant
- 17:05as a wife to Jacob and that the new wife gets
- 17:08pregnant twice as well. Leah names the second
- 17:10son Asher and says happy am I for women call
- 17:13me happy. I don't know how many of y 'all have
- 17:16sisters, but I do and I know a pointed snide
- 17:19comment when I see one. Later we see Leah's oldest
- 17:22son had been out in the field collecting mandrakes,
- 17:26which is supposed to have a fertility enhancing
- 17:29property, and Rachel asks Leah for some. But
- 17:32Leah says, sis, you've already taken my husband.
- 17:35Would you take this too that my own son got for
- 17:37me? And Rachel's like, sell it to me. Does that
- 17:40sound familiar? Like, I'll give you Jacob for
- 17:43one night. Leah says, okay, deal. Leah meets
- 17:46Jacob out in the field and is like, you're mine
- 17:48for the night, boo. She gets pregnant again and
- 17:51follows with two more babies after that, one
- 17:53of them being a girl. The middle of 30 in verse
- 17:5622, it says, God remembered Rachel, and God listened
- 18:00to her. He gave her a son, who she named Joseph,
- 18:03and then she turned around asking for another
- 18:05one. I love verse 22 though. God remembered Rachel.
- 18:10It reminds me that God will remember me. In my
- 18:12heartbreak, in my hope, in my joy, in my desires,
- 18:16in my sadness, and in my dreams, God won't forget
- 18:19me even when I feel forgotten or left behind.
- 18:22Nowhere does it say that Rachel seeked out God
- 18:25or that she earned his eye or his ear. No verse
- 18:28talks about her praying to God for a son. In
- 18:31fact, we see her demand it from Jacob but not
- 18:34God, but God still remembered and listened to
- 18:36Rachel. That verse reminds me of his love and
- 18:39his faithfulness, even when I feel forgotten,
- 18:42unseen, and unheard by him. I love verse 22.
- 18:46God remembered Rachel. It reminds me that God
- 18:49will remember me, in my heartbreak, in my hope,
- 18:52in my joy, in my desires, in my sadness, and
- 18:56in my dreams. Nowhere does it say how Rachel
- 18:58seeked out God and she earned his eye or his
- 19:01ear. No verse talks about her praying to God
- 19:03for a son. In fact, we see her demand it from
- 19:06Jacob but not God, but God still remembered and
- 19:09listened to Rachel. That verse reminds me of
- 19:11his love and his faithfulness, even when I feel
- 19:14forgotten, unseen, and unheard by him. At the
- 19:17end of chapter 30, Jacob asks his father -in
- 19:19-law to give him what is his and to let him leave.
- 19:22Levin says, no, the Lord blessed you and basically
- 19:25I want what you have. They strike another deal,
- 19:28which his father -in -law tries to do him dirty
- 19:31again. Jacob gets ready to pack up what he has
- 19:35and he plans to leave in the middle of the night.
- 19:37Chapter 31, Jacob tells his wives to be ready
- 19:40to leave their father and his land and they seem
- 19:42basically to have no issue with it, but Rachel
- 19:45does steal her father's household idols. Laban
- 19:48realizes not only how they ditched him, but that
- 19:51someone also stole the idol and goes after them.
- 19:55He gets to them and searches their tents and
- 19:58personal items, but Rachel has the idols hidden
- 20:00while she sits on them on her camel and says
- 20:03something along the lines of, Dad, I'm having
- 20:05my period. There's no way you'll actually make
- 20:08me get off this thing and find nothing just for
- 20:10me to get back on. So her dad leaves her be and
- 20:14confesses to Jacob that he couldn't find anything.
- 20:16He kisses his grandchildren and daughters goodbye
- 20:18and goes back home. Now chapter 32 gets crazy.
- 20:24In verses 1 and 2, Jacob is still on his journey
- 20:26and the angels of God meet him. Jacob declares,
- 20:29this is God's camp and names it so. Verses 3
- 20:33through 5, Jacob sends servants ahead to meet
- 20:36up with his brother and gets a feel for the vibes.
- 20:39Because y 'all don't forget, Jacob ditched his
- 20:41brother and ran for his life after taking his
- 20:44birthright and stealing his blessing. Verses
- 20:466 through 8, the servants come back and let Jacob
- 20:49know that his brother is on his way to meet him,
- 20:51but with 400 men. Jacob gets scared and stressed
- 20:55out. He makes a plan to divide his group into
- 20:58two and hopes if one gets attacked, the other
- 21:00can escape. Verse 9, he reminds God of his promise.
- 21:04We're going to go ahead and read verses 9 through
- 21:0612. I am not worthy of the least of all the deeds
- 21:19of steadfast love and all the faithfulness that
- 21:22you have shown to your servant. For with only
- 21:25my staff I crossed the Jordan, and now I have
- 21:28become two camps. Please deliver me from the
- 21:30hands of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for
- 21:33I fear him that he may come and attack me, the
- 21:36mothers with the children. But you said, I will
- 21:39surely do you good and make your offspring as
- 21:42the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered
- 21:44for multitudes. That took some boldness and courage.
- 21:47He didn't say, Hey God, if you're cool with it
- 21:50and it's your will, will you help me out? Hey
- 21:52God, if it's not too much to ask, could you save
- 21:55us? Nope. He repeated God's words and promises
- 21:59back to him. In verses 13 through 21, he starts
- 22:03to sing gifts ahead to his brother, probably
- 22:05hoping to soften Esau up. And in verses 22 and
- 22:0923, he travels a little with his two wives and
- 22:1211 children and the two servants. and at some
- 22:15point he sends them a little ahead of him and
- 22:17he is alone, at least for a moment. Imagine the
- 22:21stress, the racing, uncontrollable thoughts,
- 22:24the panic he must be feeling as the time to meet
- 22:28with Esau is getting closer and closer, knowing
- 22:31he might lose everything and everyone he loves.
- 22:35His moment of alone doesn't last long, because
- 22:37it jumps straight into verse 24, which we're
- 22:40about to read. Okay 24 through 31 ready and Jacob
- 22:47was left alone and a man wrestled with him until
- 22:49the break of day When the man saw that he did
- 22:52not prevail against Jacob He touched his hip
- 22:54socket and Jacob's hip was put out of joint as
- 22:57he wrestled with him Then he said let me go for
- 23:01the day has broken But Jacob said I will not
- 23:03let you go unless you bless me and he said to
- 23:06him What is your name and he said Jacob? Then
- 23:08he said, Your name shall no longer be called
- 23:11Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with
- 23:13God and with man and have prevailed. Then Jacob
- 23:17asked him, Please tell me your name. But he said,
- 23:20Why is it that you ask my name? So Jacob called
- 23:22the name of the place Penel, saying, For I have
- 23:25seen God face to face, and yet my life has been
- 23:28delivered. The sun rose upon him as he passed
- 23:31Penel, limping because of his hip. Um, crazy,
- 23:35right? Based off these verses, it is to be believed
- 23:37that Jacob wrestled with God, not just argued,
- 23:40not just emotionally wrestled, didn't just see
- 23:43him and ran away, but hand to hand combat. I
- 23:47don't know about you, but I've wrestled with
- 23:49God emotionally and verbally before, a handful
- 23:52of times, and one time it felt physical, actually,
- 23:55but it wasn't. I've known clearly when he wanted
- 23:58me to do something and I get scared so I wrestle
- 24:01with my emotions and thoughts about it and keep
- 24:03asking him for signs or if he's sure. But Jacob
- 24:06in the end didn't only come out of the wrestle
- 24:09with God, but also with a new name. Jacob becomes
- 24:12Israel and a whole nation is now named too because
- 24:15of that moment. Chapter 33 in summary is about
- 24:18Jacob and Esau finally meeting and coming back
- 24:20together Jacob bowing seven times as he gets
- 24:23closer and closer to his brother humbling himself
- 24:26and in repentance and Esau running to his brother
- 24:29with open arms and Kissing him on the neck and
- 24:32greeting as they come back together Let's jump
- 24:35to chapter 35 and we're gonna end here with Jacob's
- 24:38story We're gonna read verses 1 through 3 and
- 24:40then pick up again in 6 and 7 so 1 through 3
- 24:43God said to Jacob Arise, go to Bethel and dwell
- 24:46there. Make an altar there to the God who appeared
- 24:49to you when you fled from your brother Esau.
- 24:51So Jacob said to his household and all those
- 24:54who were with him, put away your foreign gods
- 24:56that are among you and purify yourselves and
- 24:59change your garment. Then let's arise and go
- 25:01to Bethel so that I may make there an altar to
- 25:03the God who answered me in the day of my distress
- 25:06and has been with me wherever I have gone. 6
- 25:09and 7. So God has Jacob go back to the first
- 25:28place God met him in his time of distress and
- 25:31need. Jacob probably needed that reminder from
- 25:34God of what God had done for him and planned
- 25:37on doing. Sometimes when we feel lost or complacent,
- 25:41we need to go back to the place where God first
- 25:43met us, just like Jacob, and be reminded of that
- 25:46moment and promise. We are now going to read
- 25:48verses 9 -15. Verse 9, God appeared to Jacob
- 25:51again. and blessed him and God said to him your
- 25:54name is Jacob no longer shall your name be Jacob
- 25:57but Israel shall be your name so he called his
- 26:00name Israel and God said to him I am God Almighty
- 26:03be fruitful and multiply a nation and company
- 26:06of nations shall come from you and kings shall
- 26:09come from your own body and the land that I give
- 26:12to Abraham and Isaac I will give to you and I
- 26:15will give the land to your offspring after you
- 26:18then God went up from him Here we see God reaffirm
- 26:36Jacob's new name to Israel. Jacob probably needed
- 26:39that too. No one was with him when he wrestled
- 26:41with God. No one was there to hear the new name
- 26:44spoken over him and he was in such a time of
- 26:47distress, it's possible he totally forgot about
- 26:49it. Fear and trauma will do that to you. We end
- 26:52chapter 35 with Jacob going to his father Isaac,
- 26:56back to the land that Abraham and Isaac were
- 26:58called to journey to. And there is where Isaac
- 27:01died, breathing his last breath at age 180. And
- 27:05Jacob ended up staying in that land with his
- 27:08family and all that God had given him. So who
- 27:11is Jacob besides the son of Isaac and father
- 27:13of Judah who we will study next? Well, he is
- 27:16a sojourner too. He's a trickster, a thief, someone
- 27:20who ran away but found the God of his father,
- 27:22or more like God found him, a lover boy to Rachel,
- 27:26a hard worker, a rememberer of God's promises,
- 27:29and most importantly, he acted and followed through
- 27:31on his side of God's promises. He is the name
- 27:34of a whole nation, which that name means to strive
- 27:38with God or God strives. So do with that information
- 27:41as you will, but knowing the history of the nation
- 27:45of Israel, I find it interesting. Also, homeboy
- 27:48can't seem to catch a break when it comes to
- 27:50being named. Anyways, Jacob's story is one of
- 27:54many messy human stories that shows us God can
- 27:58and will use us if we have faith in him to keep
- 28:00his promises and not one of us is past redemption,
- 28:05even when you steal all that you can from your
- 28:07own brother. Okay, let's pray. Father, thank
- 28:13you so much for writing our stories. Thank you
- 28:16for showing us people with messy histories and
- 28:19messy pasts. Thank you for allowing us to be
- 28:22human and make mistakes. That no matter where
- 28:24we're coming from we can be used by you and we
- 28:27are loved by you. That you didn't hold the choices
- 28:30that Jacob made against him but you used him
- 28:32and you continued to bless him. That his heart
- 28:35was full of redemption and repentance and that
- 28:38he chose to act and live on the promises that
- 28:41you made. I ask that we feel encouraged by this,
- 28:44that we are reminded that we are never too far
- 28:46from redemption and that it can always come from
- 28:49a humble heart. That no matter what we've done
- 28:51in the past, you can still use us. I ask that
- 28:55our faith continues to stand strong in you and
- 28:58that we are set free from whatever we have done.
- 29:02Whatever hurt we may have caused others or whatever
- 29:04hurt others may have caused us. Whatever trouble
- 29:08we've gotten into, whatever mistakes we might
- 29:10have made, All right. That's all I have for y
