- 0:08Speaker 1: Our Pick Your Poison series continues. This one presented by
- 0:12Speaker 1: Fox One. The Milwaukee Brewers, Kratz, you were once on
- 0:16Speaker 1: this team and they have never won a World Series.
- 0:18Speaker 1: They've been to the World Series once in 1982. You
- 0:20Speaker 1: were on a team that got somewhat close. So tell
- 0:23Speaker 1: us why fans of other teams that are sitting at
- 0:25Speaker 1: home right now should be rooting for Milwaukee.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Can't get any closer than we got. I mean, game
- 0:31Speaker 2: seven at home, one game six.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:35Speaker 2: The reason they should be rooting for this team is
- 0:39Speaker 2: every one of the games that they play, you just
- 0:42Speaker 2: feel like they're always in it. You're never like, all right,
- 0:46Speaker 2: this one's over. They've mailed it in. They don't mail
- 0:48Speaker 2: it in. Everything about their team is too deep. Even
- 0:52Speaker 2: the pitchers that haven't pitched yet have the ability to
- 0:57Speaker 2: have an impact. They're not afraid of making moves in
- 1:01Speaker 2: the field to get the job done in that situation.
- 1:05Speaker 2: They're not hitting and running on every play. They're not
- 1:08Speaker 2: bunting every play. But they're trying to advance their teammate
- 1:14Speaker 2: another 90 feet. They're trying to put together the best
- 1:18Speaker 2: at-bat they can. And if you become a Brewers fan,
- 1:21Speaker 2: because you're not now, except for Cubs fans, they're ultimately
- 1:25Speaker 2: Brewers fans because they show up at the much nicer
- 1:29Speaker 2: park that American Family Field is. You are going to
- 1:32Speaker 2: a stadium that if you've never been there, it is
- 1:35Speaker 2: electric and they are right on top of you. One
- 1:39Speaker 2: of my favorite places to play even before I became
- 1:42Speaker 2: a brewer.
- 1:43Speaker 4: Yeah. Here's the thing about brewers. If you like old
- 1:47Speaker 4: school baseball, check. If you like good pitching, check. If
- 1:50Speaker 4: you like fun atmospheres, check. If you like a team
- 1:52Speaker 4: having fun, check. If you are looking for someone to
- 1:55Speaker 4: root for that's never won a World Series, Christian Yelich, check.
- 1:58Speaker 4: If you like a manager that's fun, Pat Murphy, check.
- 2:01Speaker 4: If you like a fan base that starved for anything
- 2:04Speaker 4: winning Brewers check it's, it's, it's hard to root against
- 2:09Speaker 4: the Brewers. And listen, I also like the Dodgers a lot,
- 2:11Speaker 4: Dave Roberts and a lot of their players. So, but
- 2:15Speaker 4: if you're just a fan of baseball, then this is
- 2:18Speaker 4: the team that you look at and say, man, they
- 2:21Speaker 4: play this game fun and they play it hard and
- 2:25Speaker 4: they do it. They do it the way that a
- 2:27Speaker 4: lot of older school people would like to say. So,
- 2:30Speaker 4: And Mark Antanasio, the owner, is great. Matt Arnold's been
- 2:33Speaker 4: there for a long time. He does a great job.
- 2:35Speaker 4: There's just a lot of things with this Brewer team
- 2:36Speaker 4: that they do right, and that's why they're in the postseason.
- 2:39Speaker 4: And plus, like we talked about with Cleveland yesterday, they
- 2:42Speaker 4: haven't won a World Series ever. So why not?
- 2:46Speaker 2: Why not?
- 2:46Speaker 4: The Brewers win their– what do they say? Win our way.
- 2:49Speaker 4: And also, by the way, let's not forget Bob Buecher
- 2:51Speaker 4: passed away. He never got to see him win one.
- 2:53Speaker 4: So it would be kind of cool for Murph to
- 2:54Speaker 4: read a letter from Bob Buecher after they win the
- 2:57Speaker 4: World Series. Can you imagine what that letter might say?
- 3:01Speaker 2: And the two theme calorie intakes of a brewer fan,
- 3:07Speaker 2: cheese and beer. So if you like cheese and beer,
- 3:09Speaker 2: this is your squad.
- 3:12Speaker 4: He doesn't like those. Is there anybody that doesn't like those? Scott,
- 3:15Speaker 4: I guess.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Scott doesn't like cheese. And the stuff in beer he
- 3:21Speaker 2: doesn't like either. So it doesn't mean he doesn't like them.
- 3:24Speaker 2: They don't like him.
- 3:25Speaker 3: How about that? Exactly.
- 3:27Speaker 5: They don't like me. I have a different version of
- 3:29Speaker 5: that stuff. It's called tequila.
- 3:31Speaker 3: No, I'm kidding. I do have.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Some gluten-free action. But let's keep it on Milwaukee. This
- 3:38Speaker 1: city is small in big league baseball terms. It's the
- 3:42Speaker 1: smallest TV market until the A's become biggest. So for some,
- 3:48Speaker 1: if you like rooting for the little engine that could,
- 3:50Speaker 1: we already.
- 3:50Speaker 5: Did one of these on Cleveland. They have the small payroll.
- 3:54Speaker 1: The Brewers also live in a smaller window. less opportunity
- 3:59Speaker 1: than others. I agree, but I think they have to
- 4:06Speaker 1: trade their dudes away.
- 4:08Speaker 4: They do, but they make good trade. It's like they
- 4:10Speaker 4: make these trades and they trade a guy away and
- 4:12Speaker 4: then they get to like, you look at Corbin Burns,
- 4:15Speaker 4: they got deal hall has been nice for him. Joey
- 4:16Speaker 4: Ortiz has been a start. Say what you want about
- 4:18Speaker 4: Joey Ortiz, but he's been a nice player. He's been
- 4:20Speaker 4: a starting player for multiple years for him in the
- 4:22Speaker 4: Corbin Burns trade.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Right.
- 4:24Speaker 4: Devin Williams, they trade away. They get players back. It's
- 4:27Speaker 4: like who do they trade away and they get guys back,
- 4:30Speaker 4: and then when they get these guys back, they figure
- 4:32Speaker 4: out how to plug them into Pat Murphy and Matt
- 4:33Speaker 4: Arnold's system. So I think the Brewers have done a
- 4:38Speaker 4: lot of right things, and I think that they're kind
- 4:40Speaker 4: of a– listen, they're not the Rays as far as
- 4:43Speaker 4: people looking at them saying we want to be the Brewers,
- 4:46Speaker 4: but I think people should start looking at the Brewers
- 4:47Speaker 4: and say, hey, we might want to look at the
- 4:49Speaker 4: Brewers and how they do it because Antonaccio, Mark Antonaccio,
- 4:52Speaker 4: their owner, They do spend money. It's not like they
- 4:55Speaker 4: don't have anybody. They do spend a little bit of
- 4:57Speaker 4: money that they have, and their stadium's awesome. There's a
- 5:01Speaker 4: lot of things good about the Brewers. Again, if you
- 5:03Speaker 4: like good baseball, watch the Brewers. They play good baseball.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:08Speaker 2: All the models don't. All the models. Everybody's model does
- 5:13Speaker 2: not choose them to win, and that's how teams are
- 5:15Speaker 2: being built. They're saying our model is going to win,
- 5:19Speaker 2: whether it's Pat Murphy, whatever it is. The other part
- 5:22Speaker 2: of being a Brewers fan, and this is something the
- 5:25Speaker 2: Rays do not do and will not afford you to
- 5:27Speaker 2: do because they tried it once. I'm sorry. They got
- 5:30Speaker 2: Evan Longoria, and then the next long-term extension they gave
- 5:35Speaker 2: out hasn't worked out well. Obviously, you can look it up,
- 5:38Speaker 2: Wander Franco. is you can buy a jersey of a
- 5:43Speaker 2: favorite player. And while we said they got rid of Burns,
- 5:45Speaker 2: they got rid of Peralta, they got rid of Hayter,
- 5:48Speaker 2: all that stuff, they lock some dudes up that you
- 5:51Speaker 2: are able to say, you know what? I can connect
- 5:55Speaker 2: with a Cooper Pratt. I can connect. I can be
- 5:58Speaker 2: a junior... Not junior Churrio. Junior Churrio was Jackson Churrio.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Junior Churrio was one of my teammates. Churrio, you can
- 6:06Speaker 2: buy a jersey and you can keep them. It's... It's
- 6:09Speaker 2: rare that teams are locking guys up and then those
- 6:12Speaker 2: dudes are making impacts. Luis Lara, Christian Jelic is now
- 6:17Speaker 2: the captain. He's one of three captains in the big
- 6:19Speaker 2: leagues right now. He's been locked up for a long
- 6:22Speaker 2: time and they've won the entire time. So you know what?
- 6:24Speaker 2: You can connect with your new team and connect with
- 6:26Speaker 2: a certain player on that team.
- 6:28Speaker 5: And you know why the models don't like them? They
- 6:30Speaker 5: don't hit dingers. They don't have pop in the lineup.
- 6:35Speaker 5: Jake Bowers.
- 6:36Speaker 2: They do though.
- 6:37Speaker 4: They have some dudes that can hit them. No, I know.
- 6:42Speaker 5: They don't rank.
- 6:44Speaker 1: They don't have the homers. They don't have the pulled
- 6:46Speaker 1: fly ball contact. They go against the grain with things
- 6:48Speaker 1: like that.
- 6:49Speaker 5: I think it's cool. I think that's one reason why
- 6:51Speaker 5: you should, what Murph wants.
- 6:53Speaker 4: That's one of the great things brewers do is they,
- 6:55Speaker 4: Matt Arnold does a great job of finding and as
- 6:58Speaker 4: much as trash is, you know, Murph says about the
- 7:01Speaker 4: ivory tower and we've had him on.
- 7:03Speaker 2: He's awesome.
- 7:04Speaker 4: They have a great communication. And they get players that
- 7:07Speaker 4: Murph can fit into what he wants to do as
- 7:10Speaker 4: a team. Christian Yelich is the captain, talks to guys
- 7:12Speaker 4: and says, hey, ABC, this is how we do it here.
- 7:15Speaker 4: And they find the guys that fit into needs that
- 7:17Speaker 4: they have. And it's a lot like the Rays. The
- 7:20Speaker 4: Rays find guys that fill needs that they have. And
- 7:22Speaker 4: once they plug them in, they fit into the experience, whatever, atmosphere,
- 7:28Speaker 4: clubhouse mentality, and they go from there.
- 7:32Speaker 2: You said they don't hit a lot of home runs.
- 7:34Speaker 2: I forget. We just had to stat up there 28th
- 7:37Speaker 2: in the league. How about this? What if I ask this?
- 7:40Speaker 2: I'm trying to look it up right now. What if
- 7:43Speaker 2: they hit just the right amount of home runs? What
- 7:46Speaker 2: do we talk about? Teams that don't make adjustments because
- 7:49Speaker 2: all they're trying to do is pull side power. They're
- 7:53Speaker 2: trying to– everybody wants to hit home runs. And this
- 7:57Speaker 2: is an extreme example, and I hate extreme examples, but
- 8:01Speaker 2: Ichiro Suzuki. Go to a game and watch him take BP.
- 8:05Speaker 2: He could hit a lot of homers. I forget who
- 8:07Speaker 2: it was that said this. He could hit 40 if
- 8:10Speaker 2: he put his mind to it. I'm not saying you
- 8:13Speaker 2: can beat Ichiro Suzuki. He's a Hall of Fame player.
- 8:15Speaker 2: I'm saying, what if they do hit enough home runs?
- 8:19Speaker 2: I'm pulling it up here. When you have 26 home runs,
- 8:22Speaker 2: 25 home runs, 21 home runs, 18 home runs, what
- 8:24Speaker 2: if that's okay? Because... The most strikeouts on your team
- 8:34Speaker 2: is 171. Like, what if that's okay? Like, maybe there's
- 8:38Speaker 2: a threshold. It's like saying, well, I want all of this. Okay,
- 8:43Speaker 2: then I want everything. I want every swing to be
- 8:45Speaker 2: a homer. And I think the Brewers are right in
- 8:48Speaker 2: that happy medium, and they also drive the ball to
- 8:51Speaker 2: the opposite field, which drives a lot of runs in, blah, blah, blah.
- 8:56Speaker 5: Another reason why you should love the Brewers. You're going
- 9:00Speaker 5: to like this one, AJ. You go, and then I'll go.
- 9:03Speaker 4: No, and what Kratz just said, I don't know if
- 9:04Speaker 4: you guys saw this, Ben Verlander's tweet about how teams
- 9:07Speaker 4: hit pull-fly balls and the Brewers are the only team
- 9:09Speaker 4: that aims the other way. Pretty awesome. Because I know
- 9:12Speaker 4: coming up, Tom Kelly, the Twins were like, you've got
- 9:14Speaker 4: to hit the ball the other way if you want
- 9:16Speaker 4: to get a lot of hits. Guess who led the
- 9:17Speaker 4: league in on-base percentage this year?
- 9:20Speaker 3: The Brewers.
- 9:22Speaker 4: Because they foul a lot of pitches off, they take
- 9:23Speaker 4: their walks, they just build it bat after bat, and
- 9:26Speaker 4: it just continues to put pressure on other teams. It's not, hey,
- 9:30Speaker 4: I'm going to go up there and I'm going to
- 9:30Speaker 4: swing three times as hard as I can and punch
- 9:32Speaker 4: out and Go on to the next. It's pressure because
- 9:34Speaker 4: I'm fouling off. Jake Bowers is their.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Home run guy.
- 9:37Speaker 4: We would have 10, 12 pitch at-bats. We've seen it
- 9:39Speaker 4: in this postseason. So maybe there's something to that. Now
- 9:41Speaker 4: teams are going to look at that and say, oh,
- 9:43Speaker 4: maybe we should tell the guys to hit the ball
- 9:44Speaker 4: the other way. No way. Like that doesn't work, guys.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Jake Bowers, third in the league in on-base percentage. Third.
- 9:53Speaker 2: No chance you would have gotten 10 guesses to pick
- 9:56Speaker 2: where Jake Bowers was in on-base percentage in the league yesterday.
- 10:00Speaker 2: He's been that guy since I saw him at like
- 10:02Speaker 2: 20 or 21 playing against him in Durham with the Rays.
- 10:06Speaker 2: He's always been an on-base guy, and now it's translating
- 10:10Speaker 2: to the big leagues.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Yeah, and also the Brewers are great representations of the sport.
- 10:18Speaker 1: They're accessible players. They have an A-plus PR team. Their
- 10:21Speaker 1: players will chat with you all day long.
- 10:25Speaker 2: It matters.
- 10:26Speaker 1: It's the one thing where I feel like I can comment. Yeah,
- 10:29Speaker 1: Pat Murphy, all these guys.
- 10:30Speaker 4: You can't get their manager to stop talking to you.
- 10:32Speaker 5: I know, but that's important.
- 10:33Speaker 4: Vassallo, I can't believe I'm about.
- 10:35Speaker 5: To say this. There are some in the sport. Go ahead.
- 10:37Speaker 4: No, I can't believe I'm about to say this, but
- 10:39Speaker 4: Mike Vassallo, their PR guy, he does anything. If you
- 10:42Speaker 4: need something from him, you want something from him, he
- 10:45Speaker 4: is all about it. except for the one time I
- 10:47Speaker 4: asked him to get someone to slide down the slide.
- 10:48Speaker 4: He said no because it was the playoffs. But he
- 10:51Speaker 4: did eventually get to go down the slide. But, I mean,
- 10:53Speaker 4: you ask him for– I mean, he texts you. He'll
- 10:56Speaker 4: text you the lineups early. You know, it's not for
- 10:58Speaker 4: public consumption, so you can start prepping, right? He'll do any–
- 11:02Speaker 4: you need a player. You need to talk to somebody.
- 11:04Speaker 4: You may– you know, his PR staff does an unbelievable job.
- 11:06Speaker 4: I have to give him credit. When he's not on
- 11:09Speaker 4: Game Changer, he does a really good job.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:14Speaker 5: That means he's watching his kid play ball, which we like.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Yes, he's on game. Yes.
- 11:19Speaker 1: He's a good dad for context, for those that don't
- 11:21Speaker 1: watch the show every day. But they are a great
- 11:24Speaker 1: representation of the sport, and that's important. I'm not going
- 11:27Speaker 1: to name names right now, maybe later, but some teams
- 11:29Speaker 1: act like MLB is a monopoly. It's the only entertainment
- 11:33Speaker 1: product on the planet. So they're too busy for life.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Even sometimes a team that's in a small market and
- 11:40Speaker 1: no one's bothering them. I'm not just talking about one team.
- 11:43Speaker 1: There's multiple teams like this. And then there's Milwaukee and
- 11:46Speaker 1: they're like, everyone's invited. We appreciate our fans. We appreciate
- 11:49Speaker 1: the media that then gets the message out to the
- 11:51Speaker 1: fans that matters too. So if you wanted a 500th
- 11:55Speaker 1: reason why you should maybe be a Brewers fan for
- 11:58Speaker 1: a month.
- 11:58Speaker 5: Adopt a team, then boom, there you go.
- 12:01Speaker 4: And also their TV and radio crew are awesome too.
- 12:04Speaker 4: Let's not forget. I mean, you know, EA, Rock, Sophia,
- 12:08Speaker 4: Jeff Levering, that whole crew that they have there is
- 12:10Speaker 4: pretty awesome too. So let's not And I know the local,
- 12:13Speaker 4: the Milwaukee people love them. So Vinny Rotino.
- 12:18Speaker 1: They do things well out there. They've got it down.
- 12:21Speaker 1: And that's why they are what they are right now.
- 12:24Speaker 1: All right, coming up next, we have a little bit
- 12:28Speaker 1: more postseason-wise to get to in terms of some trends
- 12:31Speaker 1: that we're seeing and some upcoming trends to be alarmed about.
- 12:36Speaker 3: We'll get to that.
- 12:36Speaker 1: And you'll be able to see those games, specifically the
- 12:39Speaker 1: Brewers and the Dodgers continuing with their NLCS on Fox
- 12:44Speaker 1: and the Fox one app. Start your Fox one three
- 12:46Speaker 1: day free trial today at foxone.com.
- 12:52Speaker 5: Hey, here he is. Tyler Phillips from the Marlins joining
- 12:55Speaker 5: us right now. Good to see you, man. How is
- 12:57Speaker 5: off season life?
- 12:58Speaker 3: What's up, dude?
- 12:59Speaker 5: Are you watching the playoffs?
- 13:02Speaker 3: A little bit. My wife watches more than me trying
- 13:04Speaker 3: to disconnect a little.
- 13:06Speaker 5: Oh, that's a good one where you're like, Hey, I
- 13:08Speaker 5: want to watch.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Netflix apple whatever and she's like actually playoffs.
- 13:13Speaker 6: Uh why why because i want to be there and
- 13:17Speaker 6: uh i get the itch and i i almost go
- 13:19Speaker 6: into my side yard outside and just start throwing and
- 13:22Speaker 6: i shouldn't be throwing right now.
- 13:24Speaker 4: Yeah but don't you do like i used to do
- 13:25Speaker 4: tyler like when i watch these teams you know guys
- 13:28Speaker 4: on certain teams and you're going man i want him
- 13:31Speaker 4: to win but i don't want i don't really like
- 13:33Speaker 4: that guy so i don't want him to win so
- 13:34Speaker 4: then you're trying to figure out who you're rooting for
- 13:36Speaker 4: because there's guys on certain teams that you're like, man,
- 13:38Speaker 4: I like that guy, but I don't really like him.
- 13:40Speaker 4: So then you're trying to figure out who you want
- 13:41Speaker 4: to root for, but not really win, but also kind
- 13:44Speaker 4: of win. It's like a weird dynamic when you're still playing.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:48Speaker 3: I mean, there's a little bit of that, but I don't,
- 13:49Speaker 3: I don't really want anyone to win if I'm not winning.
- 13:53Speaker 2: That's, that's it. That is it. No one to win.
- 13:57Speaker 4: Someone's got to win.
- 13:59Speaker 3: No, AJ.
- 14:00Speaker 6: I mean, if I had to give you an answer,
- 14:03Speaker 6: I mean, got my guy, Liam Hicks over there with
- 14:05Speaker 6: the rays. Uh, I appreciate him and all the work
- 14:09Speaker 6: he's done with me. So there's a few other guys
- 14:12Speaker 6: over there that I know with the Rays. But like
- 14:14Speaker 6: I said, if I'm not there, I don't really care
- 14:17Speaker 6: that much. Honestly, my wife gets annoyed listening to me
- 14:20Speaker 6: try to talk about what pitch is coming next based
- 14:22Speaker 6: off of the previous one thrown.
- 14:24Speaker 3: So I go somewhere else.
- 14:27Speaker 4: Do you have a wristband? Do you have the wristband?
- 14:29Speaker 3: Or do you have a pitchcom?
- 14:30Speaker 4: Do you have a pitchcom where the guy in the
- 14:32Speaker 4: dugout for the Marlins is going, Kyler, throw us lighter. Kyler,
- 14:36Speaker 4: throw us lighter.
- 14:38Speaker 3: No, no.
- 14:39Speaker 6: I got to practice if they ever do decide to
- 14:42Speaker 6: go away from that.
- 14:43Speaker 3: So I like to practice on my own. That's good.
- 14:47Speaker 2: That's fair. That's good.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Hey, on that, while we're on unique things from the team,
- 14:53Speaker 1: what did you think of Sandy Alcantara just now?
- 14:56Speaker 5: Slinging some saves at the end of the year.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Did that have anything to do with how you guys
- 15:00Speaker 1: do sim games between starts? And he was like, I'll
- 15:03Speaker 1: just sim game and end the game?
- 15:05Speaker 6: Yeah, I think there was a little bit of that.
- 15:06Speaker 6: Towards the end of the year, you get away from
- 15:08Speaker 6: throwing bullpens more. Arms hanging, but I guess not for him.
- 15:16Speaker 6: Instead of throwing bullpens, he would do touch and feels,
- 15:18Speaker 6: and then it got to the point where chances for
- 15:23Speaker 6: us were a little slim, but Still needed to win games. And,
- 15:26Speaker 6: you know, we had Fairbanks go back down with some
- 15:30Speaker 6: injury and our bullpen was getting kind of beat up.
- 15:31Speaker 6: So Sandy said, hey, I'll get out there. I think
- 15:34Speaker 6: some of that was just a little accomplishment by himself.
- 15:37Speaker 6: I think getting his work in the game was helpful
- 15:39Speaker 6: to him. And I think he just wanted to help
- 15:41Speaker 6: the team win however he could.
- 15:44Speaker 2: Being not far off the injury that he was, you know,
- 15:46Speaker 2: he had Tommy John surgery a year and a half
- 15:49Speaker 2: or whatever it was. How.
- 15:53Speaker 2: How did you guys react when you saw him go
- 15:56Speaker 2: down to the bullpen or you heard he was going
- 15:57Speaker 2: to go to the bullpen? Was the first reaction like Sandy,
- 16:01Speaker 2: like don't hurt yourself. Or was it like, dang it, Tyler,
- 16:06Speaker 2: why am I not doing something like this?
- 16:09Speaker 6: Um, so if you saw how Sandy does his work
- 16:13Speaker 6: in between outings, you would, you would be pretty confident
- 16:16Speaker 6: with him going down there, especially having conversations with him. Um,
- 16:21Speaker 6: So I don't think it was too much of a
- 16:22Speaker 6: shock for us that he was going out there. Although
- 16:24Speaker 6: the first time he did it, I forgot that he
- 16:27Speaker 6: pitched the first game of a three-game set. So that
- 16:30Speaker 6: one made me feel a little bad because they did
- 16:32Speaker 6: ask me to go. But I had thrown a bullpen
- 16:35Speaker 6: that day. I think for a lot of us, it
- 16:38Speaker 6: was just, hey, you want to get your work in
- 16:40Speaker 6: the game and you want to help us win however
- 16:41Speaker 6: we could. I think the day that it was Sandy's
- 16:44Speaker 6: first save, they asked me if I wanted to go
- 16:46Speaker 6: back uh in the eighth inning and like i said
- 16:49Speaker 6: i just threw a bullpen that day so or the
- 16:51Speaker 6: day before so arm wasn't really feeling up to it
- 16:54Speaker 6: but we had those conversations just trying to get our
- 16:55Speaker 6: work in game and uh see how it went i
- 16:58Speaker 6: mean i know sandy did it yuri did it jansen
- 17:00Speaker 6: junk did it uh me and gusto we both came
- 17:04Speaker 6: out of the bullpen at some point throughout the year
- 17:06Speaker 6: so it wasn't too far-fetched for us to to do
- 17:09Speaker 6: it again um but i do think for me it
- 17:12Speaker 6: was just the workloads are different. Uh, the high stress
- 17:15Speaker 6: pitches out of the bullpen, especially for me, I like to,
- 17:18Speaker 6: I get a little animated out there. So, uh, I
- 17:22Speaker 6: wasn't too eager to do it, but Sandy, he was Sandy,
- 17:26Speaker 6: the different breed, man. They call him the caballo for
- 17:28Speaker 6: a reason. And that guy, he's a workhorse and he,
- 17:31Speaker 6: he does all his work in between outings to be
- 17:33Speaker 6: able to do that.
- 17:35Speaker 4: Tyler, hold on before I ask you my next question. Uh,
- 17:38Speaker 4: they asked him to do it or he told them
- 17:40Speaker 4: because the reports were that he had told them he
- 17:44Speaker 4: wanted to do this. So was it an ask or
- 17:46Speaker 4: was it Sandy saying, I want to do this?
- 17:48Speaker 3: Well, I think Sandy, Sandy wanted to do it.
- 17:51Speaker 6: He, I think we had some games where we would
- 17:54Speaker 6: go pretty deep through the bullpen. Um, starters would go
- 17:57Speaker 6: shorter and he would just go and come in. It
- 18:00Speaker 6: was during the D-back series. He, I remember he came
- 18:02Speaker 6: in and, uh, I think we had an extra inning
- 18:04Speaker 6: game the day before and he walked in. And so
- 18:07Speaker 6: I heard he, he walked in and said, Hey, I
- 18:08Speaker 6: want to, I want to throw it today if.
- 18:09Speaker 3: It's a safe scenario.
- 18:11Speaker 6: So, um, With a lot of us, there was that
- 18:14Speaker 6: conversation where it was like, hey, would you be up
- 18:17Speaker 6: to this? And they wouldn't be mad if we said
- 18:19Speaker 6: no or if we said yes. But Sandy, I mean,
- 18:22Speaker 6: he makes calls for his own career at this point.
- 18:25Speaker 6: He's been doing it for a long time. He's earned
- 18:27Speaker 6: that respect.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Do you think the game's gotten too soft? We're talking
- 18:31Speaker 2: about a pitcher who's one of the most respected pitchers.
- 18:34Speaker 2: He's a gamer. He throws a ton of innings. The
- 18:37Speaker 2: game's gotten too soft in the sense of, okay, guys,
- 18:40Speaker 2: throw less, throw less, and we have more injuries. Do
- 18:44Speaker 2: you think the answer is closer to what Sandy's doing?
- 18:47Speaker 2: Not for everybody. It's not one size fits all, but
- 18:51Speaker 2: do you think guys need to throw more and we're
- 18:54Speaker 2: babying pitchers too much and getting, and they're getting hurt
- 18:57Speaker 2: more often once they are pushed a little bit?
- 19:02Speaker 6: Uh, yeah, honestly, I think you can look at it
- 19:04Speaker 6: from any, any perspective there. Um, I like to view
- 19:08Speaker 6: it from an old-school type perspective, and I know Sandy's
- 19:10Speaker 6: the same way. The more you throw, you acclimate your
- 19:13Speaker 6: arm to it. However many innings you threw the year before,
- 19:15Speaker 6: you try to push that limit. I like to look
- 19:19Speaker 6: back at the Bob Gibsons and the Pedro Martinez, guys
- 19:22Speaker 6: like that. They threw a ton, and they never seem
- 19:26Speaker 6: to get hurt as long as you take care of
- 19:28Speaker 6: your business in between. If you're asking about the bullpen
- 19:32Speaker 6: in between, I think that's just a preference.
- 19:34Speaker 3: I think in our AAA.
- 19:36Speaker 6: I think they were experimenting with that a little bit,
- 19:39Speaker 6: trying to get some bullpens in game instead of doing
- 19:41Speaker 6: it in between two outings. It seemed like a wasted
- 19:47Speaker 6: pitcher where you could just put a starter out there
- 19:49Speaker 6: get one inning out of them granted it goes the
- 19:52Speaker 6: right way and you throw like a 15 pitcher less
- 19:55Speaker 6: inning but uh if you ask me i'd prefer to
- 19:58Speaker 6: just throw more just keep pushing the envelope see what
- 20:00Speaker 6: you can get uh listen to your body communicate with
- 20:03Speaker 6: your trainers communicate with the coaching staff and um Yeah,
- 20:07Speaker 6: I don't know if I would call it soft. I mean,
- 20:09Speaker 6: everybody's got their opinions. But I would like to push
- 20:13Speaker 6: the limit and get back to that old school style
- 20:16Speaker 6: of pitching where guys are going deep in the games
- 20:18Speaker 6: and they're going 200 innings a year. I know you
- 20:22Speaker 6: don't really see that very often anymore. There's a few
- 20:24Speaker 6: guys now that do it, but I feel like there's
- 20:28Speaker 6: not that.
- 20:28Speaker 3: Many guys that get over 200 at this point.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 20:33Speaker 4: Hey Tyler, you, you pitched him the relief, right? Early
- 20:36Speaker 4: in the season, you were coming in, you were the
- 20:38Speaker 4: guy that was all crazy. We're like, man, this guy's crazy, right?
- 20:41Speaker 4: Doing all your stuff. But then you became a starting pitcher.
- 20:44Speaker 4: So can you explain to people the difference in prep
- 20:47Speaker 4: work for being a starter first being a reliever and
- 20:51Speaker 4: then how Sandy goes from starter back to reliever? Cause
- 20:53Speaker 4: it is different prep, right?
- 20:57Speaker 3: Uh, yeah.
- 20:57Speaker 6: I mean, like I said, everyone's, everyone's different. They all
- 21:00Speaker 6: got their own things. Um, I guess as a reliever,
- 21:04Speaker 6: there's a chance that you throw every day, right? So
- 21:07Speaker 6: you have to have your body ready every day. And
- 21:10Speaker 6: that's where that communication thing comes back in where I'll
- 21:13Speaker 6: have my trainer with us.
- 21:15Speaker 3: It was Victor.
- 21:17Speaker 6: He would work with me every day and we would
- 21:19Speaker 6: just tap in, check in. We had this machine called
- 21:21Speaker 6: the newbie. It would, it would basically just scan my
- 21:25Speaker 6: body and see where I'm sore, see where I have
- 21:27Speaker 6: some muscle tightness or inflammation or whatever.
- 21:29Speaker 3: And, Uh, that would help me get through.
- 21:31Speaker 6: Um, from the lifting standpoint, you would be going two
- 21:35Speaker 6: times a week, maybe three. Uh, there'll be a little
- 21:37Speaker 6: bit lighter, lighter, total bodies starter, a little different. And
- 21:40Speaker 6: you have to get your conditioning in there. Um, and
- 21:43Speaker 6: that's where like creativity comes into play too. Uh, my
- 21:47Speaker 6: let's say me for example my knees were not feeling
- 21:50Speaker 6: good as the season went on and uh running was
- 21:52Speaker 6: not cooperating with me so hopped in our treadmill pool
- 21:56Speaker 6: and started doing some pool workouts trying to just stay
- 21:58Speaker 6: conditioned for that because you are going more than two
- 22:01Speaker 6: to three innings as a starter at least hopefully um
- 22:05Speaker 6: so yeah just to be able to withstand those longer
- 22:09Speaker 6: stretches of throwing you have to be conditioned for your
- 22:12Speaker 6: body and as a reliever you might have to throw
- 22:14Speaker 6: every day.
- 22:15Speaker 2: So you don't want to be.
- 22:15Speaker 6: Sore or tired or fatigued, whatever you want to call it.
- 22:19Speaker 6: And then on the other side of that, you got
- 22:22Speaker 6: the mental side of the game, too, that I like
- 22:23Speaker 6: to take a lot of pride in. When I was
- 22:27Speaker 6: a reliever, yeah, you're right. I was doing the crazy bit.
- 22:30Speaker 6: That's something I believe that worked for me as a starter.
- 22:34Speaker 6: it might work for like two innings, but it does
- 22:36Speaker 6: get a little exhausting trying to just be angry and
- 22:38Speaker 6: whatever I was doing for, for the whole game. I
- 22:41Speaker 6: would still tap into things.
- 22:42Speaker 3: I had my tool belt.
- 22:43Speaker 6: That's what we would talk about a lot where if
- 22:46Speaker 6: I had to take the anger out because an outing
- 22:48Speaker 6: didn't feel right, I would go and get that. And
- 22:49Speaker 6: if I had to go back to a more level
- 22:52Speaker 6: headed side and focus on breathing more, we'd go into that.
- 22:55Speaker 3: But reliever, I feel like.
- 22:59Speaker 6: Maybe it's just like the fan and me are just
- 23:00Speaker 6: watching some, some like demons back in the day, but like,
- 23:03Speaker 6: I feel like you want to just have that little
- 23:05Speaker 6: anger to you, that little, like, it's personal. I'm coming
- 23:08Speaker 6: out for one inning. I'm going to, I'm going to
- 23:09Speaker 6: blow doors off, you know? So I think that's just
- 23:12Speaker 6: like the two big differences there. Um, it's just taking
- 23:15Speaker 6: care of your body a little bit more, uh, in
- 23:17Speaker 6: different ways.
- 23:18Speaker 4: Um, reliever.
- 23:19Speaker 6: So it's a shorter stretch and starting, you got five
- 23:23Speaker 6: days to prepare for it. So you have to have
- 23:25Speaker 6: your routine set pretty strong.
- 23:27Speaker 2: When you run in the treadmill pool, do you have
- 23:30Speaker 2: duckies or do you have floaties on your arms just
- 23:33Speaker 2: in case?
- 23:35Speaker 6: Um, I actually had a, I had an exercise band
- 23:38Speaker 6: around my waist and, uh, Victor, my trainer was holding
- 23:41Speaker 6: it behind me. So I couldn't go forward. Uh, we'd
- 23:45Speaker 6: have the jets going. So I would just be going
- 23:47Speaker 6: through all the, all the different strokes that I could
- 23:50Speaker 6: think of. And then I would do a couple of
- 23:52Speaker 6: breath holds underwater and, uh, I would try to push
- 23:55Speaker 6: the limit. I think the longest I held my breath
- 23:58Speaker 6: was a minute and 47 seconds.
- 23:59Speaker 3: That was my record.
- 24:01Speaker 6: So I was trying to get the two minutes, just
- 24:03Speaker 6: see how fast I can get the heart rate down
- 24:05Speaker 6: and see how fast I can catch my breath, but
- 24:07Speaker 6: not huffing and puffing because, you know.
- 24:09Speaker 3: On the mound, it doesn't seem like a lot of work,
- 24:12Speaker 3: but it is a lot of work.
- 24:12Speaker 6: And when you have to cover first and then get
- 24:14Speaker 6: back on the mound, you got 12 seconds to throw
- 24:16Speaker 6: a pitch and you're waiting for your catcher to call
- 24:19Speaker 6: the pitch.
- 24:20Speaker 3: Sometimes you might not catch your breath.
- 24:23Speaker 2: All right. You're a competitive guy. Confirmed?
- 24:25Speaker 3: Yes? Yeah. Yeah.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Okay. MLB proposed... picking your own opponent for the playoffs
- 24:33Speaker 2: after the higher seed gets to pick who they want
- 24:36Speaker 2: to play. You like, you don't like, what's the positive
- 24:41Speaker 2: and negative that you see happening? Because we said we
- 24:44Speaker 2: wanted that smoke because it could create a lot of
- 24:48Speaker 2: intrigue and storytelling.
- 24:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I did see that pop up on my phone
- 24:55Speaker 3: one day. Yeah, I.
- 24:58Speaker 6: Mean... Eventually, if you're going deep in the playoffs, you're
- 25:03Speaker 6: going to have to play one of those higher seed
- 25:05Speaker 6: teams anyway.
- 25:06Speaker 3: So do I necessarily think it makes that much of
- 25:10Speaker 3: a difference? I'm not sure.
- 25:11Speaker 6: I'm not going to sit here and say I don't
- 25:15Speaker 6: like it. But yeah, I mean, I do see that
- 25:20Speaker 6: how that could be a little intriguing. If like a
- 25:24Speaker 6: lower market team comes in or a team that doesn't
- 25:26Speaker 6: necessarily have the best record. But, you know, I've seen
- 25:28Speaker 6: guys talk about it like, regular season is regular season
- 25:31Speaker 6: and you get to the playoffs it's it's completely different
- 25:33Speaker 6: like it's just getting there is what matters and uh
- 25:36Speaker 6: baseball becomes a whole different animal in that moment i've
- 25:39Speaker 6: never been there um honestly i don't there's only a
- 25:43Speaker 6: handful of guys on my team right now that have
- 25:45Speaker 6: been there and uh they could attest to that more
- 25:47Speaker 6: than me but um you know it might not be
- 25:51Speaker 6: bad to just get the tough one out of the
- 25:52Speaker 6: way you know like maybe it goes your way maybe
- 25:55Speaker 6: it doesn't but I don't really know how to answer
- 25:58Speaker 6: that one. I saw that pop up.
- 26:00Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 26:03Speaker 6: Eventually, you're going to have to play that team if
- 26:05Speaker 6: you're going that deep into the playoffs anyway.
- 26:08Speaker 3: It doesn't bother me.
- 26:11Speaker 4: Tyler, you want all that smoke, by the way. Pick
- 26:13Speaker 4: the team. You get to start. They pick you. Let's
- 26:17Speaker 4: say the Dodgers are like, we want to play the Marlins.
- 26:19Speaker 4: You guys beat them. You know you'd be talking some trash.
- 26:21Speaker 4: It's fine. It's human nature. By the way, also, Talk
- 26:27Speaker 4: about guys being out of shape. I'm going to teach
- 26:28Speaker 4: you a trick that I learned this year from watching
- 26:30Speaker 4: a team that's still alive. There's a guy that pitches
- 26:32Speaker 4: the ninth inning for one of these two teams. He
- 26:34Speaker 4: runs in from the bullpen. He's huffing and puffing. Every
- 26:38Speaker 4: time he gets out of breath, he has to cover first.
- 26:40Speaker 4: He changes like four balls. Watch. I'm not going to
- 26:43Speaker 4: say his name. He might have the same first name
- 26:45Speaker 4: as you. But every time he runs in, like from
- 26:48Speaker 4: the bull, he like stops and he gets checked from
- 26:50Speaker 4: the umpire. And he's like, please check me longer.
- 26:52Speaker 2: Right.
- 26:53Speaker 4: And then if he has to cover first, watch tonight
- 26:55Speaker 4: in the game. if he has to get checked at first,
- 26:59Speaker 4: Contreras will throw like four balls out. The pitcher will
- 27:02Speaker 4: be like, Oh man, this ball. So note to self
- 27:07Speaker 4: and resets the clock when you throw the ball out.
- 27:09Speaker 4: So just so you know, if you're out of breath,
- 27:11Speaker 4: just timeout. I need to throw the ball out.
- 27:14Speaker 6: I have witnessed that one firsthand. People have told me
- 27:17Speaker 6: that I just, it never, it never comes into my
- 27:19Speaker 6: head because I, I just want to go, go, go.
- 27:21Speaker 6: You know, when I'm on the mound, like I'm, I'll
- 27:24Speaker 6: have something in my head or like a good cue,
- 27:26Speaker 6: a good feel that I'm, that I'm dealing with on
- 27:29Speaker 6: that day. And I don't want to take a break
- 27:31Speaker 6: or maybe I like the ball or something. I'm like, man,
- 27:33Speaker 6: I really like this one, but actually.
- 27:36Speaker 3: That's not true. Cause I don't really like a lot
- 27:37Speaker 3: of the balls these days, but.
- 27:41Speaker 4: Sorry, by the way, I got the name wrong.
- 27:43Speaker 3: I'm sorry. I apologize.
- 27:44Speaker 4: They have, there's a brothers, there's two brothers. You'll figure
- 27:47Speaker 4: it out.
- 27:47Speaker 3: There are brothers.
- 27:48Speaker 2: It's Trevor, not Tyler.
- 27:49Speaker 4: I apologize. But, yes, you knew who I was talking about,
- 27:52Speaker 4: so I apologize.
- 27:53Speaker 3: I knew. I've seen him do it. I've seen him
- 27:55Speaker 3: do it. Yes, it's so awesome.
- 27:57Speaker 2: I love it.
- 27:57Speaker 3: You do what you got to do.
- 27:59Speaker 4: He comes in, and I think he does have a
- 28:02Speaker 4: little bit of a breathing asthma kind of thing, so
- 28:05Speaker 4: he does have an inhaler, but it's so awesome. If
- 28:07Speaker 4: you watch him pitch, if he gets in the ninth
- 28:08Speaker 4: inning tonight, just watch how many balls he throws out.
- 28:12Speaker 4: Especially if he has to back up a base or covering,
- 28:14Speaker 4: it is awesome. It is like the best move ever.
- 28:18Speaker 4: And Contreras is like– Contreras would be like– And Catriona's
- 28:21Speaker 4: going to be like, let me waste a couple seconds. Oh,
- 28:24Speaker 4: let me get a new ball.
- 28:25Speaker 2: It's awesome.
- 28:25Speaker 4: I love it.
- 28:26Speaker 3: Dude, it's tiring covering first. I know it's not that hard,
- 28:29Speaker 3: but if you're working hard, you get over there. Maybe
- 28:32Speaker 3: it's someone fast on the base. It's usually someone.
- 28:34Speaker 4: Fast on the base, Matt.
- 28:37Speaker 6: Like the power hitters, they're just going to do the
- 28:38Speaker 6: nice little trot. But usually I'll get some guy who's
- 28:41Speaker 6: just like– like look at Chandler Simpson, for example.
- 28:44Speaker 3: That'll be like the guy that I got to cover on.
- 28:46Speaker 3: I'm like, oh, no. You got to get over there quick, man.
- 28:50Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, that's an all-out sprint to beat him if
- 28:53Speaker 1: you're going to get there. That's the dude who gets
- 28:55Speaker 1: the most infield hits. Well, Tyler, it was fun, man.
- 28:58Speaker 1: Thanks for stopping by. I hope you enjoy the rest
- 29:00Speaker 1: of the offseason here and you get the right dose
- 29:04Speaker 1: of playoff watching, right? That makes the significant other happy
- 29:10Speaker 1: but also doesn't make you want to run through the wall.
- 29:12Speaker 1: You get that balance that you need.
- 29:14Speaker 3: I'm going to do it.
- 29:16Speaker 6: I'm going to end up having to hop on MLB
- 29:17Speaker 6: The Show or something with my boy and just run
- 29:19Speaker 6: a little co-op World Series.
- 29:21Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 29:22Speaker 3: I got to get my baseball itch, and I can't
- 29:24Speaker 3: watch it.
- 29:25Speaker 5: That's what people love, though. People love to hear that.
- 29:27Speaker 3: Pound Territory.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Pound Territory. One to three every day.
- 29:30Speaker 3: There you go.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Tomorrow, we're on four to six, so you can watch us.
- 29:34Speaker 5: Yeah, he needs the adrenaline rush, though, right?
- 29:37Speaker 3: I'll probably be making dinner.
- 29:38Speaker 1: So yeah there you go um well good stuff dude
- 29:41Speaker 1: appreciate the time we'll talk
- 29:43Speaker 3: Soon okay all right appreciate you guys
