Transcript
- 0:00Your Excellencies, distinguished guests and dear friends, A
- 0:05little over a year ago, I spoke at the Second International
- 0:09Dialogue of Civilizations and Tolerance Conference in Abu
- 0:13Dhabi, and I have been blessed to return to the UAE several
- 0:17more times since then. I regret I am unable to attend
- 0:21the conference with you today in person, but I am grateful for
- 0:24the technology that allows me to share this message with you.
- 0:29This conference is focused on advancing the use of modern
- 0:32technologies and also on raising awareness of the risks and
- 0:36challenges associated with them, especially in the context of the
- 0:41family. 2026 is the United Arab Emirates Year of the Family, an
- 0:47important and timely initiative by the leadership of the
- 0:50country. We are blessed to live in
- 0:52remarkable times. While there certainly are many
- 0:56challenges and much turmoil, we can also see good all around us.
- 1:01The miraculous progress of the last 200 years allows us to live
- 1:06longer, travel faster, and communicate more effectively and
- 1:09quickly. And this progress is only
- 1:13accelerating. As we consider the innovations
- 1:16and changes unfolding in front of our eyes, 2 questions can
- 1:20help us reflect on using technology to support strong
- 1:24families. One, does the use of various
- 1:28technologies and media in our lives help to make us better
- 1:32people and strengthen our families?
- 1:352 Does the time we spend using technologies and media enlarge
- 1:41or restrict our capacity to live, love, and serve others in
- 1:47meaningful ways? In marriage and family life, we
- 1:51learn and grow together. In our families, we cannot hide
- 1:56from who we really are and what we really are like.
- 2:00A family can be compared to a mirror that helps us become
- 2:03aware of imperfection and flaws we may not be able or want to
- 2:08acknowledge. No one knows us better than
- 2:12those closest to us. This is why a family is the best
- 2:17place to teach our children and to be role models of how to use
- 2:21appropriately modern technological advancements and
- 2:25how to become who we and they really need to become.
- 2:29I strongly believe in the principle of individual moral
- 2:32agency, the capacity and power to choose and to act for
- 2:37ourselves in ways that are good, honest, virtuous, and honorable.
- 2:44One of the fundamental purposes of our agency is to love one
- 2:48another and to make the world a better place.
- 2:52It is not to do whatever we want whenever we will, but to act in
- 2:56accordance with what is right and just.
- 3:01As we approach new media and AI, we always need to be cautious of
- 3:06being captured by negative or addictive influences which could
- 3:10affect the use of our moral agency.
- 3:14We should not be naive and place too much trust in any and all
- 3:17applications of AI technology, despite how tempting they might
- 3:22be. Rather, we can and must learn to
- 3:25be wise and to protect our distinctive capacities and
- 3:28abilities as human beings. I hope all of you, as policy
- 3:34makers and experts in various fields, share the view that our
- 3:38goal in interacting with technologies is not merely
- 3:42producing or presenting impressive content or detailed
- 3:46analysis. Rather, it is about becoming
- 3:50becoming a cohesive and resilient generation and
- 3:54community. To achieve success in their
- 3:56lives, our children and youth will need to be true to their
- 4:00identity and focused on remembering who they are.
- 4:05Technology can support these efforts, but should not in any
- 4:09way distract from or become a substitute for our individual
- 4:14and collective efforts to support young people as future
- 4:17leaders. I repeat again, I believe we
- 4:22live in a remarkable season. I'm grateful to interact with
- 4:26and learn from so many of you who live and work in the United
- 4:30Arab Emirates. Observing the accomplishments
- 4:34and recognizing the bright future this country has are
- 4:37indeed impressive. As we now leave this conference,
- 4:41I hope we each will commit to do a little better in supporting
- 4:45families, children and youth and their desire to discover for
- 4:50themselves who they really are and to develop their moral
- 4:54agency in a way that will strengthen their lives forever.
- 4:58I pray we unitedly will pursue these noble objectives and not
- 5:02be distracted from the true purpose of our lives and our
- 5:06love for one another. I thank you for your attention.
