It's another prequel episode. Plenty to get into and talk about. We'll start where we always do with a our patron shoutouts. I put up with you because your father and mother were our finest patrons. That's why. No new patrons this week. But we do have our Academy Award winning patrons and they are Amanda Nicole Goble Nicole Goble Harpo Rat Nathan Mathilde Cottonwood Steve Ben Wilcox Teresa Schwartz Ian from Wine Country Kelly Napier Gratch Justgratch Shelby's pumped for Uzumaki. End of that darn skag. Thank you all very much for your continued support. Katie let's see what people had to say about Austinland.
• 1:06
Speaker B: Yeah, well you know, that's just like your opinion man on Patreon we had two votes for the movie, one for the book, and one listener who couldn't decide. Our first comment was from a handful of fishbones who said I am not the target audience for this book. A fact exasperated by my flipping back and forth between listening to Austenland and the Seven Pillars of Wisdom by T.E. lawrence, a book where there are multiple levels of distrust I hold for the narrative being delivered. Have not read that, but just based on that description, it does sound a little more serious. Yeah, so reading Austenland I kept reaching for some deeper meaning to this story for some more dynamic reason being built to in the numbered boyfriend or some twist or greater lesson to learn from this experience Jane goes through. And as I ranted about this to my roommate, she smiled and laughed like I was missing the point. Because I was. Anyway, I found the characters mostly empty. The idea very silly in a fan fiction way. It is kind of fan fiction. Y I didn't really think about it during the episode, but it is. Yeah, it's like a fiction kind of ficy. Yeah. And Jane's constant flip flopping tiring the movie I found more palatable, but that's not really saying much. Still, I appreciated reading something I wouldn't normally go for and the befuddlement it brought me. And my roommate was very excited that this got me to watch a rom com with her. Although she did say this movie is nothing.
• 2:43
Speaker A: I will say I do think the story is saying something as we discussed in the episode. I guess that's probably what you were alluding to when you said she laughed like I was missing the point. Because I was. But yeah, I do think it is saying something about. Yeah, again, the way we engage with media that we love and you know, our kind of obsession and kind of balancing obsession with fictional worlds, with the real world and all that sort of stuff. I think that's all in there. It's not particularly.
• 3:10
Speaker B: It's not particularly prominent.
• 3:13
Speaker A: I think it's pretty prominent, but at least in the movie, I think it's pretty prominent. Maybe more so in the movie than in the book. Obviously I haven't read the book, but like with her obsession, as though it's depicted in the film and then like her. The way it kind of wraps up like. I do think there is something in the movie to that. It's not a particularly like mind blowing revelation or anything like that or even. Or even like incredibly well delivered. But it's there and it is saying something that I at least found a little bit interesting.
• 3:41
Speaker B: Our next comment was from John Pauley who said, I didn't get to read or watch this week, but a few thoughts. Is Spitting out the potato a reference to the intolerably dull character that talks about potatoes at dinner that wants to marry Elizabeth? I don't think so. Because we had another comment later that explained that scene and what I missed.
• 4:03
Speaker A: I had that thought too, that it was somehow related to that. The guy was like potatoes or whatever. But I don't. I was like, yeah, it doesn't. I don't get what the joke would be like in reference to that. So I do think the other comet explains it better later.
• 4:16
Speaker B: Yeah, not sure, but I find that scene hilarious. Figwit is Brad MacKenzie, not Jermaine Clement. Shaking my head.
• 4:24
Speaker A: Yeah, you got me.
• 4:27
Speaker B: Also, Bob's Burgers does something with the same premise where they larp a Downton Abbey experience and Linda organizes a servant uprising after being forced to live like a downstairs servant in her role.
• 4:40
Speaker A: Yeah, we've watched, I think all of.
• 4:42
  Speaker B: Yeah, I think we've watched.
• 4:45
Speaker A: But I do recall that episode now. I didn't remember it at the time,
• 4:48
Speaker B: but to be fair, there's a lot of parts.
• 4:50
  Speaker A: There's a lot, yes.
• 4:51
Speaker B: Did they do the hand thing in this movie? If not, what are we even doing here?
• 4:57
Speaker A: So I had that thought. But also she's obsessed with the BBC.
• 5:01
Speaker B: She specifically likes the BBC miniseries.
• 5:04
Speaker A: Miniseries, which the hand thing is not in. It's from. Or at least not that I'm aware of.
• 5:08
Speaker B: I haven't seen it. I've never heard anyone talk about a hand thing.
• 5:11
Speaker A: That's the 2005 one one that does the hand thing. So you still think the movie would reference it just because it is such a. But maybe it wasn't quite as culturally. Yeah, it might not have been when they were making the film.
• 5:25
  Speaker B: I don't know still.
• 5:26
Speaker A: I feel like on Tumblr and stuff it would have been pretty like. Yeah, I still think even still then it probably would have been pretty well known. So it is kind of surprising to me that there isn't in the movie at least some reference to it.
• 5:38
  Speaker B: Yeah, there doesn't. I don't recall because they reference a
• 5:40
Speaker A: lot of other stuff from. There was at least one other thing I mentioned, like some of the costumes from.
• 5:47
Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. Some of the costumes at least seemed to be referential to the 2005.
• 5:52
Speaker A: I think they literally were the 2000. Some of them were like, oh, do you think so? I thought that's what I read. I can't remember now from the prequel, but I thought I read that some of them literally were. But if not, they were at least referencing the 2005 one.
• 6:02
Speaker B: I mean it would make sense if some. That some of them could be the literal exact same costume because costumes get reused all the time. All the time. And especially like, it's not even that far apart. Yeah. 252006 to 2013. That's absolutely. Could have still had the same costumes kicking around.
• 6:18
  Speaker A: Yeah.
• 6:18
Speaker B: Our next comment is from Nathan, who said Jennifer Coolidge is a national treasure and every time she shows up, I enjoy every second of it. That being said, she was bad casting. If the movie had been trying to accurately portray the book. The Miss Darling of the book as bad at their Regency English accent, but not cluelessly. So she understands how the world is supposed to work and just can't always nail it. To be fair, Nathan, I did say that I thought the book counterpart was a little less like, airheaded.
• 6:51
  Speaker A: Yeah, you did.
• 6:52
Speaker B: But the kind of silly phrases that she uses, very similar to what's in the book. I think this is actually a general theme in the movie, though it's more of a farce than the book is, with many of the characters changed or just amplified to make things a bit more absurd. That I absolutely agree with. I don't like this when it character assassinates Ms. Hartridge or gives Jane a creepy ass shrine to Pride and Prejudice in her room. But I do like this when it renders Ms. Wattlesbrook so profoundly in love with her own words that she misses the colossal failure of the play because she's obsessed with hearing her own trite and poorly written lines repeated back to her. In this world, Jennifer Coolidge is right at home. I don't know which version I prefer, but I didn't really care for either. As such, I will say I can't decide. It's I didn't see the Martin is an actor twist coming, which made me feel a little dumb. But honestly, I think it's because he's so completely out of the book after they broke up that it seemed like he wasn't even a part of the story anymore for like half the novel. They had their goodbye and nothing made me feel like this was even a singling thread to be picked up. I also think that while the movie says he was scripted to be with Jane, that doesn't apply to the book. He was obviously an actor, but I got the sense that he was meant to be a backup if somebody like Jane had difficulty getting into the roleplay. I mean, I do think that's accurate to the book, but he's. I mean that still makes him like scripted.
• 8:21
  Speaker A: Yeah, still scripted.
• 8:23
Speaker B: Yeah, he was meant to be meta and break the illusion more generally. In the book, the guests don't seem funneled to different romantic partners, just presented multiple options to choose from. Over on Facebook we had two votes for the movie, zero for the book and one undecided vote. Our first comment was from Amanda, who's the patron who recommended this. Amanda is one of my oldest friends, childhood bestie and she said 100% movie. The actors really make it fantastic. The book left me wanting more. Zaz. Anyone want to go on an Austinland retreat? And then Amanda came back a couple days later and left another comment more to say yeah, so I have a few more feelings. I should have told you that to really get the most out of this movie you need to sit around with some of your dear friends, just be a little slap happy on Kool aid or wine and then the movie is quite hilarious. I do agree that friends and wine
• 9:27
Speaker A: I think would that amplifies most movies. To be fair, that makes most movies more enjoyable. But your point I get yes.
• 9:34
Speaker B: Yeah, just the sheer number of fake birds that they use, just the ridiculousness of it all makes it a lot of fun. I personally enjoy the overacting and the historical anachronisms because it shows how Wattlesbrook is just trying to make money and she doesn't really care how she goes about it. Also, I love the soundtrack. Our next comment was from Jasmine who said going off this episode movie I want all the drama and the movie gives me that even if some of it deserves a lawsuit. And we have another comment from Nathan on Facebook who said, I can't decide. The book took multiple shots at Northanger Abbey, and I don't know why they felt like going after Jane Austen's second best book, beside behind Pride and Prejudice. I have never read Northanger Abbey, so I didn't. I don't.
• 10:27
Speaker A: Yeah, I think I would have caught. I didn't catch the shot.
• 10:32
Speaker B: Over on Instagram, we had two votes. I might have gotten that backwards. Two votes for. Yeah. Two votes for the movie, one for the book, and one listener who couldn't decide. We have another comment from Nathan who said, so. There was this very weird running bit in the film of taxidermied animals appearing. I first notice it when Martin startled a bunch of chickens and all but one moved away. He and Jane then had a long conversation in front of the unmoving animal. There was a deer near the shooting range, which kind of makes sense, but they never used it, so why have it around? Finally, Ms. Hartridge spent an extended time in one scene holding and petting a stuffed pug. The movie itself lampshades this when Martin says even the taxidermist was asked to play a role at the ball and says he is a weird guy.
• 11:20
Speaker A: Mm. Yeah. I assume the idea is that they can't have real animals around, so she has these, like, fake prop animals around in order to have creatures. I don't know. I mean, they do have horses and stuff, but. Yeah.
• 11:34
Speaker B: And we also have our comment, our evergreen comment from Tim Wahoo, who said, movies are always better. Thank you for your consistency, Tim. On Threads, we didn't have any comments, but we did have one vote for the movie, none for the book. And on Goodreads, we had one vote for the movie, zero for the book. And Mikko commented to say, I'm not that familiar with Austin's work, so I probably missed much of the meta layer. I don't know that there was, like, that much to miss. I mean, there is.
• 12:08
Speaker A: And there is definitely. You miss, you get. Yeah, there's.
• 12:11
Speaker B: But it's also kind of a surface level.
• 12:13
Speaker A: Yeah. It's not like an incredibly deep. But there is. There are elements that, like, if you don't know the dynamic between Darcy and Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice, it's a very. Like, what we're talking about with the way she's reacting to Nobley. None of that makes any. Like, our criticism doesn't make. You know what I mean? Like, it's. You have to know a Little bit about at least Pride and Prejudice at a bare minimum to kind of.
• 12:41
  Speaker B: Right.
• 12:41
Speaker A: Understand, like what the movie is doing. Again, you can kind of watch it without that. And it's still, I think, kind of works on its own. But it. I do think you need to. To have a fair amount of at least a little bit because I have a very cursory knowledge of all that of Austin's works, but.
• 12:56
Speaker B: So Mika went on to say, I thought it was obvious that Nobley liked Jane for real. But I didn't see the Martin reveal coming. Maybe because I don't think it works. Like, we see Martin staring from a distance at Captain east, flirting with Jane with an expression that doesn't really make sense, knowing it's all just an act.
• 13:14
Speaker A: There's stuff like that. It's like, what is okay. If you think, like, why is he acting like that? There's nobody around. It's not like it's for anybody. Maybe he does actually. Yeah. It's very strange.
• 13:24
Speaker B: Yeah. Or how he talks with Jane about her possibly staying in London for a couple extra days for him after the Austen experience that actually also happens in the book. And then she finds out, like, the next day that that was part of his act. It just feels needlessly cruel if you get told while leaving that everything was fake.
• 13:46
  Speaker A: Yeah.
• 13:46
Speaker B: Yeah. I didn't really care for either version of the story, but I'll vote for the movie for being somewhat more enjoyable. What you probably missed about the potato spitting was Mr. Wattlesbrook's comment, pass the sheep's eyeballs, will ya? So it was not a potato.
• 14:04
Speaker A: It was not a potato. It was a sheep eyeball.
• 14:07
Speaker B: Sheep eyeball. Purportedly, yeah. So our winner this week was the movie with eight votes to the books two, plus three undecided votes that I think were all Nathan.
• 14:21
  Speaker A: There you go.
• 14:23
Speaker B: But no, nobody who voted for the book came out to defend it, which is a little disappointing.
• 14:27
Speaker A: Interesting. All right, thank you all so much for your feedback. We love getting it. We love talking about it. Katie, it's time now to preview Uzumaki. The.
• 14:59
Speaker B: Uzumaki is a Japanese horror manga series written and illustrated by Junji Ito. It originally appeared as a serial in Shogakuken's weekly sign in manga magazine. I really tried. We're gonna on that one.
• 15:19
Speaker A: This is a preview for my segment. Gonna mispronounce some Japanese in this.
• 15:23
Speaker B: We'll do our best, but Manga magazine, Big comic spirits from 1998 to 1999 before the chapters were compiled into three bound volumes. Ito's initial, initial desire was to create a story about strange changes that would occur to people living in a very long traditional Japanese terraced house, such as the one he lived in as a child. During the process of finding a way to draw such a long building, Ito was inspired by the shape of a mosquito coil and decided he could make the building long by having it spiral. In the afterword of the 2001 English language Translation of Uzumaki, Ito noted that the spiral is a mysterious pattern and described writing Uzumaki as an attempt to learn the secrets of the spiral. He also said that he sought inspiration by methods such as staring at spirals, researching spirals, creating spiral patterns by draining water from bathtubs, eating food with spiral patterns, and raising snails.
• 16:34
Speaker A: I mean, those are all things so far I'm only, I don't know, like a sixth of the way through the book. I'm like two of the. There's chapters I'm like two chapters through and so far those are all things where the spirals show up. So that just seems like he was referencing things that he wrote into the book because like a snail is like one of the first things you see. Water draining and stuff you see. Yeah, there's lots of, lots of that in there.
• 16:59
Speaker B: I mean, I'm just, I'm a little bit obsessed with the like, the method of like, okay, I'm gonna write something creepy about spirals. Let me just surround myself with spirals.
• 17:10
Speaker A: It is interesting because, yeah, that is kind of what the characters end up doing. Again, I'm not far enough in to really know where it's going or like what, what it's going to be doing. But so far we've just kind of seen characters descending into madness because of spirals and it is, they're all like. It's similar where they just see spirals everywhere and you get kind of like they have like a mental breakdown because of it.
• 17:35
Speaker B: Uzumaki was also influenced by the positive representation of spirals in media, which inspired Ito to subvert them to create horror, stating usually spiral patterns mark characters cheeks in Japanese comedy cartoons, representing an effect of warmth. However, I thought it could be used in horror if I drew it a different way. Ito has also noted that horror writer H.P. lovecraft was one of his inspirations when creating Uzumaki, stating that the gradual development of the spiral curse was patterned on Lovecraft's storytelling and that Lovecraft's expressionism with regard to atmosphere greatly inspires my creative impulse.
• 18:17
Speaker A: Yeah, that translates so far you could tell Lovecraftian in the way. It's kind of. Again, it's like eternal void, horror. Blanking on the correct term. And I was looking it up just to be sure, because he didn't have this in here. Uzumaki does just translate according to what I'm seeing here. Uzu means like whirlpool, vortex or swirling water, and maki means a roll or a coil or sometimes a paper scroll. And so it's kind of those two words combined, like spiral and like whirlpool.
• 18:49
Speaker B: It's almost like spiral. Spiral sounds like. Yeah, kind of.
• 18:53
  Speaker A: Yeah.
• 18:53
Speaker B: In a 2006 interview, Ito stated that while he was still uncertain what the spiral stood for, he thought it might be representative of infinity.
• 19:04
Speaker A: Yeah, that definitely does seem. Again, so far I could kind of imagine in the same way that Lovecraftian like that. Like the call of the void and the kind of grappling with the concept of infinity and the infinite.
• 19:17
  Speaker B: The infinite nothingness.
• 19:19
  Speaker A: Yes, exactly.
• 19:20
Speaker B: Uzumaki was well received overall. The completed work was nominated for an Eisner Award.
• 19:26
Speaker A: Michael Eisner gives out awards.
• 19:28
Speaker B: Did I misspell that?
• 19:29
Speaker A: No, no, no. I'm just. I was making a joke that I was like, maybe. Are the Eisner Awards given out by Michael Eisner? I don't think they are.
• 19:39
Speaker B: I don't think they are either. Nominated for an Eisner Award in the category of best US edition of foreign material in 2003. The young adult Library Services association chose the first volume for its list of the top 10 great graphic novels for teens in 2009, and the manga was also included on its list of the 53 great graphic novels for teens in manga. The complete guide from 2007. Jason Thompson gave Uzumaki three and a half stars and wrote that, taken as a whole, the manga succeeds, quote, as an elegant and sometimes blackly humorous story of dreamlike logic and nihilism. Thompson featured the manga again in his House of a Thousand Manga blog, praising it for its originality in that it revolved around, quote, a certain nightmarish, fatalistic way of looking at the world. When reviewing the third and final volume, Ken Haley of Pop Culture Shock gave it an A, praising Genji for providing answers to questions previously asked but not answered in a heavy or mundane form. And aside from the film that we will be discussing, Uzumaki has also been adapted as two different video games, both in 2000 and as a four episode anime miniseries which premiered on Netflix in 2024 following some production hiccups.
• 21:12
Speaker A: Yeah, that was the one I was aware of. I was surprised when Shelby requested this that we weren't doing that because that was the only. I didn't realize they had made, in fact a film called Uzumaki in 2000 that we're going to learn a little bit about now. Uzumaki Spiral. So it's just called Uzumaki in Japan, but in the American title for it was. Spiral is a 2000 film directed by Higuchinsky who is known for Nagai Yume, Tokyo 10 +1. And then it was written by Kingo Kaji, Ken Gokaji probably who wrote Tokyo Gore Police, Garo and Samurai Princess, as well as Takayo Nita who wrote Bloody Night a Go Go and Chika Yasuo, who was the only writing credit was this. And then a few more names that I'm gonna butcher. The actors in this film do my best. The film stars Eriko Hatsune. FIFA or fifan? Not exactly sure. Hinako Saiki, Shin Yoon Kyung, Kiko Takahashi and rin Osugi. That is the cast. It has a 61% on Rotten Tomatoes, a 62 on Metacritic and a 6.1 out of 10 on IMDb. This was the feature film debut for director Akihiro Higuchi, who is direct under his like, kind of alias, Higuchinsky. It's kind of his nickname when he's as a director. Higuchinsky stated that he originally wanted to make a film like Star wars apparently, but then said he realized that quote, because I'm Japanese, I should do something different, end quote. I don't know what that quote's from. This is all from Wikipedia, so I don't know where that quotes from, but it cracked me up since I'm Japanese, I should do something different than Star Wars. All right, yeah, sure, fair enough. I guess. Fair enough. Higashinsky had been reading a manga magazine compilation which contained, as you mentioned, it came out kind of week by week, contained Ito's Uzumaki. Higashinski thought that it was brilliant and he asked Kengo Kaji, who is, I believe, the writer. Yeah, yeah. One of the writers on the film, to adapt it. And he had found out at that point that the manga was already in the process of being made into a film and that the producers were looking for a director. So convenient for him, when describing the lure of Uzumaki using the Japanese word kakai, which translates to, quote, strange and mysterious things or people, and said, quote, the allure of Uzumaki is not that the Uzumaki itself is scary, but rather the changes in the people caught up in it, end quote. Which is. Yeah, that's true. The film was backed and produced by Toyoyoki Yokohama's Omega Project, who had previously produced the film the Audition, which is a very famous Japanese horror film that lots of people have heard of. Very like graphic, like it's widely like a lot of those, like most insane, intense horror films or whatever. A lot of people will mention the Audition. I've not seen it.
• 24:41
Speaker B: I've never seen, I've heard, I'm aware of.
• 24:43
Speaker A: I have no real desire to see it based on what I know of the story. I'm not saying it's not good, I'm just saying I'm just not really something super interested in. This is way more appealing to me because it's way more kind of interesting in line with the kind of stuff I'm into. Higashinsky desired for the film to be as faithful to the manga as possible, but problem with that, the manga had not been completed at the time of filming. So the ending of this film does depart, and I don't know how, but apparently does depart quite severely from what the book's ending is because the book was not done at this point.
• 25:13
  Speaker B: Interesting.
• 25:14
Speaker A: Getting to a couple IMDb trivia facts. Around the six minute mark, when we first see the angry cop, he looks at a wanted poster and the image on the wanted poster is Junji Ito, the creator of the manga. So a little author cameo there.
• 25:29
Speaker B: Love an author cameo.
• 25:31
Speaker A: And then in getting into some reviews of the film. In his review of the film for the New York Times, Elvis Mitchell said that the noted the way the film develops the mood, finding it part of the cycle of Jack Japanese films like Koshi Kurosawa's Cure and Hideo Nakata's Ring. That's the original the Ring, I believe as quote, vivid, state of the art scare films that move so swiftly that psychological underpinnings are a luxury. End quote. He also concluded that the film quote, in the film, quote, things get really weird, really get weird, though not particularly scary, and called it ultimately disappointing. Variety's Dennis Harvey described the film as, quote, intriguing, if ultimately unsatisfying, end quote. And also criticized a perceived lack of atmosphere between set pieces, along with its, quote, typically bland, school girlish heroine. Writing for the Oregonian, Kim Morgan described the film as, quote, beautiful, cold, oddly colorful and just plain otherworldly, and wrote that it contains, quote, many creatively terrifying and effectively gross sequences that stand on their own beautifully, but lamented quote, it doesn't flow into a consistently building into a consistent building of terror, end quote. Writing for Film Threat, Ross Williams praised the film's sound design and quote, cheesy, yet at the same time impressive and effective special effects, saying quote while not as effectively creepy as the Ring, Uzumaki undoubtedly deserves to be watched, end quote. Writing for the A.V. club, Scott Tobias noted the style of the film, opining, quote, higacinski's relentless kinetic shooting style doesn't pause for anything like a lot of music, video and commercial directors, which I assume is maybe where he comes from, which would make sense. His achievement is better considered shot by shot than as a whole, end quote and then all movies. Josh Roski gave the film a score of three and a half stars out of five, calling it, quote, visually imaginative and engaging offbeat horror film, but it's willful and unresolved storyline doesn't offer much in the way of psychological resonance, end quote. So a lot of people saying kind of interesting looking, has some compelling moments, but doesn't really all come together.
• 27:38
Speaker B: Basically it feels in line. I looked at some of the letterboxd reviews for this while I was making my social media posts and this feels in line with what a lot of those were saying. So interesting.
• 27:50
Speaker A: All right. And maybe part of that is that the book wasn't done so they were figuring out how to end it and didn't really come up with a compelling ending. Whereas maybe the book has a more compelling ending. We will see. As always, you can do us a favor by heading over to Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Blue Sky, Goodreads, any of those places interact. • 28:42
Speaker B: request from this was a request from Shelby.
• 28:46
Speaker A: There you Go Katie. Where can people watch Uzumaki?
• 28:49
Speaker B: Well, as always, you can check with your local library. Unlikely, maybe. Or a local video rental store if you still got one of those.
• 28:59
Speaker A: Unlikely to have. But also unlikely for them to happen. Probably both.
• 29:04
Speaker B: Otherwise you can stream this with a subscription through Cineverse or something called Retro Crush. I also saw a lot of different like anime streaming sites pop up when I looked this up, but I didn't check to see if it was actually on any of them.
• 29:23
Speaker A: You also. There's a. There's. You run the risk of whether or not it's. No, because the Netflix one would only be on Netflix. So. Yeah, I was gonna say. Yeah.
• 29:31
Speaker B: Or you can rent it for around $2 through Prime Video.
• 29:36
Speaker A: I think I also saw a copy of it just on YouTube. I don't know if it's the actual movie or like how much it's censored or whatever, you know what I mean? But I did think I saw just like a whole. I saw an hour and 40 minute version or something that's this called.
• 29:49
Speaker B: So you might be able to just watch.
• 29:50
Speaker A: You might be able to watch it on YouTube again, I don't know how legal that version is, if it's like from an actual distributor or what. Cause sometimes old movies like that do get uploaded, you know, by whatever. But yeah, you can also just rent it on Prime Video. So there you go. Yeah, no, I'm interested to watch this because I hadn't heard of it. And the movie poster for it looks interesting. Like the visual style.

Speaker B: Yeah, the visuals look really interesting.

Speaker A: Look really interesting. And it's a very. I've heard of this particular author and this story numerous times and other stories of his. There's the. I think he also did the famous one this Hole is Made for Me or whatever where it's like these holes appear in the side of a mountain that are like people shaped.
• 30:31
Speaker B: I have not heard of this.
• 30:32
Speaker A: And people, they have this. Similar to the Call of the Void. They have this kind of unceasing desire to crawl into the hole and slide. And then once they're in, they can't get out obviously, but they go full.
• 30:47
  Speaker B: Don't like that.
• 30:48
Speaker A: It's a very. I'm pretty sure that's Junji Ito as well. Well, it's another one of his stories. Very creepy. He does a lot of those kind of similar things. But I've heard of Spiral and has some so far in the two chapters in I Am has some very striking creepy visuals that are kind of that perfect. They're not the exact same, not remotely the exact same style of like the art from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. But it evokes similar types of like. Yeah, if you're 15 or 12 reading, you know, in that like, like young adult age reading this, it would be very, very creepy.

  Speaker B: Fear and revulsion.
• 31:23
Speaker A: Yes. Yeah, that's yeah. Because a lot of it is kind of like this very tactile like physical like grossness thing. Yeah, it's very interesting so far. Again, I'm not sure where it'll go and how much I'll like it as an actual story, but I'm enjoying reading it so far and interested to see what the movie does with it. So come back in one week's time. We're talking about Uzumaki. Until that time, guys, gals, non binary pals and everybody else else keep reading books, keep watching movies and keep being awesome.
