- 0:25Speaker 2: is coming to a close, but does that mean the
- 0:27Speaker 2: rut is over? No way, There's still plenty of ways
- 0:31Speaker 2: to capitalize on cold fronts and buck movement this time
- 0:35Speaker 2: of year.
- 0:36Speaker 3: This is rutfresh. Let's go.
- 0:46Speaker 4: What's happening all my woods people. My name is Tyler Jones.
- 0:50Speaker 4: I'm your host, one of your hosts, and Casey Smith
- 0:52Speaker 4: is here. This is rutfresh Radio is brought to you
- 0:55Speaker 4: by first Light Gear. Today we're back on the Nebraska
- 1:00Speaker 4: Furniture Mark.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Hey how about that?
- 1:02Speaker 2: And by the way, uh speaking first like year, it
- 1:06Speaker 2: is Black Friday Week. I don't know if y'all know that,
- 1:09Speaker 2: but the capitalist society we live in has.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Pushed this single day into like a lot of day.
- 1:15Speaker 4: Be careful with how you say that, because my wife
- 1:17Speaker 4: just walked in and if you say Black Friday week.
- 1:19Speaker 3: That means you're a week from Black Friday.
- 1:22Speaker 2: She thinks that it'll be Black Friday in a week,
- 1:24Speaker 2: you knows.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Monday week or whatever. Oh yeah, it's been Monday week.
- 1:28Speaker 3: You know, I actually understand that. But I understand it.
- 1:33Speaker 2: I just like being difficult because I got in me
- 1:35Speaker 2: as as does your wife.
- 1:37Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Como, oh, como. Yeah, that's where it comes from. She
- 1:40Speaker 2: got that bird creek. But this is rough Fresh Radio.
- 1:44Speaker 2: We ain't gonna talk about too much that stuff, but
- 1:45Speaker 2: go check out the meat eater website, first lat website,
- 1:48Speaker 2: all that stuff for some great Black Friday deals. Follow
- 1:50Speaker 2: us on social she can see some more detail about
- 1:52Speaker 2: that stuff. You know, we're going to try to do
- 1:53Speaker 2: this week is be real funny and not talk about
- 1:56Speaker 2: sales too much and hopefully that y'all like that.
- 1:58Speaker 4: But hey, you know, here's the thing. Black Friday is
- 2:01Speaker 4: a good chance to get things you need. That's guarantee you.
- 2:03Speaker 4: I mean, this is me telling you what I got.
- 2:06Speaker 4: We're sitting in a house that we bought a I
- 2:10Speaker 4: built this house a couple of years ago, and we
- 2:12Speaker 4: bought our appliances on Black Friday and had and just
- 2:16Speaker 4: left them in storage for months. We didn't move until
- 2:19Speaker 4: May or whatever.
- 2:20Speaker 3: You know.
- 2:20Speaker 4: So that was my wife. She's also very smart, even
- 2:23Speaker 4: though she says Monday Week and stuff like that.
- 2:26Speaker 3: She that was her idea.
- 2:27Speaker 4: But my point is, if you think you can dish
- 2:30Speaker 4: out a little money and you may not use this
- 2:31Speaker 4: stuff until next year, it's still going to be good gear.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Yeah, that's or worth.
- 2:36Speaker 2: You know, some of your most expensive pieces are gonna
- 2:38Speaker 2: be the late season pieces because they have the most
- 2:40Speaker 2: material and you can buy them right now, still use
- 2:43Speaker 2: them in late season, and they're gonna be a lot more,
- 2:45Speaker 2: lot less expensive.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Yeah that way, So go check out all that stuff.
- 2:48Speaker 4: I'm all about discounts, man, I guarante gum to you.
- 2:51Speaker 4: I can't be I mean, that's if inflation is too
- 2:54Speaker 4: bad these days.
- 2:55Speaker 2: You know, I've been heck, got my eye on a
- 2:57Speaker 2: few pupews and I'm waiting until this week.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Yeah, you're gonna pull the trigger. No, I don't know.
- 3:03Speaker 2: There's you know, FBI's listening right now, so I can't
- 3:06Speaker 2: say too much. But uh, anyways, we're gonna talk about
- 3:10Speaker 2: some whitetail.
- 3:11Speaker 5: Uh.
- 3:11Speaker 2: There is a cold front sweeping the nation, sweeping, maybe
- 3:14Speaker 2: not the nation. You know, col fronts are weird. I
- 3:16Speaker 2: really don't understand how it works for the Northeast. Thankfully,
- 3:20Speaker 2: we do. Got a report from Pennsylvania this week on here.
- 3:23Speaker 2: I don't cold fronts. I don't know how they hit
- 3:26Speaker 2: all that stuff. So if you've got some information on that,
- 3:29Speaker 2: let us know.
- 3:30Speaker 4: However, generally, for what the plains the Midwest Texas, we
- 3:35Speaker 4: get a lot of rocky.
- 3:35Speaker 3: Mountain cold fronts. Ie, those are the best.
- 3:37Speaker 4: How far they carry that? And do they stop at
- 3:39Speaker 4: the Mississippi or surely not?
- 3:41Speaker 3: I don't think so. I mean, it just depends on
- 3:43Speaker 3: the strength of it, I guess.
- 3:43Speaker 4: And what's going on in the Gulf, which we could
- 3:45Speaker 4: talk about this with as much expertise as the actual
- 3:47Speaker 4: weather van.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Still you know, have no better clue what's going on.
- 3:52Speaker 2: There's a that will help a lot of the hunting,
- 3:54Speaker 2: because you know, we had that huge coal front moved
- 3:57Speaker 2: through for like Halloween, and I can't capitalized on that.
- 4:01Speaker 3: They dude, I've been working on that video today. That's
- 4:03Speaker 3: pretty sick.
- 4:04Speaker 4: Yeah, it's gonna come out seeing I'm trying to get
- 4:06Speaker 4: out before Thanksgiving before yeah, oh hot dog. Plan is
- 4:09Speaker 4: to have it out when this podcast releases.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Hot Dog.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Okay, well, we're gonna link to the Element channel below
- 4:15Speaker 2: you can go watch me kill my biggest South Dakota
- 4:19Speaker 2: buck by far, like one of my biggest bucks. I
- 4:22Speaker 2: killed from the ground.
- 4:23Speaker 3: He's a toad.
- 4:24Speaker 2: They just doing I don't even know if you'd call
- 4:25Speaker 2: it spot in stalk. I mean it was just like
- 4:27Speaker 2: spot and run. But anyways, it's cool. You all enjoy
- 4:30Speaker 2: the video, I think. But since then, the weather's not
- 4:35Speaker 2: being very conducive to white tails. It's been pretty tough.
- 4:39Speaker 2: The rut has I don't think it's as slow as
- 4:41Speaker 2: it was last year. As far as like perceived movement.
- 4:44Speaker 2: We've had some really good reports, especially last week. I
- 4:47Speaker 2: think a lot of big deer went down around the
- 4:48Speaker 2: country in the seven to fourteen dates of the month.
- 4:53Speaker 2: But it's still been pretty warm. It's not been like
- 4:57Speaker 2: just on fire, just cold days. And we're a about
- 5:00Speaker 2: to get that this week of Thanksgiving. So if you
- 5:03Speaker 2: got a little time off or you get a little
- 5:05Speaker 2: room around the holiday stuff, it's a good time to
- 5:07Speaker 2: go get in the woods. And uh, we always like
- 5:10Speaker 2: to be pretty encouraging, like it's it's not a lot
- 5:12Speaker 2: of fun to be a Debbie Downer to be down
- 5:14Speaker 2: the dumps too much, right, Tyler.
- 5:15Speaker 4: No, been there, Yeah, but I'm fixing to be because
- 5:19Speaker 4: I'm gonna be doing all these Thanksgivings, like sitting there
- 5:21Speaker 4: looking at my trail cameras on my whole tra app
- 5:23Speaker 4: just being like, Oh, we also have.
- 5:25Speaker 2: A report from Oklahoma this week, which isn't a very
- 5:27Speaker 2: good report because it was tough.
- 5:29Speaker 3: I thought it was a good report. It's a good report.
- 5:32Speaker 2: The the how would you say that action in Oklahoma
- 5:37Speaker 2: was pretty bad over the past week because it was like.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Got to eighty one day. It was it was rough.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Anyways, You're about to be in Oklahoma during a cold front, yeah,
- 5:46Speaker 2: doing Thanksgiving and there's gonna be big Bucks splashing through
- 5:49Speaker 2: all the rivers.
- 5:50Speaker 4: Don't you think for a second, I'm not taking my
- 5:52Speaker 4: boat hey, because no, Jut just don't know.
- 5:55Speaker 3: I didn't think about it.
- 5:56Speaker 4: I mean, I don't think my wife's gonna let it
- 5:59Speaker 4: like be ahunting thing. But if if you just happened
- 6:02Speaker 4: to see one spontaneously, if.
- 6:04Speaker 2: She's like driving my life, she won't know the morning
- 6:07Speaker 2: hunt happens.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, she's a lot like your life in
- 6:10Speaker 3: that matter for sure. So you can get the journey.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Is gonna be awake. She's tiny. You can carry her
- 6:16Speaker 3: in a backpack. Well, my mom will watch her. Good
- 6:19Speaker 3: morning person. There you go, thanks, dip. Yeah you're I
- 6:23Speaker 3: mean she actually is not tiny anymore. Yeah, I've realized.
- 6:27Speaker 3: Oh she's tall. She's like eighty pounds. Oh she weighs
- 6:29Speaker 3: that much.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Yeah, wow, dick, She's gonna be solid. My anniversary is
- 6:37Speaker 2: is a great day, my wedding anniversary. However, it is
- 6:40Speaker 2: November nineteenth, which meant my honeymoon was a really good
- 6:45Speaker 2: hunting week.
- 6:46Speaker 3: And it was cold the day you got married. It
- 6:48Speaker 3: was called a cold front hit. I was freezing my
- 6:50Speaker 3: tail off out there, dude.
- 6:52Speaker 2: And so like we went to Southeast Oklahoma on her
- 6:58Speaker 2: honeymoon and you know, just Rednick cheap, just poor kid
- 7:02Speaker 2: honeymoon and I'm fishing in the river. It's like probably
- 7:06Speaker 2: the twenty first and then just this gnarly nine point
- 7:10Speaker 2: just goes splashing right through the trout stream.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Just bamby, just chasing baby's dad trying to find a
- 7:16Speaker 3: dough and I was like freaking out.
- 7:18Speaker 2: But uh yeah, So all that to say is to
- 7:22Speaker 2: say that we still have some really good dates ahead
- 7:25Speaker 2: of us. You know, maybe if you're in Note Act
- 7:28Speaker 2: or something like that, you're thinking about kind of more
- 7:31Speaker 2: some different patterns.
- 7:32Speaker 3: I don't know, though, man, like I don't either.
- 7:34Speaker 2: We got a report from Montana this week and it
- 7:35Speaker 2: sounds like it's rocking and rolling.
- 7:37Speaker 3: So I think that.
- 7:39Speaker 2: The thing holds true that Iowa is really specific with
- 7:44Speaker 2: RUT and then everything outside of that, Man, it gets
- 7:47Speaker 2: a little bit softer on like when the hard dates.
- 7:49Speaker 3: Are you know what I mean.
- 7:50Speaker 4: Here's my thing though, Is it Iowa is that way?
- 7:54Speaker 4: Or is it Iowa based hunting media is that way?
- 7:58Speaker 4: I think it could be that because this thing called
- 8:00Speaker 4: fomo where you try you know, like you don't.
- 8:04Speaker 3: It's it's the way you.
- 8:06Speaker 4: Would make like if you weren't doing Black Friday week,
- 8:09Speaker 4: you would do, hey, one day Black Friday, sell, don't
- 8:12Speaker 4: miss it, right, fear of missing out that you're going
- 8:14Speaker 4: to miss the one day seal. So that's why I
- 8:16Speaker 4: guess we're doing the long sales you don't miss it.
- 8:18Speaker 4: But my point is people like to do that kind
- 8:21Speaker 4: of thing, like, hey, don't miss it, now, go get
- 8:22Speaker 4: in the woods, you know. And I kind of wonder
- 8:24Speaker 4: if it's not that way. Also, you have some theories
- 8:28Speaker 4: but about this. But quickly, I have a question for you.
- 8:31Speaker 4: Is the rut shifting or used to your coincidence here?
- 8:37Speaker 2: If you were to hear I think that we don't
- 8:39Speaker 2: understand the rut first of all, But if you would
- 8:41Speaker 2: to just without looking at science and just go observed rut? Right, which,
- 8:49Speaker 2: what is there in this world except what we what
- 8:52Speaker 2: we can observe? Okay, you would listen to ret Fresh
- 8:56Speaker 2: radio and say the second and third week in November
- 8:58Speaker 2: of the best dates. That's what you would hear from people,
- 9:02Speaker 2: even though we all know from like you know, Bill
- 9:05Speaker 2: Winkie kills a lot of big Dear Marjorie kills a
- 9:08Speaker 2: lot of big deer that the fifth eighth is like
- 9:11Speaker 2: the time right for peak chasing. So what does that mean?
- 9:15Speaker 3: Exactly? Are we missing out on? Like?
- 9:19Speaker 2: Do we do not understand that when we perceive rut movement,
- 9:21Speaker 2: it's actually the second push of movement. In the first
- 9:25Speaker 2: push movement, the deer find their hot dose so fast
- 9:27Speaker 2: that you don't see it happen.
- 9:29Speaker 3: I kind of wonder if that's a thing.
- 9:30Speaker 4: I also wonder there's a bunch of big buck killers
- 9:33Speaker 4: that like October better than they like November. It's because
- 9:36Speaker 4: they usually have a property that a big buck exists
- 9:38Speaker 4: on in October and then they can hunt him on patterns.
- 9:41Speaker 4: And I wonder if these guys like that, like the rut,
- 9:45Speaker 4: like it because it gets deer moving, But it is
- 9:48Speaker 4: also those earlier dates also are before a the fighting
- 9:51Speaker 4: breaks the antlers and be all the guys get a
- 9:55Speaker 4: chance at him for two or three weeks, right, So
- 9:57Speaker 4: like the deer is still alive on November fifth.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Well, here's another take on that is that a lot
- 10:02Speaker 2: of hunting media perpetuates ideas based on large managed properties.
- 10:09Speaker 2: And if you have a good buck to doe ratio
- 10:11Speaker 2: on a large managed properties, those dates probably hold really true.
- 10:15Speaker 3: But you know where there's not a good buck to
- 10:16Speaker 3: dough ratio most public lan.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know what's going on public land. It's
- 10:20Speaker 2: the bump and bump and even bump and dump, you know,
- 10:23Speaker 2: like it's just those deer are getting messed with all
- 10:25Speaker 2: the time.
- 10:26Speaker 3: There's dudes chasing them.
- 10:27Speaker 2: It's going wild, right, So like he might have been
- 10:29Speaker 2: trying to breed that though, but then you just split
- 10:31Speaker 2: them up and they all ran different directions. That do
- 10:34Speaker 2: mister cycle because of that, you know, and she comes
- 10:36Speaker 2: in later whatever. So like there's a whole aspect of
- 10:40Speaker 2: like why it might look different in other parts of
- 10:44Speaker 2: the country.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know.
- 10:46Speaker 4: Lots of dynamics, lots of variables. It's pretty fun to
- 10:49Speaker 4: think about.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Man.
- 10:49Speaker 4: I'm glad that we haven't figured it out so we
- 10:51Speaker 4: can continue thinking and talking about it.
- 10:52Speaker 3: That's right.
- 10:53Speaker 2: We got some dynamic characters on the podcast today, don't
- 10:55Speaker 2: we tie?
- 10:55Speaker 4: Yeah, we do, We've got This was kind of cool.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Derek Wolf, who is an ex teammate of one of
- 11:03Speaker 4: my ex teammates, Emmanuel Sanders Uh. He's he was out
- 11:06Speaker 4: in Pennsylvania recently. We he talked to him. You might
- 11:09Speaker 4: have seen him on the Meat Eater podcast fairly recently.
- 11:14Speaker 4: He was on there, I guess a couple of months ago.
- 11:16Speaker 3: Whenever.
- 11:16Speaker 4: That was Dylan Dowson from on X, a guy we've
- 11:20Speaker 4: known for years now. Really appreciate Dylan. He's been a
- 11:24Speaker 4: believer in the Element for a long time and was
- 11:28Speaker 4: one of the He was the first guy that they
- 11:31Speaker 4: were in the industry that ever said Hey, I want
- 11:33Speaker 4: to partner with you guys and be a part of
- 11:35Speaker 4: what y'all are doing, man, So I really have had
- 11:37Speaker 4: a lot of respect for him for a while. Our
- 11:39Speaker 4: good buddy Eric Gentry, who spends a lot of time
- 11:44Speaker 4: in trees with us, he does, and he spent some
- 11:46Speaker 4: time actually with a tag in his pocket, bow in
- 11:48Speaker 4: his hand on the ground hunting out in Oklahoma.
- 11:52Speaker 2: One thing I noticed, and I don't know if this
- 11:54Speaker 2: is an erics report or not, but he said.
- 11:57Speaker 3: Across no way. Yeah, because I heard him say a
- 12:01Speaker 3: cross twice yesterday for sure.
- 12:03Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 12:03Speaker 3: I don't know what it was, but he did not
- 12:05Speaker 3: use the team. Listen, y'all. If y'all's if y'all say crossed,
- 12:08Speaker 3: do you say crossbow? Is that how you say this word?
- 12:11Speaker 2: I actually want to start using that crossbow cross bow?
- 12:14Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that's I think that's what they do, MANU.
- 12:17Speaker 4: Otherwise you're not making sense.
- 12:20Speaker 3: And he's the last.
- 12:22Speaker 4: Byron Horton from Ohio, just a good time, very knowledgeable
- 12:26Speaker 4: hunter man. He's he's got some pretty high level thoughts
- 12:29Speaker 4: about what the deer doing up in Ohio, which is uh,
- 12:32Speaker 4: debatably the Midwest, debatably, the East, debatably the North.
- 12:35Speaker 2: I feel like I just if I want to call
- 12:37Speaker 2: Ohio something it's the Iron Belt?
- 12:39Speaker 3: Yeah, what is that true? Though? Is it actually the
- 12:41Speaker 3: Iron Belt? Yeah? Okay, I mean I think Cleveland is
- 12:44Speaker 3: like the heart. Okay, yeah that makes sense. Yeah.
- 12:46Speaker 4: I always thought Iron Belt too, but I was like then,
- 12:48Speaker 4: I was thinking, is that Pennsylvania though?
- 12:50Speaker 3: Or I guess it's all that. It depends on what
- 12:53Speaker 3: I feel like.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Ohio changes a lot depending what town you're in, because
- 12:56Speaker 2: there's two or three big towns. Right, there's Cleveland, Columbus, Columbus, Akron. Yeah,
- 13:05Speaker 2: that was like a single terminal, it was.
- 13:07Speaker 3: It was a little tiny airport. But Cincinnati is in Ohio, right,
- 13:13Speaker 3: I believe so.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like it's Indiana, but it's not.
- 13:16Speaker 3: It's Indiana. I've never been to Cincinnati. Michael's mad at
- 13:20Speaker 3: us right now. That's a man. He's always mad. He
- 13:22Speaker 3: is made Mike.
- 13:23Speaker 2: But anyways, there's gonna be some good reviews for US
- 13:25Speaker 2: today or not reviews, some good reports for US today,
- 13:28Speaker 2: and uh, just.
- 13:30Speaker 3: To leave y'all before we get into these with some encouragement.
- 13:33Speaker 3: It ain't over. There's big bucks going hit the ground
- 13:35Speaker 3: this week. Get out there all right.
- 13:39Speaker 6: Now.
- 13:39Speaker 4: I've got Derek Wolf, he's an ex NFL player, and
- 13:42Speaker 4: now he's on the phone with us talking hunting because
- 13:45Speaker 4: that's kind of what you live and breathe. Actually, you're
- 13:47Speaker 4: pretty involved in a lot of things, aren't you right now?
- 13:50Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 13:50Speaker 7: Do it, but I mean mostly hunting and podcasting, and yeah,
- 13:54Speaker 7: I do a lot of working out and training and
- 13:56Speaker 7: stuff like that.
- 13:57Speaker 5: But you know, being a dad and husband much what
- 13:59Speaker 5: I do.
- 14:00Speaker 3: Hey, you work out with the Manual quite a bit,
- 14:02Speaker 3: don't you.
- 14:03Speaker 5: Yeah, I work out with a lot, you know.
- 14:06Speaker 4: I played college ball with him at s m U.
- 14:10Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, he he uh he and I got to
- 14:12Speaker 4: go against each other every day for about four years.
- 14:15Speaker 3: I was a safety. Yeah.
- 14:17Speaker 4: So anyway, I noticed that you saw y'all on Instagram
- 14:21Speaker 4: kind of you know, doing some working out together and
- 14:23Speaker 4: that kind of thing.
- 14:24Speaker 3: But pretty cool tie there.
- 14:26Speaker 5: Yeah. Small small world, man, Yeah, No.
- 14:28Speaker 3: Isn't it man? It is.
- 14:29Speaker 4: It's a it's smaller than you think sometimes. But you've
- 14:33Speaker 4: been out in Pennsylvania doing some deer hunting and uh
- 14:38Speaker 4: was what was that like?
- 14:39Speaker 3: Man?
- 14:39Speaker 4: Were you hunting like hills or are you hunting more
- 14:41Speaker 4: flat land country?
- 14:42Speaker 5: Yeah? Yeah, big big hills Appalachia. Yeah it was.
- 14:47Speaker 7: So it's like three hours east of Pittsburgh is where
- 14:51Speaker 7: I was at. So it was like super super steep hills,
- 14:55Speaker 7: rolling hills, deep valleys, big hollows.
- 15:00Speaker 5: So I was hunting a lot. What I was doing
- 15:01Speaker 5: is I was hunting a lot of like pinch points and.
- 15:05Speaker 7: Transition zones and hunting those like those bowls that they
- 15:08Speaker 7: like to you know, trying to find where these doughs
- 15:10Speaker 7: are betting and trying to get down winding from them.
- 15:11Speaker 7: The hard part was the wind switches every three minutes there.
- 15:14Speaker 3: So yeah, yeah, it was it.
- 15:16Speaker 7: Was hard to it was hard to kind of dial
- 15:18Speaker 7: in one good spot. But the first morning was was
- 15:23Speaker 7: really really good. It was we you know, we get
- 15:26Speaker 7: we get I hun from a tree saddle, so we
- 15:28Speaker 7: get set up. It takes about tennis set up, and
- 15:31Speaker 7: then you know, thirty minutes later, first light you know.
- 15:33Speaker 5: Pokes out.
- 15:34Speaker 7: I hears something kind of rustling up to my right
- 15:36Speaker 7: and the dough comes down through and I was like,
- 15:39Speaker 7: I was just a dough and she was just kind
- 15:40Speaker 7: of you know, feeding. There's a big acorn patch there,
- 15:43Speaker 7: so she was just feeding along there, and uh then
- 15:46Speaker 7: a smaller buck came up and like a little basket
- 15:50Speaker 7: six point you know then she didn't really pay attention
- 15:53Speaker 7: to it, and the next thing, you know, all hell
- 15:54Speaker 7: breaks loose and h out in those in those valleys.
- 15:58Speaker 7: It's just like you can hear them forever, and you know,
- 16:00Speaker 7: when they're busting through the woods, and she takes off
- 16:02Speaker 7: busting through there, and this bigger buck comes down through there,
- 16:05Speaker 7: big like nice, like a big like a probably one
- 16:07Speaker 7: hundred and thirty inch eight point comes busting down chasing her,
- 16:11Speaker 7: and I was like, oh, I'm like, you could hear
- 16:13Speaker 7: them all the way for like a mile. You could
- 16:14Speaker 7: hear them all the way around that bowl. They went
- 16:17Speaker 7: all the way around that bowl and then over the
- 16:18Speaker 7: ridge and then you couldn't hear them anymore. But then
- 16:21Speaker 7: after that happened, there was like four different bucks that
- 16:23Speaker 7: came through there.
- 16:24Speaker 4: So just a hot dough brought kind of made the
- 16:27Speaker 4: whole area turn on.
- 16:29Speaker 5: Yeah, just the hot dough turned it all on.
- 16:30Speaker 3: And then.
- 16:33Speaker 7: Like even like two hours later, another buck had come
- 16:36Speaker 7: down from a come up from another spot. But I
- 16:40Speaker 7: saw I was like, man, this is a good spot,
- 16:41Speaker 7: and she's obviously hanging out. I think she was bedded
- 16:43Speaker 7: up there and got bumped by that little buck. And
- 16:45Speaker 7: then I think the bigger ones just kind of all
- 16:49Speaker 7: kind of came into there.
- 16:50Speaker 3: So, well, things are going crazy like that.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Would you think you'd be better off like stationary in
- 16:55Speaker 2: a tree waiting on the mess to come by, or
- 16:57Speaker 2: does it make sense to kind of move and try
- 16:59Speaker 2: to head to your off like that?
- 17:01Speaker 5: So that's what we did. We we got down and
- 17:03Speaker 5: we went we moved up. We moved up to.
- 17:06Speaker 7: Where we had seen them kind of moving down there
- 17:08Speaker 7: because we were on like a saddle too. It's a
- 17:10Speaker 7: saddle right there, so you got a there's movement coming
- 17:12Speaker 7: from all directions. So we uh, we moved up there
- 17:16Speaker 7: about probably like one hundred yards up the hill and
- 17:19Speaker 7: got like right on right on the saddle, and we
- 17:24Speaker 7: we had we had another couple of Bucks that had come.
- 17:26Speaker 5: It was the it was the right move because we did.
- 17:28Speaker 7: We we ended up grunting and rattling at Bucks and
- 17:30Speaker 7: they would come up and check it out.
- 17:32Speaker 3: Was your was your wind more consistent on top of
- 17:34Speaker 3: that saddle?
- 17:36Speaker 5: No, it was, it was.
- 17:37Speaker 7: It was worse actually up there, because that's why we
- 17:42Speaker 7: didn't end up getting being able to kill one. We
- 17:44Speaker 7: had it not I mean some really nice bucks and
- 17:46Speaker 7: like one thirty one forty bucks that uh, and in
- 17:49Speaker 7: the mountains up there, that's a big buck, you know.
- 17:51Speaker 7: So we had some good bucks that were like in
- 17:54Speaker 7: killable position and we just needed the wind to stay.
- 17:56Speaker 5: Right and we would have got you know, he would
- 17:58Speaker 5: have come in there and checked it out. But you know,
- 18:01Speaker 5: when you get them to like forty.
- 18:02Speaker 7: Yards fifty yards, uh, and it's it's thick brushing there.
- 18:05Speaker 7: So you know it's you're not you're not threading the.
- 18:07Speaker 5: Needle for that stuff.
- 18:08Speaker 3: Sure. Yeah, so if.
- 18:10Speaker 7: You're on the ground maybe, but being up in a tree,
- 18:12Speaker 7: you know, fifteen twenty feet.
- 18:13Speaker 5: It's it's a little bit different, more difficulty.
- 18:16Speaker 2: As we push here into the the Thanksgiving timmy year,
- 18:19Speaker 2: you know, like things start to change a little bit
- 18:21Speaker 2: in the woods all the all the leaves are down
- 18:22Speaker 2: and stuff. What do you think the deer are going
- 18:24Speaker 2: to be doing in this next week or so?
- 18:27Speaker 8: Oh?
- 18:27Speaker 7: I think that I think they're either gonna so in
- 18:30Speaker 7: my experiences, I think that they're gonna go into lockdown.
- 18:33Speaker 5: Like I think they're just locking down on our does.
- 18:36Speaker 7: Like they've they've got their dough and they're gonna lock
- 18:38Speaker 7: her down for a couple of days.
- 18:40Speaker 5: And breeder.
- 18:40Speaker 7: And then I think on Thanksgiving Day or the day after,
- 18:44Speaker 7: they are gonna go nuts looking for more does. Like
- 18:47Speaker 7: it's gonna be that It's gonna be that like that
- 18:50Speaker 7: prime looking for does. Like they're gonna be out walking
- 18:53Speaker 7: in the middle of the day, you know, showing their
- 18:56Speaker 7: face in the daylight. And that's I think that's I
- 18:58Speaker 7: think we're just a couple of days away from that sure,
- 19:00Speaker 7: because they weren't really.
- 19:02Speaker 5: Responding to rattles, you know what I mean.
- 19:04Speaker 7: And normally when a buck is like heavy, when they're
- 19:06Speaker 7: when they're heavy, like even when they're on lockdown and
- 19:09Speaker 7: you start rattling, they'll get up and go, you know,
- 19:11Speaker 7: looking around to make sure there's no bucks around, you know,
- 19:15Speaker 7: to just chase them off. But these bucks weren't even
- 19:17Speaker 7: really responding to the rattle yet, so they were just
- 19:20Speaker 7: I think they were still in that like looking for
- 19:22Speaker 7: a hot dough mode, you know, just you know, still
- 19:25Speaker 7: like playing. They're playing, keeping their wind right, not really
- 19:28Speaker 7: making any big mistakes, because that was the thing. We
- 19:30Speaker 7: couldn't get a buck to make a mistake, you know,
- 19:32Speaker 7: he was still going to get his wind right right.
- 19:34Speaker 7: But I think I think that this week is the
- 19:37Speaker 7: week to do it. I think if you're gonna go
- 19:38Speaker 7: hunt these bucks and do like all days, since this
- 19:42Speaker 7: is the time.
- 19:42Speaker 4: Yes, sir man, that's what I'm talking about. That's uh,
- 19:45Speaker 4: I feel the same way. We've talked to a lot
- 19:46Speaker 4: of people from across the country and uh, myself, I've
- 19:49Speaker 4: been in three states last week, and it seems like
- 19:53Speaker 4: that with kind of like the hot weather the first
- 19:56Speaker 4: couple of weeks in November, it's been it's been just
- 19:59Speaker 4: kind of like just real even Keel and I feel
- 20:01Speaker 4: like you get a little weather here pretty soon around
- 20:03Speaker 4: this Thanksgiving holiday and things are gonna really bustle you.
- 20:05Speaker 4: So with that in mind, in the next week, if
- 20:08Speaker 4: you had to guess, you know, a number one to
- 20:11Speaker 4: ten for buck movement in Pennsylvania, what would you think
- 20:14Speaker 4: it's gonna be?
- 20:16Speaker 7: Oh man, I'm probably I'm saying like a seven or
- 20:18Speaker 7: an eight that gonna be.
- 20:21Speaker 5: I think it's gonna I think, I really do.
- 20:23Speaker 7: And I think because what happens is they got this
- 20:25Speaker 7: that little rifle season that kicks off, so they get
- 20:28Speaker 7: a little bit spooky. But once that's over, you know,
- 20:31Speaker 7: they get like a two three day period to settle down,
- 20:33Speaker 7: they're gonna be They're gonna.
- 20:35Speaker 3: Be on it.
- 20:36Speaker 5: It's gonna be good.
- 20:37Speaker 7: I So catch an acorn patch, sit on a saddle,
- 20:41Speaker 7: find it, find a dope, like just do you do
- 20:44Speaker 7: your research and look at an area where you think
- 20:46Speaker 7: those might be bad and get down win from that,
- 20:48Speaker 7: and you'll catch them. You'll catch some bucks looking for
- 20:50Speaker 7: for their next dough because I think they've bred.
- 20:53Speaker 5: I think they've bred their first dough now and now
- 20:54Speaker 5: it's there, they're gonna be ready, yeah, for another They're
- 20:58Speaker 5: gonna be ready like they're gonna be looking for it.
- 21:00Speaker 5: That's right, man, where you're gonna cut him screwing up?
- 21:02Speaker 5: You know?
- 21:02Speaker 4: Yeah, Yeah, that's what that's what we need a lot
- 21:04Speaker 4: of times. Man, we're not good enough to get them
- 21:06Speaker 4: when they're on their game. We got to get them
- 21:08Speaker 4: when they're off the game sometimes. But man, thank you
- 21:10Speaker 4: for the report, Derek. I hope you have more success
- 21:12Speaker 4: this year.
- 21:13Speaker 3: Man.
- 21:13Speaker 4: It looks like you've already done that a little bit.
- 21:15Speaker 4: And uh, I'm real happy for you, man. I hope
- 21:17Speaker 4: that it keeps going well for you. Thanks for hopping
- 21:19Speaker 4: on the phone with us.
- 21:20Speaker 5: Yeah, thanks for having me guys.
- 21:23Speaker 4: Right now, I've got Dylan Dawson from on X. He's
- 21:26Speaker 4: just straight up a killer man. I mean he will
- 21:27Speaker 4: shoot at elk side unseen antlers and it'll end up
- 21:31Speaker 4: being at three fifty you know what I mean, So
- 21:32Speaker 4: they're bigger.
- 21:33Speaker 3: What's going on, dude?
- 21:35Speaker 8: Oh yeah, thanks thanks for having me on.
- 21:38Speaker 9: Yeah, the elk sight unseen this year being a three
- 21:41Speaker 9: fifty is that was a good kickoff to the year.
- 21:44Speaker 9: So sometimes you just got to take those when when
- 21:48Speaker 9: they're handed.
- 21:49Speaker 4: To Yeah, so you've been out in Montana hunting some
- 21:52Speaker 4: deer and you ended up with one of the mule
- 21:58Speaker 4: deer types, right.
- 22:00Speaker 9: Yep, I shot one of the meal deer types this year,
- 22:03Speaker 9: so Montana. You know, for anybody listening who's not familiar,
- 22:08Speaker 9: you basically get an a tag that allows you to
- 22:11Speaker 9: hunt white tail or meal deer. So depending on what
- 22:16Speaker 9: the state you're in. Honestly, pretty much most of the
- 22:19Speaker 9: state that I've hunted, man.
- 22:20Speaker 8: It's like.
- 22:22Speaker 9: Fifty to fifty some areas, you know, seventy thirty and
- 22:25Speaker 9: vice versa.
- 22:26Speaker 8: But there's pretty much white tail and meal deer what
- 22:30Speaker 8: seems like everywhere.
- 22:32Speaker 5: You know.
- 22:32Speaker 8: I'm from eastern Montana.
- 22:34Speaker 9: I currently live in western Montana and so I travel
- 22:38Speaker 9: you know, pretty much from Idaho to North Dakota every year,
- 22:42Speaker 9: whether I'm hunting elk, deer or whatever. So it's, uh,
- 22:45Speaker 9: it is pretty cool because you're not really stuck to
- 22:47Speaker 9: one species or the other.
- 22:48Speaker 8: Sure, and some years, like you know.
- 22:51Speaker 9: Whitetail are doing better their populations and some of your
- 22:55Speaker 9: meal deer are doing better.
- 22:56Speaker 8: And it seems like I'm kind of fifty to fifty.
- 22:58Speaker 9: Ever since I've been twelve and able to hunt here
- 23:01Speaker 9: in Montana, seems like I probably shot I've probably shot
- 23:03Speaker 9: a few more meal deer than white tail.
- 23:05Speaker 8: But it's pretty pretty down the middle.
- 23:08Speaker 4: Yeah, So as far as that herd goes this year,
- 23:11Speaker 4: does it Does it look good out there? Or are
- 23:12Speaker 4: you seeing a bunch of deer moving around right now?
- 23:15Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 23:15Speaker 9: This past week I've been hunting pretty hard. I've got
- 23:17Speaker 9: one more week to go. A lot of tags are filled.
- 23:20Speaker 9: Actually we build two tags. Yesterday my wife shot a
- 23:23Speaker 9: really nice buck. I was with my cousin when he
- 23:26Speaker 9: shot a really really heavy white tail, just a really
- 23:29Speaker 9: old old white tail, really big basis just having gnarly,
- 23:33Speaker 9: gnarly buck.
- 23:35Speaker 8: But yeah, man, it's it's been good I've seen a
- 23:38Speaker 8: lot of deer chasing.
- 23:41Speaker 9: Both meal deer and white tail, but particularly this past week.
- 23:44Speaker 9: Like white tail, I've seen a lot of bucks like
- 23:47Speaker 9: singling out does and literally running them for like a mile.
- 23:52Speaker 8: We we came over the hill.
- 23:54Speaker 9: We were driving to a new spot a few days ago,
- 23:56Speaker 9: and came over the hill and I was like, oh, man,
- 23:59Speaker 9: there's a deer, you know, scooting across the field. And
- 24:01Speaker 9: at first I kind of thought she was running from us,
- 24:04Speaker 9: and I threw up the binos, and twenty yards behind
- 24:07Speaker 9: her was a pretty nice buck, like, you know, mid
- 24:10Speaker 9: one thirties, not a shooter, but just a respectable deer
- 24:14Speaker 9: that you want to look at. And I mean quickly
- 24:17Speaker 9: I realized they were not running from us, that that
- 24:19Speaker 9: buck had that dough on full tilt across the stubble
- 24:22Speaker 9: field and they got to the end of it.
- 24:24Speaker 8: He caught up to her and turned her.
- 24:26Speaker 9: The other way, you know, one of those deals where
- 24:29Speaker 9: they're acting like a quarter horse is like figuring out
- 24:31Speaker 9: which way they're going to go. And then he ran
- 24:33Speaker 9: her basically half a mile half a section back the
- 24:36Speaker 9: other way. So I've seen a lot of bucks chasing,
- 24:39Speaker 9: like single dose and like a little pocketed doze three
- 24:44Speaker 9: or four doors over there, but he's interested in obviously
- 24:47Speaker 9: that one that's hot, and I think there's some.
- 24:48Speaker 8: Hot dos right now.
- 24:49Speaker 2: So you're doing a lot of gun hunting out there,
- 24:51Speaker 2: and right now it is you know, gun seasons are
- 24:53Speaker 2: opening up or are open across the country. If you're
- 24:56Speaker 2: trying to capitalize on that kind of buck movement where
- 24:58Speaker 2: they're pushing dose and and running like crazy, what's your
- 25:01Speaker 2: setup going to be?
- 25:02Speaker 1: Like?
- 25:03Speaker 9: So a lot of times what I prefer is to
- 25:06Speaker 9: get up high if the country allows, and sit and
- 25:10Speaker 9: kind of just let things happen.
- 25:12Speaker 8: So four or five days ago, my dad and I hiked.
- 25:15Speaker 9: Up to this high point and it's all kind of
- 25:17Speaker 9: egg land where we were, So there's a lot of
- 25:19Speaker 9: white tail country.
- 25:20Speaker 8: There's koolies, so it's white tail and melier country.
- 25:22Speaker 9: Again, it's kind of one of those spots fifty to
- 25:24Speaker 9: fifty you don't know what species you're going to run into,
- 25:27Speaker 9: and uh, it's just really good habitat for both. But
- 25:30Speaker 9: we hiked up to this this knob and really this
- 25:33Speaker 9: knob is only probably you know, fifty vertical feet above
- 25:37Speaker 9: anything else around us, right, but it gives us at
- 25:39Speaker 9: least an opportunity to glass three sixty and kind of
- 25:44Speaker 9: just let the deer move to us. Sitting on that now,
- 25:47Speaker 9: we had a mature meldier and a mature white tail
- 25:49Speaker 9: buck that were just straight cruising.
- 25:52Speaker 8: They weren't chasing does they weren't with those. I spotted
- 25:55Speaker 8: both those.
- 25:56Speaker 9: Deer from man shoot almost mild to maybe the meal
- 26:00Speaker 9: there was probably a mile and a half away, and
- 26:02Speaker 9: both of them ran. They didn't trot, they weren't walking crews,
- 26:06Speaker 9: and they ran from where I spotted them to within seventy.
- 26:09Speaker 8: Five yards of us.
- 26:10Speaker 3: Oh that's cool.
- 26:10Speaker 9: It's actually pretty funny because both of them, this was
- 26:13Speaker 9: like an hour and a half apart from each other,
- 26:14Speaker 9: and they took almost the exact same path by us.
- 26:19Speaker 9: And they're just crazy looking for those So I really
- 26:21Speaker 9: like to get up high and sit because had we
- 26:25Speaker 9: have been walking around and you know, moving a little
- 26:28Speaker 9: bit more, those deer would have ran within fifty to
- 26:31Speaker 9: seventy five yards of us. But we were able to
- 26:33Speaker 9: let them do their thing instead up high watching them
- 26:36Speaker 9: for a long ways coming.
- 26:37Speaker 8: We knew, we knew they were both really mature deer.
- 26:41Speaker 9: But I was able to watch me the spotting scope
- 26:43Speaker 9: run from that far away to again under one hundred
- 26:45Speaker 9: yards seventy five yards and know that, you know, we
- 26:48Speaker 9: weren't going to shoot either one of those bucks. But
- 26:51Speaker 9: you know, if you're walking koolies and whatever, it's just
- 26:55Speaker 9: it's it's doable. It's you know, you might shoot a
- 26:58Speaker 9: really nice deer like that, but you're also trying to
- 27:00Speaker 9: judge them as their you know, their tails down and
- 27:03Speaker 9: running in the bottom.
- 27:03Speaker 8: Of the coolie at that point.
- 27:04Speaker 9: So sure, I like to get up high and use
- 27:06Speaker 9: the glass, and especially this time of year when they're
- 27:08Speaker 9: moving around searching for dose.
- 27:10Speaker 4: Yeah, dude, and you're a killer man, So this is
- 27:12Speaker 4: this is good information, man. And you know, Casey and
- 27:15Speaker 4: I have probably known you since twenty seventeen or so. Man,
- 27:18Speaker 4: we appreciate friendship and everything like that, and and just
- 27:21Speaker 4: the supportive on X over the years. Man, We really
- 27:24Speaker 4: has meant a lot to us. Thanks for hopping on
- 27:26Speaker 4: the phone with us. Before you go, though, we got
- 27:28Speaker 4: to have a We've got to have a rating here.
- 27:30Speaker 4: So on a scale of one to ten, what does
- 27:33Speaker 4: the buck movement look like in the next week in
- 27:37Speaker 4: your opinion.
- 27:39Speaker 9: Yeah, based on what I've seen this past week, and
- 27:41Speaker 9: even just like yesterday, it seems like it's only gotten better.
- 27:45Speaker 9: We here in Montana, we had a cold snap like
- 27:48Speaker 9: probably three to four weeks ago where it got really
- 27:50Speaker 9: really cold, like zero or below, had.
- 27:53Speaker 8: Quite a bit of snow.
- 27:54Speaker 9: It's warmer now, so I was kind of nervous that
- 27:56Speaker 9: it was gonna kind of shut off the rut. But man,
- 27:59Speaker 9: the last couple days what I've seen, that is not
- 28:01Speaker 9: the case. I would say out of one to ten,
- 28:04Speaker 9: seven point.
- 28:05Speaker 4: Eight, very specific, that's like my great average man.
- 28:12Speaker 3: Actually college. Probably I was a little bit smarter in
- 28:15Speaker 3: high school.
- 28:15Speaker 2: We appreciate the info, man, the and the good rating.
- 28:19Speaker 2: It gives us a lot of optimism. Thanks dude.
- 28:21Speaker 8: Yeah, no, I appreciate you guys. Thank you.
- 28:39Speaker 2: This is Byron Horton with white Tail Experience, and he
- 28:41Speaker 2: has been chasing him all over in Ohio.
- 28:44Speaker 10: What's up, dude, Dude, I just got through my big
- 28:47Speaker 10: push and uh we're we're regrouping today.
- 28:51Speaker 3: Yeah, that's good man.
- 28:52Speaker 2: I'm glad that you're able to kind of woo saw
- 28:55Speaker 2: and bring it all back in. That's it's a necessary
- 28:57Speaker 2: thing sometimes after a big rut push. Do you feel
- 29:00Speaker 2: tired do you feel like that you achieved something? Do
- 29:05Speaker 2: you feel like you went and did the thing, or
- 29:07Speaker 2: do you still feel like there's things that are undone.
- 29:10Speaker 10: So I feel like I saw the whole rut. I
- 29:12Speaker 10: saw casing, the cruising, the close encounters, missed my shot opportunity.
- 29:16Speaker 10: I saw it all. So I'm at peace with it.
- 29:20Speaker 10: But I'm not gonna lie. Man, I really want to
- 29:21Speaker 10: kill something.
- 29:22Speaker 3: I think you will. I know you did.
- 29:24Speaker 5: You're a killer.
- 29:25Speaker 2: So this past week, you know, you said you spent
- 29:28Speaker 2: a lot of time out there.
- 29:29Speaker 3: What was kind of the major emphasis?
- 29:32Speaker 2: You know, that's kind of like, I guess what most
- 29:34Speaker 2: people consider like the second ish week of the rut,
- 29:37Speaker 2: you know, and things are kind of changing.
- 29:38Speaker 3: What were the deer doing?
- 29:40Speaker 10: Yeah, so I actually think Ohio is a touch behind.
- 29:42Speaker 10: I'll call it the core Midwest. Like I feel like
- 29:45Speaker 10: last week's our peak. Traditionally, I have always taken we'll
- 29:48Speaker 10: call it, like the seventh through the fifteenth as better
- 29:51Speaker 10: than the first through the seventh. Just as far as
- 29:54Speaker 10: seeing do your seeing Bucks personal encounters, generally the weather
- 29:57Speaker 10: is a little better for the most part. But yeah,
- 30:00Speaker 10: I literally last week saw it all. You know, Bucks
- 30:04Speaker 10: dogging does four pointers running loose everywhere? It was a
- 30:09Speaker 10: great time.
- 30:10Speaker 4: So were you hunting you know, travel corridors, pinch points,
- 30:13Speaker 4: or where you spending more time like near food sources
- 30:16Speaker 4: of some sort.
- 30:18Speaker 10: So I would say I am much more of a
- 30:21Speaker 10: let's let's hunt the doze in the betting areas with
- 30:23Speaker 10: maybe like an extra terrain type feature. I generally hunt
- 30:26Speaker 10: the big woods, you know, more and more steeper terrain.
- 30:30Speaker 10: So like I like what I call compounding features, maybe
- 30:32Speaker 10: like a hog back meets the dough betting type habitat
- 30:36Speaker 10: and generally too I was I had scouted some doughs
- 30:39Speaker 10: of late October, so I kind of knew where my
- 30:41Speaker 10: dough groups were and that was the plan, and that's
- 30:44Speaker 10: what I ran. I would hunt scrapes too. I guess
- 30:46Speaker 10: that was my second most popular ambush point cloud like.
- 30:48Speaker 3: That, man, how do you find those doughs? You said
- 30:50Speaker 3: you're scouting? Does how you finding them?
- 30:52Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 30:53Speaker 10: A lot of times so trail cams late October. I
- 30:59Speaker 10: spent four days literally just walk in and yes, how
- 31:02Speaker 10: I'd bump some doz. Yes, I would pull some cards
- 31:04Speaker 10: and be like, oh there's doze in here. On regular basis,
- 31:08Speaker 10: deer poop, just beating down tracks more just like stuff
- 31:12Speaker 10: telling me they're in here a lot more frequent. And
- 31:14Speaker 10: obviously when you're boots to ground, you're seeing the habitat
- 31:17Speaker 10: of this looks like dough betting, Like I'm not going
- 31:20Speaker 10: to make up some crazy term, this is where the
- 31:23Speaker 10: do's bed.
- 31:23Speaker 2: Yeah, so you're looking at thickets and stuff that you
- 31:25Speaker 2: see and you're like, okay, they're in there.
- 31:28Speaker 10: Yeah, thickets, maybe some grasses, maybe points where the sun
- 31:31Speaker 10: hits the first thing in the day kind of stuff that.
- 31:35Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 31:36Speaker 10: Yeah, that and deer poop. Honestly, collections of deer poop,
- 31:38Speaker 10: collections of beds, that kind of thing.
- 31:41Speaker 3: So you spent some time hunting scrapes. How effective was that?
- 31:46Speaker 10: Ooh? So I had multiple hunts where I had doze
- 31:51Speaker 10: come in bebop the scrape even at like eleven noon,
- 31:55Speaker 10: and one time it was like gray lightish, and I'm like, okay,
- 31:58Speaker 10: I know what should happen the next twelve twenty four hours,
- 32:00Speaker 10: and I'd see some two and a half year olds.
- 32:02Speaker 10: I just didn't have a shooter kind of follow that
- 32:04Speaker 10: dough or read the script my trail cams told me.
- 32:07Speaker 10: I hunted scrapes on wrong days if you will.
- 32:10Speaker 2: I did the same thing last week. Man, it just
- 32:11Speaker 2: hurts down deep inside.
- 32:14Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah.
- 32:15Speaker 10: One of my best encounters was on a scrape that
- 32:17Speaker 10: was the sixth sense buck where he came over this
- 32:20Speaker 10: like bluffy point and he's looking over this bottom for
- 32:23Speaker 10: what felt like forever, and yep, he just said, I'm
- 32:25Speaker 10: not going to go down to that scrape today and
- 32:26Speaker 10: he's fifty yards from it.
- 32:28Speaker 4: So in the next week or so, would you still
- 32:30Speaker 4: focus on some of the things were we were focused
- 32:33Speaker 4: on this week, so like dough betting and maybe scrapes,
- 32:37Speaker 4: or would you take what you learned this past week
- 32:39Speaker 4: and apply it to next week and change things up.
- 32:43Speaker 10: The final week of November, I'm going to go a
- 32:45Speaker 10: little bit more heavy terrain pinch type hunts, where like
- 32:49Speaker 10: I just want to collect giglines of movement, and then
- 32:52Speaker 10: I would still hunt scrapes. I get a lot of
- 32:54Speaker 10: pictures of you know, bucks recirculating their little circuit and
- 32:57Speaker 10: they got to figure out where the doose are that
- 32:59Speaker 10: are still high or about the pop and so I
- 33:02Speaker 10: was still hunting scrapes, but maybe a little bit more
- 33:04Speaker 10: emphasis on the best hogbacks point of the whole Mountain.
- 33:08Speaker 3: Yeah, that's good stuff, man.
- 33:10Speaker 2: So if you had rate the upcoming week on a
- 33:13Speaker 2: scale of one to ten on buck movie, what would
- 33:15Speaker 2: you call it.
- 33:16Speaker 10: I'm still gonna go seven seven point five. We got
- 33:20Speaker 10: one warm day, but I'm still pretty high for the scale.
- 33:23Speaker 3: We're getting some decimals this week. We got that's cool.
- 33:26Speaker 2: Yeah, and dude, seven seven point five is a good number, man.
- 33:29Speaker 2: So it's still a good time to be in the
- 33:30Speaker 2: woods in Ohio. Byron, We appreciate the report.
- 33:33Speaker 10: Man, absolutely both.
- 33:36Speaker 3: This is Eric Gentry.
- 33:38Speaker 4: He's also known as Oklahoma Gentry because he's been out
- 33:40Speaker 4: in Oklahoma doing some hunting.
- 33:42Speaker 3: Eric. What are you doing man, Man?
- 33:44Speaker 6: Just driving up to Illinois to see some family for Thanksgiving?
- 33:48Speaker 3: Eric with the element Eric? Ye? Sweet?
- 33:51Speaker 4: So Eric's Eric's going to Illinois. He might have Illinois
- 33:53Speaker 4: report for us next week, but he's got Oklahoma one
- 33:55Speaker 4: this week. After eating Thanksgiving noodles this case. So apparently
- 34:02Speaker 4: Thanksgiving noodles are a thing, but we don't know what
- 34:04Speaker 4: they are. Eric does, and I think some of the
- 34:06Speaker 4: more heart of the Midwestern people might understand it, but yeah,
- 34:09Speaker 4: some will. Yeah, there's something about it with cream and
- 34:13Speaker 4: chicken on top. That's what I think it is.
- 34:15Speaker 2: No, so enough of the culinary experience here at the Midwest. Eric,
- 34:22Speaker 2: you hunted kind of the west, just you know, west
- 34:25Speaker 2: of the Midwest.
- 34:26Speaker 3: I guess you'd say in Oklahoma this past week.
- 34:29Speaker 2: I might have seen you there, but we wanted to
- 34:32Speaker 2: get your take because you actually had some action.
- 34:36Speaker 3: Did you do you feel like you had a good hunt? Man?
- 34:39Speaker 5: It was I don't know. It was tough.
- 34:41Speaker 6: The first time ever got a tag there and it
- 34:45Speaker 6: was some of the toughest hunting I've done. There's just
- 34:48Speaker 6: not a lot of public land. Uh, there's a big
- 34:51Speaker 6: deer being killed on private but I mean there's a
- 34:54Speaker 6: lot of hunters around, and I don't know if there
- 34:56Speaker 6: was the warm weather and a combination of a lockdown,
- 35:00Speaker 6: but it was tough.
- 35:02Speaker 3: I had to lock down.
- 35:04Speaker 5: Well.
- 35:04Speaker 6: One morning I had a pretty good buck encounter, but
- 35:08Speaker 6: he was lockdown with the dough and he would not
- 35:11Speaker 6: leave that dough side anything she was doing, he was doing.
- 35:14Speaker 3: Did you try to think sixty nine or what? No.
- 35:19Speaker 6: I tried the old snort weez but that that didn't work. Yeah,
- 35:22Speaker 6: it got her attention and she kind of stared around
- 35:25Speaker 6: for at least an hour and.
- 35:29Speaker 3: How are you making your moves up?
- 35:30Speaker 2: There? Was it off of trail camera data or like
- 35:32Speaker 2: the stuff you were seeing or what was going on?
- 35:35Speaker 6: Yeah, we were watching the trail cameras and kind of
- 35:38Speaker 6: deciding what we want to do. We were hunting bed
- 35:41Speaker 6: to feed patterns because we cameras just weren't giving us
- 35:44Speaker 6: a lot of data and a lot of the pictures
- 35:46Speaker 6: were at night, so it was really tough.
- 35:48Speaker 4: Yeah, case you hunted a near a scrape though at
- 35:51Speaker 4: one point, right, how'd that pan out?
- 35:53Speaker 2: Well, it was like a thing where I feel like
- 35:56Speaker 2: the lockdown was going on, like Eric says, and the
- 36:00Speaker 2: like bucks will come off dose and they'll move through,
- 36:01Speaker 2: maybe hit a scrape or two. And uh, the one
- 36:04Speaker 2: day we weren't on the scrape, a buck came through
- 36:07Speaker 2: that I would have shot, and then after that it
- 36:08Speaker 2: was just nothing.
- 36:09Speaker 4: So would y'all both agree pretty unpredictable movement? Yeah, man, absolute, Like,
- 36:15Speaker 4: if you think about it, this time of year can
- 36:18Speaker 4: be awesome. It's a feast or famine deal. Right, it's
- 36:20Speaker 4: Eric either eating a bunch of pizza because they're killing.
- 36:22Speaker 10: Deer or.
- 36:25Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly getting ready for Thanksgiving, you know, but it's
- 36:29Speaker 4: it is It's like you you might sit there and
- 36:32Speaker 4: not see anything because you got a bunch of duck
- 36:33Speaker 4: bucks that are locked down in an area, and then
- 36:35Speaker 4: all of a sudden, if you're sitting at the right
- 36:37Speaker 4: scrape or you're sitting in the right you know, uh,
- 36:39Speaker 4: you know. Or if a deer wants to act like
- 36:42Speaker 4: he wants to be on public land for a little
- 36:44Speaker 4: bit instead of private land like, then it could be
- 36:46Speaker 4: one of the.
- 36:47Speaker 3: Best days of your life. What do you think the
- 36:48Speaker 3: limiting factor was this past week, Eric Man, I don't know.
- 36:55Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 36:58Speaker 6: It's tough to say. Really, I couldn't tell you. It
- 37:01Speaker 6: was my first time hunting Oklahoma.
- 37:02Speaker 3: So you think that really cooler temperatures would help.
- 37:06Speaker 5: Yeah, I think so. I think.
- 37:09Speaker 6: I think they're gonna come out of this lockdown phase
- 37:12Speaker 6: and potentially hit scrapes again, and so you might be
- 37:16Speaker 6: able to see in a little bit better movement here
- 37:18Speaker 6: which week or so.
- 37:19Speaker 3: I don't look at Elon's weather app like you.
- 37:21Speaker 2: Do, but I do have a fairly reliable one.
- 37:24Speaker 8: Tyler's on it now, Oh is he?
- 37:27Speaker 3: Oh it's pretty. It's just mainly the graphics are cool teslas.
- 37:35Speaker 3: So I have been looking.
- 37:37Speaker 2: I just you know, I'm old school, right, kind of
- 37:39Speaker 2: boomer ish, you know, it's boomer center state right. Definitely
- 37:44Speaker 2: look at the weather Channel app and it's all it
- 37:47Speaker 2: always does me, right, you know. And it seems as
- 37:49Speaker 2: if we have a cold front rolling through parts of
- 37:54Speaker 2: the central US, including Oklahoma. What you think that's gonna
- 37:59Speaker 2: change what you could see in daytime?
- 38:01Speaker 5: Yeah? I think so.
- 38:02Speaker 6: I think, Like I said, I think they're gonna once
- 38:05Speaker 6: the cooler tens hit, he might hit the scrapes again
- 38:07Speaker 6: and start looking for another dough.
- 38:09Speaker 4: Cool so on a scale of one to ten, and
- 38:12Speaker 4: then next week.
- 38:14Speaker 6: I'd hate to give that typical Midwest answer.
- 38:17Speaker 3: You know, they'll do it. They'll be good, could be bad.
- 38:22Speaker 6: But I'd honestly probably give it a six.
- 38:27Speaker 5: He did it.
- 38:28Speaker 3: He did it. He's in the Midwest. That's why I
- 38:30Speaker 3: did it, dude.
- 38:31Speaker 8: That's right.
- 38:31Speaker 3: I'm still here in Texas to be a seven or
- 38:33Speaker 3: eight probably.
- 38:34Speaker 6: I'm telling you right now, though here in Illinois, like
- 38:36Speaker 6: it is going crazy. As soon as I cross the Mississippi,
- 38:39Speaker 6: there's deer in the fields at noon twelve thirty and
- 38:42Speaker 6: as I'm sitting here, I'm on a busy road, right
- 38:46Speaker 6: now and like there's at least twenty cars on this road.
- 38:49Speaker 6: Give you an idea of how busy it is. And
- 38:51Speaker 6: there's a small patch of woods across from me. And
- 38:54Speaker 6: like literally five seconds ago, a doe is running down the.
- 38:57Speaker 5: Side of the road.
- 38:57Speaker 3: Ooh man, but head to leave Texas. That's right, you know, Well, doe.
- 39:05Speaker 2: Hope you have a marry Thanksgiving. If that's what people say,
- 39:07Speaker 2: I don't know. Very thankful Thanksgiving or thankful to have
- 39:09Speaker 2: you in our lives. And thank you for the report.
- 39:11Speaker 5: Sir, appreciate it.
- 39:13Speaker 2: Thanks guys closed it out with the Midwest six from
- 39:17Speaker 2: Eric Gentry.
- 39:18Speaker 3: How about that?
- 39:18Speaker 2: But including that some pretty positive reports from around the
- 39:23Speaker 2: country for deer movement. Man, I think that people are
- 39:26Speaker 2: catching on like this is a good time of year
- 39:27Speaker 2: to kill a big deer. You say that all the time.
- 39:29Speaker 2: Thanksgiving week is like the time.
- 39:30Speaker 3: Huh, that's what I mean.
- 39:32Speaker 4: I've had some really good hunts around that time of year,
- 39:33Speaker 4: and I remember I had a long hunt one time.
- 39:36Speaker 4: I may have talked about this last week, but you know,
- 39:39Speaker 4: we went from the Thanksgiving time period late Thanksgiving into December.
- 39:43Speaker 4: When I shot a deer early December. That was falling
- 39:46Speaker 4: a big mature dough. So, I mean, it's just one
- 39:48Speaker 4: of those things, men, where I just don't I think
- 39:50Speaker 4: people give up hope really easy a lot of times
- 39:52Speaker 4: when you know there's still a lot of good hunting
- 39:55Speaker 4: to be had out there right now, especially with cold
- 39:56Speaker 4: weather coming in.
- 39:57Speaker 2: Guarantee you, man, I don't want to minimize this part
- 40:01Speaker 2: of this time of year.
- 40:02Speaker 3: It's a great time to reflect. It's a great time
- 40:04Speaker 3: to be thankful.
- 40:05Speaker 2: It's a good time to focus on your family and
- 40:07Speaker 2: your faith and to consider all the blessings you have
- 40:11Speaker 2: in life, right, because that's what this is about. That
- 40:15Speaker 2: being said, it is a good time of year to
- 40:17Speaker 2: get some good stuff on a good deal. Black Friday's
- 40:20Speaker 2: around the corner by your family that you love, some
- 40:23Speaker 2: Christmas gifts. Go over to the media website and get
- 40:27Speaker 2: all the kind of stuff that you want to from
- 40:28Speaker 2: that kind of deal. If you want to get a
- 40:31Speaker 2: little bit more hunting encouragement, there is a new video
- 40:36Speaker 2: on the Element channel. We'll link to the channel below.
- 40:39Speaker 2: You can go watch me chase a buck around on
- 40:42Speaker 2: the ground for dude. Literally, I was on this buck
- 40:46Speaker 2: for the whole day and then half of another day
- 40:51Speaker 2: like inside of this year, it was wild.
- 40:54Speaker 4: That's all I'm gonna tell y'all. Yeah, So there's lots
- 40:57Speaker 4: of stuff though coming out. We've been putting trying to
- 40:59Speaker 4: crank out some video. We've got some Texas public Land stuff.
- 41:02Speaker 4: We've got you know, Nebraska stuff from earlier this year.
- 41:06Speaker 4: We've been just kind of trying to crank that stuff
- 41:07Speaker 4: as much as possible. In between case. You actually have
- 41:12Speaker 4: an article about saddle hunting, doesn't you.
- 41:14Speaker 3: I do.
- 41:14Speaker 2: There's an article on the media website about should you
- 41:19Speaker 2: hunt from a saddle?
- 41:20Speaker 3: Go check that out.
- 41:21Speaker 2: There's a pretty funny social media post that Tyler and
- 41:24Speaker 2: I put out there because humor is what makes this
- 41:26Speaker 2: world go around right now, man, because there's a lot
- 41:29Speaker 2: of depressing things.
- 41:30Speaker 3: We like to be funny.
- 41:30Speaker 6: Sure.
- 41:31Speaker 2: But and then there's a video that goes along with
- 41:33Speaker 2: that about shooting from a saddle and why you should
- 41:36Speaker 2: maybe consider it.
- 41:37Speaker 3: Go check that out if you haven't.
- 41:39Speaker 4: Yep, for sure, guys, thanks for listening. This has been
- 41:41Speaker 4: ret fresh, Keep it fresh.
