- 1:51Speaker 1: In this episode of Disguise Coverage, we are going to
- 1:56Speaker 1: talk about the Buffalo Bills run defense. I you know,
- 2:01Speaker 1: full transparency and peek behind the curtain. I debated doing
- 2:04Speaker 1: some film in this episode because this is an issue
- 2:06Speaker 1: that is very near and dear to my heart. But
- 2:09Speaker 1: with the short week the Bill's playing, you know, this
- 2:12Speaker 1: episode being live on a Tuesday night, the Bill's playing
- 2:14Speaker 1: on Thursday night this week, I thought it wasn't necessarily
- 2:19Speaker 1: going to be consumed in the way that it needed
- 2:20Speaker 1: to be, and so I decided against that. But we're
- 2:23Speaker 1: still gonna have a high level and deep dived, detailed
- 2:25Speaker 1: discussion on the Buffalo Bills run defense. And like I
- 2:29Speaker 1: alluded to, this is an issue that is near and
- 2:32Speaker 1: dear to my heart. It's something I talked about throughout
- 2:36Speaker 1: the offseason as being a potential pain point or worry
- 2:39Speaker 1: point for the Buffalo Bills this year, not just for
- 2:41Speaker 1: the defense but for the team in general. And I
- 2:44Speaker 1: know there's some injuries which we're gonna talk about a
- 2:46Speaker 1: bit in this episode, but you see their performance throughout
- 2:50Speaker 1: this year from a from a metrics standpoint, it's very bad.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Especially when you're looking at specific metrics. They are historically
- 2:57Speaker 1: bad going back to the last like you know, eight
- 2:59Speaker 1: now nine seasons that have been played, and kind of
- 3:02Speaker 1: this era of football especially, you look at the tape
- 3:05Speaker 1: and you are seeing issues schematically individual actually, yeah, issues individually,
- 3:12Speaker 1: and it's something that plagued this team last year. But
- 3:17Speaker 1: I think largely went not overlooked or unnoticed, but I
- 3:22Speaker 1: think glossed over because the turnovers that they were getting
- 3:25Speaker 1: made a big difference, the wins that they were getting
- 3:28Speaker 1: were making a big difference. The negative plays, not just
- 3:30Speaker 1: the turnovers, the negative plays, you know, tackles for loss, stuffs,
- 3:34Speaker 1: all of that that they were creating. I think kind
- 3:36Speaker 1: of glossed over it. And it was a bit of
- 3:39Speaker 1: a talking point this offseason. You know, I think a
- 3:41Speaker 1: lot of folks were getting onto that bandwagon of you know,
- 3:45Speaker 1: let's get a one tech, let's get a big body inside.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Let's get more space eaters or pluggers or huge guys
- 3:51Speaker 1: on the inside, you know, more Ted Washington, Pat Williams types,
- 3:54Speaker 1: Sam Adams types like guys of yesteryear. But the Bills
- 3:58Speaker 1: did not do that that's something we're gonna talk about
- 4:00Speaker 1: in this episode. And yeah, so that's something I wanted
- 4:03Speaker 1: to focus on and kind of set the table with.
- 4:05Speaker 1: And in this episode, we're really going to focus on
- 4:07Speaker 1: several things on you know, kind of what is plaguing
- 4:12Speaker 1: the Buffalo Bills run defense this season. We are going
- 4:16Speaker 1: to talk about, you know, who's still playing well in
- 4:19Speaker 1: that regard, who is not, and what's going wrong. We're
- 4:22Speaker 1: going to talk about potential improvements that they can do
- 4:25Speaker 1: down the stretch and potential problems that they could face
- 4:29Speaker 1: in terms of teams come playoff time given their struggles
- 4:32Speaker 1: from a run defense standpoint, And we're going to kind
- 4:35Speaker 1: of frame all that within a larger discussion of you know,
- 4:40Speaker 1: good teams quote unquote super Bowl winners, what run defense
- 4:43Speaker 1: has looked like historically for Super Bowl winners to pass
- 4:46Speaker 1: the you know, more than several years. Yeah, so a
- 4:49Speaker 1: good chunk to dive into tonight in this episode on
- 4:51Speaker 1: this short week for the Bills. As always, questions, thoughts, comments, concerns,
- 4:55Speaker 1: philosophy's ideologies, Maxim's theorems, whatever you folks got, feel free
- 5:00Speaker 1: put it up into the live chat as we go
- 5:02Speaker 1: forward in this episode I will try to bring up
- 5:04Speaker 1: anything and everything as much as humanly possible. As always,
- 5:06Speaker 1: super chats get priority because I respect the monetary donation,
- 5:09Speaker 1: and the color distracts me and takes me away from
- 5:13Speaker 1: my notes. Cay Moury, what's up? Kay morriy Ka Moury says,
- 5:17Speaker 1: if cam Scadboo decides to play for the Bills next
- 5:19Speaker 1: opponent with his dislocated ankle, I'm pretty sure he could
- 5:22Speaker 1: go for one hundred and fifty yards. Yeah, the the
- 5:24Speaker 1: run defense has been gouged. They've been gashed. You've seen
- 5:27Speaker 1: an increase in stuff rate the past couple of weeks,
- 5:29Speaker 1: and even the game against the Bucks. You know, you
- 5:31Speaker 1: go back and watch the tape and they had some
- 5:32Speaker 1: stops for you know, negative yardage or for you know,
- 5:35Speaker 1: zero yards, so traditional stuffs or some runs that were
- 5:37Speaker 1: for one, two, three yards. But on the whole he
- 5:41Speaker 1: had pretty gashed. Not ideal, even to the point with
- 5:45Speaker 1: Tampa Bay. I know you can I said this during
- 5:47Speaker 1: the game, like you can't silo yourself on purpose. And
- 5:50Speaker 1: Baker Mayfield, you know, is a good quarterback and they've
- 5:52Speaker 1: got some weapons, even with Mike Evans being banged up,
- 5:54Speaker 1: and god would not being in there or McMillan being
- 5:57Speaker 1: in there. They've still got Abuca and Shepherd to have
- 6:00Speaker 1: a fun year. Kate Otton can do some stuff even
- 6:02Speaker 1: without Boockey irving as well. So you know, I know
- 6:05Speaker 1: their past game isn't necessarily what it was, and you
- 6:07Speaker 1: don't want to silo yourself, but I said it during
- 6:10Speaker 1: the game against the Bucks, like, I don't know why
- 6:11Speaker 1: you're doing anything other than just running the football at
- 6:15Speaker 1: the bills over and over again, right down Main Street,
- 6:17Speaker 1: keep it right at their spine. They were getting displacement,
- 6:20Speaker 1: they were getting movement. They were getting it out of
- 6:22Speaker 1: eleven personnel. They were getting it out of heavy personnel,
- 6:25Speaker 1: condensed formations, some spread stuff. They were moving and grooving
- 6:29Speaker 1: and people moving, dudes all over the bills front. And yeah,
- 6:34Speaker 1: I don't know why Tampa bayd it. Literally I would
- 6:35Speaker 1: have just kept running the ball even if you got
- 6:37Speaker 1: stopped for like all one or two yards and second
- 6:39Speaker 1: and eight, I'd run the ball again and then run
- 6:40Speaker 1: the ball on third down. With the success they were having,
- 6:42Speaker 1: it was, it was worrisome at various points. William In
- 6:48Speaker 1: early with the first fire, McDermott comment of the evening
- 6:51Speaker 1: fair you know, kudos to you, William. This comment here
- 6:56Speaker 1: is let's convert key onto safety. You know, it's funny
- 6:58Speaker 1: in like a joke world. I get, you know, not
- 7:00Speaker 1: even in a joke world. I kind of want to
- 7:02Speaker 1: see it happen. It's just so hard and relatively impossible.
- 7:05Speaker 1: But you know, I oh, William comes in and says,
- 7:08Speaker 1: I'm joking about fire mc dermct fairth thank you for
- 7:10Speaker 1: that clarification. I don't know in this day and age
- 7:13Speaker 1: and in this environment anymore, I don't know who's serious
- 7:17Speaker 1: and who's not. So I appreciate that William Williams say
- 7:19Speaker 1: I'm joking about fire McDermott. But I am curious about
- 7:22Speaker 1: the use of Sanders at defensive end. I didn't think
- 7:24Speaker 1: he had that flexibility and was better inside. I don't
- 7:27Speaker 1: think he showed much at defensive end. That kind of
- 7:32Speaker 1: made you go OK. Granted it was Let me backtrack.
- 7:35Speaker 1: He's been hurt this year, he hasn't had a lot
- 7:38Speaker 1: of time on task. He still needs to adjust to
- 7:40Speaker 1: the game at the NFL level, and now he got
- 7:42Speaker 1: put into essentially a position that he's never really played
- 7:45Speaker 1: from a lot of experience standpoint, especially in the NFL,
- 7:47Speaker 1: so he's learning it on the fly while learning to
- 7:50Speaker 1: play in the NFL on the fly. So I'm not expecting,
- 7:53Speaker 1: you know, a tremendous return on that investment by putting
- 7:56Speaker 1: him at edge early on. But from the tape, I
- 7:59Speaker 1: think it was just, I don't want to say forgettable performance,
- 8:01Speaker 1: but not one that you were like, you know what,
- 8:04Speaker 1: they may have something here, you know what he could
- 8:06Speaker 1: really be an answer here. I think it was more
- 8:09Speaker 1: just putting him in there on rundowns and trying to
- 8:12Speaker 1: stem the bleeding a little bit that was happening upfront
- 8:14Speaker 1: and figured out if they maybe had something I don't.
- 8:17Speaker 1: I wouldn't necessarily say he has that flexibility. I think
- 8:20Speaker 1: it was more out of necessity than it was out
- 8:23Speaker 1: of man, we think this will give us, you know,
- 8:26Speaker 1: some looks we want or some production that we want.
- 8:28Speaker 1: I think it's more due to, you know, some things
- 8:30Speaker 1: that are happening up front. But I don't think it
- 8:33Speaker 1: was a complete vulnerability there. But nothing that was really
- 8:35Speaker 1: stand out to make you say, yes, let's hang your
- 8:37Speaker 1: hat on that and let him work there going forward.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Charles says, what's good ant the college football playoffs? Screwing
- 8:44Speaker 1: over the Canes. What's up with that? I don't know.
- 8:46Speaker 1: My I don't wouldn't say Miami's necessarily getting screwed. I
- 8:48Speaker 1: will say this the one issue I do haven't. It's
- 8:50Speaker 1: all depending upon when you lose, and I know Miami
- 8:52Speaker 1: hasn't looked strong over the past several weeks. Notre Dame
- 8:56Speaker 1: being ahead of them, considering they have the same losses,
- 8:59Speaker 1: the same amount of lasses, and the fact that Miami
- 9:01Speaker 1: beat Notre Dame, Miami should be I'm going to continue
- 9:04Speaker 1: to stop, stop the table or bang the drum, bang
- 9:06Speaker 1: the table for that Miami should be ahead of Notre Dame.
- 9:08Speaker 1: I'm not saying that as a Miami fan and or
- 9:10Speaker 1: as a person who hates Notre Dame. Miami should be
- 9:13Speaker 1: ahead of Notre Dame. They have They're same in the
- 9:15Speaker 1: lost column. Miami's had some really good victories. The best
- 9:18Speaker 1: teams Notre Dame has played they've lost to. So I
- 9:21Speaker 1: would put Miami ahead of Notre Dame. But I don't
- 9:23Speaker 1: think the Kanes are getting screwed. They've shown some real
- 9:25Speaker 1: vulnerabilities on the offensive side of the ball. Beck has
- 9:28Speaker 1: been real ugly at times, and Dawson's offense has died
- 9:32Speaker 1: left and right at times this year, and then with
- 9:35Speaker 1: Louisville lose in that loss looks worse on their resume,
- 9:39Speaker 1: But if they went out, I think there's some chances
- 9:42Speaker 1: that the teams ahead of them lose, and I think
- 9:44Speaker 1: they can sneak into the playoff and then you'll kind
- 9:46Speaker 1: of see what happens from there. Bob in the chat
- 9:49Speaker 1: what's Up, Bob Pops says contained the Edge, Philia Philly Assessminarss.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Some of the young players showing up has been a
- 9:57Speaker 1: huge plus. Walker and Bishop especially. Yeah, I think the
- 9:59Speaker 1: flashes you're getting from Walker, you know, really since the
- 10:02Speaker 1: beginning of the year. I think there's still some of
- 10:04Speaker 1: the dips in his play that aren't really getting discussed
- 10:07Speaker 1: too much, but I think his play has been really
- 10:11Speaker 1: encouraging with the flashes you're seeing, and I do think
- 10:14Speaker 1: he's getting better each week from a you know, from
- 10:16Speaker 1: a valley standpoint, you're seeing those peaks. I think he's
- 10:18Speaker 1: starting to raise his floor a little bit and improve
- 10:21Speaker 1: his game, which is nice to see for Dion. Walker
- 10:23Speaker 1: and Yeah, cool Bishop making splash plays, getting some turnovers,
- 10:27Speaker 1: making some good plays and coverage. I think he's starting
- 10:30Speaker 1: to really excel more in and around the box, which
- 10:32Speaker 1: he was already best suited for. But he's also starting
- 10:34Speaker 1: to make some plays the deeper he gets from the
- 10:36Speaker 1: line of scrimmage, some good angles to the ball, some
- 10:39Speaker 1: good plays and coverage. Well, how he's processing in terms of,
- 10:43Speaker 1: you know, the timing and the accuracy, you know what
- 10:45Speaker 1: he's seeing when he's seeing it, using his eyes, allowing
- 10:49Speaker 1: his athleticism to translate and play on the field because
- 10:52Speaker 1: of how he's playing from the neck up really encouraging.
- 10:55Speaker 1: I'm not on the bandwagon of you know, Bishop's been
- 10:58Speaker 1: playing at this all pro level and all of a sudden,
- 11:00Speaker 1: a God send. I would like him to clean up
- 11:02Speaker 1: still some of his angles to the ball and some
- 11:04Speaker 1: of his decisions in coverage, but it's hard to not
- 11:07Speaker 1: be excited, and it's also hard to kind of not
- 11:10Speaker 1: sit there and be like, man, I wonder where he
- 11:13Speaker 1: could be right now if he had had even more
- 11:16Speaker 1: time on task as a rookie. You know, where would
- 11:17Speaker 1: he be right now in season two as he's made
- 11:20Speaker 1: this kind of steady improvement week over week, especially once
- 11:23Speaker 1: Jordan Poyer got into the lineup, or should I say
- 11:25Speaker 1: once Unfortunately, once Taylor rap exited the lineup him, you know,
- 11:30Speaker 1: raising his game up. I think the film study's paying off,
- 11:32Speaker 1: as he's talked about impressors and got rewarded by being
- 11:36Speaker 1: in the right place at the right time with that
- 11:38Speaker 1: interception against Tampa. Even though he talked about if Tampa
- 11:40Speaker 1: gamed him up, him and Tren they got picked, they
- 11:43Speaker 1: got ran into each other. Baker just kind of made
- 11:46Speaker 1: an air and throw. But hey man, better lucky than
- 11:49Speaker 1: good be in the right place at the right time,
- 11:50Speaker 1: like Bishop said. And yeah, he continues to showcase his athleticism, physicality.
- 11:55Speaker 1: It's been really nice to see, especially with questions about
- 11:58Speaker 1: the other safety position going forward. You know, now you
- 12:00Speaker 1: can maybe go into the off season think, okay, is
- 12:03Speaker 1: Handcock the answer or is it someone else? Instead of
- 12:05Speaker 1: having essentially two holes at the safety spot, It's been nice,
- 12:10Speaker 1: Gary says, Aunt mcdee doesn't like one tex He likes
- 12:12Speaker 1: finesse lineman who can drop into coverage and if need
- 12:15Speaker 1: be fair, my I'm not gonna argue with this. My
- 12:19Speaker 1: question that I've kind of raised to myself a bit
- 12:23Speaker 1: is how much and not indicative of anything, but how
- 12:28Speaker 1: much are being in McDermott on the same page. When
- 12:30Speaker 1: it comes to building out the roster, especially on the
- 12:33Speaker 1: defensive side of the ball. I'm always under the assumption
- 12:36Speaker 1: that they're pretty much in lockstep with where they come from,
- 12:40Speaker 1: what we've seen traditionally for this team. Sorry that headrest
- 12:43Speaker 1: is the straightest drive me nuts. There we go what
- 12:45Speaker 1: we've seen traditionally and historically from them. But I don't
- 12:49Speaker 1: think it's just a McDermott thing. I think Bean is
- 12:52Speaker 1: very much in lockstep with that. He talked about it.
- 12:54Speaker 1: I think after Night two of the draft when they
- 12:55Speaker 1: took T. J. Sanders, he talked about, you know, preferring
- 12:58Speaker 1: inside rush on the interior, it's harder to get inside
- 13:01Speaker 1: rush guys. It's easier to get bigger bodied guys or
- 13:04Speaker 1: not as expensive to get bigger bodied, you know, kind
- 13:06Speaker 1: of run stuffers. He actually the archetype they go for,
- 13:10Speaker 1: which we are going to talk about, RJ. What's up
- 13:15Speaker 1: r J? RJ says, it's so difficult to figure out
- 13:17Speaker 1: how good this defense is. They have more injuries than
- 13:19Speaker 1: the forty nine ers. How can you evaluate anything when
- 13:22Speaker 1: everyone not named Walker or Groot is dealing with injuries.
- 13:25Speaker 1: I mean, even at that point, though, Groot was dealing
- 13:27Speaker 1: with injuries to start the year. His first what three
- 13:29Speaker 1: four games, He's dealing with that bone bruise, and then
- 13:31Speaker 1: he started to get a little healthier, play a little better.
- 13:34Speaker 1: It throws a significant wrench in it. I've talked about
- 13:36Speaker 1: it in almost every episode, like which makes this whole
- 13:39Speaker 1: evaluation even more frustrating because you're trying to figure out
- 13:42Speaker 1: where they need to go going forward. This past offseason.
- 13:46Speaker 1: They invested so much in the defense from a free
- 13:47Speaker 1: agency standpoint, from a draft resources standpoint, and then you
- 13:50Speaker 1: get all these injuries, so you can easily play Devil's
- 13:53Speaker 1: advocate and sit there and go like, yeah, but do
- 13:56Speaker 1: they need to change anything? Maybe things would have really
- 13:58Speaker 1: worked out if they were healthy, YadA YadA. Yeah, it's
- 14:00Speaker 1: it's it's super super super super super frustrating. Jason says,
- 14:07Speaker 1: Bill's GM Brandon being completely devalues the important slash impact
- 14:10Speaker 1: of a true wide receiver one his anti wide receiver
- 14:13Speaker 1: philosophy is killing Josh Allen and the Bills. I don't
- 14:16Speaker 1: think he necessarily has an anti or an anti wide
- 14:18Speaker 1: receiver philosophy. I do think they pivoted the direction of
- 14:22Speaker 1: the offense two, more of a run focused, condensed formations,
- 14:26Speaker 1: bigger body types of wide receiver in an effort to
- 14:29Speaker 1: you know, block marry some of the run in the past,
- 14:32Speaker 1: and kind of lean into more trends league wide than
- 14:35Speaker 1: a lot of the better offenses and best offensive minds
- 14:38Speaker 1: were leaning towards. I don't think he devalues the importance
- 14:42Speaker 1: of a true wide receiver one. I think they moved
- 14:44Speaker 1: into into a direction philosophically as an offense that paid
- 14:48Speaker 1: huge dividends last year, and they chose to just address
- 14:52Speaker 1: other issues on this team which were glaring as well
- 14:56Speaker 1: versus the wide receiver spot. And I don't just agree
- 15:00Speaker 1: on the lack of sexiness at the position. And I
- 15:02Speaker 1: do think having a high end two or a true one,
- 15:05Speaker 1: even if it's a low end one, would make a
- 15:07Speaker 1: difference for this team, especially based on certain skill set
- 15:10Speaker 1: pieces or traits that that receiver could have. But I
- 15:12Speaker 1: don't think he's an He's got an anti wide receiver philosophy.
- 15:16Speaker 1: I mean, even so, we're kind of reading the tea
- 15:17Speaker 1: leaves too. They may or may not have picked key
- 15:20Speaker 1: On Coleman because Josh Allen wanted key On Coleman, so
- 15:24Speaker 1: Josh maybe takes some blame there as well for the
- 15:27Speaker 1: type of receiver that he wanted, but I understand the sentiment. Oh,
- 15:33Speaker 1: what a question here. What do you think is the
- 15:35Speaker 1: best eleven man combination on this team that would fare
- 15:38Speaker 1: the best against the run on early downs? Wow, Taron
- 15:44Speaker 1: Johnson's playing rough. So part of me wants to say
- 15:48Speaker 1: base personnel, three linebackers, and then it would be, uh,
- 15:53Speaker 1: Bernard has been playing better, but he's still hurt. I'd
- 15:55Speaker 1: probably say Milano Shack and Dorian or Milano Shack and
- 15:58Speaker 1: Bernard at the linebacker spot. And then on the defensive line,
- 16:05Speaker 1: I would take Epanessa and Rousseau at edge, and day
- 16:10Speaker 1: Kwan and Dion Walker on the interior. So yeah, I
- 16:15Speaker 1: play bass. I'm getting Shaq Thompson in there. If Bernard
- 16:18Speaker 1: is healthy, Bernard's out there too. But I'm weighing this
- 16:22Speaker 1: as if or playing this as if Bernard is banged up,
- 16:24Speaker 1: which he still is. So yeah either sche so so Epanessa, Epessa,
- 16:32Speaker 1: day Kwon, Walker, Groot, Bernard or Dorian. If Bernard was healthy,
- 16:37Speaker 1: would be Bernard, but Bernard or Dorian, Shaq, Milano, Benford Poyer,
- 16:47Speaker 1: Bishop Trey White, m. Jeffrey. Good question here, is Milana
- 16:56Speaker 1: a problem and is Shack better right now with healthy
- 16:58Speaker 1: I'll answer this kind of with a Liankett statement. Shack Thompson.
- 17:02Speaker 1: I keep wanting to say lost in Shack Thompson has
- 17:04Speaker 1: been and in m I believe is right now still
- 17:07Speaker 1: the best linebacker on the Buffalo Bills. A good chunk
- 17:10Speaker 1: of that is because Terrel Bernard is hurt. You can
- 17:12Speaker 1: tell he's laboring. I'm interested to see what Bernard looks
- 17:16Speaker 1: like next year when he's healthier in terms of how
- 17:19Speaker 1: he's playing. I think he had a better game versus
- 17:21Speaker 1: Tampa then he had the past several weeks. Nice to
- 17:23Speaker 1: see him improving a little bit as he maybe gets
- 17:25Speaker 1: a little healthier. I think Shack is the best linebacker
- 17:28Speaker 1: on the Buffalo Bills right now. I think Shack should
- 17:32Speaker 1: be starting for Bernard so Bernard can get as close
- 17:36Speaker 1: to one hundred percent as possible for down the stretch.
- 17:40Speaker 1: I don't think Mlino is necessarily a problem. I don't
- 17:43Speaker 1: think he's playing to the All Pro level he was
- 17:45Speaker 1: before the injuries. You know, the several years ago, when
- 17:48Speaker 1: was he in All Pro twenty twenty two? I think
- 17:49Speaker 1: twenty twenty three. I think twenty twenty two, Yeah, twenty
- 17:52Speaker 1: twenty two. I don't think he's playing to that level.
- 17:54Speaker 1: But he's had some better plays in coverage, stuff that
- 17:57Speaker 1: won't show up on the stat sheet, and some plays
- 17:59Speaker 1: against the run that I think he's getting credit for.
- 18:02Speaker 1: But the whole front has been an issue in some way,
- 18:07Speaker 1: shape or form. But I don't I wouldn't necessarily say
- 18:10Speaker 1: mlone's a problem, but he's not necessarily playing the level
- 18:14Speaker 1: they need him to.
- 18:16Speaker 3: M m mmmmm mmmmm.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Lots of uh Bob saying does Bosa think he has
- 18:26Speaker 1: help when he rushes, seems to ignore setting the edge
- 18:28Speaker 1: and gets burned. I'm guessing the go and that little
- 18:33Speaker 1: the shamrock symbolayers for Notre Dame, how dare you? I
- 18:37Speaker 1: think some of it is bos to taking chances and
- 18:39Speaker 1: trying to penetrate and get into the backfield and make
- 18:41Speaker 1: a play, and it kind of you know, he guesses
- 18:43Speaker 1: wrong at times. Other times I just think they're not
- 18:45Speaker 1: executing up front. You know, he's he's slashing inside. There's
- 18:49Speaker 1: no one popping, you know, over the top, kind of
- 18:50Speaker 1: a scrape exchange type of deal. I think some of
- 18:52Speaker 1: the stuff with with the Bucks is particularly like the
- 18:56Speaker 1: Baker Mayfield runs. I don't think they were expecting Tampa
- 18:59Speaker 1: or on the ball with Baker, you know, when he
- 19:01Speaker 1: showed that read option look, I think they were probably betting, oh,
- 19:05Speaker 1: he's going to hand it off, like Baker hadn't had
- 19:07Speaker 1: a rushing attempt of the previous three weeks. So the
- 19:09Speaker 1: Bucks really tendency broke there and caught the Bills. But
- 19:13Speaker 1: I think that was more game plan specific than it
- 19:15Speaker 1: was on Bosa. The other runs where he got caught inside,
- 19:18Speaker 1: they did a good job of putting the tight end
- 19:20Speaker 1: to his side and arcing that tight end where the
- 19:22Speaker 1: tight end would like kind of influence Bosa and make
- 19:24Speaker 1: it seem like he was going to engage him and
- 19:26Speaker 1: then go around him and get someone else. And so
- 19:29Speaker 1: then Bosa would get caught kind of you know, off
- 19:31Speaker 1: foot or off kilter, thinking he was going to engage
- 19:34Speaker 1: the tight end. All of a sudden, he's grasping an
- 19:36Speaker 1: air and then here comes a guard or a center
- 19:39Speaker 1: or a tackle or another tight end to kind of
- 19:41Speaker 1: smash him in the face or the ear and kind
- 19:43Speaker 1: of attack him that way. So it's I think it's
- 19:46Speaker 1: just teams attacking him a little bit, and the Bill's
- 19:49Speaker 1: not being sound up front in their fits, which is unfortunate.
- 19:57Speaker 1: A lot of comments your question. Steve says, well, Thompson
- 19:59Speaker 1: played for to allow him to get healthy. I would
- 20:01Speaker 1: like to see that, and then Steve Wilso said that
- 20:03Speaker 1: I'd like to see Thompson and Williams together. I wouldn't
- 20:06Speaker 1: mind it. I think Dorian is still inconsistent with his
- 20:10Speaker 1: fits and responsibilities, but the athleticism and the violence are nice.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Brian says, have you seen any encouraging from t J
- 20:17Speaker 1: Sanders yet? I'll give him a pass because he's an
- 20:20Speaker 1: injured rookie, but I'm nervous because the pill, the pick
- 20:22Speaker 1: felt like Dwayne Carter on Draft day. Ooh. I think
- 20:26Speaker 1: he's better as a rookie than Carter was as a rookie.
- 20:30Speaker 1: I have seen encouraging reps. I am kind of giving
- 20:33Speaker 1: him a pass because of the injury, and you know him,
- 20:36Speaker 1: you know that affects him physically. Who knows how it
- 20:38Speaker 1: affects him mentally, and he's not getting time on task.
- 20:41Speaker 1: But I am discouraged when it comes to t J Sanders.
- 20:43Speaker 1: I think I said on the show last week. Maybe Yeah,
- 20:46Speaker 1: I think I said on the last week or maybe
- 20:48Speaker 1: the week before, I'm happy to have him back. But
- 20:51Speaker 1: I saw talk from folks that were like, oh, you know,
- 20:53Speaker 1: he's he's coming back off ir he was really rounding
- 20:57Speaker 1: into form before he got hurt and was on the
- 20:59Speaker 1: you know, trend upwards. I disagreed with that. I didn't
- 21:02Speaker 1: see that. Again. I'd rather have him in the lineup
- 21:06Speaker 1: than the practice squad guys they had filling in there.
- 21:08Speaker 1: No disrespect, but I don't really necessarily think he's on
- 21:12Speaker 1: an upward trajectory. I think the splash plays aren't really there,
- 21:17Speaker 1: you know, the the the low point plays aren't really
- 21:20Speaker 1: there either, which is good just to not see. But
- 21:24Speaker 1: I've seen a couple of encouraging reps. But overall, I
- 21:26Speaker 1: think it's a bit of an underwhelming rookie year for him. Granted,
- 21:31Speaker 1: like you said, the injuries definitely playing a role. BA
- 21:41Speaker 1: did cam have better same or worse receivers if you're
- 21:43Speaker 1: talking about Miami and cam Ward, Beck has better receivers
- 21:49Speaker 1: this year Malick I, Tony is sick, Daniels is sick,
- 21:54Speaker 1: Marion is good. Rastrepo was really fun for cam Ward
- 21:58Speaker 1: last year. But yeah, I would say Miami has overall
- 22:03Speaker 1: this year. I think the wide receiver cord is better
- 22:06Speaker 1: than what cam Ward had last year. Mmmmm. Williams says
- 22:12Speaker 1: his math has shown much as a run stuffer a
- 22:14Speaker 1: little bit uh fad Aian mathis a little bit, but
- 22:16Speaker 1: also getting displaced. I you know, to compare him to
- 22:21Speaker 1: a practice squad guy who I wanted to get more
- 22:23Speaker 1: time a couple of years ago, Eleanku didn't give you
- 22:26Speaker 1: anything as a pass rusher, but was a force against
- 22:28Speaker 1: the run and just would not get moved. I think
- 22:31Speaker 1: aku show much more as a run stuffer positively and
- 22:34Speaker 1: a lack of negatively. Mathis has had a couple of
- 22:37Speaker 1: good run defense reps, but a lot of subpar stuff
- 22:40Speaker 1: where he's getting kind of uh blown out, blown out
- 22:43Speaker 1: the gym a little bit or thrown off the club.
- 22:45Speaker 1: I should say. Mmm. Jacob says, is there a schematic
- 22:50Speaker 1: change to fix the run? D oh, we're gonna talk
- 22:51Speaker 1: about it. Good question. Do you think Terrens regressing this
- 22:56Speaker 1: season is a byproduct of the pieces surrounding him, age
- 22:59Speaker 1: kept up catching up to him, a combination of both,
- 23:01Speaker 1: or another factor that I haven't listed. I think injuries
- 23:05Speaker 1: and not having consistent practice time and playing time is
- 23:08Speaker 1: affecting him arguably more than anything. And I think some
- 23:13Speaker 1: of the changes to the defense as a whole, Bernard
- 23:16Speaker 1: playing next to him and being banged up, inconsistencies up front,
- 23:20Speaker 1: them playing bass a little bit more, kind of throwing
- 23:22Speaker 1: things out of rhythm and his responsibilities. He's always been
- 23:26Speaker 1: a really good run defender, and he's struggling to kind
- 23:29Speaker 1: of trigger, shoot gaps key and read what's going on
- 23:32Speaker 1: in front of him. So I think a lot of
- 23:34Speaker 1: it is just him not having the flow and the
- 23:38Speaker 1: form that he's used to having from a practice standpoint,
- 23:42Speaker 1: from a game standpoint. But I do think, you know,
- 23:45Speaker 1: miles on the tires catching up to him a little bit.
- 23:47Speaker 1: He was never the most amazing or best athlete. You
- 23:50Speaker 1: have some injuries, you have more miles on the tires.
- 23:52Speaker 1: He plays a physical brand of football. I do think
- 23:55Speaker 1: you know some wear and tears getting too him a
- 23:57Speaker 1: little bit. Question from Heather, how do you feel about
- 24:01Speaker 1: Groot's development? Is this what he is? Is it good enough?
- 24:04Speaker 1: I think he can still get to some other levels
- 24:09Speaker 1: as far as his ceiling, but I think that's questionable.
- 24:15Speaker 1: I think My biggest issue with grud is they paid
- 24:17Speaker 1: him like he's a true edge one, and I don't
- 24:19Speaker 1: think holistically he is. I said this during the off
- 24:21Speaker 1: season two, so not trying to do this with hindsight.
- 24:24Speaker 1: I think he's very much an edge one as a
- 24:26Speaker 1: run defender. He's not an edge one as a pass rusher.
- 24:28Speaker 1: He's more of a robin that needs a batman as
- 24:31Speaker 1: a pass rusher. So I think his development has been
- 24:35Speaker 1: good considering how raw and green he was as a
- 24:37Speaker 1: rookie coming in where he's risen to so good development.
- 24:42Speaker 1: I don't think this is his final form, but where
- 24:45Speaker 1: he is right now is not good enough. They paid
- 24:47Speaker 1: him like an edge one, and overall I think he's
- 24:48Speaker 1: more like an edge one in three quarters or an
- 24:52Speaker 1: edge two, which is unfortunate and that kind. If he
- 24:55Speaker 1: doesn't continue to improve to improve, that contract is going
- 24:58Speaker 1: to look worse. What else? What see another question similar thoughts, Jason,
- 25:08Speaker 1: do you think Milano and Jones are gone after this year,
- 25:10Speaker 1: along with possibly Johnson Daikwon Jones. Yes, he's a UFA
- 25:14Speaker 1: this offseason. I think he's gone. Maybe he comes back
- 25:16Speaker 1: as a rotational guy on the cheap like one year
- 25:18Speaker 1: two million, three million something like that. Milano they redid
- 25:21Speaker 1: his deal. I think Milana was likely gone anyway. Also,
- 25:26Speaker 1: I should say, Steve says, if Samuel can't go Thursday,
- 25:30Speaker 1: I'm expecting More to take his place. To you agree,
- 25:32Speaker 1: I certainly hope so. I certainly certainly certainly hope so.
- 25:35Speaker 1: And in an ideal world, Samuel can go and him
- 25:37Speaker 1: and More both in that lineup. Jason says, thoughts on
- 25:41Speaker 1: Morgan Fox helping the D line. I watched him a
- 25:43Speaker 1: little bit of his preseason tape and I was very underwhelmed,
- 25:45Speaker 1: to the point that I didn't continue watching it and
- 25:47Speaker 1: I stopped. I also think what's very interesting is the
- 25:51Speaker 1: Falcons needed help on defense. Granted they went younger and
- 25:54Speaker 1: went juice and athleticism, but they signed him like a
- 25:57Speaker 1: two year, eight and a half million dollar deal and
- 25:59Speaker 1: then just cut him out of nowhere and nobody else
- 26:02Speaker 1: picked him up. Granted, maybe he was waiting for the
- 26:05Speaker 1: right team the right time, so on and so forth,
- 26:07Speaker 1: but no one else kind of taking a stab at him,
- 26:10Speaker 1: and Atlanta just letting him go. A team that kind
- 26:12Speaker 1: of needed help there and needed some veteran presence and
- 26:14Speaker 1: effectiveness being the ones to let him go and no
- 26:17Speaker 1: one else calling. I think that's worrisome, and the tape
- 26:20Speaker 1: was underwhelming to the point that I didn't really want
- 26:21Speaker 1: to continue. I just kind of stopped. John Roberts says, rumor,
- 26:31Speaker 1: is there thinking about using TJ. Sanders at defensive end
- 26:33Speaker 1: and Solomon playing defensive tackle. Yeah. They used Sanders at
- 26:35Speaker 1: defensive end a little bit in this past game against Tampa,
- 26:39Speaker 1: and they've been lining up Solomon as like the defensive tackle,
- 26:42Speaker 1: you know, a gap type of player, a lah Michael
- 26:44Speaker 1: Hoyt in rush situations on like third downs, they drop
- 26:48Speaker 1: him into coverage, do some stuff, take advantage of his
- 26:50Speaker 1: athleticism in size and juice a little bit. So that's
- 26:53Speaker 1: been happening a little bit. I haven't heard anything aside
- 26:55Speaker 1: from that or seen anything aside from that com in here.
- 26:59Speaker 1: TI Johnsrsser is something to watch. No best pass protector
- 27:02Speaker 1: on the team. Some nice reps run the ball, nice
- 27:04Speaker 1: reps catching the ball. I talked about it on last week's episode.
- 27:07Speaker 1: They need to get some other backs involved to let
- 27:08Speaker 1: Cook rest a little bit and let him, you know,
- 27:11Speaker 1: kind of recharge his battery as necessary. I thought, given
- 27:14Speaker 1: some reps to ray Davis work. Given some the ty
- 27:16Speaker 1: Johnson could work, and Johnson really showed out in this
- 27:18Speaker 1: past game, which is really nice to have. Evan says,
- 27:22Speaker 1: what does Beinger McDermott have against one tech defensive tackles
- 27:24Speaker 1: or nose tackles? Hate how we got poon Aford and
- 27:26Speaker 1: never used him. Stopping the runs mean they'll pass more
- 27:29Speaker 1: and easier to plan for that, right, So essentially what
- 27:33Speaker 1: being a McDermot don't have anything against one tech or
- 27:35Speaker 1: nose tackles, But they essentially prefer interior defensive linemen who
- 27:40Speaker 1: are pass rush first, one gap, shooting gap type of players.
- 27:45Speaker 1: They want guys who can get upfield, get penetration, get
- 27:48Speaker 1: into the backfield, and rush the quarterback. That's just what
- 27:51Speaker 1: they prefer. They believe in building the defense that way,
- 27:56Speaker 1: So they don't really value a true one tech or
- 27:59Speaker 1: a true NOE was how most people meet in or
- 28:01Speaker 1: most people defined it. Great case in point at Oliver's
- 28:05Speaker 1: they're starting three tech, he goes down Daikwon Jones, they're
- 28:09Speaker 1: starting one tech, ends up playing three tech and doing
- 28:13Speaker 1: a pretty good job. And they put Dion Walker at
- 28:15Speaker 1: one tech. And why is that notable? Because when everyone's
- 28:17Speaker 1: healthy Daikwon Jones was there starting one tech and he's
- 28:21Speaker 1: doing good at three tech because even he is still
- 28:23Speaker 1: more of a three tech than he is a one tech.
- 28:25Speaker 1: That's just what they gravitate towards philosophically. For better or
- 28:30Speaker 1: for worse, everybody's got something right. Some coaches believe in
- 28:33Speaker 1: a three to four defense. Some coaches believe in a
- 28:35Speaker 1: four to three. Some believe in more man coverage, some
- 28:37Speaker 1: believe more zone. Some believe in blitzing. Some believe in
- 28:40Speaker 1: rushing the front four only and playing coverage. It's just
- 28:44Speaker 1: different schools thought different ways to build the roster. But
- 28:46Speaker 1: at this point, yeah, McDermott Beam believe in penetration and
- 28:50Speaker 1: one gapping and inside rush more than they do anything
- 28:53Speaker 1: on the interior. What I do think is interesting is
- 28:55Speaker 1: that they chose not to layer it in any way.
- 28:58Speaker 1: Instead of just being like, Okay, you know, we want
- 29:00Speaker 1: everybody to be able to throw a fastball, but we
- 29:02Speaker 1: want guys to have some change ups and curves and
- 29:04Speaker 1: sliders and sweepers and stuff, they were just like, no,
- 29:07Speaker 1: we don't care about any other pitch. We just want
- 29:09Speaker 1: everybody to have a fastball, which I don't think is
- 29:11Speaker 1: very sound. But to each Gerald Joey says, were you
- 29:16Speaker 1: surprised that they were able to shut our run game down?
- 29:18Speaker 1: Cook really never got going. I wasn't necessarily surprised. Their
- 29:21Speaker 1: run defense is better than they get credit for. Vida
- 29:24Speaker 1: Vey has a problem, Levante David is still sweet. They've
- 29:27Speaker 1: got some good run defenders at the second level and
- 29:30Speaker 1: from the secondary like Parish Winfield, Tyke Smith, and then
- 29:35Speaker 1: again mixing with their guys up front. So I wasn't
- 29:39Speaker 1: too surprised. No man, man, Man, but Ben, but man,
- 29:44Speaker 1: that question is You're good? Questions coming. We haven't even
- 29:45Speaker 1: got in the main crux of the show yet. I
- 29:47Speaker 1: like this a question, another question from an armchair perspective.
- 29:50Speaker 1: It seems like Poonaford struggled in his season here before
- 29:52Speaker 1: experiencing resurgence once leaving Buffalo. Why was this the case?
- 29:56Speaker 1: I actually, I actually disagree. I think he looked good,
- 30:00Speaker 1: went in the lineup for the Bills, and I don't
- 30:02Speaker 1: know why they didn't play him more. I think that
- 30:04Speaker 1: was either they opted more for like Lynval Joseph or whoever.
- 30:06Speaker 1: I don't remember, but I remember being annoyed. I actually
- 30:10Speaker 1: remember putting out a bunch of stuff of him against
- 30:12Speaker 1: the Chargers that year against the Buccaneers, ironically, I think
- 30:15Speaker 1: he played better than people remember. I don't know why
- 30:19Speaker 1: they didn't include him more. Probably because he's not a
- 30:21Speaker 1: penetrator and a shooter, or maybe it was something else.
- 30:24Speaker 1: I don't know, but I thought he was a useful
- 30:27Speaker 1: rotate guy in their rotation given his skill set and traits.
- 30:30Speaker 1: I still don't know why they didn't play him more,
- 30:31Speaker 1: because I think the tape spoke well of him enough
- 30:34Speaker 1: for him to be like the third or fourth man
- 30:36Speaker 1: in the rotation at minimum. So I don't get it.
- 30:39Speaker 1: So good question. If you had to rank Rousseau amongst
- 30:41Speaker 1: NFL defensive ends, where would he rank?
- 30:45Speaker 3: Oh?
- 30:45Speaker 1: Boy, um, probably somewhere off the top of my head,
- 30:50Speaker 1: probably somewhere around twenty. Probably somewhere around twenty. This is
- 30:55Speaker 1: actually I'm going by contracts, so I look up Edge
- 31:00Speaker 1: Rusher contracts right, and where he is. It's tough. Like
- 31:08Speaker 1: if we go into order of you know, what are
- 31:11Speaker 1: we ranked your total value, we'll go buy total value
- 31:13Speaker 1: of the contract. I would take Michael Parsons, I take
- 31:16Speaker 1: Aiden Hutchinson, I take Nick Bosa, I take Miles Garrett.
- 31:22Speaker 1: I would take Brian Burns, I would take t J. Watt,
- 31:24Speaker 1: I would take Max Crosby, I would take Jonathan Grenard,
- 31:28Speaker 1: I would take to Neil Hunter. That's what nine. Oh
- 31:33Speaker 1: maybe not, maybe I'd put him more in fifteen. I'd
- 31:34Speaker 1: probably take with Shaun Gary. And then you're getting into
- 31:37Speaker 1: guys like Nick, Benito Montes, Sweat, Josh Sweat, Alex high Smith,
- 31:42Speaker 1: guys that are questionable. I think somewhere between. I think
- 31:49Speaker 1: somewhere between fifteen and I think somewhere more around twenty
- 31:54Speaker 1: is where i'd put him. I think you could get
- 31:55Speaker 1: him as high into the fifteens, the mid teens, or
- 31:58Speaker 1: the low teens, but I think somewhere around twenty. And
- 32:02Speaker 1: that's mainly because of how good of a run defender
- 32:04Speaker 1: he is. If we're talking about ranking him just as
- 32:11Speaker 1: like a pass rusher, it's lower. I'm looking at his
- 32:15Speaker 1: game like overall, yeah, there's and I'm even yeah, it's
- 32:19Speaker 1: a kaya Morty's point. I'm not even looking at the
- 32:20Speaker 1: guys on rookie contracts like if I go down even further, yeah,
- 32:26Speaker 1: like you've got Abdul Carter and you've got I'm just
- 32:32Speaker 1: going through everybody Will Anderson and yeah, and Thibodeau. Thibodau
- 32:36Speaker 1: is an interesting one to kind of think about. Yeah,
- 32:38Speaker 1: I think somewhere around twenty would be a safe ballpark
- 32:42Speaker 1: for me. Fact mainly because of his run defense. If
- 32:45Speaker 1: we're talking purely pass rushing, it's it's it's unfortunately lower.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Oh yeah verse by oh, both both Rams Edges Verse
- 32:53Speaker 1: and Byron Young. Yeah. I'm not even going through the
- 32:55Speaker 1: whole like putting everybody through. Like I just went for
- 32:58Speaker 1: the easy, no brainers that were the top list, and
- 33:00Speaker 1: I already think I hit like nine or ten. So yeah,
- 33:03Speaker 1: I think he's comfortably around twenty, but maybe even lower.
- 33:06Speaker 1: I think if you really wanted to play Devil's advocate
- 33:08Speaker 1: and be a Homer, you could maybe get him into
- 33:10Speaker 1: the low teens. But I'm probably putting him twenties as
- 33:14Speaker 1: a solid ballpark now before even really diving into the list.
- 33:19Speaker 1: Oh that's quiet, I'm gonna do this one. Then started
- 33:20Speaker 1: to diving. If you could take a drought air defensive
- 33:22Speaker 1: lineman and put them on this current team, who would
- 33:24Speaker 1: you take? Bruce Smith doesn't count, right, Yeah.
- 33:28Speaker 4: No, drought Oh wow, probably Kyle Williams prime Mario Williams
- 33:42Speaker 4: would be awesome though Prime Jerry Hughes was good too.
- 33:48Speaker 1: Mario and Hughes are close, but I think this team
- 33:50Speaker 1: needs more defensive tackle than anything, so I'd probably take
- 33:54Speaker 1: Kyle Williams. Yeah, I would probably take Kya Williams. Mario
- 33:58Speaker 1: Williams is close though, so one of the williams is
- 34:01Speaker 1: is my answer. Yeah, prime Mario before Rex got his
- 34:06Speaker 1: hands on him, but probably Kyle Williams because I think
- 34:11Speaker 1: they need more defensive tackle stuff than anything. Good questions
- 34:14Speaker 1: feel free to continue to put most questions, thoughts, comments, concerns,
- 34:20Speaker 1: everything into the chat as we go forward here, and
- 34:23Speaker 1: just switching the banner because I start to get into
- 34:25Speaker 1: some of my conversation pieces here for this episode. What
- 34:29Speaker 1: I wanted to lead with here is kind of like
- 34:34Speaker 1: the historical aspects going back several years, because we talk
- 34:38Speaker 1: about so much and about the run defense and oh,
- 34:42Speaker 1: Jason says Ted Washington. I don't really count Ted Washington
- 34:45Speaker 1: as the drought because he was here when the Bill
- 34:47Speaker 1: still made the playoffs. I would look at it purely
- 34:50Speaker 1: as like the guys that were here that weren't making
- 34:52Speaker 1: the playoffs. Well actually technically in that case, than Kyle
- 34:54Speaker 1: Williams doesn't count because they made the playoffs in his
- 34:57Speaker 1: last year. So again the answer would have to be
- 35:00Speaker 1: Mario Williams. I guess for me, if we're really calling
- 35:01Speaker 1: a spade a spade, Shobol is close there, fair answer.
- 35:06Speaker 1: But yeah, I wouldn't count Ted Washington because he was
- 35:08Speaker 1: here when Bills made the playoffs in the nineties. Mary
- 35:15Speaker 1: Oh Prime, Sean Merriman, that was on the Chargers, Yes,
- 35:19Speaker 1: Buffalo Bill Shawn Merryman. No, no, thank you, But that's
- 35:22Speaker 1: a fair thought. Oh yeah, it is a Broncos jersey.
- 35:26Speaker 1: This is a Steve Atwater Broncos jersey. Kyle Williams might
- 35:32Speaker 1: be the answer, but again, the Bills did make the
- 35:34Speaker 1: playoffs his last year, so technically, I don't know if
- 35:36Speaker 1: that counts as the drought anymore because because they made
- 35:42Speaker 1: it technically, but I think he does count because he
- 35:44Speaker 1: was here for so long and they were drought era
- 35:46Speaker 1: for so much of that. All right, So I want
- 35:49Speaker 1: to frame this conversation by leading off and talking about
- 35:53Speaker 1: run defense from a historical standpoint, going back through the
- 35:57Speaker 1: twenty eighteen season. So the twenty eighteen season, and again,
- 36:01Speaker 1: this isn't the end all be all. There's context factors here,
- 36:04Speaker 1: and there's the other side of the ball that matters.
- 36:06Speaker 1: So I don't want anybody saying, like, oh, you can't
- 36:08Speaker 1: boil it down to just this one thing. Don't yell
- 36:10Speaker 1: at me, relax. But I do think some of these
- 36:13Speaker 1: numbers are very interesting when it comes to some run
- 36:16Speaker 1: defense metrics for the Super Bowl winner going back through
- 36:21Speaker 1: the twenty eighteen season. So for reference, I want to
- 36:24Speaker 1: put this all within the backdrop of where the Bills
- 36:26Speaker 1: are right now. The Buffalo Bills currently in twenty twenty five,
- 36:31Speaker 1: they're run defense some major metrics. I'm just going with
- 36:33Speaker 1: three right now. Right they're twenty ninth out of thirty
- 36:37Speaker 1: two teams. They're twenty ninth in EPA per rush, they're
- 36:40Speaker 1: thirtieth in run defense DVOA, and they're thirty second in
- 36:45Speaker 1: yards after contact per attempt at four point two seven
- 36:49Speaker 1: yards after contact per attempt. I want to start with
- 36:52Speaker 1: the yards after contact per attempt, so again, they're last
- 36:57Speaker 1: at four point twenty seven yards after contact per rush.
- 37:00Speaker 1: The Falcons are the team that is below them at
- 37:03Speaker 1: thirty one. Their average yards after contact. Their average rush
- 37:07Speaker 1: yards after contact per attempt is three point eight seven.
- 37:11Speaker 1: So there's no other team this year that's above a
- 37:13Speaker 1: three point eight seven. The Bills are at four point
- 37:15Speaker 1: twenty seven, so almost a full half yard more, which
- 37:19Speaker 1: might not seem like a lot, but it is if
- 37:22Speaker 1: you go back through the twenty eighteen season. That was
- 37:26Speaker 1: as far back as next gen stats goes. If you
- 37:29Speaker 1: go through the twenty eighteen season, the average the average
- 37:35Speaker 1: team that was in last thirty second worst, however you
- 37:37Speaker 1: want to verbalize it, the average worst rush yards after
- 37:42Speaker 1: contact per attempt allowed per year. From this past season
- 37:48Speaker 1: of twenty twenty four, all the way back to twenty eighteen,
- 37:51Speaker 1: the average was three point five to one. Again, the
- 37:54Speaker 1: Bills are currently four point twenty seven. They're almost a
- 37:57Speaker 1: full yard after contact per attempt worse than the average
- 38:03Speaker 1: of the past seven seasons. For reference, Miami was the
- 38:07Speaker 1: worst last year at three point seven, Cleveland in twenty
- 38:10Speaker 1: twenty three to three point two eight. Houston was the
- 38:12Speaker 1: worst in twenty twenty two at three point eight, the
- 38:14Speaker 1: Pats in twenty twenty one at three point four, the
- 38:16Speaker 1: Bengals in twenty twenty at three point four more like
- 38:19Speaker 1: three point five. The Panthers were the worst in twenty
- 38:22Speaker 1: nineteen at three point five to five, and the Bills
- 38:24Speaker 1: were the worst in twenty eighteen at three point twenty nine.
- 38:27Speaker 1: The Bills are having a historically bad defense from a
- 38:32Speaker 1: tackling standpoint and from a rush yards after contact per
- 38:36Speaker 1: attempt standpoint, historically bad going through essentially the last eight
- 38:40Speaker 1: seasons as far back as I could track it through
- 38:43Speaker 1: several metrics or sites. So bad, really bad. Now let's
- 38:48Speaker 1: look at some Super Bowl winner stuff. The ranking in
- 38:52Speaker 1: EPA per rush allowed by the Super Bowl winners from
- 38:56Speaker 1: twenty twenty four through twenty eighteen. Last year was the Eagles.
- 39:00Speaker 1: They were fifth. It's also funny too, because the Chiefs
- 39:02Speaker 1: are in here obviously three times and they're kind of outliers,
- 39:04Speaker 1: especially one season, but we'll put it in here. So
- 39:08Speaker 1: the EPA per rush allowed defensively by each Super Bowl
- 39:11Speaker 1: winner from twenty twenty four through twenty eighteen, they're ranking.
- 39:14Speaker 1: Last year the Eagles. Twenty twenty four they were fifth,
- 39:17Speaker 1: The twenty three Chiefs were eighteenth, the twenty two Chiefs
- 39:20Speaker 1: were fifteenth, the twenty one Rams were sixth, the twenty
- 39:23Speaker 1: twenty Bucks were second, the twenty nineteen Chiefs were twenty ninth,
- 39:28Speaker 1: and the twenty eighteen Pats were eleven, So that twenty
- 39:32Speaker 1: nineteen chief season very much an outlier. That was also
- 39:35Speaker 1: the year that Mahomes and co. Kind of exploded on
- 39:37Speaker 1: the scene with that offense and Mahomes throwing fifty plus
- 39:41Speaker 1: tuddies and just everybody going insane on that side of
- 39:44Speaker 1: the ball. So the offense did a lot of heavy lifting.
- 39:47Speaker 1: So when you have a crazy good offensive season like that,
- 39:52Speaker 1: you can balance out having worrysome aspects on the other
- 39:56Speaker 1: side of the ball, no matter how big. But if
- 39:58Speaker 1: you go through all those other years, so three of
- 40:02Speaker 1: and I'm making sure one, two, three, four, five, six, seven,
- 40:07Speaker 1: so three out of those past seven seasons, the Super
- 40:13Speaker 1: Bowl winner from an EPA per rush a loud standpoint
- 40:15Speaker 1: were essentially top five. Last year, the Eagles were fifth,
- 40:18Speaker 1: the twenty one Rams were six, the twenty twenty Bucks
- 40:20Speaker 1: were second. Then you had the twenty eighteen Pats they
- 40:23Speaker 1: were eleventh, and even the twenty three Chiefs and the
- 40:26Speaker 1: twenty two Chiefs they were essentially middle of the pack
- 40:28Speaker 1: eighteenth and fifteenth. So that twenty nineteen season where the
- 40:31Speaker 1: Chiefs were twenty ninth very much an outlier. But put
- 40:34Speaker 1: that into perspective, with DVOA, So DVA essentially kind of
- 40:39Speaker 1: accounts for opponent situation, you know, time, all these different
- 40:43Speaker 1: things to kind of put everybody on an even scale.
- 40:46Speaker 1: So run defense DVOA ranking by Super Bowl winner through
- 40:50Speaker 1: the twenty nineteen season BECAUSEDVA doesn't go back farther than that.
- 40:54Speaker 1: Last year, the Eagles were second the twenty three Chiefs,
- 40:57Speaker 1: despite the fact that they were eighteenth in EPA per rush.
- 41:00Speaker 1: They were ninth in run defense dv away. The twenty
- 41:04Speaker 1: two Chiefs fifteenth in EPA per rush, fourteenth in run
- 41:08Speaker 1: defense dv away, the twenty one Rams third in run
- 41:11Speaker 1: defense dv away. The twenty twenty Bucks were first in
- 41:15Speaker 1: run defense dv away. The twenty nineteen Chiefs, again outlier,
- 41:19Speaker 1: they were twenty eighth. Don't need You don't need a
- 41:21Speaker 1: defense when you're putting up fifty plus points a game
- 41:24Speaker 1: and your quarterback is set in the world on fire
- 41:26Speaker 1: and the highest fantasy producer throwing fifty touchdowns and you've
- 41:28Speaker 1: got prime Tyreek Hill. And I was gonna say Chris
- 41:34Speaker 1: Kelsey because I'm still focus on drought air defensive lineman
- 41:37Speaker 1: Travis Kelcey and Andy Reid taking the league over and
- 41:40Speaker 1: nobody prepared for the offense that you were gonna run.
- 41:42Speaker 1: So kay, Morris says, so you're telling me there's a chance.
- 41:45Speaker 1: So long story short. Super Bowl winners through this era
- 41:50Speaker 1: of football from twenty eighteen until now, especially recently, have
- 41:54Speaker 1: been very good against the run. From advanced metrics standpoint,
- 42:00Speaker 1: and from let's put everybody on an even playing scale,
- 42:02Speaker 1: account for opponent, account for situation and down in distance
- 42:05Speaker 1: and garbage time and neutral snaps and all that kind
- 42:08Speaker 1: of stuff, right, the Super Bowl winner traditionally has a
- 42:12Speaker 1: good run defense the only outlier. So more often than
- 42:16Speaker 1: not it's a good defense. And when I say good
- 42:18Speaker 1: run defense, at worst it's the top half of the league.
- 42:22Speaker 1: Usually it's closer to top ten, with a multitude of teams
- 42:25Speaker 1: in the top half of the top ten, so like
- 42:28Speaker 1: six or higher. The only outlier really is the twenty
- 42:32Speaker 1: nineteen Chiefs. And again, you can be an outlier and
- 42:35Speaker 1: be really poor in one area if you're an absolute
- 42:38Speaker 1: menace on another side of the ball. Same thing. Conversely,
- 42:41Speaker 1: you can have the worst offense in the league if
- 42:43Speaker 1: you have the best defense ever and you only give
- 42:45Speaker 1: up three points a game. You can be terrible on
- 42:48Speaker 1: offense because you have an amazing defense, and vice versa.
- 42:51Speaker 1: You can have a very porous horrible defense if you
- 42:54Speaker 1: can put up forty plus a game. And that's what
- 42:56Speaker 1: the twenty nineteen Chiefs were, but very much an outlier.
- 43:00Speaker 1: So that's part of why I wanted to frame or
- 43:04Speaker 1: why I wanted to start with that and frame this,
- 43:06Speaker 1: because it's not just talking about it like, oh, you
- 43:09Speaker 1: know they're bad, but so what what does it really mean?
- 43:11Speaker 1: Traditionally that's a death sentence. Having a porous run defense
- 43:16Speaker 1: is a death sentence. And that's from a regular season standpoint.
- 43:18Speaker 1: We're not even talking in once you get into the
- 43:20Speaker 1: playoffs and you face the best of the best, and
- 43:22Speaker 1: weather becomes a factor and all these type of deals
- 43:25Speaker 1: where run defense tends to matter a little bit more. Now,
- 43:28Speaker 1: let's also put that into perspective where Okay, say the
- 43:31Speaker 1: Bills getting the playoffs this year, twenty twenty five playoffs,
- 43:34Speaker 1: who could they face? YadA, YadA. If you're looking at
- 43:38Speaker 1: the AFC and you're looking at some offenses in the AFC, okay, well,
- 43:42Speaker 1: how good are a bunch of teams in the AFC
- 43:45Speaker 1: at running the football? Especially from a playoff team? Standpoint. Well,
- 43:48Speaker 1: I'm glad you asked the Indianapolis Colts. They are first
- 43:52Speaker 1: in EPA per rush by a lot, and they're first
- 43:56Speaker 1: in rushing dv away. The Jacksonville Jaguars are four in
- 44:00Speaker 1: EPA per rush and sixth in rushing dv away. The
- 44:03Speaker 1: Baltimore Ravens are ninth in EPA per rush eighth in
- 44:08Speaker 1: rushing dv away. The Kansas City Chiefs are second in
- 44:12Speaker 1: EPA per rush, fourth in running back runs only for
- 44:16Speaker 1: EPA per rush. So it's not just like, oh, well, yeah,
- 44:18Speaker 1: their EPA per rush is a bunch of mahomes scrambles. No,
- 44:21Speaker 1: even if you remove mahomes and just do running back carries,
- 44:23Speaker 1: they're fourth in EPA per rush for running back carries only,
- 44:26Speaker 1: and overall their fourth in rushing dv away. If you're
- 44:30Speaker 1: focusing on, you know, run success rate, only, the Ravens
- 44:34Speaker 1: fall out of the top ten. The Colts, Jags, Ravens,
- 44:37Speaker 1: and Chiefs all stay in the top ten when it
- 44:40Speaker 1: comes to rushing success rate running and again, we know
- 44:44Speaker 1: the Ravens have had a multitude injuries on the line,
- 44:46Speaker 1: lamar defense, all that kind of stuff, So take some
- 44:48Speaker 1: of their struggles with a grain of salt. I'm surprised
- 44:50Speaker 1: they're even ranked as high as they work from an
- 44:52Speaker 1: EPA per rush standpoint, a DVOA standpoint, all things considered.
- 44:55Speaker 1: So that's what I want. I wanted to lead with
- 44:58Speaker 1: this because it matters. Traditionally, teams that win the Super
- 45:02Speaker 1: Bowl are not vulnerable from a run defense standpoint, and
- 45:08Speaker 1: going into the playoffs this year in the AFC, We'll
- 45:10Speaker 1: see how things shape up, right, We'll see if the
- 45:13Speaker 1: Bills win the AFC East. We'll see if the Colts
- 45:16Speaker 1: really do lock down the one seed? Who locks down
- 45:18Speaker 1: the one, the two, the three?
- 45:19Speaker 2: You know?
- 45:20Speaker 1: Do the Colts win the AFC South. But even if
- 45:22Speaker 1: they don't, it looks like them and Jacksonville are making
- 45:24Speaker 1: a strong case for the playoffs. Both those teams run
- 45:27Speaker 1: the football really well. Baltimore, the way things are shaken
- 45:30Speaker 1: out right now, if you look at kind of who
- 45:34Speaker 1: Baltimore plays down the stretch, who Pittsburgh plays down the stretch,
- 45:37Speaker 1: how the seeding could line up. There's a very real
- 45:40Speaker 1: chance that Buffalo, if they don't win the AFC East,
- 45:43Speaker 1: they travel to Baltimore in the wildcard round, and we
- 45:46Speaker 1: know what that offense does to this Bills defense. But
- 45:49Speaker 1: even that aside, you're gonna have to play some team
- 45:54Speaker 1: or multiple teams in the AFC this year that have
- 45:56Speaker 1: a good run game with good running backs, offensive line,
- 46:01Speaker 1: good scheme and design and sequencing right, and that's a
- 46:06Speaker 1: huge weakness for you. So it matters traditionally for the
- 46:11Speaker 1: last seven eight years, and it matters even more because
- 46:16Speaker 1: of tradition, plus what the AFC is shaping up like
- 46:19Speaker 1: this year in twenty twenty five. So I wanted to
- 46:21Speaker 1: kind of put that out there. I think that was
- 46:24Speaker 1: a good way to kind of frame this because I
- 46:25Speaker 1: think so much of the conversation. I know, even this
- 46:28Speaker 1: isn't necessarily true this year, but I think last year
- 46:32Speaker 1: a lot of oh, Brian says here, so how are
- 46:35Speaker 1: the Chiefs fourth about Mahome scrambles? Their run game always
- 46:37Speaker 1: looks so irrelevant because they're not pulling off like crazy
- 46:43Speaker 1: effective like oh my god, like look at this fifty
- 46:45Speaker 1: yard run, look at this sexy run here. It's just
- 46:47Speaker 1: a lot of effective stuff. It's a lot of Kareem
- 46:49Speaker 1: Hunt stuff where it's like six yards on first and ten,
- 46:52Speaker 1: seven yards on second and four. It's not the big
- 46:55Speaker 1: time sexy stuff. But it's things that convert or move
- 46:58Speaker 1: the chains or again ad expected points per rush from
- 47:02Speaker 1: that standpoint, and yeah, it's yeah. Oh and Kay Morey
- 47:06Speaker 1: says it right there. Hunt has no explosive runs, but
- 47:08Speaker 1: he's pretty consistent in getting successful runs essentially. Yeah, like
- 47:12Speaker 1: Kareem Hunt is the king of like, oh, if this
- 47:14Speaker 1: is blocked for six, he's gonna get you six. Oh,
- 47:17Speaker 1: this is blocked for ten, he's gonna get you six.
- 47:20Speaker 1: Like that's kind of what it is. So yeah, it
- 47:24Speaker 1: matters historically, and it's going to matter this year, likely
- 47:27Speaker 1: with at least one, likely two teams that you are
- 47:31Speaker 1: going to face in the playoffs this year, should the
- 47:34Speaker 1: Bills get there, and should things shake out as they do.
- 47:38Speaker 1: And again, like I was saying, good comments from everyone,
- 47:40Speaker 1: by the way, the entirety had this episode, really good comments,
- 47:42Speaker 1: But like I was starting to say, like I think
- 47:44Speaker 1: a lot of the run defense struggles got overblown, not overblown,
- 47:47Speaker 1: overlooked last year because turnovers are balancing so many things out,
- 47:51Speaker 1: Like teams would just run the ball down the Bill's
- 47:53Speaker 1: throat and then the Bills will get an interception or
- 47:56Speaker 1: punch the ball out and get a takeaway and then
- 47:59Speaker 1: they'd score, or they would do that and score after
- 48:01Speaker 1: they'd already scored them before you knew it was fourteen
- 48:03Speaker 1: to nothing or twenty one nothing or seventeen nothing. And
- 48:06Speaker 1: now all of a sudden, the opponents have to stop
- 48:08Speaker 1: running the ball because times are concerned. They have to
- 48:10Speaker 1: move ball quickly. They got to get you points. They're
- 48:12Speaker 1: chasing the Bills. A lot of people making the comparisons
- 48:15Speaker 1: to the Manning era colts that were built on, Hey,
- 48:19Speaker 1: we can't stop the run, but we got Freeenie and Mathis,
- 48:21Speaker 1: and we know Manning and the offense are gonna put
- 48:24Speaker 1: up thirty. You're gonna have to try and put up
- 48:26Speaker 1: thirty and pass the ball ton So guess what here
- 48:28Speaker 1: come Mathis and free Andy head hunting and just come
- 48:30Speaker 1: in after, you know, Matthews says, the Bills run D
- 48:36Speaker 1: isn't a problem. What games have we lost due to
- 48:38Speaker 1: our poor run defense? It's not necessarily you're focusing on
- 48:40Speaker 1: just on the result. I'm talking process. And again, their
- 48:44Speaker 1: run d defense is horrible. They're historically bad from a
- 48:47Speaker 1: rush yards allowed after contact per attempt. This year they're
- 48:52Speaker 1: twenty ninth and epa per rush allowed. Their thirtieth and
- 48:54Speaker 1: rushing DV away and if you really kind of wanted
- 48:57Speaker 1: to put it through, the Miami run game gave them
- 49:00Speaker 1: problems a couple of weeks ago. The Ravens run game.
- 49:03Speaker 1: I mean, I know the Bills won that game in
- 49:04Speaker 1: Week one before the Ravens choked it away, but the
- 49:06Speaker 1: Ravens run game really was what put the Bills in
- 49:09Speaker 1: a huge hole, Heather says. The Atlanta run game. Yeah,
- 49:12Speaker 1: we lost the Atlanta game good chunk because of the run,
- 49:15Speaker 1: especially early on in that game. We very easily I'm
- 49:19Speaker 1: saying we like we played very easily. Could have lost
- 49:22Speaker 1: that Bucks game, very easily, could have lost that Ravens game.
- 49:26Speaker 1: I know they haven't necessarily lost a ton of games,
- 49:29Speaker 1: so they've only lost three, but I think just focusing
- 49:33Speaker 1: on the loss only it isn't a sound process. Their
- 49:38Speaker 1: run defense, again, from any metric you look at, is
- 49:41Speaker 1: very bad. But even if you want to just look
- 49:44Speaker 1: at it from losses, Okay, they may have only lost
- 49:47Speaker 1: three games, only two of them you don't necessarily maybe
- 49:51Speaker 1: due to the run depending on how you look at it,
- 49:53Speaker 1: but they easily could have lost the Baltimore game. They
- 49:55Speaker 1: easily could have lost this Tampa Bay game, So I
- 49:58Speaker 1: think that's kind of what we're looking at it. I
- 49:59Speaker 1: completely they disagree that their run defense isn't a problem, though,
- 50:02Speaker 1: but I understand kind of how you are looking at
- 50:05Speaker 1: it though. But yeah, yeah, they usially could have lost
- 50:09Speaker 1: to Baltimore and Tampa because of the run too. So
- 50:11Speaker 1: I don't think in general, and ma Stuss is not
- 50:13Speaker 1: from a run defense standpoint, I don't look purely at
- 50:17Speaker 1: the result as like, oh, you know, hey, this means
- 50:20Speaker 1: that we're good, or this means that we're bad. It's
- 50:22Speaker 1: process over results more often than not. Oh, Matthew, you're
- 50:26Speaker 1: saying it definitely can be improved. I wouldn't labeled a problem.
- 50:28Speaker 1: They're horrible in a ton of metrics. But again, to
- 50:31Speaker 1: each their own. Yeah, so what's up Joe? Joe says
- 50:37Speaker 1: the explosive run component worries me for the playoffs, and
- 50:39Speaker 1: it's a shame because it takes away from what I
- 50:41Speaker 1: think is their best pass rush group to date. Now,
- 50:43Speaker 1: what's happening a little bit? We want to talk about explosives.
- 50:46Speaker 1: Let's flip it to the other side. Right, they have
- 50:48Speaker 1: started to steadily climb week after week in stuff, Right,
- 50:51Speaker 1: and that's hugely important for them. So stuff right For
- 50:53Speaker 1: those who don't know those are runs, I should say
- 50:56Speaker 1: they go for zero yards or less the way they
- 50:59Speaker 1: balance out being poured against the run. Last year they
- 51:02Speaker 1: got turnovers and they got tackles for loss or tackles
- 51:06Speaker 1: for no gain. They've been starting to steadily climb week
- 51:10Speaker 1: over week in terms of stuff rate as a run defense,
- 51:15Speaker 1: which is helping to balance things out a little bit.
- 51:16Speaker 1: I even mentioned it with the Tampa Bay game. They
- 51:18Speaker 1: got gashed a ton against Tampa, but they had more
- 51:21Speaker 1: stuffs then I think may have met the eye from
- 51:26Speaker 1: the broadcast angle. Right now, they are tenth in stuff
- 51:29Speaker 1: rate at seventeen point seven percent, which is encouraging. So
- 51:33Speaker 1: they're starting to get more into let's create some negative
- 51:36Speaker 1: plays and keep defenses or keep offenses behind the sticks.
- 51:40Speaker 1: I do think they need turnovers to still help that
- 51:42Speaker 1: and buttress that a little bit. And then you had
- 51:46Speaker 1: to go with your point, Joe, talking about the explosive
- 51:49Speaker 1: run component. The Buffalo Bills are third in the NFL
- 51:53Speaker 1: right now in runs of ten or more yards allowed
- 51:57Speaker 1: at forty five. They've allowed forty five runs of ten
- 52:00Speaker 1: or more yards. They've also allowed the second most rushing
- 52:04Speaker 1: yards per play at five point four. What else they've
- 52:09Speaker 1: allowed the ninth most rushing yards overexpected per attempt? And
- 52:13Speaker 1: then yeah, we talked about the yards after contact per attempt,
- 52:15Speaker 1: which aren't great, aren't great, aren't great? Are green? So yeah,
- 52:22Speaker 1: so we talked about what it is historically. Right, We've
- 52:24Speaker 1: talked about the Super Bowl winners for the last seven
- 52:26Speaker 1: seasons being usually top half of the league against the run,
- 52:30Speaker 1: more often than not top ten, closer to top five
- 52:33Speaker 1: in some instance. Right, we talked about the outlier seasons
- 52:36Speaker 1: of the twenty nineteen Chiefs. We talked about what some
- 52:39Speaker 1: running offenses, rushing offenses look like in the AFC this year,
- 52:43Speaker 1: and how that could be a problem in the playoffs.
- 52:44Speaker 1: I'm just putting out there right now. Like before, as
- 52:49Speaker 1: the season was kind of going through and the Bills
- 52:50Speaker 1: were struggling, I was like, Okay, the Bills are gonna
- 52:52Speaker 1: get a wild card and have to face the Colts.
- 52:54Speaker 1: Oh well, and now I'm like, oh, they got to
- 52:55Speaker 1: face the Colts, like with what their offensive line is doing,
- 52:58Speaker 1: what Skiking's doing, and what Taylor was doing receivers, Like,
- 53:01Speaker 1: that's a matchup you start to look at that because
- 53:03Speaker 1: their run defense is such a vulnerability, and the playoffs
- 53:07Speaker 1: are all about matchups, and the Bills have such a
- 53:10Speaker 1: deficiency and a vulnerability in an important area. That's a
- 53:14Speaker 1: huge matchup problem. Oh what's up, Carl, Thank you for
- 53:18Speaker 1: being here. Think you've been a super chat Carl says, And
- 53:20Speaker 1: do you have stats that differentiate between our run defense
- 53:24Speaker 1: between the twenties and run defense in the red zone?
- 53:28Speaker 1: We always invite teams to run. I don't have those
- 53:32Speaker 1: stats offhand right now, but I will say this so
- 53:35Speaker 1: and this is I like, I appreciate that you made
- 53:37Speaker 1: this comment because I think this gets set all out right,
- 53:39Speaker 1: Like we invite teams to run. Sean mcdermo wants to
- 53:42Speaker 1: put a cap on offenses. He doesn't want to allow
- 53:44Speaker 1: any explosives, nothing through the air. They don't want to
- 53:46Speaker 1: get beat over the top, nothing get behind them, right,
- 53:48Speaker 1: So they quote unquote invite teams to run. The difference
- 53:51Speaker 1: is last year. Even last year, for example, their run
- 53:55Speaker 1: defense was bad. But when they would gap out and
- 53:58Speaker 1: they would bring bodies. And when I say gap out,
- 54:00Speaker 1: I mean you're bringing bodies into the box so that
- 54:04Speaker 1: you have a body for every single gap, not a
- 54:07Speaker 1: body for every single person, because however many blockers there
- 54:11Speaker 1: are in the box for those who don't know, there's
- 54:13Speaker 1: always one more gap than that from a blocking potential perspective.
- 54:18Speaker 1: So the easiest way to think of it, right, say
- 54:20Speaker 1: you just have five offensive linemen, right, five offensive linemen,
- 54:24Speaker 1: you have six gaps. So in order to gap out
- 54:28Speaker 1: against five offensive linemen, you need six defenders because you
- 54:32Speaker 1: need a body for each gap. If you don't have that,
- 54:36Speaker 1: if you just have a body for a body and
- 54:38Speaker 1: you've got five in the box for five offensive linemen,
- 54:40Speaker 1: that means there's one more gap than you can cover.
- 54:43Speaker 1: So in order to change the math, somebody has to
- 54:45Speaker 1: steal a gap or beat somebody one on one and
- 54:49Speaker 1: make a play kind of put that. My issue with
- 54:53Speaker 1: what they've done this year is they're struggling to get
- 54:57Speaker 1: off blocks right, they're struggling with this placement. They're getting
- 55:00Speaker 1: blown off the ball, left, right, backwards, all that kind
- 55:02Speaker 1: of stuff. But even when they bring numbers into the box,
- 55:05Speaker 1: they're still having issues from being sound from a gap
- 55:08Speaker 1: integrity standpoint. You get multiple guys in the same gap,
- 55:11Speaker 1: and you're getting guys not like funneling off of blocks
- 55:14Speaker 1: and flowing off blocks. So it's they I do think
- 55:17Speaker 1: they invite teams to run, but even when they're not
- 55:20Speaker 1: and they're like, okay, we need to stop the run.
- 55:23Speaker 1: They're struggling this year, and I think that is the
- 55:25Speaker 1: bigger cause for concern than last year. I can buy
- 55:28Speaker 1: it a little bit that they invite teams to run.
- 55:31Speaker 1: My issue was in years past when they were like, Okay,
- 55:34Speaker 1: we have to button down and stop it. They could
- 55:36Speaker 1: to a degree. This year they cannot, and even last
- 55:39Speaker 1: year to a degree. I don't think they necessarily were
- 55:41Speaker 1: inviting Baltimore to run in the playoffs, like they just
- 55:44Speaker 1: got run over by Baltimore. I don't think they were
- 55:46Speaker 1: necessarily inviting the Cardinals to run in Week one, they
- 55:49Speaker 1: just got people moved and pushed around. I don't think
- 55:51Speaker 1: they were necessarily inviting the Bucks to run this past week.
- 55:53Speaker 1: They just got pushed around. It's more it's less of hey,
- 55:58Speaker 1: we're inviting this and letting this happen because statistically or
- 56:01Speaker 1: metrically or from an odds perspective, it's better for us,
- 56:04Speaker 1: and it's more, uh, we can't stop this thing, and
- 56:08Speaker 1: that's what you're seeing on tape this year in addition
- 56:10Speaker 1: to the metrics right, especially with the yards after contact
- 56:13Speaker 1: per attempt, like that's a huge concern too, because not
- 56:17Speaker 1: only even if you are inviting teams to run, a
- 56:21Speaker 1: huge piece of inviting teams to run, are your guys
- 56:24Speaker 1: from the second and third level coming down and putting
- 56:26Speaker 1: clamps on those runs. So, oh, we got gashed for six,
- 56:29Speaker 1: but that run stops at six. This year, that run
- 56:32Speaker 1: that would normally get stopped at six is going for
- 56:34Speaker 1: nine or twelve or fifteen or fifty. That's part of
- 56:38Speaker 1: an issue. So it's you've got issues with guys not
- 56:41Speaker 1: getting off blocks, You've got issues with guys getting blown
- 56:44Speaker 1: off the ball, you've got issues with a lack of
- 56:47Speaker 1: gap integrity and proper runfits, though they have gotten better
- 56:50Speaker 1: as the season is progressed, and you're having issues with tackling.
- 56:53Speaker 1: So it's all of those things kind of combining into
- 56:56Speaker 1: one with the inviting teams to run aspects. But I
- 57:00Speaker 1: really appreciate this comment, Carl and your presentation here, and
- 57:05Speaker 1: I will look up this stat and have it for
- 57:08Speaker 1: you next week. Hold me to that. Thank you. Joe
- 57:12Speaker 1: says the Bucks have them alling offensive line, so I
- 57:14Speaker 1: expected explosives, but man, it was hard to watch them
- 57:16Speaker 1: with the line of scrimmage getting a ton of push. Yeah,
- 57:18Speaker 1: I hope it wouldn't happen a ton because the injuries
- 57:20Speaker 1: up front, even though you know Gadeki is there and
- 57:22Speaker 1: Barton is there and Wurf's is there. But yeah, they
- 57:26Speaker 1: got a ton of push. I mean, if the Bills
- 57:28Speaker 1: face a team that can run the ball, well, they're
- 57:30Speaker 1: gonna get run on. That's kind of just what it
- 57:32Speaker 1: is at this point. But some things we could do.
- 57:35Speaker 1: Where is I do want to talk about? Oh, Johnny says,
- 57:40Speaker 1: how big of a factor do you think the Bill's
- 57:41Speaker 1: mistackles play into this? It plays a ton into it
- 57:45Speaker 1: because even when they're getting the opportunity to stop guys,
- 57:49Speaker 1: they're not. Now I gave that number, you know, averaging
- 57:52Speaker 1: four point twenty seven yards you know rush yards after
- 57:55Speaker 1: contact per rush. That can get a little wonky, right,
- 57:58Speaker 1: So you could just get a hand on a guy
- 58:00Speaker 1: and that could count is like contact and it wasn't
- 58:02Speaker 1: really like a tackle opportunity. But I think when you
- 58:05Speaker 1: watch it, it is symptomatic of what they are, which
- 58:08Speaker 1: is they struggle to get off blocks because a lot
- 58:11Speaker 1: of their front is undersized and some of the do
- 58:14Speaker 1: their dudes are banged up, but they struggle to get
- 58:16Speaker 1: off blocks, and then their tackling is also poured from
- 58:19Speaker 1: a form and an angle perspective. So yeah, it's definitely
- 58:23Speaker 1: uh influenced by the mistackles. I don't think they would
- 58:26Speaker 1: have given up as many ten, ten plus yard runs
- 58:28Speaker 1: if they're tackling with more sound, and I don't think
- 58:32Speaker 1: they would have been dashed to you know, an explosive degree.
- 58:34Speaker 1: I think they'd still be giving up like five, six,
- 58:37Speaker 1: seven here and there, but I think they'd be given
- 58:40Speaker 1: up less, you know, fifteen plus yarders, less ten plus
- 58:43Speaker 1: yarders if their tackling was better. I mean, even look
- 58:45Speaker 1: at it's just one play, but that Falcons game, right,
- 58:49Speaker 1: if Rap's angle is better against Algier, or if Bishop's
- 58:52Speaker 1: angle is better against Bijon, or if JaMarcus Ingram you know,
- 58:54Speaker 1: forces Bejon back inside that what eighty yard run, seventy
- 58:58Speaker 1: yard run whatever it was for bj On that becomes
- 59:01Speaker 1: like a nine yard run or a ten yard run maybe,
- 59:03Speaker 1: or Algiers what twenty plus yard touchdown to open things
- 59:07Speaker 1: up where he puts his shoulder through wrap and dribbles
- 59:09Speaker 1: him off the turf, gets stopped at the five and
- 59:13Speaker 1: is maybe a fifteen yard run instead of a twenty plus.
- 59:15Speaker 1: Or the Derrick Henry one where he dribbles Cole Bishop
- 59:18Speaker 1: off the ground. Granted that's Derrick Henry, but it's a
- 59:21Speaker 1: lot of things. It's the mistackles, it's the angles, it's
- 59:24Speaker 1: the poor run fits. It's the lack of gap integrity.
- 59:27Speaker 1: It's the lack of getting off blocks. It's the body
- 59:29Speaker 1: types they bring in. It's the scheme's structure, it's everything.
- 59:32Speaker 1: That's why it's not as simple as, oh, well they
- 59:35Speaker 1: invite the run, because from an e metric standpoint, it's
- 59:37Speaker 1: better than you know, inviting the pass. It's more of
- 59:40Speaker 1: a vulnerability this year. I think when you look at
- 59:42Speaker 1: it holistically, from an individual standpoint, from a body type standpoint,
- 59:46Speaker 1: from a bill standpoint, from a philosophy and scheme standpoint. Now,
- 59:49Speaker 1: this next part is what I want to get to.
- 59:51Speaker 1: This is a good question that leads me into it.
- 59:53Speaker 1: Is there a path for it to be fixed this
- 59:54Speaker 1: season or is the only path to score forty points
- 59:58Speaker 1: per game in the playoffs. I do think the healthier
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: they get, the better their run defense will be That's
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: part of why I'm advocating for Terrell Bernard being able
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: to sit a little bit. They need him to get
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: back to shooting gaps, triggering, playing underneath, blocked and avoiding.
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: Right now, he does not have the mobility to avoid
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: climbing offensive lineman and he's just getting buried. His strength
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: isn't as like a necessarily a downhill player. The way
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: he wins coming downhill is processing, reading, triggering, and winning
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: with angles and you know, bend in some athleticism. Right
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: He's not built to take on blocks, and he doesn't
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: have that mobility right now because he's got a bum
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: wheel and so interior offensive linemen are just getting him
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: and burying him because he's like two hundred and twenty
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: three pounds soaking wet. At Oliver potentially coming back could help.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: We'll have to see what he looks like once he's
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: really good to go. Day Kwon Jones, if he continues
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: to get healthy. TJ. Sanders continuing to get to get
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: more time on task, Larry Ogun Joe. We's starting to
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: get into the flow a little bit. Dion Walker continue
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: on his upward trajectory. My issue with all of that
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: is even when you get dudes back again from a
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: body type standpoint. Going back to one of the points
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: earlier with how they choose to build their interior and
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: their defense, they don't have the horses that are gonna,
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: you know, get you a bucket. They don't have the
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: horses up front they are gonna win one on one
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: right now, And they don't have the horses that are
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: built to anchor to mitigate displacement and not get blown
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: off the ball. So their path to kind of fixing
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: things isn't really to fix things, it's to mitigate it
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: a bit. And a way to do that is one,
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: get healthier. Two they're gonna have to be more sound
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: in their gap integrity and their run fits. The best
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: way for them to stop the run this year is
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: very similar to what it was last year. One, it's
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: game script where they force their opponents away from the
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: run because they're down by too many points. If the
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: closer the game is and teams feel, hey, you know,
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: we're only down ten or it's tied, or we're up
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: by three, teams can stay committed to the run. That's
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: a huge problem. So one, they need game script to
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: force teams away from the run. Two like they did
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: last year two. They can win with numbers, and when
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: I say win with numbers means walking a safety down,
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: playing a safety to the box, you know, gapping out
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: and winning with numbers in the way. Order to do that,
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: they just have to be more sound with their gap
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: integrity and their run fits. And I do think they
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: have been better these past several weeks, especially since Sean
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: McDermott took over the defense. They've been much better in
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: that regard than what they were previously. But they're still
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: not great. So get healthy, be better in their run
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: fits and or when they're bringing numbers into the box
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: and game script helping them, there is a path for
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: it to be mitigated or be helped a little bit.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: I don't think it's going to be fixed. To be honest,
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: I'm not trying to sound pessimistic. I don't think it'll
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: ever be fixed with this regime unless one of two
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: things happens. You either need to get yourself some horses
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: to the point where you just have dudes that can
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: get you a bucket and consistently win one on one,
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: or you have to lean into the inside rush and
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: penetration piece, and those dudes have to be so good
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: at that aspect that it doesn't matter that they can
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: maybe get blown off the ball. I use baseball analogies
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: for so much. If you want guys that only throw fastballs,
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: that can work, but you have to get dudes that
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: all throw like ninety nine plus. That's what you need,
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: and they don't have that right now. They've got guys
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: that only throw fastballs, but several of them only throw
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: like ninety five and that's nothing in baseball today. So
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: they either need to get themselves some hitters no pun
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: intended like, or some dudes who throw absolute heat, or
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: they need to change the body type on the interior
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: because their linebackers aren't going anywhere. Bernard is here to
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: stay with his contract. I don't know if Dorian's going
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: to be the starter next year or if they get
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: another type of linebacker, but what they look for at
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: that spot is it really thumpers, and it's understandably so,
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: like they don't look for guys who take on blocks
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: unless they get themselves a unicorn like cl not unicorn,
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: but somebody who can dibble and dabble in both the
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: run in the past, like CJ. Allen from Georgia, or
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: Anthony Hill from Texas. Like dudes who are just like
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: six three two thirty hammers coming forward, but also athletic
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: and can move. That's not going to change it linebacker,
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: and unless they change the body types on the interior,
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: unless they start to go for more Tyler Williams, Alfred Collins,
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: Roy Lopez free agent who's been doing sweet for the
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: Lions that I wanted. I don't really think it'll get
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: fixed going forward, even past this year. Fixed meaning you know, hey,
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: it's not a worry anymore. It's not going to get
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: fixed unless they get some dudes who are just straight
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: ballers up front, or get due to kind of go
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: against archetype one way or the other. I think, for
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: better for worse, the life cycle of this defense is
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: being built to stop the pass, which is understandable, and
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: then hoping you can get turnovers and create negative plays
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: to the point where it can balance out how much
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: you get gashed and displaced and blown off the ball,
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: and then also hoping your offense does enough to force
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: teams away from running the football. I stopped doing questions
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: for a minute, so let us answer some of that,
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: Oh good question. Here are our coaches improving the play
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: of the players. I think McDermott taking over the defense
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: schematically has improved some things. It's just hard for me
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: to sit there and answer this knowing how bad they're
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: tackling is bad, how bad their angles have been, and
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: what we're seeing. Granted, they've had injuries and they haven't
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: been a whole unit or a complete unit, or been
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: what they thought they were going to be coming into
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: the season, so that is a huge variable. But I
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: do think to a degree, the coaches are improving the
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: play mainly, I think Sean McDermott taking over the defense.
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: I know they got housed in a bunch of ways
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: against Tampa Bay, but the defense has been better since
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: McDermott took over in the second half of that Atlantic game.
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: Why does it seemed like the Bills have been bad
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: at tackling for the entire McDermott era. I think it's
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: really just how they kind of preach their smaller, fast
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: flowing type of defense, and if your angles aren't right
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: because you don't have a lot of mass, if your
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: angle to the ball isn't right, or you're not gang tackling,
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: it's easy to have dudes get ran through, Like Jery
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: Bernard is a good example, right, like, especially because he's
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: hurt now and you're seeing it. If his angle isn't
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: right to the ball, he's getting ran through because he's
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: small and he doesn't have super long arms. So like
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: when he gets his hands on Tesz Johnson for the Bucks,
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: who weighs like one hundred and sixty pounds, yeah, he
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: can grab him and kind of stop him in his tracks.
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: But if it's a shot white on that you know,
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: a little screen on their what first or second drive
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: of the game, he's getting run through? If he is,
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: he's only getting arm on a guy he's getting ran through.
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: And I think it's you know, the type of body
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: types they gravitate towards. Angles to the ball are super,
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: super super important. If you're a smaller dude, your angles
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: to the ball have to be on point, and then
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: your tackling form has to be on point. And then
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: I also think with you know the lack of physicality
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: and practices in training camp now, I think tackling is
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: kind of down to a degree, which is why you're
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: seeing so many like safe tackle stuff and teams that
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: are trying to figure out ways to you know, wrap
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: and roll and do the rugby style tackles or the
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: alligator roll. That type of deal that they tackling is
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: just kind of a wonky thing now with the lack
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: of physicality that happens between games. And then you add
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: in the type of guys that builds gravitate towards and
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: how they play stylistically, and I think it just all
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: of it compounds. M m mmmmmmmmmm. Jim Jack says they
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: aren't running through tackles. The bad misses are players horizontal?
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: How many times have we seen Bishops flying arm tackle.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: I do think they are getting tackles run through though
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: the Tampa Bay game just because it's most rarely available.
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: I think, you know, Bishop was getting run through a
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: bunch with his arms, Bernard was getting run through some
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: with his arms. Dorian was getting run through sometimes with
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: his arms because he couldn't get off a block or two.
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: I do think it's angles. I think it's a combination
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: of poor angles to the ball, poor angles in pursuit
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: decisions within that like cutting under a block instead of
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: playing it over the top, flowing off of one another,
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: and you know, vice tackles or playing together as a
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: unit and everybody quote unquote doing their one eleventh and
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: then also finishing at the tackle point with form. I
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: think it's a combination of all of them. Ryan says,
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: seems like we had some answers during the Panthers game.
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: Do we just need shack? Two things with the Panthers game. One,
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: I think the Panthers got away from their run game
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: when they didn't have to and or shouldn't have. Mainly
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: Rico Dubdle was doing sweet and they just decided to
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: not give him the ball anymore. But game script helped
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: a lot there. And yes, I do think they need check.
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: Joe says, what frustrates me the most about their run
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: defense is that their inability to contain the run is
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: a direct antithesis of their philosophy on offense. So much
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: harder to control the game. I said it during the
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: game and during this week. It's ironic how they built
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: their offense and how they've done the exact opposite with
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: the defense and just not really cared about stopping the run.
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: It's not only like that they're built to stop the pass,
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: it's that they almost like didn't care at all about
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: stopping the run. I understand, being like Hey, we want
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: to stop the pass. That's our mo o. But there's
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: a difference between wanting to stop the pass and just
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: seemingly not caring at all about the run. And with
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: the body types they brought in year after year and
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: the philosophy they have, it seems like they don't care
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: about stopping the run, which is frustrating. Oh Seth says,
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: hit that light book that like button. Yes yes, please, yes,
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: please please please. Joe says, oh Joe, you're hitting again.
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: Said they need an or even two more true too
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: gapping bodies. I was so convinced that they were gonna
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: trade up, they were gonna get Alpha Collins. When they
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: traded up, they have the rushers, but get me some
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: true run stuffers. I get it with Alpha Collins because
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: he was such a far leaning guy to the other way.
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: He gives you nothing in terms of pass rush pop
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: and he's all run stuff. So not having that, I
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: understood why they wanted a little bit more. And again
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: he's so anti their philosophy. I can understand them not
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: taking him. But yeah, when they traded up, I was
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: hoping for it was for Alpha Collins. That's awesome. Ka
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: Mori says, that's wrong. And the team I watch and
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: the NPB, the Cunichi Dragons, get completely silenced just by
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: lining up guys that can throw in ninety five miles
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: an hour. You know what's funny is I was gonna say,
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: who is you might know this better than me or
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: Joe you might know it too. Whoever that sweet Japanese
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: hitter is who just got put on the market to
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: come in into the MLB this year. I forgot what
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: stab I saw where he's like batting like one ten
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: against pitchers who throw higher than ninety three or ninety five. Yeah, Morikami, Yeah,
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: some crazy stat where he's batting like horrible, horrible against
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: I need to look it up, Mora Kami against. I
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: think it's that. Oh yeah, there it is, Oh wow yeah. Uh.
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: Munititaka Morikami has shown significant struggles against high velocity pitching
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball. His batting average in the
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: twenty twenty five NPB season Mori Kami, I went too high,
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: Morikami hit. Morikami hit oh ninety five against fastballs ninety
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: three miles per hour or higher. His career average is
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: one eighty eight against fastballs ninety three miles or or
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: miles per hour or or higher. It's twenty twenty two,
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: is contact rate against fastballs ninety three or greater is
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: only sixty three percent? In twenty twenty five, is content
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: his contact rate against fastballs faster than ninety three miles
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: per hour wasn't even worse forty one point seven percent,
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: a rate described as Joey Gallo at is the deer. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: fair point. Thank you for that. Thank you both of you, guys.
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: Kem Morey's saying more a comedy and Joe saying more
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: a comedy as well. Yeah, that's kind of it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: it's and again tying that into again the Bill's piece there,
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: like it's you can't be so difficent like that, Like
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: the more comedy example is actually like fair in this instance,
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: it's fine to be like, hey, hitting fastballs isn't our strength, right,
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: We're better at hitting off speed, or we're better at
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: hitting slow stuff like that's understandable, but you just can't
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: be completely deficient. That's what the Bills run defense is
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: right now. It's fine to be like, you know, we're
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: not the best run defense. We're fourteenth, or we're sixteenth
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: or seventeen. You can't be twenty ninth, thirtieth, thirty, second, thirty, first, thirty, first, thirtieth,
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: twenty eighth. In almost like every run defense metric, you
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: can't be that deficient and that vulnerable. It can't be again,
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: like a Morecami situation where oh, all we have to
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: do is throw him something harder than ninety three and
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: he essentially is completely ineffective and gets shut down. Cool,
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: let's you just do that. That's the issue that the
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: Bills have right now with their run defense. It's not like, oh,
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: against fastball's ninety three miles per hour or higher, he's
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: batten you know, two sixty he batten. I to go back,
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: because I can't remember how crazy he's batten, Oh, ninety five,
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: like less than one out of every ten. That's you're
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: not even on the on the radar with that, my man.
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: And that's kind of where the Bills run defense is
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: right now. It's one thing to be built to stop
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: the pass and struggle a bit against the run. It's
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: a completely other thing to be completely deficient against the
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: run and completely vulnerable, which is what they are right now.
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: And then tying into that schematically Poyer coming back at
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: stem the Tide a little bit. Bishop's development has helped
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: a little bit. Hancock has helped a little bit because
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: but he doesn't really play early downs. But then when
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: you're playing more single high early on, they were struggling too,
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: because then you were forcing Taylor Rap and Cole Bishop
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: both into the post safety single high safety role and
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: that didn't fit either guy. Bishop has gotten better in
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: that regardless. The season has gone along, but he's still
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: better in and around the box right now and still
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: learning how to play deeper. Good times, good times? What else?
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: What else? Heather saying Bernard was so good a minute
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: or like a year ago. I really do think it.
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: It's tied to the injury, or at least that's what
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: I'm hoping. Charles says to Dion Walker's is better than one, Yes,
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: but give me more run. Give me more of a
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: run defense dion Walker than a penetrating Deon Walker. I
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: have been pleasantly surprised with his overall play this year,
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: and I do think he's getting better with his anchor,
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: but he still gets knocked around too much for my
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: taste and my liking from a run defense standpoint, but
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: I do think. I do think too, Dion Walkers would.
- 1:15:08Speaker 3: Be fun mm hmmm, what else what I want to
- 1:15:14Speaker 3: get through some more comments? Well that's funny, Joe, I'm saying, yeah,
- 1:15:19Speaker 3: he's basically go Heather said about more of comedy.
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: Can you bunt? That's funny? U oof, it's a great comment.
- 1:15:25Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: The Texans are the scariest mix of scheme and talent man.
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: They have the horses and the structure on defense. I
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: am super excited for Thursday night and also horribly terrifyed
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: for Bills versus Texans because the tech the Texan can
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: do exactly what give the Bills trouble? Go single high
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: and dare the Bills to beat their really good corners
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: in Derek Stingley, who's one of the best corners in
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: football and would be the best corner of football if
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: not for Pats or Tan. And then on the other
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: side is Kamari Lassiter, who's a dog against the run
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: and actually and pretty good in coverage too. And then
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: if you can't run the ball in Houston, you're in
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: more past situations and down in distances. And then Will
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: Anderson and Denial Hunter just get to tee off on
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: you absolutely terrifying, and Joe says, no, peatree may help
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: a smidge, but yeah, it might be ugly. Yeah, frustrating, frustrating, frustrating.
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: Oh gotta go here so we get a super jet.
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: Thank you for being here, Jason, thank you for the
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: super jet. Jason says, yeah, man, the philosophy has to change,
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: like you mentioned in others, To me, it looks like
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: defensive rosters are going to have to be much more specialized.
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: I like the idea of I think what Greg Olsen
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: said it last week and the conversation expounded from there.
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: I like the idea of becoming more situational, be becoming
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: more cognizant situationally than personnel wise, instead of like, oh,
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: hey they have two tight ends on the field, let's
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: match with base or they're in twenty one or twenty two.
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: Let's match with bas and three linebackers. You gotta YadA?
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: Do we get more on? Yeah, they're in twelve or
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: twenty one or twenty two, but it's still first down
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: and they passed the ball sixty five percent end of
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: the time on first down. So play in more of
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: the tendency and the down and distance in situation I
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: do think to me, the answer from a roster standpoint,
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: from a body standpoint, I don't want to get too
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: off topic here, but you need a Kyle Hamilton type defensively,
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: and I know he's a unicorn, but what I'm saying
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: is more of you need more of the big Nickel.
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: You need that nickel who makes you not necessarily impervious
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: to mismatches in personnel. But you need somebody like that.
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: You need somebody who you can sit and leave in
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: there and who can function against eleven and ten personnel
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: in coverage, and then who can also function against twelve
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: and twenty one personnel when it comes to the run
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: defense stuff. Again, I think it's really interesting, like the
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: Ravens are kind of the forefront of that now, Like
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: they went and got a lowhi Gilman so they can
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: play Gilman and Stark's back deep and then allow Kyle
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: Hammond to the Hamilton to be big Nickel after they
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: did the opposite last year and let him play deep.
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: He's so unreal. But I think big Nickel is gonn
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: matter more and more, and I think having guys on
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: the interior who can't control gaps will matter. Now you
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: don't have to be huge to control gaps, but it
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: is a skill set thing, and it is a body
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: type thing, and in theory, the bigger guys tend to
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: be able to control their gaps a little better. I
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: do think teams need more ass kickers on the interior.
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: I do think we're starting to get away from penetration
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: based guys on the interior, or at least having that
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: being completely you know, kind of the forte. And I
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: do think you need to be able to match in
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: a variety of ways. Search your point. Yeah, I do
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: think you have to get more specialized. I think defenses
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: have to either you either need someone or someones who
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: are a skeleton key for you, or to use another
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: baseball example, like you either need a true ace or
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: you need just a sweet bullpen that has like three
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: four five really good arms and you can just match
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: on any given night. And both of those things are
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: hard because you either have to spend or draft and
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: develop the ace, or you have to spend money. I'd
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: acquire all the bullpen guys or draft and develop those
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: guys Type two. So I think specialization is gonna matter
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: a lot going forward. I think that matters a lot,
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: a lot a lot. Yeah, there's gonna be interesting though,
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: especially with how the Bills played against the offense played
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: against Tampa Bay. I mean, just to see what they
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: do against houston 'es. Mostly even though it's a short
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: week and that's such a variable and so annoying that like,
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: if the Bills get housed, I'm still in the back
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: of my mind gonna be like, well, it's a short week.
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: And if the Bills house Houston, I'm still gonna be like, well,
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: it was a short week. So that's a really unfortunate variable.
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: But it's gonna be a tough matchup and one I
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: am excited to see. So everything we talked about here,
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: so the historical numbers, why they matter, super Bowl winners
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: the past seven years, how they fared against the run,
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: why that's important, Where the Bills are right now against
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: the run, why that's important. Teams that they will likely
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: see make the playoffs in the AFC and thus potentially face,
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: why that's not necessarily good for the Bills. And then
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: we've talked about body types on the interior and in
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: the spine. We've talked about things they can do to improve. Again,
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: I don't this year it's going to be tough. You're
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: just hoping that players take a jump and get better socially,
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: the younger guys as the season goes on, or you
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: start to just get better from a technique standpoint and
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: from a run fit standpoint and a gap integrity standpoint,
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: which is possible. But I don't think the run defense
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: is going to get fixed. I don't think that all
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: of a sudden going to become an amazing unit. I
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: also do think turnovers are gonna matter. If they can
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: get turnovers, that'll help balance things a little bit. Essentially,
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: they're not going to fix the run defense this year.
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: They can just mitigate how much of a vulnerability or
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: deficiency it is in theory. But it's tough. It is tough. Uh,
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: I'm gonna grab some stuff. Marty says. I know we're
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: on defense now, but I have a wide receiver question.
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: When we were more successful in passing last week, We're oh, sorry,
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: were we more successful in passing last week? Because it
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: was just receivers rather than roll guys, back shoulder guys,
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: yards after catch guy, et cetera. I think it was
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: two things. I think I think Brady called a good
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: game from a sequencing standpoint, and a design standpoint. I
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: think getting Curtis Samuel more involved was helpful as well,
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: but I think a lot of it was just more
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: tendency breaking. You saw more passing on first down. You
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: saw more play action, especially on first down. You saw
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: a couple of play action passes that were based off
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: of their core run concepts. Also on first down, you saw,
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: you know, move in the pocket a little bit with
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: some half boot type stuff. You saw, you know a
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: little bit of the change in ratio from shotgun runs
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: and under center passes or flip that under center pace
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: his shotgun passes, so changing the rates, a little more
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: passing from under center, a little more running from undershotgun.
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: So I think it was more just tendency tweaking that
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: led to them being more successful in passing. And then
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: some Josh Allen Unicorn stuff right those you know, a
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: couple of plays almost back to back where in the
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: fourth quarter where he's stepping up, Hey, it looks like
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: I'm gonna scramble just kid, and I'm going to fire
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: a dart in there real quick to gave Davis and
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: then Dawson Knox him taking the shot to Shavers for
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: the touchdown, which ironically, he had Gabe Davis open for
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: an easy first down, he chose not to take it.
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: H So this is a larger conversation I don't get in.
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: I don't want to get into right now. So many
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: things on this offense are just going to come down
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: to Josh Allen's decision making. I don't think Brady is
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: failing Alan as much as get Talks is getting talked about.
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: I also don't think he's built, you know, bunchessing Alan
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: as much as people give him credit for, just like
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: I didn't think Ken Dorsey was screwing Josh Allen as
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: much as he got blamed for stuff. Sometimes Alan just
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: is what Alan wants, And I think the touchdown to
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: Shavers was a great example. He balls out and makes
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: a ridiculous throw to Shavers on a scramble drill, but
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: the reason he needed to do that was because he
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: decided not to throw the ball to Gabe Davis for
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: an easy first down on third down. Like, that's awesome,
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: Unicorn play, mutant play super cool, but also not sound right,
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: also not good process, And that's kind of where we
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: get back to it, Josh Allen. But you take that stuff,
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: you take the crazy, the wonkiness. Yeah, the comment right here,
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: I should have thrown it, but I didn't. Essentially what
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: he said, I tweeted and I forgot the exact verbiage.
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: You get some crazy stuff, you get some fun stuff,
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: kind of take the good with the bad. We're back
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: to the yin and yang of Josh Allen. But I
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: do think, yeah, a lot of the offensive success was
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: due to some of the tendency flipping from Joe Brady
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: and then Alan making some ridiculous plays on top of it.
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: But I think it all stemmed from and see tweaks again.
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: They were super heavy into different areas that where it
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: wasn't like, oh they're like fifty five to forty five
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: or sixty forty. It was like, no, eighty twenty seventy thirty.
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: They were heavy. It was easy to kind of break
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: them down and to see them telegraph what they were doing.
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: Zack of all trades. I have not looked at prospects
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: yet for twenty twenty six. Yeah, who are the top
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: three text of bills are eyeing? I'm not even ready
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: to laugh about that. I do agree wide receiver linebacker
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: true one text or high on my list. Safety potentially
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: as well. I haven't gotten into the safety class, and
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: there's no way Caleb Downs is gonna fall. But I
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: take Carole browns uh. Jim Jacks says, it's funny this
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: happens every year. McDermott says, you can't fix this during
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: the year, but they don't fix it in the offseason either.
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: I think that's a very fair comment, and that's why, again,
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: this is another longer conversation. So much of their run
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: defense issues come from the body types they choose and
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: the philosophy they choose to run defense. So many of
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: their issues stem from that. And until they change that,
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: That's why I said it earlier. I forget who asked
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: that question. Until they change that, I don't see them
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: fixing quote unquote the run defense they get. The only
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: way to fix is it if they change the body
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: types and or philosophy, because both of those are tied.
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: It's pretty significantly hand in hand. Or they just get
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: some absolute bucket getters up front who just it doesn't
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: matter the scheme or structure, body type, they're just dudes
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: who win no matter what, know how to get off
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: blocks and can shoot and beat guys and win rate
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: and all that kind of stuff. So it's tough. It's tough.
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: It's tough. It's tough. Huh man, we'll see it's a
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: larger conversation.
- 1:25:46Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: For those keeping track at home, I might do another
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: episode later this week because the bills play on Thursday.
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: I didn't do an episode a couple of weeks ago,
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: so I'm technically behind one and I want to get
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: that back on the docket. So keep an eye out

- 1:27:56Speaker 1: for that, Joe. You know, Joe says the Bills are
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: still seventeenth in play rate for the week. I'm begging
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: them to get in the top fifteen. Maybe they're not
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: doing that because you didn't get one pie when you
