Transcript
- 1:04Speaker 1: Today we're talking about that's not in the Bible, examining verses that don't exist, but we'll also talk about verses that are taken out of context, that I mean almost are not verses and that they are misapplied, and so yeah.
- 1:20Speaker 1: So yeah, all right, thank you.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Thank you for joining us.
- 1:26Speaker 3: I would like to be joining us friends, I think this is an important subject because, as a new Christian, I remember sitting there.
- 1:32Speaker 3: I was about three days old and I had a Bible on my lap.
- 1:35Speaker 3: It was a huge Bible.
- 1:35Speaker 3: I thought I want to conquer this.
- 1:37Speaker 3: I want to be able to say that's not in the Bible.
- 1:40Speaker 3: After 50 years I haven't conquered it.
- 1:42Speaker 3: There's so many verses I haven't even understand as I understand or got to in a sense, like Leviticus and stuff like that.
- 1:48Speaker 3: But when someone says God helps them, that help themselves, I want to be able to say that is not in the Bible, because that's the basis of Catholicism God will help you.
- 1:58Speaker 3: After all, you can do Same with Mormons and it's a deception and so we need to know what's not in the Bible.
- 2:05Speaker 3: I mean for those who don't understand the principle it's easy to know what's in the Bible.
- 2:09Speaker 3: I mean for those who don't understand the principle.
- 2:10Speaker 3: It's easy to know what's in the Bible Jesus wept I know that verse, so you can say that is in the Bible, but to say it's not in the Bible you need to know the whole of scripture, right?
- 2:20Speaker 1: Well, I would say this would be at the top of the list.
- 2:21Speaker 1: When you guys, in terms of verses that people don't know, the word think must be in the word.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Yes.
- 2:25Speaker 1: And you hear it quoted here and there from time to time.
- 2:27Speaker 1: But let's break some of these down.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Obviously we don't just want to say, okay, that's not in the Bible, but let's talk about the unbiblical element of God.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Helps those who help themselves Psalm 121.2,.
- 2:39Speaker 2: My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth, and Romans 5.6,.
- 2:44Speaker 2: For while we were still weak at the right time, christ died for the ungodly.
- 2:49Speaker 2: God does not help those who help themselves.
- 2:53Speaker 2: The fact is, we can't help ourselves.
- 2:55Speaker 2: You don't understand how dead you are in your sins and your trespasses.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Christianity is this great big journey of realizing that Christianity is nothing like the world, and it is a continual cry out to God for help.
- 3:09Speaker 2: It's not a moment by moment.
- 3:11Speaker 2: I got this one.
- 3:13Speaker 2: I got this one.
- 3:13Speaker 2: You know I didn't need you today.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Maybe next week you know, this is an easy one.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Somebody who is self-reliant is not a praying person, you know.
- 3:24Speaker 4: I learned that from Ray.
- 3:25Speaker 4: I like that.
- 3:26Speaker 2: You know, are you?
- 3:26Speaker 2: I remember asking Ray one time are you nervous when you pray or when you open your preach?
- 3:31Speaker 2: And he said he goes.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, but a nervous man is a praying man, right?
- 3:37Speaker 2: Otherwise, what is the point and the purpose of having the Lord instead of our lives?
- 3:42Speaker 2: We need him.
- 3:43Speaker 2: We are so reliant upon him.
- 3:44Speaker 2: I've often said that we need him more than our lungs need oxygen or relying upon him.
- 3:48Speaker 2: I've often said that we need him more than our lungs need oxygen or more than our veins need blood.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Moment by moment, day by day is when we need him.
- 3:54Speaker 2: There's nothing we can do.
- 4:01Speaker 1: That's why Christ came, because we couldn't help ourselves.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, there's a prayer.
- 4:04Speaker 1: I pray when I'm feeling nervous when I'm about to do something, especially in ministry, and it's this that's when you go, but it says lord, please remove any unnecessary nervousness oh, that's good, and I say that specifically because whatever necessary nervousness I need to have to keep me dependent on him, even though, like in my flesh, I don't want it.
- 4:23Speaker 1: But but I never want to get to a place where I'm just like, yep, here we, and it's like no dependence on the Lord no crying out to the Lord.
- 4:30Speaker 3: You ever found that you're alone in a pulpit, without God's help?
- 4:34Speaker 3: Boy you can feel that it's like a nightmare.
- 4:37Speaker 4: I feel like that happens to me 30 seconds before preaching every time, like I think about all the ways I relied on myself rather than him in my prep work and I'm like, oh Lord, help me, I need you now.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:48Speaker 4: I think the phrase God helps those who helps themselves.
- 4:52Speaker 4: I think the reason why people are gravitating towards that phrase is because they want self-discipline and responsibility, and certainly the modern man lacks discipline and responsibility.
- 5:04Speaker 4: But the phrase is fundamentally unbiblical for the reasons that you just said.
- 5:08Speaker 4: It was Mark.
- 5:09Speaker 4: The gospel teaches us that God helps the helpless, that we cannot save ourselves, that salvation is entirely of grace.
- 5:18Speaker 4: In other words, God doesn't just offer help, he rescues the powerless, and his grace will certainly allow us or motivate us to live in a responsible way.
- 5:28Speaker 4: I love to explain it like this the gospel is not a life raft out to a drowning man.
- 5:34Speaker 4: The gospel is a lung full of air to the man who's already drowned.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Wow, money is the root of all evil.
- 5:47Speaker 3: This has got to be up there with one of the top ones.
- 5:49Speaker 3: So many people quote that Money is the root of all evil.
- 5:52Speaker 1: They blame the money.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Blame the money.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:56Speaker 3: It's like we've got a litter problem.
- 5:58Speaker 3: No, we don't.
- 5:58Speaker 3: We have a lazy people problem, not a litter problem.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Don't blame the litter.
- 6:03Speaker 1: So what's the verse really say, ray?
- 6:04Speaker 1: What the love, oh, the love of money is the root of all evil.
- 6:08Speaker 1: All kinds of evil, as the modern versions say.
- 6:16Speaker 1: King James says of all evil.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Why is that, Mark?
- 6:17Speaker 2: Why is the love of money the root of all evil?
- 6:18Speaker 2: Well, it's a snare, isn't it?
- 6:19Speaker 2: It promises things that don't necessarily deliver.
- 6:22Speaker 4: This is, I think, a really hard one for American Christians to listen to and understand, because the comfort life, the good life, is an idol to us.
- 6:32Speaker 4: We want comfort, we want a good life, we want experience.
- 6:36Speaker 4: It's like how could not not be the precipice of everything that we are trying to accomplish, to be able to look at somebody and say God is more interested in your holiness than your happiness.
- 6:46Speaker 4: It's, it's discomforting, right, but it's ultimately true.
- 6:50Speaker 4: God is interested.
- 6:51Speaker 4: As someone else once said, he's more interested in your character than your comfort.
- 6:55Speaker 4: God means to make you more like who you were designed to be, more like his son, and his son himself experienced persecution and suffering and even death on the cross.
- 7:08Speaker 4: And so if that's true, then how much more?
- 7:11Speaker 4: Why wouldn't we expect to experience suffering in this world?
- 7:15Speaker 4: But if our focus, if our North Star, is happiness, we're going to be disappointed in this life as a Christian and not as a Christian, because life is uncomfortable in this fallen state.
- 7:27Speaker 4: But the promise of the gospel is that one day you will experience true joy, no more discomfort in heaven, and until then, the goal of God in your life is to make you more like his son.
- 7:40Speaker 4: He's more interested in your holiness than he is in your happiness.
- 7:44Speaker 3: I think it's summed up in the scripture riches profit not in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.
- 7:50Speaker 3: That's what we should be seeking to make sure we have the righteousness of Christ on the day of wrath.
- 7:55Speaker 2: And therefore it's possible to be joyful and not happy.
- 7:59Speaker 4: That's possible, right and so what I was going to get to earlier is inside of Ray's book.
- 8:03Speaker 2: God has a Wonderful Plan for your Life.
- 8:04Speaker 2: He talks about how, on April 12th 1912, is the date Titanic went down.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Whenever, right around that time, you think of the people inside the lifeboats and they're looking at their family go down in the North Atlantic, down into this icy grave.
- 8:19Speaker 2: If you were to stop everything, freeze, frame the event and interview the people inside the life raft and say, aren't you happy?
- 8:26Speaker 2: It's like, well, there's a joy that's inexpressible in that you know that you're saved, but don't, I can't say that I'm happy as I see my loved ones and my friends that I just made die right before my eyes.
- 8:38Speaker 2: You know I wasn't happy when I saw certain things inside my life right, I'm not happy in those, but I have a joy.
- 8:45Speaker 2: I have a joy and I have a certainty that God is at work and he is working all things together for my good, amen.
- 8:52Speaker 1: I think Peter captured it.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Well, you know, 1 Peter, 1, and this you greatly rejoice, though now, for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom, having not seen you love though now you do not see him yet believing you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory.
- 9:22Speaker 3: What sort of joy is that?
- 9:23Speaker 3: Could you explain it?
- 9:24Speaker 1: Yeah, so, but before that.
- 9:27Speaker 3: No, it's inexpressible.
- 9:28Speaker 3: You can't.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I can.
- 9:32Speaker 1: But the verse before the one I read.
- 9:35Speaker 1: He talked about how we have a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead to an inheritance and corruptible, undefiled and that will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you.
- 9:46Speaker 1: So sandwiched between that is the joy right, and he connects that with rejoicing in loving Jesus.
- 9:54Speaker 1: So what more do we need for joy?
- 9:57Speaker 1: And again, I love the fact you guys highlighted that, the reality that we can be sad and have joy, we can grieve, we can lament, we can experience emotional pain.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Though the fig tree does not blossom.
- 10:09Speaker 3: You know that verse, habakkuk.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Oh, one of my favorites.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Habakkuk, habakkuk.
- 10:13Speaker 1: But you know what I'm saying.
- 10:15Speaker 1: It's like, what more do we need than we're going to heaven?
- 10:21Speaker 1: And connected with what Peter is saying we don't see Jesus now.
- 10:27Speaker 1: We've never seen him.
- 10:27Speaker 1: We don't see him now.
- 10:28Speaker 1: We rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Why?
- 10:31Speaker 1: Because heaven is really Jesus.
- 10:34Speaker 1: We're going to go be with him and that's the joy that carries us through.
- 10:38Speaker 1: I'm weeping, I'm crying, I'm in pain, but I'm not undone, I'm not utterly destroyed, because I'm gonna go to be with Jesus, the one that I love, the one that loves me, who loved me I mean, paul says this who loved me and gave himself for me.
- 10:57Speaker 1: What more do we need?
- 10:59Speaker 3: That's the essence of our faith.
- 11:01Speaker 3: I'm just thinking the Bible verse if any man love not our Lord Jesus Christ, let him be anathema.
- 11:06Speaker 2: That's what scripture says.
- 11:09Speaker 3: So that's the essence of loving God with heart, mind, soul and strength, putting your affection upon Jesus, yeah.
