- 0:03SPEAKER_09: Bob Doe, 1995.
- 0:07SPEAKER_09: Clinton's comeback.
- 0:12SPEAKER_10: Ladies and gentlemen.
- 0:15SPEAKER_10: Ladies and gentlemen, it is my pleasure to introduce our own great senator and the next president of the United States, all goal.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Something else I learned the hard way, that while self-reliance is an essential part of the American character, so is the spirit of community that reaches out to those wounded in body or soul.
- 1:19SPEAKER_02: When I went off to war, it was to defend a community of values unique in all the world.
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: I came back sustained by the love and generosity of friends and neighbors who renewed my sense of life's possibilities.
- 1:42SPEAKER_09: And then the Oklahoma City bombing.
- 1:56SPEAKER_03: 168 kills, 680 injured, and another 324 buildings damaged or destroyed.
- 2:08SPEAKER_06: The bombing in Oklahoma City was an attack on innocent children and defenseless citizens.
- 2:17SPEAKER_06: It was an act of cowardice and it was evil.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: And over these years, they have given me the opportunities for service which I can never hope to repay.
- 2:34SPEAKER_02: And because they restored my spirit in a time of trial, I have dedicated myself to restoring the spirit of America.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: And so today.
- 3:39SPEAKER_07: So I now announce that I will resign from the Senate.
- 3:44SPEAKER_07: And I leave this institution.
- 3:47SPEAKER_07: Not with malice.
- 3:50SPEAKER_07: But with love.
- 3:54SPEAKER_07: Good luck.
- 3:56SPEAKER_07: Godspeed.
- 4:04SPEAKER_05: Senator, the first time you went public about this, we did that first interview, you and I together, and you said, I don't want to be remembered uh as the senator who was forced to resign.
- 4:15SPEAKER_05: Is that inevitable now?
- 4:16SPEAKER_08: Oh, yes, is it going to go down in history this way?
- 4:19SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 4:19SPEAKER_08: Would I like to be remembered for the uh author of the tax reform act and debt?
- 4:23SPEAKER_08: Would I like to be remembered for saving Hell's Canyon, uh, that great gorge between Oregon and Idaho you bet.
- 4:28SPEAKER_08: But I uh I understand after uh three years of headlines in the press uh that I won't go down remembered just for this one thing in this one case.
- 4:37SPEAKER_08: Do I like it?
- 4:37SPEAKER_08: No.
- 4:38SPEAKER_08: Can I stop it?
- 4:39SPEAKER_08: No.
- 4:40SPEAKER_08: Uh therefore go on with life.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: Well, I I was very important.
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: I said yesterday it's like uh football game.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: The first half played here, the second half played New Hampshire.
- 4:57SPEAKER_06: I always can be attached to the whole field.
- 4:59SPEAKER_06: We're gonna change Washington.
- 5:01SPEAKER_06: Senator Dole and Mr.
- 5:02SPEAKER_10: Forbes are just about to persuade everybody in Iowa that what they're saying about each other is actually true.
- 5:08SPEAKER_10: We're within the margin of Arab second uh fascinating.
- 5:16SPEAKER_09: You dump Rabin.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Four or five jobs ran out of Rabin collapsed into the arms of a security bank.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Rabin killed not by a Palestinian, but by a 24-year-old Israeli extremist who opposed the peace process.
- 5:30SPEAKER_06: The world has lost one of its greatest men.
- 5:34SPEAKER_06: A warrior for its nation's freedom, and now a martyr for his nation's peace.
- 5:44SPEAKER_02: The view many Americans see this morning is a sobering one.
- 5:50SPEAKER_02: We are troubled about the direction our country is taking.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: Our badges are under constant assault from our public and cultural institutions.
- 6:01SPEAKER_02: We feel threatened by the random incidents of violent crime.
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: Too many of our schools, which are once passports to opportunity, have become demoralizing places.
- 6:13SPEAKER_02: Welfare has become a misery subsidy, fostering illegitimacy and generations of dependency.
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: And yet the deficit keeps growing, taxes keep increasing, and the government keeps demanding more and more authority over our lives.
- 6:33SPEAKER_04: Ultimately, however, I had to look deep into my own soul, standing aside from the expectations and enthusiasm of others.
- 6:44SPEAKER_04: Because I believe I have a bond of trust with the American people.
- 6:57SPEAKER_04: The kind of passion and the kind of commitment that I felt every day of my 35 years of soldier.
- 7:04SPEAKER_04: Passion and commitment that despite my every effort, I do not yet have a political life.
- 7:12SPEAKER_04: Because such a life requires a calling that I do not yet hear.
- 7:26SPEAKER_04: Therefore, I cannot go forward.
- 7:29SPEAKER_04: I will not be a candidate for president or for any other elective office in 1996.
- 7:40SPEAKER_02: An America, an America with a strong heart.
- 7:45SPEAKER_02: Strong again in heart and sure of mind.
- 7:48SPEAKER_02: And I would like to lead us there.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: Good evening.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: President Clinton is about to address the nation from the Oval Office at the White House.
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: The President will be trying to convince a skeptical American public and Congress about the need to send about 20,000 U.S.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: troops to help oversee the Bosnian peace accord.
- 8:18SPEAKER_06: Last week, the warring factions in Bosnia reached a peace agreement as a result of our efforts in Dayton, Ohio, and the support of our European and Russian partners.
- 8:30SPEAKER_06: Tonight, I want to speak with you about implementing the Bosnian peace agreement and why our values and interests as Americans require that we participate.
- 9:17SPEAKER_06: Make it harder for families to do the work that they have to do, weaken our obligations to our parents and our children, and make our country more divided.
- 9:28SPEAKER_06: So I will continue to fight for the right balanced budget.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: He's on record for all of those.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: We just suggest that he settled on the seven-year plan and get on board and begin to work this out.
- 10:09SPEAKER_09: The year of his comeback.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: And what has been sacrificed to keep us free.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: And who would do all in his power to lead America back to her place in the sun.
- 10:29SPEAKER_02: My friends, I have the experience.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: I have been tested and tested and tested in many, many ways.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: I am not afraid to lead, and I know the way.
- 11:54SPEAKER_02: To ensure that the next century will dawn on a new beginning of American greatness, prosperity, and freedom.
- 12:02SPEAKER_02: Let us do it together.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: Let us begin today.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: God bless the United States of America.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: Thank you very much.
