- 0:05And we're back.
- 0:06We've not been asked to leave.
- 0:08I'm Jimmy Maas.
- 0:09And I'm Juan Garcia, and we are
- 0:10still in this room.
- 0:11Yes. And you're listening to
- 0:13episode two of
- 0:16¡Vamos Verde!
- 0:16What do we have on today's episode,
- 0:17Jimmy?
- 0:18Well, on this episode, we're
- 0:19speaking with one of the most
- 0:21prolific goalscorers in Major League
- 0:23Soccer history, Austin FC striker
- 0:25Gyasi Zardes.
- 0:26We also have some folks that
- 0:28have been bringing the soundtrack to
- 0:29Austin's nightlife for over 20
- 0:32years.
- 0:33That is Austin FC's official
- 0:34game day DJs, the collective
- 0:37Peligrosa.
- 0:38Hear them describe what it's like to
- 0:39rock a crowd 20,000 strong.
- 0:44That's a lot.
- 0:45That's a lot of people.
- 0:45That's a that's also a lot in this
- 0:47episode.
- 0:48Yeah.
- 0:48Stay tuned for all of it.
- 0:50Should be a good time.
- 1:01All right, Juan. Here we are.
- 1:02Episode two two draws
- 1:05for Austin FC in
- 1:06the bag by the middle of March.
- 1:09So first two points of the year.
- 1:10And speaking of the middle of March,
- 1:12we're in the middle of South by
- 1:13Southwest, which means,
- 1:15of course, music.
- 1:17And so much of it, not just
- 1:19music. We've got a bunch of events
- 1:21happening during this time.
- 1:22It's spring break.
- 1:23It's crazy.
- 1:24It's it's a little bit crazy if you
- 1:26try to do more than, like, two
- 1:27things at once.
- 1:28Oh, definitely.
- 1:29And Austin is trying to do seven
- 1:30things at the same time.
- 1:32So speaking of music, we brought
- 1:35Gyasi Zardes on the show today.
- 1:36Did you know he plays guitar
- 1:38and DJs?
- 1:39I didn't know until he was playing
- 1:41my guitar and telling us about
- 1:43his deejaying.
- 1:44And, and also
- 1:45speaking of deejays, we we we're
- 1:47like one DJ?
- 1:48that's not enough for a show during
- 1:49the middle of South by Southwest.
- 1:51Let's have four more.
- 1:53Another four.
- 1:54Yes.
- 1:54Which are only four of
- 1:56a bunch more within their own
- 1:58DJ collective.
- 1:59And we're deejay crazy here.
- 2:00It's DJ inception, deejays on
- 2:02deejays on deejays that make up
- 2:04the collective Peligrosa.
- 2:06And four of many who,
- 2:08rock the stadium as much as they
- 2:10can.
- 2:11Every home game, you can see them in
- 2:12the, by the zebra gate.
- 2:14All right. Our first guest is in
- 2:16his second season with Austin
- 2:18FC. After a long career of scoring
- 2:20goals with the L.A Galaxy,
- 2:22the Columbus Crew, and a short
- 2:24stint in Colorado,
- 2:26he is the 11th all time leading
- 2:28scorer in Major League Soccer
- 2:30history.
- 2:31He has two Major League
- 2:32Soccer championships.
- 2:34He has made 68
- 2:36appearances with the U.S.
- 2:37Men's National team, including one
- 2:39at Q2 Stadium in 2021,
- 2:41shortly after it opened, where he
- 2:43scored the winning goal over Qatar
- 2:45to push the team eventually
- 2:47to a Gold Cup title,
- 2:49his second on the national team.
- 2:52He is the man who bleached his hair
- 2:54so his grandma could figure out
- 2:56who he was on the pitch.
- 2:58He is Gyasi Zardes.
- 3:02So I guess
- 3:04we'll start with an easy question.
- 3:06Who do you hate most on the team?
- 3:10No, I, I don't hate anybody on the
- 3:12team, man.
- 3:13Really?
- 3:13Yeah.
- 3:14Everybody. Everyone.
- 3:15Yeah. I'm positive.
- 3:16I'm positive. And if you I mean,
- 3:18if you come across the team and
- 3:20you talk to the guys, the culture
- 3:22here, it's backed
- 3:24by that, that positivity.
- 3:25You know, we, we're in this together
- 3:28as soon as we, into
- 3:30the locker room, we're in this
- 3:30together. And especially the guys
- 3:32that step on the field, you know,
- 3:33the 11 guys on the field, they have
- 3:35each other's back.
- 3:36Because you got to think about
- 3:37it. Like, in today's society,
- 3:39people have such easy access
- 3:42to us, you know, as opposed to the
- 3:43guys back and,
- 3:45the late 90s, you know, where you
- 3:47can't get on, you know,
- 3:49an interview or you can't get on a
- 3:51social media platform to reach out
- 3:53to the players. So, you know,
- 3:54everybody get along here, and
- 3:56I'm cool with everybody.
- 3:59I feel like a lot of Austin
- 4:01fans, you know,
- 4:03kind of came into soccer when the
- 4:04team arrived. You know, they're
- 4:06they're not you know, basically
- 4:08the world before 2021
- 4:10is kind of a black box to them, you
- 4:11know. And
- 4:13so do you find it interesting
- 4:15that like, I mean, you
- 4:17are you're an international, a U.S.
- 4:19men's international.
- 4:20You are you you're one of 11 people
- 4:22to score 100 goals, you know, like,
- 4:25in MLS.
- 4:26Do you find it weird when you go out
- 4:27to dinner and whatnot that, like,
- 4:29you know, no one's?
- 4:31People asked like, I don't know, are
- 4:32you a musician? What's the worst
- 4:33thing that you get?
- 4:33Yeah.
- 4:34I think the worst was, a basketball
- 4:36player. I'm like, I'm only six foot.
- 4:38You know, how can I be a basketball
- 4:40player? That those guys are, like,
- 4:41six foot five, seven foot.
- 4:43But, yeah, you know, I,
- 4:45I've been toying around the city,
- 4:47and I go out to eat, if I'm not
- 4:48wearing a hat, you actually have,
- 4:50you know, people that have come up
- 4:51and they're they're very respectful
- 4:52here. You know, I've been in other
- 4:53cities where they're not respectful,
- 4:55you know, when I'm out with my family.
- 4:56But it's great that
- 4:58the people here, they actually
- 5:00understand soccer and and
- 5:02a lot of them attend actually our
- 5:04games. I have been to 1 or 2 games,
- 5:06you know, which is great because
- 5:08just to talk soccer with, like
- 5:10you said, American fans,
- 5:12if you look back, or not looked
- 5:13back. If I had an interaction with
- 5:15somebody like eight years ago.
- 5:18The depth of soccer is more European
- 5:20based. You know, we're talking about
- 5:21European soccer. But nowadays,
- 5:23when I come across a fan or someone,
- 5:25we're talking about American soccer,
- 5:26MLS, Austin FC, you know,
- 5:28and games we've played this year in
- 5:30previous years. So it's exciting.
- 5:32I have a list, here.
- 5:34These are the 11 guys with more than
- 5:36100 goals.
- 5:36Okay.
- 5:37And I think what's weird about this
- 5:39is the connection to you
- 5:41amongst them.
- 5:42This is just my own, you know, my
- 5:44own thought here.
- 5:45Yeah. So Landon
- 5:47Donovan, second
- 5:49former teammate.
- 5:51Then you have Bradley
- 5:52Wright-Phillips.
- 5:54You guys both had a cup
- 5:56of tea together. Yeah.
- 5:57Yeah.
- 5:58And then Edson Buddle
- 6:01another teammate.
- 6:02All these are, I mean, three of
- 6:04these people, we're working
- 6:06with you. One of them
- 6:08is you.
- 6:10And then Kai Kamara
- 6:12you guys have some hometown
- 6:13connection there.
- 6:15I don't mean I don't know.
- 6:16Do you guys hang out together?
- 6:17And have you ever made this this I'm
- 6:19sure you have at some point.
- 6:20Yeah. Yeah.
- 6:21Starting off with Landon Donovan,
- 6:23you know, I was lucky enough
- 6:25to obviously sign with
- 6:27my hometown club, L.A.
- 6:28Galaxy, but at the time,
- 6:30Landon Donovan was there, and he
- 6:32was a mentor of mine.
- 6:33You know, he kind of took me under
- 6:35his wing as I was growing up.
- 6:37Those early, those earlier
- 6:39years in my career, I played,
- 6:41you know, left, mid, right mid, but
- 6:44primarily left mid.
- 6:45And then I'll alternate with Landon,
- 6:47like, if he's up top and he's not
- 6:48getting a lot of touches on the
- 6:49ball, he'll come out to left mid
- 6:50like hey, can you switch.
- 6:52But you know during training
- 6:53sessions I used to always watch him
- 6:54and just listen to his advice.
- 6:55He would constantly give me advice
- 6:57and he was always willing to help
- 6:59me become a better player.
- 7:00You know, it wasn't it wasn't like a
- 7:02competition thing. It was more like,
- 7:03hey, G, you're on the team.
- 7:05I'm going to do what I can to help
- 7:06you be the best player you can be.
- 7:07And and, if
- 7:09you're the best player you can be,
- 7:10you can help this team, you know,
- 7:11win, championships.
- 7:13And I really respect that.
- 7:15And then we move on to, I think
- 7:16a year went by and then we signed Ed
- 7:18Zimbardo back to the team.
- 7:19And just to have another guy
- 7:21like Ed Zimbardo in the locker room
- 7:22and learn from him was great.
- 7:24You know, he was a guy that was
- 7:25always so positive, always smiling.
- 7:28You know, it was, I,
- 7:30I can't even remember a time he
- 7:32walked in mad or upset, you know,
- 7:34from a training session or a game.
- 7:35And so I just try to learn
- 7:37from a lot of those guys I consider
- 7:39legends of the game and try
- 7:41to implement, at least take one
- 7:43thing or two things from their game
- 7:45and apply it to, to my own.
- 7:47And I think that the, the last guy
- 7:49you mentioned was Kai Kamara.
- 7:50You know, I grew up in Hawthorne,
- 7:51California and Kai was a legend
- 7:53in Hawthorne, California, you know,
- 7:54still is.
- 7:56I went to Leuzinger High School.
- 7:57And I remember years, before
- 7:59I attended the school, he went to
- 8:01Leuzinger High School and, you know,
- 8:02part of his team.
- 8:03You know, they were doing huge
- 8:04things like, beating,
- 8:06beating high schools that, that we
- 8:08shouldn't even be beating,
- 8:10going to the, you know, the
- 8:11tournament,CIF I, I think it
- 8:13was called back the CIF tournaments.
- 8:15And not only that, he was the guy
- 8:17that I used to view myself as.
- 8:19Hey, he went pro, you
- 8:20know, he went to Leuzinger High
- 8:22School. I can do it too.
- 8:23And he would come back even.
- 8:25He played at Dominguez Hills.
- 8:26He signed, I believe, at Columbus
- 8:27Crew. But in the off season, he
- 8:29would come back to the high school
- 8:31and donate jerseys to us.
- 8:32So, and donate soccer gear to
- 8:34where, you know, that's kids
- 8:36growing up in Hawthorne were like,
- 8:38man, this is incredible.
- 8:39Like, we have, new
- 8:41Adidas gear, you know, and,
- 8:43because other schools in different
- 8:45school districts like Palos Verdes,
- 8:46Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach,
- 8:48you know, they were already
- 8:49outfitted with the best
- 8:51equipment and, you know, the
- 8:53best, fields and everything.
- 8:55So, we didn't have that in Kai.
- 8:57When he went pro, he gave love to
- 8:59the community and the the team
- 9:01that was coming up after him, which
- 9:03I thank him for. Because because of
- 9:04that, it allowed me to find success
- 9:07in high school, which later on,
- 9:09led me to go on and pursue,
- 9:12playing in college and then going
- 9:13pro. So he, he's a he was a huge
- 9:15role model of mine as well, you
- 9:16know, because he, he was
- 9:18the example for a lot of us growing
- 9:20up in Hawthorne, California, you
- 9:21know.
- 9:22Did your did your parents play
- 9:24did was there any of that as far as
- 9:26no guidance from them or?
- 9:27No. No, no.
- 9:28So they didn't play, but I
- 9:30thank my dad, because he was the one
- 9:32he would he was learning the game,
- 9:34you know, he was learning the game,
- 9:35reading books, getting, video tape.
- 9:38I'm the youngest, it's
- 9:40five of us, but I'm the fourth, and
- 9:42I'm the fourth boy. So he was
- 9:43teaching my older brothers
- 9:44everything, and it was kind of like
- 9:46I always say,
- 9:48he my older brothers were the
- 9:50experiment, and he finally got it
- 9:51right, you know, with me.
- 9:52But, it was great because
- 9:55he took me.
- 9:56I mean, back in the day, he took me
- 9:57to so many, so many soccer events,
- 10:00like way down in San Diego, Arizona.
- 10:03He did anything he can just to
- 10:05help me progress with soccer and
- 10:08try to get as much resources as
- 10:09possible as well.
- 10:10When you think about this path, I
- 10:12mean, do you think,
- 10:14I mean, is it a wonder
- 10:16that somehow they found you or do
- 10:18you are you think you pretty much
- 10:19you were on the way at some point.
- 10:21You knew that this is going to
- 10:22happen?
- 10:22No, I think of it it
- 10:24was kind of like a diamond in the
- 10:25rough because I wasn't
- 10:27on the radar like some of my
- 10:28teammates. And, because
- 10:30a lot of my teammates, you know,
- 10:32back in the day, they did ODP, a
- 10:33lot of my teammates made the
- 10:34national team, you know, and I never
- 10:36made it. And I was like, all right.
- 10:38That gave me motivation to keep my
- 10:39head down and keep working, you
- 10:41know, so that one day I do make the
- 10:42national team. So,
- 10:44it wasn't until I want to say maybe
- 10:4611th grade, when,
- 10:48you know, a lot of colleges start
- 10:50asking about me.
- 10:51I'm kind of at the tail end of 11th
- 10:53grade, 12th grade, even.
- 10:55And, and it
- 10:57was kind of late compared to other
- 10:58people, you know.
- 11:00But you showed them.
- 11:01Oh, yeah.
- 11:03I mean, and then I think about,
- 11:05you know, I, we didn't get it to
- 11:06like the greats that you played with
- 11:08in LA, Steven Gerrard
- 11:10or, Robbie Keane.
- 11:13I mean, you played with I mean,
- 11:14you're like this bridge between the
- 11:16old guard of the U.S.
- 11:17team, like the Clint Dempseys, the
- 11:19the Michael Bradley, and then the
- 11:21new guard, the Western McKinneys,
- 11:23and the Christian Pulisics of the
- 11:24world.
- 11:26How would you describe your role on
- 11:27the team in the locker room?
- 11:29Like, I mean.
- 11:30I mean, you're.
- 11:32There's a lot of not quite been
- 11:34there, done that energy to you.
- 11:35But you know, you have MLS cups.
- 11:37You have I mean you and Hector
- 11:39Jimenez like I think that's it.
- 11:41Yeah.
- 11:41The team. So I
- 11:43mean what what is your role in the
- 11:44locker room?
- 11:45Yeah. But for myself, you know, I'm,
- 11:48I'm not the most vocal person like
- 11:50rah rah rah.
- 11:50You know, I'm more.
- 11:51So I try to lead by example.
- 11:53You know, if I want to tell somebody
- 11:55to do something, I have to go do it
- 11:57first, because I've seen,
- 12:00players that that try to, you
- 12:02know, lead but don't set
- 12:04forth the example.
- 12:05So in my opinion, I feel
- 12:06like, yes, you need those guys on
- 12:08your team that that do screen that
- 12:10do talk, that do communicate.
- 12:11But my role is just to
- 12:13be a positive,
- 12:15a positive person that works
- 12:17extremely hard to know that
- 12:19if I'm going to step on the field,
- 12:20I'm going to give it my all for my
- 12:21teammates. And I feel like that
- 12:22energy, sets a
- 12:24domino effect.
- 12:25You know, if I'm going to work hard,
- 12:27my wingers behind me are going to
- 12:28run and work as hard as I'm working.
- 12:31And that's going to correlate to my
- 12:32senior midfielders, and it's going
- 12:33to go down to the defenders and the
- 12:35wing backs.
- 12:36So, that's that's kind
- 12:38of like the, the
- 12:40frame of thought that I think of
- 12:42when I step into the locker room.
- 12:43And, you know, I tell these young
- 12:44guys, I talk to the young guys a lot
- 12:46because that transition from
- 12:48coming from whether you're coming
- 12:49from college, a second team
- 12:51and your place in the first team
- 12:52locker room, especially in
- 12:53pre-season.
- 12:55I know those guys are probably
- 12:56thinking overthinking a bunch of
- 12:58things. So,
- 13:00whenever they're on my team during
- 13:01training sessions.
- 13:02If we're in the gym or something,
- 13:03I'm trying to constantly just talk
- 13:04to them. You know, I prefer to talk
- 13:06to players one on one,
- 13:08especially if they're on my
- 13:10team. Like a center man.
- 13:11I'm a think about this next time.
- 13:12Or do you see something?
- 13:13Because you can learn a lot from the
- 13:15younger players, too.
- 13:16You know, I used to be there and,
- 13:17and, you know,
- 13:20listening to somebody else's opinion
- 13:21might change your, your point of
- 13:23view on, on a player
- 13:25or something. So.
- 13:26Yeah.
- 13:27So, you don't big time the FC two
- 13:28players.
- 13:29Nah nah nah nah
- 13:31nah man.
- 13:33It's crazy that you mentioned like,
- 13:34all the accolades of my career
- 13:36because I go into every season,
- 13:39just thinking, like, I'm starting
- 13:40from scratch, you know?
- 13:42So it's crazy to hear that.
- 13:43God, you two MLS cups, you
- 13:45know, over 100 goals and stuff like
- 13:47that.
- 13:47Don't forget a Gold Cup.
- 13:48Yeah, Gold Cup as well.
- 13:49So that Gold Cup in there.
- 13:51To to the, the two Gold
- 13:53Cups are one that I think two.
- 13:54I'm going to give you two.
- 13:55If you say there's two.
- 13:56You got I think 17.
- 13:57They're on your trophy.
- 13:5817 of 19.
- 14:00Yeah. See like for example, like I
- 14:01can't even remember, you know, all
- 14:03those because I'm always hungry for
- 14:04more. And like I said,
- 14:06I just start from scratch, you know,
- 14:08000 across the board and just
- 14:10want to work to, you know,
- 14:12try to obtain more.
- 14:14How has your family
- 14:16adjusted to Austin?
- 14:18Yeah. I would say that
- 14:20I feel like they're finally
- 14:21adjusted. You know,
- 14:23my wife does an incredible job with
- 14:25our family, off the
- 14:27field. You know,
- 14:29we have four kids, and all of the
- 14:31kids are involved in activities.
- 14:33You know, they all go to school, but
- 14:34they also are heavily involved
- 14:36in activities. My oldest son, he
- 14:37plays with, the Austin FC
- 14:39Academy. You know, my daughters
- 14:41are dancers.
- 14:43And I don't know if you know too
- 14:44much about dancing.
- 14:45I'm learning about it.
- 14:46And I thought my schedule was
- 14:48hectic. I mean, my daughter is
- 14:49dancing from like, 4:00
- 14:51to 830 at night, and I'm talking
- 14:53four, five times a week, which,
- 14:56you know, I always ask her you love
- 14:57it. She's like, I love it, daddy.
- 14:58So I'm like, all right, hey, do you
- 14:59think I'm going to support you as
- 15:01best as I can, you know, but,
- 15:04and my youngest son is playing
- 15:05soccer now, too, so,
- 15:07I would say they're, they're really
- 15:09adjusting, and they, they finally,
- 15:11I feel like they finally have, you
- 15:12know, their group or their community
- 15:14of friends, that they can
- 15:17rely on and hang out with.
- 15:18And, you know, they they're excited
- 15:20about it.
- 15:20Yeah. And I'm, I'm sure
- 15:2315 years ago,
- 15:25you thought making
- 15:27the men's national team would be my
- 15:28greatest accomplishment.
- 15:29Scoring for the men's national team
- 15:31against Ecuador would be my greatest
- 15:33accomplishment.
- 15:34Scoring that first goal for club
- 15:36X will be my greatest...
- 15:37Then these kids come along.
- 15:39Yeah.
- 15:39And now, like, can you describe,
- 15:42like, is there anything that
- 15:44you play that describes the same
- 15:45feeling you get when you like, watch
- 15:46your kid dance or whatever?
- 15:48Yeah. Oh yeah man.
- 15:49It's it's wild.
- 15:50Like you said, your
- 15:52whole your whole
- 15:54thought process changes when you
- 15:55become a parent and especially when
- 15:57you're looking at, you know, your
- 15:58child and you see
- 16:00all the hard work they do.
- 16:01For example, I got to see for the
- 16:03first time actually this past year,
- 16:05because the previous year and I
- 16:06never had a chance to watch my
- 16:08daughter perform because I was
- 16:09always like, gone with the national
- 16:10team, are gone with my club, and
- 16:13I got to see her perform twice
- 16:15and the,
- 16:17the butterflies and the jitters that
- 16:19I got just from sitting in the
- 16:20crowd, like.
- 16:21Like I know her routine because you
- 16:22probably sit at home and I'm, like,
- 16:24watching while, you know, a thousand
- 16:26other people are watching her on
- 16:27stage, you know?
- 16:29Yeah. Mind you, she's only seven,
- 16:31right? And she's owning the stage
- 16:33like she's been there for ten
- 16:35years.
- 16:36And I'm just, I don't know, it's
- 16:37kind of like taking a huge
- 16:39block for a final.
- 16:40That's the kind of feeling I got.
- 16:41Seeing her on the stage, performing.
- 16:44And then once she was done and.
- 16:45And she killed the routine and
- 16:47crushed it.
- 16:48Is is so relieving.
- 16:50You know, it's because I get to see
- 16:51all the the hard work and
- 16:53the sacrifices she's already making
- 16:54at a young age.
- 16:55And to see her perform on
- 16:57stage with a big smile on her face
- 16:59and score. Well, it's it's,
- 17:01an incredible feeling.
- 17:02You, you have a son who is
- 17:04on an academy
- 17:07team.
- 17:09I'm guessing just by
- 17:11age and circumstance, you're the
- 17:12only player to actually have a kid
- 17:14in the system.
- 17:17In the Austin system.
- 17:19Would that be correct?
- 17:20Yeah.
- 17:22Yeah.
- 17:23Player wise, yeah, yeah, there's a
- 17:24couple coaches.
- 17:25So he might. He might.
- 17:26The coaches. Sure, absolutely.
- 17:27Yeah. Yes. But, you know, they're
- 17:29they're old heads.
- 17:30Yeah. Like me.
- 17:32But, I,
- 17:35your your son, your the son in the
- 17:36academy probably has a clue,
- 17:38but do your kids understand what a
- 17:40big deal you might be?
- 17:45I say yes, and then I say no.
- 17:48I say yes when
- 17:50I'm maybe walking around the stadium
- 17:52and asking people, and people are
- 17:53asking for photos, or if I'm out and
- 17:54people are asking for photos,
- 17:55they're starting to understand it
- 17:57just because the they they were
- 17:59younger, but now they're a little
- 18:00older and they understand like,
- 18:02okay, why do they want
- 18:04pictures with you? And I'm like,
- 18:05they're fans, you know, of our team
- 18:07and stuff. But now my son and
- 18:09my oldest daughter really understand
- 18:10that because now they actually
- 18:13if a fan, for example, after
- 18:14the game, I always go to my family,
- 18:16you know, and greet them.
- 18:18But if my daughter
- 18:20or my oldest son see a kid that want
- 18:22to autograph, they actually pull my
- 18:23shirt. They're like, daddy, daddy,
- 18:25he wants your he wants you to sign
- 18:27something. Or like that kid over
- 18:28there wants the photo.
- 18:29so they're actually.
- 18:30They understand now.
- 18:33Nice. Do you think all of them will
- 18:34find their way eventually to soccer?
- 18:36Oh, I'm trying hard on my girls.
- 18:39There's hope with my youngest
- 18:40daughter.
- 18:41But my boys, I mean, my boys are
- 18:42left footed.
- 18:44They're special already.
- 18:45I can see it already.
- 18:46I'm like, man, the game just come
- 18:47natural to them.
- 18:49Meanwhile, I have to work for
- 18:50everything, you know?
- 18:51But I see my boys going on
- 18:53and pursuing soccer.
- 18:54But my girls,
- 18:56I think dance have taken
- 18:58over.
- 19:00So these are questions
- 19:02from my kids' soccer team.
- 19:03Okay.
- 19:04I have two daughters.
- 19:06They play on three teams.
- 19:07At least right now.
- 19:09Hi, my name is Vera, and I play
- 19:11soccer for Lonestar.
- 19:13My question is, what is your
- 19:15favorite pre-game song?
- 19:18Favorite pre-game song?
- 19:20I would say at the moment,
- 19:22like this last season I listened to
- 19:24like, Kendrick Lamar.
- 19:25He has, a song called Count
- 19:27Me Out and it's
- 19:29like, I think the chorus says,
- 19:31I love em when they count me out.
- 19:33And it's kind of like
- 19:35being an underdog going
- 19:36into every situation, like, hey,
- 19:38people don't want you to succeed,
- 19:39but you know that that gives me
- 19:41motivation to go out there and
- 19:43prove,
- 19:45to, you know, the fans, the people
- 19:46out there like, hey, I deserve to be
- 19:48on the field. And also I deserve to,
- 19:51find success on the field and us
- 19:53win, you know, because,
- 19:56Austin is such a great team,
- 19:58such a great city, such a great
- 20:00environment at the stadium.
- 20:01And so when I correlate that song
- 20:03to, you know, pulling up to the
- 20:05stadium is kind of like people don't
- 20:06want to see Austin succeed, but yet
- 20:08we're going to we are going to
- 20:09succeed, we're going to overcome,
- 20:11and we're going to win.
- 20:12So yeah.
- 20:13Kendrick Lamar, Compton, how
- 20:15far is that from Hawthorne?
- 20:17Five, ten minutes.
- 20:18Okay. Yeah. Just down the road.
- 20:19Kind of.
- 20:20You guys ever run into each other?
- 20:22Me and him? No.
- 20:24Well, it's been a lot of time.
- 20:25We might make that happen.
- 20:26I don't know, Carson.
- 20:27Yeah.
- 20:28All right, here's our next question.
- 20:32I'm Violet. I play for one world
- 20:34and Kealing middle school soccer.
- 20:36And my question is, what
- 20:38gives you the motivation to keep
- 20:40playing to go to pro?
- 20:42The motivation for me was, was,
- 20:44I grew up in Los Angeles.
- 20:48It's a lot of sports in Los Angeles,
- 20:49but it's a huge Latin presence
- 20:52to where once I fell in love with
- 20:53soccer, I ate, slept, and dreamed
- 20:56soccer.
- 20:57You know, Ronaldinho was a
- 20:59huge, player
- 21:01that I used to look up to.
- 21:02Barcelona. Yeah.
- 21:03I mean, just the Brazilian culture
- 21:05as well, you know, I
- 21:07was so infatuated with how they
- 21:08controlled the ball and how they
- 21:09play with a smile on their face.
- 21:11Whether good things or bad things,
- 21:13they just enjoying living in the
- 21:14moment, playing the beautiful sport.
- 21:15So, Ronaldinho was a huge
- 21:17inspiration of mine. I use to watch
- 21:19all his games and just try to
- 21:20imitate him. You know, when I,
- 21:22whether I'm playing
- 21:24futsal on tennis courts, are
- 21:26playing, you know, soccer 1111
- 21:28and, I love it.
- 21:30Contractually, are you allowed to
- 21:32still play on concrete?
- 21:34I'm not sure, but, I mean, I'm sure
- 21:36we all still do it.
- 21:39You got any other skills?
- 21:40What else makes you tick?
- 21:41Like, as far as.
- 21:42Well, yeah.
- 21:43You play any instruments?
- 21:44I know you DJ.
- 21:46Yeah, I enjoy deejaying.
- 21:48Guitar. You know, I it was crazy.
- 21:50My dad bought, he bought my first
- 21:51guitar in the seventh grade and
- 21:53I was. So it was, it was a
- 21:55Christmas. I was so mad because my
- 21:56older brother got the drum set, and
- 21:58all I wanted was a drum set, you
- 22:00know, I was I was fuming, but, you
- 22:02know, years went by and
- 22:03I will always pick up the guitar for
- 22:05like maybe a year, then put it down
- 22:07for a year, you know.
- 22:08But when I got to college,
- 22:10I purchased, like, an acoustic
- 22:11guitar, from the Guitar Center.
- 22:13And that's when I really honed in
- 22:15on, like, man, I actually see why
- 22:17my dad got me a guitar because it
- 22:18mellows me out.
- 22:19Just learning new. So, new songs,
- 22:21new chords.
- 22:22And now my daughters are like, hey,
- 22:24dad, let's let's play a song.
- 22:25So they love singing, like, whether
- 22:27it's Taylor Swift or somebody else.
- 22:28I have to go learn the acoustic
- 22:30version of the song and I'll play
- 22:32for them. You know, you.
- 22:33You ever play a duet with your daughters.
- 22:35Yeah. Well, I mean, they at
- 22:37the moment, we've been diving,
- 22:38so I love all genres of music, but
- 22:40we've been diving into since we
- 22:42moved here. We've been diving more
- 22:43into.
- 22:44So, guys, I think
- 22:46it's like Miranda Lambert.
- 22:48If I was a cowboy.
- 22:49If I was a cowboy.
- 22:50Okay, my daughter loves that.
- 22:52She just walks around with cowboy
- 22:53boots singing it like.
- 22:55Yeah. So that's that's one we play a
- 22:57lot.
- 22:58Well, you're in luck, because we
- 23:00have a, former Guitar Center
- 23:01employee here.
- 23:02Yeah, producer Juan Garcia as
- 23:04well. Wondering
- 23:06if you might play us
- 23:08a few bars.
- 23:09And it doesn't have to be one of
- 23:10your duets with your daughters.
- 23:11Of what song?
- 23:12Whatever you'd like.
- 23:14Okay.
- 23:14Yeah, we're going to plug you in
- 23:15here.
- 23:15All right.
- 23:18Is it twtuned already? No idea.
- 23:23Yeah. I mean. [guitar strumming]
- 23:42Does it sound fine or do you want me to turn down?
- 23:45Let me see.
- 23:46What else.
- 23:47Fingerpicking.
- 23:48Yeah.
- 23:50Yeah.
- 23:56Maybe that might not work on this.
- 23:58What else?
- 24:00I play a lot of sublime and reggae,
- 24:03like bar music, but
- 24:05I kind of figure out because usually
- 24:07I have, like, the guitar app in
- 24:09front of me.
- 24:09Yeah, yeah.
- 24:11Yeah.
- 24:12That's right.
- 24:12Yeah, yeah. Better than I could do
- 24:13on the spot.
- 24:15We forced you into this.
- 24:16No. Thank you guys.
- 24:17That was fun.
- 24:19I need to get my guitar out more.
- 24:21We've been on the DJ thing heavy.
- 24:23But now that you've brought
- 24:25out the guitar, I'm going to whip it
- 24:26out.
- 24:27Yeah.
- 24:28On a year where you're putting it
- 24:29down, or on a year where you're
- 24:30picking it up a lot.
- 24:31No, it's it's right now is down.
- 24:33Yeah.
- 24:34It's kind of, it's busy.
- 24:35It's, pre-season and
- 24:37everything. Christmas, Thanksgiving.
- 24:40You don't have too much time for it,
- 24:41but now I'm going to pick it up.
- 24:42Yeah. I have a couple,
- 24:44a Taylor acoustic and then a Gibson
- 24:46electric.
- 24:47Oh, nice. Yeah.
- 24:48Nice.
- 24:48But, I mean, once you like,
- 24:50I do ultimate guitar tab.
- 24:52I got me too.
- 24:53Yeah.
- 24:53So, like, once I start playing
- 24:54again, I'll bring out my tab,
- 24:57and then I'll play it on the I've
- 24:58put on the table, and then I'll play
- 25:00like I like the music.
- 25:01Yeah. Yeah.
- 25:02That's how you do it.
- 25:03Hoping one day I'll come back to the
- 25:05forefront. Like when the kids are
- 25:06older in high school and, like, have
- 25:08friends over, you know, have a
- 25:10little bonfire going.
- 25:11You got enough kids to start a band.
- 25:13That's true. I and I tried that.
- 25:15I was like, hey, my oldest
- 25:17daughter could play the piano, my
- 25:19son could play the drums, and then
- 25:21my other daughter can play like the
- 25:22bass on the. But they didn't want
- 25:24any parts.
- 25:26The recordings exist of this band.
- 25:28Yeah.
- 25:28Zardes family band.
- 25:31Z band or something?
- 25:32Who knows? The live music capital in
- 25:34the world of the world can do some
- 25:36crazy things to people.
- 25:36That's true. You're absolutely
- 25:38right.
- 25:38Cool. Appreciate the time.
- 25:40Yeah. No problem.
- 25:40Thank you guys. Thank you.
- 25:41Thank you.
- 25:44That was fun.
- 25:45I enjoyed that, and he was really,
- 25:47complimentary of your crappy guitar.
- 25:49Yeah. Yeah.
- 25:50That is not the best guitar.
- 25:52But still, he seemed to.
- 25:53And we surprised him with it.
- 25:55He was not expecting it.
- 25:56That was. That was.
- 25:57I applaud him for for playing along.
- 25:59I mean, he did better than I could
- 26:01in, like, a sudden
- 26:03if you had, like, surprised me with
- 26:05a guitar, I don't know if I had
- 26:06done.
- 26:06Had we only known he wouldn't needed
- 26:08an acoustic.
- 26:09I know.
- 26:09Yeah, but you did.
- 26:11We did our best. Whatever.
- 26:13Anyway, we'll have more.
- 26:16What will we have more?
- 26:17What are we doing next?
- 26:18Juan?
- 26:21We'll have more after the break.
- 26:24Our next guests.
- 26:25Guests, plural have
- 26:27been bringing the soundtrack to
- 26:28Austin's nightlife for over 20
- 26:30years, and for the past three years,
- 26:32they've been part of the sound that
- 26:34makes Q2 Stadium one of the best
- 26:36environments in Major League Soccer.
- 26:38We spoke to Manolo Black,
- 26:40Pagame, Manny Dojo and Orion
- 26:42Garcia from Austin FC's official
- 26:44Game Day DJ collective, Peligrosa.
- 26:49What's the best way to call it?
- 26:50DJ syndicate what?
- 26:51What's what do we want to.
- 26:52What? What is this?
- 26:54I like these syndicate.
- 26:55Yeah.
- 26:56Now, this Wu-Tang clan of deejays
- 26:59crews in the South.
- 27:01Us. In Austin.
- 27:05[crosstalk] Yeah, there's a lot in
- 27:06there, but I enjoy it.
- 27:08I always explain it as a collective
- 27:10of artists that, you know, we
- 27:12we are on the same mission, you
- 27:14know, of, like, pushing
- 27:17Latino and global
- 27:19culture, you know, in, in whatever
- 27:21we do, whether it's, with music,
- 27:24with art, with our just ourselves,
- 27:26you know, and all of us bring
- 27:28like, something different to the
- 27:29table. And it's
- 27:31what makes the magic.
- 27:33How long is the group been at it?
- 27:35How long you guys been going?
- 27:36This is Orion.
- 27:38We just celebrated our 16 year
- 27:40anniversary in December.
- 27:42Every day I'm amazed and intrigued
- 27:44by it.
- 27:45Because we started out as a
- 27:46collective and mid-point.
- 27:48We started thinking
- 27:50more, fundamentally
- 27:53about the business aspect of it,
- 27:56while consciously not
- 27:58pushing capitalism necessarily
- 28:02and remaining a collective
- 28:04of artists, you know, some of the,
- 28:05some of the ideology in those two
- 28:07things, a collective and a business
- 28:09are at odds with each other.
- 28:11But the fun part about doing it with
- 28:13the crew who gets to express
- 28:14himself, how are they? What do their
- 28:16art is?
- 28:17It manifests in unique, different
- 28:19ways, sometimes with unexpected
- 28:21ways. You know.
- 28:22For the uninitiated,
- 28:24how does a crew work
- 28:26a show together?
- 28:27Explain that to me.
- 28:29It used to be, this is Jaime.
- 28:32I mean, nowadays it is kind of like
- 28:34slotted times.
- 28:34Like what? We just trade off as
- 28:36quickly as we can.
- 28:37Before, it was a lot more what you
- 28:39would call round robin to where
- 28:41you duck in and you have multiple
- 28:43decks like you add on top of each
- 28:44other.
- 28:46And I'm like
- 28:48more often than not, if you're in
- 28:50sync with another person, like
- 28:51you'll be queuing up the same exact
- 28:53song just because you both think of
- 28:54that. Like, that happens multiple
- 28:56times too.
- 28:57Yeah, and I think it's just like
- 28:59sharing your time that way.
- 29:00And it was like before there were
- 29:03like 9 or 10 of us out on
- 29:05stage at a time.
- 29:06Whenever it was like 4 or
- 29:085, it was easier to do a round
- 29:10robin, that it would be like you
- 29:11duck in for 2 or 3 songs.
- 29:13There'd be like, ooh, I got
- 29:14something, and then you roll in
- 29:16and then you just basically like,
- 29:17pull in on top of each other and
- 29:19it's like it's a cordial dance, like
- 29:21a give and take.
- 29:22It's like, yes or no.
- 29:23And you kind of have just like
- 29:24visual cues or hand like
- 29:26motions that you'll be like, no, no,
- 29:27no, not yet. Or, you know,
- 29:29stop there, go there.
- 29:30Oh yeah, that's good.
- 29:31Like just kind of roll it.
- 29:33You know.
- 29:33This is trait that's most
- 29:35exciting for me.
- 29:36Now we're kind of, we're at Coconut
- 29:38Club once a month, and their booth
- 29:40is small, so it doesn't really allow
- 29:43for multiple setups.
- 29:44But I remember a show where we would
- 29:46have three sets of turntables
- 29:49on the stage with percussion,
- 29:51and a stage was big enough to
- 29:53where people could come and hang
- 29:54with us, and we just allowed the
- 29:55party to kind of be on the stage as
- 29:57well as, you know, and
- 29:59on the dance floor.
- 30:00But yeah. So, I think that's
- 30:02probably.
- 30:03Creekside as well.
- 30:04Yeah.
- 30:05My yeah. The thing that I love most
- 30:07about this crew is that
- 30:08collaboration like we've had
- 30:10just for because of space purposes,
- 30:12we've kind of had to go, okay,
- 30:14you're on for about 2030
- 30:16and then next one.
- 30:17But my favorite is when
- 30:19each each person plays two songs
- 30:21and ok tag your next.
- 30:23And it's challenging, but
- 30:25it's also fun when it all just like
- 30:27works. You know.
- 30:28It's more like a mental workout too.
- 30:30Yeah, because it's like it is fun to
- 30:32like, try and get in where you fit
- 30:33in.
- 30:34And if you're not in
- 30:36that headspace, then it's like,
- 30:38you got to take it almost like you.
- 30:40You take you make yourself take
- 30:42a back seat.
- 30:43It reminds me of like, dynamics that
- 30:45I've been in, in like bands
- 30:47with instruments that like
- 30:48non-verbal communication that like
- 30:50being in sync with one another, like
- 30:52queueing certain things up or like
- 30:54giving those, those signals.
- 30:56Am I on to something there?
- 30:57Is that kind of how do you guys
- 30:58function?
- 30:58Exactly the same, I think in
- 31:00even in so much to say
- 31:03like if you're in a band
- 31:05and you play trumpet and
- 31:07it's your time to play.
- 31:09You have essentially two options.
- 31:11Do I roll and
- 31:13fit and match what's happening
- 31:15currently or do I?
- 31:16Am I the jumping point for something
- 31:18new or different?
- 31:19Am I going to be the one to take it
- 31:21in a different order?
- 31:21I mean, it's different when you're performing
- 31:23songs that have been rehearsed, but,
- 31:24you know,
- 31:26there's a lot of similarities.
- 31:29Jazz, man.
- 31:30Pretty much. It's like, you know, it
- 31:31really is.
- 31:32I mean, you have access to all the.
- 31:33Instruments and then just just
- 31:35cut it and you know, it's in there
- 31:37and it's that energy that that skill
- 31:38set up, you know, and this is
- 31:40Manny.
- 31:41And then also, you know, we all
- 31:42bring like when people see
- 31:44us on stage and having fun and
- 31:46having that interaction, you know,
- 31:47and some of us, you know,
- 31:49kind of connect with the crowd, you
- 31:51know, and you know, we put their
- 31:53hands up or, you know, sometimes
- 31:55I even going like, all right,
- 31:56everybody get low.
- 31:57I know, you know, get low.
- 31:59And like, you see everybody getting
- 32:00low and getting down and they just
- 32:01like, you know, like, are you ready
- 32:03when the beat goes off, I want
- 32:04everybody to jump on their like
- 32:05whoa, you know, so
- 32:07you just hyping them up a little
- 32:08bit.
- 32:08And when you ask
- 32:10the crowd to get low
- 32:12and they don't get low.
- 32:15Maybe there's like one guy in the
- 32:16back and you're like that [bleep]
- 32:18guy that
- 32:20you.
- 32:20Play two stage.
- 32:22Yeah.
- 32:23He has a bad back, you know.
- 32:24Kid, maybe you're right.
- 32:25He can't physically.
- 32:26That's my thinking.
- 32:27That's that's what really?
- 32:28That's all right. You're not going
- 32:29to, like, confront this.
- 32:31That's all right with me.
- 32:33You know, but it's I don't know for
- 32:35the most part, but I kind of feel
- 32:37it out, like it has to be pretty
- 32:38packed and people are dancing.
- 32:40It's not my first go to, you know
- 32:42what I mean? You know, I think I
- 32:43first got to's like, what's up
- 32:45everybody. You know, make some noise
- 32:46for yourself.
- 32:47You know you're looking good.
- 32:48If you feel good, make some noise
- 32:50like, you know you kind of feel it
- 32:51out a little bit. See what you're.
- 32:53That's Orion's.
- 32:55Yeah. That's my that's my line.
- 32:56That's his line? Yeah.
- 32:57You feel good?
- 32:58You look good.
- 32:59It's like already like Bill
- 33:01and Teddy.
- 33:01Already like Bill and Ted.
- 33:02Yeah, yeah.
- 33:03Just get three already.
- 33:05Hard to keep my breathing steady.
- 33:06I mean, like, I feel good.
- 33:08I look good today.
- 33:09Just be just off of that.
- 33:10So, like, okay, it works, you know?
- 33:12Yeah.
- 33:12Osmosis is a real thing.
- 33:13Especially in the DJ setting
- 33:16where it's like, not all
- 33:18like we'd rather be.
- 33:19I speak for myself. I'd rather be
- 33:20heard than seen.
- 33:22So like, the whole Booth elevated
- 33:24thing is not really my.
- 33:26I just want to be down on the ground
- 33:27with the crowd, feeling what they
- 33:29want to hear, playing what I want to
- 33:30play, and seeing if those two things
- 33:32match up and we're all going to have
- 33:33a good night.
- 33:34Yeah. A second ago, you you
- 33:35mentioned how, you know, you
- 33:37sometimes you're in sync, like
- 33:39you're getting ready a song, you're
- 33:40getting a song ready that, maybe
- 33:42you had already, you
- 33:44just switched over to.
- 33:46So, has
- 33:48there ever been a time
- 33:50where that
- 33:52just didn't work?
- 33:55You, you went to something
- 33:57that was just, oh, like,
- 33:59like all off, and
- 34:02the rest of you were just like,
- 34:05come on.
- 34:07That's the risk. That's the risk?
- 34:08Yeah.
- 34:10Risk and reward, man. And at that time,
- 34:11it's like, man, you got to shrug
- 34:12that [bleep] off. Like it's fun.
- 34:14It's like, all right, I know I did
- 34:16bad, but it was a good time, wasn't
- 34:18it?
- 34:19I don't know, man.
- 34:20I love I mean, I'll be honest, I
- 34:22love a good [bleep] killer song.
- 34:25But that also it when it hits,
- 34:27you know, it's like, man, I can't.
- 34:29That thing went off, you know?
- 34:30So yeah, it's like if
- 34:33if you don't take the risk, you
- 34:34won't get the glory almost, you
- 34:36know, but then you also if you
- 34:37didn't hit then.
- 34:38Yeah. You have to take the L.
- 34:40All right.
- 34:40Yeah. Yeah. Any combos that just
- 34:42you just like memorable like
- 34:43clunkers.
- 34:45Like, I don't know, like.
- 34:46Yeah. Yeah. Like just things that
- 34:47just didn't.
- 34:48I, I definitely have songs
- 34:50that I like to play that I know
- 34:51people don't like, but I love the
- 34:53song, you know?
- 34:53Sure.
- 34:54It's kind of my right
- 34:56to be the loudest person in the
- 34:57room. I had the right to just play
- 34:58it.
- 34:59I think like any juke, because it's
- 35:01like, man, I know that you and
- 35:02myself will like, I'll try and
- 35:04shoehorn it in every now and again.
- 35:06It's a very particular time you can
- 35:08throw.
- 35:08But the thing is, it's like when you
- 35:09get it in and you can get people
- 35:10like on board with like Chicago
- 35:12juke, like proper.
- 35:14And it's just like at first you
- 35:16see people kind of shift
- 35:18like, oh man, I'm really like
- 35:20just kind of stuck in molasses.
- 35:22And then you'll see people start to
- 35:23move on things.
- 35:24BPM's around 150, maybe.
- 35:26160.
- 35:27160.
- 35:28The, you know, it just super fast.
- 35:29I'm not I'm not familiar.
- 35:31It's also called like fast
- 35:32footwork.
- 35:33Yeah. Where you see like the like
- 35:35people dancing and it's
- 35:36kind of like the
- 35:37[ingidstinguishable] kind of deal.
- 35:39Yeah. And like it's kind of like a
- 35:41weird.
- 35:41He's going to break stuff.
- 35:43Yeah. Okay.
- 35:43I'm going to just describe what's
- 35:45happening.
- 35:47I mean he got up.
- 35:48There's there's a man.
- 35:50There's a man.
- 35:50He's looking like he's possessed by
- 35:52a marionette.
- 35:53He is about to speak in tongues.
- 35:56It's kind of like that.
- 35:57It he does look like a marionette.
- 35:58That's that's accurate.
- 35:59Yeah.
- 35:59Doom doom doom doom doom doom.
- 36:01This is like the drum, the beat.
- 36:03It's just like 160 bpm.
- 36:05So that's like,
- 36:07just like maybe faster.
- 36:08We have a we have a side record
- 36:10label called Discos Peligroso.
- 36:12And I wrote an album with a
- 36:13guy who came from Chicago, lives
- 36:15in San Antonio.
- 36:17And we put a record out kind of
- 36:18combining like.
- 36:19[music plays] We're
- 36:35philosophically similar,
- 36:37in that we
- 36:39are still of the understanding
- 36:41that deejaying is about breaking
- 36:43records. Yeah, there's times
- 36:45to play the stuff that's already
- 36:47well known, but there's times
- 36:49to play new stuff and there's
- 36:50times to play things you
- 36:52know other people haven't heard.
- 36:55And that's kind of,
- 36:57the with the democratization
- 37:00of the gear that, you know,
- 37:01is more accessible.
- 37:04Like those philosophies have been
- 37:06lost on another generation,
- 37:08not for better or worse, just
- 37:09different.
- 37:10So and, you know, how
- 37:12does that taste
- 37:14change over 20 years?
- 37:16Like how do you continuously evolve
- 37:18to stay kind of on that cutting edge
- 37:20and not ever fall back into what
- 37:22everybody else is playing?
- 37:23I don't necessarily know that it's
- 37:25staying on the cutting edge.
- 37:27Like, that's not the mindset.
- 37:29I would think it's kind of like, how
- 37:30do you teach a DJ to dig?
- 37:32Like you don't like the people that
- 37:34go and find new music like, and
- 37:36that's doesn't necessarily pertain
- 37:37to just deejays.
- 37:39That's like people in general who
- 37:40are into music.
- 37:41Yeah, you're constantly wanting new,
- 37:43new, new things.
- 37:45You're just like like it's a
- 37:46dopamine rush.
- 37:47Like you're just like, ooh, what's a
- 37:48hot new thing? And it's not
- 37:49necessarily what's a hot new thing?
- 37:51So I can show it to other people.
- 37:53It's just like, I want to consume
- 37:54this for myself.
- 37:56And then as deejays, we have
- 37:58the ability to like, oh, let me show
- 38:00you this thing.
- 38:01Like, ooh, this is really dope like,
- 38:03I, you know, I would like to show
- 38:04you what I'm into
- 38:06versus, like, staying
- 38:08on top of it.
- 38:09Like, I guess now that I think about
- 38:11it, I'm really into kind of like
- 38:11cumbia rebajada, you
- 38:13know, it's more like a darker,
- 38:16you know, it has like a just like a
- 38:17chunky.
- 38:18It's chopped and screwed cumbia,
- 38:19essentially.
- 38:19Okay.
- 38:20Yeah. You know, I just got, like, a
- 38:22weird. [music]
- 38:41It's actually a fun story
- 38:43from Duéñez, the guy who's
- 38:45credited for
- 38:47cumbia rebajada, who lives in
- 38:48Monterrey.
- 38:49Who, you know, the folklore
- 38:51because there's there's a there's a
- 38:52folklore.
- 38:53He created screw. Yeah, yeah.
- 38:55Folklore with the accordion as well.
- 38:57Yeah. Controversial.
- 38:58And I like that there's like, every
- 38:5950 years is another controversy
- 39:01based on a music genre.
- 39:02But like, his table, like his
- 39:04turntable got, like someone spilled
- 39:05a beer on it or something, and and
- 39:07and something blew.
- 39:09Something busted that it was like a
- 39:10capacitor, that it was like, rolling
- 39:12at a really slow speed.
- 39:14But he was also playing 45s.
- 39:17This is Jaime.
- 39:18I had heard another story as well
- 39:20that was like, oh, the 45
- 39:23busted. So he could only play
- 39:24on 33.
- 39:26And then I heard another one that it
- 39:28was actually rebejadas
- 39:30came from people wanting to
- 39:32extend the long songs to be
- 39:34longer because they were like,
- 39:36[bleep], they didn't have enough
- 39:37time. Like, let's say it's a 218
- 39:39or three minute song and they're
- 39:40still digging through.
- 39:41And then they were like, yo, let's
- 39:42play it at 33.
- 39:44Like, I've heard multiple lores
- 39:46about like rebejadas, but I still
- 39:47to this day believe that it was
- 39:49like, I can't imagine
- 39:51that DJ Screw from
- 39:53Houston did not hear
- 39:55like slow [bleep] cumbias,
- 39:56rebejadas, playing
- 39:58and wasn't like...
- 39:59[crosstalk]
- 40:00Anyone who's ever played with
- 40:02records who grew up, I mean, when I
- 40:04was, when I was like 8 or 9 years
- 40:06old, I used to play my stuff
- 40:07on 33, like my fault, just to see
- 40:10what it sounds like. [crosstalk] So
- 40:12I think it's it's experimentation.
- 40:14And just because it arrived
- 40:17in one part of the country and
- 40:19or in a different part of the world,
- 40:21they could have simultaneously came
- 40:23together. Funny that there's like I
- 40:24don't think like.
- 40:25I think there's probably more
- 40:27relation than
- 40:30just like, coincidence.
- 40:33Yeah. Because the conversation
- 40:34between the Texas and Mexico
- 40:36side of that border has been like
- 40:38exchanging cultural ideas, music
- 40:41ideas longer than
- 40:42that border has really been there,
- 40:43you know.
- 40:44And it would it would be interesting
- 40:45to get those two in a room.
- 40:47I would love nothing more.
- 40:49And sit and talk about
- 40:51that, how it came about.
- 40:53Screw hands him a cassette.
- 40:55Have you heard this?
- 41:00[crosstalk], like hip hop artists
- 41:02that like attribute to Mexicanos.
- 41:04Like.
- 41:06Being the bulk of
- 41:08their fan base and the fan base
- 41:10that actually, like, keeps them
- 41:11employed.
- 41:12They were like, they were like,
- 41:14yeah, Black people were at our
- 41:15shows. But for the most part, it's
- 41:17Latinos where a lot of them
- 41:19were like Mexicans, but they were
- 41:21like, Latinos are the ones that are
- 41:23at shows that are like buying the
- 41:24merch, buying the records, like
- 41:26being coming to shows, paying the
- 41:28fares like they were like in hip
- 41:30hop.
- 41:31It was like Bun B said that. Bun B
- 41:33and I can't remember.
- 41:34I think it was not Scarface, but it
- 41:36was like other cats that were just
- 41:37saying like, no, I stayed
- 41:39alive and relevant because
- 41:41of Latinos in America.
- 41:43Which we play with Bun B not
- 41:45too long ago. Yeah.
- 41:47This is Manny.
- 41:48We did a backyard barbecue.
- 41:50Like six years ago.
- 41:52No, we did it twice at
- 41:54little darlings and.
- 41:56Yeah, music in them.
- 41:57And you put this together
- 41:59and, you know, it was like, you
- 42:00know, he came out with his burger.
- 42:02So it was like the year before, and,
- 42:04I mean, we were like, oh my God,
- 42:05we're going to be like on stage,
- 42:07you know, before Bun B.
- 42:10I was more excited for Paul Wall.
- 42:11There was like a moment. They were
- 42:12like, oh, he might need a DJ.
- 42:14You want a DJ from like, oh [bleep]
- 42:16yeah. It's going to be incredible.
- 42:17So,
- 42:19I didn't mean to cut you off.
- 42:21No, no, no.
- 42:22I love that Paul was just rocking
- 42:23the gray right now.
- 42:25Hell, yeah. I love it to death.
- 42:26I'll be there shortly.
- 42:28You know.
- 42:29We're there right now.
- 42:29Yeah. Shut up.
- 42:31Aging is tough.
- 42:34Yeah, man, none of you live that.
- 42:35No, no, no, just put that aside.
- 42:37Just looks like you look wonderful.
- 42:39Yeah. Did I say that?
- 42:40Just let me paint you guys a
- 42:42picture. Yeah, I see an Adonis
- 42:44in front of me.
- 42:45I know you are, Cat.
- 42:47That is just a golden god.
- 42:49Yeah, yeah, that is exactly
- 42:51what it.
- 42:51It's no lies.
- 42:53No lies told.
- 42:55See? Everyone in the room agrees.
- 42:55Accurate facts.
- 42:56If you lie, I'm hurting.
- 43:00I look great on the radio.
- 43:04We. I was gonna ask a question,
- 43:06man. Now that you
- 43:08threw me off at that.
- 43:08Now I'm thinking I'm bad because
- 43:10he's good.
- 43:11That's my. That's my move.
- 43:12That's. You totally killed the
- 43:14party.
- 43:14Nice crunching
- 43:16numbers. That guy.
- 43:17God, yeah.
- 43:18Batting a thousand over here.
- 43:22More from Peligrosa after this.
- 43:23[music]
- 43:27You're listening to ¡Vamos Verde!.
- 43:29And we're talking to Austin FC's
- 43:30official game day DJs, the
- 43:32collective Peligrosa.
- 43:35Your involvement with the team,
- 43:36has it open doors that you wouldn't
- 43:38have normally have had open to you
- 43:40before?
- 43:41I think every time you're
- 43:43in the public eye, there's
- 43:46opportunity for that.
- 43:48So. Absolutely, I mean, it.
- 43:50Stadiums sold out 21,000
- 43:53seats up for
- 43:55last, you know, a couple of years.
- 43:56No doubt.
- 43:58You're pretty visible to
- 44:00so many people.
- 44:01So. And I remember, I've
- 44:03talked to, you know, coworkers,
- 44:06about that gig because there are
- 44:07there's a lot of fans there.
- 44:09And, you know, just
- 44:11kind of their faces light up to,
- 44:13you know, just because, like, wow,
- 44:15that must be an amazing feeling.
- 44:16And it is like playing to that
- 44:18many people.
- 44:19And then just, the
- 44:21vibe there is so
- 44:23amazing as it is.
- 44:25You know, I'm I feel like.
- 44:27I'm, I feel just really fortunate to
- 44:29be a part of it and grateful
- 44:31and blessed.
- 44:33Now you say coworkers, you don't
- 44:35mean he's fine gentlemen.
- 44:36No, my day gig, day gig.
- 44:38So.
- 44:39So you go from
- 44:41deejaying effectively,
- 44:44a 2.5 hour long party
- 44:46for 20,000 people,
- 44:48and then you do what?
- 44:49I substitute teach.
- 44:51For what level of.
- 44:53School? Elementary at Zavala.
- 44:55Shout out to Zavala Elementary.
- 44:56That is.
- 44:57Yeah.
- 44:58Intense.
- 44:59That's that's fun.
- 45:00First time hearing about it. By the
- 45:01way, you are amazing.
- 45:03It's amazing.
- 45:03I mean, actually, this this is a
- 45:05pretty this.
- 45:06There are parallels you can draw.
- 45:07You have a...
- 45:09Absolutely, we're his children.
- 45:09You've got a crew
- 45:12that kind of back you up.
- 45:13But for the most part, you're out
- 45:15there alone. Yeah.
- 45:16You've got an audience that is
- 45:18a little on the fence about you to
- 45:20begin with, right?
- 45:21And you have to win them over.
- 45:23Yeah. It's true.
- 45:24And,
- 45:26and, you know, they may have seen
- 45:28you before at another show,
- 45:30when you were substituting.
- 45:33You were Mrs. Brown's class.
- 45:34Yeah. But but,
- 45:36you know, they're still like.
- 45:37Well, I don't know, what are you
- 45:38going to do today? You know what?
- 45:40You're only as good as your last
- 45:41set.
- 45:42At Zavala. I've been there
- 45:44for almost two months now, so
- 45:46I've gotten to know the students.
- 45:47So you got a residency gig?
- 45:48[crosstalk]
- 45:53Before I did that.
- 45:54Going to a new school every day.
- 45:55That was it. That was a trip.
- 45:56Yeah. And, like, I'm sure explaining
- 45:59to them. Yep.
- 46:00I just deejay Q2.
- 46:01Yeah, I told them they're like, no
- 46:03way, Mr. Lopez, you?
- 46:05I'm like, what do I not look like I
- 46:06do?
- 46:06No, you look like a nerd.
- 46:09Well, I mean, so I had to bust out
- 46:10of my pictures, and I'm like, wow.
- 46:13Can I go? Can you take me?
- 46:15Immediately,
- 46:19if you're good.
- 46:21Immediately, they're like, where can
- 46:22I get free tickets?
- 46:23Yeah.
- 46:24That happens with adult humans as
- 46:26well. Oh, yeah.
- 46:27The minute that they find out like
- 46:28you do what now?
- 46:30What's your takeaway when you do
- 46:31shows there? What?
- 46:32When you walk away, when you're hit
- 46:34the bus or whatever you're doing on
- 46:35the way home.
- 46:36What's the feeling you guys get?
- 46:38This is Trey.
- 46:39It's kind of a rush, almost.
- 46:41Or this, like, elevated
- 46:44experience, you know, just.
- 46:46I mean, like I said earlier,
- 46:48sports was a huge part of my life.
- 46:50So being in that
- 46:52atmosphere and,
- 46:55I've mainly gone to baseball games
- 46:56and basketball games, I've never
- 46:58really been to a soccer stadium
- 47:00that is
- 47:02bumpin like that.
- 47:03You know what I mean?
- 47:04So and then being a part of
- 47:06it and just thinking, wow, I just
- 47:08we just got to play for the home
- 47:10team.
- 47:11So like 20,000.
- 47:12And if we win it's feels even
- 47:14better. You know.
- 47:16And so this year
- 47:18like last year, what I really like
- 47:20about Austin FC is they
- 47:22have incorporated so much of the
- 47:23Austin artist bands.
- 47:26So the idea
- 47:28to like
- 47:30have someone in our crew
- 47:32create the theme song
- 47:34or the song that's played right
- 47:36before kick off, that
- 47:38was something that was, you know, I
- 47:39thought about that, during the
- 47:41off season, and I mentioned it to,
- 47:44someone in the production team,
- 47:46Alfredo, one
- 47:48night at the Peligrosa and I'm like,
- 47:50hey, you know how we use those
- 47:51songs? We've been playing other
- 47:52people's songs the last couple of
- 47:54years before, right before a
- 47:55whistle, like, oh, what if?
- 47:56What if like, we do our own and
- 47:58produce it, you know?
- 48:00So Orion went to town and created
- 48:02this crazy beat.
- 48:03[music]
- 48:21Like you say. We we brought on board
- 48:23Z and,
- 48:25so yeah.
- 48:26So now it's just another level.
- 48:28Every year I think we've been able
- 48:30to just kind of elevate
- 48:32it a little bit.
- 48:33But yeah, just, you know,
- 48:35and it also walking out with
- 48:37the crowd together, it's
- 48:39pretty dope for sure.
- 48:41I always like that. Like whenever
- 48:42they do halftime.
- 48:43And you'll see people just kind of
- 48:44like, you know, strutting
- 48:46on their way to go grab some that
- 48:48has a very like serious gait.
- 48:50You know, the way that they're
- 48:51moving, it's like, oh, that dude's
- 48:53on a mission. And then you'll just
- 48:54see him kind of like break a little
- 48:56bit like, oh [bleep], that's
- 48:57my jam.
- 48:58Or just like, oh, cool.
- 49:00And then you'll just see him stop
- 49:01and then either go do what they're
- 49:02doing or circle back, you know,
- 49:04later, and then they're just like,
- 49:06oh, hey. Yeah.
- 49:07And it's just it's really funny to
- 49:09see someone's entire mood melt
- 49:11in front of you of just like,
- 49:13I got to go do something and I'm
- 49:15going to be there, get, you know,
- 49:16get back to my seat.
- 49:17And then they're just like, oh,
- 49:18[bleep], let's have a little party,
- 49:19like let's dance a little bit.
- 49:20And then they and then be on their
- 49:22way. You know, it's funny,
- 49:25I think that's my favorite part.
- 49:25I would I would add something
- 49:28to Trey. Everything that Trey said,
- 49:29I definitely feel super
- 49:31high when I get out of out of the
- 49:33shows because of the energy
- 49:35that I've never experienced before.
- 49:36But I started seeing kids
- 49:39show up right on our stage,
- 49:42right? As soon as we're playing,
- 49:43they're there, they're just waiting
- 49:45and it's almost like, we're,
- 49:47we're dancing, you know?
- 49:48They're just like they're expressing
- 49:50themselves. There's almost like
- 49:52future breakdancers, you
- 49:54know? And they're doing like, a
- 49:55weird way.
- 49:57Wait, let me describe what I'm
- 49:58seeing. Oh, yeah.
- 49:59Here we go.
- 50:01Yeah. Speaking in tongues.
- 50:02Oh my gosh.
- 50:03Beautiful.
- 50:04It was so, so, so beautiful.
- 50:08Yeah I'm there for the team.
- 50:09So if they need me to play,
- 50:12you know, two hours of the sound
- 50:14of duck quacking, I'm there.
- 50:16Doesn't matter what it is. Just get
- 50:18it in.
- 50:19That album's pretty good.
- 50:21Two hours of the sounds of ducks
- 50:22quacking. [crosstalk].
- 50:23There's a mallard in there.
- 50:26That's the way I make bread.
- 50:27Yeah.
- 50:28I've never heard a mallard quite
- 50:29like I've heard a mallard on that
- 50:30record.
- 50:32And, we'll come by Saturday.
- 50:34Please come say hi to whoever's
- 50:36either outside.
- 50:37I'll dig through your crates.
- 50:38Yeah, I'll pick, like, Eartha Kitt
- 50:40and.
- 50:41Oh, yeah.
- 50:42Let's go.
- 50:43So. And also third Friday of the
- 50:45month, you know, if you're looking
- 50:46for a party third Friday of the
- 50:48month, that's when Peligrosa is up.
- 50:50It's always on the third Friday of
- 50:51the month.

- 51:01equipment, Juan and I are doing a
- 51:02set.
- 51:03Yeah. [crosstalk]
- 51:09I assume you're just going to deejay
- 51:10your podcast.
- 51:11Yeah, we're just gonna get, you
- 51:12know, it's gonna be a remix that.
- 51:14Like live cutting.
- 51:15[crosstalk] You'll have to take that duck quack out.
- 51:20We had to whittle down an hour
- 51:23and a half of that conversation,
- 51:25so.
- 51:25It was a good chat.
- 51:26It was a really I mean, I had no
- 51:28expectation for, what,
- 51:30what they would bring in, man, they
- 51:31were all very interesting and very
- 51:33cool. And we only met a percentage
- 51:35of them. There's still more
- 51:36Peligrosa and lots of danger.
- 51:38So lots of danger out there.
