- 1:51nineteen fifty seven and the title is The Heatherstone Players Matter from Hollywood It's
- 1:59fine now? Or Johnny doll Ah, how weary is Dale? Flat and
- 2:06unprofitable? Seemed to me all the uses of this world? Who is that?
- 2:09Garrett Reynolds, Johnny Reynolds and Trenton Right, New Jersey State Mutual Life.
- 2:15Well, what was the quote from Shakespeare about it? Hamma? Wasn't
- 2:19the last I would have tail unfold? Whose lightest word would harrow? Off
- 2:22ice? Freeze thy young blood? Make thy two eyes like stars down from
- 2:27their spears. Hey, hey, now, wait a minute. My hair
- 2:31to stand on end like quills upon the fretful porpentine. Garrett, have you
- 2:36gone off your rocker? Why don't you come on down here? See?
- 2:38Yeah, I think i'd better Mark Bailey in the Exciting Adventures of the Man
- 2:52with the Action Back to expense the Cow America's Fabulous Free Lance Insurance Investigator Turly
- 2:58Johnny Dallon expense account submitted by a special investigator, Johnny Dollar the New Jersey
- 3:16State Neutral Life Insurance Company, Trent New Jersey office. Following is an account
- 3:21of expenses encourage during my investigation of the Heatherstone Players matter expense account out of
- 3:31one nine dollars eighty cents trained fair lunch and incidentals. On the trip from
- 3:35Hartford to Trenton, New Jersey, I had him to seventy cents taxi to
- 3:38Garrett Reynold's office. Oh glad you wasted no time, Johnny fidd On.
- 3:43I'll get right to the point, rush if I read the signs right?
- 3:46Yes, okay? What are you expecting to get bumped off? The other
- 3:51hear of the Heatherstone Players sounds like a summer theater or a traveling stock company.
- 3:55It's Cyril Peter Saint George Heatherstone's and he's just as bad as he sounds,
- 4:01an old Shakespearean actor, a real ham Ah Friends Roman, No,
- 4:05don't, don't, don't do that. He'll be bad enough when he gets
- 4:09here any minutes now, what do you mean every other sentence a quote from
- 4:13the Immortal bar time he's listened to him for five minutes. You never want
- 4:16to hear of Shakespeare again. It sounds like he might be fun fun.
- 4:21He's poisoned, and if he gets knocked off it'll cost the company ten thousand
- 4:27dollars. Come on, tell me off. He keeps traveling around, conducting
- 4:31classes in Shakespeare and putting on occasional performances with the local talent. After he
- 4:36gets all there, does some of them. That is, whenever he pulls
- 4:40out of a town, he leaves behind a lot of untaped bill No wonder
- 4:44he keeps traveling around. It's no joke. He also leaves behind a lot
- 4:47of enemies and a lot of broken high If he's Romeo himself or Casanova,
- 4:53anyhow, he's back. You're intresting. He's putting on a Shakespearean festival over
- 4:59radio station w VGR. Oh well, hey, now maybe I could join
- 5:02the cast. What's hot? What life? F leonda? Window breaks?
- 5:06It is the East ten? Will you've cut it out? It's a serious
- 5:12it's a am I, but go on. There is not one if his
- 5:15cast or crew there at the radio station doesn't hate every bone in his body
- 5:19except maybe young Johnny Carter. And who she Oh, she's a girl he
- 5:24picked to play Juliet. I don't know if he is promised to a shining
- 5:27career on the stage and start him in pictures and that sort of thing.
- 5:30Well maybe she's good thought all kid herself. It's part of his act.
- 5:33The charmer away from Charlie Cubberly and who is he? He's also in the
- 5:38cast and getting nothing but bit far well. I still see no cause for
- 5:43a long Oh you will, Johnny, if you ever attend one of those
- 5:46rehearsal. Look if they all hate him, so why don't they just walk
- 5:48on? The old shift has got him, tie down the contract, but
- 5:51to sign him with their eyes closed. They're stuck with him, Johnny,
- 5:55until the festival is over or until somebody kills him. Do you think it's
- 6:00not serious, Johnny? One way or another. He has taken everybody he's
- 6:05ever come into contact with, even you, even me. Number of times
- 6:11I've had to go through the operation of changing the beneficiary, and his power
- 6:14is the beneficiary. As at the moment Johan Carter, the actress you mentioned,
- 6:18a girl I mentioned, he uses the policy is a come on to
- 6:24charm the poor unsuspecting Yo? What has what has he done? That?
- 6:29It in golden letters should be set among the high tighes of the calendar,
- 6:34Johnny Boy, Act three, Scene one, Mayor for your plebian here,
- 6:39I should have asked this church feller next to you, why boy? He
- 6:43said, for me? This is our Pedstone. This is Johnny Dollar.
- 6:46Oh and here's my hand and mine, sir, with my heart in Gordon
- 6:53man, that's from the temples back to castone. I've asked Dollars to act
- 6:59as your body god until this play of yours is over right, you can
- 7:01get out of town. Why festival in which the immortal Shakespeare is what beneath
- 7:08my practice hands? So seven d a stone Jarrett, I'm on her,
- 7:13I said, bodyguard. I've received pree anonymous notes telling me, you know,
- 7:15on certain terms, that his life isn't worth a plug nickel around that
- 7:18studio threats warning, what matter to quote about I bear a charmed life?
- 7:26Have you given those notes to the police. Yeah, but I haven't heard
- 7:29back from him. That's why I sent for you in such a hurt.
- 7:30How fitting that my ends should come there on stage, so to speak?
- 7:34What blow come rack? At least tire die with Harvest on my back.
- 7:42It is the same a friend that I'll die with my boot. Yeah,
- 7:46I got that. Has anybody threatened you and person had a stone? Yeah?
- 7:49And what about that girl Joan? And the way Charlie comes you?
- 7:53He makes the vault a feasting present full of Oh listen, will you.
- 7:57I'm talking about Charlie the boy she's thrown off, But for you and your
- 8:00fall, they promises that boy is crazy enough for jealousy to try almost anything.
- 8:03I you is mad, right, that he is mad. He's true,
- 8:07He's true, he's pity and it's true, Headstone, he's mad enough
- 8:13to kill you, and so are some of the others. You're pretty rough
- 8:16on your chance of actors on your crew. But I must be cruell early
- 8:20to be kind. Now, so ambitious, all of them, but so
- 8:24inadequate. So tutally do they attempt to gain the highest talent to be had,
- 8:30with which I am so rich. And all right, all right,
- 8:33look please, Apparently Garrett feels that your life isn't danger. I'm sure of
- 8:37it, And as long as I've come all the way down here, I'll
- 8:39take his word for it that every one of your assoaches there's a serious personal
- 8:43reason for wanting to see you out of the way. Well, private griefs
- 8:46they have allowed. I know. Now, listen, will you. It's
- 8:48like us. Don't you care that somebody is out to get you? My
- 8:54cough my crew said, yes, ah me stands not within the prospect of
- 9:01believable love the factory man. Yes, I swear true that I was better
- 9:05couplance, more in follow than an anger in gratitude towards me who've given man
- 9:11the much. Believe me, it is true. That's why I insist you
- 9:18have somebody to look out for you until you can get out of town.
- 9:20These worlds are raised us to me. While that's why I sent for Dollar.
- 9:26This man. Yes, let me have men about me who are headed
- 9:31man and such a sleep and night. Yon Dollars has a leaven hungry look.
- 9:35He thinks too much. Such men are dangerous? Will you shut up?
- 9:39And because I am, believe me, if it weren't for the ten
- 9:43thousand it costs the company. I sometimes think I'd like to take care of
- 9:45that little matter myself, and you would be found out, that's what you
- 9:48think than dollar? Look upon his face I quote so full of us was
- 9:52Jealousy is guilt? It spills itself in peering into all right. The fact
- 10:00remains. And in spite of what Garrett says, you're determined to go ahead
- 10:01with his play, this festival of you, in spite of the frets on
- 10:05your life, Why not all good die possy through nature to each other.
- 10:11Okay, okay, when's your next rehearsal this afternoon? But stay w b
- 10:15gr right correct. But I'm going to be there to interfere with me at
- 10:20work on, to hide in the corner and see if all this fuss over.
- 10:24You are justified to see if the atmosphere down there is as stick as
- 10:26Garrett says it is. To either take on this case or not, depending
- 10:31on whether I think your life is really in danger. Oh, Johnny,
- 10:33his life has been in danger for years, you admitted by that. I
- 10:39do so there for Hob Hobb they could have done, would long ago have
- 10:45cust me in its grass? Yeah, well, maybe you've just been lucky
- 10:48in the past. I quote Trees has done his work, no steal,
- 10:52no part not domestic, nothing, nothing can touch me, Laurien with that
- 11:01thought, I'm busy now, Yeah, well go get perhaps well that before
- 11:07I quote to fear the world off all the why Jacob, Yeah, you
- 11:20want to drink Garrett. That is the craziest man I've ever met. But
- 11:26I still don't really see what you're worried about. That's because all you've seen
- 11:30is is the amusing side of them. But I tell you, Johnny,
- 11:37Look, did you mean that about going over to the studio. Yeah,
- 11:39sure, and frankly, more to see how our radio show is put together
- 11:41than anything else. And I'll arrange you to sit in the control room with
- 11:45the engineer, the fellow who keeps the voices and sound effects and music and
- 11:48things in that great I'll have a ball. Yeah, but you'll see why
- 11:52I sent for you. Why I'm so sure somebody's gonna murder ahead this tone.
- 11:56If I didn't know you so well, Garrett, I think you were
- 12:00planning to do it yourself and call me in as a cover up. You
- 12:03know something, Johnny, Wow, I'll call the studio make arrangements for you.
- 12:16I couldn't help feeling that Garrett's own resentment of Cyril Heatherstone was for a
- 12:20lot more than the mere fact he'd have to revise his policy a few more
- 12:22times. But if so, he wouldn't admit it to me. I had
- 12:28him three dollar twenty five taxiser the studios at WVGR. There I was escorted
- 12:33backstage so to speak to the control room. It was a small room facing
- 12:37into the main studio to a large sound proof plate glass window, and it
- 12:41was loaded with complicated equipment before the control panel with its knobs and keys and
- 12:46dials set Gordon Mitchell, the engineer, nice looking chapp in his thirties.
- 12:50Through the window, we could see Heatherstone and the cats gathered around the table
- 12:56working on the script. Sit here right beside me, Dollar and you can
- 13:00see and hear everything that goes on in there. Oh wow, sure an
- 13:03ice guard is Is that microphone sitting in the middle of the studio there,
- 13:07the one they use when they're on the air, You know, that's one
- 13:09of them. There's one over there beside all that equipment for the sound effects
- 13:13men. Oh yes, I see. And then there's another one in that
- 13:16booth over against the wall. And what's that far two isolated for special voice
- 13:22effects like a voice coming over telephone, things like that. That filled her
- 13:26mic, Oh I see. And then the one hanging over the table where
- 13:30they're reading will be for the orchestra when it comes in later. Say,
- 13:33you have a lot of stuff to balance when you're doing a show, haven't
- 13:37you? More knobs and dials and stuff? You see here? This knob
- 13:41controls the mic over their table out there. Listen fait a minute. The
- 13:46lion s fresh out for the crack well. I well, Charlie Coverley plays
- 13:52one of the small well. You said to get everything we could out of
- 13:58the line. I did so. I added a couple of works. They
- 14:01see, Yeah, well, I thought, there we go. Dog.
- 14:07Listen, we don't gi find a goal A painful lily to throw a pup
- 14:13lama. He's waiting. Ridiculous, they say, remember that ridiculous You were
- 14:20enough cut it off all he really tears into them. Nothing, Believe me,
- 14:26there was nothing. Don He's a most hated man in this town,
- 14:31so I've heard so. I heard pretty fast dealer too. If you're not
- 14:35kidding, he should nicked me. How do you mean all my savings,
- 14:41you know, invest in this Shakespearean festival. He'll get a sponsor. We'll
- 14:45all make a million. If it wasn't for the Beneficial Finance Company, I'd
- 14:50be on my ufforts, bad way and poort. Charlie out there not only
- 14:54lost his shirt to Cyril, but his girl too, have a little blonde
- 14:58designed him. Wh who's talking now? Yeah, listen to open the mic
- 15:03again. There's Rosemary. That's for remembering. Praise is all remember what,
- 15:11and there is parenting. That's the thought there's that for you, and here's
- 15:16something for me when they call it her brace? So Sunday, what makes
- 15:22the role of a few live? If you don't point I'm child? You
- 15:33don't commented the child before me. I'm out remember his common pool and learned
- 15:39us in young Anders. Sorry, I can't take it, Jordan. That
- 15:46guy is the most egotistical character I've ever seen. He isn't going to live
- 15:50along. Who are you thinking of any of that group out there and the
- 15:54sound crew and the musicians. There isn't one of them hasn't got murder in
- 15:58his eye. I totally ensured all are you going to say? I?
- 16:07I sent a couple of notes to Cereals Insurance Manny is an old friend of
- 16:11mine. I didn't sign him because I didn't want to get involved, but
- 16:15I told him what I'm telling you. Somebody's gonna kill that guy out there
- 16:18unless you were Wait a second and go through me there when that's oh sorry,
- 16:26Cyril, mister Headstone responsible, Wow, this a rehustle that top backs
- 16:32so loud Ersu's too, that's too you're shouting at me. Not I were
- 16:37not hacked. Okay, sorry, believe me, you'll wear me out this
- 16:41top. Believe me, I am sorry, I forgot I rehearsed my life
- 16:45and the pole ghost. I love how shape they're ready the fils an ultimately
- 16:52yes, sir, right in the isolation booth. Well that happened, all
- 16:56of you. There's a great line from the list and ah, I'm a
- 17:00great ass doll. No get the hair. Same braby likes himself, doesn't
- 17:07it. What are those kids lit in their eyes? Sad? A minute
- 17:11minute ago there's murdering? Who's that team in the door at the back door
- 17:15of the isolation booth. All that's one of those sound effects. Man.
- 17:18He takes care of Hi, boys and girls. How's the old woo?
- 17:25Now? Is this microphone on and walking properly? Yeah, it's on,
- 17:29but work a little closer to it, will Yeah, with a bit less
- 17:32voice, you tell me I'm using microphone. I'm quiet, all of you?
- 17:41Wow? What's you waiting for? The move? Dollar? The move?
- 17:48Come on? Come on? Ah m my bobbles spinning doom, pull
- 17:56the fucking plumb to walk a night. I was good, he could buy
- 18:03your pasty files. Killed the foul crime done? Oh, why don't tell
- 18:12me he's forgotten this? Why he's high, mo Shanda, that's not the
- 18:17script. I drunk, drunk quick? What is this my dismal scene?
- 18:22I needs must act alone? Past hope cost kill me? Wait a minute,
- 18:33the fun what's happened? I don't know? Doll right back too,
- 19:02of yours, truly Johnny Dollar in Almond, Who among us has not hoped
- 19:07for a better life, Who has not had a desire to help stamp out
- 19:12disease and suffering among more unfortunate people throughout the world. Many have wanted to
- 19:19help, and many have done so. That sort of work is going on
- 19:23everywhere. Everywhere there is hope for freedom and a better life. Outstanding in
- 19:30this field of activity is Project Hope, which operates from a converted US Navy
- 19:36hospital ship called, appropriately enough, the Hope. The good Ship Hope carries
- 19:41out its mission of mercy in far eastern waters wherever doctors, nurses, dentists,
- 19:49sanitation and public health experts are needed. The Hope seems full speed ahead
- 19:56and gives what help it can. In addition to give medical aid, the
- 20:00staff of the Hope works with local doctors to acquaint them with the newest of
- 20:06medicines and medical procedures. At the same time, the staff of the Hope
- 20:11learns a great deal about the symptoms the cures of diseases with which they have
- 20:15had no previous contact. When the Hope was in the United States Navy,
- 20:22it was called the Consolation, and it is certain that the people who now
- 20:26operator will give both consolation and hope to those who are suffering. Consolation,
- 20:34hope, and a new life for wherever the hospital ship Hope is anchored,
- 20:41its staff is to make emergency trips to scenes of disasters and epidemics. Their
- 20:47services include a wide variety of skills, from removing a tumor from a child's
- 20:52neck to putting a bandage on an old woman's cut finger. But most important
- 21:00late with the Hope comes friendship and understanding, good medicine for healthy freedom,
- 21:08which is the right of all men everywhere, And no act too, of
- 21:14your truly. Donny Dollar and the Heatherstone players matter. Cyril Peter, Saint
- 21:22George Heatherstone was dead, there was no doubt about it, and the old
- 21:26Shakespearean actor had died muttering the words of the immortal bar They're at radio station
- 21:30WVGR and Trent, New Jersey. When he fell on the isolation book at
- 21:33one side. I immediately rushed into the main studio checked the dead man's body
- 21:37is closed. I started eppy nook and cranny of the isolation booth and came
- 21:41up with nothing. Cyril is dead, dear, dear, is it?
- 21:49Well? I'm glad he's dead. He said it coming for a long long
- 21:52time. Don't stop it, don't stop it. He was going to make
- 21:56me an actress, a great actress. Start did that stuff? Jonnie was
- 22:00taking you like? He took the rest of it, and me, I'm
- 22:03glad to see him lying there. Oh are you? Huh? Don ringo?
- 22:07Sound effects man. I just came in and time it. Hey,
- 22:10wait a minute, who were you? Dollar Insurance investigator investigated, that's right,
- 22:15Gordon. Yet that phone in the control room. Can you call outside
- 22:18on a sure and call headquarters. Get somebody from homicide over here right here?
- 22:22Don Hey, yes, sir, I want you to stay right here
- 22:25by this isolation boots. Make sure that nobody say who, by the way,
- 22:29opened the door of this boot? What I did to God? Did
- 22:32you touch his body? No? Oh? No, I hope not,
- 22:34because what's the matter? Miss the Dollar is well? At least I know
- 22:47what killed him. Yeah, what don you stay here? Okay, the
- 22:51rest of your bank to the rehearsal table. I want to talk to you.
- 22:56It was so faint, I wasn't quite sure for a second, but
- 23:00there was no doubt about that order that came from the isolation booth. Like
- 23:03peach blossom, it's only more delicate and more deadly. It was the order
- 23:07of potassium Payson. And I'm glad the trace of it was strength, because
- 23:11one good whip that full strength would kill almost instantly, had killed me.
- 23:15I'd left Don Ringle there is a booth to watch him and see if he
- 23:18made any move toward heatherstone body. But Don had been the last one near
- 23:22him before he died. All right, now, officially, there's nothing I
- 23:26can do until the police get here. You you said you know what killed
- 23:30him, mister Dollar, Potassium Payson, Charlie ever hear of him? But
- 23:36well no, of course, not one tiny crystalis followed kills instantly, or
- 23:40a single flip of it one it's heated, vaporized. Same thing. You
- 23:44think maybe he committed suicide, mister Dollar? What do you think, Don?
- 23:48Or what are your mean? Doesn't sound like Heatherstone to meat Dollar kill
- 23:52himself, all right, So he needed help from someone in this room.
- 23:56And don you were the last one near him. Oh wait a mess?
- 23:57Okay, okay, Arlie, yes, sir. And you think of anybody
- 24:02here who might have had a better motive for killing Heatherstone than you? No,
- 24:07No, I can't. I wanted to see that tony, egotistical shiker
- 24:11get more than anything else in the world. But I wouldn't have killed him.
- 24:14Well, I would, Charlie gladly, and I make no bones about
- 24:15it. Police will be here anymount dollar good. How about your feelings of
- 24:21the matter. Don sure, I'm glad he's been knocked off, but don't
- 24:25accuse me of having I'm not accusing anybody yet, but this is kind of
- 24:29funny. The only one who admits he would have killed Heatherstone is Gordon the
- 24:32here. But he was in the control room with me, not only when
- 24:34it happened, but long before it happened. And potassium pith and doesn't wait
- 24:40the rest of you, though we're right here next to Heatherstone. Any one
- 24:42of you could have flipped the stuff to him before he walked into that isolation
- 24:45booth. Yeah, but how would we have made him take it? Uh,
- 24:52that's a good question. Did you find any of that potassium whatever it
- 24:55is in the booth? Now? But I got a good whipp of it.
- 24:57You said it had to be vaporized the path and asked to do its
- 25:00work. Yes, dollar could have capsule of it have been tossed into the
- 25:03booths, or maybe less than the fore than step on and where's the capsule?
- 25:07Gordon? I went over that booth was a fine tooth comb, Joan,
- 25:11Yes, are you the only one who touched him before I came in
- 25:15from the control room. I didn't touch my coach, but you were the
- 25:18only one who went into the booth. Weren't you the only one who could
- 25:22have removed any evidence of the means used to get that vaporized path? And
- 25:26if you're saying that Joney had anything to do with what's the matter with you?
- 25:30Didn't you know that she was? She was in love with a All
- 25:33right? Take it. I thought I loved him her, honey. I
- 25:38guess it took to bring me to my senses, John, Oh, Joe,
- 25:45all right, Look, we've got a murder on our hands. And
- 25:48unless the police are able to come up with more than I have, well,
- 25:55nothing weren't the doctor who came along with Lieutenant Harper agreed with Mike and
- 26:00pollution that had a stone of diet from a healthy whift to pay it in
- 26:02gas. But neither of them could find any possible source of the gas,
- 26:07even have to throw inspection of the isolation booth, a studio and every one
- 26:10of us dinners. Nothing did it. Finally, after some four hours of
- 26:15feudal questioning, there was murder, all right, Dollar, no question about
- 26:19it. Any suspects, any suspects, all of them, every one of
- 26:23them. That maybe the guy who was in the control room with you,
- 26:26lieutenant, that should make him number one in the lists. You've been reading
- 26:30too many mysteries to it. Oh look, lieutenant, how much longer are
- 26:33we going to have to stay around here? You anxious to get away?
- 26:37What's your name? Ringo? Well? I mean it? After all?

- 26:49No? Thanks? A little tired of just standing around? What about us
- 26:53with tennis? It's doing really good to keep us here. Look, somebody
- 26:57in this place killed Heatherstone. Yeah, but you're not getting anywhere finding out
- 27:02who it was. Are we all under suspicion? Excuse me, Dolly,
- 27:06you're standing on this mike cable? Oh sorry, I asked you a question,
- 27:10Lieutenant. Answer is yes, yes, you're all under suspicion. But
- 27:14what good is keeping us here rather be locked up? The Excuse me again,
- 27:18dogar Now this cable? Oh sure you know? Wait a minute,
- 27:23that's the cable for the mic in that booth. Yes, that's right.
- 27:26Excuse me, Yeah, you go ahead and take it away, Gordon,
- 27:30those mike. I'll stay in the studio, yes, sir. Oh if
- 27:33you ever want to inspect him, inspect him? Went for Oh I didn't

- 27:44It's thicker than the other? Oh yeah, probably an old one,
- 27:48or maybe it's bigger because it has a couple of extra leads in it,
- 27:52extra wires. Yeah, the old ones did. That's why you two,
- 27:59Gordon got sure in my pocket there you are fliers too, if you want
- 28:03them. If I don't understand, why now this mic in the boot cheerful?
- 28:11That's pretty don't then you do it? Take the faceplate off this mic?
- 28:15Sure? Why? Yeah, doll potassium paton a crystal, a potassium
- 28:22patan vaporized in this boot, for sure. But you're gonna tell me how.
- 28:27Maybe I'm just kissing, but I think so. Go ahead, God,
- 28:32yes, sir, Well, I still don't. Yeah you are.
- 28:37There's the inside of it. Yeah, And there's a block, this tiny
- 28:45ball of fuse metal all that's left of a heating element that was melted away
- 28:48inside this mic thanks to the extra wires and that table. Well, it's
- 28:53probably just a little piece of stuff. And look at the color, a
- 28:56livid red typical of the action of the pay it an on fuse metal on
- 29:02the heating element that was placed in the mic and destroyed by a surge of
- 29:04current. Hey, that color, that's right, you're right. Well.
- 29:11And the one man who didn't hesitate to say how he felt about Heavystone,
- 29:18who said he would kill him, who warned us, and the one man
- 29:22with an alibi because I was there in the control room with him. I
- 29:26suppose you just connected the power leads to that table when you went into the
- 29:30control room to call the police. Didn't regard Yeah, mister do you guessed
- 29:33right again? But it was a good try, it wasn't it. No
- 29:38flight of angels will sing him to his arrest. So that was it and

- 29:52back to High Pride fifty one twenty five Yours to leave, Johnny downs now
- 30:11here is our star to tell you about next week's story. Next week,
- 30:14the yours truly matter, and I give you one gift about the name of
- 30:18the victims. Join us, won't you? Yours truly? Johnny Downer,
- 30:34Yours Truly Johnny Dollars, starring Bob Bailey, originates in Hollywood. It is
- 30:38produced and directed by Jack Johnstone, who also wrote tonight's story. Heard in
- 30:44our cast were Virginia Greg Laurence Hopkins, Nick Crenna, Sam Edwards, Frank
- 30:48Grissell, herb Bigrant and Haunts Conried. He's going to join us next week,
- 30:52same time and station for another exciting story of Yours truly, Johnny Dollars.
- 31:15Welcome back. Well, so much to say on this episode. First
- 31:19of all, it's great to hear Hans Conried in this program. He had
- 31:26been a few other episodes, one from back in nineteen fifty and it also
- 31:32appeared in The Bennett Matter and another program earlier in nineteen fifty seven. But
- 31:38here he plays a character that if you've listened to much earlier old time radio,
- 31:44say from the mid or early forties, I will certainly sound familiar.
- 31:53The top of character he played on programs such as Burns and Allen, so
- 31:59that was a trait to hear. Good performance there and a nice overall mix.
- 32:05I've said before that the Johnstone mysteries or episodes tended to really go more
- 32:12towards the character base, but this one works in a nice mystery to go
- 32:15along with the character. A pretty clever way of committee murderers, with perhaps
- 32:21the only week spot in this episode being the murder calling attention to himself as
- 32:27he was removing these wires and insisting on doing it while everyone was around.
- 32:31If he'd wait till, waited till after the police gone, it might have
- 32:37been the perfect crime, but perhaps was just a little jittery. Virginia greg
- 32:40continues to show she can act, even if her job is to act as
- 32:45if she's someone who can't act. Did a good job, seemed like she
- 32:49couldn't act and with Virginia Greg that takes some acting to do. I also
- 32:54love Johnny wanting to know how a radio program was made. And I thought
- 33:00the reaction of the insurance agent to Heatherstone, and as well as the insurance
- 33:07agent's reaction to Johnny's suggestion that this might be an attempt by the insurance agent
- 33:14to get Johnny here to be the cover up for the actual crime, really
- 33:22did serve to establish this guy as someone who was really hated. And one
- 33:28thing I really loved about Conried's role here I talked about the laughing matter,
- 33:32where John Dayner really played a comedian without any sort of flair that we could
- 33:38really buy him as a comedian. Really, Conried just put everything into this
- 33:46role and created someone who you could really buy into. So this is a
- 33:52great episode, one of the best best ones we've heard, and certainly the
- 33:59best that Jack Johnstone has written from, particularly the mystery standpoint. If I
- 34:05had one slight concern, it's that the episode is part of a larger narrative
- 34:09Waiting portraying Shakespearean actors, and I think it's probably a lot of people to
- 34:15conclude that Shakespeare is just kind of stuffy and snallbash etc. All right,
- 34:22well, now some listener comments and feedback regarding episode thirteen ninety three, The
- 34:32Funny Money Matter. Juliette says this was great. I loved it. The
- 34:38voice is the line, the plot. Bobby Lee says a very lighthearted episode.
- 34:45Loved it, and Laura says, this is my favorite episode. Thanks
- 34:50so much for your feedback. Also received a new review over on Amazon for
- 34:59the app. Mike Randolph says, must have excellent. Thanks so much,
- 35:04Mike. And that is part of a change to Amazon where you don't have
- 35:07to write particularly lengthy reviews. It used to be it had to be twenty
- 35:12words or more. So if you enjoy something, you can just leave a
- 35:15simple two or three word review about what you liked about it, and that
- 35:20gets recorded. So I appreciate that. All right, well, actually that
- 35:25will do it for today. We'll be back tomorrow with Dragnet and join us
- 35:30back here next Friday for another episode of Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. In
