- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn Amharic with Fexingo. Luna: Hey Lucas, happy to be here! Ready for more Amharic. Lucas: Great. So today we are going to learn two super useful verbs: to give and to take. Luna: Oh, I like that. Give and take. Very practical. Lucas: Exactly. So in Amharic, to give is መስጠት. Listen: መስጠት. Luna: መስጠት. Lucas: Good. And to take is መውሰድ. Say it with me: መውሰድ. Luna: መውሰድ. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's put them in sentences. I give: እሰጣለሁ. Luna: እሰጣለሁ. Lucas: I take: እወስዳለሁ. Luna: እወስዳለሁ. That's a mouthful. Lucas: You got it. Now imagine you want someone to give you tea. You say: ሻይ ስጠኝ. Luna: ሻይ ስጠኝ. So that's 'give me tea'. Lucas: Exactly. And if someone is offering you food, they might say: እህል ውሰድ. Luna: እህል ውሰድ. So 'take food'. Lucas: Right. Let's practice a little dialogue. I'll be the waiter, you are the customer. Luna: Okay, go ahead. Lucas: ሻይ ትፈልጋለህ? Luna: አዎ፣ ሻይ እፈልጋለሁ. ሻይ ስጠኝ. Lucas: እሺ፣ ሻይ እሰጣለሁ. እህል ትፈልጋለህ? Luna: አዎ፣ እህል ውሰድ? Wait, I think I said 'take food' but I meant 'give me food'. Lucas: Ooh, almost. To ask for food, you say እህል ስጠኝ. 'Give me food.' ውሰድ means 'take', so if someone tells you እህል ውሰድ, they are telling you to take food. Luna: Ah, right! So እህል ውሰድ is 'take food' as in 'help yourself'. Lucas: Exactly. So if the waiter says እህል ውሰድ, they mean 'take some food'. Luna: Got it. So I should say እህል ስጠኝ when I want them to give it to me. Lucas: Perfect. Let's try again. I'll say: ሻይ ስጠኝ, and you respond. Luna: Okay. ሻይ እሰጣለሁ. Lucas: Excellent. Now you say እህል ስጠኝ to me. Luna: እህል ስጠኝ. Lucas: እህል እሰጣለሁ. Here you go. Luna: Aww, thanks. So I take it: እህል እወስዳለሁ. Lucas: Yes! You just used both verbs. I gave, you took. Luna: That feels good. Let's review the words one more time. Lucas: Sure. To give: መስጠት. Luna: መስጠት. Lucas: To take: መውሰድ. Luna: መውሰድ. Lucas: I give: እሰጣለሁ. Luna: እሰጣለሁ. Lucas: I take: እወስዳለሁ. Luna: እወስዳለሁ. Lucas: And the phrases: give me tea — ሻይ ስጠኝ. Luna: ሻይ ስጠኝ. Lucas: Take food — እህል ውሰድ. Luna: እህል ውሰድ. Lucas: You know, it's amazing how much we can cover in these episodes. And if you're finding this helpful, there's a way to support the show. Luna: Yeah, a few listeners already chip in monthly at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. That literally funds us making these episodes ad-free. Lucas: Exactly. No pressure, but if you enjoy it, that's where you can help. Now, back to practice — let's use these verbs in a real scenario. Luna: Okay! I'm ready to give and take. Lucas: Great. Imagine you are at a friend's house. They offer you coffee. They say: ቡና ትወስዳለህ? Luna: ቡና ትወስዳለህ? That means 'Will you take coffee?' Lucas: Right. How do you answer yes? Luna: አዎ፣ ቡና እወስዳለሁ. Lucas: Perfect. And if you want to give them something? Luna: እህል እሰጣለሁ? Or maybe ሻይ እሰጣለሁ. Lucas: Exactly. You could say: ሻይ እሰጣለሁ. Meaning 'I give tea'. Luna: This is so useful. I can already imagine using this. Lucas: That's the goal. So let's do a quick review. Repeat after me: መስጠት. Luna: መስጠት. Lucas: መውሰድ. Luna: መውሰድ. Lucas: እሰጣለሁ. Luna: እሰጣለሁ. Lucas: እወስዳለሁ. Luna: እወስዳለሁ. Lucas: ሻይ ስጠኝ. Luna: ሻይ ስጠኝ. Lucas: እህል ውሰድ. Luna: እህል ውሰድ. Lucas: Fantastic. You've got it. Keep practicing these, and next time we'll build on them. Luna: Can't wait! Thanks for teaching us, Lucas. Lucas: You're welcome. And thanks to you for listening. Practice these till we chat again.
